he Yankalilla Dragons Soccer Club has officially entered competition in 2007.There will be 2 Junior teams u9s & u11s entered in the school competition. Seniors have entered a team into the South Australian Amateur Soccer League in Division 6. Training has already been running 2 weeks and any interested players are encouraged to come try out for the club. The school comp is flexible and allows us to have 2 overaged players in both Junior teams that are no more than 1 year older than aged team ie:(a 12yr old can play under 11s if no more than 1yr older, A 10yr old can play u9s if no more than 1yr older.) So if you thought you missed out and or would like to come and play for the club turn up for training on Thursdays 4.30pm prompt.

The Senior team requires more players so get your boots on and come out to training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.30pm prompt.We need to start selecting line up for first game on April 1st.All players welcome and any players aged 15ys+ can play seniors with parent or guardians consent.

The coaches for Junior teams are Jamie Burton U11s and Richard King U9s.Seniors are a joint coaching partnership by Jamie Burton and Richard King (We are keen to hear from any other coaches who want to be involved).

The club has purchased new Soccer Strips for all grades and they look fantastic, top shelf. The goals are in fabrication stage so pretty soon the school oval will have a Soccer pitch on it.

All this was only possible due to the community's response to help us and special thanks to all those sponsors and donations which we gratefully accepted.Sponsors will be listed in our next article.I personally would like to thank Committee members Graeme & Astrid Little, Jamie Burton and Joseph & Rachel Gonzalez for their input and hard work in getting this club and running.

RECENTLY RETIRED? GOT SOME TIME TO SPARE?

he Community Visitors Scheme is looking for volunteers to visit some lonely residents in the Yankalilla Aged Care Facility.

The volunteer is matched where possible, with a resident who has similar interests, background, hobbies or sometimes another language. The volunteer is asked to visit the resident at least once a fortnight. The time can be spent just talking to the resident or taking them out on short trips around the neighbourhood.

The friendship that volunteers offer

is greatly valued by the residents and often very rewarding for the volunteer.

Support and reimbursement for travel and other out of pocket expenses is provided.

Volunteers, both men and women of all ages and backgrounds are needed.

ello readers, Well it is supposedly now Autumn...can’t guarantee this means rains though. We will all have to wait and see.

Can’t imagine too many people having to empty their water tanks before cleaning them, most would have struck the bottom a long time ago.

The Australia Day ceremony for Yankalilla was again held at Rapid Bay. The LSD Festival is coming in April, so not far away if you are involved and it will cater for everyone with its diverse array of entertainment, arts and crafts.

Many happy returns to Yankalilla Centre resident, Harry Marlow who turned 100 recently. Harry got his card from the Queen as you can see on the cover.

Many of the local roads have been or are being upgraded/fixed/overhauled etc and it should be wonderful when it is all finished.

In the mean time, we will have to put up with the seemingly never ending procession of road works.

Fleurieu Peninsula celebrates waterways

on’t be put off by the drought! South Australia’s boating playground, the Fleurieu Peninsula, is celebrating its unique waterways at a series of festivals in that started in February and run through March.

While there has been much publicity about the drought and dropping water levels over summer, river and lake levels are high enough for the popular South Australian Wooden Boat & Music Festival and the Boating Extravaganza, South Australia’s largest onwater boat show, to be staged.

“Some people come to the area expecting to see mud but are surprised to find water as far as the eye can see with people boating, fishing, sailing and skiing in both Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert,” Fleurieu Peninsula Marketing Manager Roz Becker says.

he Yankalilla Area School Community Annexe has been offering an alternative style of education on the South coast for the last 30 years. The "Annexe" began with a grant from the Special Projects fund under the Innovations Program of the Schools Commission.

In practice it is negotiated between families and the teacher. The "Annexe classroom" is a large historic building set on a .5 hectare of grounds with a creek along a boundary. The school house has 2 main teaching areas as well as a Kitchen & Art / Craft areas. The grounds contain 3 sheds, oval, sandpit, play ground and gardens.

These are cu rrently being redesigned with a drought resistant, food supply theme. In 2007 the Annexe will provide Parent participation days on Mondays and Fridays and Tuesday to Thursday will be the main curriculum delivery and monitoring days by the Annexe teacher. Six more for Hands of Fame

A

nother six famous country music names were immortalised in concrete in the Country Music Capital’s Hands of Fame, which took place on Saturday, January 27th.

The 2007 Hands of Fame names were announced by the Australian Country Music Foundation at the Roll of Renown Concert in Tamworth the previous week.

They are... James Blundell, Freddy Bowen, Ken Cameron, Peter Coad, Col Edmonds and Eric Watson.

Forty years a multi-talented entertainer, compere, promoter, judge and radio presenter, Freddy

Bowen - who now resides at Yankalilla - toured with The LeGarde Twins, Brian Young, Rick & Thel, Bill & Boyd, Reg Lindsay, the Gill Bros and more.

He has featured and supported hundreds of artists in club, festival and television appearances and has released five singles and an album.

The 2007 Hands of Fame imprinting ceremony was held at the Hands of Fame Cornerstone in Kable Avenue.

The Hands of Fame are coordinated for the City of Tamworth by the Australian Country Music Foundation.

FLEURIEU SCOTISH COUNTRY DANCERS CHANGE OF VENUE ue to renovations, we were not able to start the years dancing in our usual A.O.G. hall. Margaret our teacher was left with the task of finding an alternative hall at short notice. We will be using the R.S.L. hall for approx 3 months. Not as large as we are used to, but we can still get 2 sets dancing with a squeeze.

We all had a nice break over the Christmas period, but everyone is glad to be back dancing again.

We have been joined during December and until mid March, by a lady from South Africa. May is staying with her son in Willunga. When at home in South Africa, she loves to go Scottish country dancing and was happy to find a class to attend while on holiday. In South Africa they don’t have a break over the Christmas period so she was sorry to miss dancing during our break. May is an enthusiastic dancer and we will all miss her when she returns home.

iana Warwick has been at the school for four years as the teacher librarian, helping teachers and students with research and resource based learning. This, her fifth year, is back in the classroom with reception and year ones.

“They are so funny. There are times when you have to just go with the flow” is how Diana describes her class, “but they are very rewarding.”

Karen Putland has been teaching at the school for eleven years, this being her fifth as the Junior School coordinator. In the last few years she has taken on the demanding job of teaching reception students using a lot of flair and energy. “They are a delightful class” she says in amongst many funny stories of student’s reactions and comments.

I would like to publicly congratulate our Year 12’s from the “Class of 2006”. Although the student cohort was smaller than in the previous year, I am delighted to say that of the students that finished Year 12 all were able to achieve their South Australian Certificate of Education.

It was also significant that those students who enrolled in University and TAFE courses where able to achieve their own personal goals.

Special commendations also go to two of our students that achieved Very High Achievement results (A): Damien Clark in Vocational Education Studies and Rhiannon Clarke for English, Aboriginal Studies, Tourism and Mathematics These results once again demonstrate that the small classes, a caring and supportive learning environment and committed teaching staff provide all of our students with the opportunities to be successful learners.

DELAMERE C. W. A. FEBRUARY MEETING ll members were present when we started the day with craft. Emanda Fretwell joined us and instructed us in Lace Collage.

Everyone covered an address book and we were all very pleased with the result. So much so we are having another craft day doing the same thing again in April.

After Emanda left us we had our business meeting, one of the topics discussed was the death on the roads, after police chases in particular.

In the afternoon we went for a

pooled picnic lunch at Rapid Bay. What a lovely afternoon it was, sitting eating and chatting with friends in the shade.

For our next meeting on March 1st we are going to town. We hope to catch a train about 10 a.m. from Collonades and have lunch in the Pullman restaurant in the Casino at 12 noon.

Unfortunately, the Centre doesn’t have the facilities to include fresh produce. Lo cal artists and craftworkers are represented as well.

With over twenty different producers on display the impact is impressive. It indicates that there is a lot more local production than we think.

Any producers or artists that haven’t been included are welcome to exhibit in the Centre at any time.

L E T T E R S What is happening in our District?

H

as anyone else noticed what is happening around our town and district?

There have been distinct changes over the past few years, most of which are definitely not in the best interests of the area.

Since the 1960's many older buildings in and around the Yankalilla township have disappeared to be replaced with buildings, which are completely out of character with the original "village" appearance of the town.

Visitors passing through our district would probably be very surprised to find the really historic significance this area has to the state, as there is a lack of signage on any sites of interest.

Only a few years ago the area surrounding Yankalilla was lush and green with large mature eucalypts, unfortunately many of these trees have been removed for housing and very little consideration has been given to replacing them. It takes many

years for an area to recover and probably longer still with the current drought conditions. Many of the existing trees are very stressed and will probably die, leaving the area looking even more depredated.

