NORMANVILLE NEW YEARS EVE PAGEANT

D

espite the weather conditions the 10th annual Normanville New Years Eve Pageant was a huge success.

Around 40 floats sang, danced and performed their way to the beach front cheered on by a huge crowd of approximately 5,000 people. A big thank you to the crowd for respecting our request regarding water restrictions and usage. The decorated floats were fantastic, what a great effort, congratulations to all those who entered and did so much work to make their floats so impressive in extremely hot conditions. Thank you to all our major sponsors this year including the Yankalilla Council & Yankalilla Foodland.

Thank you to all who have supported our fundraising efforts this year and Lions Club for their ongoing commitment to road closures, Barry Oates’s challenging job of keeping the

beach car park clear in readiness for the parade, Yankalilla Regional News for their continued support and the residents of Katherine Drive for putting up with total chaos for the night. We would also like to thank the Victor Harbor Times for their coverage and support.

Thank you to our judges, a difficult job which was extremely well done. The crowd at the foreshore were fed by our local service groups, entertained by local musicians and band Never Say Never and of course the grand finale of the night was a spectacular fireworks display after dark, supplied by Howard & Sons.

Editor’s Comments i everyone!

We would like to pass on big congratulations to the New Years Eve Pageant Committee. Celebrating its 10th year in such fantastic style is a credit to the organisers. Comments from some of the tourists was that the fireworks rivalled anything that was put on in the city. Thank you to the spectators for respecting the request for no water pistols etc., it was greatly appreciated. There is an article in this edition listing the winning floats. As you can see by the front cover there was a great turn out and the fireworks and atmosphere were just magic.

The official opening of the Links Lady Bay also features on the front cover. This was a great night of celebrations, article is on the facing page.

Our district has been the focus of a couple of national television shows aimed at both children and adults. How wonderful to have the Fleurieu showcased in such a way.

The Normanville Natural Resource Centre has asked that we dogs owners and beach goers in general be very aware of the nesting Hooded Plovers. There are some roped off nesting areas at Haycock Point which they ask that they please be left alone. These birds are a threatened species and we need to protect them, thank you. There is an article on page 30 with more details.

The St Johns Yankalilla Auxiliary have put out a call for people to donate flowers and there arranging skills for the upcoming Mothers Day fundraiser amongst other areas of assistance, can you help?

The next issue is the March 2008 edition and the annual price adjustment kicks in as from that issue. Only a small increase due to the low CPI rate at the moment. Easter is in March this year to Easter advertising will need to be in the next issue if you would like some.

New Links Lady Bay Resort Launched

O

n Friday the 30th November the new Links Lady Bay Resort was officially launched. The evening was hosted by cricketing legend Wayne Phillips in front of approximately 200 guests.

Mike Hill, the Managing Director of the Links Lady Bay resort was extremely proud and keen to show off the new resort to his guests.

“We’ve spent the last eighteen months developing a breathtaking world class resort, complimented by a superb golf course that has been a popular destination for golfers since 2000 and is now a unique world class getaway experience in South Australia’, he said. “This launch is the culmination of the creative talents of a fantastic team and this event was hard to beat in terms of the setting, as well as the food, the wine and the fun”.

wines and tasty delicacies whilst enjoying a live art display by local Artist Jeff Prior who completed a wood carving during the festivities. This piece of art will now adorn The Dunes restaurant at The Links. In the guests rooms are beautiful pieces of artwork produced by Andrew Munn of “Seagull Droppings”, which continues the theme of art and the coastal setting.

Amongst the guests were Alexander and Nikki Downer, Tennis Australia Chairman John Fitzgerald and the man behind the original concept for The Links Lady Bay, Jack Newton.

The new resort features a Pro Shop, conference and function centre, the Dune Restaurant, a sports Bar and quality accommodation.

The Links Lady Bay is located on St Andrews Boulevard which is just approximately 1km south of Normanville.

Tour Down Under 2008

T

his year the Fleurieu Peninsula will be hosting 2 stages of the Tour Down Under.

Stage 3 -Thursday 24th January, Unley Victor Harbor This stage begins in the Adelaide suburb of Unley before travelling past the long sandy beaches of Goolwa, Middleton and Port Elliott, through to Encounter Bay and finishing on the Esplanade at South Australia’s favourite seaside town, Victor Harbor.

Stage 4 - Friday 25th January - Willunga to Willunga The popular Willunga Circuit is often the

race decider, again featuring stunning Fleurieu Peninsula scenery and great views: white sandy beaches; clear blue ocean; flourishing vineyards and rolling hillsides.

This route travels through Willunga, Aldinga, Aldinga Beach, Port Willunga and the famous wine region of McLaren Vale.

There should be many wonderful vantage points for the enthusiasts over the two days.

With many challenging stretches of road in the beautiful district it should provide a great spectacle. After the days racing stay around and enjoy the various street parties and festivals being put on, bringing a carnivale feel to the event.

