e had a lovely year of dancing last year and are all looking forward to resuming in February. We had a lovely break-up evening joined by quite a few of our dancing friends from all around Adelaide. We enjoyed an evening of dancing followed by a pooled supper. We resume dancing on Thursday February 2nd at 7.30 p.m. in the A.O.G. Hall in Yankalilla. We had our annual Christmas dinner in February this year at the Normanville Hotel and it was a very nice meal.

i everyone!

Happy New Year! We survived another one.

Well done to the New Years Eve Pageant organisers for yet another spectacular event. Interstate visitors have commented on what a great event it was, especially for a ‘small town’ like Normanville.

The matter of the Yankalilla Dump is on the Council agenda for next meeting. Will it, or won’t it be closing? If so, then what is ‘plan B’ going to involve?

For the first time in many, many years there is no Vac Swim program at Normanville Beach.

Over eighty families were intending to make use of the regular summer safety educational activity, but they had their plans ‘sunk’ when local coordinators were not to be found. What a shame for the children and families who look forward to joining in each year. The closest Vac Swim to Normanville is Victor Harbor (indoors), Pt Elliot (by the Pt Elliot SLSC) and Aldinga (Aldinga SLSC). Could this situation be a result of the transfer of Vac Swim instructors who were patrolling members of Normanville SLSC across the peninsula to Pt Elliot SLSC or just leaving the Association altogether?

There have been a number of bushfires and a business premises damaged in the area and we can thank our local CFS/SES volunteers for keeping them all under control.

The new Sealink passenger terminal is now completed and open. Looking good!

Leonards Mill is once again trading, under new/old owners Julie & Peter Barlow. We will see how things go with the latest chapter in the historic building’s never ending story.

Jacobs Creek Tour Down Under is now on, unless you picked this up late, so get out there and be part of the spectacle. This year Yankalilla has the ‘finish line’ instead of just a ride-through.

The latest Sk8 competition was a success again and hopefully there will be many more.

Three local fire fighters at Bathurst 1000 and Classic Adelaide Rally.

hree members of the Yankalilla CFS, Roger King, Christine Wenham and Mike Ranger (pictured) have recently been quite actively involved with motor sport. All three were volunteer Fire marshals at the Bathurst 1000 race, at Mt Panorama in October. That involved plenty of excitement as Wenham worked in the pit lane, King worked trackside and pit lane and Ranger worked trackside and in the Fire chase truck.

The three also worked as volunteers at the Classic Adelaide Rally. Their job at the rally was, once again as fire marshals, riding in the first intervention vehicles.

These vehicles contain a paramedic, a critical care nurse and two fire fighters and are responsible for emergency response to incidents in the special stages.

Ranger also worked at the Surfers Paradise circuit for the Indy car carnival. His job there for the 4 days, was on the 'fire chase truck', which chases the start of each race up to turn 4, in case of incidents during the start.

All three enjoy the opportunity to put their fire fighting expertise to further use.

MURRAY MOUTH DREDGING SUSPENDED

I

mproved conditions at the Murray Mouth mean that for the first time in three years dredging operations will be suspended in a bonus for the Coorong and holidaymakers.

Dredging of the Murray mouth will be suspended for 10 days ove r Ch ri st ma s t o all ow holidaymakers to use the area without restriction. Announcing the move, Minister for the River Murray, Karlene Maywald, said the move comes as the health of the River slowly improves. "The dredging program is showing good results with the improved condition at the mouth being maintained over several months and there are signs that tidal movements in the Coorong are the best for the last three years," Minister Maywald said. Earlier this year the exclusion zone around the dredges was reduced to allow greater access for boaties.

Access was initially restricted as a safety precaution in October 2002, when dredging operations began.

"We recognise the Lower Lakes and the Coorong are key recreational, fishing and tourism regions and we're mindful of increased activity in the area during this time," the Minister said. Sand dredging operations recently completed the dredging of a channel from the Coorong to the Murray Mouth. "The opening of this channel has provided for greater tidal variation along the Coorong. For example, at Tauwitchere Barrage there is currently 40cm variation in the daily tides. "The range of tidal movement south of the Murray Mouth is now greater than at any time over the past four years and this has significantly extended the area of mud flat habitat for migratory waders that visit the Coorong during summer. "Over

the past few months more than 600 GL has been released through the barrages and fishways. This flow, combined with the opening of the channel, has allowed fresh water to extend further down the southern lagoon of the Coorong providing salinity benefits in that area. “Since July this year, water has been continually released t h r ou g h t h e f i s h wa ys a t Tauwitchere and Goolwa Barrages and recent monitoring showed large numbers of small bodied fish migrating upstream," Minister Maywald said. NORMANVILLE COMMUNITY SOCIAL CLUB INC.

W

e have had a busy couple of months, some of our members went to see “I used to wear that 2” at the Noarlunga Theatre. The report about it was very good, 'their best yet' was one comment. Singing dancing and fashions over the years. The dinner before the Theatre at the Port Noarlunga Hotel was also very nice.

