What at busy month it has been.

The Rodeo was once again held at the Yankalilla Showgrounds, much to the disgust of some and to the enjoyment of many.

The Tour Down Under came to Yankalilla in the middle of a heat wave, but was still well supported. It cost about $15,000 for Yankalilla Council to host the finish line honours. It also cost a lot more in road rebuilding and maintenance, pruning the trees, re-painting the lines on the roads, cleaning the streets, replacing damaged signs and more. Maybe we should have the finish line every year, then at least once a year there would be a total makeover of our lovely little area.

Yankalilla looks like having a bit of a building boom in shops and offices, if the rumours are true. The Visitor Information Centre may even be on the move! Watch and see.

The Queens baton also had a flying visit to Yankalilla during February on its way to Melbourne for the Commonwealth Games.

The Crows paid the area a visit too, with a trip to the Yankalilla Area School, the Yankalilla Centre and held a training session on the Yankalilla Oval.

Coming up this weekend is the Sheep Dog Trials at the Yankalilla Show Grounds.

OMG, is there an election happening soon, or what!? There is enough political crap flying around to fertilise the Simpson Dessert. But seriously, get down to the polling booth on March 18th and make your vote count. What about changing your voting habits and making this seat a ‘marginal seat’ then there would be a rapid change in political climate and money would flow endlessly into the Southern Fleurieu, to try and get our votes! The Jetty would be fixed, the roads would be dual lane and the TV reception would improve too or maybe not! Or are we just dreaming. Maybe we shouldn’t write editorials at 2.30am.

Hmmm!

ealth Minister John Hill presented Long Service Medals to 11 country doctors who have worked for 30 years in rural and remote South Australia. The presentations were made at the “Celebrating Rural Medical Practice” dinner hosted by the

Rural Doctors Workforce Agency at the Hyatt Regency Adelaide on Saturday 11th February.

Minister Hill said the doctors’ 30 years of service was an exceptional contribution to regional South Australia.

“Country doctors have such an important role in their local district, not just at the local hospital and consulting rooms, but as a valued member of the community,” he said.

“The doctors being honoured tonight have dedicated their working live to serve their communities and it is fantastic they will be recognised in front of their peers.”

Our own Doctor Lyn Gardener was one of 11 GPs who received this prestigious award and is a wonderful role model for younger doctors. It was noted that doctors such as Lyn Garner are and inspiration for our newer doctors

NORMANVILLE NEW YEARS EVE PAGEANT CHRISTMAS RAFFLE RESULTS Congratulations to the winners of our Christmas Raffle, 1st prize Betty Gubbin of Normanville and 2nd prize to Howard Perry of Aldinga Beach, thanks to all who supported us.

COSTUMES – Can you sew; do you have some spare time on your hands? The Pageant Team are always looking for people who would like to donate some of their time and skills to create, repair & construct costumes. We have heaps of materials and fur ready to go.

EASTER BINGO – Our Easter Bingo will be held on Sunday 26th March at the Yankalilla Golf

Club. Bar open, afternoon tea supplied, raffle on the day. This is a fun afternoon, why not bring along some friends and spend the afternoon supporting your local Pageant. Phone Sharon on 8558 4069 to book a table.

BREAK IN - On Saturday January 14th Yankalilla Trading Store was broken into and the Pageant had quite a few costumes and wigs stolen.

Among the costumes stolen were Cleopatra, ½ man ½ woman, hippie, mermaids, feather boa’s & feather cape, assorted decorated full leotards and several wigs including a long curly red Nicole Kidman wig & Cleopatra’s black fringed wig.

All of this is very identifiable as we made most of it ourselves.

Also stolen was jewellery, laser cut bumper stickers, CD players, glow gear and a small amount of

coin. The Pageant Team consists of 5 or 6 people who work really hard to put on a fantastic community event and to have a break in and lose stock is a real set back, if anyone has seen any of the above or have any information regarding the loss of these goods please contact the local Police Station.

re-season training for season 2006 has commenced in earnest but PLAYERS – WHERE ARE YOU??

At this stage our two (2) new coaches are disappointed with the attendance. Remember our first trial game is on 18th March and we must be fully fit for this and all games following.

Major Lottery In lieu of the past Player Auction, the Club will run a major lottery to be known as the President’s Lottery 2006. (This lottery is fully licensed).

1st prize will be $7000, 2nd $2000, 3rd - $1000 with 18 draws of $100 each (drawn each

week of season in Sporting Club).

Final major draw will be held at a function at the Sporting Club on Sat 26th August at 8.30pm after the last game in the minor round.

250 tickets are available at $100 each. Why not form a syndicate now, as they will be in short supply. See Peter Hamlyn or any other Football Club Committee member from Monday 20th February.

Catering Friday night teas are still happening with Colts parents and friends providing the volunteer staff. Remember all profits are to the Colts. Bar is open from 5.00 pm for the Happy Hour.

Blue Gum Forestry - “its time to review the impact on our communities” - McHugh ccording to The Nationals independent candidate for Finniss Kym McHugh, “it’s time to re-view the impact on our communities of the increasing pine and blue gum forestry taking place on both Kangaroo Island and on the Southern Fleurieu.”

“Whilst recognising the positive economic contribution forestry makes to our state, I am very concerned at the displacement of our farming community, and the loss of some of our most productive farming land to forestry. Having a life long association with this region, I believe we should be supporting our farmers, and ensuring the sustainability of our farming communities,” said Kym McHugh.

“These pine and blue gum plantations operate on a continuous 10 year production cycle, and will lock up this valuable land in perpetuity, contributing significantly to increase bushfire risk, a higher cost of vermin control and of expensive road maintenance.”

“Furthermore this forestry will adversely impact on our water resources, both surface and ground water, which in turn impacts on the local ecology, including the significant and endangered Fleurieu Peninsular Swamps.”

“We need to ask why can’t these plantations be situated in more appropriate areas of the state where they will be less disruptive to the community, and can have a positive environmental impact, including the alleviation of rising water tables and salinity”, suggested Kym McHugh.

“I have constantly argued for improved land use planning to better serve the people of Finniss. When elected as your Member of Parliament, I undertake to work tirelessly with our State Government, Local Councils and project developers to ensure better out-comes for our KI and Southern Fleurieu communities.”

“For far too long Finniss has floundered with ‘safe seat syndrome’ and it’s time the people of Finniss acted to make this seat really matter by electing to Parliament some-one free of big party politics who will always put the electorate and people first,” said Kym McHugh

B

ecause of the many concerned phone calls this is an update on the last story ‘and then there was one’, not any more, put another 10 with it that makes 11, yes Molly has another 10 donkey friends. Molly from Normanville’s donkey friend Pearl, died at Christmas time leaving Molly very sad. The Yankalilla Regional News (last issue) suggested stopping and giving her a carrot, but Molly was lying down and not eating, pining for her long lost friend. Nina asked friends what to do and they suggested calling to see Julie & Peter Barlow, who have looked after donkeys for eighteen years.

Everyone agreed that Molly needed another donkey friend and because they had lost their oldest donkey last year, they invited her to stay on their acreage. At first Molly followed the dark pony (maybe she reminded her of Pearl).

But now the smallest donkey Princess is following Molly around, maybe soon they’ll be best friends. But for now she’s walking and eating and is much loved.

Eyers Family

I

was hoping that one of your readers could help me? My grandmother, Ruth Reynolds (nee Eyers) was born in Yankalilla on August 16th 1867. Her parents were Isaac & Marion Eyers (nee McLeod). Marion Eyers died in 1877 at Yankalilla and her husband died in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1907. Ruth Eyers married Joseph Reynolds (my Grandfather) in Dunedin, NZ in 1893. She had 1 brother Isaac & 2 sisters – Annie, married John William (Bill) Reynolds, a brother of Joseph in Dunedin, NZ date unknown & Jane died at 6 weeks of age. Has Isaac Eyers senior who would have been my great grandfather any descendants in Yankalilla or thereabouts? I would like to know as there are no records as to what happened to the family between 1899 & 1893.

Maybe I have relatives I have never heard of and if possible would like to make contact. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hose Down

t the recent Tour Down Under cycle race I was a participant with two other friends in the stretch from Delamere to Yankalilla.

After a very hot and exhausting ride it was just amazing to come into Yankalilla, with only about a kilometre to ride to have a very much appreciated hose down by a considerate gentleman with his garden hose from his yard across the pavement. This had to be the highlight of the ride, apart from finishing. We couldn't see too well through the sunglasses after this but we didn't care.

I wanted to write to your paper in the hope that the gentleman concerned would read this and know how much we appreciated his thoughtfulness. If they had an award for the most supported resident of Yankalilla during the Tour Down Under then he would definitely get it. Or at least an Australia Day Award.

I am sure that my friends and I were not the only

ones who were grateful, so on behalf of them I thank you as well.

We look forward to the next years race.

or reasons to be decided, fishing patches along the coast have proved more fruitful this season. Perhaps it is a result of net buyback schemes or just weather patterns regarding fish migration.

But I was about to take advantage of the situation because my daughter and her family were arriving from Scotland for a brief stay. I haven’t seen her for 10 years and it had been this long since she had eaten fresh fish. A couple of days before their arrival I decided it was the day to go fishing, just after the weather had calmed.

On the second patch I fished there was the tell tale whiting bite that is hard to mistake from the hand of the experienced fisher, and came a beautiful specimen of King George whiting. I was fishing on my own and within 20 minutes I had caught eleven fish, one short of the bag limit. You know I sat there for another hour and finally got the 12th fish. It was a rat obviously not with the

previous school. I couldn’t be bothered checking the size I thought what the hell its only one small fish. Looking into its eye I had somehow broken that act of compulsion that fishermen seem to get obsessed with “got to get one more”. It was probably only a second or two it hovered on the surface of the water on release but it seemed longer to me before it disappeared, long enough for me to contemplate a myriad of thought. I thought about the decision that was entirely in my hands.