YANKALILLA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

n recent weeks we have begun researching the backgrounds of past and present identities who are represented on the plaques that have been placed throughout the district. Not least among them are the Kaurna people. These original caretakers of our district have left us a legacy of musical place names - such as Yankalilla and Carrickalinga - to name only two.

They have also left us their Dreamtime stories, the Tjilbruke legend one of them.

Tjilbruke, so the legend goes, rose from the ground near Mt.Hayfield at Parawa where two prominent hills represent the two men who shared his camp. On hearing that his nephew Kulultuwi had been slain for killing an emu against tribal law Tjilbruke hurried to the Sturt river at Marion. From a spring on the beach near Brighton Tjilbruke carried Kulultuwi's body (which had been smoked) along the coast to Cape Jervis, and wherever he rested fresh water springs were created. The springs can still be found near Hallett Cove, at Port Noarlunga, and

near Red Ochre Cove. While resting at Port Willunga Tjilbruke wept onto the damp sand where, to this day, fresh water can be found by digging in that spot. Further springs from Tjilbruke's tears may be found on the beach near Sellick's Hill, and just south of Carrickalinga Head, with another near a small creek at Second Valley. Travelling on to Cape Jervis Tjilbruke placed Kulultuwi's body on a platform of sticks and displayed it to the spirits of the dead on Kargaroo Island. Finally, Tjilbruke lodged the body in a cave near Rapid Bay then continued on into the hill. Guided by the light shining from a high crevice he climbed up and, emerging near a swampy lagoon, he was turned into an ibis. This Creation story is a reminder of the respect the Kaurna people have for this land, and in particular, the beautiful district in which we live.

How easy it is to allow our busy lives to distract us from the mystique and the wonder of it.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB

ecember has had its usual quota of windy days which led to cancellation of sailing on 2 days. Just for a change, on the last sailing day in December we had the opposite, and with too little wind most boats were unable to complete the second race. It’s no fun being on a sailing boat with no wind, as there is no control over the boat and it just drifts aimlessly about. Thank goodness for the incoming tide, which helped a few stragglers to get back to the shore without the assistance of the Club boat and the embarrassment of a tow!

Membership of the Club remains at a high level, with 24 sailing members, and we expect it will exceed last year’s numbers. This means that on most Sundays we can expect to see over 12 boats on the water – always a magnificent sight for the observer on the shore. We welcome David Morcroft from Port Elliot in his Paper Tiger as a new member, and wish him many successful sailing days.

The Club has scored a major coup by being nominated to host the state titles for Arrows on 3rd February,

Arafura Cadets on the 10th and Yvonne Catamarans on 17th. Club Treasurer and leading light Steve Rogers has done some smooth talking to the right people. We could expect to see another 25 to 30 boats participating in these competitions and it shows the popularity of this area, which is well known for its unspoilt local beaches and natural beauty. Make sure you get down to the beach on at least one of these days to see the sight of all these boats on the water.

At the time of writing this, Terry Quilliam in his Arrow, and Paquita Quilliams in her Arafura Cadet are representing the Club in the National Titles in Yepoon, Queensland, while Peter Nicholson in his Mosquito is participating in the National Titles in Warrnambool. Well-done folks, and we wish you well in your endeavors!

Weather permitting; we will continue sailing every Sunday until late April. New members are always welcome, so if you are at all interested in sailing, you would be most welcome to join us for a trial

spin, even if you have little or no experience. There are still many sailing days left this season so now is the time to get involved. The Club has a spare sailing dinghy and we can arrange to take you for a trial sail and let you have a go for yourself if you want, under the watchful eye of the Club boat. It’s a great opportunity, so why not get

involved? It’s a healthy sport and ideal for our part of the world, and Club members are very safety conscious. Ring either Steve Rogers on 8598 5244 or Stuart Gibbs on 8558 3399 and arrange to join us.

Alternatively, wander down to the beach any Sunday after 1pm and have a chat as we rig our boats.

n Sunday 16th December the club held a very successful junior carnival.

The weekend began with a busy Friday night followed by a full Saturday which consisted of junior training on the beach, an early evening barbeque and live entertainment on Saturday night. The club had some fabulous feedback about our entertainers Kyle Rokkas and Margie Russell; they had the club rocking and

singing along, fantastic! The music went on well into the night and a great time was had by all. Saturday night of course was followed by the carnival on Sunday.

What a spectacular sight!!

Thanks to everybody who came along, your support is very much appreciated and we hope you had a great time.

Normanville Surf Club should be justifiably proud of its efforts in staging such a successful junior carnival last Sunday.

Thanks to Bob Menhennett for his untiring efforts and thanks to all who slaved away in the weeks beforehand and on the weekend of the carnival through late nights and very early mornings and performed, in many cases, very menial and tiring tasks to make sure that things were just right.

Thanks also to OUR MIGHTY JUNIORS who competed so well and had so much fun. They were all little champions.

Feedback that I received and overheard confirmed that our visitors enjoyed themselves and appreciated our hospitality and friendliness.

