olunteers are the life blood of our community.

They save us from drowning, p u t o u t bushfires, take us to hospital, release us from trapped cars, guide us through the city and country, care for us when we're born or dying, advocate for us in court, and they go on and on doing enormous good throughout the whole fabric of our society for love alone.

Never before in the history of Australia have volunteers offered more of their spare time to the benefit of their communities.

Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre, managed by the District Council of Yankalilla, is looking for local volunteers of all ages with a little time on their hands to come and help run the Tourism Information Centre.

People can volunteer for as little as three hours a week. In exchange they gain skills in hospitality, the local and regional tourism industry, community events, computer and internet operations. Other benefits include making strong friendships

with fellow volunteers and taking part in interesting free trips to local and regional tourism attractions.

According to event management and tourism officer, Don Chapman, the Centre welcomes approximately 14,000 visitors a year through the door from all over South Australia and the world.

Don attributes the success of the Visitor Information Centre to its volunteers.

“Their knowledge, friendliness and enthusiasm for this area is amazing. The Centre could not exist without them”, he said.

The Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre is a great showcase for accommodation, events, restaurants, galleries, hotels, sports clubs, businesses and local producers of the area. Their aim is to provide an efficient and comprehensive information service for visitors, the local community, businesses and the general public.

By volunteering local people can learn new and interesting skills while making an invaluable contribution to your area.

e did not have a meeting in April as it fell on ANZAC Day. Instead we joined with the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival to host a talk by Phillip Hall about the Coastal waters around our coast. Phillip Hall is the President of the Marine Life Society of South Australia or MLSSA for short. He showed us amazing slides of the sea creatures and flora that abound under the water. It seems that 87% of the animals and flora in our waters is not found anywhere else. The Great Barrier Reef is the opposite, 87% of its creatures and plant life is found elsewhere. So we are very lucky to have a society

like MLSSA who are there to help us to understand, enjoy and care for our oceans. The photographs were taken by a variety of divers and some of the photographs are used in the calendar that MLSSA produce each year. There are some truly amazing pictures of the Leafy Seadragon as well as Sea Horses, Thornfish and many other creatures. The world under the water is very colourful but also very vicious.

How are the rainwater tanks, filling up nicely! Some of you out there must have done some sort of ceremonial rain dance because haven’t the heavens opened at last, let it rain let it pour.

The Yankalilla District Council have included a two page spread for their 2007/08 Draft Annual Business Plan, this is an important document for all residents to read and provide valuable feedback to the decision makers.

Our sincere condolences to the family of Jill Chinner. Jill was heavily involved in the community, in particular the Show Society.

She will be greatly missed.

Condolences also to the family of Maxwell Thomas Christie. His services to the community as part of the Rapid Bay & District CFS are commendable.

he Yankalilla Soccer Dragons Under 9's played their first game of the season on Saturday 5th of May at the Yankalilla Area School Oval. Competing against ‘Our Saviour Lutheran’, the team played hard and Olivia Burton from Yankalilla scored the first goal of the match. The opposition went on to win with a final score of 3 to 1. A great effort for their entry into the competition, well done kids!

he Leafy Sea-dragon Festival saw an interesting art exhibition at the Club that brought enthusiastic responses from encouraging numbers of viewers. Of particular interest to children, adolescents and adults were the pieces constructed from re-cycled materials. Thanks go to our sponsors, the Community Club, the Trading Post at Delemere and D’ Arenburg Winery.

The fish dinner was sold out well before the event and a highly successful night with

good food and wonderful entertainment from the ‘Recliners” resulted in a night enjoyed, by all accounts, by all who attended. Bernie and Patsy’s music made it difficult not to get up and move and the dance floor was put to very good use – after some cornflour improved the surface!

YACCA Best Dressed Business Winners

D

uring the recent Leafy Sea Dragon festival YACCA conducted a competition for the best dressed business.

Starter packs containing balloons, streamers & posters were distributed to businesses in the area. It was pleasing that nearly every business made an effort to decorate their premises and enter into the spirit of the festival. We are sure the visitors were made aware of the community participation. The winner by a country mile was Myponga Market who made an outstanding effort.

Second place went to Normanville Pizza & Take Away with their underwater display made from suspended streamers and marine life- The large ferocious shark suspended just inside the doorway added just the right whimsical touch. Other businesses who went to considerable effort included Mitre

10 Garden Centre, Jelfs Normanville Newsagency, Normanville Catchment resource centre, Tonya's Hair Design, Yankalilla Landscaping & Garden Centre & Yankalilla Bakery. Rosemary & David from Myponga Market made an incredible effort to decorate the entire market area both inside and outside. They also involved the local school by displaying student's art works. Of particular note were the decorations on the large cement tank at the rear of the market. Jenny Chand and her willing band of students from Myponga Primary school transformed the tank into a magical display. The message of the paintings was that if the people care for the land then the water that flows to the sea will be of good quality for the nearly extinct dragons that live in the sea. Credit should also be given to Bunnings for donating the paint. The revamped market is certainly worth another visit. YACCA thanks all local businesses for their contribution to a successful festival.

Leafy Sea Dragon Festival

would like to thank the whole community for their support of the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival.

• There were at least 500 volunteers, both upfront and unsung behind the scenes.

• Many more locals were among the total of over 10,000 visitors to the 79 events during the ten days.

• Generous sponsors gave cash as listed in the official list elsewhere in the YRN and also many others provided time and in-kind support.

How can any list cover or do justice to all the ways people gave?

• Support from Council outdoor staff helped with signage, flags, carrying and setting up and more, all with the spirit that nothing was impossible. Similar cooperation from Council Office staff really assisted organisers as well, and the Youth and Community Services Officers ran great programs.

• All events had convenors, often with a team behind them, and to those we are indebted for the quality of the programs happening during the festivities.

• At several venues there were sitters of exhibitions and their friendly and informed approach and coordination have been much remarked upon by locals and people from out of town.

