Twenty five people are distressed by the destruction of fauna and flora habitat with the indiscriminate destruction of our trees.

BUT Twenty five people now have a plan to turn outrage into action; a plan to break the ransom like strangle hold of a few over many.

On Friday June 8th, 25 local residents met in the Agricultural Hall to express and action their concerns over the indiscriminate and unregulated loss of trees in our council district. Lisa Blake, Landcare Officer from the Normanville Catchment Care Resource Centre facilitated the meeting.

Research the Native Protection Act and the Significant Tree Planning Amendment Act of 1993.

• Adopt a tree.

• Lobby politicians and organisations.

• Support a local environmental festival being mooted by council’s Tourism Officer.

• Connect with other groups doing similar work to exchange knowledge and strategies.

his month's guest speaker was Helen Clifton, a member of the Humane Society. Helen's passion is conservation of the world's plant and animal species, 30,000 of which are wiped out annually. This, she pointed out, is not a modern phenomenon.

Animals such as the bison in North America were shot indiscriminately, their numbers going down in 20 years from 60-100 million to a mere 200,000. Buffalo Bill is credited with saving the species by establishing Yellowstone National Park.

These days the main reason for falling numbers is habitat loss, as in the case of the spectacled bear, from the Andes, where only 2,000 remain.

Pollution is another cause, followed by the introduction of non-native species, creating competition for food and habitat. Another threat is the removal of animals from the wild.

Killings yet another.

Helen's special passion is bears. Of the eight species, two are under threat: the brown bear threatened in the U.S. where the hunting lobby is very powerful; the polar bear threatened by global warming, the ice melt resulting in rougher, longer swims which can end in drowning.

In some parts of Asia sun bears are confined in small cages and their bile milked via a catheter on an open wound. This cruel treatment is traditional and continues because it's a dollar earner. The bile, used in

traditional Chinese medicines, is also added to drinks and ointments. In Pakistan bear baiting is another cruel practice, the bear chained down and attacked by trained dogs, with bets wagered.

The dancing bear trade is yet another form of cruelty though progress is being made towards wiping this out.

In this practice pain is inflicted on the bear, making it 'dance' for an audience, many of whom are tourists with cameras. In India the Qalandar Rehabilitation programs encourage bear owners to surrender their bears along with their licences. Nose ropes and rings are removed, the bears are then vaccinated and quarantined.

Following this the bears are taught how to be bears. The relinquishing owners, usually Qalandar gypsies, are gi ven m oney f or a lt ern at i v e professions such as agriculture, tuk tuk transport services, or jewellery making. Some of the bear owners work at the rehabilitation centre. The rehabilitation program also provides education for the gypsy children.

At the close of the session Helen brought out her soft toys, in particular, some irresistibly soft and cuddly moon bears. They were very good fund raisers, a number of probus grandchildren now their very happy owners.

Just as we suspected. Winter is here. The rain as been very welcome, but does it have to be so cold as well!

How good is it to have local acoustic music nights here in town. From the report inside this edition it was well attended. There was an amazing array of talent and various instruments on show. Well done to the organisers, this will be a monthly event so keep an eye out for the next one.

Most of the letters to the editor seem have a similar story - council! We won’t comment any further than that.

It was good to see a group of like minded locals joining forces to save the ever depleting population of very beautiful old trees, good luck with your endeavours and keep us all posted.

YANKALILLA FOOTBALL CLUB

e are now into the second half of the season. ‘Oh what a feeling’, to get that first win! A new training regime, fitness training in a gym at Woodcroft on Tuesday evenings, and an increase in numbers on Thursday nights, sees an air of expectancy and enthusiasm about the club, that has been missing earlier in the season.

New Coach ‘Lewy’, with Ryan and a couple of mates, have gone a long way to making us more competitive, and with a plan for the next season/s, we are looking to finish this season with a more

competitive approach. The Dippierdominico evening was a great success, with a large number of Auskick kids, through to Senior Colts, enjoying the coaching of the Hawthorn all Australian footballer. The evening was topped off with Dipper answering questions and having a chat upstairs in the clubrooms. The Mahatma Coat night went well, with a good crowd, which gives us encouragement to try more of this ‘professional’ type of entertainment. Thank you to all the helpers on the night, and

especially Brendan McGrane for the stage and lighting. The next event on our social calendar is Christmas in July, on Sat July 21st, $15 per head, which includes; 3 roasts with all the trimmings, desserts, cakes, bikkies and tea & coffee. Again if you make a booking you will ensure your place is reserved. The clubrooms will be decorated in a winter wonderland theme. Mark Rilstone has generously donated a large crayfish to be raffled on the night. The 1,000 club is happening again after a couple of years spell

(obviously the people who run it have forgotten how much work is involved) Do you remember the envelopes with the numbered ticket inside? You pay the number in cents (from 1 cent to 1,000 cents) and fill in the stub, hand it back to the seller, and you are then in the draw for $1,000. Hang on to the ticket and this will get you a 3 course lunch and one hour of free tap beer, wine and cool drinks on Sunday, 12th August. You don't have to be present on the day to win the $1,000.

s part of research for a Yankalilla Strategic Tourism Plan, members of the District Council of Yankalilla Tourism Reference Group want to hear from community organisations that run major community events in our area, at a meeting on Wednesday 11 July 2007 at 7pm at the Yankalilla Golf Club, off Main South Rd, Yankalilla.

The aim of the evening is to meet with representatives of community organisations to discuss plans for the future; how can Council better assist community organisations; if we can all coordinate our events in a better way; and ideas people have for future events in Yankalilla.

Yankalilla is fortunate that so many groups contribute so much to community life by organising events such as the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, the Normanville Pageant, the Yankalilla Show, Christmas Events, Australia Day, Anzac Day, the Sheep Dog Trials, Biennial Quilt Show, Easter Art Show, youth events such as “Cabin Fever” and the Skate Event, and the monthly Yankalilla Acoustic Evening, to name a few.

A survey has been developed as a way of ensuring that the Tourism Reference Group hears from people

unable to attend the meeting.

All residents of the Yankalilla District are welcome. In particular, the organisers wish to encourage people who manage events on behalf of their organisations or people interested in community events to attend. Rotary Club of Yankalilla Hosts GSE Team from Sweden May 2007

ecently President Mike Rice and members of the Rotary Club of Yankalilla hosted a GSE Team from Rotary District 2400 Sweden. GSE Team, you ask?

GSE stands for Group Study Exchange. The Rotary GSE Team Program of the Rotary Foundation is a unique vocational and cultural exchange program for young professional and business men and women (aged 25 to 40), in the early stages of their professional careers.

The GSE Program provides grants for teams of 4 members plus one Rotarian Team Leader to exchange visits between two countries. The exchange is for four to six weeks, during which time team members are able to experience life in the host country, and also to experience their own vocations as practiced abroad. Group Study Exchanges give team members the opportunity to develop personal and professional relationships, and to exchange ideas. The Team was also hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Broken Hill, Glen Osmond, Berri, Stirling, and Norwood, and also attended the District Conference in the Barossa Valley.

robus is an association of retired and semi retired people who join together in clubs, the basic purpose of which is to provide regular opportunities for them to keep their minds active, expand their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

Membership is open to men of good character who have had some measure of responsibility or

The GSE Team were billeted with members of the Rotary Club of Yankalilla, and during their five-day stay visited many places on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula, including Yankalilla, Normanville, C a r ri c k al in g a, D e ep C r ee k Conservation Park, Starfish Hill Windmills, Granite Island, Signal Point in Goolwa, Myponga Reservoir, McLaren Vale and Kangaroo Island. Although a little rushed, the day spent on Kangaroo Island was voted as the highlight of the GSE Team’s visit to Australia.