There has been quite a lot of beautifying done by Council in some areas, but could we please look to the future and try to retain our unique character (or what is left of it) to prevent it turning into just another suburb.

Tourists travelling the road from Yankalilla to Cape Jervis certainly don't have a very appealing entrance to Normanville with poor signage, dying trees (the elms on the main road) and gaps where the prunus trees have not been replaced.

All of this makes our area seem second-rate and "poor relation" to many other small towns who have harsher climates and less population than us but still manage to keep up an interesting, cared for appearance.

Councillors allowances

refer to Councillors' allowances, (Val Gubbin and Pauline Coulter -Yank News -Jan issue.) I wrote to our local VH Times, referring to the same subject. I received a telephone call from one VH councillor, defending the decided amount but, at the same time outlining expenses, such as running of the car, numerous copies of documents necessary for discussions, time spent on council business. I questioned the amount, stating that on $2000 less per annum, I had to live on what I received, and that amount had to cover all of my living expenses?

This particular councillor agreed whole heartedl y with my argument, but categorically denied that phone, car expenses were paid on top of that $12000. This same councillor calculated at least up to 20-30 hours per week were spent on council business, which I believe is stretching the truth a tad.

Multiply the number of councillors by the average hours stated on council business, then one would hope that we should have a very active, productive group for an expenditure of $120,000! I am a volunteer, and quite willingly put in two days per week regularly because I enjoy what I do without any thought of remuneration and, by the way, I am not obligated to do this! One wonders whether perhaps the word 'volunteer' and it's meaning is being abused. After all, $230 plus per week, is a nice little bonus.

Copy of a Letter to…The Premier, The Hon Mike Rann, 4.2.07 Dear Mr. Rann,

The Coorong Barrages and the Wellington Weir.

I

would like to draw your attention to a huge $80,000,000 un-opened tourist trail in our midst in South Australia and we don’t even know about it! I am referring to the five barrages built along the Coorong designed to keep seawater out of Lake Alexandrina and the River Murray. I strongly urge that these barrages be opened to cyclists and perhaps pedestrians,

as a great new tourist attraction for the State.

For example, the magnificent Tauwitchere Barrage is about 4 kilometres long and at present (as in the past) no members of the public, cyclists or motorists are allowed on this or any of the other 4 barrages, even though there are roads over them. I am not advocating that motorists be allowed to travel over the barrages.

I estimate that the cost of building the 5 barrages today would be at least $80,000,000. The total length of all the barrages is about 8 kilometres.

It would only take a stroke of the pen by the Government to open up these barrages to the public. When S.A. Water needs to run a truck across the barrages to open or shut sluice gates, suitable arrangements can be made with the cyclists. In these days of drought, the sluice gates are not shut or opened very often. The barrages could be opened to cyclists, for example, on weekends and public holidays for a start just to see how things go Also in the picture that I visualise, the proposed Wellington weir also plays a part. This should be built with a road over it to carry cyclists, and perhaps cars and trucks etc., and the expensive Wellington punt could then be closed. If you have a good map before you, my suggested cyclist’s route would be as follows:- Starting from Victor Harbor, cycle to Goolwa and cross the Goolwa barra ge onto Hindmarsh Island, then across the island to the Mundoo barrage.

Cross this barrage to Mundoo Island over to the Boundary Creek barrage and cross this to Ewe Island. Cycle across Ewe Island to the Ewe Island barrage and cross this to Tauwitchere Island and cross the island to the 4 kilometre long Tauwitchere barrage to Pelican Point. Cycle onto Mark Point, then up to Narrung (or alternatively cycle along a track from Mark Point to Long Point where there are toilets and fresh water available and then up to Narrung ) and then go by ferry to Malcolm Point to the Poltalloch Road. Follow this road to the junction of the Princess Highway at Ashville, then up to Wellington.

Cross the new, yet to be built, Wellington bridge/weir to the Langhorne Creek Road, (or travel up to Tailem Bend) and cycle up to Langhorne Creek and onto Strathalbyn, (or Milang) then onto Currency Creek and finish up at

Goolwa - a total distance of roughly 200km. A nice little day’s cycling trip! Overnight stays could be made at Victor Harbor or Goolwa. At Narrung, a lunch stop could be made where cyclists could hop into a good feed of Coorong mullet or mulloway and chips, cockles, oysters, prawns, kangaroo steaks and pies and quondong pies and cream, all washed down with litres of ginger beer. Wow! Or this lunch stop could be held at Tailem Bend. I can hardly wait for all this to happen! This would create a lot of extra employment in that area, mainly with the aboriginal population, which incidentally, is badly needed.

As a result of my suggestions, towns to benefit by hundreds of cyclists passing through each weekend would be Victor Harbor, Middleton, Goolwa, Narrang, Ashville, Wellington, Tailem Bend, Langhorne Creek and Strathalbyn (or Milang). I am sure cyclists would come from all over Australia to make this trip. And all would spend some money! A cycling trip at dusk or dawn over the barrages would be “out of this world”. I think my idea should be thoroughly investigated by the Minister for Tourism, the Hon. Jane Lomax-Smith (who is a cyclist), the Bicycle Institute of S.A., Bicycle S.A., the Fleurieu Peninsula Tourist organisations, the Alexandrina Council, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and the Water Supply Department.

What a magnificent cycle ride this would be for next year’s “Tour Down Under”. It would be mindboggling! I can think of nothing better than cycling over these barrages watching thousands of pelicans and other birds fly up and down the Coorong. I think I will start oiling up my cycle already!

We are looking for more tourists for South Australia, so what about it Mr. Rann? I think it would be the greatest cycle ride in South Australia, if not Australia. By the way, the person or Government Department who suggested in “The Advertiser” about 3 months ago that all these five barrages be pulled up and dismantled must have rocks in their heads!

To implement my idea, the only expense that the Government would be up for, is the cost of one or two public toilets and fresh water stations along the route, similar to the one at Long Point, located further East along the Coorong. If the route were to go to Long Point, I think only one other set of toilets and a fresh water supply would be needed. This cost would be very cheap for such an outstanding tourist attraction.

Why allow the magnificent structures of the 5 barrages to sit there being idle for 99% of the time when they could be put to good use for recreational purposes and the tourist industry? Come on South Australia - Wake up! When we have such great asset as this, we should use it! I know the Americans would use this facility double- quick if it was in their country. I know we are about 20 years behind the Americans in this way of thinking!

A good map to follow the suggested route is the newly published R.A.A. map of the Fleurieu Peninsula and Southern Adelaide Hills. Map No.3.

Rapid Bay Primary School News

T

he year 2006 ended most enjoyably with both classes’ fantastic end of year excursions.

The Junior Primaries spent fun day at Greenhills Adventure park and the year 4-7’s spent a night at the Adelaide zoo.

The Zoo Snooze was the end result of the class studies on bears throughout the world, their environments and their endangered status.

The children fundraised throughout the year and sponsored Sam, a sun bear, through Free The Bears. The class has continued with their sponsorship this year.

The highlight of the Zoo Snooze was being able to get up close and personal with the zoo’s sun bears, Dewi and Akbar.

In the morning the children were able to go into the sun bear

enclosure and hide the food that they had prepared the night before.

Everone was amazed at how quickly the bears could sniff out the food they thought was so sneakily hidden!

Our school was the very proud recipient of the Yankalilla Council’s Event Of The Year Award 2006 for our whole school musical production of “Kids in Camelot.”

Denise McGrath, helped by many of the students, accepted the award at the Australia Day ceremony at Rapid Bay on Friday 26th Jan. Denise accepted the award on behalf of all of the students, teachers and parents; past and present, who make this bi-annual event both possible and such a success.

YANKALILLA CUBS 2006 END OF YEAR CAMP

A

celebration of a great years cubbing culminated in a voyage across the seas to the great Kangaroo Island.

A group of excited young cubs plus a handful of brave parents plus two great leaders - Greg Air and Emanda Fretwell - left Cape Jervis on the KI Ferry on a Friday evening in December.

We had a somewhat lumpy and bumpy crossing and a few pale faces among the cub group as a result, but things soon brightened when we docked at Penneshaw.

The trip was fun filled. We had a fantastic tour guide provided by Sealink, dubbed by the cubs “Wake up Jeff”. Jeff chauffered us around providing non-stop comic relief, which included six continuous laps around the Admirals Arch round-about, hilarious jokes and interesting facts about the Island.

Our Base camp was at the Nicholas Bauding Research Station right next door to the Flinders Chase Visitors Centre and home to many tame and inquisitive native animal. There was

never a dull moment, visiting some of the Islands icons.

We visited Flinders Chase National Park, Platyupus Waterhole Walk, Remarkable Rocks (our tour guide managed to get all thirteen cubs plus two adults under and inside one of the smaller rocks….if is wasn’t for the sound emanating underneath you would never would of known we were there, truly remarkable!)