• The Visitor Information Centre was busy

In particular I acknowledge the extraordinary contribution of Ruth Davis, Chair of the Planning Committee without whom there wouldn’t have been a festival of this calibre. he bowling side of the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival mixed fours competition held on 23rd April was a huge success. With some 96 players from various clubs participating and the Ladies committee handled the “kitchen catering” meals and afternoon teas with the usual capability, well done ladies. The actual organising of the event was in the hands of John Stone and Barry Cotton with Marlene Stone keeping a close eye on proceedings. The event was won by the local combination of Des Lord (skipper) and Anne Minke, David McMartin and Yvonne Lakey. The runners up being A Halstead (Encounter Bay) and R Mazey (3rd) from Happy Valley. Also the recently held Meat Traders Association event held at Shepparton was won by our bowlers including Lew Whittlesea, Billy Dunstall and Malcolm Noble who brought the shield home. Not so successful were J Stone, M Fitzgerald, Lionel Bowyer and

Winter Mufti bowls are now well under way on Wednesdays and Saturdays and organising these functions are Brian and Sheila Reading who would like to see a few more bowlers compete and share their enthusiasm and input. Also the club has a few new faces on the c o mmi t t e e s in clu d in g Ka y Kenewell (secretary), Bill Prior (chairman men’s com) and a new set of selectors being Park Fogarty, Bernie Scott and Milton Kenewell and of course Lew Whittlesea is the new Tournament Director replacing John Stone. Our new secretary has replaced Elaine Oglerenshaw after 10 years of loyal and dedicated service. She will be sadly missed as will her husband George around the club. Great members like these people are hard to replace with respect. Well that’s it for now except the club is hoping to have four teams in this coming season. Cheers “H”

DELAMERE COUNTRY WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION

elamere C.W.A. celebrated its birthday in May, this year we turned 59. We spent the day in Victor Harbor. First we went to Wendy Jennings Gallery, for those who have never been, find the time, it is well worth a visit. Wendy does lovely paintings of birds and wild life; she is also a taxidermist and has a collection of skulls. The morning was very interesting. For lunch we went to an old favourite, Urimbirra, where we all had a very enjoyable meal. One of our members is leaving us and has bought a house at Encounter Lakes.

We went to her new house for our business meeting. It's a lovely house and it was very pleasant looking out over the lake. From there we went to the Wild Rose Tearooms for afternoon tea, before

making our way home again. Next month Thursday June 7th we are going to Jean Leckie's home for craft and to plant trees. If the weather stops us from planting trees we will go for a walk. Pooled lunch, and there will be pea and ham soup available to purchase to raise money for the Emergency Aid Fund for the drought stricken farmers. Members please all try to come and support this very worthwhile cause. Craft that morning will be using rice paper to cover ornaments etc. We have done this easy craft before and it was popular. If you can, bring rice paper, a small article to cover, a brush and we will need some aquadere.

embers were light on when President Mrs. Trenna Eatts opened the May meeting on Wednesday 9 th May in the Myponga Hall After reading the Creed roll call was to "Where is your favourite holiday destination" as several of our members are just doing that. Discussions were had on our craft display held during the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, most members expressing amazement at how quickly and efficiently we worked together to put up the display and how they were surprised at the depth of craft work that was displayed. Trenna praised everyone for their efforts on the day. Thank you also to the Myponga Quilters for adding to our display. Discussions were also held on our contribution towards Myponga's efforts for the Cancer Big Morning Tea on 24th May and the Cundell Group "Silk Road to China" day being held in the Myponga Hall on 31st May with members from Goolwa, Pt Elliot, Victor Harbor, Hindmarsh Valley.

Warrekilla Group for the day. Plans were made for our new programme for 2007/08 and discussions were had on our June meeting which has been changed to Wednesday 20th June. Our guest speaker on the day will be Sue West who will talk about the history of Sister Dorrington. We were delighted to welcome two members from our Link Branch of Milang to our meeting and on closure of the meeting enjoyed socialising with them over afternoon tea.

Be a Tourist In Your Own Town on The Yankalilla Way

F

or years we have had a brilliant drive experience known as The Fleurieu Way. It takes visitors on a grand tour of the Fleurieu Peninsula. It includes the Hills and Seascape Discovery Trail through the Yankalilla District, the McLaren Vale Wine Trail, the Hills and Lake Drive around the Strathalbyn, Milang and Clayton area, the South Coast Drive around Port Elliot, Middleton, Goolwa and to the Murray River mouth, and the Victor Harbor Highlights Trail.

The Fleurieu Way is 203 kms of superb driving that collectively presents some of the most spectacular and rewarding ways to experience the Fleurieu Peninsula. Each of the drives take you through some of the rich farmland and coastal areas where farm gate produce and other hands-on food and coastal experiences are available.

The Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre has emulated The Fleurieu Way concept by creating a Yankalilla Way exhibition. It is designed as an easy-to-read guide to all that Yankalilla and its hinterland can offer.

It gives a description of every town in Yankalilla along the Fleurieu Way including accommodation, activities, arts, crafts, curios, events, food, parks, points of interest, produce, walks and wine. The exhibition includes lots of great images to bring the display alive.

So, if you’re passing the Visitor Centre on 104 Main South Road, Yankalilla, do drop in for a look. We’re open 9 am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays. We invite local people to tell us what they think we’ve missed and help us create the best Yankalilla Way possible.

MUSIC RAISES FUNDS FOR SHOWGROUNDS RENOVATIONS

D

id you know that the local show is 125 years old this year? We on the committee think that’s a good reason to make this year’s show special. With this in mind, Ian Main who has just finished coordinating the Normanville Street party and is now on the show committee, has suggested that we draw more of our local musicians out of the woodwork and showcase their talent on the day.

Also after 125 years there are a few major renovations that the showground facilities need. The no.1 priority is the construction of a disabled toilet. Which means finding more funds.

These two goals have given rise to the idea of the Yankalilla Acoustic Music Evenings.

These will be held on the 3rd Saturday of the month with the first one kicking off on the 16th of June at 5pm.

So what sort of music is acoustic music? We define it as music that can keep happening when you turn the power off. Though it is fun to use microphones and pickups so the main stage in the supper room will be amplified. The hall, however, will be available for small groups to practice and play in an informal non-amplified setting.

Funds will be raised through sales of drinks from the bar and of delicious Indian style meals. Also, donations will be eagerly accepted anytime during the night.

So if you are into music whether listening or making, tasting great authentic Indian cuisine and enjoying a social drink don’t miss these evenings at the show grounds.