On KI the team visited Seal Bay, Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, and Flinders Chase Conservation Park. One whole day of the visit was devoted to vocational placements, where team members were able to observe, participate and share ideas with professionals in similar vocations.

The visit of the GSE Team was an enlightening and highly enjoyable experience for the team members and also for those Australians who came in contact with them. We were able to share aspects of our respective cultures, and to showcase our local area. The Team also gave a wonderfully entertaining presentation about Sweden to 100 Rotarians and guests at a dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Yankalilla.

“Oh, what a night.”

O

n a crisp and clear June night the first Acoustic Music Night was held at the Yankal i lla Agri cultural Showgrounds. The bon fire kept the crowd warm, not to mention the amber fluid from the bar facility or the tempting Indian cuisine on offer. The sounds of the banjo and violin greeted us upon arrival, with the gentle sounds of “Own Sweet Time” playing on stage to get the evening going. Throughout the ni ght va rious musi c i a ns displayed their musical and vocal talents and kept the audience well entertained. A mix of tunes from folk, some Creadance Clear Water Revival, Van Morrison and even a Celtic group transported us back in time with their music. An assortment of instruments were played from wind, percussion and string, including an eighteenth century European instrument called a “Heurdy Gurdy”, which is essentially a mechanical violin powered by the turning of a wheel instead of

a bow. The night was perfect, not a cloud or breath of wind to ruin the outdoor, and more informal, aspect of the event around the bon fire and those who attended agreed it was a wonderful evening all round. It was a chance for both musicians and those who just enjoy listening to share and experience the joy of music in a relaxing and inviting environment. More acoustic nights will be held the third Saturday of each month leading up to the Annual Show in October. Funds raised will go towards further showground amenities. Come along and try it out for yourself.

Leafy Sea Dragon Festival Program Terrific range of events…sometimes too much to choose from.

Try not to have too many events as limited number of people interested are spread thinly; one view that can’t limit number of events, let it be self limiting.

Need to keep minds open for new ideas but always with quality in mind.

Need to state in program if weather dependent events have alternative site available in wet weather; provide advice at VIC, on radio, touch screens etc SLSC could be a wet weather venue Computer touch screens at several sites could highlight daily events and any changed arrangements, plus tickets for sale Announce daily updates on regular radio slot Food offerings need to be more family friendly; provide food map & locate street party in compatible locations Gourmet food seems to be limiting and not a strictly accurate description Not enough food according to some visitors; perhaps have to bring in food from outside if locals can’t commit to providing by a certain date.

Some comments lamenting that some events closed before final day, though there must be taking down time and possibility for more people to attend the finale; not possible to have the finale any later; it’s been a long ten

days for convenors and people need to get back to city, specially if school starts the next day.

School events need to be designed to be more part of the festival – if there is a gap between term and festival then perhaps school contribution could be to displays or parades during the actual festival; school events need better publicity in the wider community not just in newsletters home to parents as many community groups would love to have seen the school parade this time.

Parade really the start of the festival & could be developed as standard.

Clashes for vintage cars with other car events…need to get in earlier with advice or invite them in between times as many had never been to the district before; the 20 or so that came were terrific.

Timing of having Peter Goers kick off the night before the festival was great for party atmosphere.

Materials Excellent & readable program; could put days as well as dates at top of columns; market and VIC very impressed, found it much easier to use this time.

LEAFY SEA DRAGON FESTIVAL FLAGS

uring the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival 4-metre high flags were used to identify the location of every festival event. Some organisations and businesses elected to purchase their flags after the festival for their own use.

The Leafy Sea Dragon Festival Association now has about 80 of the flags available for hire for use during community events in the future. They are available for a

deposit of $50.00 which will be returned to you in full when all the flags are returned in reasonable condition. The flags come in brown (14), black and white check (5), yellow (7), orange (13), blue (5), pink (11), green (4), purple (9), red (4) and white (12).

n a recent caravan trip my wife and I walked to the end of the Port Germein jetty which is over 1.5 km long. A sign on entering the town boasts that it is the longest wooden jetty in Australia. supplied by the Yankalilla Combined Christian Churches Community Care Car service in conjunction with the Yankalilla District Council. I wish to publicly thank those responsible for the wonderful service that is so time consuming for the co-ordinators and volunteer drivers who willingly give their time and resources. Over the past five weeks I was carefully driven to the Flinders Medical Centre and often had to request the driver to stand by without an accurate pickup time when unexpected delays could occur. The co-ordinators do an excellent job.

The drivers are, without exception courteous, friendly and cooperative. I commend all who participate in any way and recommend if anyone has a spare couple of hours per month, to join the team and support those in our area who have a genuine need.

n Friday 18th of May, Yankalilla Area School held its R-12 Sports Day. While the whole school community was pleased that the rain had finally arrived we were hoping that the weather would be kind to us because of all the preparation, hard work and excitement that had led up to this day. Luckily

the weather held and apart from it being a little cold at one stage, the sun shone for most of the day.

The day proved to be a great success, especially for the Flinders Light team, and a great deal of fun and excitement was had by all. We were especially pleased to see so many parents and friends out to support the

Big Day Out

tudents, parents and the community celebrated Come Out and Book Fair on May 11th with a BIG DAY OUT in the school grounds.

Children (& some parents) let their imaginations run wild and dressed in the theme of “Once upon a Time” for Come Out and the library was decorated as a rainforest for the Book Fair’s theme of a “Rainforest of Reading.”

During the day the children, visitors and Fund Raising ran an art gallery, stalls and activities. It was great to see so many visitors join us to create “the longest Macarena line on the Fleurieu” and surprise us with their moves!

A delicious lunch was prepared by the Fund Raising Committee with the help of Ian Cole on the BBQ. In the afternoon, visitors were treated to student performances which included plays, dance and singing—much of which was entirely student generated.

In all a fantastic day was had by all.

Others are improving their strokes, building their fitness, learning to dive and enter the water safely, although there may be some “sore bellies” along the way. The pool may have even needed some topping up after some of the dives!

Comments from the instructors were most positive. They have been very impressed with the confidence of the students in the water and their willingness to listen and learn.

Overall, it is a great compliment to the students, the school and the values of the community. Those students who have not attended have really missed out on a great learning experience.

The Year 6/7 students having had their Aquatics earlier in the year have been learning some valuable life skills with Denise over this time. They have been preparing meals – and cleaning up afterwards. I’m not sure which is the more valuable!!?

Netball Carnival

irls and parents from years 4-7 travelled to Strathalbyn on May 25th for the Netball Carnival.

After much training and support from Lisa Wait and Tracey Eatts, the girls had a great day and managed to win 3 of their 4 games.

It was a wonderful experience for the girls, a few of whom had never played before.

Many thanks must go to Jackie True who accompanied us on the day as our umpire.

Adelaide Visit

tudents travelled to Adelaide on Thursday May 31st for a day out in the city.

The younger students visited the Zoo while the 4-7’s viewed the Egyptian Display at the Art Gallery.

After this, it was a visit to the Botanic Gardens to follow the Egyptian Trail and then on to the Seahorse Farm. This would have to have been the favourite part of the day.

Unfortunately the weather was not kind and we got a little wet, but all agreed that it was a very worthwhile and enjoyable day.

Learning is fun at the Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre

ach term at Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre an innovative learning program is created. This is due to the collaboration of parents, teachers and children. Parents are invited to meet with staff once a term to evaluate the previous term and to contribute their ideas for the next term. The very nature of this process brings together families, staff and often the broader community, generating discussion, new ideas and greater learning for our children.

One of the ideas that arose from our curriculum planning meeting with parents was to have a special focus on “pets” for the term. A “pet roster” was established with children at the beginning of the term. The benefits of our children living in a rural community was highlighted by the wide variety of “pets” that have been brought to the centre for “Show and Tell”.