Whether this fish should live or die. I conjured up thoughts like I was in battle and he was my foe, but he had done nothing to me, his only crime was he was in high demand for the table. Truly a king in the eyes of the seafood gourmets. You have probably heard people say whiting is overrated, but very often people just ruin fish by overcooking. Most fish have a delicate flavour and a more individual taste

than any other meats. So what appeals to some is distasteful to another but a true fish eater doesn’t mind the differences. Where a picky people prefer a bland type of fish, whiting fits this category so it so in demand. My contemplation was of my own that day and I felt good about it, and if he meets my hook again lets hope he is the 13th fish, for he is really a king in seafood gourmet. The name King George named after King George the 5th said to be his favourite fish on a trip to Australia. King George not so often termed now as just whiting. But once a king always a king, lets hope and what do they say once a night is enough. That seems to be a fading memory too.

Jacobs Creek Down Under Heats Up

J

anuary 20th saw a contingent of home grown and international riders take to the street, roads and some very steep hills of the

Fleurieu Peninsula. It was an almost unbearable scorcher of a day, which was a bit unfortunate for the ladies selling scones with jam and cream.

It was a great opportunity for some of the local charities to make a bit of money from the food stalls; anyone with ice would have been a winner that day! There was a great turnout, with the residents of all the communities along the 154km stretch showing their support,

culminating in an exciting finish at Yankalilla to a very enthusiastic crowd. This was in appreciation to Yankalilla being given the race finish for the first time. Well done also to the “Be Active” riders who took part in the activities of the day.

TOUR DOWN UNDER On January 20th the Sporting Club had to prepare 2,500 salad rolls for the Be Active Tour.

This was a huge project which had to be completed early on the morning of the race. All clubs needed to supply workers for an early start. At 5am we had 46 people, all keen to get on with it!

This was a great effort and proved that the members of the Sporting Club can come together and work as a team. Thank you to all these people, and thanks to the Normanville Bakery and Yankalilla Foodland for their cooperation and help in this project.

PAVING After years of discussion, this project was taken on by Kym

Clarke, who organized the advertising, promotion and co-ordination of buyers, suppliers, delivery and the Yankalilla Landscape paving boys. Thanks also to the volunteers who helped the paving crew, headed by George Herd and Bobby Willis, who donated heir time and expertise to this project. Well done.

If you have paid for a named paver, come along and have a look at the finished area so far. If you haven’t bought a named paver (but were going to), the areas on each end are to be paved in stages 2 and 3 and will be completed if and when sufficient orders are taken. So don’t miss out this time.

Twenty eight teams participated, the weather was very kind to us and the greens ran well.

On Thursday January 26th we held a Mufti Day to celebrate the 80th birthday of our Patron, Rick Leuenberger. This turned out to be a great day well patronised by all of his bowling friends, according to Rick, one that he will never forget.

We also have had a very successful Night Owls season, with more teams entered and lots of fun. If you would like to try bowls perhaps you would consider joining Night Owls next season or playing Winter Bowls. More information in future newsletters.

Yankalilla Art Group To all Members I wish you a very happy 2006. Unfortunately, due to a change in circumstances regarding Public Liability Insurance, the 2006 Art Year will begin the first Thursday in March, not February as usual. I will notify everyone as soon as possible when I have the relevant information, but I am very confident that this problem will be solved to our satisfaction in the next couple of weeks. I am sorry for the delay to what I hope will be an exciting year of painting.

Gallery 88 concluded 2005 with a very successful exhibition called ‘Contrasts’ and opened January 2006 with an exciting and vibrant exhibition by professional artists called ‘Eight of the Best’. The artists were B. Mahoney, M. Martin, S. Preston, T. and L. Lewitzka, D. Faccin, P. Chaplin and G. Tetlow, We were very privileged to have their work on display, selling works by B. Mahoney and T. Lewitzka within the first few days of opening. B. Mahoney also kindly donated an oil painting of Normanville Beach to be raffled in support of the gallery.

It has also been encouraging to find that our endeavours have been supported by Council Members, local businesses, such as Trafford Hill Premium Wines, holiday visitors, local people and celebrities such as Nicky Downer AM and film and TV personality Gary Sweet.

January also notched up the gallery’s First Birthday. A year of triumphs and disappointments, lots of laughs and an optimistic enthusiasm that it was going to succeed and continue to do so as a show case for local artists and a draw card for tourism. A sincere thank you to the Council for providing signage for ‘gallery 88’ in a prominent position beside the Post Office at the entrance to Yankalilla township.

We are now included in the State-wide brochure ‘Art Trail of the Fleurieu Peninsula,’ which is now available at various outlets in our area. It is pleasing to discover that our gallery is building up a reputation for the quality and diversity of work produced by its members.

Creativity, in what ever form, should never be allowed to stagnate and therefore the challenge is ever present to extend the boundaries of experience both for the artist and the observer.

In March 2006, gallery 88 will extends its own boundaries by an invited showing of the members’ work at the Links, Lady Bay. The exhibition is free and all paintings will be on sale.

embers of Yankalilla C.W.A met for the first time in 2006 on February 1st. President Glenda Oats welcomed everyone and extended a special welcome to prospective new member, Irene Gibson.

It was a cool rainy afternoon; so welcome after the fierce heat of January. Our roll call this month was "An ambition you never achieved”. The range of ambitions was a real eye-opener and ranged from travelling to far away places, teaching, and careers in the navy or police force, to a coloratura soprano and a spinner and weaver. Our Devonshire Scones stall at the Tour Down Under Cycle Race was a disaster due mainly to the very hot weather that day. We had a good position under a gazebo where people were passing to and fro all day. We sold just three scones! No one wanted a scone with jam and cream in that heat, and who can blame them? Our main topic at the meeting was our 70th Birthday, which will be on the 1st November this year. Whilst arrangements for this are only in the early stages, any past members who would like to attend our celebration may to like contact Glenda Oats on 8558 3054 or Shirley Jones on 8558 3643. Alternatively, if you know of any past members whom you think may be interested please let us know so that we can contact them. There will be no meeting at our rooms in March. Instead, we are going to the Range Road Uniting Church Garden Party on Thursday, 2nd March. I know we will have a lovely afternoon, we always do. Handicraft in March will be on Wednesday 22nd. How do I know my youth is all spent?

Well, my get up and go has got up and went But, in spite of it all, I'm able to grin, When I think of where my get up has been.

Old age is golden, so I've heard said, But, sometimes I wonder when I get into bed With my ear in a drawer and teeth in a cup, And my eyes on the table until I wake up.

As sleep dims my eyes. I say to myself, Is there anything else 1 should lay on the shelf?

But, I'm happy to say, as I close the door My friends are the same, perhaps even more.

When I was young, my slippers were red.

My schedule's all scheduled with complete repetition I get up each morning and dust off my wits Pick up the paper and read the "obits", If I see my name missing, I know I 'm not dead.

So, I eat a good breakfast and go back to bed

New Regional Wine and Food Brochure Launched Wine and food lovers have something new to look forward to with the release this month of the first wine and food tourism map & brochure from the Southern Fleurieu and Currency Creek regions.

he brochure has been developed by a group of local wine, food and retail businesses called ‘Toast of the Coast’ with sponsorship from the City of Victor Harbor and the Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Group.

The brochure will be available from visitor information centres, cellar doors, accommodation venues and other businesses throughout the region.

hen the newly named “Mill Tavern” reopened its doors on 28th December with new management and changes it was a packed audience. There was a new menu with popular “good pub food” schnitzels, fish, steak & the Mill Burger. But also an English menu with steak and Guinness pie, mushy peas etc, all at affordable prices. The pub has an “Old English pub theme” said Peter with his broad English accent, who hadn’t worked behind a bar for over thirty years, but really impressed both his wife and customers with his friendly nature. Julie is still running the newly refurbished Mill Cottages, the accommodations side of Leonard’s Mill, and also doing the marketing for weddings, conferences and functions for which Leonard’s Mill was designed, with its range of function rooms and variety of rooms for guests to stay the night. Kerry Barlow their eldest daughter got married on the large lawn area of the historic flour mill in January, with their grandson throwing rose petals on the path in front of the bride and proud father, it was a great day with some beautiful photographs taken. Glenda from Cape Jervis had her 40th birthday there with a DJ and over 100 invited guests. Julie didn’t charge for the private function as Glenda’s friends helped to clean up afterwards and Glenda booked a spa apartment with the guests staying in the cottages, everyone enjoyed themselves. So if you have a special occasion – engagement, wedding or birthday or if you want to hold your next meeting at a great venue - please ring Julie on 8598 4184 to discuss your individual needs. Six conferences are booked in the next two months but these are mostly mid week, leaving most weekends free. Yankalilla Youth & Community Centre Fundraising and Planning Update

A

t $15,300 which is now the community fundraising total, we are within sight of the $20,000 target. The Founding Memberships have been particularly successful raising so far $7,100 (10 Corporate and 21 Family). Individual events, the Cabaret for which we largely

have Ron Tremaine and Sandi McMenamin to thank, the Launch and the Carols Night in Jubilee Hall raised approximately $1000 each and the raffle about $2,400. The remainder has been made up of subscriptions among which the Churches have been outstanding. We must not forget that the Yankalilla and District Lions Club, its members very much a part of the local community has therefore been wonderfully supportive and we hope that this support will continue with future events and ongoing participation in the Founding Memberships and Named Pavers Schemes.

Much depends of course on the result of the Application for $220,000 from the Regional Partnerships scheme and we are now hoping to hear this result before the end of February 2006.

