Yankalilla Community Library Closure

he Education Department needs to carry out structural repairs to part of the Library ceiling and the Library needs to close for approximately 3 weeks for this to happen. Accordingly, the Library will close on TUESDAY 30TH MARCH and reopen on MONDAY 19TH APRIL. In the week before the closure, Library members are welcome to borrow extra resources. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

March is here and Easter is only just around the corner. Along with the school holidays and the last major influx of visitors to the area before the winter months.

An interesting new management policy appears to have been implemented at the Normanville beach café and it didn’t digest well with one reader. See letters to the editor.

Southern Fleurieu Family Practice has upset members of the community with their new ‘non-attendance’ fee.

What happens if you are scheduled for your appointment in your lunch break and the doctor’s schedule is running late? Will you still be charged the ‘non-attendance fee’ if you have to leave to get back to work before your name is called? One reader has an opinion in the letters section.

Acoustic music nights are on again with the first session scheduled for Saturday 20th March. See page 11 for details.

The Leafy Sea Dragon Festival will hold a public meeting on 14th April at ‘the centre’ (that’s at the skate park, by the way).

We had a number of fires in the district during January and February and a big congratulations to the tireless volunteers from local and neighbouring units who sprang into action to save the day.

For the last few months the Jelfs Group have been planning a renovation and extension of the Normanville Foodland and Normanville Newsagency. Although we are still in the planning stages it is hoped that

we can complete the project by Christmas.

We thought it might be a good idea to get suggestions from those who do the shopping so we can make the end result a much more comfortable and satisfying experience. See the Foodland advert on page 9, fill in the questions and drop them in to the entry boxes in the newsagency or supermarket. There are also some great prizes up for grabs for those who wish to have an input.

Normanville New Years Eve Pageant

T

he Pageant Team wish to advise that the costume shop at Yankalilla Trading Store is no more. (just the costume section of the shop, not the second hand shop!) All of the costumes have gone into storage and of course will be available free of charge for use on New Years Eve. Whilst this is unfortunate, the hiring of the costumes was not viable for the space it took up at the shop or the work involved in running the costume section for the very small amount of money it produced. Of course if there is someone out there who would like to have a go at running a costume shop in the area, give Robyn a ring on 8558 3804 at Yankalilla Trading Store, I’m sure we could work something out!

his year the Lions will once again stage a Monster Auction, again in conjunction with the Victor Harbor High School. The date for this year’s Auction is Saturday 27th March 2010.

The venue is the VICTOR HARBOR RECREATION CENTRE, 5 George Main Road, Victor Harbor. There will be easy parking, a BBQ and refreshments available on the day.

Last year, the first joint Auction with the school raised approx $1,800.00.

Lions would like to see the event become an annual fixture on the Victor Harbor calendar of events. We understand there are people in the area who from time to time are looking for ways to dispose of their surplus goods and items, and we believe we can help.

Once again items for sale will be accepted either, as donated items, or on a commission basis. Only saleable items will be accepted for sale, but we encourage anyone interested in disposing of their unwanted goods or items to contact the club to discuss how we might be able to help.

Goods can be delivered on the Friday before the sale between 3pm and 6.00pm OR on the Saturday morning between 6.00am and 9.00am.

The sale will start at 9.30 am.

On 28th February, the first South Australian Road Runners event for this year was held in the Normanville/Carrickalinga area. We hope all the runners and walkers enjoyed the event. We hope this event will be a regular occurrence in our area.

Cricket sponsors enjoy day out

ankalilla Cricket Club held their first Sponsors Day on Saturday 13th February to acknowledge their generous sponsors for the 2009/10 season. All those who supported the club in purchasing either a Gold, Silver or Bronze Sponsor Package were entertained with food, wine and beer all afternoon while they watched the 2nd eleven play Myponga on the first day of a two day fixture. One sponsor commented “It was a lovely day to watch cricket and we felt welcome and enjoyed the delicious food and wine that was provided.”

The club President, Chris Bartlett, thanked sponsors for their attendance and support, “we were struggling several years ago, but with the efforts of the committee and some new ideas we have really turned it around,” and despite mixed results on the field morale was high, “we are really looking forward to next year and it is great to see the high level of junior participation (three junior teams) and enthusiasm as it is the kids who are the future of the club.”

As for the cricket, after a blazing start that netted 18 runs off the first 3 overs a collapse saw Yankalilla try to consolidate. The Sponsors were treated in the afternoon with some spectacular big hitting by captain Greg Whittlesea (77) ably supported by Luke Bartlett (19) which enabled Yankalilla to post a reasonable target of 147.

Chris Martin was the best of the bowlers for Myponga taking 3/17 off 13 miserly overs.

While a few runs short of a great target it promises to provide an interesting spectacle next week as Myponga seeks first innings points to secure second place on the ladder.

The club would like to especially thank Trish and Gary Hogben, Nikki Wilcocks and Mark Schlein for their efforts in making the day a success. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor, the club has packages that are affordable and provide opportunities like the Sponsors Day and the upcoming Tiger Trail (Winery tour) to enjoy the rewards of supporting a local community organisation. Also, anyone interested in playing next season is encouraged to contact Chris Bartlett on 0417833073.

Sailing Club News

A

s the summer progresses we have had some great Sundays on the beach but not always good for sailing. We have had either very strong winds or very light winds, not many ‘Goldilocks days.’ On the 31st of January it was blowing a gale and we had some top Sabre sailors visiting our club from Adelaide. It was good to see these sailors fly across the water with their Sabre dinghies in trying conditions. We had many boats ‘fall-over’ that day which kept our committee boat very busy doing recovery work.

Steve Rogers did a sterling job sailing back several boats. The following Sunday the wind was so light that no racing took part. Several of us went out on the water for a ‘play.’ It was good just to drift along looking down through the crystal clear water looking at the fish and the

reef formations in Lady Bay. I personally had a pod of dolphins to keep me company for a while. We are so lucky here having the Gulf waters, which are so pristine. I remember back in the United Kingdom where the water always looks so muddy due to the big strong tides.

We had several of our member’s travel over to Point Turton to sail their Mosquitoes in the State Titles. Unfortunately the weather was fickle and not much racing took part. The club also welcomes back Mary and Cat who have been up in Cairns for a year. Hopefully the weather will start to settle down and we can get in some good sailing because we still get good numbers turning up every Sunday. See you on the beach.

A

t our January meeting our guest speaker was Ian Fowler who, with his wife Gail, lives at Myponga. Ian shared with us his experiences as a volunteer in Thailand where he and Gail worked with young children who had been born to HIV positive mothers.

Virtually an orphanage, the Agape children’s home, cares for babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and school age children, the oldest surviving child now ten years old. Ian pointed out that though some of the children were born HIV negative they later became positive and needed the costly treatment that would set them on the road to recovery. Once a child was HIV negative he or she could be adopted. Ian showed us his heart rending photographs of some of the children who later died, their immune systems unable to fight off common childhood illnesses which children in our country invariably survive. One child, making a Christmas wish said, “I

just want to be well.”

On the morning shift Ian’s day began in a room overcrowded with cots which had to be disinfected, and its floors swept and mopped. Then he helped feed the little ones. The school aged children were taken three or four kilometres to an “accepting” school, while babies, crawlers and walkers were left in the care of the volunteers.

