FUNDING BOOST FOR LOCAL VOLUNTEERS

T

he Member for Finniss, Michael Pengilly is pleased to announce that a number of organisations in the Finniss Electorate manned by volunteers have received funding through the Volunteer Support Fund 2007/2008.

Eight local groups have received $9340 under the latest funding round.

“This funding will assist the following groups in the implementation of their projects: • Great Southern FM Community Broadcasters Association $2,900 to air-condition the premises; • Kangaroo Island Friends of the Library $ 500 for display and storage areas; • Hope Cottage Museum, National Trust of SA $280 for a trolley jack and axle stands; • Encounter Centre Incorporated $1,200 for safety equipment; • National Trust of South Australia – Goolwa History Centre $ 800 to purchase a vacuum cleaner; • Yankalilla District Historical Museum $660 for equipment to assist the volunteers maintain the museum; • Yankalilla District Senior Citizens Club $1,500 for garden equipment (lawn mower, brush cutter & hedge clippers) • South Coast District Hospital $1,500 for a computer and associated software.

Mr Pengilly, paid credit to the work undertaken by volunteers throughout the Electorate saying: “Volunteers play a pivotal role in the local community and represent what our nation is all about.

“The grants announced today will fund a variety of equipment that will assist volunteers carryout their excellent work.

“The level of commitment by volunteers is commendable, and I congratulate everyone involved.”

Jelfs Group wishes all of our readers and contributors a safe and Happy Easter. If you are travelling on this weekend please take care.

Congratulations to Harry Marlow who turned 101 on the 26th of January, making him the oldest resident at the Yankalilla Aged Care Centre.

As we drive past the Yankalilla Youth Centre we can all see it is nearing completion. There will be a Bush Dance to help raise the funds required to fit out the centre. This night is being hosted by the Yankalilla Lions Club at the Inman Valley Memorial Hall. The community have been very generous in their support of this project so far, just a little bit more and the job will be done.

Mt Compass Food & Wine festival will be held on the 6th of April 10am - 4pm. There will be a return by popular demand of the ‘trout toss’ for those who wish to give it a go.

Celebrity Chef Manu Fieldel will be the guest chef at the Normanville Beach Café on a date

A community planning day is being held on Wednesday 9th April 7 - 9pm for the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival 2009. This will be held in the Councils Community Chambers.

Please support the local charities and groups over the Easter long weekend with this being a great opportunity to raise much needed funds. There will also be a number of exhibitions held throughout the district for the lovers of something different to do.

There is an Easter Bunny colouring-in competition being held. The winner will receive a big fluffy bunny and Texta products for their school. Conditions and entry forms can be obtained from the friendly staff and the Normanville Newsagency.

am surprised that the Yankalilla News prints letters like Mrs. Williams' "New Pharmacy" The letter is loaded with libellous acquisitions. For years I am dealing with pharmacies in Adelaide as well as Jelfs Pharmacy. They all give me an excellent service. Price wise for example, in December I bought some medicine in Normanville, same medicine in January in Adelaide 34% up on Jelfs. Mr. Jelfs is a highly regarded business man in the district, always supplying good service and advice. I am sure that this disgraceful letter will not have damaged his reputation.

seldom write to the paper, however, I feel this argument started by Mrs Williams warrants some comment. She can't be serious, can she, about getting medication at half the price in Adelaide? It was with some amusement that I read her tirade. I can honestly say that we have only ever found John Jelfs to be more than obliging & all his products competitively priced & never once have they issued generic medications without consent. John went out of his way to help and advise us on many issues. We don't see a need for a new pharmacy in Yankalilla, so we'll continue with John's and yes, we agree wholeheartedly with John about the cheap political game Mr Downer played for hopeful vote catching. There's something else that we also appreciate about the (Normanville) Newsagency and that is the extra hour that the Australia Post outlet is open. You can't get such service in Adelaide as we get out here. Thank you John Jelfs.

In response to the opinion Re Council Review December edition

s Secretary of the Fleurieu Horse & Pony Club I wish to assure dog owners we do have guidelines for beach use which include consideration of other beach users, only a trot past others users, the removal of manure in the car parking area and roads to the beach are all high on our list of priorities. I have circulated these guidelines to the Pony Club Assoc and Horse SA. All our club members also have flyers to leave on unknown cars with horse floats spelling out our code of conduct. Obviously along the beach it is much more difficult to remove manure. The saving grace being vegetable manure decomposes much more quickly than manure from a meat eater.

It is a privilege to be able to ride at any time on the beach, one we do not wish loose.

The kind consideration of dog owners to leash dogs not under effective control is appreciated, although this does not always happen. A few close calls by some of our riders have already been experienced. It would be nice to think we could all use the beach at what ever time with consideration to each other without bringing in

time constraints. As pointed out the beach from the jetty to Carrickalinga does not allow horses at all.

Horses on the beach are a tourist attraction in the area.

Many visitors take great pleasure in being able to say hello to horse and rider.

So I suggest we all take a breath, look at what we do have and how lucky we all are. Learning to share is a major accomplishment in life, one we should all work toward. Lets not let one or two bad apples from either end of the spectrum spoil the pot. I apologise for the rude behaviour of one rider and his companion who ever that may be. Not a member of our club I can assure you.

Dog Free Beach

am writing to express my concern over a comment made in the Times by Councillor John Hughes abut our Normanville Beach becoming ‘dog free’.

I have walked the beach now for 20 years twice a day with my dogs and have not had any altercation with other pets or owners.

After a serious accident, my doctor recommended that I get our and exercise, and therefore bought my first dog and I have had so much pleasure and company with many people and their pets over the years. So many people enjoy not only the exercise but the interaction with other people at the beach/park.

On the whole, our beach is not populated apart from the few weeks over the holiday period and it would seem a pity that you would condemn us and our dogs to a ‘dog free beach’.

Please consider my thoughts and those of other dog owners on this matter.

note with some interest the comment by Cr John Hughes regarding dogs on beaches (as reported in The Times, January 24, 2008, p. 3). It would appear from the article that the current review on the use of local beaches was prompted by a single complaint regarding a fracas between a dog and a horse on the beach. If the writer of the article is to be believed then it seems rather a waste of Council resources to be undertaking such a lengthy review based on a single complaint - not to mention the angst it seems to be creating amongst dog owners in the community!

Cr Hughes would make all beaches in the entire Council area completely dog-free and has clearly not thought through the ramifications of his suggestion.

There are a number of points which need to be considered when deciding what access should be provided for dogs on beaches in the Yankalilla Council area.

There are very few areas, other than the beach, where one can exercise a dog off-lead. Many active (and even not-so-active) dogs need an area to run around which is safe and free from traffic. Suburban back yards are rarely big enough to provide even small dogs with the exercise they require for a healthy life. Having active dogs deprived of their chance to run around freely will almost certainly create other problems such as barking and roaming dogs.

For 95% of the year, the beach is almost deserted, so setting aside a reasonable area of the beach for exercising dogs off-lead will not greatly affect other beach users. Since the end of the school holidays, the beach has had few visitors, so having dogs off-lead would not have caused problems for anyone using the beach, particularly if dog owners do the right thing and control their animals in the presence of other users. We generally exercise our dog on the beach in the early morning or evening and 4 nights out of 5 over the past few weeks the beach has been totally deserted during the time we were there.

During the school holidays and on long weekends there has been an increase in the number of dogdroppings and dogs off-lead close to the jetty and other restricted areas. In the main, these probems are caused by visitors who either seem to ignore the regulations or

are unaware of them. When they are pointed out to people they will generally do the right thing and restrain their animals, but there will always be a few who ignore any regulations and treat the beach like their own little fiefdom where they can do what they like regardless of other users and restrictions. Making a beach dog-free will not deter these types of users, but will affect the responsible dog-owner who sees the use of the beach as a privilege and restrains their dog when needed.