Planning of the Centre has entered its more detailed phase though, one major concept proposed by Paul Elliott has been introduced. This is the possibility of opening the stage area to the East out into an open air auditorium. At the most recent meeting with the architect, Michael Noble, it was agreed that the building would be designed so that any open air theatre could be created in a second phase. A consensus was largely reached about other details and decisions are to be finalised at the next meeting on 21st Feb. If we do not get the nod we may have to modify our plans but by hook or by crook we are determined that the centre will happen.

I am delighted to report that three of our students achieved perfect scores in one of their subjects and were invited to attend Government House to be presented with a merit award from the Governor of South Australia Marjorie Jackson. IMPROVED NATIVE VEGETATION REGULATIONS

F

armers and the environment will benefit from changes to South Australia's native vegetation regulations announced by the State Government today.

Environment and Conservation Minister John Hill said the changes set up a system so that where the land is actively farmed, and that's demonstrated, farmers could clear native vegetation regrowth less frequently as part of a pasture renovation program if they elected to enter into a management plan arrangement.

"This new system will provide farmers with increased security for their long-term planning," Minister Hill said.

"The changes will also benefit the environment because more native vegetation will be retained in the landscape at any one time. "These management plans may be used where native vegetation has regrown on land consistently used for pasture or on land that has been the subject of a regional land degradation process, such as salinity. "The farmers management plan will identify an appropriate time frame for pasture renovation involving the clearance of native vegetation. "This approach provides farmers with an alternative to the 'five year rule' - one of a number of exemptions in the regulations allowing the clearance of native vegetation without the need for a formal clearance approval.

"The ‘five year rule’ exemption allows for the clearance of

native vegetation that has regrown on land used for agriculture or forestry within the previous five years in order to maintain the land for that use.

There is no doubt that the 'five year rule', operating in isolation, has encouraged some farmers to clear land that they may not otherwise have chosen to clear in order to avoid the need to seek formal clearance approval at some future time." Minister Hill said that farmers could still choose to use the ‘five year rule’ exemption or make a formal application to the Native Vegetation Council for approval to clear native vegetation.

"These changes have been developed following consultation with both farmer and conservation interests, in particular the Conservation Council of South Australia and the South Australian Farmer's Federation. I would like to thank both organisations for working with me to develop this new system," he said. "Further work is needed to develop a framework for the management plans that will be simple and cost effective to prepare. I would like to thank the individual farmers who have already been involved in helping to develop this process." For further information about management plans and other changes to the native vegetation regulations please contact the Native Vegetation Council on telephone 8124 4753.

Options for Yankalilla Dump

ankalilla Council are presently considering the options available for the services provided at the rubbish dump. According to Yankalilla Council CEO, Roger Sweetman, there are a number of options. Do council use the site as a Transfer station (rubbish is dumped there and taken to pedlars creek), a recycling station (only rubbish that can be recycled can be deposited at the site), a rubbish dump (continue as is but build a new landfill cell in accordance with E.P.A. requirements), Close the dump and rehabilitate it, or establish a joint operation with City of Victor Harbor council who have nearly filled their current dump.

“All of the above options cost money and in my opinion,” said Mr. Sweetman, “irrespective of what people say about planning decisions, wind farms etc, the issue of managing rubbish will be the most important decision that council in this district has to make.”

An example of how expensive rubbish management is, can be seen with the Myponga dump. Council have to rehabilitate the Myponga dump and the government are putting conditions upon that work which will see the project costing between $600,000 and $900,000.

It is estimated that closing Yankalilla dump could cost in excess of $2 million.

Yankalilla Council together with the Southern Fleurieu councils are engaging consultants to prepare a rubbish management strategy.

This document is to be completed by June this year; and will help the Councils identify opportunities for cooperation which will reduce costs, and allow planning for future issues.

Roger also pointed out that Council has no responsibility to provide a dump and in fact many councils in South Australia don’t.

Greens Candidate Douglas McCarty

he Yankalilla Regional News had the pleasure of a personal visit from the local Greens candidate, Douglas McCarty. After a bit of background information, which covered his wife Claire of 33 years and his adult daughter who is a stem cell researcher and musician we moved onto the purpose of his visit. This was to share his views on the environment, health, future of oil and the economics involved with this as well had his views of the education system amongst other things. Douglas is a very passionate advocate of the issues that the Greens represent here at home and globally. We discussed a wide range off issues, firstly the issue of the Victor Harbor Road, which is a bit of a mess, and after a discussion about peak oil demands and the need for youth of this area to travel on the road to access education subjects not covered at Yankalilla, he did support the need for responsible maintenance of our road system. Education is very high on his list of priorities (having been

a high school teacher for many years) with the philosophy of prevention with any problems with the kids rather that trying to step in after the fact. Whilst we had the opportunity, we asked his opinion regarding the state of the Rapid Bay Jetty and the impact its closure has had on the economy of the district.

Douglas stated that he believed it should be repaired with State Government money, as it is a very important part of our Industrial Heritage as well as being a very important tourist attraction.

Housing issues were discussed with the belief that homeowners should be rewarded with incentives for building environmentally friendly housing. He believes wind farms are a nice idea.

The Greens promote a preventative community based approach to health care. With Industrial Relations they support workers rights balancing work, family recreation and rest. In housing issues the Greens support the restoration of the goal of the SA

Housing Trust and the upgrading of housing design and performance standards.

Douglas, although he concedes it will be a battle to win this

historically “safe” Liberal seat stated the tide is changing somewhat and hopes people will make an informed decision and make good use of their preferences.

The Cape Jervis Community Club

T

he Cape Jervis Community Club is thriving and involvement of members of the community far and wide is increasing. The new committee is building on the hard work of previous committees and in its focus on the Club’s role as a providing a community service, hopes to see more and more residents of and visitors to the area sharing in the wonderful facilities of the Club.

In the last few weeks there have

been a number of birthday parties as part of the usual Saturday night event, some private Christmas parties, a great Club Christmas party and the old year was danced away on the beautiful dance floor as the New Year drew near (the dance floor will be uncovered and available for its intended purpose at least one Saturday night a month).

More and more people are making the most of excellent and inexpensive meals on Saturday

evening as well as the welcoming social aspect of the Club.

Thursday evening is a particularly social time with the bar open and snacks such as bangers and mash available. This year a full calendar is developing with a special event planned for each month, including a Family Day on Easter Sunday, a Barn Dance, Christmas in July, a Rock and Roll evening, Euchre and Pool competitions.

So join the ever-increasing crowd flocking to the Cape for dinner

Mt Compass Agricultural Careers Beefing up Education to Milk out a Career

D

ec 22nd saw 20 people both farmers and prospective dairy i n d u s t r y participants travel by bus f r o m M t Compass to the Adelaide Zoo. It was planned that by combining some guest speaker on the bus with the Education Unit at the Zoo that the tourist would get a good insight to attracting, training and retaining people to the industry.

Dairy Careers Project organised Peter Both (Project Manager, Futures Connect from DECS) to speak about the requirement of DECS in regards to the legal, professional and personal areas of having work experience student, workplacement students and the first time employee.

Most of the basics that his department required were felt by the group as probably a great place to start with an employment strategy for any business and employee / employer relationships. Peter spoke about the varying needs and expectations of the different generations within the workforce and how they interact with in that workforce and then how those business need to understand these relationships. Peter gave a great opening and insight for the session

by Ruth Hall (Education Unit Manager for the Adelaide Zoo). Jill McKenzie found Peters tips on dealing and training young people very useful and that it would help her at home with her younger staff and any students wanting to do work experience on the farm in the future.

Some challenging questions were posed and suitably rewarded by Kym Mathew to the group about them fulfilling their needs and what they were expecting from the day. He also challenged their knowledge on the local dairy industry, Mt Compass Area School Dairy Careers Project, SADA and the Adelaide Zoo. At the zoo in one of the interactive display rooms Ruth Hall took the group through the process of what the Zoo requires to and from work

experience candidates. She explained the “Job and Persons” specification required showed the actual job description and then explained the selection process. Trevor Anderson and John Burger found this area of the session valuable as they were looking to improve these processes in their businesses.

Ruth then explained the induction process that they use for students as well as new employees is extremely critical as the level of compliance forced upon them by their insurance company and Workplace Services requires them to be extremely organised and well versed in the documentation of the process. Matt Campbell (Trainee) found that the process allows all parties to be aware of their own and joint responsibilities in a good working relationship and that this would be a great basis for developing better working conditions.

Both Tristan and Rob Mulhern were very keen on the staff development structure that Ruth explained with the reference to some resource material that she has made available to the group. Rob as always was keen to learn new processes and asked some very good thought provoking questions. Jill McKenzie and Wendy Ness were very impressed by the professional approach and wide knowledge base that the zoo utilised in developing long term learning environment for all staff to maintain a culture of individual development leading to better business development.

Much was discussed over a beautiful lunch catered by the zoo and gratefully sponsored by “National Foods”, “Dairy Farmers” and ‘Warrnambool Cheese & Butter”.

The Connor family thought the presentation to be a good way to learn about how other business deal with the generation gap, how to sought out what everyone needs in employment situation and just a different view of the complicated human resource area.

trip to Mt Compass to speak about the need for more communication between industries and educators.

Jane hopes to promote a variety of industries so that more people are a w a r e of t h e gr ea t c a ree r opportunities within agriculture and that the need for a defined career path is critical to possible employees for them to believe in a future within our industry. Gino Pacitti was one of the many that enjoyed the day and summed up the day by saying that it was a great learning experience missed out by those who were reluctant to look outside their square.

Thanks to DairySA, all three milk companies, Chariot Charters, DECS and the Adelaide Zoo for an informative and interesting day.

Rumination Notes

he Dairy Careers project officer (DCPO) organised with the Mt Compass Area School (MCAS) a preview of what will be happening in the future with the on going promotion of both agriculture in the Fleurieu region and the wonderful resources available to them at their school.