After school, the older children were taken on picnics to a park, and on returning to the home watched television, “The Wiggles” one of their favourite shows. With no room available for personal possessions all toys went into a toy pool. However, on their birthday each child was given a toy that was theirs for that special day.

Accompanying himself on his piano accordion Ian sang songs about Australia’s native fauna, the children learning about the kookaburra, cockatoo, wallaby, wombat and kangaroo.

For anyone wishing to be a volunteer no experience is needed, however, in the Agape home, twelve kilometres from Chiang Mai, they preferred females between the ages of eighteen and thirty, though older volunteers are accepted.

The minimum stay for volunteers is three months, though the orphanage prefers a commitment of from six to twelve months. The long stay volunteers are usually supported by a church group back in their own country. Gail and Ian arranged and paid for their own accommodation, and had to learn Thai, a tonal language, which is one of the more difficult ones to learn. They also had “lots of immunisations”.

Two years later Ian and Gail went back to Agape on a visit to find that the orphanage had moved into a new building which accommodates more than eighty-five children. The Thai

0 years ago in February Eric Wilkins a shack owner at Myponga beach mentioned to Bruce Berry that he would turn 80 on Easter Sunday and that he had never had a birthday party in his life.. The shackies a close knit group led by Bruce decided to surprise Eric and give him a party, a lamb was procured and cooked on the spit and the ladies supplied the veggies, salads and sweets. The event was an outstanding success and it brought the residents closer together. And each year since Eric’s birthday has been celebrated on Easter Sunday Sadly Eric passed away in 1991 but the tradition has continued and this marks the 30th anniversary and toasts will be honoured to the man who bonded the shackies together and helped to foster that community spirit which is stronger than ever on the beachfront shacks.

This year up to 60 people residents, past residents and invited guests will gather at Berry’s shack to honour the man who through having a birthday cemented those friendships; each year Eric and his wife Ailsa organised an Easter egg hunt for the children and although they are parents themselves today they have fond memories of the man who hid eggs in the funniest of places.

Bruce Berry was the chief cook and master of the spit for many years rising at 3am to light the fire and get a good bed of coals so that the lamb or pig was cooked to perfection, and Kaye his wife still superintends the vegetables and sweets and makes sure no one goes away hungry.

One year it rained cats and dogs just as the carving was finished and 60 crowded into the shack elbow to elbow - no one complained. It brought them closer together These days with a verandah which can be enclosed and cement floors the spirit of Eric lives on and we think of that day 30 years ago when comradeship had a new meaning on Myponga Beach.

Rotary Club of Yankalilla

n Saturday 13 February members, partners and friends of the Rotary Club of Yankalilla took part in a Vocational Visit to Aldinga Airfield, the home of Adelaide Biplanes and Flying School Adelaide.

Creative Director Gaylene Smith and her husband Martyn, who is Managing Director, Chief Pilot General Aviation and Recreational and Tailwheel Flying Instructor, set out to establish what their website describes as ‘a [flying] school that would be the most motivating, challengingly-fun, inspiringly-easy going and safe place to learn the aviation art’.

Gaylene and Martin have certainly done just that. Martyn is a 15,000-hour flying veteran whose career spans some 25 years, including 15 years spent as Training Captain with international airlines based in the United Kingdom.

On arrival at the airfield we were checked out by ‘Security Officer’ Snoopy Smith, a keen little terrier who made sure that we only had the best of intentions. Having received the lick of approval from Snoopy, Gaylene led us on a tour of the airfield, showing us through their very comfortable and ‘user-friendly’ establishment.

We were able to view first-hand the various aircraft used by the school, and also for charter and scenic joy flights. The aircraft include Cessna, Piper Super Cub, Cirrus SR20 & SR22, and the GA8 Airvan.

Visitors to the airfield are also able to enjoy flights in a Waco biplane, or experience the exhilaration of flying in a vintage Tiger Moth aircraft. For those who are looking for an adrenalin rush, the Super Decathlon aerobatic flight would offer an experience to be remembered. Gaylene explained to us that students are able to learn to fly in a very relaxed, stress free and low cost environment at the airfield. A highlight of our tour was seeing the new state-of-the-art flight simulator that will be commissioned this week to facilitate pilot training, especially in the area of night flying.

Our visit was a direct result of Gaylene attending one of our meetings as a guest speaker. Gaylene brought along to that meeting a pilot who flies for Angel Flight, an organisation that facilitates and coordinates non-emergency flights for people who are suffering from medical conditions. These flights assist country people who are trying to deal with the enormous difficulties of ill health, financial hardship and vast distances. Angel Flights are absolutely free, and are projects we undertake in our local organised to take patients, along with a community, nationally and internationally, relative or friend, to medical facilities and enjoy our fellowship. across Australia. Pilots flying Angel Flight Hanna Law, missions are all volunteers, giving freely of Publicity Officer their time and expertise.

Health professionals (doctors, nurses, social workers etc) are able to submit a ‘mission request’ on behalf of patients. Members of our club were very impressed by the work of Angel Flight, so Dr Lyn Gardiner presented Gaylene with a cheque for $250 to pass on to Angel Flight on our behalf.

After our tour of the airfield, we adjourned to the shady pergola area for coffee (the airfield boasts a fine café with a great assortment of food and drinks), and watched aircraft coming and going while we chatted. Gaylene told us that everyone is welcome to come to the airfield during opening hours – to just sit and watch, to take a flight, or to learn to become a pilot.

Clearly Gaylene and Martyn have a passion for all things relating to not only aviation, but also to air safety. A quote by Leonardo da Vinci (featured on their website) perhaps describes their passion most accurately: ‘When once you have tasted flight, you will Dr Lyn Gardiner with Gaylene Smith forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.’

wish to sincerely thank members of Yankalilla Art for stepping into the breach when I was called away before the end of the session. Your help and support was much appreciated.

Our Acquisitive Exhibition, the first of its kind for us, last November proved to be very enjoyable and well supported. The winner was Bill Truslove with his pastel painting of the cove below the Bluff in Victor Harbor and which now hangs proudly in the Southern Fleurieu Family Clinic who kindly sponsored the event.

WOW ! what a start to our 2010 Art year. I think that we had the highest number of participant ever, which was most gratifying. I hope that this will be the forerunner of things to come.

Richard Rogers, sponsored by Chroma paints, was our tutor at this meeting.

He proved to be an enthusiastic exponent of the use of acrylics. His main interest is in land and seascapes.

Throughout January he had an exciting exhibition in gallery 88. If you missed that you missed a treat. Recently he won 3rd prize in the International Artists Landscape competition. His bright and cheery picture can be seen on page 7 of the magazine. He works with Atelier Interactive Acrylic paints and kindly provided paint and media for this session.

Roger’s step by step demonstration was clear and easy to follow. He was strong in his

application of colour and clearly showed various brush stroke techniques which made his picture come alive. A variety of shades of yellow was prominent in his work which possibly accounted for its vibrancy. After the demonstration and the bevy of questions we all settled down to work with Richard doing the rounds with advice and answering queries. A most useful piece of information was how to correct ‘mistakes’ in a painting and here Richard gave really constructive advice.

Several members found parts of their work not to their liking and by using these paintings he was able to show all members how to correct mistakes simply. This session proved to be enjoyed by all our members and, maybe, we have a few converts now willing to give acrylics a serious go.