A judicious administration of the regulations, adequate signage (including a clear indication of where the restricted zones start and finish) will do far more to ensure that the beach can be enjoyed by all than simply having a blanket ban on the use of the beach by all dog and horse owners. We all pay our rates, so deserve to have the use of these areas for our pleasure and recreation. Placing a ban on dogs on the beach will simply serve to create problems elsewhere and increase the number of complaints of barking and nuisance dogs to Council. And lets not forget that one of the attractions of the local caravan park is that it allows owners to bring their dogs which can be exercised on the beach. Banning dogs and horses on the beach will also affect local business, so one can only hope that Council does the right thing with the appropriate administration of the existing regularions, rather than putting in place new and draconian measures to satisfy the demands a vocal minority who would ban dogs altogether if they had their way.

Lost Wallet

arly last month I took a ride on my motorbike and, reaching Strathalbyn, found I had lost my wallet out of my not zipped-up pocket! Drama & despair as, apart from my money, it contained all my documents i.e. driving licence, medicare card, RAA card etc. I was already planning on the return trip how to go about getting duplicates, but was surprised and delighted when arriving back to find that a kind soul had found the wallet and already handed it in at the Normanville Police Station. Being next door to our business, Paul had returned it to my wife! I sincerely wish to thank the person who found it and offer her, by way of a little thank you, coffee & cake at the Colombia Coffee House - right next door to the Police Station.

I would also like to thank Joseph Gonzalez, who was with me from the very start through thick and thin in getting the club started, contributing the design and club logo and helping get the club known through the Yankalilla Regional News. I would also like to thank Tony Piatnicki, Craig Simpson and Joseph Gonzalez for being the start of the Senior team, myself included. The four of us trained months together before enough players were eventually gained to form a team. Due to injury the four of us couldn't finish the whole season. This brings me to make an apology to these players as being fully paid up in subs and or contributing in some way to the club.

The Seniors coach, Jamie Burton, took it upon himself not to invite any of these players to the Senior Trophy night.

Medals had been made for 3 of the 4 players aforementioned, and approved at committee level, so four months later, where are they?

I would like to clear up a few things in regards to seniors on comments made to me by other senior players and supporters. Firstly, the committee at the request of Senior Coach Jamie Burton

purchased three trophies to be awarded to senior players. Three weeks after already getting trophies made, Senior Coach Jamie Burton changed his mind saying "the Seniors only wanted medals and weren't interested in individual trophies." (Contrary to what was said to me, i.e. " why weren't trophies for Best and Fairest etc given out".)

Secondly, on a personal level, I offered to play again when Senior Coach Jamie Burton said he didn't have a full squad for the last game (2 weeks before hand).

I assumed he had managed to get a full squad together for the last game, as he did not take up my offer. When I came to watch the Seniors final game, they were short a full team. I was asked to referee the game, when I could have played. So to the Senior players that verbally abused me on the park and called me a quitter etc., I say get your facts straight, your Senior Coach has a personal prejudice against me.

Thirdly, yes, I am aware that Jamie Burton was assassinating my character at Junior games, at every opportunity.

When opposition coaches say " you should hear what that guy has been saying about you". It's all a bit sad really if you act and conduct yourself in that manner when he was supposedly Junior Co-coordinator. A poor decision on my part in creating that position.

Fourthly, I received news that Frank Azzopardi has been to this years committee meetings and voiced what was wrong with the club last year. Well, Frank, the club was successful in its inaugural year with the Juniors doing extremely well, coming third overall in the league, considering most had never played soccer before. The Seniors came second in their division, after having major injury woes and an ever shortening player list. This sounds like a fantastic effort for the year, for a new club. There are many issues regarding Franks departure from the club, in its infancy, which will not be raised in this forum.

In finishing I know the club has gained two good quality recruits on the committee in Mark Daws and Greg Air. I hope that parents, supporters and sponsors help and support these two members, as it is hard running a club.

My family and I are moving back north due to career advancement and I will be taking up a new coaching position and

y wife and myself henpecked Percy, residents of a nearly extinct Carrickalin ga b each d wellers association are in a very grave situation.

Our relatives have been harassed and hunted to extinction in the last few decades. We were quite a numerous spectacle on these beaches in times past, but of late, due to housing and population growth etc, mans best friend has become our worst nightmare. Only the other day my ageing wife “Prissy Plover” was pursued yet again, almost the entire length of Carrickalinga north beach, by a quarry seeking Labrador!

Unlike Sammy seagull, we cannot fly up high quickly to evade our bird seeking callers, you rewarding call good dog etc, due to our smaller wing span. To make things worse, this hunting ritual is applauded and promoted by some quadrupled carnivores owners! These beaches are our only habitat, we were hatched here aeons before your mongrels began impulsively defecating on our sandy lawn. Our endemic environment is not the type that your pooches have originated from and should be make out of bounds respectively. The feel ?? Sign ;- Under eff ective control”, is open to interpretation and a convenient compromise of works: - try dog exclusion zone instead. My small vestigial, tottering feathered family, only hope that some high paid council dog lobbyist will consider our plight.

Would they construct an endemic canine oval, or park, fenced off, free to run and fight, defecating within its confines!

Failing all this, while your human offspring longingly peer through the glass cases, at the ‘dime a dozen - pet puppy dog for sale” displays, our doomed legacy will be gathering dust, stuffed in a glass case of the Adelaide Museums extinct Ornithological display!

nnette Forrest of ‘Sunnybank’ and Bill McGrath give our most sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who saved our farm from the fire in the paddocks and windbreaks, halting it before it reached our hay barn, woolshed and homestead. Among all, we are grateful to the fire spotters/ reporters Donna Cole and Chris Olsen for their quick detection of the fire and reporting it. Most grateful for the quick response of the Normanville Police, and

the fire trucks and crews from Cape Jervis, Rapid Bay, Parawa, Taliska, Deep Creek Conservation Park; and the Southern Fleurieu CFS water tanker.

This note hardly describes our gratitude for your having saved this part of early pioneer heritage and present-day beauty.

Solar Hot Water

T

he Jan/Feb issue contained a letter re. alternative energy resources. I should like to inform anyone thinking about installing solar hot water panels that they work extremely well. We have a small house with an accessible northfacing roof so we had a single panel installed last October, partly to do our bit for the environment & partly to save costs. On our first power bill after the installation, only 2 months later, there was a noticeable reduction in the cost for heating water. We look forward to receiving the next bill to see how much we have saved over the hot months - it should be an appreciable difference we think.

Why Pigs should not die

ear Yankalilla News Readers, My name is Zoe and I love pigs, I have a pig room with over 30 figurines, teddies and over 35 posters of pigs… anyway I think pigs should not die for a number of reasons; they are great companions and ‘mates.’ When I’m older I want to start a pig business, anyway what if I can’t start my business because all the pigs are dead! I know you pig farmers love your pigs, but I just wish that they didn’t die. I don’t eat bacon, ham or pork and I live my life just fine, why can’t every one make that adjustment. And it’s not just pigs that I’m sad about, I’m sad about cows, chickens, sheep but I think the pig family is most at risk. Because also the wild pigs are at risk, they are hunt ed for a so called ‘sport’, It’s really unbelievable! I’m sorry if I’m making to much of a deal about it, But some times I can’t sleep at night because of this subject. Look at the image that I found on the internet when I typed ‘wild boar’ on the image’s at Google, it’s just terrible. I not saying for every one to change but I just wishing that some people would just do their bit…thankyou Zoe

YANKALILLA YOUTH & COMMUNITY CENTRE

his is just a short account describing where we stand with this project.

