ello Readers, We have arrived at the middle of the year already, or end of the financial one if that is how your calendar works. Don’t forget to call into the Newsagency for any end of financial year requirements. Including those pesky tax office forms.

The coldest S.A. days on record has bought some beautiful sights throughout the Fleurieu.

We have had ice, fog and it had to be snowing somewhere or did it just feel like it!

The big local issue this month is the adoption of the 2006-07 budget by Yankalilla Council. See page 36 for an update.

All those with kerbside rubbish pickup should be getting their new recycling bins in the next couple of weeks. When using the bins don't forget that some local not-for-profit charities rely on your recyclables for their fundraising. This means that if they go in the bin provided, they will by-pass these groups. Just something to think about.

Clarice Wheaton should be in China as this edition is distributed. Great effort to win a national competition by a local 10 year old girl.

The Friends of the Rapid Bay Jetty will have had a meeting with Patrick Conlon and others by the time this edition hits the stand. We will have to wait and see what the outcome will be. There is

some talk about redirecting monies for Rapid Bay Jetty to Normanville Jetty. Hmmm… probably (hopefully) just a rumour of unknown origin. Although the mere thought of it has upset a few of ‘The Friends’ and jetty supporters in the community.

Below is a jetty at a little town near Streaky Bay called Wirrulla. It seams the residents wanted a jetty and their council backed it so they got a jetty. The town however is nowhere near the coast and the jetty is high and dry! One of our readers sent it in to see if the community could see the irony in the fact they have jetty but no water, whilst we have water but don’t have full use of the jetty, what the...?

Volunteer Recognition Evening

ver 120 people gathered for a fabulous evening on 12th June to celebrate South Australia’ Volunteer Day. The District Council of Yankalilla hosted the evening, inviting registered Council volunteers and their partners. 151 people generously give of their time and talent back to the community through volunteering in operations of Council. Some of these projects are solely Council run, others are carried out in partnership with other groups.

Council is only one organisation in the Yankalilla district who have volunteers. It has been mooted that probably 99% of people who live here also volunteer here in one way or another.

Volunteering happens in or through the not-forprofit sector of our community which includes community, health and welfare, sports and recreation, art and culture, environment, child, youth and aged services, education and emergency services. In this district there is a culture of getting involved and volunteering.

Volunteering Australia reports that 6.3 million Australians give a total of 836 million hours a year in volunteering. This means 41% of Australians volunteer. The statistics state that 70% of volunteers are also paid employment. Researchers estimate the monetary contribution of volunteering to be in the tens of billions annually. Volunteering Australia report the reasons people give for volunteering include: ‘being of service to the communit y’ (47%) and ‘personal

satisfaction’ (43%).

Some of the comments made by volunteers registered with Council about why they volunteer included: ‘ because it’s fun’, ‘it’s a challenge’, ‘opportunity to help others’, ‘learn new things”, ‘one way I can give back’, ‘very satisfying’, and ‘meet new people’.

Council volunteers are involved in: • Yankalilla Community Library • Yankalilla Bay Visitor Information Centre • Transport service through the Combined Christian Churches Community Care Car as drivers, companions and coordinators.

• Youth programs through The Edge, Yankalilla Youth and Community Centre Planning Group, Planning groups for Youth Events.

• Council’s Reference Groups which include: • Leafy Sea Dragon Festival Steering Group • Economic Development Reference Group • Community Services Reference Group • Regional Programs such as Fleurieu Families • Elected Members.

As Volunteering Australia’s slogan says, Volunteers Make the Difference. This is true for all volunteers in this district.

The Mayor on behalf of Elected Members and staff would like to thank each person for their generosity in sharing their time, skills and talents with the community through these programs of Council.

Mexican theme at Normanville Beach Café

une 3rd saw the start of a series of themed Saturday night celebrations at the Normanville Beach Café. The Mexican theme for the evening saw locals and visitors brave the elements to attend the café which was redecorated for the evening and featured a special ‘Mexican’ menu. Those who dressed up for the evening were in the running for a prize for the best dressed. The atmosphere was fantastic with Tequila Slammers and Coronas aplenty. The menu included nachos, stuffed chilli fritters, chicken skewers, tacos with guacamole, meatballs on rice, lime cured fish, burritos and mango tart for desert. Not to mention the odd hot chilli for inner warmth and a wood heater to keep the winter weather outside. Theme nights continue each fortnight through until November.

LOCAL GIRL OPENS COVEYANCING OFFICE IN NORMANVILLE

A

my Hunt ( n e e Fretwell) began her career in property after completing a Legal Secretarial Certificate in Adelaide and was employed by a Normanville Real Estate Agent. After working in Property Management and completing a Traineeship in Business Administration, Amy was offered a position working as a Sales Administrator at a another local Real Estate. After four years of working for the Agent and studying her Diploma in Conveyancing at night, Amy accepted a position with Adcock Conveyancing a renowned Conveyancing firm in Hindmarsh. Here she completed her studies and became a Registered Conveyancer. Amy continued to work in Hindmarsh after her son was born, until early this year. With the support of her

work colleagues, family and friends Amy opened her own Conveyancing business in her hometown.

Having always lived in Normanville, Amy has strong ties to the community. Amy’s dad owns Gums N’ Roses Gardening Service and employs her two brothers. Amy’s mum is a volunteer Ambulance Officer in Yankalilla and Amy’s husband plays football for Yankalilla. Amy plays basketball locally and their son goes to childcare at Yankalilla.

COASTAL RECYCLING AND LIONS CLUB YANKALILLA

ic hae l a nd Ma nd y Aistrope the proprietors of Coastal Recycling would like to advise that although kerbside recycling is about to begin, it is business as usual.

Kerbside recycling is primarily designed to remove recyclable product from general waste product thus saving landfill. As the brochure produced by the council points out many products including 5 cent

deposit containers and newspapers can be recycled but no-one will get the dollar value benefit of these products if they are placed in these bins.

We would strongly suggest that you bring your 5 cent deposit c o n t a i n er s i n t o C o a s ta l Recycling at Bartlett Place for your refund or drop them to the Scouts for their benefit ( you can also leave them at coastal recycling and advise that they

are for the Scouts or the New Years Eve Pageant) and newspaper should be taken to the Lions newspaper recycling depot behind the museum.

The donation of the newspaper to the Yankalilla Lions group is a major fundraiser with all the monies raised being spent on our community.

It should also be noted that Coastal Recycling will continue to receive all non deposit

containers and materials as it always has which include many items that cannot go into your kerbside recycling bin such as: car batteries, plastic bags, and general steel items etc. So if your bin is full or it is more convenient for you to bring your product into us we are only too pleased to assist.

‘One for the road’ turns into 20,000 drinks for Judith & Ian, of Normanville.

W

h i l e wo r ki n g through a Women & the Environment Module at TAFE in Victor Harbor, Judith Uppill found herself studying a number of local environmental issues and producing a Pictorial Recycling Assignment.

Her studies involved an investigation and pick up on both sides of the Yankalilla to Victor Harbor Road as far as the Cemetery (a distance of ½ km), on Sunday 8/8/2004.

The surprising amount of rubbish she found prompted Judith to contact KESAB. Following this contact, and with the assistance of her very willing husband Ian, she decided to combine their love of the outdoors, exercise and environmental care by joining KESAB’s Road Watch program.