Alternative Energy Resources Dear Mr Sweetman, I am writing to express concern over the lack of the use of alternative energy resources both by the DCY, residents and businesses within the DCY area.

Yesterday, when I drove up to Adelaide, I saw only one example within the DCY of the use of photovoltaic panels installed on a property. That example is on the Links Hotel’s recently constructed accommodation section. Apart from our rural property and one other local rural property and the Links, I do not know of any other properties (although they probably exist) in the DCY

While in Adelaide (in the Keswick and Richmond areas) I noticed two small factories where multiple small wind turbines are installed on their roofs. One also had photovoltaic panels installed.

What is the DCY doing about encouraging local businesses and ratepayers to install photovoltaic panels (excellent govt. rebates are available), solar hot water panels, (excellent govt. rebates are available), small wind turbines (excellent govt. rebates are available), the use of LED (light emitting diode) lighting for street lighting on its own buildings, the local residents’ buildings and community buildings? Have ANY of these things been incorporated into the upgrade of the DCY council chambers or the Youth Community Centre ? The St Kilda council in Melbourne has used LED street lighting for years. Getting businesses and houses gridconnected to feed energy back into the grid is easy, very profitable and responsible.

Within the DCY area there are many highenergy-user businesses (eg. fish and abalone processors, hotels and restaurants, supermarkets, stores, butcher shops, the abattoir, community clubs, especially those businesses using large refrigerators and freezers and the Council. There is no outward evidence that ANY these organisations are doing anything to lessen their load on the electrical supply system.

The DCY is in a good position to set a positive example for the community to follow. Lead from the front.

n the 1st November the Victor Times reported that Ms Thelma Anderson addressed the Yankalilla Council meeting on behalf of the Walking Federation of South Australia.

The paper reported on page 8 under the title “Win for walkers” stating that Yankalilla Council voted to keep the said road open to the public. This editorial went on to state that the road runs through RP and PM Lander’s property at Inman Valley”. The Lander’s had requested the road closed to the public and sold to them for $12,430, this request was denied.

In the November 22nd Victor Times it was reported that Yankalilla Council had changed their minds, and was now going to sell the road to the Landers. “The motion to close the

road was carried, and the council will transfer it to the Landers” end of quote.

I wish to bring this situation to your notice.

As you are aware, no Council has the authority to close any public road, or to sell said land to adjoining property owners, without the consent of the Surveyor General.

Of course they may however close a dangerous road temporarily, under the Traffic Act or Local Government Act. Permanent closure and sale of any state road can only be carried out by the Surveyor General. If there are residents or ratepayers who are in a similar situation, please send your complaint to the Surveyor General, the Local Government Minister, and your Local Council.

Also send a copy to your local council.

Williams in the December issue of the Yankalilla News.

The letter from Mrs Williams contained a number of serious allegations against Mr Jelfs. Her quite libellous charges were entirely unsupported by any evidence. While the tone of her letter was extremely malicious, it did raise several interesting points which my curiosity would like answers to. Firstly, where Mrs Williams has been getting medication and pharmacy items from in the months since she “gave up” on Jelfs and, secondly, where she has been getting prescribed medication at half John Jelfs prices and what medication(s), specifically, she is referring to? I’m sure I’m not her only reader who would like to know.

I visit Victor Harbor almost every fortnight and have had plenty of opportunities to compare prices there with John Jelfs and they are certainly not cheaper. While I do not have the resources to travel further a field (seemingly Mrs Williams does) for medication and/or pharmaceutical items, and wouldn’t waste my time or money if I did, I would still like to know the identity of her heavily discounted supplier(s).

I think it would be beneficial for Mrs Williams to have her GP carefully, and very simply, explain to her about ‘generic brands’, referred to in her letter as ‘home brands’, and the financial advantages of purchasing these which are equivalent in every respect, except price, to the original manufacturer’s brands.

Also I should point out that the cost of both are fixed under the Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Scheme!

Mrs Williams expresses an interest in others providing balanced views, just a trifle hypocritical considering the totally unbalanced nature of her own epistle!

While I don’t live in Myponga, I nevertheless, whole-heartedly endorse the opinions of Carole Johnson. Over my years Viva John Jelfs in Normanville, I have found Mr Jelfs to be hat a remarkable contrast was unfailingly helpful and courteous. The provided by the letters, re John Jelfs, ‘worst’ remark I have ever heard him address from Carole Johnson and Mrs Tracy to his staff have been ‘shop’, a polite owners who seem to think it is okay to let their dogs defecate wherever they want and not pick up after their dog. Who do they think picks it up- “Poo-Fairies”?

Dog excrement does not disappear overnight and for you irresponsible dog owners, your actions or should I say “lack of action” is making it difficult for the rest of us who are responsible dog owners. Thanks to you we may lose the facilities we have and may not be able to exercise our dogs in certain areas.