It is certainly very rewarding for those who have been involved with it from its initiation almost 5 years ago to see the walls and roof up and a handsome building the result. However, "Handsome is as handsome does" and the real reward will be the benefit which the community derives from its use after it is completed. Over $600,000 had to be guaranteed to build the Centre and this had to be in place before even the foundations were laid. In addition to the building this covers the second fit, the flooring, plumbing, painting, tiling, electrical installations, landscaping, etc. It does not cover equipping the kitchen to industrial standards nor some furniture and equipment above what has already been donated. The Planning and Fundraising Committees have initiated an equipment fund administered and invested by the Yankalilla Lions Club. The fund was given a great start by a donation of $6,000 from the Frank and Hilda Perry Trust and a further $2,100 from the Southwest Fleurieu Uniting Churches, proceeds from the 2007 Harvest Tea, and is steadily making progress towards a primary target of $20,000. The main fundraising projects are the Founding Memberships, Family $100 and Corporate $500, and an entertainment night (put Saturday May 10 in your diaries) master-minded by Ron Tremaine, leaflets advertising the event will be posted shortly. The Inman Valley Progress Association is very generously donating the proceeds of its next Bush Dance to be held on 12 April to the Equipment Fund. All donors, Grant sources and Founding Members will be recorded on Honour Boards mounted within the Centre. Some of the equipment still to be obtained for the Centre is as follows:P A and Mixing Board - sound and lights, chairs, trestle tables and table tennis table, basketball ring, piano, commercial fridge, freezer and dishwasher, pots and pans & food storage containers. Some of these can be second-hand and some cannot. If you would like to contribute to these needs donations can be made to Yankalilla Lions Club, marked Yankalilla Youth and Community Centre Equipment Fund, Box 184, Yankalilla, 5203. Founding Membership Forms can be obtained from the Lions Bingo Stall on a Saturday morning, from the Normanville Post office or from the Council Office in Yankalilla.

To return to the first paragraph. There are many exciting ideas about how the building will be utilised. The building will have a strong focus on young people and also be available for the wider community.

The YYCC will be a venue for:*Young people to develop social activities such as monthly movie nights and a new revitalised home for The Edge. * Youth Community Groups e.g. Youth Advisory Committee * Youth & Community Information Service * Meeting place for Community Groups * Resource Centre for volunteers through information services, access to community office, volunteer notice board etc. * Venue for service providers * Venue for TAFE or other registered Training Organisations to deliver courses * Indoor and outdoor theatre and music performances Clare Taylor, the Community Development Officer, Ulus Fuat, the Youth Development Officer and Gary Crook, the Council Transport Coordinator will be located in the Offices of the Centre and along with volunteers will provide day to day staffing. Eventually it will be up to the community to provide further ideas for utilisation of the Centre and ensure that it is well utilised.

Fleurieu Quilters

he Fleurieu Quilters annual charity quilting bee took place on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of January at the Sanders Hall in Yankalilla.

Over three very warm days the local Threads group was joined by quilters from a number of groups from the Fleurieu peninsular, with everyone working together to produce about seventeen quilts so far.

Most of these quilts will go to Port

Youth, a hostel for homeless youngsters.

We received donations of fabric, complete quilts, quilt tops and batting and are very grateful for these and to everyone who helped in any way.

Inaugural Fleurieu Campdraft

he Inau gura l Fl euri eu Campdraft was held at Normanville on the Fleurieu Peninsula on the 19th and 20th January, in a region better known for its fine foods, wine and picturesque coastline. This campdraft was able to run due to the commitment, enthusiasm and shear determination of a small group of people.

Originally the draft was part of the Yankalilla Rodeo to be held at the Yankalilla Showgrounds, when the Rodeo got cancelled and the Draft could no longer be held at the showgrounds a new venue had to be found. We are all very grateful to John Croser who allowed us the use his property at Normanville. The committee and all the tireless helpers proceeded to transform a bare paddock into a “Campdraft by the Sea”. Not only was the new venue a challenge the Committee also went through a very difficult process of obtaining a permit from PIRSA to run this draft, which unfortunately restricted entries to SA competitors only, hopefully next year we will see the end of EI restrictions and some Easterners make trip to the seaside town of Normanville.

Competition commenced Saturday with an advertised 8am start and true to our words at 1 minute past eight the Fleurieu Draft was off and running. Rosie Vincent judged the KA & LM Pridham Maiden which saw Adam Litchfield on the very handy Saphire steal the blue ribbon after a run off with Cory Ferguson on Woody for first place. Alistair Bayley on Hamilton Park Warrigal was a close third with 151 followed by Les Godfrey on Opal with 103, Bevan Roberts on Scamp with 98, and sixth Graeme Kempe with E.W. Opium and 97. Competitors giving the Magnus Camp the thumbs up.

Grant Waterman took over the judging for the remainder of the day.

The Pro-Stock Junior draft was a family affair with Ben McEwin on Baily placing first with a score of 18 followed by Rudi McEwin on

Nuthing with a score of 17. The Mitavite Novice went to Bevan Roberts on Sam with a score of 157, following just one point behind for second was Peter Moroney on Jarman with 156. Third went to Lindsay Cadzow on Cody with 150, Malcolm Mitchell and JoeBloe scored 148 followed by Bridie Ferguson on Desert Star with 139 and sixth went to Jim Willoughby on Crewman with a score of 136. Bridie Ferguson on Desert Star had 2 great runs to win the Pt Noarlunga Open with 164, Bevan Roberts on Jackson was only 3 points behind on 161, with third going to David Bayley on Snappy Tom with 160. The final three places went to Vic Walter on Minstril with 156, Bill Willoughby on Casper with 106 and Peter Moroney on Jarman w i t h 1 0 1 .

Sunday saw a 8.30am Start. Rosie Vincent was back in the saddle judging the Magnus Maiden won by Lachlan Johnson on Sara with a score of 157. Bridie Ferguson on Bouquet and Les Godfrey on Clancy shared second with 154. Fourth went to Kristina Martin on Remy with 152 followed by Bill Willoughby on Aviator with 105. Sixth was a shared placing again with both Craig Love on Coby and Adam Litchfield on Bud with 101.

Bevan Roberts then gave a short demonstration, which saw the juniors and juveniles and some first time drafters, get some one-on-one tuition. This was well received by those that took place as well as the many spectators who dropped in to see what all the commotion was about.

Grant Waterman then continued proceedings and the LP Herbig Junior draft was again a family show, but in reverse, Rudi McEwin on Nuthing with a score of 19 was to beat Bens two runs with Whiskey on 17 and Bailey with 17. Bevan Roberts took out the Novice on Scamp with a score 149, second went to Steve Hoddle on Redlee with 148, followed by Kristina Martin on Remy with 138.

Adam Litchfield on Lightning came in fourth with 104 followed by Les Godfrey on Clancy with 102 and Bill Willoughby on Casper with 99. The final event was the Pt Noarlunga Hotel Open which went to Bevan Roberts on Jackson with a score of 140, Vic Walter on Comedian came in second with 138, followed by Peter Moroney on Jarman with 136. Corey Ferguson scored 93 on Slipper and Andrew Clarke came in fifth on Saphire with a score of 60. The committee would like to thank the cattle donors who donated some great running cattle for the weekend, along with everyone who donated money, time and/or facilities. The Committee was astounded at the support received by the local and not so local businesses.

unday 24th February saw the Yank News Team enjoying lunch and live music at the Normanville Beach Café. Fine food and wine overlooking the Normanville Beach with music by trio ‘Jus-Fa-Fun’, playing hits from the Shadows, Beatles, Eagles, Neil Diamond and more was a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

etty Food Store is soon to turn 2 years old and proudly last November was awarded a commendation in the Australia Post Small Business category of the SA Great Awards. Peta, Stephen and the Jetty staff are thrilled with this recognition in such a significant award category after only 18 months of trade.

