i everyone!

Council has made a few headlines recently with the resignation of Parawa Ward Councillor Nigel Brand, the continuing debate over the redevelopment of the chambers and the new councillor allowances. There are plenty of opinions on these subjects in this issue.

Congratulations once again to the Normanville New Years Eve Pageant team.

Great turnout and the usual array of colourful entrants. Remember, this year will be the 10th Anniversary for our well known pageant. Of course we had to fill up the cover with the pageant pictures, taken by Joseph.

The Lions Christmas Eve show was on again at the Normanville Mitre 10 car park.

It was well attended and the kids got to sit on Santa’s lap and receive a bag of goodies.

How many times have we just thought…

he Yankalilla Dragons Soccer Club will be holding Registration Days at Yankalilla Area School on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of January 07 at l0am - 11.30am for both junior and seniors.

Juniors: Boys and Girls will be playing in

the School competition. Seniors: A team has been entered into the SA Amateur Soccer League Sunday Div 7. Also needed coaches, support staff , volunteers and sponsors. Be a part of the birth of Soccer in the Fleurieu. We thank the sponsors that have already jumped aboard and the people in the community that have supported our effort to get a Soccer Club up and running.

Our preferred way of receiving your adverts and articles is in a computer file, either by email as our first preference or saved on disc.

If you have any queries before placing your advert or article, please email us on yanknews@normanville-news.com.au or yankalillanews@normanville.biz, if this is not possible by phone on 8558 3446 extension 6. If the office is unattended a detailed message can be left with your instructions or enquiry.

If supplying information as computer files is not possible, please submit it in an easy to read, clear format, either hand delivered, by post or fax. Please note that items being delivered by hand via the newsagency will be passed on to the Yankalilla Regional News staff. Please note, the newsagency staff are unable to help with any details on costs etc., as they are not trained in this area.

If all of this seems a bit overwhelming just remember to keep it simple. We just need to know how much you wish to spend on your advertisement as this helps determine the size; all the details you wish included along with any logos you already have & how many editions you wish to be in. If you haven’t already got an advertising agent don’t worry, we have a graphic designer ready to take your details and turn them into a professionally designed advertisement. For those articles being handwritten we do have an administration team to take care of this for you if necessary whilst remembering that email is a preferred option.

ong time Yankalilla v e t e r a n volunteers Ron and Glad ys Fielke have been honoured by the Yankalilla District Council as joint recipients of the “Citizen of the Year” awards.

The awards were presented at the Council’s annual Australia Day ceremonies held at Rapid Bay on January 26 2007.

The 80 plus year olds have been stalwarts of the community, their involvement with Meals on Wheels spanning 27 years. Glad has been involved for all of this time, being a founding member of the branch, has her 25 Years service Award and still spends 3 shifts a month on kitchen

supervision. Ron has nearly 10 years of service and has been presented with his 7 Year Award.

He does 3 shifts of kitchen helper each month.

On top of that, they organise and manage, still as volunteers, the local Meals on Wheels Variety Store, which has been a successful source of income for the branch and has enabled it to enhance and keep up to date, its facilities and utensils. The shop also enables the branch to send an annual funds contribution to Head Office.

Outside of Meals on Wheels, they have both had other involvements in community activities spanning many years, including the Yankalilla Sporting Clubs and the Historical Society of Yankalilla.

District Council of Yankalilla Community Based Focus Groups As part of Council’s Social Planning Project February 2007 quarter of the residents of the Yankalilla Community responded to the ‘Community Survey’. Now it is your chance to be part of the next stage which is attending the community focus groups.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB

he new sailing season commenced in November and most Sundays have been conducive to sailing. There have been good turnouts each week with over 10 boats consistently on the water. The Arafura Cad ets have gained in popularity with 4 to 5 sailing each week but there has been a noticeable lack of dinghies.

Hopefully this will be rectified to beef up competition in this class. We also welcome Dave Carragher back as a sailing member after a break of several years and hope he has rejoined with renewed enthusiasm for the sport.

It is good to see that some members are venturing out into the wider world, with a number attending the State and National Championships in Adelaide this season. In particular, Peter Nicholson will be representing the Club in his Mosquito at Christies Beach and most of the Arafura Cadets will also be contesting the titles. We wish

them all well, especially since most of the latter are entering for the first time.

The Club was most pleased to be successful in obtaining a grant from the State Office of Recreation and Sport under the Active Club Program. This amounted to $5000 and was presented to Gavin Schubert (Vice-commodore) by the local member for Finniss, Michael Pengilly MP (see photo – courtesy of Tony Proctor). This will help to upgrade the Club’s rescue boat and improve safety for members. It is a significant boost to Club funds, and special thanks to those members who put in the application.

We are looking forward to this being a great sailing season and you can see us racing near the Normanville jetty on nearly every Sunday through to the end of April. Remember, we would be happy to arrange a trial sail if you are interested. Some people have already approached us and we welcome more. It doesn’t

matter how much sailing you’ve done, you’ll still be welcome.

We are a friendly group who love the sport and we encourage new comers. If you are interested call Steve Rogers on 8598 5244 or Stuart Gibbs on 8558 3399 and arrange to join us for a sail and meet the crew.