If I see anyone not picking up after their dog I give them a bag to dispose of their dogs waste. The Yankalilla Sports Oval is one area that will soon be lost as a good safe place to exercise our dogs. This is because of the people who use this facility and do not pick up after their pets and leave dog faeces all over the oval. This has caused so much anger with the people who play cricket and football on OUR oval that the committee of the sports ground are considering banning all dogs from being exercised on the area. This is the sole responsibility of YOU, the people who do not pick up after your dogs.

PLEASE, all you dog owners, be considerate. It is not difficult to pick up after your dog and after all, you own a dog, you have to be responsible for it and not leave it up to others to pick up after it. Lets keep OUR oval clean and take into consideration all of the people who use it.

In today’s society, due to lack of space, areas for dos to be exercised off lead are becoming less available. We cannot afford to lose something as good the oval and the areas around it. If you do not want to pick up after your dog – keep it off the oval and leave it in its back yard.

reminder that service to customers is their primary responsibility. Mrs Williams must be a lady of extreme sensibilities (shades of Janes Austin) if this makes her uncomfortable!

On a least four occasions, when I have had a sudden onset of my respiratory problems and have been fitted in to see a doctor at the end of normal surgery hours, Mr Jelfs has waited behind, or on one occasion returned from his home in Yankalilla to fill my prescription.

This is the kind of service I have not encountered at any of the towns or suburbs of Adelaide where I have been stationed.

There has never been any suggestion of additional payment to compensate for the inconvenience suffered by Mr Jelfs. I know mine have not been isolate cases.

As for Mr Downer, mentioned with justifiable scorn in Mr Jelfs letter in the same edition of the Yankalilla News, he was, in my opinion, the most fatuous and tasteless leader the Liberals have ever had while in opposition. Since his tenure, May 1994 to January 1995, was the shortest in Liberal Party history, the liability he represented was clearly recognised by his party. Since while he was foreign Minister, his staff, apparently did not find it necessary to inform him of the ‘kickbacks’ revealed in the Oil for Food revelations of 2006, it is hardly surprising that they did not bother to explain to him what a pharmacy is.

In conclusion, I am quite sure that I speak to the great majority of the citizens of this area when I assure Mr Jelfs of our appreciation of his years of unstinting service to this community and offer him our unqualified support for the future.

FOX CREEK WINE FLEURIEU PENINSULA SHEEP DOG TRIALS

ox Creek Wine Fleurieu Peninsula Sheep Dog Trials will be held at the Yankalilla Showgrounds - Main South Road Yankalilla on the 2nd and 3rd of March. The trialling will begin at 8.30am and continue until abut 5.30 each day. Entries are expected from around SA, VIC and NSW.

Admission will be by gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Lions Clubs Charities. Local entries are invited in the Encourage Class. This class is for dogs of beginner status.

The BBQ will be cooking all day, both days to keep you fed. Soft drinks will also be available.

Marquees will be erected so you can relax in

comfort and watch the dogs work.

NEW NAME FOR LOCAL CHURCH

F

leurieu Assembly of God Church was started approximately 20 years ago by Pastor Peter Moore and after having the use of the RSL Hall for many years, we purchased our present building in Yankalilla. Pastor Peter retired at the end of last year and the Church has continued as a place of Worship, with input from members of its congregation and visiting Pastors and speakers.

The church members have decided to change the church name to YANKALILLA COMMUNITY CHURCH, as we believe this new name better describes our involvement in the local community.

Our Sunday service commences at 10am, and Holy Communion is celebrated each week.

We offer a friendly welcome to all new and past members, and there is always tea,

coffee and fellowship after the service.

We continue to be affiliated with Australian Christian Churches Many improvements to the sanctuary have been made during this year, thus making a more comfortable environment during winter and summer. There is plenty of offroad parking at the rear of the Church.

YANKALILLA LADIES PROBUS

I

n November we wound up a year of friendship and enrichment by celebrating our 17th birthday. Along with our partners, and visitors from eight other Southern Fleurieu Ladies Probus groups, we celebrated this auspicious occasion with a luncheon at Min Palace. Some of those attending expressed their relief that it was

the club that was turning seventeen and not themselves! I take this as a good sign that those members have no regrets for a life well lived! And still being well lived! The year was a stimulating one, our guest speakers sharing with us their experiences in events as far flung as saving bears in Asia, extending a caring hand to orphans in India, or climbing a peak in the Himalayas.

Following the lovely meal, we were entertained by some of Maureen McKenzie's humorous monologues. Our last Bulletin for the year saw us leave with a pleasing reminder attributed to Nancy Reagan: A woman is like a teabag - only in hot water do you realise how strong she is.

he Friends of Rapid Bay jetty have contacted the Department of Transport, Energy & Infrastructure to find out the latest news on the new jetty at Rapid Bay. The project manager from DTEI has provided the following update: “Bardavcol presented the results of the geotechnical investigation to DTEI earlier this week. The report is considered to provide all of the necessary information for the short-listed companies to undertake the final design and costing for the project.