The store focuses on ‘smart’ take-away; take home meals ready to go, sweet treats and espresso, smallgoods and dairy, fresh meat and local seafood, fruit and vegetables, with an emphasis on ‘100km range’, regional and pesticide free produce. SKETCH BLOCK GALLERY 88 and YANKALILLA ART GROUP Yankalilla Art Group Hi, everyone. We are now at the beginning of a new year of creativity. It was good to welcome a new tutor to our list, Sandra Earle-Russo. Her words to me were, ‘I enjoy having fun with colour, textures and shapes.’ I believe this is exactly what happened at our first session of mixed media. Unfortunately I missed out on this session, but a request was made for a further visit from her at a later date, this will give me an opportunity for new experiences and ideas. I was delighted with the large attendance which including new members and wish to sincerely thank Una Bradshaw for taking over the organization of the session in my absence.

Acoustic nights – Every third Saturday evening at the grounds we have an acoustic evening, music, BBQ, curry, Bar, bonfire (when permissible). This is a show society fundraiser, raising funds for a new much needed amenities block. Come along and listen to some great performers in a relaxed atmosphere.

Toilet block extension – We are currently in the process of raising money to upgrade the toilet block to include a disabled facility, baby change room and showers. We are in need of a volunteer overseer to work on the project, maybe a retired builder or someone with a little time to get the project in order and under way.

Ena Harvey Co-ordinator Gallery 88 It only seems like yesterday that we were setting up the January professional art exhibition and now Sue Bean’s lovely February exhibition has come and gone. Both exhibitions have been well attended by holiday visitors and locals alike.

It is always pleasing to note the number of very positive comments about the high quality of work on display in gallery 88 and, through telephone enquiries, how we have become known for that quality well outside our immediate area. This knowledge is most encouraging for the gallery members. gallery 88 is a ‘living creature’, it is for ever re-inventing itself with new works of all descriptions, ever fresh and inviting. This prevents us, we hope, from becoming just a ‘picture museum.’

Most months, in the foyer, there will be displays of both new and old works by individual members.

Women with Fibre

nnouncing the inaugural Exhibition of Collective Works from The South Coast Women Textile Multimedia Artists.

It is with great excitement and trepidation that we launch into our first exhibition, titled –‘MIX IT UP MEDIA’. The exhibition will be held over Easter starting Friday 21st thru Monday 24th March 9:30am till 4pm, in the Supper Hall of the Yankalilla Agricultural grounds, which is located on the corner of Main South and Jervois Roads between the townships of Yankalilla and Normanville.

The idea of presenting our work in an exhibition came from a member of the Yankalilla Women with Fibre who get together every Monday, to create ‘anything they like’, using and

experimenting with textiles and more, to see how far the limits can be taken, discovering on the way that there are no limits.

After enjoying a successful Open Studio Day during the Leafy Sea Dragon festival and discovering the amount of interest in the work produced, the idea of holding an exhibition evolved.

There are over 12 artists showcasing original multimedia art, including textile art, art quilts, jewellery, paintings, wall hangings, wearable art, basketry, spiritual art, felting, fabrications and much more.

eptiles of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges - On January 18th over 50 people were present at the Council Chambers to listen to a presentation by Tim Milne of the Nature Conservation Society of South Australia on Reptiles of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges. Tim spoke about the types of reptiles found in our region, their habitats and habits. Did you know that if you shift a lizard to a new location it will make every effort to find its way back to its home range. Tim brought with him a number of live exhibits, all of which were on their best behaviour as they were passed around the audience.

Sustainable Seafood Day – Tuesday March 4th has been declared Sustainable Seafood Day – a day when Australian seafood eaters are encouraged to become informed about making more sustainable seafood choices.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society has released a Sustainable Seafood Wallet Guide and a Sustainable Fish Finder. These publications provide a wealth of information including a listing of fish and seafood species which are overfished and should be

avoided and recommends that seafood lovers choose Australian Seafood, avoid imported seafood and avoid fish species which are long-lived or slow growing and those which are a deep sea species. Copies of the guides are available from the Normanville Natural Resource Centre.

Hooded Plovers – you may have noted some articles on Hooded Plovers in the local press recently. Hooded Plovers have been found nesting and rearing young on the beaches at Normanville and Carrickalinga.

However, their numbers are declining due to human disturbance. If you are interested in learning more about the Hooded Plover, a small shorebird endemic to the sandy surf beaches of southern Australia come in to the centre and borrow a short DVD called The Hood Life which was produced by Master of Natural History Film Making student Eddie Powell, Flinders University Screen Studies & Zoos SA. The film provides information on the natural habitat of Hooded Plovers and gives viewers the skills to identify Hooded Plovers and their nests.

Fleurieu Regional Development have received some extra funding from the Australian Government to run a Springboard business development group. Springboard brings together about 12 to 15 businesses who are established and looking to grow, then takes them through a process of peer to peer learning which explores most aspects of their business. It will likely be run out of Victor Harbor by Mark Heinrich.

Our treasurer Shirley reported on our successful fundraisers - namely the Classic Car Rally and the Nippers Surf Lifesaving Carnival. We were very pleased to be able to help these organisations in this way.

SACWA State Council to be held in the country at Murray Bridge this year on 12th and 13th March - unfortunately our delegate or any other members won’t be able to attend due to other commitments.

Our flower competition was judged by Joyce Hall and Margaret Schubert won first prize, Maureen Stone second and Merna Brumby third.

Secretary Cathy Reid had a birthday in February along with Irene Gibson and Joyce Hall.

Flowers were presented to these ladies and happy birthday was sung.

Our next meeting is on March 5th at 1.30pm in our rooms at Bungala Street. We will have Shirley Frawley the SACWA State Property Officer and archivist attending, come and share information with us.

The Camp took place at beautiful Encounter Bay. We set up camp at the Caravan Park and the students assembled their tents. Eventually after a bit of reorganising and noise we had the tents organised and the students had some time to enjoy their new homes for the next couple of days. The students spent their time during the day participation in Aquatics. The activities varied from Sailing, Kayaking, Surfing, Body boarding and Snorkelling. We were very fortunate to have some wonderful weather, which made the water sports seem much more appealing. It was great to see the students out there giving things a go, and working well in teams situations. On one of the days the students got to sneak in a session at Greenhills Adventure Park. The nights at camp were filled with fun games, night walks, yummy meals, lots of talking and just a couple of late nights.

We all had a great time and a big thank you to all individuals involved in making this camp possible for the students of Yankalilla Area School.

FROM LAKES TO LOCHS

T

oo soon we departed the Lakes District aboard our trusty charabanc headed for Glasgow.

Historically, it’s origins stretched back some two thousand years, starting as a small salmon-fishing village on the River Clyde.

From its beginnings, this city founded by a Christian missionary became a major religious centre. It’s religious founder’s (St Mungo) original church was destroyed by wars that devastated the country after Mungo’s death. Today the present cathedral can be dated from the 12th century and, over the years has been added to.

In 1451 Glasgow became known as a University City, the original building being situated in the High Street of the city, but, was moved to its present site in the West End in 1870.

What a plethora of historic events this city can boast!

Think of names of patriots like William Wallace (‘Braveheart’).

Two centuries later the battle for control of the Crown of Scotland then in the possession

of baby Mary Queen of Scots, Industrially speaking, the existence of vast deposits of coal and iron ore in this area helped to shape the next two hundred years of Glasgow’s history.

The word ’Clyde’ from the River Clyde was synonymous with reliability and quality whether the products were locomotives or luxury passenger ships, however these productions gradually declined, the consequence being reductions in the throngs of workers in the shipbuilding industry.

As far as tourism is concerned, Glasgow has flourished both locally and internationally and beckons tourists from all over the world.

The art treasures are world renowned and most of the city’s museums and galleries offer free entrance to view the treasures.

Although time did not allow us to partake of all the pleasures and sights that Glasgow had to offer, there is no doubt the Glaswegians offer an unique

friendliness and hospitality that instils in the visitor a welcome not to be forgotten in a hurry.

We had a short, but interesting trip through Glasgow to our accommodation for the night right alongside the airport. The room was nothing out of the ordinary but, we didn’t care overmuch as we were tired, time for a bite of tea, repacking of our cases and, to bed as it was to be an early departure the following morning.