Tim Vale from the Conservation Council of SA spoke initially about the unique and rare plants and animals in the schools wetland and what a fantastic resource the boardwalk was. Great opportunities could be gained by allowing people, student’s etc the easy and safe access along with the fact that it is in close proximity to a major thoroughfare these facilities are a great learning tool. Tim pointed out his role as a resource to the school has made himself available for classroom and whole of school activities.

The staff then ventured to the new interpretive centre adjacent to the wetlands and at the yard area for the Focus Farm. Greg Mitchell, local agronomist Mike Connor and Kym Mathew (Dairy Business operators) then spoke about the focus farm and its linkages to the local farmers as well as the rest of the dairying areas within the region. Greg spoke of the trials on farm and their values to industry as a tool for improving productivity and sustainability. The measuring and monitoring by the school and the fact that they put all t h e d a t a on t h ei r w e b s i t e (www.compassas.sa.edu.au/ focus.html) allows any person interested to have a look at what the school is doing with agricultural industries.

Mike and Kym spoke about the commitment local farmers have to the farm and the school both offered their assistance in any projects the school wished to take on. The

linkage and importance of the Focus farm to the agricultural community and the MCAS may allow a much bigger picture to un-fold for all involved.

DCPO then described a process negotiated with the school and the DCPO committee a project plan to bring bus trips from other Fleurieu schools to the MCAS wetlands and focus farm. To complete the process of an Adventure into Agriculture the bus would visit as well an innovative and leading edge dairy (Clelands Dairies) as well as the award winning local cheese making factory (Alexandrina Cheese). The whole teaching staff of MCAS then embarked on the proposed trip.

At Alexandrina, Dan and Krystina explained their business and how it has progressed and diversified from milk producing to a milk consuming business. They both had great enthusiasm and passion for dairying and its related industries and were glad to show how some MCAS students had helped them grow and manage their business. The cheese’s, as well as the McCaul’s business and how it offers opportunities for young people to enter the workforce impressed all.

DCPO then forced the staff to test their dairy industry knowledge and he was both impressed and amazed at the varying levels within the group. Some staff won’t need any chocolates for a while.

Last point of call was to Clelands’ dairy to see how a high tech large dairy operates. Most staff had not seen this number of cows up close and personable before and was very impressed by the cows and premises.

Amazingly some were delighted to see several former students operating at several sites in this workplace.

The nature of the workload on this farm gave great opportunities for part time casual work over hours that allowed uni type students to work in the local area and still complete their studies. Jill and Lee gave a run down on their business and how the saw the employment opportunities for students from MCAS and how they as staff could progress in their business as well as within the industry. Some were amazed that dairy cattle end up as beef in the market place and that dairying is an industry with a lot of scope for learning resources and career paths.

Thanks must go the McCauls, McKensies and Jacobs for allowing the MCAS staff to see their business operation. To Greg Mitchell for his knowledge and passion about the Focus Farm.

was dining in the Normanville hotel two tables away from you the night you visited and dined there. I witnessed your actions and I must say that from my observations that you acted inappropriately and your comments were unnecessary to say the least. I too visit this great region and have frequented the Hotel for some years now. On that night we were all told of the delays that could be

expected due to the absence of a senior chef. I also observed your argumentative behaviour and the way you lashed out at the waitress, who then went and got Lesley to discuss your problem further.

I know the management and staff always do their utmost to provide pleasant and professional service any time we go there. I believe the only mistake that night was that management hadn’t made it clear that animals were not allowed on the premises because Mr Baxter you are a goose! I think you should

second to none in the area.

I don't believe we have the full story, and so it is hard to make a judgement, but I will say that the staff should not be expected to tolerate abuse that could intimidate and upset other patrons of the hotel without defending it's reputation. I would have to support Lesley's advice : 'go somewhere else' .

The patrons didn't need such disruptions to what would otherwise have been an enjoyable meal in ambiance rarely found outside the city.

It is obvious by the number of guests that are catered for on a weekly basis that their reputation is Editor’s Note: testament to their success.

Succession Planning

ast month I introduced the idea of “Succession Planning”. Simply put, this means planning for when you part company with your business, when you stop being involved. This may mean closing down or selling out to either family, employees or on the open market. Unfortunately, very few businesses survive their original owner. Worse still, very few owners recover anything like a fair proportion of the time and money they put into a business. That doesn’t have to be so. Here are a few questions I would like you to ask yourself.

How much have I really invested in the business?

Is my business honestly saleable?

Do I have a clear idea of who to and how much?

If I were in their position, what would I offer for it?

Is it doing well enough to be an attractive buy?

How much is represented by saleable assets?

How much is represented by profitability, reputation, etc?

What future potential has the business?

What effort and investment does it need to realize on this?

Can my business survive and thrive without me?

By now, most of you will be noticing there are some major discrepancies between what you have invested and what the business may be worth to someone else.

This issue of the “worth” of a business as a stand alone entity is the first of many to be considered. From there, it is a case of examining your needs, any family involvement, any continuing involvement, how to maximize value and more. Don’t shoot the messenger

I

n this article we are talking about something which doesn’t come naturally. It is all about not shooting the messenger.

We all know the most valuable customer is one who is happy, doesn’t complain, comes back regularly and buys a decent amount of product. No argument there.

Who is the next most valuable? Answer ; the customer who isn’t happy, complains and doesn’t come back.

Even if it takes a while for them to give up or a competitor scoops them up. These people are your free business advisors. This person is giving you feedback.

All you have to do is listen. Who needs highly paid consultants? Ahh well, there is the problem. You see, most of us are not good listeners. Worse still, we are not comfortable and can even be aggressive towards people who tell us things we don’t want to hear. In fact, the more something irritates you, the more sign it is you should listen. It is a stronger message.

Over a whole year, the range of issues covered is likely to include just about every aspect of your business.

Most of what you say, do or don’t do. They may be little issues or something major. For those with a shop, how many times do you get asked the same questions?

“Do you have……?” or “Where is ……?” If you have the item, look to relocate it to a more visible location and even put up a shelf talker to cut your workload and make things simpler for the customer. Ever asked how many people have just walked out because they couldn’t find what they wanted? Don’t assume all those who didn’t ask had found the item and bought it.

If you didn’t have it in stock, keep a lost sale log and consider putting it into stock or make sure it doesn’t run out. What about if you seem to get a lot of “useless” enquiries? Check how and where you promote and if you are targeting the right potential customer. On the other hand, is there additional demand for something worth servicing? The number of these situations will seem to be infinite and they are a mine of information for you.

Many may seem to be unjustified or may even be so, but how you respond to these situations is a most valuable input to your business and the quickest way to improve your sales and reduce your stress. The best is the benefits are long term.

Learn to step outside of your business. Make a commitment. Tomorrow morning come in to work and look forward to being criticized. Opportunity knocks.

Basically, it’s all grown from there, with refurbishments and relocating the chemist.

How? “I’ve really not planned this … I’ve just taken opportunities as they arose!”

Future? “At 68, I’m not about to retire!

The Success Story:

he Yankalilla Area Commerce and Community Association Inc, as one of its main projects for 2006, will be running another Employment Expo. This project is intended to provide a ‘WIN’ situation for our local businesses, our local youth and our local community.

Four years ago, YACCA initiated the first Employment Expo. The two main audiences for this one day event were students at the Yankalilla Area School, who might have been interested in School Based Traineeships or TAFE traineeships and local businesses who might have been interested in employing a trainee.

The Employment Expo included input from many ‘school to work’ agencies and local businesses.

Since this Expo, 15 students from the Yankalilla Area School have been placed as trainees with local businesses, as part of their recognized

school studies. Businesses involved in the Traineeship Program include: Normanville Bakery, Yankalilla Bakery, Graetz Engineering, Normanville Hotel, Lilla’s, Cira, Jensen’s Dairy, and the District Council of Yankalilla.

Natasha’s Story: In 2005, Natasha O’Leary was a finalist in the ‘Maxima School Based Trainee of the Year’ Natasha took up a School Based Traineeship, with the District Council of Yankalilla, when she was in Year 11, as a result of YACCA’s first Employment Expo. She has spent 1-2 days a week over the past two years working at the Council Offices. The rest of the week she spent on her normal school studies at the Yankalilla Area School.

Following the success of this Employment Expo,YACCA, with the co-operation of the Yankalilla Area School, has decided to run a similar event in July 2006.

In preparation for this, YACCA is inviting local businesses, and parents of YAS senior students to a meeting in May (see advertisement on this page) to find out more about this project.

Fleurieu Horse & Pony Club

appy New Year to you all! Yeah I know it's March now but I did miss our last deadline.

The Pony Club has been as busy as usual.

December saw our End of Year Gymkhana.

Libby and Ryan put together a great day for all members with a variety of fun events. This transpired into Club Champion rugs being awarded to Elisha Gallagher for juniors and Jeri Kroll for Seniors. Runners up being Renee Gallagher 2nd and Bella Fyfe 3rd (junior); and Nicole Kay 2nd and Christine Whenham 3rd (senior). Congratulations to all who competed.

Dinner and a sleep-over followed with more great activities next day for those able to stay.

JANUARY Rally was a hot one. A shortened 'twilight' was the go with Tracy Leigh braving the heat to guest instruct for us. Despite the heat which was unrelenting even at twilight Horses and Riders alike benefited from these lessons.

Thanks also to the ever-enduring Denise Dawson for taking lessons too. Kathy put on a great baked potato dinner. Thanks also to our coordinators.

Several members attended EFA Presentation Night. Ryan Fletcher missed out on receiving the Scholarship award by one point. It's yours next year Ryan.