Seal Bay was a favourite stop, as was A d mi ra l s Ar ch , w hi c h wa s breathtaking in more ways than one (seals don’t use deodorant). Little Sahara was the best - we all climbed the biggest whitest sand dune we had ever seen and managed to jump off it, at least a hundred times…!

In between outings parents and leaders kept fuel tanks topped up with breakfasts, snacks, lunches and dinners whilst the cubs explored the science centre surrounds and made friends with the wildlife.

Penneshaw saw off on our return to the mainland with perfect weather.

The sea was calm and the setting sun painted a beautiful sky behind us - a

fitting end to a terrific weekend.

On behalf of the cubs and their parents we would like to extend a huge thank you to Greg Air and Emanda Fretwell for making this camp and other scouting activities a great success.

Unfortunately both Greg and Emanda are unable to continue in their roles as cub leaders in 2007. We desperately need leaders now or our Yankalilla Scouting Group will no longer be able to continue. Many positive and goodtime childhood memories are forged during club activities. In Cubs and Scouts the emphasis is on fun and adventure just what a kid needs!

Anyone over the age of 18 can become a leader. Can you be involved or do you know of anyone that would like to be involved? Full training and access to great facilities is provided.

Leafy Sea Dragon Festival Women preparing for the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival

A

round the Yankalilla district there are various women preparing for some of the 74 events planned for the 2007 Leafy Sea Dragon Festival.

In Inman Valley, quilters seen here on the job are preparing for an exhibition on the first weekend of the festival, 21 & 22 April. In addition to their individual efforts, they are creating a communal leafy quilt.

At Cape Jervis, a community art work as well as a quilt will be prepared at the Community Hall.

Three women who came together while studying as mature age students will mount an exhibition called Seechange. Their art builds on the rich tapestries of as they embrace challenges, let go and the plunge creating wearable clothing, paintings and installations often with recyclable materials.

Both Myponga and Yankalilla CWAs will display their craftwork for one day only (22 and 25 April respectively) At the Council &

Community Chambers in Normanville work celebrating our natural environment by members of the Embroiderers Guild of SA is likely to cause a lot of interest through out the festivities.

And for one day only, 23 April, a local group, Women with Fibre, will invite the public to Morrow’s Woolshed on the outskirts of Yankalilla for their weekly session working with fibre to create works of art. (the top photo shows Lil Hawker, Cilla Adler, Emanda Fretwell and Kaye Casey at work in this amazing space where they work on all sorts of fibres) At Second Valley, artists Sue Bean and Gaye Greenwood will be part of the Artists Trail; in Yankalilla Karen Hammat and Ruth Eisner will have their studios open and in Normanville Erika Inhofer and Ruth Trigg will be among the ten artists to be seen at work on the trail that proved so popular last festival.

Work of other women artists featuring in this festival will be by Barbara Robertson, Pat Hagen, Rolliver, Helen Jackson and Erika Ertl; as well, there will be several women exhibiting at Bungala House.

Grants to light the lantern project

Y

ankalilla artist Karen Hammat will now be able to fulfil her dream of having large lanterns nearly two metres tall as a central project for the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival. She has just received a $1500 grant from Country Arts SA to add to equivalent grants from Yankalilla Area School and from the Festival itself.

A number of community groups and individuals will work with Karen to produce paper and wire lanterns of indigenous shells. Visitors will see these in public processions and installed at festival events, and they will form a central part of the Festival’s Opening on April 20. The art will carry an environmental message to foster awareness of our fragile coast and the need to conserve coastal ecosystems.

Already various groups are arranging to be tutored by Karen to produce their own lantern.

Anyone wanting to book a workshop for a group of 5 to 8 people can contact Karen on 8558 2728.

There is wide community excitement about the project.

Comment from Val Gubbin; My work as the coordinator of the Yankalilla &District Senior Citizens Club tells me how much people in this community benefit from being involved in group activities and in creating art. This idea to have various groups, both formal and informal, and involving a range

of ages, will help bring different parts of the community together and stimulate interest in the activities of the festival.

Comment from Erika Inhofer; Co-owner of Studio 13: I think that this project will add significantly to the artistic content of the festival. It will also bring its important conservation message about our district which is so loved for its country and sea environments.

In addition, it will be a centre piece of the festival with lanterns placed at prominent locations and what a way to open the festival with a procession of lanterns as the sun is setting at the Links Lady Bay. Karen is a renowned artist in this district but also a person who gives much to the community. She is skilled at working with people to bring out their creativity and puts in many voluntary hours. Last festival she created a leafy sea dragon from nearly 4,000 thongs and this installation will appear again in the coming festival, displayed on a hillside.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB

D

espite the enthusiasm of members to go sailing over the summer, quite a few Sundays over January and February have seen uncooperative weather conditions.

Although member turnouts have been good, sailing was cancelled 5 weeks in a row due to conditions being too windy or not enough wind. On one occasion in January, when winds were marginal, members waited around for an hour or so hoping that they would abate but after no change, two intrepid sailors decided to give it a go.

Unfortunately, one of the two, Mary Bagshaw capsized several times and on the third occasion broke her leg in two places as she went over, and the rescue boat and rescue team were put to the test. Once ashore, the lifesavers lent a hand and Mary was taken to hospital by ambulance.

We wish Mary a speedy recovery and hope that she will be on deck again soon. All sport carries the risk of injury, and while it is unfortunate when it happens, the Club commitment to safety ensured that the outcome was not serious.

Some members have ventured out into the wider world of sailing, with a number attending the State and Nat i onal Cha mpi onshi ps i n Adelaide this season. Peter Nicholson represented the Club in his Mosquito at Christies Beach

between Christmas and the New Year and won the National Title.

Steve Keeley won the trophy handicap for Arafura Cadets at Henley Beach. Terry Quilliam won the National Arafura Cadet title and Rebecca Cooley was second. Also, Rex and Julie Gibbs were fourth in the National Stingray Titles at Long Jetty in NSW. A very commendable effort by all and while we are a small club, we have made our mark nationally.

The sailing season will continue every Sunday to the end of April, weather permitting.

While some members are players on the national scene, there is a broad range of experience ranging from expert to beginner, so if you are at all interested in sailing, you would be most welcome to join us for a trial spin, even if you have little or no experience. It’s a great sport and relatively inexpensive to get started.

If you’ve always had a yearning to give it a go, why not contact us and arrange a trial sail. You can contact either Steve Rogers on 8598 5244 or Stuart Gibbs on 8558 3399 and arrange to join us and meet the crew. We usually socialise after racing and have regular BBQ’s after sailing.

he Arts Network executive met in February, its second meeting since the AGM in October. Members now include Pageant Team, Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, Yankalilla Art and Music, and Women with Fibre. i Folks, well it’s the beginning of a new art year and it was good to see some of the old familiar faces again. I sincerely hope that everyone had a good New Year and is anxious to get the paintbrushes swishing again. We did, however, have a bit of an unfortunate start to our sessions due to our invited tutor having to cancel because she had injured herself and a replacement could not be found in time. But, never say die, our own Betty Gubbin, once again came to our rescue. She very kindly offered to teach our new and inexperienced members the rudiments of watercolour painting, an offer I greatly appreciated. To the delight of each member in her group, a completed, frame-worthy painting was taken home at the end of the session. The more experienced painters were able to work undisturbed on their own projects with pleasing results.

Where do we go from here? In March we have a Life Drawing session, April session will be cancelled due to the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, in May pastels with Jennifer Hockey and in June watercolour with Penelope Hallam. The rest of the year is sketched out (excuse the pun) but has yet to be confirmed.

Just a reminder: Meetings 1st Thursday of each month in the Supper Rooms of the Agricultural Hall from 10.00 a. m. to 4.00 p. m. Fee $10 per session.

I am pleased to announce that our member Pat Chibnall will be having her own display throughout the month of February. Doris Mitchell’s ‘Viva Variety ‘ exhibition will follow in March and April will see us in the excitement and flurry of the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival exhibition.

It’s almost like being in TV show-biz….but our pictures have taste and quality !

ankalilla Writers met for the first time this year @ Maureen Perry’s home on Feb 5th and Calling local Artist enjoyed the day trialling our extended hours from Yes it’s on again.

On 5th March we will again be at Normanville but WWF are abusing fibre like it’s going out of this time, enjoying Anna Rola’s beautiful garden.

ur speaker at the January meeting was Jessie Lathlean from the Dr Rose and Miss Daisy doll-making workshop in Port Elliott Jessie was a delightful lady, who obviously loved making dolls. Her talk began with a potted history of dolls and doll making. Paddle dolls from Ancient Egypt are carved from one piece of wood shaped like a paddle. They were religious figures. Germany became the centre of doll making from the 1600’s In the 1800’s French doll makers produced luxury dolls known as Parisiennes with a full wardrobe of clothes of the time, with accessories including combs, fans, furs and jewellery. Japan and America also made dolls. Over the years dolls have been made from a variety of material with plastic eyes and more expensive glass eyes, cutting out the eye socket is the hardest thing to do. Making a doll can take a long time. It can take up to 3 hrs at very high temperatures to fire a ceramic doll and this may need to be done four times, to allow the paint to dry each time Jessie said that dolls bring back memories to people and they also can reflect the time that they were made.