“Pets” that have visited our centre so far this term have included – a piglet, puppies, dogs, guinea pigs, chooks, miniature horse, calf, lamb, cats and kittens!!

The focus has also been extended to other learning areas including dance, stories and dramatic play – which has taken on a louder than usual emphasis with many a hearty whinnying, barking, etc!!!

The Centre wishes to thank all the parents for bringing their child’s pets into the centre and extending the learning of everybody at the centre.

BRAA holds special meeting

he Bungala Residents & Ratepayers Association Inc (BRAA) held a special public meeting on 16 May to discuss planned Council expenditure, notably Councils proposal to borrow approximately $4 million to build new Council chambers.

Residents at the meeting expressed concern over the level of debt this loan wou ld p la ce o n th e community. A petition was initiated to request Council defer this decision until other options are fully considered and there is additional community consultation.

The meeting also discussed ways to increase service delivery efficiency in the Yankalilla Council area by

sharing routine services with other councils or future amalgamation with a neighbouring council.

More information about these issues and petitions for both a moratorium on Council debt to fund new chambers and a consideration of future amalgamation are available from BRAA secretary Pauline Coulter on 8558 3782.

The next meeting of BRAA will be on 7 June at 7 PM at the Yankalilla Senior Citizens Hall, General Meetings are held the first Wednesday in the month. All Bungala residents and ratepayers are invited to attend.

f you saw Barbara’s work during the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival you’ll be excited by more of her genius displayed in these large powerful paintings; if you didn’t, you’d be mad to miss this chance to see fine examples of her work in the exhibition which marks the sesquicentenary celebrations of Christ Church, the local Anglican Church at Yankalilla.

In these deeply spiritual and religious paintings Barbara combines her strength of portraiture with her affinity for nature and animals.

The works can loosely be divided into 3 sections: Christ as King; Mandala series; the St Francis of Assisi series which include paintings based on the Canticles of St Francis.

While Barbara’s perceptive faces with their fine brush work are often in brightly coloured landscapes, her message is not always optimistic. Her concern for what man does to the environment can be bleak. In a painting of Christ carrying the cross the members of the mob are masked to symbolise loss of identity and debased humanity.

Yet her unique readings of people and issues are very accessible, and emus, kangaroos and native birds and flowers often make this very much an Australian interpretation.

In clear depictions of the joy and pain of creation there is hope as well as

pessimism, and great depth to enthral you in this special exhibition.

Council amalgamation

remain opposed to our Council being amalgamated with any other larger Council, even if there is another Council prepared to amalgamate with us. It is difficult to believe that other Council’s ratepayers would be prepared to take on our proportionately much larger area of dirt roads. With our district’s smaller number of representatives one would imagine that contentious issues would be bound to go the way of the larger number and the long term plans which our Council is pursuing in relation to configuration and structure of the dirt roads would be bound to be less enthusiastically followed. Our Council’s employees are very approachable and certainly in all my dealings with them they have been prepared to go more than halfway to assist. The same is true of their partnerships with service clubs and other community organisations and many of the

community events and developments over the past years would have been unlikely to have happened with a less locally involved Council. I do not believe that bigger is necessarily better in this context where distance makes connectivity such an important issue. Councils are often between rocks and hard places, with enthusiasm stultified by enforced consultations and decisions open to sever criticism from a vocal minority. Very rarely do we hear commendation for e.g. the improvements in parks and gardens, community services, roads, drainage etc. Why can we not put as much effort into getting State Government to provide more in the way of subsides for local government bodies that are crippled by road maintenance as we put into criticism? I get huge enjoyment out of living in this part of the world and I suppose I am prepared to pay a little extra for that.

ere we are in July and I ask myself, ” Where has the art year gone?” Time certainly flies when one is having fun. We only have three more meetings before our November end-of-year ‘knees-up’ and exhibition.

However, June saw us using our time wisely with an exciting and eye-opening session with a new tutor, mixed media artist, Penelope Hillam Amazing and hilarious results were achieved during the first part of the session by means of ‘loosening up’ exercises, such as drawing forwards, backwards, upside down and copying accurately what one had already drawn. Maybe, as a result of such practices, I might now try my hand at becoming a later-day Picasso! Eventually we did settle down to some serious work in a relaxed atmosphere. Our subject was ‘still life’ – bowl of mixed fruit on a small table. Penelope went through many techniques using pencil, oil pastel, ink and acrylics to achieve the desired effect on the paper. At the end of the session it was most satisfying to all members to have completed a painting ready to show and critique. Penelope was cordially invited back to share her skills with us in 2008.

I have only recently become acquainted with the phrase ‘Christmas in July’ so now that I am almost an Ozzie, I thought why not hold onto the idea and run with it. Our next meeting will be held at the Corinium Roman Villa, by kind invitation of Sue and Paul Elliot, for a session of indoor/outdoor painting and a winter warming gourmet experience.

Thursday, August 2nd we warmly welcome Terry Lewitzka for an oil painting session, so now would be a good time to check the oil paints and canvas.

Sue Bean’s June exhibition, using nature as the inspiration for her work, was well received by our visitors to the gallery It is always exciting when a new comer to our area suddenly ‘discovers’ gallery 88 and, even more so, when that person is an artist. Recently, a number of new artists have shown interest in becoming members of the gallery including a local sculptor, Luke Tippins. He mainly works in limestone but is also exploring the combination of stone, wood and metal to feature in his work which should prove quite challenging. His exhibition sculptures were very well received as part of the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival and his work will soon be on display in the gallery.

As a Community gallery this is what we are all about. We know we are achieving our aims when we are able to help other artists to achieve theirs.

CASANOVA – love and other pursuits By Rox Rosey

T

o many of us Casanova was portrayed as the erotic hero and lover of the 18th century.

However, Giacomo Girolamo Casanova (also known as Jean-Jacques Chevalier De Seingalt) was a man with many arrows to his bow.

Casanova, born in 1725 to an actor father who also directed plays, his mother was an actress and a beauty by all accounts. During his childhood, Casanova suffered from nose bleeds, sometimes so serious, his parents despaired of him having a long life.

It could be said that Casanova was dominated by women, firstly by his mother and then a witch who helped him stop the bleeding, later in life he occasionally dressed himself as a woman. His parents left him in the care of his maternal grandmother and went to London, not returning to Venice until 1728, his father dying in 1733, his mother tried to support her children but, she too left Venice eventually ending up in Dresden.

In 1734 Casanova went to live with Doctor Gozzi in Padua, where he received a good education and showed early cleverness. What is mentioned in Casanova’s ‘History of Life’ is that he learned to read in less than a month – at the ripe age of 3 years. He attended university and the seminary but, was expelled for scandalous conduct, perhaps these times were the prelude to his drinking and love affairs hence ending his plans to become a priest.

Some of his accomplishments include serving army officer, violin player (albeit not very successfully) and working for a lawyer, in 1742 receiving his doctorate from Padua. 1744 saw him becoming a secretary to Cardinal Acquaviva of Rome, scandal once again forcing him to leave the city and travel, including Naples, Corfu, Constantinople, finally settling in Venice, more love affairs and in 1746 played violin in the San Samuel theatre in Venice.

It has always fascinated me that Casanova could go through life, becoming forever romantically involved and avoiding disease, we know that King Henry V111 couldn’t escape his venereal diseases which eventually killed him.

Reference is made to ‘History of My Life’ again, which reports that Casanova enjoyed good health until very late in life, and this is where it is recorded that he contracted his first sexually transmitted disease in adolescence, various forms marked different periods of his life.