DTEI plan to have the information to the two companies in the near future so they can prepare final designs and quotes to undertake the work. These tenders will be assessed and the project awarded to the successful company. This is expected to

take several months but will still hope to have work underway on site before the middle of the year and completed for the target date of the end of 2008.

At this stage DTEI will not be undertaking any work at Rapid Bay over the summer so the site will be available for divers and anglers (including on the existing jetty up to the safety barrier)”.

t Christmas time, residents and visitors to the district enjoyed the opportunity to attend The Nativity in the Second Valley Hall. Christmas 2007 again saw a packed hall with the crowd overflowing into the foyer. The attendance bears testament to the popularity of this wonderful event.

For seventeen years this tradition has been organised by Bill and Jean Leckie.

Bill encourages willing souls, with voice, to join the choir. These voices come together magnificently to give a mighty rendition of carols, a fine effort. Jean coaxes and coaches local students to recite the nine lessons, which they do with clear diction and confidence, and the tiny tots enact the nativity scene. Sometimes they add their own scenes, to the amusement of the audience. Bill and Jean’s elves assist with background help and provide the piano playing, conducting the music, decorating

the hall and dressing the angels and shepherds.

Thankyou Bill and Jean for giving the community the opportunity to hear the Christmas story, exchange greetings and share in the joy of the festive season. Your noble gesture is immeasurable and so greatly appreciated by all who have attended this annual function.

E have been examining the bible evidence that the Kingdom of God will be established upon earth and that it’s throne will be the restored throne of David and the Lord Jesus Christ will sit on his ancestral throne and rule from Jerusalem.

In this article we want to examine the prophecies concerning the Jewish population’s acceptance of Messiah and what the scriptures have to say about their coming to grips with the realisation that their Messiah was the one they crucified nearly 2000 years before.

Two thousand years ago the Apostle Peter stood up in the city of Jerusalem and told the Jews of that era (recorded in Acts 3:13-21) that: “ ….the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. …. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the

world began.”

This speech in Jerusalem condemns the Jews who had a hand in the betrayal of Jesus to the Romans for crucifixion – the Apostle Peter said they “delivered up, denied and killed” him and that God raised him again to life and at an appointed time, spoken by the old testament prophets, he would be back in the earth to bring about times of refreshing for Israel and a troubled world.

He will return when the Jewish nation of Israel are in an unprecedented time of trouble. A time when the sovereignty of Jerusalem will become a very great issue with the world body of nations. Take for example the prophecy in Zechariah 12:2-3: “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” This you will see develop in the months and years ahead as nation after nation struggles to handle the core issue between Israeli and Palestinian authorities – the ownership of Jerusalem. When a certain coalition of nations decide to solve the matter militarily by wresting it away from the Israelis and appear to have been successful the long awaited advent of Jesus Christ will bring an intervention that brooks no equal. The Jewish inhabitants of Jerusalem at this time only know that God has delivered them by the hand of the long promised Messiah. Their Messiah long promised in the old testament

prophecies, the Son of David has appeared and devastated their foes – but who is he? A suitable moment for disclosure arrives. He allows himself on some special occasion to be seen in close quarters by the Jewish people. There is no idea of him being Jesus. His hand wounds are spotted raising a curiosity until someone asks the question. The question is divinely pre-recorded in Zechariah 13:6 “And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.” The sequel is recorded in Zechariah chapter 12: 9 -10 “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon …. the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace…. and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him….., as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.”

Around the world the news travels throughout the Jewish communities – It is Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus of Nazareth. Upon this recognition and an individual and national repentance and granted forgiveness the nation is readied to become the head of nations “the first dominion” (Micah 4:8) under a newly constituted arrangement for the world’s nations that will wee Jesus Christ as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:6) and the Prince of Peace.(Isaiah 9:6) PLEASE CHALLENGE ME if you believe the bible to teach differently. he much anticipated Ladies Loreal Day held at Links Lady Bay Golf Course on Friday 23rd November was a fantastic success. Player numbers doubled on last years event, proving without a doubt the ladies can also conquer the sandy terrain of this challenging but well respected course.

The quest to protect Fishery Beach and Lands End

leurieu Peninsula residents and visitors are being asked to help conserve the Lands End/ Fishery Beach Coastal Conservation Reserve, south of Cape Jervis, by not driving off-road vehicles within the reserve. The public are encouraged to explore the environmental and cultural heritage values of the Lands End / Fishery Beach area and see first-hand the tremendous effort by conservation and community groups who have worked to revegetate and conserve the site.

However, the use of off-road vehicles in the reserve, particularly dirt bikes and, to a lesser extent, four-wheel drive vehicles, have damaged heritage items, degraded remnant native vegetation and revegetation sites and led to increased erosion within Fishery Creek as well as degraded the private road used by landholders. The use of off-road vehicles has also detracted from the experience of the general public visiting the area, including those who walk the section of Heysen Trail which traverses the site.

The majority of coastal land making up the Lands End/ Fishery Beach Coastal Conservation Reserve, south of Cape Jervis, was purchased by the Coast Protection Board in the mid 1980's to secure the site from private development and to protect the significant natural and cultural heritage values of the area.