Oh and if driving home late at night doesn’t feel like a good idea we’re opening the grounds for overnight camping. There is a $5 per head charge for this.

e warmly welcomed, Jennifer Hockey, an acknowledged pastelist, to our May session. Jennifer set up a colourful ‘still life’; an arrangement of pottery vase, copper kettle, silk cushion, selected fruits and cloth, for her demonstration and our challenge. A challenge of shapes, light and darks, perspectives and the balance of colour combinations. Jennifer’s verbal input clarified the actions of her hands and her knowledgeable selection of colours.

The whole session proved to be thought provoking and opened up a whole new approach to working in the pastel medium. The exhibition of her skill in this medium was much appreciated.

This session also gave me the pleasure of welcoming five new members, to share

creativity with like -minded colleagues and to share the excitement of putting colour onto paper, thus creating something new and personal.

We now have a membership of twenty, which I think, is something of which to be proud. I feel that our Yankalilla Art group has now an established face in our community and is there for the benefit of all.

Our next meeting on Thursday June 7th will welcome a new addition to our tutor list, water colourist, Penelope Hilliam. Please, will all members, where-ever possible, prepare paper before hand for this session.

Thursday July 5th, we have been generously invited by Paul and Sue Elliot to share in the beautiful surroundings of Corinium Roman Villa for a session of plein air painting. There will be no tutor on this day.

Gallery 88 arilyn Jelfs’ water-colour and pastel exhibition throughout the month of May

has been very well received and enjoyed by all our visitors.

After the hustle and bustle of the previous month it was very pleasing to return to a slower pace of life enabling our members to catch up with all the bits and bobs that need to be done to keep the gallery vibrant and interesting.

If anyone is not familiar with gallery 88, we are a community gallery providing space to display the work of local artists. We can be found at 88, Main Road, Yankalilla and we are open Wednesday to Sunday, every day during School and Public Holidays from 11a.m. to 4pm.

ob Magor had us all enthralled during his talk about how he started his writing career.

He then spoke about his soon to be released ‘serious’ book which features Mr Wright, who was anything but. Many attendees put their names on a waiting list, not wishing to miss out on a copy. We were treated to some of Bob’s very funny tales of supermarket shopping and his exposure to a feral mixed grill. A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all who attended.

Yankalilla Writers meet on the 1st Monday of the month @ various locations from 9:30am until about 2pm and on the 3rd Monday of the month @ the Normanville Council Chambers from 9:30am until noon. We welcome all writers, would be, beginners and almost famous authors.

Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre

uge Success - Mother’s Day Flowers Sale earned over $500 for the establishment of the “Community Support Worker Position.”

The position will entail the employment of a local person with a disability. The Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre has benefited from employing local people with disabilities either in a paid or voluntary capacity for many years. The Governing Council of the Centre would like to formalise this position and utilise the Co mmon we alth Go ve rn me n t “Supported Wage Scheme” to be able to offer some regular work to a person from our community who meets the funding criteria. This position is currently being targeted towards Donna Brook who has been working at the centre for the last 8 months. In addition to the su pport ed wa g e s ch e me a significant amount of funds need to be raised to make this position a reality.

As a first initiative to attract corporate sponsors the YCCC coordinated the sale of professional "Mother's Day" flower arrangements.. The arrangements were made by Andrea Travers of

“Fleurieu flowers, weddings and events” and all profits and some flowers were donated directly to the children’s centre.

“The initiative was devised and carried out by Andrea in order to kick start the sponsorship process and in order to seize the c o mme r c i al o p p o rtun it y o f Mother’s Day to donate profits to this worthy cause. In addition to this we are particularly pleased to announce that the major share of the total earnings has been generated through external/third party orders and has not – as so many times is the case – been generated entirely by the children’s parents whose budgets are already more than stretched with existing and more traditional fundraising activities” Cathy Tozer, Director Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre says.

The centre has decided to employ a disabled person for 12 months, subject to funds being raised by selling individual sponsorship packages to local and non-local businesses.

Unique package will be on offer for businesses who would like to seize the opportunity to support this worthy cause. This tax deductible

scheme will be tailored to each sponsors individual requirements and should include a package consisting of a range of PR and marketing activities including media exposure and cross promotional opportunities.

A lot of people have contributed to the success of this first initiative and the YCCC would like to thank all people who purchased flowers, local businesses and organisations for displaying information folders and the Yankalilla Area School for

the use of their notice board. In addition we would like to thank ~The beach café, Yankalilla Hotel and with The Links, for selling flowers on our behalf as well as the ANZ bank for the placement of a large order.

ALEXANDER DOWNER VISIT

n the first day of this term, the 31st April, Alexander Downer visited the school to experience first hand the workings of our school. He was first met by Sonia Parker, Mike Brazier, Karen Putland, Susan Kilgour and the Chairperson of the Governing Council, Roger Sweetman who spoke with him about the school programs and initiatives, its community and the student cohort.

He was then led around the various sections of the school, even reading a story to the receptions in Mrs Warwick’s class.

He also observed an Open Access lesson, a senior school biology lesson using the latest in Smartboard technology, and a drama lesson in the Performing Arts room.

The need for Federal funding for Area Schools to develop and m a i n t a i n p r o g r a ms w a s highlighted. It is hoped our plans for the expansion of our music and ICT programs can be realized.

The feedback from Mr Downer was very positive and he enjoyed the few hours spent in getting to know our school.

If only I had …….

I

am honest enough to admit that, even though I can write here each month about better ways to do business, I don’t always follow my own advice when running my own. Sort of like, the plumbers plumbing or the mechanics car.

At least I can genuinely claim to understand what it is like to have the day to day pressures of small business and how hard it is to get done what you know is for the best in the long run.

What prompts such a confession? A simple article by Peter Crocker in a recent issue of the popular e-magazine for solo business operators at www.flyingsolo.com.au . The only subject I have ever wanted to teach at university is “Hindsight Management” … because it is all so true. Peter got the basics down into four critical points.

• Maintain a detailed customer list from day one • Actively collect customer testimonials and good news stories • Seek professional advice early • Not name the business after yourself Customer details do not have to be collected on some super complex computer program, they just need to be accessible and meaningful to you and whoever may need to access them later.

For example, someone buying or having to take over running the business. The knowledge has value to you now and in the future. It has cost you to learn and

will cost you to replace. The more you know and remember about your customers, the more you can sell each time and the more of them you will keep.

Additionally, this knowledge adds to the value of your business should you choose to sell out.