He learned rudimentary medicine, enabling him to heal himself with a strict diet of nitrate water.

Although his sex life was very lively, he did not enjoy orgies which were very popular with high society.

He fell deeply in love in 1749 with a Frenchwoman, Henriette in Cesena. She left him

and Casanova recalls it was one of the saddest moments of his life.

He then went to Lyons, was accepted as a Freemason and by 1750 had worked as a clergyman, secretary, soldier and violinist in several countries.

Finding himself hounded by the Inquisition, he travelled from town to town – Paris, Dresden, Prague and Vienna and then to Venice where he translated an opera into Italian, his mother had a role in the play.

Casanova’s freedom ended in 1755 for a year.

He was arrested, his manuscripts, books and works on magic were seized. He was denounced as a magician and sentenced for five years in lead chambers under the roof of the Doge’s Palace. However, he did manage to escape with a friend, making his way to Paris where his escape made him a celebrity . Among his other attributes, Casanova was a gambler and in 1757 he introduced the lottery, this in turn making him a millionaire.

Between 1774 and 1782, Casanova was recruited as a spy by the Venetian inquisitors of state.

To think that just over 10 years ago, I sat in a gondola on a canal in Venice looking up at an old, decrepit, tired looking balcony of a narrow house where this romeo of the Venetian waterways wooed, caressed, and practised the art of lovemaking he believed was real love, love that may arise after sensual pleasure and, if this happened it was immortal.

From Casanova’s autobiography ‘History of My Life’, he says “I saw that everything in the world that is famous and beautiful, if we rely on the descriptions and drawings of writers and artists, always loses when we go to see it and examine it up close” Before venturing outside Australia to other countries, I was confident that I could chat about most subjects, people, historical events and considered myself well versed in general knowledge. However, I was shaken out of this complacency once I arrived at foreign destinations, and had to admit that I knew nothing compared to the real thing.

age considering that the mortality rate was high but, what a life he led. In his final years, he concentrated on his memoirs and according to his own words “to keep from going mad or dying of grief” How many of us would relish the opportunity of accomplishing what he did, seeing what he saw and experiencing it all? So much intrigue, beauty, learning and exploring the realms of music, written works, as well as diversifying his talents.

Casanova was right, one has to have been there!

FOYL Romancing at the Old Courthouse

riends Of Yankalilla Library (FOYL) met for their Morning Coffee at AussieXtreme on June 18th. Theme for the day was ‘Romance’ writing and, as usual, those who attended shared books by a range of authors from different eras and backgrounds. Georgette Heyer was a recurrent name, but other writers were Dan Brown, Jenny Maxwell, Shirley Hazzard, Charles Dickens, Richard Mason and Jane Austen. A full list of the shared books is in the Yankalilla Community Library.

DAIRY FLAT TO TORRENSVALE

aking the Range Road from Victor Harbor past Newland Hill lookout, I head west, my eyes being drawn inexorably to the right to take in the panorama of rolling hills and valleys that form part of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Ignoring the school bus route along Stone Road, I turn left instead to Cape Jervis. After a while I come to the centre of Parawa and here I turn right, heading toward the distant blue grey hills to the north and Yankalilla. Suddenly the road starts to dip and I descent into the beautiful, secluded valley that is know as Torrens Vale, bounded by Mount Hayfield to the west and Mount Robinson to the south-east. Visions of “Brigadoon” spring to mind, as downward I go into the distant past, when the original Dairy Flat became a thriving settlement, with families like the Hawkes, Gardners, Newmans and others seeking to establish a prosperous farming community for themselves and their descendents. Here there seemed to be a plentiful supply of rich, arable soil and water for their crops and dairy cattle and a mild climate far different from the extreme cold and dampness that most of them had previously experienced. And here they establish their township of Dairy Flat, which over time came to include six churches, four cemeteries, a butter factory, a post office, a blacksmith shop, schools and more. In addition, many of the settlers were skilled as stonemasons, carpenters, sawyers, boot makers and so on, a common practice in order to survive. All this came about in the mid 1800’s, after Lieutenant William Field, first mate aboard Colonel William Light’s ship Rapid, build he homestead “Hillside” at the foot of nearby Mount Hayfield in the 1830’s.

And it is Mound Hayfield which provides us with Ingalalla Falls, descending from the Parawa highlands down to Hay Flat, where travellers can picnic and walk up to the falls past the ruins of William Fields cottage, surrounded by hosts of butterflies and native birds. But alas, the falls now flow infrequently and there is little water in the valley stream. Only the ruins of a few of those early cottages remain, their sightless eyes staring blankly into space. Just one church remains, the Rockwella Baptist Church built in 1867, standing alone but stoically defiant on the old Stone Road. The valley still has an aura of peacefulness about it, but it is the peacefulness of the past history and emptiness, not of achievement and contentment. I go to Torrens Vale often and stand at the lookout point above the valley, reading the history board and taking in the scenery, trying to imagine what it must have been like 150 years ago and wondering what caused such a thriving community to disappear. Perhaps one day I will be lucky enough to again descend that hill into the valley and, like Brigadoon, the old settlement of Dairy Flat will appear before my eyes out of the mists of time!

“It gives us a chance to introduce the region to some of the most influential people in our industry in the world,” Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Marketing Manager Roz Becker says.

otcha ! Why am I so sure?

Because the three words in the headline above are the most powerful attention grabbers in our language. On the other hand, if they didn’t get your attention, you won’t be reading this anyway.

That means you won’t be disputing what I just said.

Preaching to the converted? Well, I have got you this far anyway.

The point being, when you go out to catch peoples’ attention with the written word, you must first catch their attention and then draw them in with a series of steps.

Each needs to finer tune the message with more depth, detail and interest. Keep this in mind when doing any advertising, website or patter.

Ok, what goes wrong with headlines? Firstly, making the subject you and your business and

not what is important to the target reader. A common winner headline might be a characteristic problem they are likely to face.

You do get the chance to talk about yourself though. Contacting your business is the solution and make sure you leave them with that message at the end of the text.

Don’t make it boring and try to make it specific as early as possible. You have about 20 seconds to grab their attention or

they will have moved to the next article, website or advertisement.

Don’t clutter. Keep the content to a simple few messages or even one basic one. Work and rework the text to be concise without losing clarity and meaning. Test it on a couple of unsuspecting customers first. Have a play. Try this the very next time you write a shelf talker, ad or anything that needs to be read.

Road Safety issues are brought to the attention of Victor Harbor, Alexandrina and Yankalilla Councils, Transport SA or the relevant authority.

The group has been active in advertising 25Kph speed limit passing a stationary school bus, the two-second rule to prevent rear-end collisions and promoting .05 alcohol limit on glasses and coasters in hotels and clubs.

Gopher awareness days are being arranged in the near future in Goolwa, Victor Harbor and Yankalilla.

Re: Harassed at Council meeting

o, the Bower Road to close or not to close saga continues on and on and on… As I attended and spoke at the council meeting expressing my opinion against its opening as it was quoted that nearly a million dollars would be involved to open this small section of road plus the fact that my concern was with the insufficient drainage leading to possible flooding of my property. I thought the councils handling of the meeting was more than satisfactory. Mrs Coulters remarks regarding her harassment was brought about due to her misleading statement about her claim that the petition of signatories were in favour of the opening of Bower Road when, in fact, the majority of signatories collected were against its opening. This bought about a point of order response from the majority of those present. In a democratic society if the facts presented are incorrect people have every right to object.

am extremely disturbed after reading the letter in the Yankalilla News as I was one of the group of ratepayers who attended the Council meeting to have MY say about why I thought Bower Road should remain closed, based on the information that was presented to various rate payers prior to the subcommittee of council meeting. If we have to read this public account of events, then perhaps ratepayers should read my account…. The writer certainly came professionally prepared and organised to present her case as to why Bower Road should be opened, even though the figures presented by council to do so were astronomic, for a concerned rate payer to even consider this was a viable solution when there were far more pressing issues that needed funding. Regardless, Chairman of the committee was professional and extremely sympathetic to the address, which continued well over the allotted ten minutes to put forward facts.