The reserve contains Aboriginal and European Heritage sites including the Talisker Mine Crushing Mill and dressing works c1863 and Cape Jervis Whaling Station c1843.

Since the Board's purchase of the land, the landscape has been transformed, largely by the work of Greening Australia and the countless volunteer hours by conservation groups such as the COOTS group (Conservation of our Threatened Species), Conservation Volunteers, local landholders, school groups and Green Corps groups who have undertaken conservation works on the site since 1997.

Conservation initiatives at the site are coordinated in conjunction with the Cape Jervis Natural Resource Management Group with representatives from the Department for Environment and Heritage, Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource

Management Board, Council, the Coast Protection Board, Greening Australia, local landholders and the Yankalilla District Dunes Working Group.

'Southern Fleurieu Coastal Action Plan and Conservation Priority Study', Caton et al (2007), launched in October 2007, highlights the conservation value of this area and identifies the site as a high priority for immediate action to prevent further degradation from a number of threats including environmental weeds which impact on the biodiversity of the coastal vegetation and the activities of off-road vehicles (ORV).

The Coast Protection Board, supported by officers of the Coastal Management Branch, Department for Environment and Heritage, has invested at least $200,000 over the past 10 years in supporting conservation works and sustainable recreation activities within the area.

The Fishery Beach/ Lands End will benefit from two new conservation projects for the area which will be funded under the Australian Government's Envirofund program which focused on supporting coast and marine conservation projects.

The Surfrider Foundation, in conjunction with the COOTS group, has received over $26,000 to improve coastal biodiversity at Lands End and Fishery Beach through weed removal and revegetation.

Greening Australia has received almost $7,000 to reduce sediment discharge from Fishery Creek into the marine environment through erosion control and to increase biodiversity.

These projects will form a valuable addition to previous conservation efforts at the site.

Should we trust our dreams?

Do you have dreams? Most do.

Some dreams are bizarre. It makes you wonder where they come from. I remember, in a dream, travelling overseas in a big plane and going for a walk on the wing. Someone locked the door and left me out there.

What about when dreams come true?

I needed to go to Minlaton on Yorke Peninsular and I dreamed that my old Holden ute wouldn’t make it. It didn’t.

But, the scary thing was that in the dream I saw the town in which it broke down and the garage where it was taken for repairs – also that I had to leave it and hitch hike. How do you explain dreams like that?

Meanings You can have all kinds of dreams and wonder what they mean. Some appear to say something while others leave us baffled.

The infant Jesus was spared through a dream. Pilate’s wife was disturbed by a dream.

The dreams of Joseph, recorded in the book of Genesis, and his amazing ability to interpret them led to his jealous brothers selling him off as a slave to Egypt. However, his interpreting genius won him fame and his accurate interpretations of the dreams of Pharoah helped make him the overseer of Egypt.

Historical dream The ancient king Nebuchadnezzar had a dream which disturbed him no end.

When he called in magicians and enchanters they said, ‘tell us your dream and we will interpret it.’ (Daniel 2:4) The wily king, however, demanded that they first tell him what he saw in his dream. If they couldn’t do that, he reasoned, they couldn’t interpret it.

They said, ‘There is no man on earth who can do what the king asks.’ He became so angry he ordered the execution of all such people.

Disturbed by this drastic action a young Jewish fellow named Daniel, prayed that God would show him what the royal dream was. He approached the king.

The king asked, ‘Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?’

To which Daniel said, ‘No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.’’

The dream Daniel said, ‘You looked, O king, and there before you stood a large statue-an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance. The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them.

Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were broken to pieces at the same time and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a

trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.’ Dan 2:31-35 Daniel said that the image represented four successive empires indicated by it’s metals. The dream came astonishingly true. The Babylonian empire (head of gold) was succeeded by the Persian, Greek and Roman empires.

As predicted, the empires rose and fell.

The rock that was cut out not with human hands that struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and then became a huge mountain is the key to the dream.

It indicates that there is an unseen superior power that controls the destiny of nations and peoples.

"In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.’ Dan 2:44-45 The king said to Daniel, "Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery."

King Nebuchadnezzar had some hard lessons to learn and we need to learn them too. He had to learn that God’s kingdom ‘is an eternal kingdom; his dominion endures from generation to

generation.’

Further dreams and disturbances taught him that ‘the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes.’ Dan 4:32 Two ways I knew a man who was disturbed by a dream. In it he was shown two roads. The first was gold paved and looked terrific.

As he walked along it became stony and rough. Rougher it became until he struggled over boulders and fell into a ditch.

He tried the other road. It was rough at the start. He could hardly move. After awhile it improved. Smother and better the road became until it was paved with gold.

The dream showed him two paths of life with opposite beginnings and ends. Jesus defined the way to life as narrow and hard and the way to destruction as broad and easy.

We need to be on the right road. Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life: no one goes to the Father except by me.’