Every business has established a reputation, hopefully good! How do you record and communicate this to grow your reputation and support word of mouth? We all have good news stories from past or existing customers. Collect them and use them to promote and underpin this reputation. They are much more credible if these “testimonials” identify the customer, so you will need their permission for that. A simple one

Both these activities need to be always and on-going. One of those simple disciplines which can be hard to develop into a habit. aw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely.

I'd been shopping in the afternoon with the girls and was a bit late meeting him thought it might be that. The bar was really crowded and loud, so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk.

He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we went somewhere nice to eat. All through dinner he just didn't seem himself - he hardly laughed and didn't seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying. I just knew that something was wrong.

He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in. He hesitated but followed. I asked him what was

wrong, but he just half shook his head and turned the television on. After about ten minutes of silence I said that I was going upstairs to bed. I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply. He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile.

He didn't follow me up immediately but came up later and, to my surprise, we made love - but he still seemed distant and a bit cold. Cried myself to sleep -I think he's planning to leave me - maybe he's found someone else.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB – OFF THE WATER

W

ith the sailing season well and truly over it was time for the annual dinner and presentation night, held at the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday 5th May. Over 35 members and partners/friends attended and trophies were awarded for performance over the sailing season. Congratulations to all those intrepid sailors for a season well sailed.

On the lighter side, the prize for the biggest improvement was awarded jointly to Dave Carrier and Brian Matthews and the trophy for the most outstanding accident to Mary Bagshaw for capsizing and breaking a leg and giving the rescue boat the opportunity to test themselves out in a real life situation.

Overall, the season was not one of the best weatherwise, with only just over 50% of Sundays being suitable for sailing so we hope that the next season, starting in late October will be more weather friendly. We look forward to the AGM later in the year and to new beginnings in October.

hings are starting to be less hectic with the boating fraternity as the weather is starting to get cooler, but isn’t it terrific that we are getting all this wonderful rain. The country certainly needed, it let alone the farmers and the economy in general. I just hope it carries on and that it turns out to be a bumper season for all. By the time you read this article it will be June and winter will be well and truly with us.

Since the last issue of the Yankalilla News it has been pretty quiet for the members of the Squadron, so they have brushed up on their first aid with Jon Jaensch at St. Johns. Jon runs a great course and I would recommend it to every body. If you haven’t done a first aid course you should think about it as you never know when you may need it. Well done Jon. balling their boats for the winter and here are a few tips that might come in handy. Thoroughly wash your boat and motor with a detergent making sure you get all the salt out from those hidden places and then thoroughly rinse with clean water and chamois dry. Make sure not to waste water and observe all the water restrictions. Start the motor and run it until the carby has been drained. When cool enough, remove the spark plugs and pour a teaspoon of clean oil into each cylinder and turn the motor over by hand a couple of times and replace the plugs.

Grease all grease nipples and don’t forget to do the wheel bearings. If water has entered the wheel bearings they will have to be repacked.

Check the battery terminals and smear them with a battery gel to stop corrosion and have a good look at the wiring for any signs of corrosion.

Check your aerial connections and it is a good idea to give them a spray with Inox or some thing similar. If possible give the battery a charge from time to time. Check the tyre pressures. If you leave tyres under inflated for any length of time cracks soon appear and the tyre will be damaged.

If you do these few things you will not have a lot to do to get your boat ready when the warmer months come around.

We will be taking part in a multi agency exercise at Victor Harbor on the 24th June run by the Police Water Operations unit and the State Marine Rescue Committee and the South Coast Local Service Area Police.

Funding Opportunities – Community Water Grants The Commonwealth Government has just released Round 3 of its Community Water Grants. This programme offers grants of up to $50,000 to help

local community organisations save, recyle or improve the health of their local water resources.

Larger grants of between $100,000 and $250,000 are also available for projects and applicants that meet additional eligibility criteria. Grants are available for projects related to: water saving and efficiency; recycling water for use; treating water for discharge to the environment. Community Water Grants are open to most community-based organisations that want to take action by implementing practical, on-the-ground projects that help solve local water problems. Eligible groups include: rural organisations; local government; schools and childcare facilities; service clubs; sporting and recreation clubs; religious organisations; health and aged care organisations; and environmental and conservation groups.

The three objectives of Community Water Grants are: • To promote a culture of wise water use through community engagement and awareness about saving and conserving water; • To encourage best practice measures and demonstrate water wise solutions adapted to tackle local needs and problems • To provide support and means for community groups to undertake on-ground projects under the three areas of activity.

ANIMAL MATTERS CONSTIPATION IN CATS onstipation is an abnormal accumulation of faeces resulting in a difficulty in passing bowel motions. This may result in reduced frequency or absence of defecation, and/or excessive straining to defaecate.

The faeces are retained in the large intestine which is called the colon.

One of the functions of this part of the bowel is water absorption, and so the retained faeces become hard and dry.

This makes defaecation even more difficult. Constipated cats strain in an attempt to defaecate and this is often painf ul.

P aradoxica lly, so me constipated cats may pass small amounts of liquid faeces.

Factors associated with causing constipation include excessive hair in the stool - especially in long-haired cats, and cats with flea allergy (because they lick themselves and swallow lots of fur); ingestion of foreign bodies (such as needle and cotton, or wool); obstruction caused by tumours compressing the large intestine; pelvic injuries, most commonly after a road accident, resulting in a narrowed pelvic canal; damage of to the nerves of the colon (this may arise following traumatic damage such as a road accident or may be seen as part of more generalised neurological disease); and in some cases, there is no obvious cause identified. Constipation is a condition seen most commonly in middle-aged and older cats.

Megacolon is a condition where the colon is dilated and poorly motile. It may arise as a primary disease or secondary to long-term constipation.

When the colon becomes distended with faecal material over a prolonged period of time its ability to contract may be reduced or lost resulting in megacolon.

In most cases, a diagnosis of constipation can be made on the basis of the clinical signs that the cat is

showing. Affected cats usually strain unsuccessfully to defaecate and may cry in pain when doing this. Any faeces passed are hard and dry. The cat may also show signs of lethargy, reluctance to eat and vomiting. Further tests may be needed in order to diagnose the cause of the constipation and these may include x-rays of the abdomen and pelvis in order to look for pelvic injuries, colonic restriction or tumours.