Jessie brought along some beautiful expensive dolls for our perusal. She also runs courses in doll making and her workshops are open for viewing on Saturday and Sunday mornings We wish to thank the Yankalilla Bowling Club for accommodating our meeting at very short notice Barbara Blacoe

Yankalilla Probus Club Yelta Cruise

n the 22nd January members of the Yankalilla Probus Clubs along with friends and relatives, gathered on the Port Adelaide Wharf, to embark on a long awaited trip on the Steam Tug Yelta.

The steel Tug was built in 1949 in Sydney, originally coal fired, she was converted to oil in 1957. Yelta was finally laid up in 1976 after 27 years service guiding vessels in and out of Port Adelaide. The SA Maritime Museum bought her in 1985, when she was restored and refitted by a group of enthusiastic volunteers. She is now a floating exhibit, manned by volunteers and can carry up to 6o passengers.

Once on board we were ‘greeted’ by two Port River Dolphins, they were the first of about 25 sightings of them.

The Tug had been stoked up some three days before as it takes approximately 18 hours to reach operating pressure in the 970 hp triple expansion steam engine. The journey along the river and beyond the breakwater was very smooth allowing passengers to move about freely, on our return journey we were joined by three dolphins that swam up and under the bow wave again and again, just like synchronised swimmers.

The children on board had the opportunity to ‘drive’ the tug and get a drivers certificate. Some were intrigued by the engine, taking many photographs.

The weather was perfect and everyone agreed that they had enjoyed the trip, which some of us followed up with dinner at a Port Adelaide Pub.

to chatter in the trees. Flowers in pots were unaware of their beauty, nodding in the cool breeze. Chimes clanged a variety of tones calming the thoughts and relaxing my tired bones. Such simple pleasures as I doze to the sound of cows mooing in the distance, feeling shadows creep over my skin as the sun disappears behind clouds. This is life.

New website and visitor guide for Fleurieu Peninsula

outh Australia’s centre of adventure, the Fleurieu Peninsula, is poised to capitalise on the growing number of tourists visiting South Australia after the launch of its new-look visitor guide and website on 24 January.

Both the guide and website are jam packed with new information to make it easier for local, interstate and international visitors to plan and book a holiday in the region than ever before.

The Fleurieu Peninsula is one of the State’s most popular holiday destinations and a clear favourite among Australians attracting more domestic tourists than any other South Australian tourism region, excluding Adelaide (12 months to September 2006).

International tourists are also lured by the region’s stunning scenery, close encounters with nature, brilliant coastline and world-class wine regions.

Fleurieu Peninsula Marketing Manager Roz Becker said the timing of the launch could not be more opportune, with visitor nights to South Australia up by 8% in the 12 months to September 2006 to 26.4 million.

“South Australia is attracting more tourists and with the new guide and website in place, the Fleurieu Peninsula has the holiday planning tools to ensure it stays on the must see and do list of visitors around the globe,” she says.

The 88-page guide and website will be launched by South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive Bill Spurr at the new Steam Exchange

Brewery in Goolwa. For the first time, the guide contains four competitions with holidays in the region offered as prizes while one competition will also be run online.

Other additions to the guide and website include: easier to access online bookings; new sections on surfing, diving and golf; revised maps; simple instructions on how to get to the region; town index; information on touring routes, new information on the Fleurieu Peninsula Arts Trail; revamped food and kids’ sections.

“The Fleurieu Peninsula is one of the most stunning regions of the state and a playground for adventure lovers with bushwalking along the Heysen Trail, kayaking, diving trips to the HMAS Hobart, surfing beaches, bike trails and fishing trips. For families there are rides on the coastal Cockle Train and Horse-Drawn Tram to Granite Island, Southern Right Whale and Little Penguin spotting, strawberry picking, adventure playgrounds, horse riding, and beach volleyball,” Ms Becker says.

“And to top it all off are about 60 cellar doors in some of Australia’s most famous wine regions such as McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, superb golf courses, weekend markets, fine cafes and restaurants, art galleries, and cruises along the waterways of the Coorong.”

QUILTING BEE - UNITING CHURCH, YANKALILLA th

n January 9 , 10 and 11 several local quilters gathered at the Sanders Hall, Uniting Church, Yankalilla to create quilts to be distributed to youngsters who are temporarily housed at Port Youth, Port Adelaide. This annual event was organised several years ago by Bronwen (Bronnie) Young. Now quilters come from all over the Fleurieu Peninsula and further to make these quilts. Over the 19 years that the group has been doing this, hundreds of quilts have been given to this worthwhile cause. For three days in January these ladies create a hive of industry, which at times resembles a very efficient assembly line as each lady goes about her appointed task. Some are busy cutting, assembling, pressing, others industriously quilting. Sewing machines, needles, scissors, hot irons, are all plied with enthusiasm and as much care is taken in choosing colour and patterns as would be for a quilt made for their own family or friends. All of the materials are donated, mostly by the quilters themselves, and the

resulting quilts are things both beautiful and useful. A special thank you must go to Riverlea Fabrics for the donation of some lovely fabrics. Also to the Yankalilla Uniting Church for the use of the hall for the three days.

Altruism is not the only reason for this gathering as much coffee and tea is drunk, biscuits and cakes disappear at morning and afternoon tea and of course the camaraderie is very important. A lot of talking is done, with an occasional joke shared. It is also a time to catch up with old friends as quite a number of quilters who have left the district return to join in the fun and companionship. So next year if you are in the district, and can thread a needle, come and join us. THREADS, the host group, meets at the Sanders Hall, Uniting Church, Yankalilla on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, starting from about 9.30am until after lunch. YANKALILLA BOWLING CLUB

he business end of the bowling season is fast approaching and both the ladies and men’s top teams are well in contention for top honours.

Going back to the three day January carnival this event was a huge success with well over 100 bowlers competing from clubs near and far on the Monday and Tuesday and 60 bowlers again on the Wednesday. The backbone of this organisation was John Stone who “encourages” other clubs to participate. He had some good assistants to help out as well Roger Wuttke and helpers behind the bar. Of course the ladies of the club, bowlers and non-bowlers did a magnificent job in feeding the multitude on each day with high quality food.

Well done to all the ladies who assisted and gave their time voluntarily. A few important dates to

eather and Ray Clarke were married in the Yankalilla Uniting Church 9 February 1957.

They have lived in the district all their lives and been members of various committees and clubs in the district nearly all that time.

They celebrated their anniversary with an open house at the R.S.L. Hall on February 11. Over 200 friends and family helped celebrate this momentous occasion.

Heather and Ray have 3 children and four grandchildren who would like to thank everyone for coming along and helping to make the day special.

AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS Held at historic Rapid Bay Friday 26th January 2007 The celebrations were opened by Yankalilla District Council CEO Roger Sweetman at 9.00a.m. at Rapid Bay. Acknowledgement of traditional landowners was given and a brief history of Australia and Rapid Bay was part of the address by District Council of Yankalilla Mayor, Peter Whitford.

Australian Citizenship awards were presented to Tina & Elaine by Roger Sweetman and of course, the National Anthem was sung by all.

The KESAB Awards were presented to the worthy recipients, congratulations to Myponga Primary School, Yankalilla District Council -

Council Works Program, Road Watch - Judith & Ian Uphill and Rapid Bay receiving a Meritorious Effort Award.

The Guest Speaker was Dr. Richard Willing, who was introduced by Mayor Whitford. Dr Willing discussed the history of South Australia and his own family, environmental and historical concerns and the loss of our native vegetation.

He also went on to explain his own efforts of environmental conservation on his own property.

The morning then moved on to the Australia Day Awards as listed; Australia Day Award - Community Event of the Year - Rapid Bay Primary School Australia Day Award - Young Citizen of the

Year - Liam Curtis Australia Day Award - Citizen of the Year Ron & Gladys Fielke for Community Involvement.

Mayor's Award - Services to the Community Dolly & Don Clark for their work within the Myponga Community.

In closing Roger Sweetman gave thanks to the Lions Club of Yankalilla for their support in supplying the BBQ breakfast that followed, thanks to council and everyone for attend.