The program aims to improve So u th Au s tr a li a’ s road s id e environment and appearance and so in August 2004, Judith and Ian ‘adopted’ parts of Willis Drive and Wattle Flat Road, and began voluntary litter clean ups.

‘When we first came to the area we were really encouraged to see someone taking good care of the streetscape by regularly picking up litter and broken glass and rescuing discarded recyclables otherwise destined for landfill’ said Judith.

‘We later discovered that this was Lorraine Fogden - a local resident’.

Judith had met with Lorraine, and armed with some fairly inspiring TAFE studies under her belt decided to put something back into the local environment and build on the good work Lorraine had been doing.

With Ian assisting, she decided to get started and set aside a community fund for any money raised from 5cent deposit containers

found discarded on their roadside patch and from around the town centre - little did they know that this would grow to $1000, representing a fairly staggering haul of over 20,000 empty drink containers!

Judith and Ian have been talking with local council about installing a bench made of recycled plastic as a way of putting this money back into the local community. This would provide another suitable resting place for many of our senior citizens to rest their weary legs.

The Yankalilla Council area has two other groups involved in the

KESAB program – Rapid Bay Primary School & the Yankalilla Rotary Club - who are part of over two hundred groups across South Australia helping to care for local roadside verges.

‘It really would be great to see more people involved in programs like KESAB’S Road Watch & Tidy Towns’ said Judith , ‘Many hands make light work - the area has so much to offer and these sorts of initiatives can provide a framework for our area to be proud.’

he U13 Yankalilla Hockey team is growing. With the season half way through, we still regularly have 16 players each Saturday willing and eager to play and possibly 3 more to come. Any new player is still welcome to come out and have a go on Wednesdays at 4pm at the hockey grounds in Yankalilla.

All players are showing strong improvement each week and have been able to score but not enough to get our first win for the season.

The women are currently second on the ladder while the men are sliding downwards.

In July we have 3 home games so it would be great to have more spectators.

do not know whether conditions are so improved in 2006 as compared with some 40 years ago but, for this former country policeman’s family in 1958 moving from the city to Eyre Peninsula was a shift that is still remembered so many years later.

Being the first time for us, us being me, husband and six month old daughter, it was a real ‘learning curve’ (a term not heard of then).

From travelling overnight to Port Lincoln on the mv “Minnipa”, a bumpy trip with a rough passage through the Althorpes, a pound note (given to us by hubbie’s mother) to help us out until payday a week away, to not knowing what awaited us in our new placement.

We had to find our own way to our trust home accommodation, (about 2 miles from the wharf) no-one to meet us and, naturally our furniture and possessions, sparse as they were, had not arrived either. If ever one felt like telling the department what to do with their country transfers, this was certainly it.

Now our home for the next couple of years was something else again. The gate would not open, but this was explained by the neighbour who told us that the previous occupant, my husband being his replacement, had never opened the gate in all the time he had been stationed there, he would just fall over it upon his return from the pub!

This should have given us an inkling but, only when inside did we get the full picture. Windows never been opened, jammed up with blowflies (much easier to push window down to trap them until they died) The cooking appliance was a Simpson wood stove, and the heating for the bath water (tin bath over a outlet hole in the floor) was a chip heater. The stove wouldn’t light up until we had cleaned out two rubbish bins full of soot, the bath water ran all over the floor as the hole was jammed with chop bones and other unidentified matter.

Our meagre possessions eventually arrived not in a pantechnicon but a small covered ute. Before we left Adelaide friends and rellies must have had a good cleanout as we certainly were richer by so many useless and varied objects.

The two police drivers celebrated their arrival with a gift of some home brewed vino, the taste of which could be likened to someone having trod grapes with their socks on but, who were we to complain? We had a frig but, no money to buy food with and payday not due for another week.

Then we thought that if hubbie’s father (a police sgt ) would not hesitate to help any of his men out in emergencies, then our new sgt would do likewise. Before we could approach this unknown OIC, a soon to be workmate from the station dropped in and put us right about borrowing from the station sgt, instead he loaned us 10 pounds and said to pay it back when we had it, as he knew what our circumstances were like, he had been there and done that himself.

Those first months in our new location were the worst we encountered, and times were tough for a few years but, we learnt how to cope and live on practically nothing. Of course being in the country, people were so helpful and shared whatever they had in times of need, for which we were grateful, and we were able to return the favours when someone else was transferred and we recognised their situation so much like ours upon arrival.

We were eventually allocated a brand new police house, no rent to pay, big rooms and, we furnished it gradually to our preferences. Still not much money around, especially with three kids to support.

We did not own a washing machine, car or a television but, made our own fun by on frequent occasions going for an outing in a borrowed car and towing a trailer to pick stumps. Now picking stumps was a two fold exercise, as farmers were only too glad to allow people to pick stumps from their fields so they could plant their crops, at the same time we got our firewood for free. On these outings, we would have a barbie, no weber for us, just a plough share with holes drilled attached to screw-in tripod legs (necessity being the mother of invention) and I can still taste those barbies to this day. Other times, we would take the three kids along the railway line and pickup discarded coal from the steam trains for our sitting room fire.

The police station only had a motorbike and sidecar for transport and it was years before a car was allocated.

On one occasion there was a call-out for assistance just after we had arrived, a pub brawl. Hubbie and sarge

headed off for one of the many Lincoln pubs. Sarge gave directions for the longest route, when this was queried, hubbie was told “ no hurry, we don’t want to get all dirtied up, so we will get there in time after the worst is over, it will be sorted out by the time we get there” In those days, the country policeman could threaten larrikins by telling their fathers who would apply their own penalties, it was a good deterrent as years later, these same kids would come up and thank hubbie for not being too harsh on them, they could have had a criminal record.

We had good officers but, occasionally there would be a misfit. One such bloke liked the drink too much and in those days, confiscated alcohol was locked away.

However, when on late night shift at the station, this particular chap was sneaking a drink from the confiscated booze, only detected when it was noticed that the levels of the bottles were always different. Turns out that the contents had been topped up with cold tea! The particular officer was consequently transferred.

We had a good local doctor very dedicated but, really down on alcohol related offences. No breathalysers in those days and when the doc was called to the police station to test an ‘over the limit’ suspect, he had a quick and reliable system. He would strew matches on the floor and tell the suspect to pick them all up, without falling over. The doc certainly wasn’t going to waste his time and hang around for long.

Occasionally, someone would draw the short straw and have to do a prisoner escort up country. This meant going by train, the trip there and back took a day each way and hubbie always reckoned that the train had square wheels.

Then there was the trip to Adelaide for court and sentencing. Aboard the trusty mv Minnipa once again, all the blokes got was their fare paid, never mind about meals etc in between.

When our division was upgraded, we were appointed a visiting inspector from Adelaide, these visits entailed travelling to all country one man stations throughout the Eyre Peninsular.

On one particular trip, they had travelled about half way when, without warning this big buck roo appeared right in front of the car. Usually, roo’s have more sense than sheep usually but, on this occasion the roo didn’t swerve right, or left, but ended up on the bonnet, through the windscreen onto the inspector’s lap. Apart from being a bit frightened, neither the ‘roo or the inspector were injured. To put this in the vernacular, if the inspector had been constipated, then this would have been a most effective laxative ever!