Members from Yankalilla Art (gallery 88) are enjoying a successful exhibition a Café Asis until the end of February. Two paintings have been sold, so don’t miss the opportunity to view the remaining. Remember, paintings do make very special gifts for everyone.

he Sanders hall was full of activity on the 5th 6th and 7th January as the members of the local Threads quilting group, together with some visitors from Fleurieu quilters enjoyed their annual charity quilting bee. By the end of Thursday a number of quilts were finished, others were waiting their turn to be quilted and fabric had been cut waiting to be pieced, giving us plenty to do in the coming months.

Most of these quilts are given to groups who support the homeless but some of them end up being auctioned for local charities.

Threads meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, from 9.30am all are welcome.

The proceeds of sale of the donated quilts was $5,755.00 and Fleurieu Quilters made a profit of $3,500.00 on the sale of raffle tickets, door money, shop sales and profit on the catering. This $3,500.00 was distributed to local charities on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

We are very grateful to everyone who entered quilts into the Auction, especially those who gave their fabric, time and effort into making quilts to be sold for charity. Also many thanks to the members of Yankalilla Lions and Fleurieu Quilters who worked so hard to make the exhibition so successful.

Council calls for confirmation on TV towers

he District Council of Yankalilla wants a public assurance from the Federal Government that local transmission towers are among about 100 community-managed transmissions towers around Australia earmarked for conversion from analogue to digital.

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, announced recently that 100 community-managed towers will be converted. He also announced that ‘black spots’ unable to receive tower signals will have access to satellite coverage.

District Council of Yankalilla Mayor Peter Whitford said Council welcomes the move as a step in the right direction.

“The Federal Government finally is responding to the concerns of local communities, including ours, but Council has not received any confirmation that our towers are among those to be converted before analogue signal is turned off,” Mayor Whitford said.

“Yankalilla is a part of the Adelaide Metropolitan Broadcast Licensed Area and we insist on the same

The district’s analogue signal originates from the Mount Lofty transmission towers and arrives via a local relay system that serves Yankalilla, Normanville, Carrickalinga, Myponga and Cape Jervis. It was installed in 1991 with Council and the community sharing the cost.

Mayor Whitford said Senator Conroy’s announcement was, for the first time, official recognition of what the Yankalilla district and community had been saying for some time.

“The Government now acknowledges that we have a case and that communities like ours deserve equity in vital television services,” Mayor Whitford said.

“We still need the Government to confirm that Yankalilla will be one of the 100 to be converted and maintained but this is a first victory for our Council and our community.

It’s a breakthrough and a credit to everyone’s perseverance.

“I am confident that we can prevail if we stick to our guns.”

Mayor Whitford said Council had two objectives with the

Government: Conversion and maintenance of the towers at no cost to the community.

Leafy Sea Dragon Festival public meeting

P

lanning for the 2011 Festival is about to begin in earnest with the first public meeting to be held on 14 April 2010 at 7.00pm at ‘The Centre’ this is the building in the Yankalilla Youth Park (skate park) right next to the Yankalilla Area School oval.

The Centre will be home for the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival 2011. It is a light and bright meeting place designed for community use and will be a great base to plan and run the next festival from. If you have already been to ‘The Centre’ I’m sure you would agree. If you haven’t the public meeting is your chance.

The public meeting is for all people and groups interested in the festival. The planning group has not been idle and have the basics in place, which will be outlined at the meeting and ar keen to find out what the community has install for the next festival. If you are planning to stage an event we will have registration forms available and the festival’s official program

data base will be open for business.

If you are new to the festival the public meetings are a great place to find out how it happens and to share your ideas, so please come along and give us your input.

The Festival is always in need of volunteers to assist with administration, planning, marketing, distribution and ideas so if you can help us to organise another vibrant and successful Leafy Sea Dragon Festival that highlights everything that is good about our district we would love to hear from you. Local history project launched on Australia Day

A

replica statue to commemorate the landing of the first Surveyor-General, Colonel William Light, and the birth of the first female white child in the colony of South Australia, Fanny Lipson Finnis was launched on Tuesday 26 January at Second Valley on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.

Chairman for the Second Valley Progress Association (SVPA) David Olsson said the investment in this historical project has captured the interest of the local community who have been able to reflect on the national significance of the connection to Colonel William Light who sailed into Rapid Bay on the 8 September 1836 before South Australia had been officially proclaimed as a Colony with his Deputy Surveyor, Lieutenant Finniss.

The project submitted to the Australian Government under the Commemoration of Historic Events and Famous Persons Program (CHEFP) by the SVPA included: Funding support by the Department for Environment, Heritage and the Arts ($5,349) Funding and in-kind support from the District Council of Yankalilla In-kind support from the Second Valley Progress Association The replica statue replaces the original fountain with a statue of a small girl erected during the South Australian Centenary celebrations in 1936. The original fountain was apparently damaged in a car accident many years ago and mysteriously disappeared.

The business owners are wearing big smiles and comments have been “the people poured through the doors and it was hard to keep up” “business has been great” and “demand has never been higher”. When we locals think we are being slightly inconvenienced when visitors share our “little bit of heaven” we must take comfort from the fact that is a small price to pay for the wealth and employment generated.

THE COMMUNITY PARK As I mentioned previously Council purchased land at Normanville for a community park. The Council will have a tent in the park on Saturday 6th March and encourages people to come and have a walk round and a look at the plans and make suggestions which can include anything from a “Friends of the Park” garden to a community wood-fired oven! THE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE By the time you read this the Visitor Information Centre and Museum complex will be nearing completion. After waiting years for a new building it is looking great and with our excellent museum open daily the complex will be a great asset for our district

NOT JUST ROADS AND RUBBISH! Recently I was asked to give a presentation at Endeavour School on Council’s role. I told the children that besides roads and rubbish the council supported the building of a Youth and Community Centre, a skate park, Visitor Information Centre, built playgrounds, BBQ,s and toilet blocks. It supports a Library, a community bus, community care cars and it looked after community parks and assisted sporting and community clubs. The list went on and the children were clearly surprised at what we do.

am somewhat puzzled by Councillor Schlein’s comments in his column “Point of View” (Yankalilla Regional News, Jan/ Feb 2010, p. 14). It was my–perhaps erroneous–understanding that we were always going to receive digital TV in the area by the end 2013 at the latest. The issue in question was one of how, rather than when, and Minister Connor’s media release of January 5, 2010 does very little to clarify the “how”.

One could be mistaken for thinking that, based on Councillor Schlein’s remarks, the issue is now fully resolved and the current transmission towers will be upgraded so that residents will not have to fork out significant funds to install a satellite dish. It was clear from the meeting held in Council chambers in August last year that residents were most concerned they would have to install satellite dishes which, apart from the cost to individual residents, would also be a visual eyesore. The second major issue of concern was the content of the digital broadcasts. The comments in the Minister’s media release do not in fact clarify these matters at all.