SHEEPDOG TRIALS

he Sheepdog trials will again be held at the Yankalilla Showgrounds on March 4th & 5th. This year our major sponsor is FOX CREEK WINES, McLaren Vale. This trial, will with 4 other trials, in the State will offer competitors the chance of selection to compete in the Trans Tasman Cup being held in New Zealand this year. Last year we had 96 entries and we expect more this year. The competition will begin at about 8.30 am each day, have a lunch break, then finish late each day. As last year, the Lions club will be cooking, under the Marquee, an all day BBQ with Sausages, Bacon, Onions and Steak Sandwiches for sale at reasonable prices. There will also be soft drinks available. We also hope to have a variety of stalls available to the public. A Gold coin donation will be the entry fee to defray costs. We look forward to seeing you all at the presentation of prizes and drawing of the raffle at the close on Monday.

hey’re indispensable on farms across the nation and during March, you’ll be able to see sheep dogs in action on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Attracting teams from South Australia and Victoria, the Fox Creek Wines Fleurieu Peninsula Working Sheep Dog Trials will be held at Mount Compass on 1, 2 and 3 March, Yankalilla on 4 and 5 March and Strathalbyn on 24 and 25 March.

Making a special appearance at the Mount Compass event will be McLaren Vale’s Fox Creek Winery’s Shadow, a Border Collie who regularly “rounds up” tourists taking them on tours of the winery. Shadow is so popular he appears on the label of Fox Creek’s bottles of wines, has fans all over the world, is on firstname basis with loads of celebrities and regularly receives “marriage” proposals. Shadow will be at the Mount Compass twilight event on Friday 2 March, which also features “speed trials” – fast-paced action where the quickest dog wins.

Trial organiser Neil Heath says the trials involve Border Collies controlling three sheep, moving them through obstacles to test their skills and abilities. Crossbred sheep will be used at Mount Compass and Merinos at Yankalilla while a “field” trial will be held at Strathalbyn where dogs have to move 300 to 400 metres through a paddock to round up the sheep. Different challenges and activities will be held at different locations.

“Border Collies are incredibly talented and it’s amazing to see these animals in a working environment, showing off the skills they have learned and perfected over many hundreds of hours with their trainers,” Mr Heath says. “Whether you’re an

enthusiast or simply a dog lover, it’s a great day out for the whole family.”

A special preview at Mount Compass between 10am and noon on Thursday 1 March will give visitors an insight into the sheepdog trial world, allowing them to meet the trainers and dogs and see untrained puppies working using instinct alone. In the afternoon, they can watch some of the trials.

Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Marketing Manager Roz Becker said to make the most of the events, visitors should spend a few days in the region. “The Fleurieu Peninsula is one of the most stunning regions of the state and a playground for adventure lovers with bushwalking along the Heysen Trail, kayaking, diving trips to the HMAS Hobart, surfing beaches, bike trails and fishing trips. For families there are rides on the coastal Cockle Train and Horse-Drawn Tram to Granite Island, Southern Right Whale and Little Penguin spotting, strawberry picking, adventure playgrounds, horse riding, and beach volleyball,” Ms Becker says.

“And to top it all off are about 60 cellar doors in some of Australia’s most famous wine regions such as McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, superb golf courses, weekend markets, fine cafes and restaurants, art galleries, and cruises along the waterways of the Coorong.”

S.A. SEA RESCUE “WIRRINA FLOTILLA”

he Christmas holiday season is now well behind us, and it was once again fairly busy for the volunteers of the Wirrina flotilla. We attended to thirteen incidents between Christmas and the end of January, although it was not with out some drama.

Firstly, the big flood which all but destroyed the road into the Wirrina marina. The heavens opened up over Second Valley and Wirrina on the 19th of January dumping 70 to 90mm. of storm water over the area.

The creek which runs down into the Marina became a raging torrent washing away all in it’s path, including many hundreds of metres of roadway, leaving behind boulders tree stumps, fallen power poles and one hell of a damage bill which will run into hundreds of thousand dollars.

I managed to get in by 4wd just on day light to see if our facility was damaged, but thankfully the creek just entered our boat shed on the Southern end and did not

cause any damage, however the marina was some what of a mess with tons and tons of debris piled up against the pontoons. The Marina management and volunteers did a mighty job in removing so much rubbish.

Secondly, how many tow ins are enough? There is this chap that has now been towed in six times. Fare enough any body can have a spot of trouble and need some assistance and that is what we are all about, but six assists is something of a record and I think that this chap should have a very close look at his craft and his seamanship skills.

Thirdly, another matter came to our notice was the number of new boats being launched all fitted with VHF radio and the owners not having the required license to operate a marine VHF radio. The maximum fine for not having a license is something like $160,000 which is a lot of money in any ones language. Some of these new boat owners were horrified when they heard about this requirement. I am not having a go at these new owners they have not been informed by the boat salesmen that they have to have a license. There is nothing wrong with the radio fitted to their new craft and in some cases these are the same radios fitted to ocean going liners and hence the need to have a license to operate a VHF. This license requirement only relates to VHF and HF . (THERE IS NO LICENSE REQUIRED FOR A 27 MHZ RADIO.) I think that it is about time that some pressure is put on the boating industry to inform potential purchasers of this requirement.

The Sea Rescue Squadron will be running a course down at Wirrina in the next few weeks to enable boaties to obtain this license. Please contact any Sea Rescue member for details.

We had an interesting meeting with the Dept.

Transport, District Council of Yankalilla, local Police and members of Sea Rescue from Cape Jervis regarding the depth of the small boat marina at the cape. Watch this article for future developments. I have a feeling something is about to happen.

At Christmas cove on Kangaroo Island there is a first class facility for the small boat owners, and where the trip to K.I. starts from, Cape Jervis, leaves a lot to be desired. Lets hope that conditions at the Cape end can soon be upgraded to make this a much safer place to work. I am afraid that if there was a major incident at the Cape at low tide, rescue groups such as ours would have huge problems to contend with in its present state. We were extremely lucky on the 31st of July 2005 when seventeen rescue boats were launched to conduct a search for two missing paddlers who were over-due trying to cross Back Stairs Passage that there was a reasonable tide and no rocks were exposed. This search ended in tragedy and two lives were lost. It is marvelous how these incidents always happen at night.

Cape Jervis handles more passengers than any other Port in S.A. and I think for safety sake the small boat facility should be upgraded asap.

e c yc l e yo u r M O B I LE PHONES – the Catchment Resource Centre is an official drop off point for the Mobile Muster – a national program for the recycling of used mobile phones and their accessories. Drop your old mobile phones, mobile phone batteries and accessories in to the centre. Mobile phone components are sorted and recycled to make new products such as batteries, fence posts, jewellery, plastic pallets and stainless steel. The Centre, located at 3/50 Main Road, Normanville is open Monday to Friday 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.

Forthcoming events - The resource centre will once again be taking part in the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival. During Festival week we will be showing short films about marine life and, in addition, on the Saturday we will host a number of activities with a Marine theme for young people under our marquee.

Drop in and pick up a Diver’s Information Pack, relax with a cup of coffee and watch a short film or help your children learn more about our Marine environment.

2006 Rainfall – Each year the Resource Centre collates official rainfall data collected from the Yankalilla Post Office. Last year’s total rainfall from this location was 366.6 mm. This represents the fourth lowest annual rainfall reading since data collection began in 1893 and a total annual rainfall considerably below the annual average of 577 mm over the last 114 years. Average annual rainfall between the years 1893 and 1949 was 584 mm and between 1950 to 2006 was 570 mm. The Normanville Catchment Resource Centre has produced a graph comparing monthly rainfall from 2000 to 2006 – copies of this graph are available free of charge from the Centre – drop in and collect a

copy. Thank you to the Yankalilla Post Office for making the rainfall data available to us and to Centre volunteer Bob for collating the data and producing our rainfall graphs.

New Resources: Some of you will recall an excellent brochure entitled Garden Plants Gone Bush containing information on common garden plants escaping into open space or native bushland and becoming weeds, smothering or out-competing native plants and drastically changing the make up and natural balance of our remnant bushland areas. This brochure has been out of print for some time and has just been updated and reprinted under the new name of Environmental Weeds Are Choking Out Native Plants. The brochure provides an overview of some of the key grasses, trees, herbs, bulbs and corms, shrubs and climbers and creepers which continue to be used as garden plants and which have become significant environmental weeds in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region (which includes the Fleurieu Peninsula).

oreshore Food Caravan’s new owners are requesting permission to use tables, seats and umbrellas. The Foreshore caravan has changed ownership and is no longer owned by the Rotary Club, a charity. On Thursday the 15th of February, Council is discussing this request.

Concerned ratepayers are questioning council’s comment that their by-laws state that community consultation is not necessary on this matter.

ear readers, as our inaugural year begins I would like you to understand why this association was formed and the ways you can participate and/or use this association to benefit your lifestyle and well being. This can be done by being involved as part of the community push to be more vocal and proactive in the everyday use of our rate money in the improvement of our district. By learning some of the aspects of Local Government its rules and regulations which govern the way our elected, local government members (counsellors) debate and use these finances in the betterment of our lives.