Seriously though, it was a frightening experience and, not one to make fun of, yet it was a topic of conversation for months after the inspector had returned to Adelaide.

From that time, pre-requisites for all vehicles classed as country allocated were all fitted with ‘roo’ bars as some protection.

No matter how difficult and hard were the times sometimes, the good certainly outweighed the bad.

I can still recall sharing our Christmas dinner with those who were lucky enough to be rostered off. In those days, the fishing industry was in its infancy and, even then crayfish was a luxury. However, for a ‘bob’ (10 cents) each we could buy a sugar bag of cray bodies (about 10 to a bag). There is nothing so good as squatting on a kitchen floor (lino – easy to clean up) with bottles of beer, vinegar, pepper and salt, bread and butter, and pigging out on cray bodies, finger licking good!

One year we had two naval vessels visit Lincoln, a destroyer and aircraft carrier. With an influx of some hundreds of sailors let loose on the innocent local females, police reinforcements had to be brought in. That weekend certainly left its imprint on the town for many months to come, with a slight population swelling as well.

So for any past or present country station serving police officers, this is just a taste of our experiences in the years we spent in the country, years that may have started off in the unknown but ended with a wealth of genuine and real friendships made and, even in tough times we still enjoyed it.

Without becoming too close, we found that it was a good idea to take an interest in the local scene and be aware in a quiet, unobtrusive manner of what was going on in the town. The ‘gung ho ‘ attitude was not acceptable and, it was made obvious that the ‘softly, softly’ approach improved the public relations aspect.

This term has been a busy one with the children from both the kindy and care having photos taken (a memory of happy days and friends). Also the children visited the school to hear the police band. n Friday May 19th the years 5-7 girls participated in the South Australian Primary Schools Association netball carnival at Strathalbyn.

With a mixed team of novice and experienced players the girls approached the day with enthusiasm and great team spirit.

What a happy team at the end of the day after playing four games and winning them all!

Teddy Bears’ Breakfast

he students of Rapid Bay wore their pyjamas, slippers and dressing gowns to school on Friday 26th May. Upon arrival the students enjoyed a teddy bear breakfast of porridge, honey, toast and warm Milo.

Later in the day they entered their teddies in the teddy bear contest and then voted for the most popular bear which was won by Brianna’s bear. Other categories were also awarded. The students and bears were very lucky to have their prizes and certificates presented by Mr Michael Pengilly (below) who visited the school that day.

The 4-7 class raised money to send to the Free The Bears Fund in preparation for their stay at the zoo in December.

Caleb and Gary spent many weeks filming, editing and producing ‘Caleb’s Cat Crisis’, the tale of Caleb’s cat Emma who goes missing when Caleb takes her to school for show and tell. We followed Emma on her search for Caleb and their reunion.

The film was received warmly by the discerning audience, who were just as amused by the credits as they were with the film.

General consensus awarded the film a “5 star” rating.

I’ve always been fascinated with Egyptian artefacts and priced them, the one I particularly liked was $79.00. I thought to myself how could I justify spending that amount of money when there were more practical things to buy for the B & B. So I walked out and thought no more of it. About a month later on returning all the items seemed to be still in place, nobody seem to want them. It seemed like everybody was avoiding them. I could understand some statues did look ugly, I mean a humanoid with a

But the one that intrigued me was the one in a knee stance holding two vessels wearing hooded attire with the ‘asp’ on the head. I had had some guests in the previous night and I thought caution to the wind. “I’ll have that statue please,” I said. Once I said that there was no turning back and I handed over $80.00 my nights B & B money. The attendant gave me a dollar change and being alongside the Yank Hotel I thought perhaps a cup of coffee in the Pokey room and blow that last dollar. I had Egypt on my mind and for some reason decided to play the Egyptian machine to keep the theme going, on the second push the games came up, believe it or not. Magic I thought, up came the payout , exactly $80.00. I got out of there like a startled gazelle. What luck for a change.

Perhaps there is something in this bloody Egyptian. I took it home but everywhere I placed it, it just didn’t seem to fit. I rang my daughter that night and told her about my luck.

She said “far out” Dad, you should put it along side the antique organ by the guestroom door. I did, it looked perfect, now she said when you buy a cross lotto ticket place it in one of the urns he is holding. “Which one” I said, that’s for me to work out I suppose. That week I asked the girl at Jelfies Newsagencies for a ticket. “Which one” she said. Give me a system 8 for a change. The next Sunday I got the Sunday Mail and believe it or not it paid $199.00. Over the year or so I’ve had a few 3 and a sup and one straight 4 numbers. So it has become a ritual with a few John Cleese anecdotes if nobody is around to listen if things don’t work out. Who knows, perhaps, oh well dreams are free.

hich became a lovely thought as a poem from a mother to a daughter and the knowledge that it was a privilege to have this child. I really resonated with this on mothers day, and spent all day in celebration of all mothers who had the honour of having their blessed children. I had a most glorious time, and was on the phone to all my friends, daughters, and people who meant so much to me, many hours passed with such meaningful conversations, not just a quick commercial greeting, and as I shared my joy and my energy, all the mothers I phoned began to feel this joy within them, and they too felt like sharing and so the whole day went. All of us having the same glorious fulfilment, for we are all mothers. This was the best mothers day I have ever had and it all started here, with a poem for one of my precious daughters, and of course the love went out to all the daughters, and all the mothers.

What a blast , as the doors of heaven were blown open, and the energy and love went all around the world to my sisters as well.

GALLERY 88 and YANKALILLA ART GROUP

Yankalilla Art Group A well prepared and industrious session was held at our last meeting under the guiding hands of our own Betty Gubbin. For all those budding artists starting out in water colour, they could not have had such an inspiring and patient tutor. Five members of our group took advantage of her experience, knowledge and skills, producing a finished painting by the end of the day. As a struggling exponent of this particular medium I even managed a passable picture at the third attempt. Thank you, Betty. Part of my learning curve; it is always advisable to have the correct equipment to do the job, particularly when it comes to paper. I have now come to the conclusion that the ‘Archibald’ has nothing to fear from me in this media!

Our August guest tutor has yet to confirm. All members will be notified as soon as possible.

Gallery 88 It has been encouraging to learn that our Art Trail Brochure is doing a good job. Quite a few of our visitors have found their way to the gallery via this brochure and many of them have purchased our crafts and paintings which can be good for our members and the gallery as a viable part of our community.

There are a number of exhibitions planned for the end of the year and, of course, we will be participating in the 2007 Leafy Sea Dragon Festival.

In September Roe Gartleman will be exhibiting some of her astounding art work, also sharing the exhibition will be the beautiful porcelain dolls created by Pat Chibnal, and possibly, the intricate silver ware designed and made by Pat Hagan.

In November gallery 88 will be an invited member of the Fleurieu Peninsular Biennale. An exhibition will be mounted by our members at the gallery depicting the flora, fauna, landscapes and seascapes of the Fleurieu entitled ‘A brush of Colour’. More details will be available at a later date for both events.

Recently it was my pleasure to be the host to two members of the Yankalilla Area School, both with a keen interest in art. We spent an hour looking at all the work on show discussing different types of paintings etc., and Doris, who was sitting that particular day, came in for her fair share of questions from the youngsters. The girls enjoyed their visit very much.