X-rays are also required for the diagnosis of megacolon.

Treatment varies depending on the cause of the problem. Initial treatment of a cat with constipation may involve administration of enemas and manual extraction of faeces by a veterinary surgeon.

These procedures may necessitate an anaesthetic or sedative.

Treatment of dehydration with intravenous fluids may also be needed in severely affected cats.

If the constipation recurs or becomes a longterm problem then continuous therapy may be needed to prevent recurrence.

A wide variety of treatments are available and the aims of these are to enable regular defecation of soft faeces. Altering the diet so that this contains more fibre may be helpful and lubricating laxatives or stool softeners may also be used in mildly affected cats. Those more severely affected may need drugs that stimulate contraction of the colon. The doses of all of these drugs may need to be altered to produce the desired effect.

Ideally, cats should defaecate at least once every other day. (Most normal cats defaecate once or twice a day depending on their diet). Over a period of time, resistance to the treatment may be found necessitating an increase in the drug dosage or a change to another therapy. No changes to the treatment protocol should be made without consulting your veterinary surgeon. In long-haired cats, regular grooming may reduce hair ingestion by the cat and

therefore reduce the likelihood of hairballs causin g c onstipati on.

Likewise treating any concurrent allergic skin disease, e.g. by flea control, is vital also. It is important to ensure that there is always access to a clean litter tray so that frequent defecation is encouraged.

If megacolon develops or if the constipation is severe and medical treatment is unsuccessful at controlling this then surgery may be recommended.

Surgical treatment involves removal of most of the colon which initially will result in diarrhoea since the colon is responsible for water removal from faeces. Over a period of time, this usually improves.

The surgery should not result in loss of bowel control.

hen I was in college in Morpeth I had a real struggle about whether to continue theological studies or to leave. It was a time when I needed to get away to think through this quandary. A friend suggested I might find the place I

needed at a Franciscan retreat house in Scone. So I booked myself in.

As I drove north, I passed through some lovely countryside—lush paddocks, rolling hills. It was green as far as the eye could see, trees were

bursting into leaf and flower and the full presence of spring was visible. I started to think about my retreat. It was a new experience for me but I became relaxed and just the thought of being on my own was starting to feel very pleasant.

But there was a drawback. As I turned off the main road and onto the dirt road that led to the retreat centre, I was confronted by a scrapyard. It was one of those farm dumps we see around the place. In a gully were car bodies, old, rusting farm machinery, corrugated iron and bits of girders. It was an unsightly mess and I was glad to get past it. My mind had become focused on the four days ahead of me and this mess came as a distraction.

I think I was being rather unrealistic and my retreat drove this home. I realized that in our lives we often have to go through the garbage to get to the glory.

Certainly, if we want to be more like Christ, we’ve got to root out all the unsightly traits of our own character before we stand even the remotest chance of working towards perfection.

You might say, ‘How do you know this?’ Well, I know this through the experiences of my own life and ministry. I know through my retreat at Stroud.

Sister Angela, the superior of the nuns, gave me the ‘tree house’ for my retreat. It stood away from the retreat centre. It was selfcontained, with its own chapel, set amongst towering gum trees.

She told be to go and hug the trees and listen to the life in them. I thought she was mad. She wasn’t! As I hugged these trees and put my ear to their bark, I could hear the sap rising, gurgling as it rose to meet the needs of the branches and leaves further up. I was so small by comparison to this wonder. I started to shed some of the garbage I was carrying around and which was limiting my growth as a student and as a person.

We can also look at the saints.

These great witnesses to the faith had to deal with weaknesses within themselves before they could be recognized for their spir itual grea tness. If I understand it correctly, we all have to pass through a spiritual

scrapyard before there can be any hope of moral or spiritual growth.

Sins such as jealousy, greed, lying and envy are never very attractive yet, unless they are scrapped, they can dominate our lives. They will govern our attitude to others, and we’ll deny ourselves any hope of being at peace with ourselves, and so being at being at peace with others and with God. Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady after his Sunday morning service and she's in tears.

He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?"

I

n Ephesians 3:8 the Apostle Paul wrote of ‘the unsearchable riches of Christ’.

In our articles at the moment we are looking at the greatness of Jesus Christ. We concluded last month that he was unique to mankind in the complete control of self. Perfect mastery of spirit despite being of human nature. The question to be asked is how was this possible when for every other human being, lusts and enticements and wants drive them to sin or the breaking of the commandments of God. We need to remember the very unique feature about Jesus Christ.

He was the Son of God and therefore endowed immeasurably with the spirit power of His Father.

Drawn upon, this aided him to deny self and serve God without sin. Remember though that he was still a man (1 Timothy 2:5) ‘touched with the feelings of our infirmities’ (Hebrews 4:15); he was ‘flesh and blood’ (Hebrews 2:14) who struggled enormously under the burden of mortality. We learn in Hebrews 5:7 that “in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from (out of) death, and was heard in that he feared”. This demonstrates the struggle it was for Christ to battle against the weaknesses of human nature. Lust, pride, anger, illicit desire, hatred, jealousy, vengeance, we could go on listing all of the inner emotions that we as human beings p ossess that wh en uncontrolled bring us to dishonesty, hatred, to killing, to war, to cruelty, to immoral practice and so on. None of these were permitted to take possession of Jesus Christ. The bible describes it in this way: He ‘did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth’ 1

Peter 2:22.

What God is prepared to do for you and for me because of what His son accomplished is absolutel y wonderful. What do you want out of life.? Happiness, peace of mind, love, joy, hope? All these are attainable as well as the promise of immortality.

This is how it is expressed in the Book of John at chapter 3 and verse 16 `For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.'

So God has provided humanity with the opportunity of life. Is this offer unconditional? No! He has laid a basis for salvation in Jesus Christ but it requires some action on our part to secure it. Let me add several bible references that explain what is essential.

Mark 16:15-16 `Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel, he that believeth and is baptised shall be saved' Ephesians 2:8 ‘For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:’ Revelation 22:12 `Behold I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be ...blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life..'

Now from those references we see firstly a need to believe the gospel (defined as the good news about the coming Kingdom of God to be setup on earth and the matters of salvation achieved in Jesus Christ’s work) and secondly for this to be followed through with baptism.