It would be remiss of me not to point out the intentions of creating new and expensive premises, when a perfectly good council chamber already exits. Mind you these present chambers without proper consultation have already been altered and the main chamber turned into offices, I suppose so that every one employed can have there own office. This hardly being a reasonable way to use our hard earned money. A way to have your opinion’s heard are twofold; firstly, speak to the people on your own bat, or be part of people power and speak through the community mouth piece our organisation.

Another valid point is the rise of allowances by over 100%. After having spoken to some counsellors it appears that they feel that there losses to there business venture’s need to be part of the allowance scheme. Now apparently according to their own regulations, business losses due to council duties are not to be taken into account when adjusting their allowance base rates. Mind you every one of these people spoke most vehemently against the overspending of the local council prior to the elections. I wonder did these people have a memory loss straight after being elected. It is also to be noted that less than approximately 15 years ago the councillors did not get any

allowances, but thought these duties to be a privilege and social responsibility.

Local transport has been a contentious issue for a long time now, and is in need of a thorough and positive debate, not just by council but the community at large. At a recent council FOCUS group the top priority issue turned out to be again, the Public Transport issue, but when it gets a council priority which will be done in council, where will transport be allocated. The greater part of our population is the elderly and a large amount of these people I believe would use such a system. A group of people which meet under the flag of the Minister for MAYO, Alexander Downer, calling themselves The Southern Fleurieu Seniors Council, at there very first meeting brought the problem of local transport into focus and saw a need to debate the subject and create some answer to this complex issue.

I don’t acknowledge that I am very knowledgeable on rates and how they are worked out and the allocation to different area’s etc. There is a way to assess some value’s and the amount that should be paid, which is by checking these against similar council area’s and see if they are comparable. Now I myself have family members living in all sort’s of council area’s all over the country and there seems to be a large variance in ours to there’s. The issue is why we don’t know how rates are formulated and distributed, and when is local government about to fill us in with this apparently most secret affair.

One day I was in a rather stimulating discussion with a customer trying to explain why something could not be done, I lost the argument. My superior took me to one side and told me quiet sternly that the customer was always right even when they were wrong.

Very confused I worked out that by compassion for and a little understanding of the customers problems even if

what the customer wanted was not available there is always compromise, made to look like he was right in the first place. This takes caring people and a knowledge that the customer’s money keeps me in wages. Councils throughout the country I believe need to return to the drawing board and learn anew who pays their wages and supplies their jobs.

This next paragraph is extremely short and goes like this; “why cant we get digital television reception” It is getting quiet boring asking the same question and getting the same boring answers which are hard to understand and never seem to solve the problem.

Community consultation to me is a clear and concise interpretation of the information at hand. From personal experience the sort of consultation I have received has at many times been vague, and a little mysterious, with tinges of extremely impossible consequences to them.

Now what good is this sort of uninspired and non information going to do to the relationship between the council and its community, I believe it will eventually destroy it and could result in community revolt, something that no-one wants. It behoves this council to be clear, concise and communicate with the people in such a way that it knows full well that every person gets to know the information.

So in conclusion I think I need only say, be at our next meeting, which will be held at the Senior Citizens Complex at 7.00pm on the 7th March 2007. We have been having a busy Summer at the horse and pony club. January was our Summer Camp at the grounds. We were lucky enough to have the expert instruction of Wendy Hunt and Glenys Hayman and our usual Denise Dawson; Sally George; Yvonne Gallagher and Ryan Fletcher worked tirelessly throughout. Our members were kept completely on their toes with full-on activities throughout three days. Great effort for a successful camp for all those involved. Welcome new members Jackie, Holly and Nicky.

February Rally was a hot one! Denise and Ryan instructed our small contingents of riders til 1100.

Mountain Pony club joined us for lunch after their members did a beach ride. They certainly enjoyed that. Welcome to new members Sian, Tomeka, and Mandy.

March Rally will be held on the 11th - put back a week to make way for Sheepdog Trials. Yvonne, Tracy and Sally will be coordinating that one.

he kidneys are remarkable, important organs. Their general functions include excretion of waste products, maintenance of homeostasis and hormone secretion. They are precision instruments of filtration. They excrete waste products such as nitrogenous end products of metabolism and various complex convoluted tubule system of the kidneys after being initially filtered out of the blood stream.

Minerals are excreted and reabsorbed according to the body’s need for them. The kidneys maintain homeostasis by filtering a lot of water and molecules and then reabsorbing the appropriate amounts of some and secreting others. Water balance is a critical part of ensuing that the cellular function of the body can continue. Sodium holds water with it and it is reabsorbed to maintain the water content of the body. In maintaining water balance, the intake of water must equal the output. Intake includes drinking water, water in food and water derived from metabolism. Death from dehydration may be caused by circulatory failure due to reduced blood volume, a rapid rise in body temperature when the environment is hot, disturbed cellular functions and eventually inadequate perfusion and failure of the kidneys, heart and central nervous system. The kidneys regulate ph/acidbase balance by controlling the excretion of hydrogen ions. Acids are added to the body by cellular metabolism, breakdown of dietary protein and other metabolites. The excess acid has to be excreted or changed into a different compound. By intricate means, the kidneys can offset the acidity of the blood and create acidic urine. The kidneys regulate osmotic pressure, which is the amount of “pull” the blood exerts to keep water within the blood vessels. This is achieved by plasma proteins and solutes. When these are diluted in the blood stream, the kidneys respond by excreting more water to try to concentrate the blood. High osmotic pressure in the blood stimulates conservation of water from the urine, resulting in less urine.

Electrolyte levels are controlled by the kidneys.

For instance when there is low pressure in the blood being filtered by the kidneys, sodium reabsorption is increased and sodium excretion is decreased, retaining more water within the body. The kidneys also have a function in vitamin D and calcium homeostasis. They convert vitamin D into an active form and this then promotes reabsorption of calcium. The kidneys secret hormones, which influence blood pressure and promote red blood cell production in the bone marrow. The many diverse functions of the kidneys help to ensure smooth functioning of the whole body. There are numerous causes of kidney failure in cats and dogs and various tests available to assess their function. There are also treatments, which assist the kidneys to control blood pressure by either conserving more water or excreting more water. There are prescription diets available which ease the burden of filtration of metabolic by-product from the blood stream. The

EMBRYO TECHNICIAN WINS AUSTRALIA-CANADA YOUTH FELLOWSHIP

2-year-old embryo technician, Amy Stringer, has been named winner of the 2007 Australia-Canada Youth Fellowship, a prestigious award that gives young achievers the opportunity to spend up to three months in Canada gaining valuable industry experience.

Co-sponsored by the Victorian Branch of Holstein Australia and leading artificial breeding organisation, Semex Pty Ltd, the award was announced at International Dairy Week in Tatura, Victoria, recently. Amy grew up on Sharon Holsteins) at “Talamara”, Parawa, South Australia, where her parents, Jeff and Gail Stringer, share-milked 200 Holsteins. Her interest in dairy genetics was sparked after she finished high school, when she worked at Bartons Daraway Jerseys and then Joyley Putland’s Holsteins at Parawa. She graduated with a Bachelor of Agriculture degree from the University of Adelaide's Roseworthy campus, where she became involved with the Semex Elite Heifer Program. "At the time, Roseworthy was importing embryos and putting them into recipient cows run on the campus farm," she said. "We'd calve them down and they'd send the bulls for progeny testing and we'd sell the

heifers." Amy has worked for Total Livestock Genetics in Camperdown, Victoria, for the past year. As well as managing the company's on-site embryo transfer program, she travels with the company's mobile embryo transfer team, processing embryos after collection. Total Livestock Genetics is an independent, exportaccredited semen and embryo collection facility.

The company is a leader in the provision of advanced breeding technologies, including IVF, embryo sexing and embryo splitting. Amy said the Australia-Canada Youth Fellowship was an "awesome" opportunity to learn about the intensive dairy farming systems in Canada. "I'd also like to spend a couple of weeks doing some embryo work with Semex Alliance, as well as attend the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin," she said. Amy has one cow in her Bluejay Holsteins herd, Roseworthy Silky Angela, a daughter of Semex sire, Silky Gibson.

Angela is in calf to another Semex sire, Summershade Igniter. Her ultimate goal is to own her own farm and to develop her own registered Holstein herd. "That's a long-term dream because of land prices, so at the moment I'm taking one day at a time," she said. "In the meantime, I am continuing to learn more about embryo transfer collection and processing at Total Livestock Genetics, which will be a stepup in my career." Semex pty Ltd General Manager, Jim Conroy, said the company was delighted to sponsor the Youth Fellowship. "We all have a responsibility to foster interest in the breeding industry amongst youth and to make opportunities available to them," he said. "While there are no formal selection criteria, other than applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age and working in the Victorian dairy industry, the organisers are looking for enthusiasm, commitment and maturity. "Amy was selected from a field of four outstanding finalists and we are confident that like previous winners, she will be a fine ambassador for the Australian dairy industry." COSSIES, SWIMSUITS, TOGS AND BIKINIS

ll depending from whence one comes, the outfit worn for recreational bathing and swimming comes under the mantle of many titles as included above.