We had our annual Christmas Party on the last Sunday in November. This is always a success with Father Christmas coming to give presents to the children. The pooled lunch was very tasty and lots of varied salads and sweets. The children played games, pass the parcel and apple bobbing among them. Then we drew the Christmas Raffle, always a popular event, the prizes were donated by various local businesses and the main prize donated by Sealink. Many thanks to everyone who donated a prize and also to everyone who bought a ticket.

In December we went to the Normanville Hotel for our annual Christmas dinner. This was very nice and everyone enjoyed the evening. A bit different this

year as we usually have it on our own not in a restaurant, but we have run out of venues that we can do this.

Our next venture is the Annual Trash and Treasure Market. The sites are going very well this year, so it should be a good day.

Changing the date this year it seems was a very good move. More on that next issue.

We are holding our 1st Beetle drive of the year on Sunday February 19th in the R.S.L. Hall. We will have a pooled lunch at 12.00 noon followed by Beetle at 2 p.m. and then pooled afternoon tea. Members and visitors alike are welcome no need to book just turn up. If you just want to come for the Beetle and afternoon tea that’s O.K. the cost is $2.00 for everyone.

In March we think that the Noarlunga Theatre will be having it’s next production. If it is, we hope to book some seats for a performance. It’s an Agatha Christie murder mystery. Look for details of this event on our notice board.

NEW $2 MILLION CAPE JERVIS FERRY PASSENGER TERMINAL

K

angaroo Island Sealink’s new $2 million passenger terminal officially opened at Cape Jervis in December and is expected to act as a major catalyst for tourism growth on Kangaroo Island and the southern Fleurieu Peninsula.

Now open to the public, the 300 square metre terminal includes a reception and check-in area, visitor information services, indoor seating for up to 100 people, toilets and souvenir sales.

It was officially opened by the South Australian Tourism Minister, Dr Jane Lomax-Smith and Transport Minister, Mr Patrick Conlon.

Sealink’s Chief Executive, Mr Jeff Ellison, said Kangaroo Island was one of the jewels in South Australia’s tourism crown and a major destination for thousands of international, interstate and local tourists each year.

SK8: Skate Competition

A

fter a day of fearing it would be a wash out, the skate competition was a huge success on Tuesday 27th December 2005 with a crowd of 300 people.

Competition was fierce with a number of skaters coming in to town especially for the comp. The team from Goliath showed their prowess with a long and impressive skate demonstration.

Budding and experienced skaters demonstrated their skill to the tunes of DJ Shep from Da Klinic. Onlookers could take a spell from the competition and have a go on the Velcro Wall or get into some graffiti brush work on the art wall. The littlies were all transformed by a face painter into butterflies and batman.

n Thursday 15th December, our Centre celebrated the end of another year with song, dance, entertainment, party food and a special visit from Father Christmas. The Centre was filled with excited children, staff and families who were all keen to share in all the fun that this festive time of the year can bring. NORMANVILLE BUSH WALKERS

O

ur last walk for the season was the annual Gourmet Walk, and was held on Sunday the 20th November. A large group met at the Wine & Information Centre at McLaren Vale where there was wine tasting and time to look over the Centre. We then drove to Chapel Hill where we had pre-lunch nibbles, organised by Katrina and Rob Smith. Due to the Classic Car Rally, our planned walk went slightly astray. We weren’t able to cross the road into Hardy’s Scrub as planned, but had to remain walking on the north side of the road in the Onkaparinga Gorge Park. We stopped for lunch, accompanied by wine and sweets arranged by Maureen Stone. After lunch we were rewarded by seeing many of the classic cars coming through in an unrestricted speed zone. We rounded the day off with afternoon tea at Woodstock Winery. Everyone agreed that it was a good way to finish our last walk for the year. Our break up lunch was enjoyed by 24 people at Andy Mitchell’s property out from Yankalilla on Sunday 11th. It was very hot, and the barbecue went down well with a few Aussie salutes to accompany it! Thank you to Maureen and Andy for a very enjoyable day. Our next get together will be in February 2006, at which we will plan the 2006 programme. Date to be notified. YANKALILLA MEN'S PROBUS CLUB

A

t the December meeting of the Club, Vice-President Barry Oats presented an O.B.E. certificate to our highly esteemed member Geoff Heath. Past President Geoff is still a very active member of the Club and currently serves on the Management Committee organising outings, club visits and social activities. Members congratulated Geoff and wished him a very happy birthday. Our speaker was one of our own members David Evans, who spoke about the many years he worked as a teacher at Regency Park Centre School for Physically Disabled Children. The centre existed as a partnership between the Crippled Children's Association and the Education Dept. He expressed his gratitude to Australia for providing an environment where he could develop and exercise a number of unique professional skills. David spoke about a group of adolescent boys with muscular dystrophy for whom he developed a programme that concentrated on activities that they felt weren't wasting their precious time. He described the condition, the fact that most sufferers die between the ages of 16 and 21 years and the effect on the emotions and attitudes of the boys and young men as they experience their bodies collapsing around them. He then described the time he spent as a driver education teacher. Every year G.M.H provided a new car for the programme that was adapted for the disabled and was insured and maintained by them. Any disabled student who could provide a medical certificate and who was capable of learning the road rules was eligible. He completed his talk by introducing us to electric wheelchair sports, little known team games developed for people in electric wheelchairs, who have neuro - muscular diseases The games are balloon soccer, wheelchair hockey and wheelchair touch rugby. The states take turns in hosting annually the National Electric Wheelchair Sports; the competition is fierce and the players committed. Finally he showed a short video that was made to promote balloon soccer in it's early years.