Thirdly, that faith and works or a way of life follow which will find acceptance, at his second coming, when immortality will be granted by his grace. Grace or Divine favour on his part, with belief,

baptism and a way of life on our part to be rewarded at his second coming.

Dear reader do not be lured into the falsity of belief that immortality (of the soul) is a current possession.

asn't the rain been lovely! The hills are starting to green up making the area look like that 'special piece of earth we all know and love'!

Many or our members have been mobile between rallies and here is how they went.

April 21st and 22nd Ryan travelled to Mt Gambier for PCASA State Championships with 'Wally' and 'Joe'. 'Joe' came in 1st in PC 2 and 'Wally' 2nd in PC 1. Well done Ryan.

Jeri attended a show jumping school at Strathalbyn on the same day.

May 6th was our Rally Day. A small group attended flat work lessons at the grounds thanks to Sally. They then made their way out to Glenys Haymans property at Inman Valley to join the others for lunch and rides outs or cross country lessons. Denise and Yvonne (with her broken leg!! Feel better soon and lay off the ice ring for awhile!) organised this rally in conjunction with Glenys and Verity

Hayman. Denise, Verity and Glenys instructed members in the 'art' of cross-country manoeuvrers and riders were also treated to a different environment for a rideout. It was an exceptional day enjoyed by all! Thankyou very much to Glenys and Verity for the opportunity for our members.

Thanks also to Kathy and Deb for taking over the canteen for me whilst I was feeding the Big Cats at the Zoo. Welcome back to Helen Maidment, who has rejoined the club after a long spell.

May 6th was also Reynella Horse Trials. Ryan, Libby and Jeri were there with bells on. Ryan and 'Wally' were 6th in CNC*. Ryan and 'Joe' were 8th in pre-novice.

Libby and 'Sly' came in 9th in preliminary. Jeri and 'Petros' had a clear cross-country but had a fall in show jumping to get them eliminated.

May 12th - 13th was Mt Pleasant Pony Club ODE. Anthea and Alana attended. Alana and 'Molly' came in 6th in PC5, receiving a lovely

pink rosette. Anthea and 'Meg' kept the fine form coming with an 8th in AL5. Well done!

May 12th Denise took a truckload to SVDC for a show jumping and dressage school with Wendy Schaeffer. Jeri and 'Petros’ were there. On the truck this time was Denise and 'Missy', Helen and 'Roses', Bella and 'Blue' and Kat and 'Ollie'. Horses and riders were challenged and really enjoyed their lessons with Wendy, who is an Olympic Gold Medal equestrian eventer. It's very exciting, particularly for young riders to have instruction with these high calibre eventers, such as Wendy Schaeffer and Megan Jones.

Coming up for FH&PC June 3rd - Rally at the grounds.

Gear check will be at 9:30 sharp you will ALL be required to line up at a spot designated on the day.

June 17th - Freshman's Show Jumping Day. Bella will be taking over organisation for a school assignment and is looking for young members to assist in the various required jobs.

June 24th and 25th - Southern Zone Francis Figwer ODE at Monarto.

As members of the Southern Zone our club has obligation in the running of this event. We always need volunteers to assist with this.

It is a great opportunity to have a look at an event and give us 1 or 2 hours of your time. Please verbalise your interest at next rally.

July 1st/8th (TBC) - Rally, AGM and Club Trophy Presentations.

Now, is a good time to start thinking where you can help your club as all positions will be becoming vacant.

June 17th - FHPC Freshman's Show Jumping Day. Held at FHPC

grounds, start 8.30am. At a cost of $4.00 a round or 3 rounds for $10.00 with and additional $5.00 for non-pony club members. Entry forms are available now! All enquiries to Bella Fyfe PH: (08) 8338 2113 or 0409 632 707 (after 4pm).

August 4th - FHPC Combined Competition. All members are encouraged to compete and/or assist in the running of this major fundraising event for our club.

August 5th - Rally Day. Housekeeping - When riding out and about on our roads and our beach, please remember to Pick up your horses pooh! It is aesthetically unpleasing to see big dollars of horse pooh in the street, on the footpath and on the beach. Also if your horse has a habit of kicking you are required to put a red ribbon in their tails at rally days to insure these days run as safe as possible!

Use of Grounds - It is a privilege of FHPC members to be able to ride at the grounds. Rules must be adhered to. 1. Let Linda (secretary) know - 0417 824333, 8558 3590. 2.

t John Auxiliary of Yankalilla sincerely thank the local community for the beautiful flowers donated to our Mother’s Day stall flower baskets. Add to this the dedicated flower workers, Joan Squire, Jean Hughes, Jill Pearse, Patricia Croucher, Betty Gubbin and Marj Flynn and our fantastic cooks and we get profits exceeding $1000.00 for the day. All of it goes to the ongoing support of our own St John Volunteers, who provide our community with highly skilled, professionally trained personnel to look after us when something medical goes wrong and we need immediate help.

The St John Auxiliary now

finds itself in need of help. The band of workers raising these funds is diminishing. We don’t require much, your attendance to 4 or 5 meetings a year, occasional help on a stall, we only have three a year and help to create those popular Mother’s Day baskets each Autumn.

Perhaps we may ask you to help for an hour selling St John badges on Badge Day in Spring.

Our next meeting is May 21st at 4pm at the Ambulance Centre in Yankalilla, then we don’t meet again until 17th September.

any people from this community would have known Jill Chinner. Jill and her husband Tony retired to Carrickalinga in 1989. But as they say, Jill did not know the meaning of retirement. People may remember the wonderful delights of her successful business Fleurieu Fine Foods, which is now Gallery 88. Jill’s culinary skills were renown. Jill was a much-valued member of the Yankalilla Show Society; she took on many roles as a member of the show committee including that of secretary for the past few years. Jill relished her role as convenor of the Cookery Section, constantly trying to encourage others to enter. When entries were low Jill would cook through the night to provide a cookery display. Jill used her catering skills to run the show kiosk, raising much-needed funds. Jill was a well-respected judge of cookery and regularly judged the Royal Adelaide Show, the Alice Springs Show as well as many regional and country shows, always bringing back new ideas to implement at our show. As with all organisations that run on volunteer goodwill, the show society relies on a

network of friends and family to help during busy show day, Jill had a lot of friends to rope in, members of the Normanville and Yankalilla Darts Club, Normanville Social Club and Probus club can attest to that.