This is the sort of activity that really puts the word ‘community’ into Community gallery and it’s a great feeling.

Yankalilla Ladies Probus Club

O

ur guest speaker at the meeting in May was Geoffrey Pennhall. Geoff started his career as a technical teacher .He then went on to lecture in Education at the University of South Australia. He is also a Fellow of the Human Resources Institute and a member of the Australian College of Education. He was appointed to lead a team in Indonesia, Asia and the Pacific for AusAid. He has lived in Indonesia for 11 years. With his background and experience he gave a very professional and informative talk on the Cultural differences between Australia and Indonesia.

Indonesia has a population of 241.9 million with a population growth rate at 1.45% pa; Australia has a population of 20.3 million with a growth rate of .87% pa. The birth rate is 20.71 /1000 and 12.26 /1000 respectively. Indonesia has had a very successful birth control program, which has been commended by the United Nations, however they started off with a large population Indonesia has a very multicultural population; much more so than Australia and has numerous religious affiliations: Muslim: 87%, Christian:

9%, Hindu: 2% and Confucian: 2%. All of these religions are tolerated; Geoff pointed out that it was much more important to have a faith, any faith than no faith at all. Society is organised on the family unit. The family is very important for the cohesion of the country. It is with the family unit that moral and ethical values are taught. It is a Matriarchal Society with the Mother of the family being the boss. Most women are the homemakers and women who go to work are often ignored in business.

Education has to be paid for and it is the consensus in the family that decides how much will be spent on each child. This means that University Education is often out of the reach of most young people. Another interesting point that came up was that the Indonesians feel very uncomfortable without people around them.

Geoff gave a good example of this. He had to take a group of students from Adelaide to Melbourne and when they were in the Coorong they would not get out of the bus, as they were afraid of the isolation. Geoff’s wife Mette, who is Indonesian came along and modelled

beautiful Batik clothing, to the envy of us all, she also showed us the clothes that she wore to prayer They also brought some wonderful artefacts.

Our members were very interested in Geoff’s talk. It was a great encouragement to visit the country.

family history of Club members who have lived in the Yankalilla area most of their lives, such as the Barton, Bennett, Clarke, Rutland and Rowley families. At the end of May, the Yankalilla Club enjoyed their Annual Inter-Club Exchange visit with the Morialta Probus Club. Travelling by Coach, members visited the Cambelltown Council Chambers where a tour of facilities and services showed how local Government in a City is large business. After lunch at the Paradise Hotel, a tour of the Hope Valley Water Filtration Plant was conducted where we were told that Adelaide has a water network of 8,500 Km of water mains, 50 pumping stations and 130 water tanks. On average half of Adelaide's water is supplied from the River Murray, but in dry years this figure can rise to around 80%. The raw water quality is poor and treatment of the water supply is needed to improve its appearance and quality.

The Hope Valley Treatment Plant was Adelaide's first water treatment plant, commissioned on 11th. Sept.

1977, and serves an area extending from North Adelaide to Wingfield. Water is supplied to the reservoir from the River Murray into the Torrens River system via the Millbrook and Kangaroo Creek

Reservoirs. The basic process entails adding alum to the water, which causes particles to clump together and fall to the bottom of the sedimentation tanks. The clearer water is then passed through filters, sterilized and fluoride added. The Myponga Water Treatment Plant was opened in Nov. 1993 and has a capacity to treat up to 100 million litres per day and serves an area from McLaren Vale to Victor Harbor. Unlike other Metropolitan reservoirs, Myponga cannot be supplemented with water from the River Murray, which results in water of a predictable quality, high in colour and organics and low in turbidity. Because of this, a different process is used. Dissolved air is pumped into the sedimentation tanks causing the particles to rise to the top to be removed. After treatment, the water is stored in two 10 million-litre tanks. Some of us can remember before the treatment plant was commissioned how a bucket of water would look like weak coffee and you could hardly see the bottom. The Yankalilla Men’s Probus Club has developed a unique membership resource. Club member Ian Uppill has used the meticulous membership records set up by Life Members John Kenyon and Peter Warman to establish a photographic member's record. He has photographs of all but three of over one hundred men who have been members since the Club was formed in June 1990. New members are presented with a photo record of Current Committee members. Ian has developed the facility to list all members alphabetically and he has developed records of all Office Bearers since the Club's formation.

V reception is not as foggy as it might seem.

Speaking from experience, we had terrible reception and called in Andrew Cole of South Coast Electrical. It was a simple connections installing error, and now we have clear TV. Now if only we could get good radio reception!

Deep Creek Water Flow

write in reference to the stagnating Lake George near Beachport. Evidently this once fresh water lake abounded with fish and bird life.

Within the past six years, as reported by ABC 'Stateline' 21/4/06, this lake has died because of loss of water intake. A spokesman from SE Natural Resources Management Board blamed dry years and mentioned plans to divert water, although curiously not to reach and replenish the troubled Lake George. Coinciding with this lake drying are large-scale Tasmanian Blue Gum plantations within the past six years, fostered by Federal Government offering tax breaks for investors. On the Fleurieu Peninsula the major water flow to the iconic once permanent Deep Creek ceased summer flow for the first time in

history, also coinciding with pine plantations in its headwaters. Without doubt, failing water flows and diminishing water tables are the result of human activity consuming water for economic gain beyond Nature's limited provision, Tasmanian Blue Gums and Government pine forestry, Pinus radiata, are the two most waterholic evergreen trees in southern Australia.

Forestry Tasmania warns of Tasmanian Blue Gum losses in districts below 1200mm (48") annual rainfall in dry seasons, which clearly indicates these trees water consumption. In all life matters when problems arise experts in specialized fields are called upon; engineers for failed constructions, mechanics for failed machinery, etc. Following this accepted method, surely when once reliable water flows cease for the first time in history, hydrologists, experts in water, must be employed by our State Government to establish why water flows are failing across southern Australia. Prior the recent State election our Premier's slogan was 'Rann gets results'. There is no better opportunity than now for our Premier to prove the sincerity of this promise.

feel compelled to reply to Mr Coulter’s letter in the June issue.

From information I have to hand this so-called illegal closure of a road has NEVER been a road and this is from a resident of over 50 years!

From the map printed in the Yankalilla News, and from observations - just how many residents would benefit from Mr Coulter’s proposal - there certainly has not been any development in the immediate area in the last 12 months so I question the statement that was made relating to the road vastly increasing!

The 1.2kms due for road upgrade of Martin Road and Aldridge Road will not only be used by the few residents in Bower Road but also by a limited number of residents in Martin Road right past Aldridge Road and to Wilson Drive. So, those residents to the east of Aldridge Road and beyond would certainly NOT use the lower portion of Bower Road but would continue to use their end of Martin Toad and into Aldridge Road.

Why would tourists be disadvantaged if this proposal does not go ahead?

When speaking to the police about the T junction, the statement was made, I am sure, was generalised and would not have been privy to the engineering, water run-off and drainage situations.

I certainly oppose any form of suburbanisation in this location - I absolutely love my environment black cockatoos flying overhead to nest in pine trees alongside Bower Road, profusion of birds nesting, visiting in the 50 year old gum tress alongside Lot 482 and also adjacent to my property and the wonderment of watching kangaroos and their joeys enjoying the seclusion and safety of this particular corner of Jervois Rd. 50 year old gum trees would have to be removed and this, along with the encumberment costs to the ratepayers for this extension is not justified.