ur Christmas Lunch at our rooms on the 7th December was a great success. Fourteen of our members were able to attend plus a very welcome visitor, Mrs. Lyn Trigg whom we hope may become a new member. Every member contributed to the lunch, some with food, some with donations of money some with expertise in decorating and setting up the room which looked very festive. The food was delicious. Roast Turkey with a mouth-watering choice of salads followed by Christmas pudding and Mince Pies. Wine Sauce or Brandy Custard came with the pudding, or, you could choose cream. (Most of us chose all three)! We also had a choice of wine or a soft drink or Adam's Ale, plus various sweet and savoury nibbles.

Lunch was followed by Christmas carols and the singing was accompanied

by Heather Pile on our little electric organ. Despite the festivities we still had to have a short business meeting to clear up any outstanding business before the holidays. Maureen Stone showed everyone the beautiful silver Cundell Cup that our Handicraft ladies won at the competition in October.

It now has our Branch name engraved on it for the first time. We held a Devonshire Tea Stall at the Classic Car Rally and made a good profit so we hope to do the same at the Tour Down on the 20th January. Most of our fund raising goes to the upkeep of our rooms but we have been able to donate $100 to the C.W.A. State Emergency Fund for Flood Relief and $60 was donated by members for the C.W.A. State Objective which this year is for the Upgrade of S.A.C.W.A Property at Kent Town. Members also donated $21.70 to 'Pennies for Friendship' and goes to projects run by Associated Country Women of the World. Their new project is for a Dispensary for SoSo Village in Fiji. We would like to wish everyone a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year. Our next meeting will be on the 1st February 2006. Please bring along your ideas for our 70th Birthday next November, and the next Handicraft meeting will be on the 25th January.

$2M ‘make-over’ to keep all CFS volunteers safer on the job

A

ll of South Australia’s Co u n tr y F ir e S e r vi c e volunteers will be outfitted with the latest Personal Protective Equipment this year, at a cost of almost $2 million dollars. The Rann Government has approved an additional $1,495,000 from the Community Emergency Services Fund to meet the cost. The remainder is made up by $455,000 of uncommitted CFS funds.

The upgrade follows a CFS audit that estimates 1,500 CFS volunteers are currently using outdated or ‘older style’ clothing.

“This means all 10,500 volunteers will be outfitted with the latest protective clothing”, says Premier Mike Rann.

“Our CFS volunteers demonstrate a remarkable commitment, 24 hours a day/365 days a year, helping the community and this government is equally committed to ensuring they’re properly resourced.”

This upgrade will provide: • Proban Wildland Fire Fighter Personal Protective Clothing for 1,574 fire fighters at a cost of $394,000 by the end of February.

• PBI Gold Personal Protective Clothing for 1,230 fire fighters, suited to structural fire fighting, at a cost of $1,556 million, by the end of June.

CFS Chief Officer, Euan Ferguson, says up-to-date clothing will maximise the personal safety of fire fighters.

“Over recent fire seasons we’ve had 4 fire fighters suffer burns to the neck, ears or face, because they were wearing ‘older style’

protective clothing when caught in extreme radiant heat situations.

“This update sends a message that the State Government, the CFS and the fire industry are serious about safety.”

The Premier’s announcement came at Adelaide Airport where two of the latest additions to the State’s fire fighting fleet officially came on line today.

The $3.5 million Augusta A119 heli tankers, also know as ‘Koalas’, have already proved their worth.

David Cant, CFS Manager of Aviation Services, says “On the 23rd December they were used, along with our fixed wing fire bombers, on bushfires near Nairne and on the outskirts of Murray Bridge.”

“In the Murray Bridge fire, an aircraft was actually being used for air attack supervision when the fire started to encroach on houses.

“The heli tanker converted to a firebombing role and is credited with stopping the fire at the back fence of a number of properties.

“This demonstrates the flexibility in the multi-function role of the aircraft.

“As part of the funding arrangement with the National Aerial Fire fighting Centre we were able to bring the aircraft online ahead of the contract for short periods,’ says Mr Cant.

The ‘Koalas’ have also showed off their impressive firebombing power last month at the official opening of the new $200,000 Mt Crawford Airstrip.

Have a 120 litre fire suppressing capability.

Are safe to operate near houses due to their slower speed and accuracy.

The State and Federal Government’s have equally split the contract cost of $293,000 for each aircraft over the three-month operating period. The additional operating expense of $1,000 per hour is met by the Rann Government.