Jill was able to devote so much of her time doing these things because she was always fully supported by her devoted family. Her husband Tony who was always there, her children Kerri, Tracey & Robert and her much loved grandson Joshua.

Jill’s great contribution and service to the Show Society will always be remembered but above all she will be remembered as a friend.

and Friends of The Yankalilla Centre attended to honour those who had sacrificed their youth and their lives so that we all might live in a democratic nation that aspires to maintain Peace and Justice. The service was led by Mr Murray Otte on behalf of the R.S.L. It was follo wed b y a "singalong" accompanied by Mrs Phyl Joy on the piano. A drink and an Anzac biscuit was shared and enjoyed by all.

ANZAC Day

cross the nation on April 25th Australian's commemorate ANZAC Day. It commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli on April 25th 1915, at dawn. Since World War I ANZAC Day became a day on which the lives of all Australians lost in wartime are remembered.

The spirit of ANZAC recognises the qualities of mateship, courage and sacrifice.

Today veterans, service men and women and family members of those who have passed, attend dawn services or marches across the nation. Yankalilla held its dawn service at the Soldiers War Memorial Park at Yankalilla. Some locals made the trip to attend the annual march along King William Street in Adelaide.

Local, John Pile, featured in our cover photo was one of those that marched from the War memorial on North Terrace to the Cross of Sacrifice. Mr. Pile has been making this annual trip to march and reunite with his regiment the 2nd / 9th Division Cavalry / Commandos since the end of World War II. This

division was made up of men from both South Australia and Victoria.

Approximately two hundred marched immediately following the war, but over the many years their numbers have thinned. This year only four marched. The 2nd / 9th Division Cavalry / Commandos left Australian soil in 1941 heading for the Middle East, Syria and Egypt and were among those at the battle of El Almein in Egypt in October 1942. Shortly after this battle they returned to Australia for further training in Northern Queensland before being deployed to Borneo.

The regiment returned to Australia after the war had ended in 1945.

ANZAC Day is a time for us to reflect on the sacrifices and contributions made by so many men and women who have served Australia in time of war.

Local resident receives award

ocal resident, Peter Turtur, recently received an award from the Dept of Health in recognition of his 25 years service as an Ambulance Officer.

The National Award was presented to Peter in Murray Bridge, by Chris Lemmer Chief Executive of SA Ambulance Service last week, in conjunction with the opening of the new Murray Bridge ambulance station, by the Minister of Health the Hon. Mr. Hill.

Peter started his career here in Yankalilla as a volunteer for St. John and progressed to become a professional in the ambulance field. As a Paramedic he worked in the Northern Territory, based in Darwin and travelling to various surrounding areas and then spent 12 years in the Victorian Service, based at Murchison and covering the surrounding areas, before moving back to South Australia, and Yankalilla in 2000.

Peter is now based in Victor Harbor and is

to be congratulated for his persistence, his professionalism and his caring concern for all that are in need of his attention.

SOUTHERN FLEURIEU CANCER SUPPORT & RESOURCE GROUP INC. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

T

he AGM of the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group was held on Friday 11th May and was attended by about 33 people including Victor Harbor Mayor, Mary-Lou Corcoran. Ann Simpson, President, welcomed everyone and then went on to praise the achievements of the volunteers in this ever-growing Support Group. Since the last AGM in 2006, more than 1,000 people have been to the Drop-In Centre, many more patients have sought help, and an increase in the number of volunteers has been invaluable. One extra job that has been put into practice in the last year is the transporting of patients to and from Adelaide hospitals for their Cancer treatment. This now happens on a daily basis and is made possible by the possession of a loan-car from the Honda Foundation. Ann made the exciting announcement that, as the registration ends on the existing car, Honda are going to replace it with another new one. The group is extremely grateful for the car and its team of volunteer drivers. Ann went on to explain that the Group's main fund-raising events are the annual Spring Garden Festival, which this year is spreading right along the south coast, the Christmas Tree Exhibition and the production of the "Visions of the Fleurieu" Calendars. She pointed out that all money raised stays in the local area and is used to support Cancer patients and their families. Finally, Ann explained that the group has outgrown its present Drop-In Centre and is desperately searching for a place of its own.

Negotiations are underway and there should be some good news soon. Once in new premises the Centre will be open daily and

will offer so much more than is possible at present. Watch this space. Sue Johnson, Treasurer, reported that the Group's finances were in good order and thanked Peter Gibson for auditing the accounts.

Some money has been accumulated lately so that the Group can move to a larger premises. Jean Hawkett, Secretary, concentrated her report on the other events that the Group is involved in and pointed out that no fewer than 21 had taken place since the last AGM. These included two Community Awareness Events featuring “Adult Exercise" and "Bowel Cancer", several Concerts, Outreach Days, Trailer Display Days, a Bus Trip to Monarto Zoo and several Afternoon Teas and a Christmas Lunch for its volunteers. In the Carers Report, Jean explained that there are now 17 members of the Carers' Team offering emotional support to about 60 Cancer patients and their families across the Southern Fleurieu. This work is confidential but an important aspect of the Support Group. Sharon Dobbin gave a brief report about the ever-popular Craft Group which produces copious amounts of Craft items for trading tables, mainly at the Christmas Tree Exhibition. During the election of officers for the new Committee, four members stepped down. These were Sue Johnson, Treasurer for the past six years, Neil Wilkinson, a founder member of the group, Tony Hawkett and Lyn Wells.

L E T T E R S A ‘thank you’ to the Normanville and Yankalilla communities

I

want to acknowledge the sustained support provided by the Normanville/ Yankalilla community to my Mother, Jeannie Maynard who died peacefully at the Yankalilla Centre on the 10th of May, aged 89 years.

Jeannie had been in the community since about 1982, living at three different addresses over that time.

Her last house was in Cheesman St., Normanville. During 2001 it became apparent that my highly intelligent and capable Mother was afflicted by dementia.

Alzheimer’s was diagnosed, and progressed inexorably.

From that diagnosis to her move to the Yankalilla Centre in June of 2004, Jeannie

managed to remain in her Normanville home only because of the extraordinary support she received from numerous individuals in her community.

I want to acknowledge the community and its members here- although I won’t name individuals, I believe they will be recognisable to those who know.