FEBRUARY we had another warm one but not as bad. Several new combinations were out there - horses and riders working well together. Jacqui Sandilands took instruction with each group working on jumping technique and position. It's great to hear the positive feed-back we get from our riders about our instructors - guest and regular. Thanks for the feed Kathy; Deb and Jill.

Speaking of trophies - some of our perpetual trophies have gone AWOL. Previous members, some in memory of ponies that had been much seen around the club and the district, had donated these. Please if you have been a recipient of a Fleurieu Horse and Pony Club trophy, look around those little used spots to see if they may have been packed away somewhere.

COMING UP MARCH - As the Sheep- Dog Trials are on our usual pony club rally day it will be postponed to March 12th. FHPC will be entering 4 teams in the Southern Zone Pentathlon. As pentathlon is part of the Pony Club Curriculum, we encourage that all members that aren't participating themselves go along and cheer on our teams.

This is our only rally for March so please try to get along and join the fun. 0900 meet at Mountain Pony Club, which is on Williams Road Mt Barker.

APRIL - As members of the Southern Zone of PCASA we are obliged to commit hours per member for working bee maintenance of Monarto Equestrian Centre. We are able to combine this with rewarding pony club rally time to get something back from these fantastic grounds. April 2nd Rally is it. More Details to follow. Enquiry's to Libby or Ryan.

CATCHMENT RESOURCE CENTRE NEWS

s mentioned in our last newsletter article, this summer we will once again be holding a series of evening information sessions. Unfortunately we had to postpone our first planned session on Lizards and Reptiles to be presented by Chris Daniels, Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide’s School of Earth & Environmental Sciences and Director of the Biocity Centre for Urban Habitats. However Chris has promised us a very special presentation later in the year with, in his own words, “some very special beasts – some special snakes, and I hope a croc!!” At this stage we are planning to reschedule the presentation to early April – stay tuned to articles in future newsletters for confirmation of dates and times.

Summer Series Presentation Fleurieu Peninsula 2005 Eagle Survey February 15, 2006 Terry Dennis, coordinator for Birds SA, has recently conducted a survey of eagle nesting locations in our region. The project set out to determine the number and distribution of large eagles (White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Wedge-tailed Eagle) on the Fleurieu Peninsula during the 2005 breeding season.

Terry had an excellent response to his call for information about eagles and found that people in the Fleurieu rural community generally had a positive attitude toward eagles, particularly among landowners lucky enough to have them nesting ‘in the gully up the back’. Terry will be sharing his findings with us during an evening session to be held at the Normanville Catchment Resource Centre on February 15, 2006.

There will be a sausage sizzle available from 6.00pm with Terry’s presentation commencing at 6.30pm. Please phone the centre on 8558 3644 to book your place.

We are also planning to have a Healthy Land Healthy Horses information evening in March. Guest speaker Simon Welch, Land Management Adviser with Land Management Program will speak on pasture and grazing management and a vet will be present to discuss the causes, symptoms and treatments for Sand Colic, Laminitis (founder), Upper Respiratory Infections, Salvation Jane Poisoning, Grass Seed Ulcers, String Halt and Greasy Heel. Needle Grass: the battle continues

n recent years, a new environmental and agricultural threat has been highlighted in South Australia. Chilean needle grass (Nassella neesiana) and Texas Needle grass (Nassella leucotricha) are perennial tussock grasses that pose a serious threat to temperate native grassland and pasture areas.

Chilean needle grass is one of the 20 Weeds of National Significance (WONS). It has been described as potentially the worst environmental weed of native grasslands, which are amongst the most threatened ecosystems in Australia.

In agricultural regions these grasses reduce pasture production and stock carrying capacity, and can cause injury to the skin and eyes of livestock.

Native to South America, Chilean needle grass was first recorded in South Australia from Lucindale in 1988, while Texas needle grass was recorded in 2000 from the Fleurieu Peninsula.

In 2003, a project with the aim of eradicating Chilean needle grass and confining existing infestations of Texas needle grass was instigated. The project estimated that the number of hectares infested in South Australia is approximately 238ha of Texas needle grass and 14ha of Chilean needle grass. The largest infestation of Chilean needle grass occurs in coastal areas on the Fleurieu Peninsula, while other smaller outbreaks have been recorded from the northern suburbs of Adelaide, into the Adelaide Hills. Texas needle grass has been recorded throughout the Onkaparinga Catchment area.

In 2004, the first year of a control program was implemented. This involved spot spraying individual plants with herbicide as well as an integrated approach of cropping and herbicide application. The majority of the control work was undertaken on Chilean needle grass on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Other work concentrated on infestations of Texas Needle grass on roadsides and private properties within the Clarendon area.

In 2005 the battle against these aggressive grass weeds continued. This was primarily through the project ‘Protecting Agriculture and Biodiversity from Grass Weeds’ funded through the National Heritage Trust 2 program, but also with additional support from the ‘Threat abatement to protect biodiversity in Onkaparinga River National Park’ project, funded by the Australian Government Envirofund A survey was undertaken in the Adelaide Hills region, with no new infestations being identified.

This highlights the importance of containing and treating known infestations swiftly, so as to prevent spread into neighbouring areas.

A field day was held at Onkaparinga National Park to train the members of Friends of Onkaparinga Park (FOOP) on how to identify Texas Needle Grass. The workshop was a success with many members taking part, and as a result of their training FOOP members have identified a number of new infestations within the park.

An evaluation of the previous years control efforts has left the project team cautiously

optimistic. Control efforts have shown some initial success with the density of infestations that were treated in 2004 being reduced in 2005.

The control program in 2005 again included all those infestations treated in 2004. The control work was also expanded to include more infestations on private properties within the Clarendon region as well as infestations within the Onkaparinga River National Park.

Through a combined effort involving

landowners, government and non-government groups we persevere in removing this threat.

he Trash and Treasure in January, was a success again this year. Despite the fact that we were not allowed to advertise, in the district on the day, we had a number of people through the gates. We would have liked to see more, come to look and buy at the range of stalls that were there. The weather on the day was very nice, if a little hot later on.

Our next Beetle game will be held on Sunday February 19th. We will start at 12 noon with a pooled lunch, play beetle and have afternoon tea.

he Yankalilla Amateur Basketball Association summer season is drawing to a close with 3rd and 4th places in the finals still up for grabs. In the women's competition, Supercats and Jaguars have cemented their spot in the finals, as with Centurions and Demons in the men's.

The remaining closely matched games are sure to be hard fought out to decide those final spots. Players please note the following changed dates for summer finals.

In Junior news, the Yankalilla Amateur Basketball Association has three teams competing in the Junior Country Championships being held over the March long weekend, where 107 teams have nominated. The under 12 and under 14 boys team and the under 14 girls team will play two matches on both Saturday and Sunday, and we wish them luck for a berth in the finals on Monday.

Many thanks to Jason Hughes and Dean Revill for coaching the teams, and Richard Doyle and Alan Hinks for agreeing to referee at the carnival. Training continues on Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. Good Luck to all competing.

Yankalilla Sheep Dog Trials

ill be held at the Yankalilla Showgrounds on March 5th & 6th The trialling will begin at 8.30am and continue until about 5.30 each day.

We are expecting a record number of entries this year, and are coming from as far as the Riverland, South East, Mid North, Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas. We are also expecting entries from Victoria and New South Wales.

The top dogs of the trialling world will be competing. These will include the State Champion and Finalists of the 2005 trialling year.

Admission will be by gold coin donation.

Local entries are invited in the Encourage Class.

This class is for dogs of beginner status.

aturday January 14th saw the Ninth Annual rodeo take place. The evening began around 5.30p.m. and despite the cold and windy weather crowd numbers were good. There were six standard events which were grouped into two categories. Saddlebronc riding, bareback bronc riding and bull riding fell into the rough riding category, while steer wrestling, rope and tie and team roping were the three events of the timed category. The cowboys and girls provided the

crowd with lots of thrills and spills as the events of the night unfolded. The Yankalilla Twilight Rodeo complied with all rules and regulations and the only injuries were to a couple of cowboys which hit the ground pretty hard.

(Nothing serious) Once again, local sponsors and organisations provided plenty of food and drink and the Jim Hermel Country Band got many of the crowd "toe tappin' " as the after rodeo entertainment. The event was well set out with excellent viewing positions all round. Well done to organisers for ample bathroom facilities too! Rotary and Lions clubs of Yankalilla must be congratulated on another successful event, with funds raised going to many local and other needy charities.

Black Tuesday Memorial Service

I

n January, Ian & Judith Uppill, of Normanville travelled to Eyre Peninsula to attend the Black Tuesday Memorial Service which was held at the Wangarry oval on Wednesday 11/1/2006 for victims of the devastating bushfires of 11/1/2005. A total of 83,000 hectares of land were burnt, with many losses, including the lives of 9 people (5 adults and 4 children).

The service was very well organized and very sensitively carried out by all involved. It was a very emotional time for all who attended, including Judith and Ian, as pictures of the fire and the lives lost were shown on a huge screen.

They met a mother and her teenage daughter prior to the service commencing and she shared with them their family's loss of their old renovated stone home, set amongst 15 acres of scrub, and all that was in it.

Everything around it including their shed which housed all her husband's building tools was also destroyed. The Shed has been rebuilt and the couple are living in a tent behind the new shed whilst their teenage children are housed in caravans.

At the service they met relatives of

Judith who had lost fences, machinery and stock including 70 years of Stud Merino sheep breeding.

Following the service Calendars were available for purchase. These were produced by Natalie Borlase who had lost her Mother Judith and both of her children, daughter, Star aged 3 years and son Jack aged 2 years. Her father Wayne survived the fire with severe burns to his body, needing transport by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to the R.A.H. Burns Unit who were paramount in saving his life. Many of the photos in the calendar were taken by Natalie herself and are a vivid reminder of the tragedy, pain and grief that she and others have experienced.