This is just part of the State Government’s $2.4 million dollar commitment to boost aerial fire

fighting resources, but Premier Rann says its vital the community also remains vigilant.

“We’ve already had a tense start to the bushfire season, with dozens of fires across the state - surely that’s a wakeup call for property owners in high risk areas such as the Adelaide Hills,’ says the Premier.

“I’m extremely fearful that the worst is yet to come and I have no patience for any property owners who aren’t properly prepared by now.

“I’m told the city of Mitcham alone has issued 38 $160 fines to property owners who failed to clear their land after being put on notice - that’s 38 too many.”

“Cleaning gutters, clearing yards of debris and having a bushfire plan are simple things everyone can do to help make the job of our CFS volunteers easier and safer.”

fter missing the last edition of the Yankalilla News I can assure you our Club has been very busy. We have inducted a new member, Steve Cossey of Inman Valley. The annual Xmas Dinner was held at the Normanville Hotel on December 5. As usual congratulations must go to management for the excellent meal. The bi-annual Quilt Display and Auction was once again successfully held under the leadership of Lion Nigel Pile with some $15,000+ raised for various charities etc. October 22nd was the date of our 4 Wheel Drive Tour of our district and in excess of $600 was raised. The Classic Car Rally held on November 18th gave us the opportunity to assist with food supply. The Yankalilla Lions Club manned the gates for the Football finals at the various ovals and received $1,300 from the Football Club and has committed the Club for future years. I might mention we have been doing this for 10+ years and thanks must go to the members who spend the hours in various weather conditions and venues. Lion Rob Williamson has advised me the listed Sheep Dog Trials shown in the Lions Calender to be held on March 11th are actually on March 5-6' 2006. (I understand the sheep have registered R.D.O. on the 11th) The Club is pleased to announce local Youth of the Year dinner and judging will be held at the Sporting Club on February 20th 2006. On January 2nd we are hosting the 6 State finalists for 2005 on a tour of the District as part of their winning 35-day tour of Australia.

The annual Rodeo at the Showgrounds is again to be held on January 14th so be there! Remember our Motto "WE SERVE"

Santa made an appearance and gave out goodies to the children and there were free rides and amusements, free fairy floss and a farmyard nursery. Parri Estate Opens New Wine Tourism Centre

F

amily owned premium wine producer Parri Estate has recently opened a modern new wine tasting and administration centre on its original vineyards south of Mt Compass.

The innovatively designed and attractive new building showcases spectacular views and is located just off the Victor Harbor Road opposite the Alexandrina Cheese Company.

A strong focus will be placed on eco-tourism and families at the site as well as wine tasting, merchandise and other regional produce.

Manager Jo Thompson says that the facility is one of the first of its type in the southern areas of the Fleurieu Peninsula… “Wine tourism is still developing in this region and we hope to

provide people with an enjoyable experience whilst also promoting our wines”.

Owners Alice, Peter and John Phillips originally established the 82 acre vineyard at Mt Compass in 1998 and last year purchased a smaller property on Ingoldby Road, McLaren Vale where a cellar door has also been established.

The business has commenced exporting to a number of countries.

Parri Estate produces a range of premium wines including Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, ViognierChardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

here is nothing I like more than a drop of good red, so when Julie Brocksopp brought in a bottle of her ‘Brocks View Estate 2003 Southern Fleurieu Shiraz”, I was certainly keen to give it the taste test.

Brocks View Estate is 270m above sea level with a cool maritime climate and this vintage was grown using Scott Henry trellising and organic principles, producing a low yield and small berries. The shiraz was created using traditional techniques, hand picked, open fermented and basket pressed then matured in French and American oak for fifteen months.

The wine itself is full bodied and deep in colour. Good fruit and spice aromas and long on the palette this would go well with a good steak or a barbeque. At $22 from the Normanville Hotel bottle shop it would suit those who like a nice heavy red.

Joseph and I thoroughly enjoyed it one evening whilst working on this issue.

Min’s Chinese delights

he fab four - Annie, Robyn, Joseph and T Paul - were at is again on January 5th with a ‘road test’ of Min Palace Chinese & Thai

Restaurant at Normanville. This time we were not alone! Being a family favourite, we were accompanied by family and friends, at their insistence!

We were met by the divine Emma and proprietor/chef Min Hong Lu, who had a banquet treat already planned for us. The eleven of us were seated at the main centre table with fresh red and white linen, which was a pity to mess up, but as with all Chinese restaurants, mess is inevitable when using Trafford Hill Wine

chopsticks, forks or spoons!

We were served our drinks of choice and prawn crackers while we arranged our selection for the 10 course “Ming’s Banquet” at a very reasonable price of $21.80 per person.

For starters we were given a very nice spring roll with red dipping sauce, followed by a choice of the delicious chicken or beef satays in peanut sauce, then soup of the day of which there were many choices but we settled on the crab & sweet corn, except Paul who had the ‘damn hot’ No.1 from the Thai menu - Tom Yum Chicken with fresh chilli and lemon grass - which was lip numbingly delicious!