Should we trust our dreams? They can certainly make us think. Some of the dreams of the Bible and their spectacular fulfilment assure us God can speak to us through them.

A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH WORDSWORTH

pon arrival at Lake Windamere we disembarked from our coach at one of the working railway stops.

To our amazement we discovered we stood right in the middle of what appeared to be the base of Thomas the Tank and his friends. As we waited and admired these handsome engines, there was the anticipation of The Fat Controller announcing arrivals and departures.

To our disappointment the next voice we heard was the tour director organising our group to climb aboard the waiting carriage for the interesting, scenic steam train journey.

Although just a comparatively short trip, the surrounding countryside was reminiscent of a picture postcard.

We alighted from our train to proceed onto the deck of our pleasure cruise boat where crew members were there to welcome us. Most of our group had been bemoaning the fact that there had been no stops for refreshment.

However, to our delight we had only just settled ourselves into our seats than we were treated to a most welcome light morning tea which sated our hunger pains.

The 12 mile boat journey came to an end much too quickly and it was time to disembark from our craft and once again board our coach for the next leg of our Lakes journey, Grasmere for lunch.

We found a charming little village shop where we purchased our lunch of local bread, cheese and a drink to wash it all down. The next objective was to find somewhere quiet and out of the way to enjoy this restful sojourn.

Eventually arriving at the local churchyard with entry via a quaint gate, we spotted a lovely, flat green patch of lawn alongside a tombstone. Imagine our surprise when we noted the engraved name on this memorial, none other than William Wordsworth. As we shared our lunch with the jackdaws, blackbirds and sparrows, we reflected upon the fact that we could not have chosen a more apt location than this to share the solitude and, perhaps think of poems that this prolific writer and poet endorsed in earlier times.

Too soon, we had to depart this idyllic spot and once again head towards our transport for yet another venture into unknown horizons, this time Gretna Green, place of elopements and clandestine marriages. Now I must admit I

always had intriguing images about Gretna Green and it’s romantic connections.

It is only fair to say that for tourist purposes it is an income earner and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to Gretna Green which is commendable.

Personally I felt the entire atmosphere, although authentic in design, meaning, and historical memorabilia, seemed to have undertones of a theatrical presentation including a mock ‘wedding’, which spoilt for me the true origins of the legend of Gretna Green.

(It is worth mentioning during the last year or so, on a programme titled ‘Global Village’, there was an episode dedicated to Gretna Green and it’s traditional weddings. The ceremony has been so commercialised and touted since we visited years ago, portrayed very much like an orchestrated event with everything laid on, wedding, outfits available for either purchase or hire, reception, bridal suite, accommodation for guests and bridal party all included in the overall cost.)

It was with some relief we boarded our bus for the next destination and our accommodation for that night overlooking the airport at Glasgow.

It is that time again where I must temporarily halt this narrative and trust you will await next month’s instalment as our tour continues.

BUNGALA RESIDENTS & RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION

he Bungala Residents & Ratepayers Association exists only to serve and provide the community with a voice to express their opinion, to those involved, on matters that concern them.

Usually community opinions come to the fore when crises are looming – which is too late for prevention.

Rather, would it not be better to have an informed community preventing such events.

To do this one must participate and be informed.

During the past three months we have been in communication with Council and are endeavouring to work positively with them on issues.

These things will not happen overnight and it will take time to evolve. To this end we invite you to join The Bungala Residents & Ratepayers Association.

Without an immediate increase in membership the Association cannot function satisfactorily and opportunities will be lost.

The next meeting of BRRA will be on Wednesday 6th February 2008 (7.00 p.m.

fter a record fundraising year, our new year has started well from our AGM in July, with some changes in our ranks. Shirley Lienert and Mary Perry are Co-Presidents (sharing the roll of President extremely effectively); Ronis Hicks Secretary; and Vivienne West - Treasurer.

This year our Baby Competition Entrant is Ella Shierlaw, daughter of Tim and Kate Shierlaw, and granddaughter of long time members of our Branch, Mary and Jo Shierlaw.

Catering is a very good fundraiser for us, and we have catered for two functions so far, as well as the refreshments at the monthly Inman Valley Market - the first Saturday of each month.

shearing shed in September was a superb night and a very successful event, and a Garden Party at the home of our Secretary, Ronis Hicks in November was a lovely way to spend an afternoon, if a bit on the warm side. Our Christmas wind up at the Grosvenor Hotel was held on December 4th.

Four of our members attended State Conference in October, and we also support the Blood Bank when it comes to Victor Harbor. Our Branch was represented by Mary Shierlaw and Shirley Lienert at the Service Clubs Dinner.

The hire of Baby Capsules is very efficiently run by a small group of our members with the help of other volunteers from the community. Child Car Seats are also available for hire short term.

he Fleurieu Peninsula will star in a national television show expected to be watched by 500,000 Channel 7 viewers around the country.