We usually socialise after racing and have regular BBQ’s over the summer period.

competitors with Alex Bigg taking out the Open prize and Ben Zygmant placing in the Under 15’s. This year the Bike Comp was introduced with all places being awarded to local riders – Well Done!!

The event attracts the whole family and really gives the skaters and riders a chance to showcase their amazing skills.

Mike Peake and his team lead the skating demo’s with some truly awesome tricks, with Mark on his bike showing everyone how to do it. Budding and experienced skaters demonstrated their skill to the tunes of DJ Shep from Da Klinic. Onlookers could take a spell from the competition and have a go on the Horizontal Bungee Run or watch a professional aerosol artist at work.

Mining

he recent granting of an exploration licence to Marathon Resources to explore for uranium in the Yankalilla district, resulted in a public meeting, and two things amongst others, to come out of this meeting was a 100% agreement to disallow uranium mining in the district and a resolve to pressure government to change legislation to prevent corporations having all the rights when it comes to mining and landowners having none.

This change in legislation will be hard to do but in relation to uranium mining is the fact that we do not need to build nuclear power stations or even mine for uranium in order for us to reduce carbon dioxide, create wealth for Australia, or produce power. Australia's future does not lie in mining uranium and nuclear power. Australia's future lies in solar thermal power and renewables. If we were to build nuclear power stations, as we are a dry country, they would have to be near the sea because of the huge amount of cooling water needed. There are other means of cooling but they are all ex c e edi n gl y m u ch m o re expensive. And they would need to be in populated areas and one day it will be not if but when they and their fuel is attacked by terrorists.

Districts such as this one will be under constant pressure into the future for uranium mining because high grade uranium with increasing demand is

predicted to last only 20 years.

The people of the Yankalilla district have to realize and by spreading the word around that they will have a far better chance of changing the legislation and preventing future exploration and mining of uranium in their district if they understand that the world has and we have, already in Australia, technology that allows us to produce large amounts of base power from the sun. This is in stark contrast to the message that the prime minister and the government deliver. However the proposed solar station near Mildura is not a solar thermal station though it is concentrated solar power but it cannot produce power 24 hours a day. Concentrated solar power is used in many countries but the star performer of this type of power is solar thermal power because it can produce base, medium and peak power from the sun 24 hours a day! It does this by using storage and in Australia scientists have done this in a unique way by splitting ammonia during the day and recombining it at night, during cloudy weather and varying loads. In fact scientists say the potential for solar thermal power is so huge that even if we had no coal, oil, gas, hydro, geothermal or nuclear power we could and would still flourish. In practice a range of renewables will happen. And it has been said that the quickest way to address the Stern Report ten year time slot environmentally, economically and strategically is

for the world to shift from a carbon economy to a solar economy straight away. Linked technology of solar thermal power is the production of hydrogen for motor vehicles and other spin-offs making it 8090% efficient. Experience in other countries in present day cost to the consumer has shown that without carbon trading it is now approx 18cents/KWH. And the trend in cost is going downwards not upwards. A solar thermal station has been proposed by the Whyalla City Council in their area in partnership with Wizard Power and ANU and this station would have also provided power for a desal plant but the government has not given the go ahead despite the premier claiming this sate is a solar one and is going to have the power come from the grid! They also appear not to have given approval for a demonstration unit either.

People of Yankalilla and surrounding towns and indeed all of Australia will need to spread the word and lobby hard the government immediately if we are to change government attitude and legislation on this issue.

have placed the following notice on the Normanville Notice Board, that there is a report in front of the Minister for Local Government at this

moment. I have a copy of these recommendations, downloaded from the Internet if anyone wants to see it.

The information re this paper's existence came from a person in the Local Government Association office.

In answer to my question of "what if Councillors have exceeded the recommended allowance" I was told they would have to take a reduction if these recommendations were passed by the Minister. Anyone who pays rates should find out what their Councillor's receive and how much is recommended by the LGA. I think it would be more effective if everyone wrote to her separately with their concerns.

big festive YCCC hello to you all. We had our family night on the 13th Dec. The children sang Christmas songs and performed a nativity play.

They all looked absolutely gorgeous! Once again, Fritz the clown entertained us all then a visit from Father Christmas capped the night off. A Big thank you to Martin Godwin, General Manager of the Links Lady Bay, for helping us bring

Santa from the North Pole. A special presentation was given to Louise for her work in making individual Christmas gifts for the children in childcare. Thanks Louise! Mary Delosso has completed her Preschool Teachers contract for 2006 at the centre. Luckily we will not be losing her, but we do welcome Ms Rosalie LangleyWatson who joins the teaching staff as our new Preschool teacher. We give a fond farewell to our kindy children who leave Reception next term, they are Mackenzie, Denver, Zayli, Kayla, Cain, John F, Cameron, Olivia, Brianna, Jenna, John M, Erin and Orion. Good luck, we will miss you. Governing Council also met during the family night and we have some new and familiar faces representing the Centre. They are Melissa Berryman, Aditya

FIRST STAGE OF $40 MILLION SOUTH SHORES DEVELOPMENT IS NOW COMPLETE

he South Shores development at Normanville is now taking shape. With the first 28 of the 92 villas now complete, both residents and holiday makers are enjoying their first summer at South Shores.