Four main dishes were then brought out and these were Seafood combination with garlic sauce - “to die for” according to Annie - Sweet & Sour Pork, Chicken stir fried with Chinese vegies & oyster sauce and Steak stir fried with vegies & ginger. All of which were superb and were accompanied by a serve each of special fried rice and steamed rice. To finish off this amazing bombardment of delicious flavours we had a simple desert of honey banana fritters & ice cream (Robyn & Paul), lychees & ice cream (Joseph) and pineapple fritter & ice cream (Annie) from the twelve possible choices of ice cream desserts.

To compliment the meal we chose the Trafford Hill sparkling shiraz - named Isabella - which is priced at $6.50 per glass or $25.90 for the bottle. A particularly good wine which was enjoyed by even the non-wine drinking members of the team.

So if you don’t want the usual pub or café fare you will always have a good meal with great service at a very reasonable price at Min Palace. If some of your group are not into the Chinese food, the menu also has a selection of ‘Australian’ dishes to choose from. There are two banquet options on the menu or each dish can be ordered individually. Min also has an excellent take-away service for those who prefer a goodnight in without the dishes.

Thank you to waitresses Emma and Bronwyn, and congratulations to Min and his wife Chin on the fantastic creations from the kitchen.

We had a wonderful time and would definitely go again.

ith Season 2006 fast approaching, the Senior sides will commence their 2006 campaign with a ‘Meet the Coaches day followed by a ‘light’ training run on Friday 20th January at 6.30 pm at the oval.

Junior (Colts) Committee We are finding it difficult to form a Colts Committee, due to what appears to be nearly total indifference. If this is the case, our Colts will continue to be found wanting, not because the Club Executive Committee do not care, but simply because the few people who are involved have been doing this for many years, and their kids are now grown up. They are also busy people who have busy lives, just like you do, but who continue to donate whatever time they can spare to the general organising of the Club.

The parents of our Colts are the best judges of what their kids require, and this is so important for the future of our Club. The enjoyment the Colts experience, not only from playing sport,

but also from the social interaction with other children and adults, both in their own Club, as well as within the rest of the Association, is surely worth a few hours each week.

We find it hard to believe that there are not 6 or 7 concerned parents who wish to have some say in the direction of their children's’ activity. It cannot be left up to these older members any longer. Be fair, they are your children!!

There is a group of people currently earning funds for the Colts by providing teas on Friday nights. Have you been there yet??

LIBERAL PARTY'S ROAD PHONE-IN RESULTS ON FLEURIEU PENINSULA

T

here was a strong response from the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island to the Liberal Party's phone-in on bad roads.

Local Member of Parliament, Mr Dean Brown, said the public wanted the $50 million allocated to build the tramline from Victoria Square to the casino redirected to our poor roads. Mr Brown said: There is enormous concern with deteriorating local roads, and the potential danger of such roads.

"On the Fleurieu Peninsula the roads highlighted as the worst were: • Yankalilla to Myponga Road (there have been 2 deaths in the past month on this road) • Victor Harbor to Yankalilla Road through Inman Valley.

• The Adelaide to Victor Harbor Road.

• Several local roads in Victor Harbor, including Bay Road.

• The Main South Road to Cape Jervis.

"Several people complained of roadside vegetation blocking the vision at major intersections. The intersection of Mosquito Hill Road and main road to Victor Harbor was one where vegetation blocks the line of sight. Mr Brown said he was following the complaints up with the State Government. He said: "Clearly the people think that the Rann Government has the wrong priorities when spending money. Cut backs in road funding were causing our roads to deteriorate.

Trainers Further to our December, 2005 article, we are still requiring trainers for the senior and junior teams.

We are not able to field any team without an accredited trainer/s on duty. This has very serious insurance connotations and if we cannot comply then there is a serious risk of not being able to field that particular team. Our Head Trainer – Andy Mills, cannot be on duty at all 6 games each Saturday.

Player Fees Fees for the 2006 season have been set by the Executive Committee as follows: Senior $95 Mini Colt $20 Senior Colt $30 Modified $15 Junior Colt $25 The increased fees are due to higher insurance premiums, football, equipment & medical supply costs, etc. It is a number of years since these costs have been increased. Last year a shortfall in player fees collected compared to actual costs was approx $6000. The Club can no longer ‘absorb’ this entire shortfall.

W

e are half way through the summer season with the Supercats sitting on top of the table undefeated for the Women’s Competition.

The inform Fiona Wuttke playing well and with great support by Kath Stone and Sue Bartlett they are the team to beat this summer.

Second is the Jaguar’s, only 2 points behind the Supercats. Natasha O’Leary is once again putting in a top season for this young side.

Candice Bryan is back after her broken ankle in the Winter Grand Final and finding form shooting 6 three pointers in her last game.

Third are the Sharks on percentage over the Rebels. Ali Jacka has joined the team this season, and is an asset to this side with her pace. This team needs to get the same team playing every week, which they should do in the New Year.

Rebels are fourth on percentage, with Kerri Fitzgerald holding the team together. This will be their first year in finals if they keep their form going.