Judith and Ian offered to bring back a box of 110 calendars, to sell locally, which they have done and are appealing to locals to purchase a calendar to help this very worthy cause. These can be purchased for $10.00 by contacting them on 8558 3930. Proceeds from the sale of these calendars will be donated to the Royal Adelaide Hospital Burns Unit and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, via the Cummins &

District Financial Services.

If this fire had started at Cape Jervis under the same conditions this would have wiped out our ENTIRE Council area of 74,000 hectares and the losses would be much higher with our dense population and hilly terrain, covered with native vegetation, pine forests and inaccessible scrub.

THIS IS A TIMELY REMINDER THAT WE ALL NEED TO TAKE MORE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR OWN BACK YARD AND OUR COMMUNITY, to do MORE to protect the lives of those around us and prevent this happening to us.

We may not be able to control the wind or temperatures BUT we can do more to reduce the risk by slashing roadsides, spraying fence lines, clearing vacant blocks of land, reducing the fuel load, having

efficient fire pump units WHICH ACTUALLY WORK and taking responsibility for our own home.

IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANY OF US, at anytime, anywhere.

TV Reception at Normanville and surrounds Normanville resident Russell Waller has been having trouble with TV reception at Normanville and he claims that it is a wide spread problem in the Yankalilla, Normanville and Carrickalinga areas. Russell has been emailing Yankalilla Council with his problem, but as yet, he has not had the problems fixed.

To keep the Creation alive, we have to have a sort of desert experience to become part of the Spirit of the Nature of this creation and feel what that part really is. For now, what you display, if that is the result of the Reformation, then "long live that Reformation".

Re “Xmas child” must admit I was surprised by some of Ron Roaches statements and the intensity of emotion expressed in reference to Barry Steele & myself.

Even though I have disagreed with Barry Steel doctrinally in regards to the Holy Spirit and the gifts being withdrawn, I in no way wish to condemn or dishonour him or yourself on a personal level. I believe the Holy Spirit gave me the intestinal fortitude to defend Him on solid biblical principles, not from an “argumentative spirit” but out of concern that people have been deceived and were opposing their own salvation and that of others, also grieving the Holy Spirit of Grace, (see Ephesians 4:30, Zechariah 12:10 & Hebrews 10:29). I do not worship Gods Holy word but I do worship God and His Son, the Lord Jesus who spoke it, whose commandments they are. The apostle Paul said in 1st Corinthians, chapter 14:verse 37 “ If any man thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write to your ARE THE COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD” and in 1st John Chapter 2:3 “Hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that says, I know Him and keeps not His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps His word, in him truly is the love of God perfected, by this we know that we are in Him” In reference to the divine nature of Gods Holy word in 2nd Peter chapter

1:20 it is written “No prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation, for the prophecy (of scripture) came not by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit”. Jesus himself said in John 14:15 “IF YOU LOVE ME KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS and I will pray to the Father and He will give you another comforter (The Holy Spirit) that he may dwell with you FOREVER, even the Spirit of Truth.” Psalm 119:verse 105 says “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” Isaiah the prophet clarifies this point in 8:20 “To the law and to the testimony (of God & Christ): IF THEY SPEAK NOT ACCORDING TO THIS WORD, IT IS BECAUSE THERE IS NO LIGHT IN THEM”. To illustrate the power of Gods word, I will recount a bit of recent history that should stand as a sobering warning, back a few years ago there was a “Pastor” of a church group in the USA named Jim Jones, you may remember, it is documented that before he left for the tragic trip to South America he gave his church group an ultimatum, he said to his congregation “too many of you are following what the Bible says, you should be listening to me, following what I say because I am your man of God” with that he threw down the Bible onto the floor and said “from now on I am your man of God and you will follow me” 50% of his congregation got up and walked out, they knew their scripture – they survived, the others who trusted Jim Jones and “the doctrines of men” followed his cult to South

America where they ultimately were forced to take poison, most of them died. The scriptures in Gods word set us free (John 8:32) from treacherous lies, designed by the devil to destroy mankind and the believer if they are caught unawares. In Ephesians 6:17 Paul warns “Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles (subtle attack) of the devil, for your conflict is not only with flesh and blood but also against principalities and powers, against the rulers of darkness in this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Therefore put on the whole armour of God that you may be able to meet the evil one and being prepared you shall prevail. Arise therefore and stand firm, fasten on the belt of truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness, and have your feet shod with the gospel of peace, together with these take for yourselves the shield of faith for with it you shall be able to quench all the flaming darts of the evil one, put on the helmet of salvation and TAKE THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, WHICH IS THE WORD OF GOD!” Jesus was tempted by Satan and He was victorious because He always quoted Gods word, He said “ S a t a n , I T I S WRITTEN...” (Matthew4:1-10). If Jesus Christ the Lord and Messiah used scripture as a sword to battle against the Devil and falsehood how much more ought we who believe!

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

“They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 HANDEL’S ORATORIO – “THE MESSIAH” n the current series of articles we are examining the Bible texts that George Frederick Handel selected to put to music. We will examine them not only for the drama of their presentation by Handel but for the wonderful truths they express.

Included are the prophesied Bible events which await their fulfilment at the Lord’s second coming to reign on earth. This in itself is a challenge to much of Christian teaching today.

I

PART THE FIRST

T

he Oratorio is divided into three main sections. The first part dramatises the great expectancy in Israel for the promised Messiah. It draws upon the great prophecies of the Old Testament that foretold his coming and of the work he would accomplish. He would comfort Jerusalem; cause its warfare to

cease, subdue its enemies (Isaiah 40:1-3). Nothing would be permitted to impede his path: “Every valley will be exalted, and every mountain and hill made low, and the crooked straight and the rough places plain”. In other words every difficulty to the manifestation of his power would be removed, every hindrance overcome, and as a result “the glory of the Lord will be revealed and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it”.

The prophecies showed that the Messiah would exercise considerable power in the earth, shaking the political heavens and earth out of position, causing nations to fall, superimposing on the regime of man, his own glorious rule so that the “desire of all nations shall come in”. They predicted that he would purify Israel (Mal 3:3), elevate Zion, cause his Law to go forth from Jerusalem, drive away the darkness of ignorance that enshrouds mankind and illuminate men with the glorious light of Truth (Micah 4:1-4). As a result, “the Gentiles shall come to thy light

and kings to the brightness of thy rising” Messiah would be universally acknowledged as the Wonderful, the Counsellor, the manifestation of God on earth, the Head of a Divine government, that will rule all nations, the Prince of Peace.

With these expectations in mind, there was considerable excitement in Jewry 2000 years ago when the signs indicated the time was approaching for the manifestation of the Messiah. They looked for a great military Leader, and their keen disappointment in the lowly Nazarene who ultimately appeared in their midst is expressed in the second portion of the Oratorio.

The beautiful haunting melody of the Pastoral Symphony, so suggestive of calm peace, as shepherds tend their flocks on the hillsides of Judea, introduces this portion of the Oratorio.

But the peace is suddenly broken.

The music dramatise the fear and amazement of the shepherds, as there appeared before them an angel, and they heard words proclaiming the momentous news:

“Fear not, for behold I bring you tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a saviour which is Christ the Lord”. The music rises to a crescendo of excitement culminating in the angelic chorus: “Glory to God in the Highest and peace on earth, goodwill towards men” (Luke 2:10-14) The first part ends by words that are suggestive of the ministry of the Lord. He travelled throughout the cities of Judea, calling upon those who are heavy laden with trouble to come unto him; to learn of him, and accept his yoke, and they would find true rest and peace.

Next month we will commence to examine the much larger Part the Second with all of its pathos as the Lord is rejected and despised of men.

he Crows footballers were in February for some pre-season Yankalilla on the 8th and 9th training.

Simon Goodwin and Chris Knights visited the Yankalilla Area School to meet the students and do some autograph signing. The team trained at the Yankalilla oval on the next day with a big audience of Crows supporters looking on.

he 2006 Australia Day Celebrations for the Yankalilla District were held once again at the historical Rapid Bay over looking the much talked about Rapid Bay Jetty.

The Yankalilla Lions Club prepared their traditional sausage sizzle for invited guests and onlookers prior to the start of the c e l e b ra t i on s , wh i l s t S a n d i McMenamin played the keyboard and sang some of her own musical compositions.The Master of Ceremonies Roger Sweetman, Chief Executive, District Council of Yankalilla welcomed all and acknowledged the Traditional Landowners.

The Council Award for Outstanding Cultural Event went to the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival.

The Council Award for Outstanding Service to the Community was presented to Vivienne Bamford. Vivienne moved to the district 17 years ago and has been involved with many community groups since then including, Meals On Wheels, Yankalilla Senior Citizens Housing Community and the Christian Care Car. The Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community was presented to Jim Martin. Jim is an ex councillor and sheep and cattle farmer and was the president of the Poll Dorset Association and is now a life member. He is also involved with the Youth Park Committee, the Youth Park Building Committee, the Museum Committee and is a Lions Charter Member.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB COME SAILING WITH US

T

he summer sailing season is well and truly underway and many successful sailing days have occurred with up to 12 boats on the water. A few days have been missed due to winds being too strong, but members have enthusiastically e mb r ac ed di ff er i n g w ea t h er conditions in order to build skills and test their abilities against the elements. On some days the winds have been light and quite variable and as the boats have drifted along over the water the sea bottom has been clearly visible along with the sea life. Hot conditions can even be experienced on the water on these sorts of days and there can be an almost over riding temptation to jump in and cool off. The only problem with this is that the boat may well continue on and the boatie is left stranded in the water! On other days winds have been quite fresh and gusty with sudden gusts and it takes all the boatie’s skill to remain upright. On these sorts of days there can be unexpected swims and these are not the welcome sort.