Construction of the lagoon is now complete with the water entering through the natural aquifer.

his year's parade once again was a huge success with around 40 floats singing, dancing and performing their way to the foreshore from Katherine Drive.

There were more decorated floats than ever and the standard was excellent; great effort.

Congratulations to all those who entered and put in so much work to make their floats very impressive.

This years winners were “The Village People”, 2nd prize “The Beatles”, 3rd prize “Combined Churches” 4th Prize “Aussie Back Yards”, 5th “The Wiggles” and Best Walker prize went to “Superman”.

Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics provided a spectacular fireworks display to end the night. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors.

espite this year's parade being a huge success, one major issue marred the night. Excessive, irresponsible usage of water!

Unfortunately if this behaviour continues we will not have a parade. Nobody wants themselves or their children to be a sitting target for: • frozen water bombs (who would even think this would be amusing, let alone brag about it) • broken glass (this doesn’t even require a comment to the morons) • fruit - why?

• full pressure hoses (the disappointment on the little children’s faces who went to great lengths to dress up and have their faces painted, being absolutely devastated when they no longer looked the part).

Along with any thing else the crowd saw fit to pelt at the people in the parade.

Whilst we know there has been a friendly rivalry between floats and spectators, this has gone way too far. There have been many reports from this years parade of children (some little babies) being targets of missiles. These object were being pelted at their bodies and heads

with quite a few suffering bruising and not being willing to participate again in what should be a fantastic experience for them. Why would you want to instil fear into little children or try and injure them? I would like to add that some of the people involved in this irresponsible behaviour are not just teenagers or children but middle aged, local, supposedly responsible grandmothers and grandfathers who should know better! We have had reports of cars being dented by ½ full cans and stubbies being hurled at them. Also electrical equipment being damaged; you enjoyed the music but now most of our amps and speakers are damaged beyond repair. Other reports of near tragic accidents with floats having to brake suddenly and nearly throwing their float members off of trailers.

Even worse, one float driver was lucky he just hit the brakes and didn't career off into the crowd when he was pelted in the cab of his brand new $70,000 4wd with an exploding water bomb, his electrical system was also not happy. Another issue is when you wet some trailers and truck floors they become extremely slippery, another potential disaster waiting to happen. At this years parade we

will insist that this behaviour is stopped. All floats entering the parade will do so on the condition that absolutely no water or weapons of any description be used and we will request that the spectators use a little commonsense and respect that our parade is not a war zone and that no water or missiles are to be used.

This will be enforced by security guards and signs will be erected along the route and there will be a letter drop to the houses along the route also. Our police have also promised that any drunkenness

along the parade route will not be tolerated as well as an increased involvement in the prevention of any problems. To the culprits of this anti-social behaviour, be very aware that causing injury to another person or their property is a criminal act and you can be prosecuted accordingly! Also be mindful that what sometimes starts out as a bit of fun usually ends in tears for those on the receiving end.

With that all in mind we look forward to an exciting and safe 10th anniversary 2007 Parade.

Council elected members also receive petrol, phone & baby sitting allowances, while Yankalilla’s mayor has a petrol card. Was there merit in raising Yankalilla councillor's allowances? The Local Government Association requested McGregor Tan Research to survey 403 Adelaide & 103 Regional adults as to what they thought Councillors should be paid via their allowances. Allowances were not set on merit but by what some ratepayers thought they should get.

“The Local Government (Members Allowances and Benefits) Regulations 1999 set the minimum and maximum base amount for Council Members’ allowances. The amendment to these Regulations came into effect from 13 November 2006, with the new minimum base amount being $1,820 and the maximum base amount being $15,000. These Regulations were made by the Governor on 31 August 2006.” Quote from LGA email.

A look at some recent statistics might be illuminating. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (last updated 30th June 2006) has the following estimated resident population figures: Yankalilla = 4,104 residents, Victor Harbor = 12,355 residents, Playford Council chosen at random as an example of choosing to increase their allowances to the maximum level has 71,390 residents.

Yankalilla has 9 elected members which includes the mayor and deputy mayor (who are selected by the council rather than publicly-elected) at a base cost of $108,000 (9 members x $12,000);

Victor Harbor has 9 councillors plus a publiclyelected mayor and deputy mayor making a total of 11 representatives at a base cost of $132,000; and Playford has 15 councillors plus an elected mayor making a total of 16 representatives at a base cost of $240,000.

Therefore, Yankalilla councillors ‘represent’ 456 residents each at a ‘per resident allowance’ of $26.13; Victor Harbor councillors ‘represent’ residents 1123 each at a ‘per resident allowance’ of $10.68; and Playford councillors ‘represent’ 4462 residents each at a ‘per resident allowance of $3.36 (Playford councillors receive $15,000 a year).

Why is it so much more expensive for Yankalilla district? If we were to take the Victor Harbor Council as the norm for workload (and not the frugal Playford Council), we should expect to have 4 or 5 councillors representing Yankalilla rather than the current 9.

Yankalilla’s budget for 2006/07, stated that the amount of funds needed would be $7,050,400.