The Centurion Tigers are sitting fifth after having to forfeit their last game. This team has been the one to beat over previous seasons and with Georgie Pile joining the team, her height is an advantaged over the over sides.

With the fast paced Cathy Rowlands, I am sure they will be playing finals once again this season.

Meercats have struggled with injury to their key players. Cassie O’Leary has improved this season and with the injured players returning in the New Year, they will once again be a team to be reckoned with.

The Angels are a new team this season, and although they have struggled against the top sides, they nearly won their first match losing by one point in the dying seconds. Some good defence by Paula Rutt and driving from

As of the 5th December, the Demons are on top of the ladder for the Men’s Competition.

Adam Hunt and Micka James are holding the team together and need some support from the other team members to stay on top of the table.

The Centurions, sitting in second position, lost their first match in three seasons to the Demons. With a different side playing this season, Dean Revill is playing some great Basketball at both ends of the court. He has good support from Scott Wenham and they will be the team to beat again this season.

Sitting third are the Warriors who have returned this season with a good group of young talent in their side. Josh Marshall and Rob Wilson are fast and skilful, but need support by their other team members. They have beaten the Demons side, but need to play as a team like they did in this match to beat them again, and play in the Grand Final this season.

Sitting fourth are the Fireballs who have been struggling for players this season, but when everyone plays, they are a good team who push the top sides. Hayden Champion tries hard all game, but they need everyone to play to bet the top sides.

Fifth are the Gym Junkies who are also struggling for players. Jeremy Doyle has returned to play again this season and has good support from Peter Siddal and Stewart Haggan. Again if everyone plays, they can push the top sides to their best.

HE Irish Group at SAGHS has had a very busy and productive year. Members have been grouped together in the Counties that they are researching, and very good results have been achieved by some. Our objectives have always been the sharing of knowledge with others, and so it has proved. The more people researching and sharing, the more information there will be to share. At present we are working on a project, which will cover the history of the early Irish in South Australia, from the beginning of the Colony, until 1885. Pat Roberts of SAGHS and Dymphna Lonergan of SAGHS and Flinders University are working on compiling this history, as the period is very poorly covered at present. In the early days of South Australia, many of the people who were brought here by the authorities to work, were Irish, but, as far as history goes, their story has not been recorded, in fact they have almost been forgotten. We want to rectify this oversight, and ask ALL MEMBERS to help us.

Everyone in South Australia, if they look

back, either had an Irish forbear, or someone in their family married someone from Ireland.

We want to know about these people, and ask members to send in any information they have. If you can contribute brief covering stories, these will be gratefully accepted. We do ask your help in this matter, as, if this history is not written down for following generations, it will just cease to exist. Many Irish left their homeland because of famine in the 1840s and afterwards for political reasons, and they have spread to every country in the world, so that today there are more Irish living outside Ireland than there are in the Emerald Isle. Do not let us forget those who came to South Australia and made it a better place by their coming here. INCLUDE, with your .submission, stories, details of departures. Sellicks/Myponga wind farm update

he Sellicks/Myponga wind farm was granted a Major Development status with Public Environmental Report (PER) and bestowed development approval by the Rann Labor Government in November 2003, ignoring PlanningSA’s recommendation to reject the proposal “the proposed Myponga/Sellicks Hill Wind Farm will have a detrimental effect on the amenity for many people in the community.

Accordingly, it is recommended that the development not proceed.” Section 48E of the SA Development Act 1993 protects government decisions, and all subsequent approved amendments, from being legally challenged.

After a lengthy and controversial Major Development public consultation process (three meetings by Wind Farm Developments, the developer prior to TrustPower) the number of turbines alternated from 40 (August 2001), 70 (October 2001), 34 (June 2002) to the final approval of 20 (July 2002).

Since being handed contentious approval, developer TrustPower has requested and been granted permission by the Government a p po in t ed D e ve lo p me n t As s e s s me n t Commission (DAC) to vary the project three times (18 November 2004, 5 May and 28 June 2005) Variations have not been listed on the DAC’s agenda, so there has never been any opportunity for anyone to question or comment on these amendments, the only public announcement has been notification of what the DAC has approved by the government gazette.

extension for construction of the project, turbine capacity increased from 1.75MW to 2MW (much larger blade size to ensure turbines are even more visible) returning turbines to positions where they were previously removed because of community concerns for visual/ exceeding Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) noise guidelines, replacement of three temporary monitoring towers with two permanent (after assuring the community the monitoring towers were only temporary) overhead transmission line in lieu of undergrounding, changes to the O & M compound, installation of two switching stations buildings on the wind farm site, larger turbine foundations and changes to access roads.

These changes, and the contentious method in which they were accomplished, have infuriated objectors to a wind farm at this site with many questioning what had to happen behind the scenes for this project to be permitted and if the Major Development, Public Environment Report (PER) and subsequent DAC amendments were part of a sinister long term pre-planned deceptive plot carefully orchestrated to deceive.