To quote from the media release … “Under an agreement reached with all television broadcasters across Australia, broadcasters will upgrade more than 100 existing regional analogue ‘self-help’ transmission facilities to operate in digital, while the Government will fully fund and build a new digital satellite broadcasting service for regional viewers who are unable to receive digital television from those facilities” There is nothing in the release to say that the current transmission towers in the Yankalilla district will be part of this upgrade, although of course I sincerely hope they will be! At the time of writing no decision had yet been announced as to which sites would be upgraded. In addition, if we were forced to go to the satellite option, even the promise of a new digital satellite service does not in any way guarantee local content as it is more likely to be designed to a “one size fits all” format for economic reasons. So goodbye local content and welcome Eastern states news.

I sincerely hope it will come to pass, but at this stage we may have been given false hope. I received an email from the Minister’s office recently which in no way indicated that local transmission facilities would be upgraded. The only promise was

that we would receive digital TV, which of course we had already been told about at the August 2009 meeting. am writing this in response to the article in the February edition of the Yankalilla Regional news by councillor Malcolm Schlein "GREAT NEWS ON DIGITAL T.V. While the substance of the article is true, I don't believe that it portrays the meaning of the Minister’s press release.

Malcolm infers by his enthusiasm & words that we will have the same television programs as people in Adelaide. I believe this is not the case. The statement that "All regional Australians will have the same television services as people in the cities" doesn't mean that the people in the Yankalilla/Normanville area will have the same television programs as people in Adelaide. It means that by satellite (As stated in the Ministers' press release) we will have the same television channels as those people in all capital cities, however the programs will be the programs that are uplinked to the satellite, possibly Eastern seaboard programs, plus one dedicated channel for local news. The Minister also stated that under an agreement reached with broadcasters across Australia, Broadcasters (not the government) will upgrade more than 100 existing self-help transmission facilities to operate in digital. With approximately 650 self-help sites across Australia, could we be lucky? So far, the government has promised exactly what it said it would in the beginning, NO government upgrade to our self-help transmission sites, Satellite T.V. Plus a dedicated news channel. If we were going to have Adelaide programs why would we need a dedicated news channel? And just to point out another piece of information, it has been reported in the press that pensioners will receive a subsidy towards the cost of satellite dish & receivers, this is not completely true, as only households with at least one resident who is on the maximum rate of one of the following payments: Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment, DVA Service Pension, or DVA Income Support Supplement, will receive a subsidy. This means that households that only have people on part pensions will not

Further more, as a piece of good news, (just received) I have information that states that it is "highly likely" that Yankalilla will be upgraded to digital, & therefore the satellite service would not be necessary for viewers served by this upgraded transmitter.

So there you have it, if we sell out we can all move to Alexandrina or Onkaparinga and live in a state of utopia, of course there is a flaw in my theory and that is who is going to buy in to start this snowball effect...mmmm, and all this worry for a few extra dollars. The only reason councils can offer lower rates is if the infrastructure costs are less to maintain or the mass of residents is such that they can collect enough rates to cover their running costs. Personally I would rather cough up the extra $100 to ensure we stay in charge of our services to the district and not be dependant on outside councillors making decisions about our community.

A

t the end of last year parents of the Annexe children were unceremoniously told the Annexe will not be available 5 days a week any longer but cut down to only 3.

We are constantly told how special and important to the community the Annexe is but that budget cuts made a closure for two days a week necessary.

Would it be acceptable for your child or grandchild’s class to be dealt with in such a way?

Lack of funding available is what we were told. That’s a l i t t l e h a r d t o s w a l l ow considering Yankalilla Area School has just been given $1.5 million to spend.

A year’s salary for the 2 days would be less than $15,000 for a whole year before tax. Our parents offered to pay this amount privately. This was instantly rejected by the deputy principal with no explanation

given.

We were told the current number of children attending was too low to warrant a teacher, however we had offered for 9 reception children, to attend for the term at the Annexe, which was refused. A new class made up for them due to the already very large class sizes at Yankalilla Area School, Again by the deputy we were told that each parent of those nine children were personally contacted and refused to allow their reception children to be placed in the “class” called the Annexe for a term. Taking a teacher away from an already under resourced special education.

I am a parent of three children, aged 7, 9, and 16 who have attended ‘The Annexe’. My eldest son loved his time learning there up until he reached the year 10 age limit.

respected student. It is clear to family and friends my son has a new found sense of confidence the Annexe is responsible for.

Teacher’s comments have reinforced this to me. Responses along these lines seem to be the constant style of staff reports of all our children who have ventured ‘over the road’.

Y.A.S.’s brightest stars had all had a background in the Annexe.

For me very personally, the Annexe has been an enormous source of emotional support for myself and my children following several years of being victims of domestic violence.

It’s at these times the families and friends of the Annexe are there for support. I am amazed how quickly not only my children but others I have spent time with respond and recuperate from the love and care demonstrated to them through the unique style of education that Honor HarrisJones offers.

As well as the close relationship the children of the Annexe demonstrate towards each other.

We need this support to be able to be continuously provided.

These children deserve a flourishing Annexe to come to.

Not a hobbled one.

I volunteer at the Annexe as often as I am able, assisting our teacher to do the fantastic job that she does. I also volunteer as a management committee member and as fund raising coordinator.

As you may not already be aware, the Annexe success is absolutely due to parent involvement. It has been this way for 34 years.

For those of us that are dedicated to this ‘R-9 School’( though we are constantly reminded we are ‘just another class of the Yankalilla Area School as far as funding goes), the pain of being told that this life skill building, energy giving, educationally wonderful 5 day a week system,

I’m extremely concerned for the welfare of three of our students who each have Asperger’s syndrome. The parents of these children have jumped through enough ‘state school’ hoops and have found their home here with us. The massive improvements

in the social skills and the education of these children astound me. It has to be the environment and the teaching of the philosophy employed at the Annexe.

I very much hope that you, our local community, take an interest in us and assist us in any way possible to ensure this error of this incomprehensible nature is reversed quickly to avoid further trauma and heart

ache for our Annexe parents and children.

I would like to invite all previous students and families and supporters of the Annexe who understand the importance of such a wonderful place to contact me via the Annexe.

This would be a great shame and would be caused by you. Please do the right thing and also consider other dog owners who use these areas. Also I would like to know what it is that makes you think you are so privileged as to not have to pick up after your dogs as the rest of us do?

Please also remember, these facilities are mainly used by the young people of our area for their sporting activities and not just for dog owners. Be a responsible dog owner or you could possibly spoil it for the majority of us.

Beach Café under fire again

agree with K. Smith’s comments about the Normanville Beach Café (Yankalilla News, January/ February.) What was once a delightful venue showcasing the Fleurieu, Australia’s best-kept secret, is now a bad joke. Not only are opening hours apparently at the whim of the new lessee, but compared with the previous management, food quality and service are down and prices are up.