“If Council does not raise this amount of money then it will need to consider one of the following options: reducing the level/type of services it provides, increasing the level of debt.” Quote from budget paper.

I am not suggesting that councillors don’t deserve some recompense, but most people see election to local council as an opportunity to serve the community rather than as a part-time, publicly-funded job. Yankalilla has a large number of volunteers (CFS, ambos, dune care, senior citizens centre, ACH, sporting clubs etc) who do not get paid for their work but who contribute enormously to the community.

As a rate payer I think amalgamation, and/or a reduction in Councillor Numbers, plus looking at work performance merit, and keeping the Council Chambers we have, can only benefit our area.

I would be interested in hearing how our councillors explain this self-granted pay rise in light of the above comparisons. It does not appear to be because of merit.

The much used and needed toilets next to the council office will be demolished, leaving Yankalilla Township with a ladies two cubicle toilet and one men’s cubicle toilet, a 3 man urinal and one disabled toilet, for the use of visitors and locals. These are inadequate now. The parking for vehicles with boats and caravans and trucks etc is most suitable at the council offices as there is no other suitable parking on the left or right hand side of the road. Perhaps if the councillors involve themselves in the wider community and looked at the state of our footpaths, roads and other facilities that are substandard in this area, they would certainly have a better understanding of what is needed in the whole district of Yankalilla.

It was a most informative day and it gave me an insight of how many people are volunteering in South Australia and other states. I also gained an understanding of what is important when aiming to involve people from diverse communities with volunteering. It was a pleasure to meet up with Michelle Hales, who was our prior District Council of Yankalilla Economic Development and Tourism Officer.

Michelle took up the position as Community Development Officer with the Roxby Downs Council Inc. Roxby Power & Roxby Water, a month after leaving her position with the District Council of Yankalilla. This new position has given her the opportunity to work in different areas and travel to other states.

wish to object to the new elected council members increasing their allowances.

No concern for our ratepayers and residents in this area. How can these people justify the steep increases, when a lot of people in this community are finding it difficult with everyday living? I do applaud the two councillors who spoke up against a steep increase. How do the members of the community feel, with so many volunteering their time in so many organisations without any financial help, up to 7 days a week?

The new council renovations and new tourist office and community centre, if they go ahead, one can only guess that our rates will have to be increased substantially to cover the initial and ongoing costs.

Call for Expressions of Interest Independent Members of the Yankalilla Development Assessment Panel The District Council of Yankalilla is currently seeking expressions of interest from members of the community who would like to be part of the Yankalilla Development Assessment Panel (DAP).

It is anticipated that up to four members who are independent from Council will be appointed (by Council) to a DAP which will be comprised of up to seven members. The role of the DAP is to make decisions on planning applications pursuant to delegations from Council and to advise on Development Assessment issues and trends.

Independent members of the DAP should have a sound interest in planning and must have a reasonable knowledge of the Development Act. Ideally, independent members should possess qualifications or experience that is relevant to development assessment. It is anticipated that independent members could come from the fields of town planning, architecture, environmental planning. social geography, landscape architecture, civil engineering, law, building, local government or any other field that is relevant to the activities of the Panel. The Presiding Member will be chosen from the independent members and ideally will have experience in chairing formal meetings similar to the DAP. While not mandatory, preference will be given to people who live within the Council area and who have a sound knowledge of the issues relating to the district and an understanding of Council’s Development Plan.

Independent members will be compensated for their time and expertise by an appropriate level of remuneration to be determined by Council. It is anticipated that the new Panel will commence in March 2007, with meetings to be scheduled during business hours.

So it proved a very interesting theme for our book discuss group organised by the Friends of Yankalilla Library on 27thNovember at the Colombia coffee shop. We started with trying to define the criteria used for choosing the Booker prize. There was some hesitation on this point, as many of the group did not consider that the books chosen were the best written for the year they were published. We did note that often they were on a topical subject but also out of a list of

40 books chosen only ten women were represented. However it seems that authors have to agree to be put forward for the prize and many authors do not need the publicity or the money.

Authors read by this group were Keri Hulme, AS Byatt, Peter Carey, Paul Scott, Alan Hollinghurst, William Golding, Arundhati Roy and Penelope Lively. Some loved the book that they had chosen and others did not enjoy their choice at all and wondered how it could have won a prize. Even when more than one person had read the same book there was no unanimity on it’s quality We had a lively discussion on all the books, often leading to suggestions of other books to read. An open letter to Yankalilla Councillors and Council Officers.

have now, on a number of occasions, drawn attention to the failure of the Yankallila Council to carry out the minimal work required to exclude 4WDs from Haycock Point, Carrickalinga.

At least one long serving, Carrickalinga Ward Councillor, a resident of the North Bay, must have observed the growing vehicle track on the southern slope of Haycock Point. He will know no effective effort has been made to deny vehicular access from that southern side. He must also observe the 5 uprights on the northern side are simply inadequate and are being driven around.

It is impossible for even the most out of touch and disinterested to avoid noticing.

Yet, on the face of it this particular councillor has shown no apparent interest at all, despite the fact he must pass at least the southern track every time he returns from town.