I would also like to make one last point - it certainly is not in my interest either to have the upgrade of Martin Road and Aldridge Road but some things you have to accept and live with peaceably and enjoy what you have got not what you think you want.

e continue to have plenty of dancers despite the cold weather. It was nice to have Jim Biggs back dancing although Margaret is still not fit enough. Some Inman Valley residents came along with Jim and I hope they enjoyed the evening and that we will see

them regularly.

Unfortunately none from our class was able to go to the May Ball, better luck next year.

We meet in the A.O.G. hall on Thursday evenings at 7.30 p.m.

n June, members met at Jean Leckies home for lunch and meeting. In the afternoon planted trees on her property.

Everyone had a lovely time.

Members also went to a group fun day at Hindmarsh Valley. The theme of the day was Denmark, this year's C.W.A. country of study.

The speakers were entertaining and the displays were interesting.

Sylvia Green and Vivien Hobbs are keen miniaturist's and had a display from members of the Christies Beach Miniature Club of room

boxes depicting Hans Christian Andersons fairy tails. There was a competition by donation and it was won by "The Princess and the Pea"

by Vivien Hobbs.

July will see our A.G.M., we will have a pooled lunch and also a monthly meting. The programme for next year will be discussed.

n May 22 members and non members went on the Indian Pacific to Broken Hill. We had a really lovely time, after the first initial shock of our accommodation.

We were booked into a backpackers hostel and not a motel like we thought.

But as it happened the owners were very good to us and took us to the club in the evening. and arranged tours and took us to the train station on Sunday morning.

The beds were comfortable and everyone had a good time. We would all like do the trip again maybe for longer, there is so much to see and do there.

In June we held our A.G.M. and also our mid year dinner at

Leonard's Mill, Second Valley, we were all looking forward to that with three courses for $20.00.

On July 2nd we will be holding a Beetle Drive in the R. S. L. Hall.

ur numbers were down this month due to sickness, hospitalisation etc.

Nevertheless ten of us managed to attend the meeting on the 7th June. President Glenda Oats welcomed members especially Joyce Hall who is recovering really well after a knee replacement.

Our roll call was ‘What C.W.A. means to you’ and without doubt Friendship was one of the most important aspects in belonging to C.W.A. Our speaker was Cathy Reid who gave us a brief summary of her life till the present time followed by a depiction of New South Wales Country Woman’s Association and her membership with them. Their organisation is very similar to S.A.C.W.A. but there are some differences and it was very interesting to hear how they manage their affairs. There are 350 branches in N.S.W. Cathy belonged to Hornsby Branch which is in Northumberland Group and was a very active member of N.S.W. C.W.A. Sydney has quite a few Evening Branches which are more convenient for business women and which are sometimes run on more unconventional lines.

Much of the meeting was discussing the plans for our 70th Birthday in November.

Our Committee went through the programme that they had planned and with some suggestions from members this is now, hopefully, finalised.

We are having lunch at the Senior Citizens Roo ms, followed by entertainment from the Victor Harbor C.W.A. Choir.

ith the first round completed we wish all coaches and teams the best of luck for the run to the finals.

The coaches and girls have had the inconvenience of not being able to train on the courts due to unfortunate circumstances with the courts requiring a major upgrade after that very hot day in January. Hopefully that is all behind us now, and we can knuckle down with good training attendances and dedication.

Fiona Fulton (nee May) has volunteered to represent Yankalilla as a delegate to the Gr e at So u t her n N etb all Association. Well done Fiona, and we are sure you will be a wonderful delegate for our club.

The committee wishes to also thank and congratulate one of our junior girls, 14yr old Sarah Chapman, who coached the Under 9 girls while Carol Allen was overseas. Sarah showed great maturity and we hope other junior girls follow in her footsteps and take on small but

important rolls within the club.

ust recently, I went to one of the many information seminars different state and federal government departments run to keep people like myself up to date. This was put on by one of the Australian Government’s smallest, the ACCC. For the uninitiated, that is the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. They should not be confused with us ….. the ACC or Area Consultative Committee.

Small the ACCC may well be, but it is surprising how much involves them. Their headline grabbing role in enforcing the Trades Practices Act overshadows the mass of work they do regarding information, liaison and education in all aspects of competition and consumer law, including product safety.

There are many aspects of law which go some way to helping the little guy address the power (read money) imbalance compared to the big guy. One of great importance in the future, will be the proposed changes to allow groups of smaller traders to legally collectively bargain in buying and selling. Watch this space. When the boot is on the other foot and we as businesses need to watch our game, remember that a fair and honest business culture benefits us all. Ultimately, we are all both customers and traders. Just a short time in markets like the USA, will show you the downside of letting standards on issues like “how prices are quoted” fall.

coming season. Things like steering cables should be inspected and lubed and as a last resort replaced. You would be surprised how many boats are launched at the start of the season and when they try and leave the pontoon the steering is locked solid, I saw one chap last year trying to free up his steering with a huge hammer and boy did he make a mess. That certainly put an end to his day on the water and lightened his wallet by a quite a few dollars. Fuel filters should be replaced as they will most likely be contaminated with moisture and all sorts of things, especially diesels as there is an algae that, will build up in diesel tanks and completely block filters.

Remember filters are a bit hard to come by out on the water. Another item to check is all electrical connections and radio aerials for corrosion. A poor electrical connection can cause all sorts of problems and even motor failure.

Don't forget to check your boat and trailer lights. I will give you a tip that all trailers over 750kg must be fitted with brakes and there will be inspections made at ramps by various departments. If your trailer and boat is over 750kg you will have to have brakes fitted, so don't leave it to the last minute as there will be many boat trailers in SA which will have to be modified.

Cape Jervis. Two teenage girls set off from Wirrina after being advised not to do so in a small tinny not much bigger than a bathtub powered by an even smaller motor. There was a strong wind warning in place at the time and when they ventured out side the marina the wind blew them out to sea with the motor making no headway against it. As they had very little in the way of safety equipment, let alone an anchor, they were in a fair bit of trouble and in no time at all were some 3 to 4kms out to sea all on their own.

If it were not for the chaps from the Cape there could well have been a tragedy. Full marks once again to the Cape boys, a job well done. The second incident was a chap that we had towed in on two previous occasions; one of those was when he had his craft high and dry on the rocks at Rapid Bay. He didn't make himself too popular when he made a joke out of this third incident. You could imagine what was said after his comment. It was dark, freezing cold and we had not had our tea, and I suppose a bit tired and cranky at the same time. I think he got the message that we were not impressed by his attitude.

uccess in dredging the Murray Mouth, means the project will be scaled back. Minister for the River Murray Karlene Maywald says. "The project has reached a. major milestone m that for the first time since dredging began, we have achieved two channels into the Coorong and Goolwa Channels to allow water to flow between the sea and the Coorong," Minister Maywald said. Now we can reduce the amount of dredging to maintain these channels rather than the previous resources required to construct them." Minister Maywald says the success of the project is a combination of dredging and extra flows of water along the river. "The move to scale back dredging comes as Lake Alexandrina reaches high water levels for this time of year," she said. "It is very likely that there will be sustained releases through the barrages over the next few months which will help to reduce the amount of sand entering the Mouth. "South Australia will receive 2220 gigalitres of water in the 12

months to June 30 this year. While this is well below the long-term average annual flow of 4800GL, it is well above the 1870GL of flows received last financial year." The dredging project began in early October 2002 and has continued nearly non-stop with two dredges working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This intensive schedule was reduced by 30 per cent in late March as the latest satellite images and bathymetry showed signs of improvement in the channel dimensions and stability. As the favourable outlook continues, only one dredge will be in operation, which means a 50pc reduction in dredging effort. "The dredge will be de-commissioned for the next three months and channels and tidal ratios will be monitored weekly for any changes," Minister Maywald said.