During the address some details were conveyed to members, which certainly caused a disruption because they were not entirely accurate. Point of Order was called out by members. (Even in Parliament members on both sides of the house can disagree with a member and are brought to order by The Speaker). In our case, members were definitely brought to order by the Chairman of the meeting. This whole case appears to me as being completely personal which is not satisfactory in a small community such as ours. Why

on earth can’t this disagreement over the boundary of the neighbours property be finally be laid to rest by Council placing a fence along same…. As it was rightly said, the proposal lapsed and can certainly be raised at a future date and, in view of all past occurrences, I honestly do not look forward to that time. Too much has been seen, read, re-read and spoken about this who personal issue regardless of the need or economic reasons for the road to “Be Open” or “Be Closed”. For all of us who live in close proximity to one another isn’t is about time that we came to our senses and looked at the real issues in the world instead of a “track” that in its present, peaceful state is enjoyed by many members of our community albeit for walking, horse riding, cycling as well as enjoying the trees, flora and fauna and wildlife that is abundant.

May I also say that it appears to me that the closed section of Bower Rd, has been left closed so the adjoining property can keep having full use of the road for their personal use. Their does not appear to be any other explanation that I can see.

I would also like to point out that the opening and sealing of Bower Road has not been decided upon as yet because Councillors refused to vote.

I look forward to your explanation as this is a Draft Budget complaint.

The 2007/08 Draft Annual Business Plan that details the Capital works program is attached (below). This program details $384,000 expenditure on road construction projects being Martin and Aldridge Rds and Stone Road The amount of $384,000 is made up of $184,000 for Aldridge /Martin Rd and $200,000 for Stone Rd. The Draft Annual Business Plan states that these two projects will be funded from the roads to recovery grant plus loan funds The roads to recovery grant is a grant received from the federal Government annually which usually is approx. $95,000 and is for Councils to spend on infrastructure projects. Council currently do not know the exact amount of this grant for $2007/08.

The difference between Councils costs in relation to the road construction expenditure and the grants received will be funded from loan funding in line with councils objective of funding long term infrastructure projects from loan funds.

The report presented to the infrastructure and planning Committee in April stated that the construction of Bower Road would cost $339,000.

Council could have allocated loan funds and grant funds for the construction of Bower road if it had in fact placed Bower road on the works program. Council however choose not to place this project on the 2007/08 capital works program.

The decision to construct Aldridge/Martin roads instead of Bower road was a decision made by council in allocating their expenditure for 2007/08. As you would be aware the report considered by the Infrastructure and Planning committee outlined the issues and process that would be followed if Council were to put the construction of Bower road on the works program.

he 2007/08 Draft Annual Business Plan stated the road construction on Aldridge and Martin Roads would cost $184,000.

13.1.4 Bower Road, Yankalilla -Traffic and Drainage Study states that Aldridge and Martin Roads would cost $180,000.

The more recent Draft Budget currently for community consultation, states Aldridge and Martin Roads would cost $384,000 13.1.4 Bower Road, Yankalilla -Traffic and Drainage Study states that Bower Road would cost $339,000.

I respectfully point out that the Aldridge/Martin construction is therefore $45 more than the cost of opening the closed section of Bower Road.

The reason I was given at the council meeting I attended, and when I requested Bower Road should be open, was that it would cost more than the sealing of Aldridge & Martin Road, which are our detour roads.

As I have pointed out on many occasions the Surveyor General's Office advised me that Council can not permanently close a road without going through their office. It is my belief that the LGA Act also states that the road can only be closed for temporary reasons, i.e.

Road repair. I am sure that does not mean you can turn a road into a garden.

I have no complaint with the construction of Aldridge & Martin Roads.

Referring to your Draft Budget re the construction of Aldridge & Martin road "This project is funded from the Federal Government Roads to Recovery Grant of $92,000 and matching loan funds".

Why was not this project sought for the opening of our access Road, Bower Road?

Project Description Road Re sheeting The reconstruction and re sheeting of Council’s unsealed road network. This program is part of Council’s overall road network improvement program which rebuilds the road, improves drainage, prolonging the life of the road and reducing Council’s unsealed road maintenance costs.

The roads to be reconstructed and re sheeted will be determined in accordance with Council's Road Hierarchy Study and Road Safety Audit.

Road Sealing Paradise Drive, Wirrina The sealed road between the resort and Marina St. Vincent suffered extensive storm damage.

The reinstatement of this road will involve the resealing of the road surface and the realignment of the culverts.

Should Council be successful in obtaining grant funding via the Local Government Disaster Fund the scope of works will be expanded.

Road Construction Martin Road / Aldridge Road Construction and sealing of Martin and Aldridge Roads which will complete the sealing program within this locality and provide residents with close access to a sealed road network.

This project is funded from the Federal Governments Roads to Recovery Grant of $92,000 and matching loan funds.

I

am writing this article in mid June , and looking out of my office window it is very cold and bleak, but never the less there are still some very keen fisherman venturing out. I was out myself a few nights ago and boy was it cold when the sun went down. I think that it is only the thought of a “big red” on the end of the line that gives you the urge to go.

We have had another reasonably quiet month with only two incidents to report. One chap had engine trouble the first time he had used his boat after just having had a major service. I think that the dealer who serviced his motor was in for a big serve. He was not a bit happy when we arrived back at the ramp with his boat in tow.

The second incident occurred when a chap had the misfortune to fall out of his boat and got a good old drenching and luckily managed to scramble back on board. When he arrived back at the ramp he made a bee line back to his car to get some dry clothes, but this was not to be as his car keys with immobiliser attached had also had a dunking and would not work. Frantic phone calls were made to try and locate his spare set of keys, but nobody was home to take the

call. To cut a long story short the marina manager had to hook the chaps trailer onto his vehicle and tow his boat away from the ramp as one lane had to be freed up. I think the chap had a long cold wait while his spare keys were being sent from Adelaide. The moral of the story is that electronics and water do not go well together.

There is a possibility that there may be some lights installed at the marina ramp. We are

negotiating with a Government agency to try and have this happen. At this stage things look fairly positive and it is only a matter of getting a signature on an order. I should have more details for next months Yankalilla News.

I hope you farmers can find that window to get the seed in and do the spraying (especially you hay makers). Our horses are sure enjoying the green grass, but some of us could do with a window ourselves to spray the local nasties.

Eventing amongst our members has been a little quieter this month. Our Waikerie contingency unfortunately missed out due to 'star driver' Denise, breaking her arm. Hope you are doing well on your holiday Dee. Also best wishes to Karen Fletcher who has also broken her leg walking the dogs… Must have been some walk!

19th and 20th MAY NARACORTE HT. Ryan and Jeri travelled down to compete. They found a huge field there, with many travelling from Victoria. Both were pleased with their results. Ryan and 'Jo' came in 11th in pre-novice and Jeri and 'Pete were 11th in Preliminary. Well done guys.

DRESSAGE - Kat popped up with 'Ollie', doing their first 'grown up' test together. They came 2nd in Junior Preparatory, and 3rd in Junior Preliminary.

3rd JUNE - OUR RALLY - held at the grounds. The weather really turned it on for us with sun shine and just a brief shower of rain. We are two instructors down now - Von with her leg (plaster off now so she’ll be back soon) and Dee with her arm. Thankyou Sally for soldiering on. Please look after yourself! Tracey Leigh also gave us the morning to instruct (with twin boys in tow) as well as Emma Dawson and Alisha Ilett. It was all flat work due to slippery conditions.