Note well Council and Councillors: at 8.45pm in the dusk of New Years Eve 2006, an old style 4 seater Toyota 4WD suddenly appeared over the summit from the north, losing control and unable to brake, careened down the northern foot track, tumbling onto the roadway, narrowly missing those 5 ineffectual posts at he bottom of the southern slope. The driver then stopped on the Gold Coast Drive to inspect for under side damage to his vehicle.

At 8:47pm, a woman climbed that southern track to make a mobile phone call from the summit, (there being no signal south of Haycock Point. Had she commenced her climb just 120 seconds earlier she would have surely been killed!

Four days earlier an un-helmented youth, on an unregistered 4WD Ag bike, attempted the southern slop and almost up-ended his vehicle. The danger of these vehicles is well recognised let alone in the hands of a youth oblivious to the most basic safety. He then spent the day driving the local streets instead.

Now, as for the youth, had he become a quadraplegic, our council may convince the court it was not their negligence that allowed that bike to flip on the hill and thus avoid millions in damages. No such argument can apply to a mobile phone caller run down by a 4WD. Our council, being well aware of the inevitability, has declined to erect a simple, adequate vehicle barrier.

The best our council could hope for is that the unfortunate victim dies thus minimising the damages awarded for ongoing support.

The interesting point moves then to whether individual councillors, being aware of the danger and risk, and having remained silent, are also liable. Presumably the council also insures them for negligence and failure of duty of care?

Council, I suggest you save the expense of seeking legal opinion and simply install a proper log barrier to both sides of Haycock Point now!

The cost is tiny and nothing when compared to the life of a child or adult. Do it once and do it right!

But should that not happen, the injured or bereaved are free to make this open letter plaintiff’s exhibit No. 1.

A leap ahead for Forest for Frogs 2007 Community Water Grant a winner for Greening Australia. reening Australia have been successful in winning a grant for $37,852 from the Federal Governments, Community Water Grant program.

The funding will directly benefit the Onkaparinga Catchment with project work to be undertaken along Pedler Creek and within the Gemtree Wetlands.

“Community participation is crucial to the success of this project.” Says, Greening Au stralia’s All ys Richardson.

“Our aim is for volunteers to be directly involved in this environmental restoration project, engaging the local community in the improvement of the health of the Pedler Creek Catchment.” Ms Richardson said.

Greening Australia will be commencing the project in early 2007. On-ground works include the removal of rubbish and debris such as scrap metal. Large weeds including willows will be removed.

“They are currently clogging the creek line and preventing native

vegetation establishment.” Ms Richardson said.

Erosion control will be undertaken including the trail of the use native riparian plant species. Revegetation will also be a focus with over 5,000 native plant species to be planted.

“Best practice techniques will be used. Once rehabilitated, the creek and wetland will provide clean water and support an ecosystem containing many endemic frog species.” Ms Richardson said.

Anticipated results are not just aesthetic. “A healthy creek will improve water filtration, stabilise erosion, prevent weed growth and improve water quality.” Ms Richardson said.

Community Tree planting activity days are currently being confirmed for 2007.

Greening Australia is the country’s largest not-for-profit environmental organisation. It tackles critical issues like salinity, declining water quality, soil degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss in a practical and scientific way.

Caring for animals during dry times

his season continues to be one of the driest on record across South Australia. With minimal pasture remaining on many Adelaide Hills properties, it is important to properly care for animals to maintain their health and productivity.

At this stage, it is vital to make long-term plans. Assess your farm’s feed and water situation, and consider the capabilities of your land - if you cannot adequately maintain your animals’ condition, you need to consider de-stocking. It is vital to do your sums, and plan for the season ahead before the break.

Water supply The quantity and quality of water available is the most important factor contributing to animal welfare and production – they will not survive without an adequate supply of water that is clean, clear, odour-free and low in mineral content (such as salts, magnesium, calcium). Check water for algal growth, and clean troughs or treat dams accordingly. Ensure that watering po ints are easily

accessible and close to animals.

Supplementary feeding Although grain and hay is expensive and hard to source, supplementary feeding can be economically viable. However, this measure during the dry is generally for maintenance only – don’t try to fatten and finish at this stage, just get the right weight balance.

Animals needing additional supplementary feed are those that will be mated, or that are pregnant or lactating. Introduce supplementary feed slowly and observe animals daily.

Supplementary feed must be good quality, clean, and free of dust and mould. Cows with calves at foot in late summer/autumn will need twice as much hay as dry cows, and the hay must be high-quality.

Continue to monitor the condition of your animals – those losing condition should be fed appropriately.

Land management It is important to maintain about 70 per cent ground cover to help

protect pasture and soils. If ground cover is diminishing, you may need to consider confinement feeding which involves placing animals in a confined area as part of an intensive feed regime to maintain their condition. This also keeps animals off of the wider paddocks which helps reduce damage from continued grazing, soil erosion, and weed spread from contaminated purchased fodder.

Vaccination and drenching These programs are still important during the dry, and should be managed as normal.