"However, the dredge will stay on site during this period so it can be recommissioned at short notice if needed."

ello readers. Well as you can see from the figures above, it has been somewhat quiet for us over the past month. Which is, of course, a good thing. I would like at this point to dispel the rumour that while I was away on holidays I won the lottery. This is one rumour that I wish were true, but unfortunately it is not.

PARTIES e like to leave parties to their own devices as much as is

possible, other than when we receive complaints about them. We try to do this because we believe that people have the right to have a good time without having the police breathing down their necks all the time. The problem with us trying to do the right thing for people in this regard is that it sometimes has the opposite effect. A clear example of this being the unprovoked damaged to a local lad’s car recently and of people’s property being interfered with and damaged.

What this tells us is that these people obviously want the police to pay particular and regular attention to these parties and to make sure we are around more often when they are likely to be driving or walking home. They obviously want us to attend more regularly and have loud music turned off earlier, perhaps to deal with intoxicated people on the streets more in line with how police do in the metropolitan areas than in the country. Is this what they are asking us to do? Come on guys.

Have some respect for other people’s property and their right to peace and quiet. You have the right to party and you even have the right to make some noise, but other people’s right to peace and quiet with the safety of their property supersedes your right to party and cause damage or a disturbance.

There is a middle ground of course, and that is where we like to be. We will support your right to party and make some noise as long as you are giving in return and being reasonable by leaving other

people’s property and peace alone.

burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a CD player to place in his sack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, Jesus is watching you."

He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, promised himself a vacation after the next big score, then clicked the light on and began searching for more valuables.

H

ow would you like to live without pain?

I read recently of a young boy – one in a billion who has a rare genetic disorder that has left him totally immune to pain. He pulled a tooth out and thought nothing of it.

‘Lucky for him,’ I thought, as I read the opening print. But, then it said how he felt

nothing when he blistered his fingers on a hot stove and kept running on a broken ankle.

His mother said, ‘At first we just thought that we had a tough little cookie, but gradually we began to realise he was just too tough. It might sound appealing having no sense of pain, but the condition means we have to be on our guard every minute.’

Our sensitive nervous system conveys high levels of pain. I’ve had severe sciatica. Let me tell you, that when the sciatic nerve is aggravated you’re in for a rough time.

Some, however, suffer extremes of pain that leaves them pleading for death.

There’s something unfair about pain. Why do some suffer more than others -especially little kids or those old and frail?

Pain is not always physical. Grief, guilt and regret can be very hurtful. How do you live with the thought of being responsible for another’s death – or making a decision that left someone brain damaged? How do we cope with tragedy or the suicide of a family member? Emotions are not easily tranquillised and their injury can be much harder and persistent than physical hurt.

Purpose in pain.

Is there a reason for pain? Are there concealed benefits that we tend to overlook?

We’ve already seen how serious it is to feel nothing when an ankle breaks. Physical pain, in many respects, is our friend.

Emotional pain is sometimes our fault.

When a drunken driver kills another he has himself to blame. However, there are times of grief that are beyond our control. Those who stand by their loved ones in suffering may feel their pain as well.

There’s no adequate answer to suffering.

What kind of people would we be if we never experienced pain? Would we be as caring, sympathetic and appreciative?

Suffering is a teacher and a builder of character.

There are depths of understanding and sympathy for others that are only known through pain.

Very important is our response - for pain can make us beautiful or bitter. We often don’t really know people until they’ve suffered.

Adelaide Proctor wrote, ‘I thank thee too that all our joy is touched with pain; that shadows fall on brightest hours, that thorns remain: So that earth’s bliss may be our guide and not our chain.’

God hurt!

Does God understand pain? Does he know how we feel? The answer may shock us: God has been hurt - we’ve actually hurt him.

Jesus Christ was hurt more than any of us, and deserved it less than anyone. Others inflicted upon him one of the most terrible tortures ever devised –– crucifixion!

The details of crucifixion are too horrible to think about. More horrid still is the thought that we drove nails into the hands and feet of the Son of God and crucified him between thieves – making a criminal out of an innocent man.

In the darkness a loud cry came from the lips of Jesus as he hung on the cross, ‘My God, My God! Why have you forsaken me?’ The pain for Jesus was much deeper than physical hurt. He suffered for us – to take away our sin. How truly did the hymn writer, Philip Bliss put it: ‘We may not know, we cannot tell, what pains he had to bear, But we believe it was for us he hung and suffered there.’

Jesus refused sedation. He was committed to the pain he had to bear.

‘No more pain’ There’s an amazing verse in the Bible which says, ‘And there shall be no more pain.’ (Rev 22:4) Isn’t that what we crave -a pain free state where we can live without hurt and without danger? There will be no more sorrow and no more death – a pain free eternity!

Jesus suffered to liberate us from pain. His agony on the cross was to release us from sin and death that we might enjoy the fellowship of God for eternity.

While you live, expect pain. Better things, however, are ahead. Believers in Jesus Christ, who suffered for us and rose from death, will be released from pain forever, in the glory of heaven.

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

“

They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 Handel’s Oratorio – “THE Messiah” In the current series of articles we are examining the Bible texts that George Frederick Handel selected to put to music.

We are looking at the wonderful truths expressed in the selection of scriptures Handel made and as we stated many of them are in themselves challenges to much of Christian teaching today.

Hallelujah Chorus (continued) A significant feature of the Hallelujah Chorus is that it has never yet been sung by those for whom it was originally designed.

For though Handel’s music may be inspiring, it is but the work of fallible man, whereas the words used are the words of Inspiration recorded in the Bible, and yet to be sung, to the praise and honour of the Messiah. The word “Hallelujah” is compounded of two words, signifying “praise”, and “Yah” – a contraction of the Hebrew name of God. Hallelujah means “Praise ye Yahweh”. The word occurs in Revelation 19:1-6 where it is shown that this anthem of praise is yet to ascend from the hearts and lips of innumerable immortal men and women, individuals who have allied themselves to Christ by submitting to the Divine requirements during the centuries of mans rule. At the appearing of the Lord Jesus, they will be raised from the dead (John 5:28-29), caused to pass before the Judgement Seat of Christ (2 Cor 5:10) and if found acceptable will receive immortality of nature. (Matthew 19:29).

In company with these immortal friends, Christ will bring all nations into subjection to the Law from heaven (Revelation 2:26).