Mercurio’s Menu will screen on the weekends on Channel 7 and feature Strictly Ballroom star and Dancing with the Stars judge Paul Mercurio.

A television crew were in the region from 6 to 11 December filming the episode which is expected to go to air in February.

Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Marketing Manager Roz Becker said Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism and the South Australian Tourism Commission had worked hard to get the show to the region, providing information on the numerous food tourism operators that have helped make Fleurieu food famous.

“Not only will this give the Fleurieu Peninsula national exposure, but it will also give us access to digital footage that we can use in future marketing campaigns,” Ms Becker says.

Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre End of Year Celebrations!

he Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre held their end of year celebrations on Thursday 13th December. The parents, grandparents and children were treated to an “Australiana” themed musical performance by the centre children, entertainment by Fritz the clown, a sausage sizzle tea and a visit from Father Christmas. It was a fantastic night enjoyed by over 50 families.

With a captive audience, the centre took the opportunity to hold a brief AGM when the highlights and achievements of the past year were presented by outgoing Governing Council Chairperson - Aditya Gitsham.

They included: The creation, review and implementation of new policies – including achieving the Start

A thankyou was given to outgoing Governing Council Members - Vice Chairperson – Erica Widdop, Secretary – Coral Ward, Treasurer – Kerrie-Anne Hughes and co mmittee m e mb e r s ; A n n e t t e K e r , Michelle Shute, Bridget Fox and Melissa Berryman.

The formalities of the evening were concluded with the election of the 2008 Governing Council. Hooded Plover Birds are Nesting at Carrickalinga North and Haycock Point

he small Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) birds are found nesting and foraging these beaches they are a Threatened species. There are about 75 pairs left in the Fleurieu, so protecting their beach habitat is extremely important. This time of year they are attempting to breed by making a small “nest” on the beach to lay their eggs.

Hooded Plovers live on ocean beaches and on coastal dunes. The Hooded Plover's diet includes insects, sandhoppers (Orchestia sp.), small bivalves, and soldier crabs (Mictyris platycheles). It forages at all levels of the beach during all tide phases. It is most usually seen in pairs or small groups, darting about at the water's edge as waves recede, bobbing and pecking along the shore. They are usually found in pairs.

Hooded Plovers are particularly vulnerable in the first stages of their lives.

The major threat to the success of these birds breeding are DOGS that are left to run free on the beaches and people who are invading their space. The birds incubate the eggs for 28 days and then raising the chicks for 35 days.

The District Council of Yankalilla have roped off the nest at Carrickalinga North and have placed signs at Haycock Point.

t the December meeting we held a Christmas lunch at our clubrooms where we invited our group President Melva Milvers and eight of our linch branch Clapham members joined us. We also welcomed back members Betty Cain, Wyn Kenyon, Joyce Hall, Blanche Harvey who had been sick. Wilma Pearce was another special surprise visitor as our first task for the day was for our Group President Melva to present Wilma’s sister Heather Pile, our foundation member, with a 10 year membership certificate. This was an absolute surprise for Heather and she was over-whelmed by the presentation. It was a great honour for our branch to give this outstanding accomplishment to a person who has dedicated all her life to C.W.A. Our lovely meal of roast turkey and salads followed by Christmas Pudding and Heather’s popular brandy sauce custard was enjoyed by everyone.

A social afternoon of singing Christmas carols with Heather at the organ and some Christmas competitions completed a lovely day.

Members were reminded of our duties for the Normanville Nippers surf life saving carnival held on December 16th our branch helped with a food stall.

nother year sees new limits in the PBS scheme. This year General Benefits people need to spend $1141.80 on prescriptions them for the rest of the calendar year the cost of prescriptions falls to the same rate as concessional patients.

The normal maximum charge per item is $31.30 plus perhaps a few additional charges for more expensive brands or extra government charges. Of course many items fall below the maximum rate. Another interesting fact is that not all the

costs per prescription goes towards totals, making it fairly difficult to do the calculations.

The concessional charge per prescription has only gone up 10c thus making it $5 but 58 items (or $290) are required before the charge is removed. If you go to one pharmacy predominately then you totals will be worked often and you will be told when you reach the limits.

Of course it is made more difficult the more pharmacies you go to but of course not impossible.

5EFM’s Normanville remote transmitter back on air

EFM’s Remote trans mitter at Normanville Heights is now back on air after a long period of being off air. Many thanks to all our listeners in the Yankalilla District for your understanding and patience.

For the moment the transmitter is working on half power due to a technical problem with our two frequencies being too close. Our Yankalilla frequency of 88.3 is causing interference to our incoming signal of 89.3 from Victor Harbor and our current filter system is unable to filter out the 88.3 frequency. The cost of a new filter system is prohibitive.

To overcome this, 5EFM has applied to the ACMA for another frequency that will give us a greater separation from our incoming frequency of 89.3. A successful test has been conducted with another frequency; this test proves that this will overcome the problem entirely.

All of our listeners will be informed of any frequency change that will replace our current frequency of 88.3 in the Yankalilla District.