But wait, it gets worse. My wife and I went there for lunch recently on a Sunday, ordered our meals, and sat down. The waitress followed us to our table and demanded that she hold a credit card before we could be served. When I objected, saying I would be happy to pay at the end of our meal – just like 99 per cent of all restaurants around the world – the waitress said she would have to speak to her manager. She made a phone call and returned to our table saying it would be all right – so long as we handed over a drivers’ licence! When we again objected we were told “It’s very open

would like to congratulate the 2009 Yankalilla Area School Year 12 students on their excellent results particularly in Tertiary Entrance Scores. The results they achieved were above average in the state and the best in the district, The students are a credit to themselves, their families and the school. Once again the Yankalilla Area School has worked together with the families to develop a group of mature, independently motivated, delightful young adults. I am sure these young people will go on to contribute a great deal to not just our community but the wider community. Past students from the Yankalilla Area School are already a huge asset to this community in the successful businesses they run. They also provide services to community groups, including sporting clubs and youth groups and they give pleasant and competent customer service in a wide range of local retail, trade, government and hospitality outlets. Once the fire was contained the CFS volunteers on appliances from far and wide spent countless personal hours around the clock mopping up hot spots and blacking out the fire ground in very steep challenging country supported by the Rapid Bay Brigade, the Delamere Store, Salvos, Yankalilla Lions Club and St Johns who provided welfare and medical support.

Thanks to all those who have offered me support and help after the fire. It all means so much to me. God I love living in this community.

time ago that a kangaroo viewing area was going to be developed on the South Road at Myponga so that tourist can safely pull off the road to view and photograph the kangaroos.

For many tourists, be they overseas or local it would be the first time they see kangaroos in the wild. The second attraction is our local wind farm near Cape Jervis. There is a great little area at the foot of one of the wind turbines with well-designed information boards. Sadly there is little or no signage on the South Road prior to Cape Jervis to tell you the road to turn off to get to this viewing area.

Perhaps a review of this revenue raising policy should be done.

y sister and I (with the addition of children over the years) have been holidaying at Carrickalinga every summer for the past 10 years.

During this time we have frequented many of your community's businesses and have always been made to feel very welcome (not always the case in tourist locations). Our suitcases go home heavier every year due to your vast array of clothing (op, surf and DVD) shops and gift stores, that are all staffed by extremely friendly and chatty people. on returning this year we were looking forward to our annual pilgrimage to the Surf life Saving Club at Normanville for our Friday night feast - we understand from speaking to some locals that this was no longer an option due to volunteer burn-out.

We were saddened to no longer be able to enjoy the view and hospitality. We were however very pleased to find the flyer for the Yankalilla Bay Shuttle Service and very easily booked an extremely affordable return trip for the family with Nicky to the Yankalilla Football Club, where we enjoyed a lovely meal and were made to feel most welcome. Busy Time for CFS Volunteers

T

he last week of January and the first week of February saw a huge spike in the responses from all CFS Brigades in the District over and above the normal Fires/Trees down/Floods etc., that members attend day and night.

The increase in calls was due to a number of serious fires, the first of which started on 22nd January at 10.30 am by lightening which simultaneously struck at Delamere just south of the township and Parawa in the forest. Due to the severe conditions the entire Southern Fleurieu CFS was responded as soon as it was known there were two fires.

Air support was called in and within short time we have 3 fixed wing aircrafts, 2 Helicopters and the “Elvis” sky crane all also in on the action. To back up our local crews as is now the practice, strike teams from neighbouring districts with additional CFS volunteers were quick to respond to assist during the day and as relief crews over the next 24 hours. At the height of this fire every group in Region 1 which covers the Adelaide Hills to Strathalbyn to the coast were involved with something in the order of 350 fire fighters and support personnel and 74 fire appliances.

FIRE #2 occurred on Monday 1st February at 3.43pm. This was once again centered in the Delamere area with sparks allegedly starting from a truck trailer with its support legs partially down causing a number of fires on the road side. The ones South of Delamere were quickly bought under control but ones to the north caught on and were heading towards the coast and the Rapid Bay township. This fire from an operational point of view was very similar again with a full CFS group response as soon as were aware of more than one fire.

Air support called for and in the air at short notice.

Neighbouring district strike teams called for and

responding at short notice. One of our Group Officers was less than ten minutes from scene when it started and was able to check the houses in the fire line to ensure they were vacant. Volunteer crews responded and no houses were lost. At the time the final count of crews exceeded 400 people and in the order of 80 fire appliances.

As if this wasn’t enough to test the patience of the volunteer we had yet another significant fire occurred on Friday 5th February. This time started by a lawnmower at Carrickalinga near Lancelotta Road.

By now this type of operation was almost on remote control and yet again the volunteers, the air support and the neighbouring strike teams swung into gear.

This fire was out by night fall despite some tense times and several houses and other assets at risk.

CFS crews filled the fixed wing aircraft 50 time for the first fire, 35 times for the second fire and 7 times for the third. This is not to mention the unknown number of refills that the various helicopters drew from dams.

Special mention needs to go to the air support at all these fires. Due to the conditions once again all brigades were responded from the word go as were

The planes left their Woodside air base, dropped their first load as our first appliance was arriving on scene and landed at the Second Valley Refilling Station just before the refilling crews arrived. The air support is an invaluable resource in reducing the risk of shortening the time till the fire is out.

As with most things these planes and helicopters can only do so much. It is up to the ground crews to go in and do the hard yard and black it out.

A

plaque on the small cottage at the corner of Main and Malakoff Streets in Yankalilla commemorates the Mary MacKillop school house that opened there in 1867. Just one year earlier Father Julian Woods and Mary McKillop had set about founding the religious order, the Sisters of St. Joseph, at Penola.

Their intention was to provide Catholic education for the children of poor country families, and to care for orphans and needy persons who were not otherwise provided for.

Mary McKillop, born in Melbourne in 1842, knew from an early age that she wanted to be a nun. As a young adult she worked as a governess in the Penola area where she met Father Woods, then taught at a Catholic school in Portland, Victoria. At Father Woods’ invitation she became a teacher at the Catholic school in Penola in 1866 and on the 19th March (the feast of St. Joseph) donned a simple black habit to become the first Sister of St. Joseph. In the following April Father Woods summoned Mary to

Adelaide where she and two other nuns, took charge of S. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral Hall School.

On 15 August 1867 Mary, now Sister Mary of the Cross, took her vows and became the first professed Sister of St. Joseph. In October 1867 two Sisters (Sister Clare and Sister Francis of the Five Wounds) were sent to open the school at Yankalilla, though both were soon moved to other schools. In the order’s early years new schools were continually being opened, which necessitated frequent exchanges of sisters between schools.

In November of that year Father Woods reported that the locals were giving their generous assistance to the Sisters. He also praised the parents for sending their children on the six and even eight mile ride to the school. Later, it was noticed that the attendance dropped off during very wet weather. The site of the school changed three times during the period that the Josephite nuns were in Yankalilla. The cottage bearing the plaque is believed to be the third and last site of the school.

Many of the school’s children would have been the sons and daughters of the Irish immigrants living in the area. Among the Irish settlers were names such as Ahern, Clarke, Comerford, Dahill, Kelly, O’Connor, Pyne and Sheehan.

According to the timetable drawn up by Father Woods the day was to begin with a hymn to St. Joseph and prayers, the morning then taken up with dictation, writing, arithmetic, and “tasks”. At midday there was “Examination of Conscience, Angelus, Calling the Roll, Catechism.” Then at 12.30 the children had an hour for “Recreation and Dinner”.

Afternoons were devoted to a wider range of studies and activities. For example, on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons children in the upper classes were to have lessons on mapping. At 3.30pm the afternoon attendance was to be marked and the children dismissed.