Department of Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA) is organising ‘coping with the season’ workshops to be held across South Australia, including the Adelaide Hills, in the new year. The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board will be hold a free Drought Decision Time field day on Tuesday, 23 January from 9.30am at Victor Harbor. Publications are also available to help you manage your animals – they are “Feeding and

Managing Sheep in Dry Times” which costs $20, and “Feeding Beef Cattle” which costs $15, available from the Roseworthy Information Centre (freecall 1800 356 446).

hope everyone has enjoyed their Christmas and the New Year celebrations are successful. All the best to everyone for a safe and happy one.

A few of our members have been active since our last newsletter Bella Christine and Kat went to a jumping day at Kangarilla. There was no placing but the girls had a great day as they had a freshman's going as well. Denise was busy but was kind enough to allow Brian to drive the truck and take the girls and their horses.

Ryan took Kirby Park Irish Joker to the Metro Derby Weekend and came in 3rd in the 80cm.

They also went to Camperdown in Victoria and came in 33rd out of 50 at pre-novice, which is two levels higher than their usual. Ryan is very pleased with their progress.

Libby, a regular at Southern Vales Dressage Club took out the club championship at novice level on 'The Dark Side'.

The highlight of the month would have been our clubs Christmas Gymkana. We had an incredible turnout of members present and the day went off beautifully. Trophies went to Jeri Kroll and Petros in the adult section and Carly Wenham on Cerise in the juniors. Tiny tots

were a tie with Marlee Temple and Laura Dobson.

The fancy Dress was a highlight with Marlee as Dorothy and Peanuts as the lion with the tin man and scarecrow on board, equal first place with Laura the Christmas Tree with Pocket as a present. Carol and Coco were 2nd wi t h t h e l a t e r a l t h i n k i n g ClothesHorse. Andrew was third with Dancing with the stars.

Congratulations to all members.

Thank you list is huge. Our special guest judges - Wendy Hunt and Allan Thornton did a fantastic job.

Libby and Ryan excelled with total organisation. Sally, Jess, Linda and Sean were there the day before to help the setting up. The girls set up the big green shed in festive fair.

Denise judged the Jumping with Deb on the clock and Kathy crash crew. Nicole and Jen did the computer work and Sean checked all the scores. Ryan and Yvonne were out all morning assisting the judges. Sally, Yvonne, Sean, Jeri all helped out with the novelties.

Sean actually spotted running along side a younger member, helping her along. Great job pres. Libby seemed to be absolute ly everywhere all the time. Well done Lib! All members did well to

remember their salad or sweets.

Brian Thorpe and Bob Button did the roasts for the special $2 Christmas lunch. Deb and Jill helped set the lunch.

Our January Rally will be a 4 day event with camping and many activities. Will give you full run down of how it went, as this will be to print later.

February Rally - will be the first weekend which falls on the 3rd and 4th. We have a huge number of Mountain Pony Club members wishing to have our famous beach ride. This will need to happen over two days due to the number

coming. More details will come to members over the camp period as finer details need to be attended.

March rally - due to Annual Sheep Dog trials it will be held the following Sunday, which is 11th.

any insecticides that are applied to the dog have limited effectiveness against fleas because they are only effective for a few hours after application. Also, most of these products are effective only against adult fleas. Flea powders and shampoos will kill the fleas present on your dog or cat at the time of application. However, most of these products have little or no residual effects, so the fleas that return to your animal from the environment are not affected. Thus, your pet may be covered with fleas within a day after having a flea bath or being powdered. Animals with sensitive skins may be irritated by flea collars and these are not recommended. Cats may also get their front leg or lower jaw through the flea collar and receive chemical burns to their armpit or mouth.

There are some newer, more effective treatments that are a valuable part of the treatment plan.

They kill adult fleas rapidly and some can be used daily, if necessary. Flea sprays or spot on

treatments containing insect growth regulators are helpful in managing the overall problem because they help to break the flea life cycle.

Always read the label when using any new flea product on a dog or cat. More sophisticated products have become available that not only have a high knockdown effect i.e. killing adult fleas on the animal, but also have long residual effects.

Some require repeat applications only every several weeks. Tablet spot on and pour on preparations are all available today. Please discuss the problem with us and we will advise what is best for your situation. There is a canine heartworm product that is given once monthly and also has an effect on fleas, but it does not kill adult fleas. Instead, it renders the female fleas infertile. This means that you will not see visible results for 1 - 4 months, depending on the number of fleas present. Since fleas live all the year round in our warm centrally heated houses, it is important that the product is used regularly. Control of the entire flea population is then possible especially when combined with one of the environmental products to

kill adult fleas. One of the advantages of the product is that it appears to be particularly non-toxic, both to our pets and ourselves.

When a pet is heavily infested with fleas, it is easy to find them. If the numbers are small, it is best to quickly turn your pet over and look on its belly for fleas crawling away from the light. If you do not find them there, look on the back just in front of the tail. Be sure to part the hair and look at the skin for "flea dirt". Flea dirt is faecal matter from the flea that contains digested blood. Finding flea dirt is a sure indication that fleas are present or have been present recently. Flea dirt looks like black pepper. If you are in doubt of its identification, put the suspected material on a tissue. Add one or two drops of water, and wait about 30 seconds. If it is flea dirt, a reddish brown stain will appear. If you just got your pet home from boarding and it has fleas this does not necessarily mean that they were picked up while boarding. The preemerged adult fleas can survive up to 140 days within the cocoon. This is significant when your pets are gone from home for extended periods of time. During the time that the house is quiet and empty, pre-emerged admits remain in their cocoon. Even if the house was treated with an insecticide, their cocoon protects them. When people and pets return to the house, adults emerge from their cocoons and immediately begin to seek a blood meal. They jump on dogs, cats, and

even people. Although it may appear that a pet just returned from boarding brought fleas to your home, it is also very possible that a sudden emergence of adult fleas may account for the fleas present.