Messiah’s reign will extend to all parts of the earth. The lowly Nazarene, born to be King, who walked the dusty roads of Palestine, scorned and mocked because he revealed the evils of men’s ways, will return to earth, as universal monarch, with supreme power, to enforce his righteous rule (Psalm 72). Then will the words of the Lord’s Prayer find fulfilment: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.” It will be the triumph of Righteousness over evil; of God’s ways over the ways of flesh. Christ will ultimately eliminate war, crush every evil traffic or degrading vice and educate mankind in the fear and admonition of God his Father. (Isaiah 2:2-4; Isaiah 11) This is the picture behind the Hallelujah Chorus, causing us indeed to thrill to the significance of it all and from our hearts “Praise Yahweh” for His Goodness toward the sons of men.

With resistless authority Christ will compel all nations to ultimately submit to his rule.

From Jerusalem (Jeremiah 3:17; Isaiah 2:2) his law will go forth to all the world, causing widespread moral, industrial and religious changes throughout the earth. No longer will ugly slums disgrace the cities, no longer will poverty and plenty exist side by side, no longer will fear and hatred and the threat of war divide humanity. Trade and commerce will be founded on Divine principles, dedicated to the benefit of mankind (Isaiah 23:18). Universal peace, equality and goodwill will characterise Christ’s reign on earth. The golden rule of love will be every where acknowledged: “Do unto others as you would they do unto you.” (Luke 6:31) Next month we will complete our examination of George Frederick Handel’s

eefing up Education to Milk out a Career Rumination Notes Recently we have seen the start of a free course (funded through Fleurieu Regional Development Board and TAFE) for people interested in agriculture specifically Dairy Farming. Mt Compass Area School has formed the majority of this group who are utilising the resources and facilities at the school. It is great that the community is willing to participate and show an interest.

The focus farm has been very busy with this group as well as hosting the Fleurieu Beef Group and the Mt Torrens Dairy discussion Group. All groups have been impressed by the presentation of the trial results (thanks to Greg Mitchell, Neil Heath and the students) and the value placed on this facility by the school c o m mu n i t y, l oc a l f a r m i n g industries and the local community in general.

Mt Torrens group took on the “Adventure in Agriculture “ and they found it informative, entertaining and most importantly challenged them to look beyond there own gateways to improve their personal situations, (Thanks to Alexandrina Cheese and Cleland's Dairy).

Some comments from these dairy farmers were: “Innovation is just getting the problem solved” Craig Zilm on the Jacobs and McKenzie dairy sharing arrangement.

“ I might have to look at my stocking rate” Gary Paine on the Focus Farm.

Good relationships with the Local Community Partnerships (Liz Browne) program have been formed through attending and presenting at the cluster meeting at Noarlunga House that involved all the regions high schools.

I had the pleasure recently of being involved in the Murraylands Careers Expo at the Murray Bridge TAFE for the dairy industry. This day involved approximately 1200 year 10 and 11 students from 9 schools looking at the various career pathways available from Bakery to Butchery to Personal Trainers to Horse Trainers.

The students were often unaware of the huge variety and diversity in the dairy world and many were keen to follow up after they got a free milk (Thanks to “Dairy Farmers” and “National Foods) about how they could start a path towards the dairy industry. Most students came from the surrounding area and were aware of the decline in dairy within that region but they were also most unaware of the level of technology that a modern dairy farmer utilises every day and the wide range of careers relating directly to the dairy industry. (Thanks to those involved).

ANIMAL MATTERS COLLAPSED TRACHEA

T

he trachea (windpipe) is an important structure, which connects the throat to the lungs. It serves the purpose of directing air into the respiratory tract. The normal trachea is tubular. It maintains its shape because of a series of rings made of cartilage.

These rings do not completely encircle the trachea. They are 'C' shaped and run from 2 o'clock to 10 o'clock. The remainder of the trachea is composed of a flexible membrane that joins the ends of the cartilage rings. When the cartilage rings are flattened from the top to the bottom, the trachea is said to be collapsed. Rapid inhalation of air can cause the trachea to flatten and make it difficult for air to enter the lungs. Affected dogs have an abnormality in the chemical makeup of their tracheal rings. The rings lose their stiffness so they are not able to retain their circular shape. The condition occurs in certain breeds of dogs, notably Chihuahuas. Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Toy Poodles, and Yorkshire Terriers. Genetic and nutritional factors may be involved.

The most common clinical sign is a chronic cough. It is often described as dry and harsh and can become quite pronounced, like a "goose honk". Coughing is often worse in the daytime and much less at night.

The cough may also begin due to excitement, pressure on the trachea (from pulling on the lead when out for a walk), or from drinking water

or eating. A dog of the breeds listed above with a chronic cough, especially a "goose honk" should be suspected as having collapsed trachea. Often very light pressure over the trachea during the physical examination can raise a suspicion of collapsed trachea in a small dog with a persistent dry cough. While the information gained from the physical examination is helpful other tests are needed to confirm this condition. X-rays of the chest and neck can identify the trachea and its shape. However, a collapsed trachea changes its diameter during the respiratory cycle. It is usually collapsed during inhalation and normal during exhalation. The ideal and most diagnostic examination would be to visualise the trachea during both phases of respiration.

This is best achieved with fluoroscopy - a machine that makes a 'radiographic video' and allows the trachea to be viewed throughout in spi r ation and e xp i r atio n .

Endoscopy is another way to examine the trachea. An endoscope is a tube that is small enough to insert into the trachea; it has a camera on the end and the operator can look at the inside of the trachea.

By watching the trachea during in spi r ation and e xp i r atio n , abnormal collapsing can be seen.

Unfortunately, tracheal endoscopes and fluoroscopes are specialist equipment. Chronic coughing can also be a sign of heart failure. Many dogs with collapsed trachea also have heart disease, and so the heart is usually evaluated when carrying out the tests to diagnose a collapsed trachea. A collapsed trachea is

If obesity is present, weight loss is often beneficial.

Excitement and vigorous exercise are likely to cause a relapse, so they should be avoided as much as possible. Medical therapy only treats the symptoms and does not correct the original problem, so these dogs are always subject to recurrences of coughing and breathing difficulty and generally have to be managed for life.

FIGURES INDICATE BRIGHT FUTURE FOR SA DAIRY INDUSTRY

outh Australia's dairy industry has a bright future with a forecast return to solid growth according to a new national survey. The results of the national Dairy Situation and Outlook survey indicating the current state and future outlook for the dairy sector were released today at the 2006 South Australian Dairy Outlook Forum in Adelaide. Speaking at the forum, Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Minister, Rory McEwen said the survey would provide the SA dairy industry with vital information to look to the future growth and build on recent successes. "The results indicate that 52 per cent of SA dairy farmers are positive about the industry's future in 2006, up from 39 per cent in 2005 and that almost half of SA dairy farmers plan to increase production in three years time. These are extremely pleasing figures,"

he said. "Total milk production in SA in 2004-05 was about 680 million litres about 7 per cent of national milk production - and the estimated value of farm milk production from the region was $214 million. "It’s vital for the industry to examine its future through these forums which provide a good insight into how dairy farmers are managing and what are their short and medium term intentions," Mr McEwen said. "World demand for dairy products continues to grow steadily, and market conditions are expected to remain stable. "This is good news for the industry, particularly with the state's dairy sector at a critical stage of development and working to achieve some very challenging targets up to 2013 to line up with the State Export Plan. These targets include increasing milk production to 1.2 billion litres, or 10 per

cent of national production, and achieving a much higher added value per litre in the context of the Australasian dairy region," Mr McEwen said. "The Dairy Industry Development Board is also working with the industry to continually review the State Dairy Plan and its targets to reflect the changing industry environment, and ensure dairy farmers are in the best position they can be for future growth and prosperity.