The Yankalilla school closed in 1874. The years from 1850 to 1868 had been a boom period with Yankalilla becoming one of the five major towns in the colony. By the late 1860s, the boom over, declining wheat yields hit small farmers, and, new land opening up in the north and on Yorke Peninsula led to a migration away from the southern Fleurieu. The Josephite school was not the only one to close, those at Lovely Valley, Cape Jervis, Talisker and Myponga Beach also closed, as did several churches.

e hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season. As none of the public holidays fell on a Thursday our bus service kept rolling without interruption.

WELCOME BACK to our driver Cheryl who had a few weeks inconvenienced with an eye complaint.

We enjoyed meeting the relief drivers and thank them for filling the breach and hope that they enjoyed our company.

WE ARE PLEASED to have Helen as a new volunteer. Bert's leg is out of plaster and he is back helping just as

wife Annie has severed a tendon in her ankle! Cheryl also received a card from Laurel who used to catch the bus from Second Valley. She has made a good recovery but regrets that she will not be returning to our district.

REGULAR SUPPORTERS/ USERS of the service are increasing gradually in number but of course we need a full complement of people getting on and off to get it anywhere near financially viable for the Council. We greatly appreciate the fact that they have kept the service going through these strained

economic times. Most of the users would be back to relying on the generosity of others to do their weekly shopping, hair appointments, coffee/lunch with friends, etc.

Not that most people aren't happy to provide this service (if they are aware of the need), but it is not always convenient on a regular basis. So the bus gives an obligation free opportunity every week to do what we need and want. Then our friends and family can be called upon for the odd occasion to take us to an appointment or special trip.

So, this year, WHO IS GOING TO

VOLUNTEER to assist on the bus?

It would be about once every 4 - 6 weeks, no strain, hardly an imposition. Take a trial ride, grab a schedule from the Library, Post Office, Visitor Information, ask at the Council or your regular shopping outlet.

n 1994 (almost sixteen years ago) the Yankalilla Bay Dune Care Group formed and commenced an active program of focused dune care activities. Such activities have included on-ground works such as access control, drift and exclusion fencing, signage and re-vegetation. Activities also included education and interpretation, as well as production of newsletter and brochures. The large four panel interpretive signs at the Normanville Foreshore and Carrickalinga south bay car-park are examples of this work.

Several members of this group have continued to work closely with the District Council of Yankalilla through the Yankalilla District Dunes Working Group to maintain a focus on protecting sand dunes and coastal areas in the district through a range of activities including policy development and on-ground works. The Council has recently reviewed its various working groups and this group has now been dissolved.

Members of the community are invited to become part of a new reference group for district coastal management matters to help conserve and protect the natural environmental integrity of our coast and dunes. The reference group will offer expertise in a range of environmental management matters to local, state and federal authorities. There are 2 bus trips coming up shortly for your enjoyment.

The first one day trip to Monarto Zoo on 22nd March 2010. The bus will leave Yankalilla Senior Citz at 8am, Victor Harbor 8.30am and Goolwa 9am. The cost of $49 per person includes the bus trip, morning tea, a half hour trip around the zoo, with full commentary, then on to Dundee’s Wildlife Park at Murray Bridge where you will be able to purchase your lunch. The club will subsidise the entry fee into Dundee’s for members. Non members are most welcome with an additional charge of $8 for Dundee’s. bookings close on the 8th March and payment in full must be made when making your booking.

The second bus trip is a 4 day one to the Copper Coast Triangle which includes Wallaroo, Kadina, Moonta and Pt Hughes.

The bus will leave Yankalilla Senior Citz at 8am, Victor Harbor 8.30am and Goolwa 9am on Tuesday 27th April, returning on Friday 30th.

The price of $290.00 per person includes the return bus trip, accommodation for the nights at the Cornucopia Hotel at Wallaroo, 3 days breakfasts in the dining room and 3 x 2 course dinners including salad and dessert bars, also touring of the area. Bushfire Ready – The Southern Fleurieu CFS is planning to hold another Bushfire Ready session in Yankalilla during the month of March. At the time of going to press details of date and venue were yet to be confirmed but if you are interested in finding out more please call the Normanville Natural Resource Centre on 8558 3644.

Bushfire Ready sessions cover topics such as Bushfire Behaviour; Bird Identification Workshops – The Normanville Natural Resource Centre was successful in receiving an NRM Achiever Grant from the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board and will be using the funds to run free Bird Identification workshop and field trips in April and May. The first workshop will be held on Thursday April 29 with a field day on Saturday May 1. Presented by Phil Barron, the sessions will cover bird identification techniques using bird guides, binoculars and bird calls. Selection and use of binoculars will be discussed and those who already own a pair of binoculars are encouraged to bring them along to the workshop. The sessions are open to all bird lovers with people who are visually impaired being encouraged to attend. A second workshop and field day, aimed at tourism based business operators will be held on Thursday April 27 and Saturday April 29. Birds of the Fleurieu will be a focus of all sessions. Places to these sessions will be strictly limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Plover Lovers – Late in 2009 the ABC Television Stateline Program visited the Yankalilla Area School to film students making Chick Shelters for Hooded Plover chicks. These shelters will be used to offer a safe haven for Hooded Plover chicks across the Fleurieu Peninsula during the breeding season which extends from August to April. The program went to air on Friday February 12th and can be viewed on the ABC website at www.abc.net.au/news/ video/2010/02/12/2818492.htm Recycling X-Rays – Recently a member of the local community came in to the Natural Resource Centre asking for information on where they could take old X-rays for recycling. X-ray films contain silver in the form of halides which can be extracted and converted into pure silver. y the time this article hits the press the surf season for 2009/2010 will only have about six weeks to go to finish on Easter Sunday 4th April.

There has been a healthy increase in the number of junior lifesavers and with that very welcome support from their parents and grandparents. Following the success of the Normanville junior carnival in December the club for the first time in many years sent a team to compete in an outside carnival at South Port on 17th January. It was a wild and windy day with a strong running sea.

However none of this daunted our juniors who competed in the march past, beach events and the swims. All put in a fine effort.

On Saturday 13th February we fielded another junior team at West Beach.

Normanville acquitted itself well with each of our competing juniors making finals of one or more events in which they were competing. A good weekend was enjoyed by all with a number of families staying at the West Beach caravan park to be on hand to support the team. The junior State Championships will be held at Somerton Beach on 27th and 28th of February. We welcome enquiries about junior membership and how parents and grandparents can get involved. Watches and Chocolat Our short stay in Paris, certainly whetted our appetites for the rest of our European tour.The weather good, overnight the skies cleared of threatening rain clouds as we set off at 6am for an all day trip before reaching Switzerland.

Our route took us through France with lunch at Beaune, the countryside looking very beautiful and the weather being kind as if sensing we wanted to enjoy this particular route, touching on the edge of Burgandy region before entering Switzerland at Bezel.

The mountains getting larger as we approached Lucerne, the lake very calm and, at 6.30 we arrived at our hotel, just time to get freshened up put a few clothes away and down to dinner at 7.30pm I don’t know

whether it was the illusion of cold because of the snow covering everything, but we certainly felt hungry and did justice to the excellent meal.