Early the next morning, breakfast dealt with, we left Glasgow at about 8.30am, destination Edinburgh via Loch Loman, Aberfoyle, Douane, Stirling, Queen Elizabeth Forest Park past Loch Eam. There was snow on Ben Loman and mountains further north. For some of us coming from the southernmost part of a southern continent it was our first sight of real snow. We had to take some photos .

On our way to Edinburgh, we stopped off at the Aberfoyle Woollen Mill for coffee and a good browse, with my browsing costing me the price of yet

another hat. (what is this fetish with me and hats?) the respite being welcome as the day had turned out to be very cold and windy and, we were looking forward to seeing what our next lot of accommodation was to be..

Throughout all of our trips, we would have one meal supplied but, then other times we had to provide our own night meals.

This was one of those occasions and, luckily the hotel was next door to a supermarket where we purchased that night’s repast of rolls and cheese and, lemons for me as I had picked up a rotten cold, so back to the old fashioned, tried and true remedy of hot lemon drink with honey.

Had tea, then showers for both of us and into bed.

Our next day was to be ‘fullon’. However, once again I will temporarily leave this narrative until the next episode when I will share with you the sights, sounds and impressions of Edinburgh.

he Christian Church has moved into the season of Lent. It probably means nothing to people outside Church and I’m sure they find it strange to imagine people spending five weeks fasting, giving alms and praying. It sounds very dreary. It sounds very threatening.

However, the whole purpose of Lent is not to make us depressed, but to remind us of our humanity and our mortality. That is the focus of the little ceremony we go through on Ash Wednesday— the first day of Lent. At that service the worshippers are marked with a cross of ash on their foreheads. The ash is given as a sign of our mortality and sorrow for the mistakes we have made. These ashes are made by burning palm crosses from Palm Sunday the previous year. The ash is all that remains. It is the bare minimum, the stark essentials. In that ash we have an image of ourselves reduced to the bare essentials. Yes, it’s a reminder of our death and the loss of our vitality and usefulness. But it’s really a reality check. We remind ourselves that, despite our best efforts to remain young and beautiful, our bodies will be reduced to dust.

In a very touching way we are reminded of our humanity with all its faults and this is the first step towards spiritual growth and dependence on God. That alone tells us that Lent is all about growth. It is a time when we use some spiritual disciplines to help us grow closer to God. So Lent can be a time for us when the person God created us to be can begin to take root and blossom, just as plants do in springtime.

Most people hear the word ‘fast’ and think that it is related to giving up food, or at least some kinds of food. The idea has been

trivialized by people saying that they are giving up chocolate for Lent or something just as silly. That’s not a real challenge!

There is a way we can fast—and it’s not only for Christians. There is a way for us all to improve ourselves and our relationships with others. It is challenging. It will lead us to give up things which lessen our lives and diminish us as human beings. Surely we can all do with a dose of that!!

We can involve ourselves in a spiritual fast. Here are a few examples we can try each day: Give up crude words; use words that uplift.

Give up worry; learn to trust.

Give up on hostility; try non-violence.

Give up suspicion; seek the truth.

Give up idle gossip; try being silent.

Give up anger; take up patience.

There are many negative aspects in our lives that we can ‘give up’.

We can replace them with the opposite and positive aspect. Try them day by day and watch yourself change! You will become a ‘better’ person. We can all improve.

Ned Kelly, the infamous Australian bushranger, said to the judge, when sentenced to the gallows, ‘We will soon meet in a fairer court … and I will see you there.’

A mother, who was dying prematurely of a terminal disease, in her closing moments, said to her daughter, ‘I only wish I could come back and tell you what’s on the other side.’

What’s there?

Nothing has tantalised human minds more than ‘what’s on the other side.’ Perceptions of ‘the other side’ tend to influence this side.

What do you do when a flash of lights warns of a speed camera ahead? My foot quickly glides from the accelerator to the brake. Accountability increases responsibility.

What happens to the tyrants of this world? Do those who torture and abuse the innocent simply retire to the dust?

An ancient thinker wrestled with this problem. He said, ‘As it is with the good man, so with the sinner; -- This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all.’ From Ecclesiastes 9:1-4

A big challenge in life is coping with those who would tear us apart. Human nature is retaliatory. But, the dangerous side of retaliation is that the retaliated retaliate and hatred grows.

While Jesus hung on the cross mockers insulted him. With rage in their faces they said, ‘Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God! ... Let the King of Israel now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.’ ‘He saved others, himself he could not save.’

The Bible says, ‘When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.’ 1 Peter 2:23

The words of Jesus from the cross give hope.

To the repentant thief he said: ‘Verily, I say to you, This day you will be with me in Paradise.’

The man on the cross next to Jesus was no loyal saint with a long record of faithfully serving God. These were words to a sinner who, in his last moments, called out to Jesus, ‘Lord, remember me.’ If Jesus can save that man in his final moments he can save you and me.

Jesus didn’t elaborate on Paradise. He simply said, ‘You will be with me.’

To the woman who said, ‘I only wish I could come back and tell you what’s on the other side.’

We can say, ‘Some one has come back. He died, was buried - and on the third day rose from the dead, and has said, ‘Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he who lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hades and death.’ Rev 1:17-18

Our last words Last words are not always the best words – simply because we cannot know for sure when our last words will be.

Who wants to leave this life with contentious words, angry words, bitter words or bad words? The Bible says, ‘Let your speech be always with grace ...’

A local layman, preaching in the Yilki Uniting Church, had finished his sermon, picked up his hymnbook and read the first line of the closing hymn. He then slumped back into his seat and died. But, how interesting were the words that he read from the hymn, ‘I heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and rest.’

ur first guest speaker for this year was Christine Howard from the Commonwealth Bank, who spoke about Credit/Debit Card fraud. Christine gave us some tips on how to look after our cards, how to use them safely, how to avoid fraud, and what to do when fraud occurs. Our bank/credit society also has a role in protecting us from fraud.

When new cards and PIN numbers are applied for they are sent separately, the PIN numbers generated by the bank's computer, at random. Banks encourage customers to choose their own numbers, from four up to twelve digits, even words can be used. Selecting your own

PIN allows you to choose numbers you'll never forget (birthdays, etc.).

If PIN numbers are difficult to memorise, don't write them down in an easily broken code such as Penelope, Iris, Norm. Don't write the PIN number on the back of a card and keep it in a pocket; you may forget it's there when you send your jacket to the dry cleaners!. Don't let your card out of your hand. Always swipe it yourself; this prevents the merchant from swiping your card in another device that will read it.

Always accompany 'helpful' staff to the machine. Don't allow anyone to take your card, and don't leave it with the receptionist, (e.g.at a motel).

Bible Prophecy Expounded – know your Bible.

I

n last months Issue reference was made to the dream that troubled Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon. I thought it was a pity to leave it unexplained.

Over a series of months we will exp lain this r e mar kab le prophecy presented in the Bible so long ago.

Daniel’s bible prophecies foretell World Destiny!

During the aggressive expansion of the Babylonian Empire a young Jewish prophet by the name of Daniel was captured by King Nebuchadnezzars’ armies at Jerusalem and taken to Babylon for indoctrination in Babylon’s culture and worship.

Daniel renowned for his wisdom was approached by the King to provide an interpretation of a strange nightmare that had troubled him. The dream was of an immense image warrior described in Daniel Chapter 2:32 as having “a head of fine gold, his breast and arms of silver, his belly and thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay” As this immense image of menacing aspect stood upon the feet of composite iron and clay, a stone smashed into the feet bringing the whole image down and proceeded to grind all of its metals to powder and then expanding itself into immense proportions, so as too fill the whole earth. The King was intrigued by the dream and even more so as Daniel proceeded to unfold its meaning; the world’s destiny for the next 3500 years.