If one looks back to our own childhood, and then compares the outfits of today, fashions certainly have changed, certainly noticeable is the reduced amount of material used.

Actually, the very first two piece (not bikinis) bathing suits date back to the about 1400BC as ancient urns and paintings depict.

In the 1920’s era, there was a shocked response at the sight of all revealing figure hugging suits revealing the body limbs as never seen before.

The young women, free from long skirts wore a wool jersey sleeveless tank suit, very similar to the male costumes of an earlier era. The suit legs stopped at a point mid thigh and beneath the suit legs were built-in shorts. These newer suits were often patterned in abstract designs or stripes, those with poorer figures covered themselves with wraps.

To accompany these new fashioned suits, a bathing cap suited to bobbed hair and not unlike the cloche hat of the period.

At the end of the 1920’s, white and black cotton swim costumes with white rubber belts were the vogue until the 1930’s when cotton printed suits with little over skirts to cover the thighs replaced the ugly 1920 fashion.

Some may recall famous Hollywood identities such as Esther Williams and Dorothy Lamour wearing figure hugging costumes with higher cut legs revealing every body contour in their synchronised swimming film roles.

I recall as a child going to the cinema and watching with envy these stars in their colourful swimsuits as they slid and glided through the water with so much effortless ease.

We then come into the 1940-1960’s era and the corsetry fashion industry was waning. However, manufacturers saw an opportunity for those women who needed a suit that would hide any body faults. This new adaptation of the corset was ideal for designers to add stretch tummy panels to control and hold the stomach in, this in turn prompted the use of bra cups and support boning to give support where needed.

Although a designer named Louis Reard invented the bikini in 1946, considered risqué and thought to be best suited to film start and strippers, the all in one swimsuit was still worn by women. However, the fabric was changed and, for a time lined cotton, stretch lastex and elastic ruched waffle nylon was popular. Zips were still used to retain the corset like appearance in the early 60’s.

As well this era included a type of apron hiding the separate matching fabric crutch, this not lasting for long being considered old fashioned.

By the mid 1960’s fabrics were mostly nylon or Lycra or, a mix of the two. The main feature in favour of this was the stretch factor, being able to pull on and up like a pair of panties. By the late sixties, these swimsuits had revealing side or cut out mesh net panels filled in with see through plastic rings.

During this era and onwards, the one piece swimsuit kept its popularity for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, women felt more comfortable in a one piece costume, either for beach wearing only and not necessarily for swimming in or, found it excellent for both. Nearly all figure types looked much better with the cut and line of this fashion.

Apart from the slim line appearance, swimsuits became available with a wide range of bra cup sizes.

No matter that a woman was flat chested, an in-built bra gave an impression of a well formed pair of mammary glands. The one piece swimsuit certainly catered for all types of figures.

There were various designs, some popular and others not so popular. There was a two piece costume that had fairly brief but, respectable shorts and bra top size that lasted about one season only.\ Then there was the one piece with an overlay that hung from the top of the bra section, definitely not for all figures, especially when marketed in bright florals, spots and animal prints, such as leopard and tiger.

In those beach beauty parades of many years ago, these bathing beauties would line up and, to be fair in the judging making the competition equal to all entrants, all wore identical one-piece suits and high heel shoes.

When first introduced, the bikini was regarded without much enthusiasm in the swimsuit manufacturing industry.

However, these costumes gained popularity while at the same time becoming more skimpier than ever.

The initial impact of the bikini’s appearance paled into insignificance when the g-string suit and the thong (also called the Brazilian tanga) made their debut after

being worn and popularised in Europe and America.

These were so brief and revealing that they frequently exposed both cheeks of the bottom, so brief in fact that women resorted to covering up with oversized shirts, t-shirts or sarongs – only being removed for that important sunbathing of course!

With this 1980-1990 fashion among the young, came the explosion of pubic waxing and sun tanning products.

A recent swimwear innovation from the 1990’s is the tan through fabrics allowing one to protect the body from the sun’s harsh rays as well as acquiring the much sought after tan.

For the person who is not a frequent beach goer, is not a lover of water (for recreation beach or pool purposes that is) it seems logical that if one is really hot and, desperate to dip the toes or, be recklessly impetuous to immerse the entire body, then just strip down to underpants and go for it.

After all, some underclothes are no more daring or provocative than the swimwear being marketed and manufactured at ridiculous prices. There is nothing more comfortable than wearing a pair of briefs, t-shirt with no inhibiting bra to have that cooling off in the ocean or pool. Just think of that wet t-shirt look!

Anything is fashionable nowadays, and there is an old saying that goes something like “necessity is the mother of invention”!

I will continue to either stay indoors when it is hot, or in a sheltered place, sun protected and watch others swim or sunbathe, regardless of what the sun is doing to their bodies and skin ignoring the insidious dangers of cancer.

Why I refuse to play Bowls

remember an introductory lesson to the bowling game. Afterwards I said, ‘Sorry, bowls is not for me.’

I like games that are fair – where your good efforts are secure. That’s why you’ll never see me in a pair of creams lining up a bowl and doing that low crouched half run before letting it go and then trying to steer it in with an extended hand like a mental robot.

What is it about bowls that I don’t like? It’s this: If I send down a bowl and get it whisker close to the kitty another player then, can knock it right off the green - I can’t hack that.

You can have your bowls and I’ll stay with fishing.

I have to say however, that bowling can be a bit like living. You can be doing well and think you’ve made it then suddenly, it all changes – you’re knocked right out of the game. Our position can be dramatically altered by such things as bush fires, road accidents, drowning, ill health, a broken relationship, disappointments and setbacks. We don’t know what’s coming next or how we’ll be affected.

the moon represents his followers aggregated together who are to reflect his light to others upon earth during the long night of his absence. This is why the moon is described as a ‘faithful witness in the heaven’ in Psalm 89:37 because its shining testifies to a world of spiritual darkness of the sun’s (Christ’s) existence and guaranteed appearance at dawn. Refer again to Malachi 4:2 for the excellent manner in which this analogy is used.

The symbology of the moon is also used to describe false State religious systems deriving their power from State governments. (sun) Let me give you an example so that you can readily see what I am saying. In Isaiah 13:10 we read these words: “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in its going forth and the moon shall not cause her light to shine” When you examine the context of the chapter you find that it is forecasting the Babylonian Empires overthrow by the MedoPersian Empire and therefore both the King (sun – the chief ruler in the political heavens) the stars (the statesmen) and the moon (the religious system of Babylon) would be eclipsed i.e. Both the civil and religious systems would be toppled. It is the same in Ezekiel 32:7 , where the Egyptian religious systems would be toppled by a Babylonian invasion described as - ‘and the moon shall not give her light’ Notice how the moon is always described in the female gender. I will explain why in a moment.

The overthrow of the Jewish Temple and priesthood by the Babylonians and then the Romans later in AD 70 was prophesied of in like terms. In Joel 2:10 we read in reference to these terrible events “the earth (the people) shall quake before them (the Romans); the heavens (the political rulers in Israel) shall tremble; the sun (their King) and the moon (their priesthood) shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.” The Lord Jesus picked up these words from Joel’s prophecy and warned his disciples as to the terrible events to occur in Jerusalem when the 2nd Temple would be destroyed by the Romans and the priesthood (moon) “shall not give her light” Matthew 24:29 I said that the moon is always in the female gender.

The reason for this is that the true followers of Jesus Christ are described in the feminine as his bride. The Bride of Christ is described in the Song of Solomon 6:10 as being “fair as the moon” i.e.

Reflecting the qualities of her groom. They are described as a “kingdom of priests’ in Revelation 5:9-10 i.e. a religious system that will help superintend his kingdom upon earth when he returns. To do this of course he will have to displace the current counterfeit systems and this is described in Isaiah 24:23, Joel 3:15 just to reference a couple of places where their demise is recorded.

The false priesthoods of today will be replaced the sun (Jesus Christ) and the moon (the saints) as jointly they shine in the political heavens for 1000 years (Habakkuk 3:11 and Isaiah 60:19-20) Together they will provide spiritual guidance and light for all mankind. haven’t introduced myself. I am Chris St. John, the new priest at Christ Church, Yankalilla. I live in Port Elliot with my wife Roz where we have been for just over a year. I write in the ‘Yankalilla News’ every month. Recently, I find I have been taking myself out to my study to listen to music and to let it have a special effect on me.