Community Builders Program for the Fleurieu

M

ilang Old School House Community Centre [MOSHCC] is hosting the State Government’s Community Builders Program which begins next month.

Have you thought of ways you’d like to improve your community but don’t really know how to go about it? The Fleurieu Community Builders project may just be the opportunity you are looking for!

In 2000 the 5 community builder teams participated in the Fleurieu Community Builders pilot program.

The pilot program drew on experiences and example of communities across Australia and overseas which developed networks and engaged people across the communities in the region to seek from within answers to local and regional issues.

MOSHCC Coordinator Karyn Bradford, who was a member of the Milang Team in 2000, said “When we were seeking the funding, we saw it as our opportunity to give something back to the region. We, as individuals and as a community, have got so much out of participating in Community Builders.” she said.

Karyn went on to say, ‘I can’t recommend the program highly enough to any one who might want to work on particular issues. The program gives an opportunity to review and rethink how to approach something. For us it was about having a community focus and centre’ she said. Karyn went on to say, ‘As with most of the communities involved in the initial program, the establishment of MOSHCC can be directly attributed to the Milang teams involvement in the 2000 Community Builders program’. Kayrn added that Shirley Smith has been appointed as the

Facilitator to the Builders Program.

‘This will be a great asset to the program as Shirley facilitated the initial program and knows the Fleurieu well’ she said.

The outcomes from involvement in the program include input to the planning and development of a wooden boat building school at Goolwa, signage and completion of a foreshore walking trail at Clayton.

In other locations planning and running a successful night market and planning for a community café including internet access have been some of the outcomes.

‘Our success in gaining this funding to host Community Builders in 2007 is a fantastic opportunity for other individuals and communities to explore their l e a d e r s h i p q u a l i t i e s wh i l e undertaking a current community and economic development project’ Karyn said. ‘We already have teams entered from Yankalilla, Mt Compass, Strathalbyn Residents Group and Port Elliot. Others teams will be developed in Milang, Clayton and Eastern Fleurieu School. Negotiations are also being held with other locations including Victor Harbor and Kangaroo Island’ she said.

ongratulations to the winning team for their success in the Southern Area Readers Cup competition. This competition is run against schools from the Southern Area of Adelaide from Blackwood South, including independent and state schools. The students read seven books and watch one movie. They then have to answer a series of questions in heats.

The YAS team took the lead early in the finals and held on to take out the cup. The team was ably coached by Mrs Joshua.

The cup is on display in the library.

THE EKG n Oct. 19th and 20th Ms Kilgour’s year 4/5 class held a camp in the Edible Kitchen Garden situated in the agricultural area of the school.

The children have spent time there every week planning, planting, tending and harvesting produce to use in cooking lessons with Colleen McCleod.

D

amien Clark, year 12 student at Yankalilla Area School has won an Australian Vocational Student Prize in 2006. Damien is one of only six students across the state to win this prestigious award.

Damien has been in a school based traineeship – Certificate 2 i n H o s p i ta li t y ( K it c h en Operations) since December 05.

His host employer is Lilla’s Café at Yankalilla, managed by Colleen McLeod. Colleen has a driving passion for the hospitality industry and has identified Damien as someone who has the skills, personality and drive that could take him to the top of his field. To achieve his competencies Damien attends TAFE at Noarlunga Campus one day per week.

Damien has also successfully completed his year 12 studies this year.

As a trainee he has been an ideal student, he is polite, respectful and attends TAFE with regularity and reliability.

The Edible Kitchen Garden Yankalilla Area School he Edible Kitchen Garden was initiated by Colleen McLeod from Lilla’s and Rosie Watkin’s, Yankalilla Area School’s Agriculture teacher.

What is an edible kitchen garden? “An edible kitchen garden is a garden created to provide edible, aromatic and beautiful resources for a kitchen,” explains Stephanie Alexander.

And that is just what classes from YAS have done this semester. They have planned, constructed, dug, planted, tended and harvested garden produce with Rosie, which they have used to create culinary delights in the YAS kitchen with Colleen.

Ms Kilour’s Yr 4/5 class held a tent camp in the garden on October 19th and 20th to immerse and engage students fully in the project. They have followed up with weekly lessons in the garden. The purpose of a garden learning program is to: • Connect students to the earth, nature and to each other.

• Offer children experiences in growing, harvesting and preparing fresh garden produce and sharing at table with others.

• Link garden learning to the whole curriculum and engages learners in literacy, numeracy and all learning areas in new and exciting ways.

• Develop awareness of the school garden ecology as part of the wider environment beyond the school fence.

• Involve families, the wider community and cultures.

• Offer alternative food choices that support optimal health.