The diverse instruction was much enjoyed and appreciated. Welcome back to Dagmar (long name from Switzerland). I hope you enjoy your few months back in the area.

3rd JUNE METRO SHOWJUMPING - attended by Ryan and 'Jo'. They had a good day, coming 2nd in the 1metre. They also had fun in the derby and were doing great until 3rd last jump when the 'wrong jump skipped in front of them'. See kids, it can happen to the best of them. (sorry Ryan, couldn't resist).

17th JUNE - Our FRESHMAN'S SHOWJUMPING DAY - run by Bella. I can't really say much about this at this stage as it hasn't yet been as I write. Hopefully, we will have some photos to look at here.

23rd and 24th JUNE - Francis Figwer Memorial ODE at MONARTO – many of our members will be travelling across to compete and to also run the secretary shed.

loat in dogs has a scientific name "Gastric Dilatation/ Volvulus”. The stomach distends with gas to the point where the dog goes into shock and may die.

Dilatation means that the stomach is distended with air. Volvulus means that the distension is associated with a twisting of the stomach on its longitudinal axis.

The cause of bloat is still unknown, but it may be related to exercise after a large meal, causing the stomach to twist on itself. It could be due to abnormal stomach contractions trapping air in the stomach.

The condition usually occurs in large deep-chested breeds of dogs such as Great Danes and German Shepherds.

A stomach distended with air will cause the body wall to protrude prominently, especially on the dog's left side. The swelling will be very firm and obvious. A dog will be in pain and depressed. It may lie in what is commonly called a "praying position" with the front legs drawn fully forward and the rump up. This occurs within two to three hours.

The presence of a rapidly developing distended abdomen in a large breed dog is enough evidence to make a tentative diagnosis of GDV. An x-ray is used to confirm the diagnosis of dilatation. It can also identify the presence of volvulus, in most cases.

The condition is life-threatening.

Shock occurs because the distended stomach puts pressure on the large veins in the abdomen and the

tissues are deprived of blood and oxygen. If the blood supply is not restored quickly, the wall of the stomach begins to die and may rupture. If volvulus occurs, the spleen's blood supply will also be impaired. This organ is attached to the stomach wall.

When the stomach twists, the spleen is also rotated to an abnormal position and its vessels are compressed.

When the stomach is distended, digestion stops. This results in the accumulation of toxins that are normally removed from the intestinal tract. These toxins activate several chemicals which cause inflammation, and are absorbed into circulation. This causes problems with the blood clotting factors so that inappropriate clotting occurs within blood vessels. This is called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and is usually fatal.

Bloat is an emergency. Shock is

counteracted by the administration of large quantities of intravenous fluids. Pressure is removed from within the stomach by passing a large tube from the mouth to the stomach. The stomach must be returned to its proper position. This requires abdominal surgery which can be risky because of the dog's condition. The stomach must be attached to the abdominal wall (gastropexy) to prevent recurrence of GDV. Although this is not always successful, this procedure greatly reduces the likelihood of recurrence.

Survival will largely be determined by the severity of the distension, the degree of shock, how quickly treatment is begun, and the presence of other diseases, especially those involving the heart.

Approximately 60 to 70% of the dogs will survive.

Gastropexy will not prevent dilatation (bloat), but it will prevent volvulus in most cases.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DAIRY FARMERS GUARD AGAINST DISEASE RISK

S

outh Australian dairy farmers are implementing management programs that combine risk assessment, risk management and risk communication, to reduce emergency animal disease risk and to improve production efficiency.

Ken Smith runs a 330 Holstein/ Friesian dairy farm in the Adelaide Hills. Through his participation in the dairy industry at a state and national level, he is fully aware of the risk posed by the introduction of an emergency disease.

Mr Smith believes that South Australia is well prepared to guard against an emergency disease outbreak.

“Our local dairy authority liaises closely with industry and as an industry we are in a position to respond instantly to a disease incident,” says Mr Smith.

While each dairy enterprise designs and implements its own appropriate management plan,

steps in disease control for all dairy farms should include: obtaining health declarations and animal inspection certificates; isolating and monitoring of new stock; the purchase of fresh feed from quality assured suppliers; feral animal and pest control; a stock traceability system; and strict visitor, vehicle and equipment movement and contamination control.

Mr Smith said if producers were unsure of what good management practices encompassed they could gain a better understanding by talking to an industry representative or by checking the Australian Dairy Farmers website which outlines sound biosecurity measures.

embers were saddened by the death of our dear Life Member, Jean Maynard.

Jean has been a member of C.W.A. since joining Tantanoola branch in 1945. Jean and her husband were teachers and taught in many schools in S.A. and N.T. Wherever Jean lived she joined the nearest C.W.A. branch. She was awarded Life Membership in 1974. We miss her.

There has not been a report for a couple of months due to our reporter recovering from surgery. A brief account of our activities follows:April we had an outing to Willunga. We met members of our Link Branch and with them visited the Old Courthouse, Police Station and Slate Museum . We also enjoyed a pooled picnic lunch in the grounds. It was a lovely and interesting day.

Quite a number of people visited us and were duly impressed by the work on show.

Our May meeting was mostly given over to a business meeting as we hadn’t had one since March. Afterwards we enjoyed a Mothers Day afternoon tea together.

30th May several members went to our Group Arts/ International Day at Myponga.

Our country of study was China so the day was titled ‘The Silk Road’. Outside the weather was cold and wet but inside all was bright and cheerful as a good number of C.W.A. members and friends met together to enjoy great entertainment. We had three speakers to tell us their experiences of visits to China which were very interesting and amusing.

The Victor Harbor C.W.A. choir sang Chinese songs (in Chinese!) and performed some Chinese sketches (in English).

6th June we met at Glenda Oats house for our meeting as we were to view a video of Glenda and Barrie’s cruise around the South Pacific Islands. The Islands are very beautiful and it was nice to be transported to tropical climes for a short while.

10th June Eleven members and friends attended the S.A.C.W.A. Musical Evening at Victor Harbor in aid of the State Emergency Fund.

The entertainers were the Victor Harbor C.W.A. Choir, Heaven Knows, a capella. Four students from Victor Harbor High School played Flugelhorn, Trumpets and Keyboard, and an Organ recital was given by Andrew Baghurst.

Colin MacDonald compared the concert and read two amusing poems. Betty Tothill, S.A.C.W.A. Arts Officer and Past State President spoke to the audience about our State Emergency Fund. It was a wonderful evening, well attended and was sponsored by various local businesses which will enable the whole of the proceeds to go the Emergency Fund for Drought Relief.

Well, that’s about it.

We have been busy haven’t we? Our next meeting will be on the 4th July at 1.30 p.m. at our Bungala Street Cottage. This will be our A.G.M. so please do try to come along.

NORMANVILLE BUSHWALKERS

e enjoyed our annual weekend at Tappa Nappa cottage during the long weekend. There was quite a crowd; 8 sleeping in the house, 8 outside and other day visitors. Saturday afternoon was spent settling in and we had an enjoyable evening, eating, drinking and playing convivial games. On Sunday we walked the Aaron Creek Trail, which leads to Tim Stokes memorial bench. We visited it as homage to Tim and also to check on the condition of the bench. It was fine, weathering to a silvery grey, blending in with the surrounding trees. We had lunch at the bench before splitting into two groups;

some returning to the car park and the others going down to the sea. We were a more subdued bunch on Sunday night, the exercise having its usual effect. The weather deteriorated during the night, howling winds and rain, much to the concern of those camped outside. By 10.30 on Monday we had packed up and cleaned the house. We finished up at Lilla’s for a final cup of coffee. We all enjoyed the weekend very much, lots of good food, drinks and great company.