Daniel prefaced his remarks by saying in verse 28 : “there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days” This biblical term “latter days” is used to describe the last troubled years of man’s political stewardship of the globe.

So Daniel announced to the King that he, that is the

Kingdom of Babylon was represented by the ‘head of gold’. After his time would another three empires successively rise to world dominion described in the following way in verse 39 “and after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things….”

The Kingdom represented by the breast and arms of silver would topple the Babylonian kingdom and rule over an expanded territory. This came to pass as history has since testified when the Medes and Persians, (the two silver arms) joined forces to conquer Babylon, with Darius the Mede and Cyrus the Persian sharing the throne (BC 542 – 334).

Daniel proceeded to tell his captivated audience that a third world power would supersede

Medo-Persia being represented by the brass belly and thighs. So it was, that Alexander the Great, in a series of brilliant military campaigns assumed world leadership, bringing in the era of the Grecian Empire.(BC 33467) The fact that this third empire was represented by brass, also rings true with history, for its soldiers were described as the ‘brazen coated’ Greeks.

In these words and what follows in the Book of Daniel, there is a remarkable forecast of the march of history down to our day and beyond. We will continue this next month. Tree Talk GARNET KELLY PARK IN MEMORY OF A LOST SON

H

ave you ever driven past or spent time to visit Garnet Kelly Park? On Williss Drive at Lady Bay the park is a pleasant spot to spend a few quiet moments. Planted with a mixture of native and exotic trees is now a pleasant stopping place for both travellers and locals alike. However, it would not have always been as peaceful as it is nowadays, as the corner would have been an important entrance and exit for travellers making their way along the old road to Delamere, Rapid Bay and beyond. The old road was said to be notoriously difficult to travel as it originally skirted around behind the hills and was apparently very rough and almost impassable. What a welcome sight this little clearing with its large gums and river must have been. Although the plaque giving information about this area has been removed, the council has kept the park well maintained, leaving a lasting

memorial to Garnet Kelly who is described in Roy Williams’ book ‘To Find the Way’ as follows… “Garnet Kelly was born at Bald Hills in 1883. He farmed Anacotilla, Second Valley in partnership with his father and was a councillor of the Rapid Bay District Council.

He had a progressive and innovative outlook and was early to use wire netting for control of rabbits which were a serious problem at the time. He also irrigated from the Anacotilla creek, using the water to power a chaff-cutter and grindstone. He planned an irrigations system for Crosers at Rapid Bay. He bequeathed a sum of money to the District Council, the interest from which is said to be perpetually used on the planting of trees for the beautification of the district”.

Garnet Kelly didn’t return home from the First World War as he was killed in action in France.

here is a small grove of trees (red flowering gums and a Norfolk Island pine) just down from the old cottage on the corner of Williss Drive and Main South Road Normanville. A bronze plaque is placed among these trees. This plaque and the trees are a memorial to a sailor who drowned locally in 1941. The inscription on the plaque readsTREES CONRAD – A tribute of love in memory of my dear son the late O.L. Conrad RAN who lost his life in the sea at Normanville.

“Mother” There seems to be very little known about this family whether they were local or not, or if it was just an

FLEURIEU SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCERS HANG UP THEIR SHOES

fter 21 years teaching Scottish Country Dancing in Yankalilla, Margaret Campbell has called it a day. The dancers in the class were very sad Margaret was retiring. No one was willing to take over the class so we had to close.

We had a lovely evening of Dancing in November on our last night. We were joined by dancers

from other branches, some as far a field as Elizabeth. Margaret was given a gift and thanked for all the time, patience, and experience she had given us over 21 years.

During that time the class had danced at numerous functions in Yankalilla and further a field.

Including Strawberry fetes, Yank shows, C.W.A. functions to name a

few. We also attended Scottish Dancing Balls in Adelaide, attended dancing classes at Urrbrae, had weekends away and also danced on a river boat. We went out for dinner every Christmas, and attended birthdays and other social functions together. The friendship and fun will be sadly missed by us all.

ur research on the district's plaques continues to focus on people who have left their mark on our area. One site associated with early identites is the Normanville courthouse. The Normanville police station and the stables behind it were built in 1855.

This single storey building, also serving as the courthouse, was first occupied in 1856 when police troopers T. Berrill and O'Toole commenced duties. At that time all country policemen were troopers, horseback their quickest and most convenient way of travelling around the district. With their three horses on duty 24 hours a day, there was always a horse saddled and tied to the hitching rails in front of

the building, the horses rotating every two hours.

In 1857 Trooper Berrill's wife gave birth to triplet sons, however all three died due to the lack of medical facilities. A year later the Berrills had another son, Edward, who survived and followed his father into the police force.

In 1864 Trooper Alfred Lawrence commenced duties in Normanville. During his time here he caused a sensation when he captured a man wanted for murder in Victoria. On noticing a stranger in the town Lawrence checked his records, suspecting that the stranger may have been the wanted man. At Blackfellow's Bridge, now known as Garnett Kelly Park, Lawrence saw the suspect dive under the bridge, and 'at great personal risk', managed to capture him.

Later, the suspect is reported to have said: 'Three seconds more and I would have drilled a hole in you. I smelled danger as soon as you followed me.' Lawrence later escorted the accused to Melbourne where he was subsequently executed. Highly commended for his action Lawrence refused to accept the

reward money. 'I was only doing my duty,' he said.

In March 1886 police trooper Rumball investigated a bank robbery at Yankalilla in which the equivalent of $2,480 was stolen. Mr. J.W. Lyall, the manager of the Commercial Bank, reported that he and his wife had been bound and gagged after two or three men entered the bank at 1 a.m. On 3rd April Lyall was charged with embezzling 'the money of the bank'. At his trial one week later the jury found him not guilty, the Crown having failed to show that no robbery had occurred. Lyall was discharged.

Unfortunately, most of the very early Police Station journals have disappeared. In 1961 the Normanville police station was closed down and the force transferred to new quarters at Yankalilla.

The Yankalilla Historical Society meets at 8 p.m. on the second Monday of the month in the Council's Community meeting room adjoining the Mitre 10. New members welcome.

LEAFY SEA DRAGON FESTIVAL 2009 PUBLIC MEETING on Wednesday 9 April 2008, 7pm to 9pm in the Community Chambers, Normanville.

It’s time to start gathering the community’s thoughts on how the 2009 festival should develop. Proposed timing for the next festival is Friday 19 April to Sunday 26 April, 2009.

If you have any thoughts on an event you would like to have in the program, a venue that would be suitable for use during the festival or a way in which you can make the festival another successful community celebration of the district’s art, culture and

environment, this is your chance to have a say.

This will be the first of a series of Public Meetings to coordinate community involvement.

We are interested to hear what should be continued from previous festivals and what can be added to make the celebration more inclusive and accessible.

Normanville SLSC

ormanville SLSC is fortunate to have many skilled members in its ranks and of these, Bob Menhennett and Heather Thompson have been recently honoured by the Surf Life Saving Association for their expertise and dedication to its operations and ideals.

On the beach the hotter months and school holidays have made for a busy time for the Normanville surf club but overall it has been rewarding. A successful junior carnival was held on 16th December and attended by about 800 junior lifesavers from the various clubs from around the state. Although it was a cool day all competitors participated with great enthusiasm and received great support from the public. The Normanville junior team of 13 went well, taking part in many events on the beach and in the water. Thanks to the people of Normanville for their support. Following the carnival we have seen a resurgence in junior numbers and were pleased to have 25 young future lifesavers and their parents on the beach on Sunday 30th December at the usual

morning session. It’s on every fortnight at 11am from the 30th. It’s good fun, lasts about an hour and ends with a sausage sizzle. Anyone interested is invited to come and have a look. New Year celebrations were well attended as many took the opportunity to enjoy the night and the fireworks from the clubhouse. The club juniors also added their enthusiasm to the excitement of the Pageant as the major part of the surf club display.