After dinner, we strolled around the town, marvelling at the snow still hanging around the mountain of Pilatus (our hotel named after it). Everything so neat and tidy, and gardens practically symmetrical in design. We stuck our heads into this huge recreation hall, and it turned out to be the practice headquarters for aspiring international tennis players, after watching for a while we then headed back to our hotel accompanied by the clanking of the bells from the cows assembled on the lower slopes of the snow

Luckily we were given a bonus of an extra hour in bed the following morning, so we really enjoyed that pleasure as it was going to be a ‘full-on’ day sight -seeing and shopping.

First stop though on our itinerary was a visit to the Lion Monument.

The history behind this memorial was so sad and tragic.

This 19th century masterpiece is dedicated to the memory of the brave stand made by the regiment of the Swiss Guards in Paris during the French Revolution in 1782, from its beginning on August 10 until the mob stormed the Royal Palace, the Tuilleries. King Louis XV1 ordered the Swiss guards to lay down their arms, consequently

they were literally torn to pieces by the crazed, murderous mob.

This Lion monument erection, was made possible by donations from other regiments. The Lion considered a symbol of bravery and strength was chosen as the main focus, he was portrayed with heart pierced by a lance, holding his protecting paw over the shield with the lily coat of arms, the emblem of the Bourbon Kings.

The Latin inscription carved in rock above the monument read “to the fidelity and bravery of the Swiss” - Below followed the names of the 26 officers who died defending the Tuileries” In the next episode we try a bit of shopping!

Trust your Bible – Prophecies come True The Amazing Prophecy of Daniel 11 he prophet Daniel, of the Bible, lived approximately 2500 years ago in the city of Babylon. He is famous for the children's stories of him being cast into the lion's den and the great God of heaven sending his angel to care for him. However he was one of the most famous men of his time not because of his miraculous survival amongst the lions but because of his wisdom. The king of Tyre had boasted while Daniel was alive, that he was "as wise as Daniel" (Ezekiel 28v3). This wisdom of Daniel's was not

something he had because of his high IQ but because he trusted in God and listened to what God said and studied what God revealed. In Dan9v2, it states that he knew when the city of Babylon would fall to the Medo-Persian invaders from his consideration of a prophecy of his contemporary prophet, Jeremiah, who had stated that the city would survive only seventy years from the fall of Jerusalem to Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah 25v12).

What else was revealed unto Daniel was also truly amazing. He was shown in Daniel 10 that he would die and rise again to be judged faithful and be given life eternal. Daniel like

anyone of us was then curious as to how long it would be, before he would be raised from the dead. God, who loved this man graciously revealed this to him in Daniel 11.

Now Daniel has remained in the grave at least 2500 years, so it is not surprising that this chapter of the Bible, Daniel 11, is long. Here God showed to him how long he would be there in the grave. It is a chapter of 45 verses. It describes all the major details in the Middle East where Daniel had lived. It covers what was to happen from Daniel's day until his resurrection.

However what is so compelling and utterly amazing to us today, is how accurate this chapter is. We, I suppose, shouldn't be amazed by it, because after all, it was revealed to Daniel by God. God had stated that He knows the "end from the beginning" (Isaiah 46v10), so He can accurately describe from 2500 years ago, all that would happen from then to now.

This chapter of course was written for Daniel and not primarily for us. It was of no purpose to say to Daniel that a man called Alexander the Great would do this or that, because Daniel wouldn't kn ow who Alexander the Great was. So God described how that a "mighty king" would arise from "the realm of Grecia" (Dan 11v2-3) and defeat the Medo-Persian empire that then ruled.

Using this sort of language, the whole chapter moves amazingly though all of the Middle Eastern history. Daniel was then told that the empire of Alexander the Great would be divided into four. Each region would be ruled by one of his four generals.

These generals would become kings who would be replaced by others like them. They would each wax and wane in power.

However some would invade Israel.

This Daniel would be interested in, so God highlighted those details that related to Daniel's homeland. He described the Maccabees, the Roman occupation right through to the Turkish control of Jerusalem.

We find this interesting because the chapter then describes the "king of the south" or the power in control of Egypt pushing the Turk out of the land of Israel (Dan 11v40). This happened in World War 1 when the British and Anzac forces took Jerusalem and the Turk was forced to leave Palestine. This is a fascinating time because this is called "the time of the end". It is called this because only a few major events remain to happen in the Middle East before "the great prince" of Daniel 12v1 comes. He is called "Michael".

"Michael" in Hebrew means "like God". This is Jesus Christ, the son of God. After all who could be more "like God" than Christ. This must be so because Daniel is then told that the resurrection would occur (Daniel 12v2-3) and the faithful would be judged. This is when Christ will return.

The near return of Christ makes the last few verses of Daniel 11 very interesting to us. The second half of Daniel 11v40 through to the end of the chapter is all that remains to happen. Daniel 11v1-40 has accurately come to past over the last 2500 years. We can be confident that these five verses will happen exactly as God revealed to Daniel that they would happen. This may be the subject of the next article.

A Sad Day at the Farm

t’s not all joy on the land.

We love seeing the sheep and cattle happily chewing their cuds in lush grass or lying contentedly under a tree. But, things can happen – a cow goes down with milk fever, a horse gets caught in barbed wire, a heifer can’t get up after calving or a sheep is severely fly-blown.

For me, it’s a particularly sad day when a semi-trailer rattles in to pick up our lambs. As we load them on I’m haunted by the thought of where we’re sending them. I think about the time when their lovely white forms dotted the green paddocks and clusters of them raced around the dam banks.

Lambs are lovely. But, sadly, their

lives are cut short. As the truck rumbles down the drive and turns onto the main road I feel like a traitor.

Those innocent young creatures are going to the slaughter works. What did they do to deserve it? How can we be so cruel?

A time to remember We’re coming to the time of the year when we remember Jesus being crucified on a cross. A prophet had said: ‘He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.’

Like a lamb to the slaughter he went meekly - quietly - nothing could deter him. But unlike the young lambs loaded on the truck - having no idea of their fate, the Son of God knew where

he was headed. He knew a traitor would kiss his face, and enemies falsely accuse him. He anticipated the crown of thorns, mocking and flogging - the weight of the cross on his back and the thrust of the nails through his hands and feet and the awful pain and humiliation as he was hoisted up as an object of scorn.

Jesus was called ‘the Lamb of God’ (John 1:29). Lambs were a symbol of innocence and purity. Jesus was the most perfect person who ever lived - most undeserving of all that he suffered.

In 1970 I was seated in a large aircraft - headed for Japan. On board was a contingent of entertainers - among them, The Young Australian Singers who were selected to be part of Australia’s week of programs for The Word Exposition at Osaka.

At 30,000 feet above the earth the soft drone of the plane was subdued when the talented young singers, in flawless harmony, sang - All in the April evening. It’s beautiful music particularly when accompanied by a violin.

In 2009 over a third of our students undertook subjects enabling them to achieve a tertiary

n Friday February 5th Candice Bowen, the Leukaemia Foundation (SA) facilitator, came from the Foundation’s new quarters in Findon to host a morning tea for regional members at the Cancer Support Centre. Candice plans to visit the Centre every two months for an informal morning tea with leukaemia patients, carers and others interested. Please contact the Centre if you’re interested in meeting her and other members.