The million dollar question will always remain: “Why did the Rann Labor Government approve the Sellicks/Myponga wind farm?” Objectors are angry at the lack of vision as Electricity Supply Industry Planning Council (ESIPC) Annual Planning Report June 2005 stated SA has in excess of 3,000MW of wind generation built, issued with generating licence and planned but considers our electricity transmission grid can only safely utilise 500MW, while 800 to 1,000MW 'would raise concerns over impacts on reliability, security and price'.

(These figures are a state average, to my knowledge no Australian studies have been conducted on how much wind energy can be tolerated by any particular grid transmission line, the Fleurieu already has the Cape Jervis Starfish Hill wind generation) Essential Services Commission of South Australia (ESCOSA) has recently imposed conditions on new wind generating licences including the Sellicks/Myponga wind farm.

These conditions were instigated because of their and the National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCO)’s concerns on electricity transmission grid stability and reliability as both have this legal obligation.

ESIPC and NEMMCO’s conclusions contradict claims made in TrustPower’s PER for the issue of wind generation reliability.

Incredibly TrustPower’s PER included reference to “increased reliability of increased local and state power supply” 13 times.

Objectors to this wind farm were disgusted TrustPower was awarded a commendation by the Planning Institute of Australia although the majority of the community consultation was conducted by the original developer, Wind Farm Developments. “The judges said the award recognised a quality impact assessment which was notable for evidence of a comprehensive process to address development issues, as well as the need for good community information to address community concerns.”

The True Friends of the Southern Mt Lofty Ranges wrote to the Planning Minister, Hon Jay Weatherill MP requesting that he instigate proceedings against

TrustPower for providing what it considered nine instances of false and misleading information in their PER (a criminal offence).

New Zealand Power companies (including TrustPower) have been put on notice by the NZ Commerce Commission that they will face court prosecution under the Fair Trading Act if they continue to mislead customers by false and misleading advertising.

Meridian and Trustpower, had previously reached out-of-court settlements to avoid prosecution. (NZ Herald 4 M a r c h 2 0 0 5 ) .

Federal Environment and Heritage minister Senator Ian Campbell has recently written to all State Environment Ministers (November 2005) stating that he is considering assuming control of the siting of wind farms in a bid to reduce community opposition to them and is taking into account a planning code that would protect communities.

Sellicks/Myponga wind farm opponents now feel bitterly cheated because more than two thirds of SA's wind projects can never eventuate and suspect many who supported this project were conned, duped and persuaded into believing ‘we have to do this’. We had to embrace renewable energy, but future generations will decide if we should have been more perceptive.

Barry Webb Myponga Beach Barry has been a long-term opponent, lives approximately one kilometre from and is writing a book (“Ill Wind”) on his Sellicks/Myponga wind farm experiences, alarmed the wind industry may be the swindle of the 21st century.

e had our last meeting of 2005 on December 1st, we had a lovely day in Victor Harbor starting at the Encounter Centre for morning tea and a tour. Next we had a lovely lunch at Urrimbirra where we exchanged small gifts. We ended up at the Whale Centre everyone had a great day.

Our first meeting of 2006 is in St James Church Hall at 9.30 a.m. on Thursday

February 2nd. After a business meeting Emanda Fretwell will come and show us how to decorate boxes, if you keep the box the cost is $8.00. We will have a pooled lunch and in the afternoon we will hold a beetle drive.

RECORD ATTENDANCE TIPPED FOR TOUR DOWN UNDER

remier Mike Rann says more than half a million people are expected to create a record attendance when we stage the nation’s biggest road-race from January 17-22, beating last year’s estimated record of 495,000.

“The Tour attracts 11,670 visitors from interstate and overseas as well as provide invaluable international exposure through world media outlets with about 60 hours of television coverage generated internationally and 15 hours throughout Australia.

Onlookers will cheer along almost 100 of the world’s top cyclists including Olympians and Tour de France heroes.

We will also see the debut of Tour SouthAustralia.com-AIS the AIS cycling team sponsored by the South Australian Government that will help propel our under 23 road cyclists and track endurance competitors into a number of high profile races across Europe.

Threads Quilt Exhibition

he Threads Quilting Group held their annual one day quilt show and raffle on Friday 6th January in the Yankalilla Uniting Church Hall.

The event was a fundraiser for ‘Yankalilla Red Cross Baby’ Darcy Russell. There were about sixty quilts on show as well as other quilted items.

Started in 1990 by Bronny Young the group includes members from as far as Pt Elliot, Goolwa and McLaren Vale and they meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at the church hall. The group make quilts for any charities who would like them to use for fundraising.

Eight of the Best

n Sunday the 8th January we had the pleasure of being invited guests to the official opening of the “Eight of the Best” exhibition which was held at gallery 88. The special guest speaker Gary Sweet along with local Mayor Peter Whitford and wife Madge, Cr Vanessa Byers and approximately 60 other guests all came together to appreciate the artists talents on show. Ena Harvey warmly welcomed all to the exhibition and stated the intention of introducing all to the thinking minds and skilful hands of those that produced the collection of vibrant paintings. This particular exhibition is being held until 31st January and coincides with the first birthday of Gallery 88.