We all want those perfect days with the right sort of wind and gin and tonic type sailing, but the challenge of course lies in dealing with the unexpected and improving sailing ability.

The club has purchased a new rescue boat this season with improved capabilities which give members an additional safety margin. Thanks go to Ray Beavis of Total Recovery Upholsterers at Normanville, who made a new canopy for the boat at a heavily discounted price. We are also appreciative of the generous donation of a $50 meal voucher from the Normanville Beach Café, which was won by one of the members during January. Perhaps the owners feel jealous when they see the beautiful sight of the sailing boats on the water each Sunday? The Club certainly appreciates the support of local businesses as it helps to develop a strong community spirit.

If you are you interested why not give it a go? The Club sails on most Sunday afternoons through the warmer months. New members and visitors are always welcome and members are happy to arrange a trial sail if you are interested in joining.

Social contact between members is important too and regular BBQ’s are held as well as an annual dinner.

Rescue Helicopter on Normanville Beach.

here was a great deal of excitement last Saturday, when the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter flew directly along the coastline, then landed on the beach, right in front of the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club.

The Normanville Dolphins, restaurant diners and beach patrons were then given a wonderful surf rescue display by the crew, with the assistance of members of the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club.

The pilot and crew used this training session to show the junior members of the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club and the local community, how they assist in surf rescue. Static Line Retrieval of local surf life saver Shane Rosenboom, was the first display of surf rescue, followed by the ‘Teabag’ Rescue Lift of Emma Thompson (trainee helicopter crew member).

Simon Simms, Normanville SLS Club president said “This gives our junior members a wonderful opportunity to learn how the rescue helicopter assists the club in patrolling the beach. The kids learn on a fortnightly basis, surf survival skills, but all the while the emphasis is on fun and participation.

Programmes of activity include surf safety, board paddling, basic resuscitation and first aid, and if they wish can compete up to national level.” “We would love to see more of the local and weekenders become involved in the fun and learning that is offered here at Normanville.

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter supports the 18 patrolling clubs and the professional lifeguard services operating across South Australia and does so on weekends, public holidays and busy weekdays over summer from November to March.

It helps keep the South Australian community safe through surf rescues, routine beach patrols, shark warnings and preventative actions. The helicopter is fitted with communications systems to connect the service with other emergency services. It also carries primary first aid response equipment, including an Oxygen Resuscitator Unit and Semi Automatic Defibrillator to quickly and efficiently deliver emergency medical treatment whenever life is threatened.

ANIMAL MATTERS PET INSURANCE IS IT WORTH IT? he question about whether or not to insure your pet is something that many pet owners face especially those who have just acquired a new four-legged friend. Our pets do become very dear to us and we become emotionally attached to them. These animals nearly always have a very important part in the home and in a small way become part of the family. People become very distressed when their pets become ill and the shedding of tears over a pet is not unusual at Vet clinics. Clients are also often overjoyed to see their pet in good health, particularly after a nasty illness. Unfortunately despite the miracles of how the body works, accidents and illnesses do befall our animals. Veterinary medicine, whilst able to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, is a very complex science and does not always come at an easily affordable price. A lot of training is required to provide the level of expertise to practice veterinary medicine. X-ray facilities, ultrasound machines, surgical and theatre equipment, ECG machines, dental equipment, microscopes and many medications do not come cheaply. Furthermore there is no state funding

for veterinary practice. This means that invoices for the treatment of conditions such as road accidents, snake bites, canine bloats, complex skin cases, snail bait poisoning, heat stroke, shock, surgical biopsies, urinary tract disorders, womb infections and ongoing cases such as arthritis, heart conditions, diabetes, cancers and many metabolic disorders can amount to several hundred or several thousand dollars.

Any veterinary referral or veterinary attention in the middle of the night is likely to result in a large bill. When sufficient funds are not available a full diagnostic workup and optimum treatment plan are often very difficult or impossible to provide. It is a completely understandable but unfortunately a very common fact that often we are unable to pursue the diagnostic or treatment procedures we would choose because of financial constraints. Pet insurance policies therefore, as with most Insurance policies, provide peace of mind. As with all insurance it is something one hopes one will never need but the fact is that nearly all pets will visit the vet sooner or later for an accident or illness and statistically speaking, if you have pet insurance you are far more likely to use it than your home or car insurance. he first Bronze Medallion Squad for season 05/06 passed their examination on Saturday, January 7th at Normanville Beach, Subjects studied included board use and rescue techniques„ signals, radio use, first-aid, resuscitation, swimming and patient carries Trained by Cathy Smith and Todd Scheer, who gained their Instructor Awards, were local residents Glen White, Andrew Bailey, Mike Shipard, David Catherwood and Richard Meadows. All are now qualified to patrol Normanville beach. Andrew Bailey has been appointed Surf-boat Captain and we hope to again see a Normanville crew on the water. Meals on Friday night are running hot with up to 110 being served some nights.

The bar opens at 5pm and meals are served between 6pm and 8.30pm.

Very importantly, however, the Nipper section under Eddy Ferraro continues to grow at a steady rate and they meet every fortnight at 2pm on Saturdays. he Arthritis Foundation of SA is running a “Moving Towards Wellness” course, a self management course for people with chronic conditions such as arthritis, lung disease, diabetes, heart disease and asthma in Yankalilla starting in March. This course runs for 2.5 hours, one evening a week for six weeks, and is for any person who has one or more chronic conditions.

You can be younger, older, male or female.

Partners, carers and other family members or friends are welcome to attend the course with you. They too will benefit from the problemsolving skills related to managing a chronic condition.

A healthy way to live with a chronic condition is to work at overcoming the symptoms. Many people with chronic conditions suffer fatigue and loss of energy. Some experience pain while others have breathing difficulties. Sleeping problems and depression are common, combined with concerns for the future. Although there are many conditions, the problems and the symptoms associated with each one are often the same.

Many people throughout various Adelaide suburban and country locations have attended these courses and have made extremely positive changes to live. One participant wrote, “The Moving Towards Wellness” course has given me permission to be well again. It has helped me shed all my negative thoughts and take positive steps towards wellness”. Another participant wrote, “The instructors, who themselves were also managing chronic conditions, were warm, empathic and very supportive. As the weeks progressed, the group found things to laugh about, which indicated our growing positive outcomes. Having never experienced group therapy before I was sceptical about it effectiveness, but now I am convinced of its helpfulness.”

In this course you will learn to manage your symptoms, how to communicate effectively with your doctor, how to lesson your frustration, how to fight fatigue and much more.

The course at Yankalilla will be held in the Activity Room of the Medical Centre from Tuesday March 28th until Tuesday May 2nd, from 7pm until 9.30pm. Registration is essential.

Join 300 local ‘champions’ in the team event to fight cancer.

A

s the ‘champions’ hit the track for the Commonwealth Games, Adelaide Cup and Clipsal 500 over coming weeks, around 400 people will be lacing up their shoes for the 2006 Victor Harbor Relay for Life to be held at Victor Harbor Oval on 1 -2 April. The Cancer Council challenges South Australians to ‘team up’ and take part in its 20 hour non-stop community relay event that celebrates life and cancer survival.

Relay for Life events in South Australia have raised $2.2 million over the last five years to help fund The Cancer Council’s cancer research, education, prevention and support programs.

Relay team captain, Peter Godfrey, who lost his wife to bladder cancer 17 months ago, urges the whole community to get together to support everyday champions in their fight against cancer.

“Relay for Life has a real sense of community where you realise that you are not alone. There are many other people who have experienced cancer in similar situations supporting each other and helping to make a difference”, “Everyone becomes part of the bigger picture because every donation makes a difference. Last year the accumulative efforts of all teams in South Australia contributed to an overall amount of $620,000 raised for The Cancer Council. It’s great to be involved in this fantastic achievement.”

According to Relay for Life Event Manager, Christine Robertson, we all know someone who has been affected by cancer - a disease that will directly affect one in three South Australians during their lifetime.

“Everyone involved in this event is united by a common experience - cancer - and in just one day people can make a lifetime’s difference,” she said.

“Participants don’t have to be fit to fit in. Relay for Life is not an athletic event but rather a community event, where people of all ages and fitness levels are welcome.”

Around 25 teams of 10-15 people are expected to take turns to walk or jog with their team baton around Santos Stadium, where they will camp overnight.

Teams and their supporters will enjoy a great carnival atmosphere, and almost 10 hours of live entertainment, a free breakfast, spot prizes and more.

Combined Christian Churches Community Care Car Service Yankalilla

T

he general absence of public transport and the lack of availability of a taxi service in the District Council of Yankalilla area causes great problems for some in our c o m m u n i t y wh o h a v e me d i c a l appointments to attend, or who may have been taken by ambulance to hospital and when discharged need transport back home.

In 1987 a transport service was established by a small group of parishioners from local churches, at first using private cars to fulfil this need. This service has gradually expanded and now uses 3 cars as well as privately owned cars to meet the demand.

The churches presently supporting the “Community Care Car� are the Anglican, Catholic, Fleurieu Assembly of God, Lutheran and Uniting (5CY).

The transport service is available where possible for those in the community (limited to permanent residents in the Yankalilla District Council area) who are aged, infirmed or young disabled who are unable to obtain transport by other means such as their own car, relatives, friends or public transport for medical or allied health appointments and consistent with the government department of Home And Community Care (HACC) guidelines.

It is important to realise that this service is fully run by volunteer Transport Coordinators and drivers in our local community with financial support from the District Council of Yankalilla and some HACC funding.

Donations from Passengers / Clients are encouraged and enable Combined Christian Churches Community Care Car and the District Council of Yankalilla to maintain and expand the service based on need.

Should you need to use the service, to assist the Volunteer Drivers in collecting you from your place of residence for medical appointments please ensure you have a very visible house number (this is also important in case of fire or the need for an ambulance also).