The Breast Cancer Support Group met on Thursday February 11th for morning tea and informal discussions with McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurse Cheryl Baxter. The group is planning a Mother's Day raffle to be drawn during the Thursday May 6th meeting at the Cancer Support Centre. First prize is a beautiful patchwork quilt, made and donated by Ann Wells from Queensland. The second prize, a “Mum's Indulgence Basket” comprises a selection of beauty and hair care products from local chemists and hair stylists. Tickets at $2 each will soon be available from the Centre and from Breast Cancer Support Group members.

The Meditation Group has been meeting at the Centre every Thursday afternoon at 2.30. The Craft Group meets every Friday afternoon, and the next meeting of the Men’s and Prostate Cancer Group will be at 10.30 am on Friday 19th March. Our Hospital Transport service is fully active, and we’re planning many other services and events.

W

ell, those famous GULLY WINDS reared there ugly head on Christmas day, carrying an unsuspecting tourist out to sea on a blow up rubber mattress. Luckily she was brought ashore by a passing boat badly shaken and cold.

We have been writing about these gully winds for a few years now, but still the message is not getting through. Just about every afternoon during the summer months, these gully winds (katabatic wind) flow down mountain slopes and out of valleys out to sea with tremendous force causing the unwary to be blown out to sea with little hope of swimming or paddling against it. I URGE ALL HOLIDAY MAKERS TO BE VERY CAUTIOUS OF THESES WINDS. Every year we have in excess of ten rescues caused by these winds blowing small inflatable craft, kayaks, wind surfers etc out to sea.

If caught by one of these winds, stay with your craft and don’t try and swim back to shore. Signal by waving your arms or shirt etc to raise the alarm. Help will arrive as soon as possible.

Another lucky escape from a possible tragedy was averted in late January, when one of our Myponga beach members Jim Stacey, was looking out to sea late one afternoon and thought he saw something unusual some five miles away in Aldinga Bay. On further investigation through a telescope, there

appeared to be three people clinging to a capsized cat. The alarm was raised and a rescue was put into motion. At this stage there were no reports of any mishap or persons missing in the Aldinga area. Sea rescue 55 from Myponga beach was crewed and put to sea as was Sea Rescue 5 from Wirrina skippered by Bruce Stark.

When SR55 arrived on the scene they found three very exhausted men. They had been trying to right the craft for some three hours, but as the mast and spars and one hull was full of water they had no luck. The skipper of SR55 quickly assessed that the medical condition of the three sailors was not good, and they were immediately rushed to Aldinga beach to a waiting Ambulance. SR55 returned to the last known position of the cat and with SR5 started a search for the capsized cat. The sea conditions were getting worse and with the onset of night the search was called off.

The following evening a passing cruiser spotted the up- turned cat some 10 nm out to sea. The Police water operations unit requested that the cat be towed to shore as it was a shipping hazard. SR5 and SR55 were sent out to find the craft and then set about to right it. This took some time , but eventually it was put back on an even keel. The tow back to Myponga was slow going and we had to be careful that the cat did not sink on us. I think that if we did not keep some momentum it would have gone down. It was just floating and one of our crew members had to board the cat and steer during the tow. We arrived back at Myponga Beach well after dark and delivered the cat to it’s grateful owner.

During the hot spell over the Christmas period, it came to our attention that some plastic type fuel lines used on some boats were coming off the fuel tank outlet pipes allowing petrol to gradually spill into the bilge. This could lead into a very dangerous situation and possibly cause an explosion. My advice is that you check your fuel lines and make sure that they are clamped tightly to the tank and any other place where there is a clamp. You don’t need much petrol in the bottom of a boat to explode, and this is indeed

a very serious event. You will get no warning and the next thing that you may be aware of is an almighty bang, if you survive to tell the tale. PLEASE CHECK YOUR FUEL LINES. Another event that is worth reporting was the explosion of a battery. The battery had been on a charger without venting the caps. The battery was taken off the charger, and the starter was engaged. There was a tremendous explosion blowing the battery to pieces. The only reason we can come up with is that the battery had a build up of hydrogen, and when the ignition was used there must have been a spark and ignited the gas. I saw the battery and it was not a pretty sight.

he tragic and violent death of vibrant, young people on our roads in recent weeks is a tragedy. It should give us all cause to reflect. Perhaps our first reflection should be on the way we drive. Do we drive responsibly and defensively? Do we stick to the speed limits? Do we obey the rules of the road and respect the rights of others on the road? If we are brutally honest, not one of us would be able to answer ‘Yes’ to any of these questions. These are not questions for learner or P-licence drivers but for every person that drives a motor vehicle. Every day of the week, we can see appalling examples of driving on our roads.

As drivers, we all have the potential to be involved in accidents and to be the cause of death or injury to others. Gaining, and continuing to hold, a driving licence is not a right. It is a privilege. This privilege brings with it a great responsibility. That responsibility extends to our passengers and to pedestrians and others on the road. We are also responsible for the mechanical integrity of the vehicles we drive. Having said that, I can see just how irresponsible it is for those who choose to do ‘burn-outs’ and other stunts. They diminish the integrity of the vehicle, putting them and others at risk.

I am sure that, among other methods, we need to improve the driver training of our young people. Some years ago I spoke to a Rotary Exchange student from Finland. I asked what his first impressions of Australia were. He said it was the number of fatal road accidents especially among young people. I have taken him at his word.

He believed the difference in the road fatalities lay in the way in which Finnish were trained.

There is so much more we can do. But if we continue to put young people into highpowered vehicles without adequate training and controls, the slaughter will continue.

Unless we can break the nexus between under-developed brains and alcohol consumption the result will be the same.

We do not need the knee-jerk reactions of Peter Goers and others who demand the removal of trees from our roads. What nonsense!! We do not live in JRR Tolkien’s Middle-earth where our woodlands are inhabited by Ents—trees that walk!! Trees do not cause the accidents. Driver behaviour does.

Improving the skills of our young people is a priority. Every time I read of a young person’s death on our roads, I am confronted with the loss of potential. The young person has been denied their full potential as a child of God. They die before they grow fully into the person God created them to be. They die before their skills and talents are brought fully into play for the benefit of their communities and our society.

The solution to this terrible problem has to be found outside politics. It goes beyond

scoring votes. It needs people of good will and intent to develop strategies. But it also needs people to set aside agendas and to be open to change.

Every time I hear an ambulance pass me with its siren blaring, I cross myself. I do the same when I pass accident scenes. And I say to myself, ‘There but for the grace of God go I’.

Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre

T

he staff at Yankalilla Community Children's Centre warmly welcome all children and their families to 2010.

Term one commenced busily with children familiarising themselves with kindy and childcare routines, some for the first time!

In weeks two and three of the new term, our featured learning’s included Letterland's ‘Annie Apple’ and Africa whereby children were involved in the painting and collaging of African shields, African ceremonial masks, stories from Africa, playing drums to world music as well as all things ‘apples!’

Children were given the opportunity to explore their 'feelings' and those of others more closely, through the sharing of stories, making 'feelings

faces' and fun role-playing with their teachers and each other.

In Weeks 4&5 we welcomed back 'Bouncy Ben' and learnt about Brazil. Children had great fun dressing up and dancing to music from Brazil after learning about objects that 'float and sink' with Derek.

A ‘b’ breakfast always proves to be good fun and we were able to share a healthy breakfast

(including bananas!) together and stay in our “pj’s” all day!

We look forward to the coming weeks of Term and all it's interesting learning’s and happy times.