Vac Swim was conducted successfully between 7th and 17th January.

The club would like to appeal to the public to assist us with safety and cleanliness on our beautiful beach. Post New Years Eve we picked up countless cigarette butts from the lawn area outside the Club and the beach and also advised some people not to take spear fishing gear into the swimming area. Please swim between the flags and take your rubbish with you when you leave.

t last were getting back on track after the monotony of the EI hiatus. After sifting through wads of paperwork we were able to have our first rally on Feb 10th. Members and horses alike were pleased to get out of their paddocks and doing some work and having some fun. 11 riders enjoyed instruction from Denise, Sally & Jen Kay. 6 successfully achieved their bare-back badges with Sally. THIS IS SPIDER WEATHER

ith the strong winds we have been experiencing it is unearthing leaf litter sending spiders that use this as their habitat to go running and many are coming in doors .

New webs are appearing in places they have not been seen before.

This kind of weather is usually in August and September not January.

Something has really changed our weather patterns and this is the la nina weather I told you about in my last update with lots of rain still to come.

Lets hope the poor old River Murray reaps some benefit from the floods up in the north. of Australia.

I have been kept very busy with new victims.

Not long ago I saw some children playing in a heap of leaf litter , IF only they knew the dangers that lurk there. Please parents warn your children not to pick up piles of leaves and throw them over each other. It is really nasty when a child becomes a victim I had a report from a victim in Western Australia how her cleaning lady was going through some boxes of things to be sorted and killing MANY white tails that had made the boxes their home.

At the same time she leant on the door jam and was bitten by a Black house spider (badumna longinqua) from the family Desidae. From the mygalomorphae which is a primitive family.

She is quite ill at the moment as these spiders can cause symptoms like vomiting nausea and muscle cramps also diarrhoea and aches all over the body.

I also have a report that some scientists and researchers are now beginning to realise what I have been saying all along ,there is such a thing as re-occurring necrotising arachnidism and it is happening to many of the victims I have registered.

I have the beginnings of another outbreak at the moment but I have been using my Eucanol spray available from The Spider Bite Recovery Group and it is clearing up.

This is why I set up the http://Spider-bite-recovery.org.au so people can receive the correct help to heal up their wounds.

There is a victims survey form on the site so all victims can contact me for advice. See the phone numbers at the top of this update.

Wolf Spiders are out and about also these are the same colour as the huntsman but have black and white striping on their backs. These spiders are doing the same kind of damage that the White tail does ie: The wound breaks down and an ulcer forms which sometimes leads to gangrenous problems if not treated promptly .

If you get bitten don’t hesitate to put the spider in a jar and go straight to your doctor to have the spider identified and treatment started.

Cape Jervis Community Club Family Fun Day

his Year the Family Fun day will be held at the Cape on Sunday the 9th of March, 10.00 am. to 4.00 pm. It will feature the old favorites such as Fish Tossing, and lure Casting, but this year many new activities have been planned.

For the children – Three legged race, Egg and spoon race, Sack race, Egg tossing, Pinyada,

Accurate footy kick, and a coloring in competition [entry sheets available at the Club].

For the adults – lots of food, various stalls, static displays, Golf nearest the pin, tug of war, and Monster Beer Rally.

anuary and February were a mixed bag weather wise, with some cancellations due to too much wind and some other frustrating days on the water with insufficient wind, so much so that some racing was abandoned as the boats were going nowhere fast!

The Club hosted the state titles for Arrows on 3rd February, Arafura Cadets on the 10th and Yvonne Catamarans on 17th. However, the unkind weather ensured that these days were not particularly successful, although on the 17th at least there were plenty of boats out on the water. Local Club members in their Arafura Cadets are leading with the top 3 positions in the State

championships so far at Christies Beach and Victor Harbor, so we expect to see at least one place overall in the state titles.

Remember, weather permitting; we will continue sailing every Sunday until late April. New members are always welcome, so if you are at all interested in sailing, you would be most welcome to join us for a trial spin, even if you have little or no experience. SA. SEA RESCUE SQUADRON.

he Wirrina Flotilla of the SA. Sea Rescue Squadron had the busiest Christmas and January period on Record, and possibly one of the most called upon flotilla’s State wide.

Between Christmas Day and the end of January the local Flotilla attended to some 26 incidents with some potentially very serious and life threatening.

The good old afternoon Fleurieu gully winds blew seven people out to sea in four separate incidents, all of them needing urgent rescue. One intrepid sailor on a small sailing cat not wearing a life jacket of any kind was in the water for two hours before being rescued. He was indeed a lucky lad.

When we delivered him to the open arms of his girl friend on Rapid Bay beach, it reminded us how precious life is and how quickly it can be snatched away.

We had a large yacht suffer some major rigging damage in Back Stairs Passage, and when the weather blew up the skipper thought it prudent to send out a PAN PAN call and request some assistance. This call was picked up by several coast radio stations, including Sea Rescue in Adelaide and the Police water response unit, who asked us to assist. We located the craft well out in the Passage. The sea was rather angry to say the least, and once we got a line on board we started the long slow tow back to Wirrina. I must thank the skipper of Fish Stalker, Scotty Weaver for standing by the stricken craft and giving us pin point directions to find the craft. After some five hours we brought the craft into the safety of Wirrina.

There are always the call outs that should never have happened. One incident comes to mind rather readily was a skipper who run his boat out of fuel twice in the one day.

It seems hard to believe that this could happen, but it sure did. Earlier in the day this rather nice boat was towed in from the Rapid Bay area and delivered to the fuel dock and the skipper put some fuel in the tank. At around about mid night a call for

help was received that a boat was on the rocks just inside the Marina entrance. We could not believe our eyes when we saw that it was the same craft that was towed in earlier in the day. If the skipper had put a little more fuel in the tank he would have made it home. I think it was a costly exercise having this rather flash looking boat getting hammered on the rocks because of complete stupidity by the skipper. It is the old story, just fill the top half of the tank and don’t worry about the bottom half.

There were three boats that were launched on the concrete at the ramp, and several filled with water while the owners were parking their rigs. It pays to check the bungs before launching and don’t take your safety chains off until you are ready to put the craft in the water.

We had reports of a boat on fire with five people on board at Rapid Bay. One of our local members, Greg Crawford was in the area and took the crew of the stricken “Bay Liner” on board his craft and SR5 towed the vessel back to Wirrina. Apparently a hose had come adrift causing smoke and steam to come from the engine hatch. It could have been worse.

I could go on and on but I will just mention a call out we had to the “Sea Way” ferry which broke it’s moorings in the Marina and a considerable amount of damage was reported. The matter is under Police investigation.

For those boaties who use the Wirrina ramp at night, you should have noticed that it is a little bit brighter. Through an initiative of the Sea Rescue Squadron some of your boat levy money was granted to make safer boating a possibility with the installation of two solar powered lights at the ramp. These lights were put there at no cost to the new owners of Wirrina and erected with volunteer labour by members of the Squadron. (We even paid for the concrete) to promote safer boating. I must thank Don Bowyer for freighting these lights down from Adelaide. The over all cost of this project was over $11,500:00 and I think this

is a worthwhile project not only for the boating public but also to assist the Squadron on night call outs. The Wirrina ramp was a pretty dark and dismal place before. I hope that the upgrade to the Cape Jervis ramp will soon become a realistic proposition and not just a pipe dream. My sources of information tell me that council is working on it. At low tide it would be almost impossible to launch large rescue boats at the Cape.

Our communications have been up graded with the installation of a GRN. radio and a hand held GRN. This will bring us into line with other emergency services in the region, and enable us to contact each other in the event of a major incident..

Sea Rescue State wide is running a major fund raiser in the form of a raffle, with first prize being a WRX Subaru.

SOUTHERN FLEURIEU BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT

he Southern Fleurieu Health Service Bereavement Support program aims to assist and support people who are grieving the loss of someone close to them.