• As the demand for our services increases our reception staff are experiencing a corresponding increase in the number of telephone calls at peak times. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but it will remain necessary to plan and book ahead. Your patience is appreciated.

• Navtej Sandhu has recently left the surgery, to work closer to the city and his home. He worked at the clinic for eighteen months and enjoyed his time in Normanville.

We would like to thank the patients who supported him during this time at the surgery.

• Megan Brazier from Normanville, has recently been employed by “Southern Fleurieu Health Service” as a dietician. She will be working in the surgery regularly and we would like to congratulate her on her appointment and look forward to working with her in the future.

• GARDISIL, a vaccine aimed at prevention of cervical cancer in young women will be available in late June 2007, through the school immunisation program for girls 9 17. All females in Australia aged 9– 26 years will be offered this vaccine free of charge, through the school vaccination program or at the surgery from July 2007. There has recently been some “poor publicity”

about the side effects of the vaccine, but the side effects of the vaccine are minimal, similar to other vaccines eg flu vaccine and other childhood immunisations. The vaccine immunises against “Human Papilloma Virus”, HPV, with 3 injections, one initially, the second at two months and the third at six months. (normal cost $450 for a course) HPV is linked to cervical cancer and 70% of women will become infected with at least on HPV virus in their lifetime. There are 100 HPV types and HPV types 16 & 18 cause 70% of cervical cancers and 50% of high grade smear abnormalities. The vaccination is aimed at types 16,18,6 & 11. The vaccine offers 100% protection against types 16 & 18 and decreases the incidence of cervical cancer in those vaccinated by 62% and also gives protection against genital warts. Transmission of HPV is very soon after the first sexual contact, 30% of women infected after 18 months and 60% after 4 years. It is a disease of young women and vaccination is highly recommended. I will be talking to the students at school about the vaccine and a fact sheet will be available at the surgery for those interested. Students can have the vaccine at the surgery if they do not wish to have it at school. Please make an appointment with your doctor if you are confused or need more information.

• Vitamin D is essential for strong bones and prevention of osteoporosis. Vitamin D absorption is dependent on sunlight. In winter we are not exposed to as much sunlight and because we cover up from the sun in summer, many patients will be Vit D deficient and will be at risk of developing osteoporosis. Vit D deficiency also causes muscle weakness and fatigue, so ask your doctor to check your level with a simple blood test.

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

“They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 As indicated last month Church teaching runs counter to the inspired word of God. Man does not possess an immortal soul that lives on after death. As we have shown over a number of years Bible teachings have been corrupted over time. We will let the Bible speak of its Truths.

The soul of man is not immortal but the very opposite as the Scriptures plainly state: “the soul that sinneth it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:20) So what does this word ‘soul’ mean? It is the word that the English translators of the Bible primarily employed in translating the Hebrew word ‘nephesh’ or the Greek word ‘psuche’. It is first used during the Creation of man, animal, birds and fish. Here is how it is used in Genesis 2:7 describing the Creation of man. “And the

LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (nephesh)”.

At the creation of the animal kingdom: “and God said , Let the earth bring forth the living creature (nephesh)” and again sea and bird life; “let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life (nephesh) and the fowl’ Although the English translators have used ‘creature’, ‘soul’ and ‘life’; the one underlying Hebrew word is ‘nephesh’ whether man, animal, fish or fowl. This tells us that ‘soul’ simply means ‘living breathing creature’. Isn’t that all we mean when we say, the ship sunk with the loss of all souls on board?

So in the Bible the word NEVER expresses the idea of immortality; or of some divine spark that lives on after death. In fact it expresses the opposite. For example we read of the war in Israel under the

leadership of Joshua: “ and they smote all the souls (nephesh) with the edge of the sword . . . there was not any left to breath”. (Josh 11:11) The fact that souls or living breathing creatures are destructible is clearly taught throughout all Scripture whether Old or New Testament. Someone once gave me a chart they had compiled after exhaustively navigating the complete Bible to see what happened to souls? I publish it for your information: What happens to souls?

Old Testament - New Testament (‘nephesh’) (‘psuche’) Subject to death 326 times - 45 In danger of death 203 - 29 Delivered from death 123 - 16 Looking at this table and not finding any link between soul and immortality shows the fallacy of a belief in the immortality of the soul.

However immortality is a wonderful subject of promise in the Bible. The Apostle Peter wrote;

“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature”. i.e. immortality (2 Peter 1:4) So immortality is available by being in receipt of certain promises that were made by God. Once understanding them and covenanting with God for them, a way of life is enjoined upon the believer. So the Apostle Paul wrote; “To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life:” (Rom 2:7). Eternal life, if granted, only comes says Paul when: “this mortal shall put on immortality”. (1 Cor 15:53) i.e. a complete bodily change takes place.

Helen says “one was in Adelaide, at the Rex Hotel at which 30 people attended . It was like a mini reunion with a lot of the Nurses I used to work with coming along and it was great reminiscing with my old colleagues also with my

lovely Daughter Deborah and Grand Daughter Jaclyn. My son Steven was working and will catch up as soon as he can.

My Stepdaughter Suellen from Victoria travelled over for the occasion with her partner Glen.

Friends from all over Adelaide including my Ambulance friends I still work with in the EMT Ambulance South Australia a great time was enjoyed by all.

Gopher Safety Awareness Sessions

M

obility Scooters, colloquially known as Gophers, are steadily increasing in number on the Fleurieu Peninsular with Councils, Road Safety Groups and other organizations becoming increasingly concerned for the safety of road users, particularly the elderly.

For this reason the Fleurieu Road Safety Group, with funding from the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, is well advanced in organising safety awareness sessions in the area. With the co-operation of the South Australian Police, Alexandrina and Victor Harbor Councils, the Independent Living Centre and others we will be presenting special sessions in Goolwa and Victor Harbor during September.

“Trust is a very precious gift”

The sessions are aimed at anyone remotely interested in the safety, purchase, operation and laws relating to Gophers. The S.A. Police will talk about the special application of the law as it relates to mobility scooters and a council representative will talk about the special infrastructure needs for them.

Specialists from the Independent Living Centre will describe the several aspects of the occupational health and safety issues.

Apart from the talks, representatives from the retail industry will be in attendance to offer help with purchasing and maintenance issues and there will be displays from various organizations supporting the programme.

There will be a light lunch and door prizes with lots of handouts.

Organisations and individuals are encouraged to attend and take part in the sessions to be held at the Council chambers in Goolwa on 18th September and in Victor Harbor on 20th September. Interested residents in Yankalilla will be transported by bus to the Victor Harbor meeting.

Fleurieu Families Home Visiting Program will continue

S

ince 1997 the Fleurieu Families Home Visiting program, formerly known as Families First, has been providing support for families in the Fleurieu who are experiencing tough times. Recently Wendy Kruger, project manager, received a letter from the Minister for Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough.

This letter brought the exciting news that the program has $54,000 funding to continue operating for the next 12 months until June 2008. The certainty of another 12 month period means that Wendy can carry out a new volunteer recruitment drive.

Over the past 10 years, families from the three council regions of the District Council of Yankalilla, City of Victor Harbor, and the Alexandrina Council, have benefited from the committed support of volunteer Parent Support Workers from Fleurieu Families Home Visiting.

These amazingly committed people can provide: A confidential person to talk to, to help get things in perspective Information about support and services in the local area Support when attending appointments with community agencies (e.g. school, Centrelink) Here’s what one parent has to say about Fleurieu Families Home Visiting.