Have you ever listened to a voice or a piece of music that has taken you away to some other place or made your spirit soar? When I heard Eva Cassidy sing ‘Fields of Gold’, her voice sent shivers through me and lifted my spirits. As I write, I am listening to music by Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Consort—soaring saxophone and four male voices. It has the power to take me to another place.

Music can play a very important role in our lives. I had some very happy times in Wangaratta where I sang with a small group as we entertained the elderly and residents of hospitals and nursing homes. I found, too, that it was part of my ministry, being able to share something of myself with others.

John Cage wrote of music, ‘Music is edifying, for from time to time it sets the soul in operation’. I’m sure many of you will know what he means.

Singing together in a full church, hearing a good choir or a special piece of music can set our soul in motion and it reaches out to another place.

Joseph Addison, in his poem, ‘A Song for St. Cecilia's Day', said, ‘Music, the greatest good that mortals know and all of heaven we have below’. I agree with him, but it would hesitate to include much of what passes as modern music in his quotation. It certainly doesn’t suggest ‘heaven’ to me—quite the opposite in fact—but then I am of the older generation!

We all need to be able to find a retreat in our daily lives. We can’t take ourselves off to a monastery.

Some find it hard to escape their routines. But music can be a place of retreat for us. It can fill in the short empty spaces of our lives. With music, we can leave behind some of our stresses; we can find peace and be restored even for a moment or two. I know that I can retreat into another world that speaks of beauty, peace, concord, love and hope every time I put on certain music.

We should not be surprised that people have written so powerfully about music and its connection to heaven. After all, we believe that the inspiration and gift to write and play music is given by God and it is his Holy Spirit that gives us voice as we raise our songs of praise to him.

So go on, find ‘your’ piece of music and just sit and let it wash over you. Let it be your escape from the pressures of your world. Soar with it to some heavenly space and find some peace. All of us need to take ourselves to what Jesus called, ‘A quiet place apart’. Such places were, for Jesus, places of restoration and places where He could be close to God. Let those places do the same for you.

s I write this piece, I am, like many of you, recovering from Christmas. We have shared, once again, in the other-worldly story of the birth of Jesus. We heard the stories of angels appearing to Zechariah, Mary and Joseph, and the shepherds on the cold hillside outside Bethlehem. Later we will hear the story of the three wise men, or Magi, who have a dream and follow a star that leads them to Jesus. The whole Christmas story can take on a fairy-tale character if we are not careful, and we can come to believe that Mary, Joseph and

Jesus represent the ‘perfect family’.

But, as the Negro Spiritual says, “It ain’t necessarily so”.

When we look at the Christmas story in it’s entirety we find hard facts and realities of life intruding into this almost ‘fairy-tale’ story. Mary’s “yes’ to God’s messenger, Gabriel, raises threatening issues and the possibility of death. The Holy Family is rejected in Bethlehem when there is no room at the inn, and they are forced to bring Jesus into the world in a place where animals are housed. Later we hear of the massacre of the innocent male babes of Bethlehem because Herod thinks this new King will be a threat to him.

Finally, this Holy Family has to flee for their lives to avoid the clutches of Herod. They escape to Egypt in a journey of 400 kilometres.

On the Sunday after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. This year we hear the story of Jesus being found to be missing when the family was returning from the feast of the Passover. A twelve year old boy went missing only to be found, after much searching and worrying, in the Temple of Jerusalem speaking to the rabbis. No one in their right mind can suggest that the Holy Family lived a sheltered and troublefree existence. This was no ‘perfect’ family, as those who seek for perfection would expect. Our families imitate the Holy Family. Just like them, our families are visited by sorrows, misunderstandings, and problems of one kind or another. The Holy Family can serve as a model for us.

I don’t believe that there is such a thing as a perfect family. Every family goes through rough times. Every family has, from time to time, to make sacrifices. Our imperfections create imperfections in our families. What is important for all of us is how we deal with our problems and conflicts. Looking at the Holy Family we see strength. We see faithfulness, humility, and courage in Mary and Joseph as they faced their problems. We know there has to be that thing called ‘tough love’—that love where you love the person but not their errant actions. And we are told that, despite the considerable setbacks, Jesus flourished.

Don’t expect ‘perfection’ in your family—it’s an impossible dream. But do be faithful, do be consistent; be courageous and courteous; but above all be open and loving, recognising that each family members is a child of God who deserves respect. Model yourselves on Mary and Joseph, and Jesus and remember that whatever you do to one another, you do to God! Fr. Chris St. John Christ Church

Rescue pilot to speak at Inman Valley

I

nman Valley Uniting Church is looking forward to a visit by Alf Jonas, the man who led the rescue squadron on a dangerous mission to rescue Thiery Debois and Tony Bullimore.

In the early hours of 6 January 1997, two lone around-the-world yatchsmen were in major distress 1400 nm South of Perth in some of the most hostile and formidable seas imaginable. While most South Australians were still relaxing on their Christmas holidays, five Orion crews from RAAF Base Edinburgh were summonsed to work to perform a dangerous yet exciting task - a Search and Rescue in the Southern Ocean of Messrs Dubois and Bullimore.

As the Executive Officer of No. 10 Squadron, Alf Jonas became intimately involved with the

Southern Ocean Rescue. Alf not only helped organise the crews for the rescue, but as most of the aircrew were still on leave, he ended up flying himself and a composite crew to Perth to assist in the search!

After a five year stint flying the 34 seat SAAB 340 airliner with ‘Rex’ Airlines, Squadron Leader Alf Jonas recently rejoined the RAAF as an experimental test pilot with Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU). He is a Captain on the RAAF AP-3C Orion and Pilatus PC9/A aircraft, and a Supervisory Check Captain on the B200 King Air. Alf also works part-time with the Flinders University’s Airborne Research Australia high atmospheric research arm as the Chief Pilot and flies the unique Grob Egrett capable of flying up to

Free Meningococcal C Vaccinations

M

eningococcal disease is an uncommon life threatening infection caused by bacteria that live in the throat or nose in about 10% of people at any given time.

Most people carrying the bacteria are well but can pass on the bacteria to others.

The bacteria are spread through coughing and sneezing however many hours of close contact is usually required, as the bacteria do not survive outside the body.

The onset of the disease is rapid and can lead to both brain infection and/or blood poisoning and is more common in young children.

Type B and C Meningococcal

disease are more common in Australia and Meningococcal C accounts for more than half of all Meningococcal deaths.

The Meningococcal C vaccine is given to children at one year of age as part of their routine immunisations.

School age children have also been offered this immunisation as part of a national catch up program which is due to end this year Free Meningococcal C vaccine will be available until June 2007 for school age children (5 to 18years of age) or anyone born on or after the 1st of January 1984.

Alf graduated from the United States Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) in 1987 as a Qualified Experimental Test Pilot (QTP) and has accumulated over 8,500 hours (that’s almost one year in the air) on 55 different aircraft types.

Alf, originally from Perth WA, is married to Adelaide born, Bronwen. They have three children Lauren (15), Natalie (12) and Isaac (10). His interests include: Family/ Church Activities, Self Education (Reading), Snow/Water Skiing, IceSkating, Aussie Rules & Cooking.

SOUTH COAST CARER SUPPORT

he New Year started well for Carers with an all-day bus trip that included a visit to a peacock farm for morning tea, lunch at the blueberry farm and ended with a visit to a winery for wine and cheese tastings. Carers reported that they had a most enjoyable day with lots of fun and laughter thrown in. On behalf of the Carers we should like to extend our thanks to Kay for, once again, organising a great day out.

The Normanville Hotel was the venue for some planning by a group of Carers. With the Retreat programmes about to commence some final input was required from Carers.

Last Saturday saw 30+ Carers and Friends attending the ‘Symphony under the Stars’ in Adelaide. What a great evening. The weather was beautiful and the choice of music was excellent. Everyone thought the 1812 Overture, with fireworks, certainly was the highlight of the evening. An extra big thank you is extended to Janis, Marion and Barry for reserving an ideal position in the park from 1 pm!

A few changes have taken place with this year’s programs compiled for Carers. The Cuppa, Chat & Busy Bee will now be held on alternate Fridays, commencing 9 February. Volunteers are wanted to help out with small jobs, i.e. fill heat

bags with wheat, cut out fabric for door stoppers, etc. Any help will be much appreciated and enjoy a cuppa and a few laughs for free. Bonnie will also be available to pamper with a facial, for a modest cost.

Changing Lanes is a new program. Are you a past Carer? Do you sometimes find it difficult adjusting to a life without the role of carer? Do you sometimes feel isolated and lonely? Could you do with a hand linking back into the community, learning new skills or reclaiming and rebuilding social networks? Training is at 6.45pm on Tues & Thurs at Yankalilla Oval with some Adelaide based players training on Tuesdays at 6.45pm at Seacliff Beach (near the Yacht Club) with David’s father Dennis supervising.