If you need assistance with house numbers as an interim service, our local Normanville Mitre 10 store (phone 85583100) has offered to install or replace house numbers as a community service at special prices.

If qualifying to use the service please provide as much notice as possible for appointments to allow the Transport Coordinator to schedule a car (normally shared with other users) and source a volunteer driver to get you to your scheduled appointment.

adio 5EFM held a fund-raising event on Monday 6th February when they featured the award-winning Johnny Cash movie "Walk the Line" at the Victa Cinemas. Around 215 people thoroughly enjoyed the film, with the result that the radio station raised about $1100, to be spent on essential equipment to provide a good quality service in their listening areas of the south-coast [89.3], Yankalilla [88.3] and Strathalbyn [94.7]. Radio 5EFM would like to thank everyone who helped to make this such a successful event especially Terry

Most of our walks are in the Fleurieu Peninsula but we occasionally venture further a field. We follow the Heysen Trail; explore conservation parks, local forests, cliffs and beaches. Occasionally we are allowed on private property. Every Year we organise other trips; a long weekend and a week long camp. Our walks are graded A, B & C, with the C walk being less than 10km long with no steep hills, B walks are between 10 & 14kms in length and usually steeper, longer hills, A walks are over 14kms and can be quite challenging.

Anyone of average health and fitness should be able to manage C & B walks and probably most A walks too. We include Walk Leaders phone numbers in our printer programmes so that potential walkers can learn more about walks they have doubts about. So if there is anyone out there who is tempted to join us, please do. You will find a group of friendly people who enjoy walking as a leisure activity and who appreciate the beauty and wonder of the Australian bush and its unique wildlife. he Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group held its first Committee Meeting for 2006 on 9th February and has started planning a busy "Calendar of Events" for the year. To start off the year, the Group is inviting members of the public to "Afternoon Tea" between 2 - 4pm on Friday 17th March at the Drop-In Centre, 13 Seaview Road, Victor Harbor. New volunteers and new members are especially welcome. Later in the year, there will be a grand launch and unveiling of the group's new trailer and loan-car, an Awareness Event featuring "Adult Exercise", a Bus Trip with Victor Tours [12th Sept], the Spring Garden Festival [15th, 22nd, 29th October and 5th & 12th Nov], Christmas Tree Exhibition (16th & 17th Dec] and Christmas Lunch [6th Dec]. The Group will have a busy year developing Outreach Days throughout the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula and, hopefully, holding a new "Listening and Communications Skills" Course for its volunteers who are involved in the Carers Team. Dates for events are still being finalised but will be published in Newsletters and through the media as soon as possible. Interviews with members of the Group can be heard every third Friday on Radio 5EFM ("Forum" programme] at 1lam. The Drop-In Centre is open every Thursday and Friday at 2pm. Free Meditation Sessions are available every Thursday, and the Craft Group meets every Friday. New members always welcome.

MAJOR BOOST FOR AGED, DISABLED AND CARERS ACROSS THE HILLS, MALLEE AND SOUTHERN REGIONS

O

lder people in the Adelaide Hills, Mallee and Southern regions are among those to benefit from a significant funding boost to Home and Community Care (HACC) services, announced by Minister for Ageing and Disability, Jay Weatherill. Recurrent and one-off funding of nearly $892,000 will go to projects in these regions as part of a $13 million funding injection to be provided across South Australia, bringing total HACC funding to nearly $119 million. The HACC program is jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments and provides services such as delivered meals, personal care, home maintenance, social support and domestic assistance to older Australians, people with a disability and carers, in their own homes.

"This funding will assist key projects across the Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Murray Lands and Fleurieu Peninsula," Minister Weatherill said. "It will further boost HACC services to allow older South Australians, the disabled and their carers to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their local communities. "This funding enables us to support a range of projects in areas of growing demand while addressing the needs of both individuals and regional communities."

Some of the organisations to operate projects as a result of the 2005-06 HACC funding round include: • Alexandrina Council - $77,000 to assist older people living in the Milang-Clayton area.

• Kangaroo Island Health Service Inc $20,000 to expand a range of support services to older people, such as domestic assistance and transport.

• South Coast District Hospital Inc - $200,000 to expand support services such as domestic assistance, social support and home modifications to older people in the region.

Naturopathic Newsletter – Relaxation/Techniques

D

uring the p a s t couple of months I have seen several people visit my clinic who are showing signs of stress, both physical and emotional, that they are unaware of. Some of these people are unaware of the stresses in their lives even when it is explained and pointed out to them. For many, excessive stress is just a part of life and they do not know any other way to live their life. There is no doubt in my mind that both short term, and in particular, chronic stress will affect the physical functioning of the body. To what degree and which organs and bodily functions are affected depend on the facts and the individual.

Slowing the mind down is good.

When you begin to learn to slow down you may not feel anything

different. You may still feel low on energy and you may feel that nothing is changing for you.

The reality is that it takes time to learn to slow yourself down and to relax.

Slowing down your mind makes it possible for you to see more, places less stress and gives more energy for healing and running your body at optimal levels. I mentioned in a previous article that in my clinical experience over the past 1 4 ye a r s a nd t h a t o f metaphysical studies undertaken, I believe that nothing will drain the physical body more quickly than negative emotions. That does not have to mean negative thoughts; however, it includes emotions and thoughts that constantly go around in your mind. I often ask patient’s if they can sit still and have no thoughts constantly going on in their head. This means either one of two things or a myriad of thoughts that are constantly

going on. If this sounds like you then there is good news.

You Can Change.

Many people have never experienced peacefulness within themselves. There are many ways to achieve this so let me give you one. Firstly, if you are stressed then your body will most likely be tense.

I recommend a warm (not hot) bath for 20 minutes with a cup of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) as this is a muscle relaxant. I also suggest soft music, a candle or scented candle in the room with no other light. I also recommend using a few drops of a relaxing essential oil such as Lavender. There are also lovely relaxation blends that you can purchase. If you purchase a candle, essential oil or blend then make sure that it contains ‘pure’ essential oil and NOT fragrant oil. If this is new to you then this is what will probably happen for you. When you get in the bath with a candle

and soft music your mind will wander and wander and wander.

Let it! This is what it will do.

Just be an observer of your thoughts.

Let your mind wander, do not try to hide it or change your thoughts. It may wander for weeks or even months and that is natural.

Keep going, keep persevering – it is worth it! One day you will become aware that your mind was still and your mind was not wandering. It will probably just happen without you thinking about it. Give it a go. Give your body and your mind a treat. Give your self healing through this experience. Good Health to you all.

ur newest member, Lynn Trigg, was pinned by President Betty Brockbank and member welcomed her to out club. The guest speaker was Nick Yellan who is a member of the Postal Stationary and Postal History Society of Australia and also the Cartophyillic Association of Australia.

He explained that the postal stationary was anything sold at a Post Office which had prepaid postage, i.e. postcards, newspaper wrappers, lettercards and prepaid envelopes. In the early 1900’s postcards and letters were used regularly as a means of communication as there were few telephones and the written word was the main way people kept in touch, both around Adelaide and the suburbs, or when on holiday. The postage was 1 penny and there were two deliveries in the suburbs and three deliveries in the city each day. As the postman arrived with the mail, he would blow his whistle and the lady of the house often would be waiting, especially if she was expecting news of family or friends, and sometimes would have a short chat with the ‘postie’. Postal history is involved with the collection of the stamps and postmarks on prepaid envelopes, postcards etc. A philatelist is a collector of stamps. A cardologist or a cartophyllic collects postcards. Nick commented that the children who are interested in stamp collecting are often found to be ahead of their peers in history and geography, and that working with a stamp collection can be relaxing.

Nick’s forebears arrived in S.A. in 1839, and his interest in local history was apparent in the samples of postcards and postal stationary from his personal collection, which he brought to display, and he interspersed his talk with many snippets of history.

Many of his postcards were of jetties, paddle steamers on the Murray and historic buildings on the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, he explained that coastal shipping was an important form of transport in the early days when bullock and horse transport was so slow.

The members were very interested in his display and his talk and Nick joined some members for lunch at the conclusion of the meeting.

n January 10th and 11th Valda Bartlett, Marlene Stone, Bev Bowyer and Thelma Anderson played off the final of the State Fours against a team from the South East.

Initially they didn't intend to enter but when the first round was played at Yankalilla, the girls put in a team just to equalize the numbers. After playing off various semi finals they were successful, much to the delight of the club. Congratulation girls!

HMAS HOBART IN NEW BOOK

O

n the 13th April 1968, the guided-missile destroyer HMAS Hobart, operating in company with two US warships off Cap Lay in support of a US marine force, opened fire on a North Vietnamese truck and troop concentration just north of the Demilitarised Zone. Amazingly, in the confusion and frenzy of the bombardment, two marines who had been taken prisoner earlier, took the opportunity to escape their captors and rejoin their unit! Back with their own forces, they were able to give their leaders a detailed and vital first-hand report on the success of Hobart’s attack on the enemy position.

This and other small ‘snapshots’ of HMAS Hobart’s adventures while serving ‘on the gunline’ off the coast of Vietnam, form just a part of a new book by local Hallett Cove resident, Dave Rickard, called “Australia’s Navy – The First 100 Years”.

The old guided-missile destroyer that now lies as a dive site just off the coast of Normanville, takes her place with other ships in the book, which covers naval happenings that outline the broad range of operations the navy was involved in during the first 100 years following Federation. Presented as a condensed history, Rickard’s book is an almanac containing more than 365 entries by successive days of the year.

Readers will find a great deal of information is contained here, yet in quite a small space. In fact, this is essentially the Australian navy’s history in a ‘nutshell’ – an excellent repository

of interesting and intriguing facts about the Service that is tasked with a vital role in the defence of Australia’s shores.