“I read a pamphlet about Fleurieu Families and felt that my baby and I could benefit from the Volunteer Home Visiting Program which they provide. I rang Fleurieu Families, and after an initial meeting, was allocated a volunteer who would visit us at home on a weekly basis.

I found this service to be invaluable. I was having difficulty with my infant’s sleep patterns at the time, and the volunteer was able to give me some fantastic advice. Just having a person I could talk to about all sorts of issues in relation to my baby and knowing it was completely confidential, was wonderful.

I highly recommend Fleurieu Families Home Visiting to any new mum who would enjoy having some in-home support and advice.”

per week with a family. They receive free orientation training which runs for one day per week over six weeks. During this time their learning includes effective communication, child protection issues, awareness of some of the difficulties facing parents today, and knowledge of the services that are available to families in the region.

“We enjoy helping people. The training we get is really good and interesting; we learn how to listen to people and learn about issues like domestic violence.” Anne Johncock, a volunteer with the program, says.

There are currently 22 volunteers in the program but more are required. Wendy is especially keen to recruit volunteers in Yankalilla / Normanville, Mt Compass, and Goolwa. Volunteers are often required to travel to a town that they don’t live in, to support a family. This helps protect the privacy of both families and volunteers in small towns. However all out-of-pocket expenses, including mileage, are reimbursed through the program.

Volunteer Sue Shelley said she really likes the opportunity to meet new people, “I enjoy the interaction with our clients and the other volunteers,” she said. The benefits are clear for the volunteers as well as the families they

support. Volunteers are provided with ongoing monthly support meetings and further training opportunities, at minimal or no cost. While this benefits the families they work with, it doesn’t harm the volunteer’s resume either!

Cantankerous Cow

H

ave you hand milked a cow?

In years past the cows were milked by hand – often involving Dad, Mum and the kids. First up, they had to be rounded up and, often from the far corner of the paddock.

Each cow had to put her head into a bale where a long hinged piece of wood would be brought across her neck and a pin put through it to keep her in place. She was then able to munch some feed from a manger.

While they chewed away they were quite content, but when their tucker ran out they became fidgety.

Some were downright cantankerous and lashed out with their legs. To cop a kick from a cow is no joke.

Often the bucket of milk went flying and some unrepeatable words were heard.

Very few do it by hand these days. I milk one in partnership with a calf.

She’s one of those temperamental types and can kick like blazes. She makes me walk a long way to get her in and takes every detour on the way. Once she’s in the cattle crush I leg-rope her to keep us safe from brutal kicks.

A young guy offered to help and I hoped that he would milk her when I was away. I got her in, tied her leg back and then left him to it. Later, some loud abusive words rang out.

The cow had kicked him as he was undoing the rope.

I got a lecture: ‘Why are you putting up with a cow like this? Why don’t you dry her off and be done with all the inconvenience and danger?’ ‘It’s because of my ferret,’ I said.’

‘Whaat?’ he said, ‘your ferret!

You’ve got to be joking.’

‘Well, you see, my ferret loves warm cow’s milk.’ ‘Do you mean to say you’re going through all of this morning and night because of your ferret?’ retorted my offsider, ‘– you must be crazy.’ ‘But I love my ferret, and he loves warm milk?’ I said in self defence.

I could see his point but he found it hard to accept mine and refused to have anything more to do with the cow. Why be so inconvenienced for a ferret?

Inconvenience People will be inconvenienced.

Some have gone without so that their kids could be educated or have some special opportunity. Others have committed themselves to caring for the disabled and unfortunate.

that young person learn about and communicate to her dark and silent world. The deaf blind girl was the renown Helen Keller.

I once knew a fellow who only had use of his head. He wrote with his mouth. A lovely girl befriended him and eventually married him. I recall watching her winch him from his wheel chair to the car seat and thinking about her huge commitment. Through her help he became a Christian pastor.

There for others The life and work of Jesus exemplified inconvenience for others. He said: ‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

The self giving of Jesus awes the mind. He said, ‘… I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.’ He described supreme sacrifice in these words: ‘Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.’ John 15:13 Some of the most incredible verses in the Bible are found in Romans 5:6-8 ‘For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone

would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’

We can understand someone giving their life for a special person but who would do it for enemies? Jesus did. On the cross he took the place of the vilest of men and died for their sins.

In the person of Jesus God was inconvenienced for us. We need to know why. Because he loves us even in spite of who or what we are – or even what we think of him.

That is incredible to me – that one so great that he could create a universe and yet love us so much that he came to this world to save us.

y dear wife, Rosalie, reckons that I world get a stand-up start in the British show, ‘Grumpy Old Men’. It may be a tad more difficult now that I have become an Australian citizen! But I know what she means. Perhaps I really am becoming more and more grumpy, cantankerous and caustic! I am also finding that there are some things that are difficult to believe.

Now, I am not saying that I am having difficulties with my faith in God. I do have problems in being alone with him as often as I would like. However, I am having very real difficulties with my faith in my fellow human beings.

I was appalled that, in the middle of the floods in and around Newcastle last weekend, people took it upon themselves to take whatever they wanted from stores and hotels that had been damaged by the floods.

There were even reports of thefts from private homes affected by the floods. Just how low can a human being stoop? I wonder why I was so shocked by these actions. I think it was the fact that we were not spectators to actions a long way away from our shores. It was

happening here!

Closer to home, we have had the revelations of the theft of road spikes left behind by a policeman and the theft of papers from a policeman’s car. It has become an almost nightly event to hear of the rampages of the ‘Gang of 49’ with car thefts, high speed chases and increasingly more dangerous robberies. The lack of respect for the other person is shown in the senseless weekend bashings outside hotels and other venues. It shows in acts of road rage.

A few weeks ago, I was walking down Ocean Street in Victor Harbor, when a young man in front of me—he should probably have been at school—threw his empty flavoured milk container on the ground. I suggested that it might be a good idea to pick it up. To which he retorted, ‘Why don’t ya #@*! off, ya *%#!’ Charming!! It would have been so much more pleasing if the young man had picked up his rubbish. It would have been even better if he had voluntarily put it in a rubbish bin.

It seems to me that people these days do what they want, when they

Yet if we are going to survive, we have to believe in people. We have to trust one another. I know that Jesus tried just that with His disciples and failed with some of them. However, Jesus never stopped trusting the disciples and believing that they were capable of great good. Jesus’ faith in human nature never wavered. He was prepared to take risks with people—people like Peter, who let

Him down time after time; and Paul who had taken great delight in persecuting the early Christians.

These men were given another chance to prove that they were up to the task they had been selected for and could be trusted.

In the same way as the father welcomed back the prodigal son, so God welcomes each one of us back.

God never loses faith in us. In return for that great gift, we should do our best not to lose faith in other people, hard as it might be. And I know, sometimes, that is going to be very hard indeed.

he Normanville SLSC held it’s Annual Presentation Night at the club rooms on Saturday 12 th May. Ken Toseland our Club President, welcomed fellow members and guests on the night. Official guests included Mayor Peter Whitford and his wife Madge, President of Aldinga SLSC, Peter Symons and his wife Vicki and Club Patrons, Graham and Rosemary Olsson.

The presentation night was an opportunity for the Club to honour members who have provided outstanding service throughout the season and also to award those who have obtained surf life saving qualifications during the 2006-2007 season.

Geoff Moffatt, MC on the night, and Club Secretary, read a summary of a rescue carried out on Australia Day in which patrol members rescued a windsurfer under difficult conditions. This is a reminder of the importance of the presence of NSLSC patrol members in assisting the community to safely enjoy our beautiful beach.

Keep your eye out for posters that tell you more around town.

The Club is also planning to hold a “New Year’s Eve in August”.

We are planning a Spit roast in front of the Club followed by karaoke and of course the big count down. Date is yet to be confirmed.