"We know its been a tough period for our dairy farmers, but for many, the outlook is much more encouraging," Mr McEwen said.

Fleurieu Horse & Pony Club

W

e actually had Sunshine for the morning of our June Rally. There was a very impressive attendance with two new members.

Welcome Joylene and Catherine.

The grounds looked great with four groups going at once. Congratulations to Jen Kay, Sally George and Yvonne Gallagher for successfully completing Instructor Training.

Groups were able to move around the grounds with their instructors to flat work; dressage practice; and jumping.

Lunch by Kath and Jill was BBQ with warming veggies and apple crumble with ice cream.

The afternoon caught everyone up with their D and D* theory. Those who hadn't jumped in the morning did so in the afternoon.

All great practice for the Combined Competition we will have had on the 18th of June. We have 82 entries so will be a very exciting day. The following weekend is the Southern Zone ODE at Monarto and many of our members will be travelling to compete there as well. Watch this space for some results next month.

SEALINK HOSTS AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA AT CAPE JERVIS TERMINAL

O

n Thursday 25th May, a morning tea was held at the Cape Jervis Sealink Ferry Passenger Terminal to raise funds for The Cancer Council of Australia.

The event was initiated by Sealink staff and the local Cape Jervis Community and raised a whopping $1761.00 throughout the day.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this worthwhile cause, especially the Sealink staff who baked cakes and cookies. A special thank you also goes to Angelo and Joan Russo and the Cape Jervis Community Club”, said Georgie Crawford, Sealink’s Terminal Liaison Coordinator.

Sealink also contributed the entire proceeds of hot drink sales for the day from both the Sealion 2000 & Spirit of Kangaroo Island ferries along with a generous $500 donation.

This was a tremendous effort for a small community and all are to be congratulated.

Clarice Wheaton heads to China

C

urrumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (QLD) has chosen Clarice Wheaton, aged 10, as the National Winner in a promotion to choose a young wildlife ambassador to travel to China with the official Australian delegation to open China’s first koala exhibit.

Clarice and her classmates entered the competition with the support of their teacher Mrs Briars and student teacher Mr Schlein at the Yankalilla Area School. Clarice chose the name ‘Cobber’ because it shows a friendship between Australia and China and this proved to be Clarice Wheaton with Cobber a winner.

Yankalilla Council Budget

T

he budget was adopted at the meeting held on 23rd June with minor amendments.

There was no change to the council rates unless you have had a property value increase or decrease.

Approval for the purchase of GPS equipment for the works department which will assist with various jobs that require locating objects such as pipes and other uses.

There is also allowances for work to be done on some footpaths and roads at Carrickalinga.

The budget also includes allocations to the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival and Normanville New Years Eve Pageant.

“This is a broad ranging budget that I believe is the best I have worked on yet” said one councillor unofficially after the meeting.

There is no decision as yet on the proposed upgrade of council chambers as it is still under public consultation. If you have a strong opinion on this matter then you need to lobby your local councillor (assuming they share your opinion), or write, email, ring or start a petition. Just let the council know what it is we the community feel is a reasonable course of action. This is a major community project which will have an impact for years to come, one way or another. If you are supportive of the proposed changes let council know this as well. All feedback can only be of assistance when it comes time to make the decisions. One would hope that the decision would be based on what is best for the community as a whole. That would be the democratic path to take.

n the 9th June Neil Wilkinson was at Jelfs Stores Normanville with the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Groups information caravan. The stop over at Normanville was part of an information tour covering the Southern Fleurieu

Peninsula. This was made possible thanks to Honda Australia with the generous donation of the Honda motor car. Neil wished to express thanks to Jelfs Group for allowing the use of the space.

icki Rogers held her 6 “Worlds Biggest Morning Tea” at Myponga on Thursday 25th May. This year Vicki hosted the event with the help once again from the Myponga CWA. A very successful morning was had, with 92 people in attendance. Everyone enjoyed a cuppa with some delectable goodies to eat. They were also entertained by the lovely singing of Margaret Waite and John. A Mystery Box Auction was held with goods donated by local and surrounding Fleurieu businesses. Auctioneered by Glen Rowlands of Rosetta Rural Agencies. Vicki wishes to thank them and everyone involved in helping make the morning such a success.

MORNING TEA FOR CANCER RESEARCH

n Friday the 26th of May a morning tea was held in Sanders Hall Yankalilla in aid of Cancer Research.

Attendance was not quite as many as last year but with generous donations from those who came and quite a few who could not come contributed as well, so we were able to raise $330.00 a little more than other years. We thank you all very much. We were entertained by amusing poems from Joyce Blesing and Coralie Law, Coralie had written one of the poems she recited as

well. Thank you ladies, it was greatly appreciated. We also sincerely thank many of our friends for bringing morning tea and helping with the cleaning up afterwards. We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves, it sounded as if they did and it was nice for us to catch up with friends as well. We would also like to thank the Uniting Church Committee for letting us have the use of their facilities free of charge.

ACH Yankalilla Centre Update

A

CH Yankalilla Centre has recently taken part in the nation wide fundraiser – “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea”. Being the innovative site that we are, Yankalilla decided to go with an unconventional afternoon tea instead. The idea was still the same – enjoy lots of delicious fare and interesting company, all in the name of Cancer fundraising.

This event took place in the Activity room of ACH Yankalilla Centre on Friday 9th June at 2pm. Earlier that day, many of the residents, lifestyle staff and volunteers cooked some enticing food to be offered during the afternoons festivities.

Posters had previously been plastered around to invite residents and friends and staff to attend the worthwhile event.

Many people attended and indulged in some great food and

great company. A gold coin was collected from those who walked through the doors and as a result a total of $165 was recorded by the end of the day.

This money will be sent to the Cancer Council of Australia to go towards cancer research.

Thankyou to those who attended and to those who donated items, time and money towards the event. Thankyou to the residents who were involved in cooking food in the morning and to the staff and volunteers who offered support. A special mention to Chris Hales-Petersen and Jeanette Barrett who both baked at home and on site and then worked tirelessly on the day to ensure everyone had a good time.

This was truly a successful afternoon that will benefit many.

Yankalilla Centre would like to

take this opportunity to send a belated thankyou to all who supported our Easter Raffle that was drawn on Wednesday 12th April 2006. Many staff and volunteers donated to the huge Easter Basket that was offered as 1st Prize. This was won by Graham Spry.

Our second prize was a selection of DVD’s. This was won by D Seagren.

Our third prize was a beautifully presented lolly basket donated

by Ruth’s Lolly shop in Normanville – This was won by Lauren Bugg.

All together our raffle raised $383. This money will go towards lifestyle resources and entertainment that will directly affect the residents at Yankalilla Centre.

Thanks also go to the wonderfully generous organisations who have donated

some DVDs and books for our developing library. We have been steadily building on our residents library over the last few months and have been overwhelmed by the kindness of many of the organisations that we have approached.

Prevention, early detection and treatment of hypertension, diabetes and obesity are extremely important as these conditions are becoming more common in Australia.