FINNISS ELECTORATE SECURES SENIORS GRANTS

lder people living in the Finniss Electorate are set to benefit from more equipment and improved facilities by securing State Government Grants for Seniors totalling more than $8,800. The Member for Finniss, Michael Pengilly said that $8,884 had been granted to ten clubs and organisations which are mainly run by volunteers. The Grants for Seniors Program provides small, one-off grants which enables organisations to buy equipment or improve their facilities to help older people maintain their independence and continue to participate in the community. A

s foreshadowed in my council election campaign, I addressed the matter of the commitment of “$4m” dollars for upgrading of the Council Chambers.

I was successful in having a motion of rescission passed at the December meeting.

This means the project is now on hold and will be totally reviewed.

To start with, a comprehensive district-wide information exercise will take place, giving rate payers option, costing and other information on alternative sites and models.

This is the chance for effective consultation to occur. Of the necessity, to protect the funds already laid out, the exercise whilst not being rushed, will take place over the next couple of months with a view to decisions being made by end of March or early April.

I urge all rate payers to take part in resolving this significant question, please contact me if I can be of help.

ecent concern about the Council commitment to build new office facilities and the reactions and interaction that has taken place has prompted me to offer this article as a contribution to our collective thinking. I would like to develop three trains of thought each one may be more or less controversial.

No one need become emotional about what I have to say and I state from the start that I do not have any insight into what we should do. So I offer the following with an open mind.

From this he was able to branch out to the work orders issued for the use of labor, materials, equipment, etc.

From there he could drill down to the estimates, budgets, records of meetings and any other information relating to the work in hand. This was before we had note book computers, the internet, and wireless connection and at that time big mainframes were housed in air conditioned temples presided over by all powerful managers. I had no idea how quickly it would all change.

We have now gone way beyond my vision of the future. About fifteen years ago I was briefly involved with a computer company where they were working on a small computer that could connect to the telephone system using an internal wireless modem.

Again this was before I had come across the internet.

The person kept on about convergent technology. I knew the concept and now I had a phrase to apply to it. On a recent tour of Malaysia I sat in Starbucks in Kuala Lumpa (the only place we could find a good drink of coffee). On the table next to us sat two deaf mutes waving their arms about and making obvious laughing sounds.

They were having such a good time. Where they watching a DVD? No they were in communication with a number of other deaf people in all parts of the world. I went and sat with them and saw that the screen was paneled with smiling faces and the waving of hands was their sign language. he Christmas Party was another highly successful evening with a traditional Christmas dinner, Complimentary drinks and nibbles to begin with, live music and carol singing. Father Christmas arrived as Jingle Bells was sung, most enthusiastically by the children.

By the time this goes to print the New Year’s Eve event will have carried us into 2007.

The Committee is working towards producing a calendar of events and it is hoped that copies will be available early in the New Year. At this stage the big events coming up in the early part of the year are the Family Day at Easter and the Leafy Sea-dragon Festival in April which will see the facilities of the Club used for an art exhibition during the week of the Festival and a special seafood dinner on the second Saturday with live entertainment by Bernie and his wife and Johnnie Mack. A quilt made for the Festival by the women of the craft group at the Cape will also be on display.

In the meantime the Club will be open as usual on Thursday evenings for snacks and Saturdays for dinner.

ith all Christmas and New Year celebrations now behind us it’s time to resume pennants (13th Jan), with both red teams well up in the competition, however the white team appears to be struggling. Night Owls also returns on 16th January. The organisation of this competition is running very smoothly with Lou Whittlesea, Anna Richards and Roxanne Chapman at the helm.

Friday night fortnightly teas recommence on Friday January 12th and then Friday 26th followed in February on the 9th and 23rd and again 9th and 23rd march - visitors and holiday makers welcome.

Don’t forget our club is right behind the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival in April and of course our bowling club now has the Leafy Sea Dragon emblem on our shirts (both men and women) sponsored by club member Gary Fox.

Amy Patricia Hamlyn - Known as Pat to all Born to Frederick and Myra Maidment in Adelaide on the 19/4/1933.

Peacefully passed away on the 9/12/06 in her home at Normanville.

Wife to the late John Hamlyn and mother to Trevor and Peter Hamlyn Mother-in-law of Gwen and Janet.

Grandmother to Sonia, David, Kym, Rachel, Shaisee, Dwayne and Melissa Great-Grandmother to Callen, Matilda, Grace, Josh and William.

Pat spent most of her years with her family on the farm at Hay Flat. She milked cows and did a lot of farm work with help from the family. She had many stories while living on the farm that were shared at her funeral which was held at the

Pat was a great community person, she was involved with the uniting church, palliative care team for several years, she was on the Yankalilla show committee and she continually arranged flowers and made cakes for community stalls that were held.

Pat travelled with world and lived to tell all her stories. She went to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Europe and England, New Zealand, China, Canada and America, Africa, Nepal, Norfolk Island, Tasmania and Kangaroo Island. Along with all her travelling overseas she has also seen a lot of Australia.

On behalf of the Hamlyn family we would publicly like to thank the extended community

for their great support during Pat’s illness. We would like to thank you all for the flowers, phone calls, cards, personal visits and expressions.

She will be dearly missed by her family and the extended community.