This service provides information, grief literature and educational resource library, a referral service to short term grief and loss counselling, community education, a support group, and social morning tea gatherings.

Dates to remember: Thursday, 28 February: The SFHS, Bereavement Support program will again offer those community members seeking bereavement support an informal facilitated meeting of sharing and learning around bereavement. Loan library books and other grief literature will be available. Please phone 8552 6522 to arrange for any specific resources to be made available.

YANKALILLA COMMUNITY CHURCH WELCOMES NEW PASTOR.

he members of Yankalilla Community Church are very pleased to announce the appointment of their new Pastor.

Pastor Rob and Jan Goodfellow have been ministering at Yankalilla since 13th January as visiting ministers, however they have now accepted the leadership on a permanent basis.

Rob & Jan have four adult daughters and three grandchildren, they have been in full time ministry for over 25 years.

They recently retired from their

position as senior pastors of the Kilburn Community Church which they opened in 1993.

Prior to that they were on the ministry team at Westside church at Findon for several years.

The major emphasis of their ministry is to bring restoration and refreshment to the saints and to train and mobilise the church to be effective in the sharing of the good news about Jesus Christ.

They come to us with a broad knowledge of church and community life.

Until recently they were involved as board members of Children for Christ.

Pastor Rob served with Teen Challenge in many capacities including as chairman for a period of time and chaplain for ten years.

At present they continue to visit prisons and nursing homes.

They truly believe that everybody has the right to know that Jesus is Lord and that is the gospel they want to share with all who are willing to listen.

For a number years they were involved with missions in India, China and the Philippines.

They also minister to various churches in the Moonta area and make contributions through the local fm radio station with music and insights into victorious Christian living.

Both Pastor Rob and Jan also excel in the ministry of worship, prayer, preaching and teaching

and both hold fast to the conviction that to be effective in any way the local church needs to be healthy and strong.

Having had a short beak from full time ministry they are excited about coming to Yankalilla and serving the church here.

ell I can’t believe it’s been so long since we have managed to put out a police report. Perhaps it’s partly because things have been pretty quiet on average. So here it is.

New Years Eve went very well up until about 2.15 a.m. when there was an incident at the usual location, Jetty Road Normanville. It appears that the persons responsible for the incident were not locals. Three local residents were assaulted as a result. The pageant went off well with no reported water bombing or other object throwing incidents.

Regarding the rest of the holiday period, things went pretty well. We had minimal vehicle accidents despite the high number of holiday makers down our way. There were also not many other major incidents over the same period.

A ‘first’ for the ACH

O

n Friday, January 11th, at the ACH a picture called “Road to Happiness” was unveiled

by Ena Harvey of gallery 88. The abstract, acrylic on canvas, was the combined work of a group of ACH ladies and hangs proudly on the wall in the Activity Room. The interesting and happy painting evolved during an activity session organised by Chris Hales-Peterson at the ACH well before Christmas. All the ladies enjoyed the results of their own creativity and to quote from one lady at the unveiling: “ I did not come to the activity because I can’t paint, but I know I would enjoy doing something like that, count me in next time”, and there will be a ‘next time’ later on in the year.

The group’s experience has shown that adventurous, artistic challenges can be met at any age and overcome.

ox Creek Wine Fleurieu Peninsula Sheep Dog Trials will be held at the Yankalilla Showgrounds - Main South Road Yankalilla on the 2nd and 3rd of March. The trialling will begin at 8.30am and continue until abut 5.30 each day. Entries are expected from around SA, VIC and NSW.

Admission will be by gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Lions Clubs Charities. Local entries are invited in the Encourage Class. This class is for dogs of beginner status.

The BBQ will be cooking all day, both days to keep you fed. Soft drinks will also be available.

Marquees will be erected so you can relax in

comfort and watch the dogs work.

HELPERS NEEDED FOR WILDLIFE SURVEY

utumn brings the next biodiversity survey in the “Minnawarra” scrub near Myponga. The project is run by the Scientific Expedition Group (SEG) and monitors the long-term effect of fencing cattle and sheep out of the scrub. The eight survey sites established in the bush have been monitored for the past 7 years.

Traps will be opened on Wednesday 23rd April 2008 for four days and nights, until Sunday 27th April. It is an interesting time, particularly for young people, as it is during the school holidays. Could you help set up traps on Wednesday, and/or help process the animals on other days?

Nearly 200 traps are used for mammals and reptiles in each survey. There are three different types. Pitfall traps are sunk into the ground with a fence running across them. Small animals and skinks run along the fence and fall in. Elliott traps are metal boxes with a bait of rolled oats and peanut paste inside to trap small animals such as bush rats. Larger animals are trapped in cage traps at each end of the pitfall line. The traps are inspected each morning and evening, trapped animals identified, weighed, marked and released. In the evenings unidentified animals and plants are studied and identified.

At the same time there will be surveys of vegetation, birds, reptiles and frogs at the eight sites. A bat-meter records different bat species by identifying their calls, and some will be trapped in nets. Trapping of bush rats, swamp rats, antechinus (marsupial mice), as well as a variety of frogs and skinks is expected, usually between 100 and 200 specimens are trapped during each survey. Other interesting captures have been pygmy possums, antechinus with young in the pouch and echidnas. Results are entered into the SA Biological Survey.

SEG is a volunteer, non-profit organization aiming to encourage an awareness of the natural environment. Young people and adults are welcome to help with these surveys. Come for one or several days.

Camping is near a large shed with heater, electricity, barbeque, cooking gear and toilet. Bring your own food and camping gear.

Registration is essential to be covered by our insurance. A small donation would be welcome (suggest $10 adult, $5 students).

ell it is now 2008 and this is the first chance to report activities around our club since the end of December as this great publication combined its January and February issue into one. Apart from Pennants where Divisions One and Four are strong contenders for finals and both ladies divisions in contention. We have a few new faces in the Club Champions with Park Fogarty (singles) Mike Lienert and Bernie Scott (pairs) and David McMartin along with Sonny Downes, John Carrol and Tome Harvey (fours). Well done to all those chaps, great effort! The move at our club is replacement of artificial green, the old one will be removed this month and hopefully a new one laid by early May, in time for the winter mid week season. The club members have a huge and expensive job ahead and busy bees are being organised through March headed by Mike Codd, Ed Bennett and Milton Kennewell (any helpers welcomed

anytime). Of course there will be a sell off from lifted carpet green and this will be available and suitable for tennis courts, swimming pool surround etc. The asking price will be $4 per square metre. By the time this issue is printed Pennants both ladies and men will be nearing completion and also the night owls who have had an exciting and fierce competition but well handled by Anna, Roxanne, Lou and Fraser.

Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre

T

he new year has brought many changes to both the childcare and preschool programs offered at the Yankalilla Community Children's Centre.

Significant increases in childcare numbers towards the later half of 2007 has enabled the centre to employ a new team leader for our over 2 program. At the start of 2008, the centre welcomed “Leonie Cooke” into this new position. Leonie has brought many years of childcare experience into this new position as

well a regular welcoming face every morning for children and families.

In addition, the centre has successfully applied to change its license so that we can now care for up to 10 babies (under 2) on any given day. A big thankyou to the Yankalilla Red Cross, who helped with this upgrade by donating three porta cots which were required to meet licensing requirements. The additional childcare positions for babies under 2 years have been filled on Mondays, but we do have vacancies on the other days of the week.

Another major change at the centre this year is that preschool (for children aged four years and over) is now offered over 3 days – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with children able to attend any two of the three days (preference given to older children on choice of days).

n the weekend of the 16 November 2007 a huge task was undertaken to remove the old ceiling of the Delamere Uniting Church and to replace, re-plaster and repaint the ceiling and the church. Donations for materials and services were sought from local operators and surrounding districts.

So many individuals worked tirelessly giving their labour and providing food for the workers over that weekend and the following week to complete the project.