I’m her only child, and I live and work in Adelaide. The Southern Fleurieu Health Service and the Yankalilla Centre innovatively collaborated to pool their resources and provide almost daily support visits to Jeannie as the day by day routines and problems became increasingly challenging for her to manage. Without this support we would never have managed to keep her ‘independent’ for as long as we did.

One support worker in particular, I have elsewhere referred to as an ‘Angel’- she not only found highly creative ways to maximise the effectiveness of her weekly hours with Jeannie, but was quietly and professionally assertive when I was struggling to recognise that the time had come for Jeannie to move out of her house and into care. Thank you Angel.

Valuable though that institutional support was, it would have been utterly insufficient had not other people from the local community made individual, unsolicited, decisions to support her.

The local business identity who released his staff in paid time to return Jeannie’s credit card, to change light bulbs, to reset the TV, to retrain the recalcitrant automatic garage door…. etc; who also phoned me when Jeannie’s EFTPOS withdrawal pattern was suspicious. The staff members themselves who took on the ‘help Jeannie’ tasks with such equanimity and love.

The Post Office staff who so patiently managed Jeannie’s obstinate inability to know where her PO box key was, and to instantly lose it should she by some miracle arrive with it. Supermarket staff who routinely returned Jeannie’s forgotten groceries and credit card and, with endless patience dealt with her fumblings at the checkout.

Her next door neighbour and hairdresser who lovingly solved untold ‘lockout’ situations when Jeannie could not find her key or the cunningly hidden emergency key, and always made time to chat with Jeannie. This person, with the full support of her ‘boss’ who went to extraordinary lengths to continue to keep Jeannie feeling self confident and attractive right up until Jeannie could no longer cope with the excursion to the hairdressers. She, like some others, had my mobile number and

would contact me if Jeannie’s situation looked dire.

Other neighbours, two in particular, continued to visit Jeannie long after the conversations had declined into humdrum or repetition and kept me informed on how they saw Jeannie’s situation, and of their concerns.

The bloke who ran a garden bag collection service who routinely refused to charge Jeannie the standard monthly collection fee.

Jeannie’s bag was collected when it was full, and that’s all she was charged for.

Her doctor who, with quiet professionalism dealt with Jeannie’s decline from what I imagine was an interesting, intelligent and questioning patient to, at the end, a distressing example of a person whose biological systems were in substantial disarray. At the crucial points, ‘slow’ time was made to discuss the medical and ethical issues with me. For this I am grateful.

The story continued when Jeannie moved to the Yankalilla Centre. The staff there continued in the spirit already established by the wider community. Their care was exemplary to the last minute. Thank you.

To me, possibly the most outstanding example of community support for Jeannie came from a young woman who worked in a retail outlet near Mum’s home. She had no other connection with this old woman, but was so distressed to see her wandering, lost, within metres of her home that she took the trouble to seek me out on a weekend visit and get my mobile number so she could let me know if Jeannie was in strife: and she did. Our family were so impressed by this that one of the first things our daughter asked when told of her Grannie’s death was whether we had told ‘ that girl’. As it turned out, ‘that girl’ was rostered on the next night and I was able to tell her and thank her.

As a community you should be proud of the support you jointly and severally offered to this recently departed member. Thank You. Ian Maynard

My daughter attends the centre and I believe she benefits greatly by her involvement with support workers who have a disability. n April 24th my daughter had a fall from her horse, resulting in an ambulance ride to Flinders Medical Centre and an overnight stay. I would like to thank everyone who helped at the scene, Dee, Anthea and Mrs Haymanm. Carly, unfortunately I don’t know the names of everyone who helped at the scene, so if you helped in any way, please accept my thanks. To those who got her car and horse back to us, thank you. To Mr Jaensch and partner for looking after “my little girl”, thank you and also for making contact with me so I knew what was happening, a very big thank you. reeks ceased flowing, dams dried up – springs and swamps receded and water restrictions were imposed.

We came through a very dry period.

Dams have been excavated and can now fill with clean water. The rain is most welcome.

A low loader came onto our property and unloaded a huge excavator. I directed it to our largest dam that still had a film of water which covered a deep bog of mud. The great machine rattled around the bank and then extended its massive arm and started scooping out huge bucket loads of sloppy dredge.

I walked over to have a closer look and my heart felt like lead. I saw hundreds of victims – the real casualties of drought – helpless yabbies doomed to death in dumped mud.

I have a particular affection for yabbies. They walk both backwards and forwards on their eight legs and, with one quick tail flip propel themselves backwards at lightning

I recall my younger days of going to creeks and dams with pieces of string and meat and luring them close enough to catch them into a net. What a treat then to cook fresh yabby for tea! Yabbies are now commercially farmed and have won a reputation as a delicacy both here and overseas.

The sight of those helpless yabbies sent me running for a bucket. I ventured into the mire to pluck some from the sticky goo – being careful not to slip in it myself.

I was able to take them to other dams that had been dredged and refilled with clean bore water. What a buzz I got to see them slide into their new fresh home. But, how many thousands have perished in drought stricken dams?

Our own circumstances can get pretty muddy and desperate. We can easily find ourselves like these helpless crustaceans - smothered in mental and spiritual mire.

Ps 40:1-2 Jesus came into this muddied world to rescue us from evil and sin. The apostle Paul stated his mission in these words, ‘This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.’

Jesus met people battling with failure, rejection and disease. His opponents called him ‘the friend of sinners.’ But, he said, ‘I didn’t come to call people who think they are good but sinners.’

We who live beyond the cross and resurrection can experience a new way of living through Jesus. It’s like transferring yabbies from the mud to the clear fresh water. It’s the Biblical principle of transfer. The Bible says of believers, ‘He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the

kingdom of his beloved Son.’ Col 1:13 Don’t stay in the mud. God has something better. He will hear our cry and come to our aid, lift us out the mire and set our feet on a rock.

wish to thank all the people who are donating goods to our shop, it is certainly appreciated by our elderly members who volunteer their time in the shop. The proceeds go back into the community and at present renovating the old cottage and shop. The items in the shop and on the premises are for sale, so it is disappointing that some people take it for granted that some things are free. Unfortunately we can not give things away free of charge as we must make a profit to cover our commitments and expenses, such as council rates, water, electricity, renovations and pay the contractors for the work they do. So please pay for all items to our dedicated volunteers who work to give a service to our community.