Congratulations! The wine was flowing courtesy of Trafford Hill Wines which helped wash down the nibbles provided.

Dianne Faccin: Water colour and oil pastelist whose works have been exhibited throughout Australia as well as Arabia, USA, Sweden and Greece as part of the Olympic Celebrations in 2004.

Betty Mahoney: A specialist in the use of the spatula whose oil paintings are recognisable anywhere, that recognition is apparent from the number of her works now in private and corporate collections in Australia and around the world.

Mardi Martin: Passion is acrylics and watercolour. Mardi began her art career as a commercial illustrator and became a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of SA. Mardi’s work is on display in Europe, Indonesia as well as Australia.

Mardi is also a qualified Judge of Fine Art. Terry & Lorraine Lewitzka: The husband and wife team wear many artistic hats. Terry paints in oils and Lorraine in watercolour and oils. They have both written a series of articles for the

Australian Art Magazine and they also teach art.

Lorraine studied in London and USA and Terry is renown for his Impressionist style of oil painting.

Slyvia Preston: In this exhibition Sylvia has shown her versatility in the use of different media to achieve the results she required; pastel, acrylic and watercolour. Sylvia’s work has been sold interstate and overseas. In 1996 Sylvia took an exhibition to Lancashire, England called “Images of SA”, which was well received.

Peter Chaplin: A most enthusiastic water colourist. Peter conducts most enjoyable workshops; this is because of the unseen transmission of his enthusiasm. Peter’s work is known throughout SA and Melbourne and he is soon to have a solo exhibition at the Sumner Gallery, Toorak Gardens.

George Tetlow: Uses oil and mixed media. George was trained at the SA School of Art and began as a book designer and illustrator. George has lectured in Illustration, Drawing and Printmaking at the SA School of Art. George has travelled extensively in India, Turkey, Nepal, Tibet and China and much of his work reflects his love of the East.

All of the invited artists have been acknowledged over the years and have received many prestigious awards in the pursuit of excellence as well as giving a great deal of pleasure to many people. Ena commented that it was a pleasure to have the work of these artists in the Community Gallery and very sincere thanks for their participation.

Ena introduced the special guest by saying that it is always interesting to move from the Art of Drama to the Drama of Art and that Gary Sweet does just that. Gary Sweet graciously agreed to be the special guest some months ago when Ena was a woman on a mission when she spotted him relaxing in a local coffee shop and approached him with her request; his response was friendly and encouraging.

Gary spoke on the wonderful talent on show in the gallery and his personal appreciation of all forms of art.

At the end of Gary’s speech he was presented a gift pack of wine kindly donated by John and Irene Sanderson of Trafford Hill Winery, which was

One touch of sadness was the absence of President Una Bradshaw who was rushed to hospital with a detached retina, which required surgery. Una will be out of action for about 6 weeks, but it must be noted that her absence was sorely noticed and we all wish her well and a speedy recovery, also a big thank you to Una for her part in making the exhibition a success.

The Jacob’s Creek Tour Down Under and the be active Tour Need Your Help

f you haven’t caught up with the growing excitement of the Tour Down Under riders training on our roads, the posters, banners, the buzz on the street and in the shops then you’ve been having too good a holiday.

As part of the Stage 3 Finish at Yankalilla on Friday 20 January, 2006, over 2500 be active and Veteran riders will finish their stage of the Tour from 10am to 2pm. The Tour itself is scheduled to finish around 2.50pm.

All this activity will be celebrated in a podium presentation and a street party with great food, The Bob Johnson Big Band and local musicians, buskers, market stalls, cheap massage & much more excitement and mayhem on the Main Road at Yankalilla.

In managing the be active tour events the organisers are looking to the local communities for their support, particularly for volunteers to assist. Although there will be Bicycle SA staff and volunteers at Yankalilla they require local volunteers for the start and finish of the race, directing riders into Memorial Park, assisting with registration and coordinating road closures and water stops.

H

ow many of you have most of your money tied up in your business? For some, that will include their house and for others not. How do you plan to get that money back? As a business operator myself, I have fallen into the trap of regularly putting money into the business but hardly ever seeming to get much back.

Recent research has indicated that about 98% of business folk plan to get money out when they sell or close down their business. Unfortunately, it also shows that only about 20%

actually do so in any meaningful way. That means that for every one who achieve their ambition, four do not.

Worrying statistics.

The flow on impact is all that work and money is lost to both themselves and the local economy. Gone in the same way as the State Bank disaster but with a difference…..it is still happening.

The main thing to note is that to successfully unlock all that value requires facing reality and

some good solid planning.

Think in terms of allowing 5 or more years. That’s right, very few businesses realise their true worth when the owner decides to “just drop it on the market” without much preplanning. In fact, current best practice is to include in the business plan prior to starting the business, how you intend to get out of it.

The downside to not planning for “succession” is the negative effect it has on everyone involved. With family

businesses, the situation is made so much more complex because it involves such close personal relationships. With long term employees, so many opportunities are lost when their ambitions are not considered.

There is so much involved in this topic, that I will be continuing it next month.

Shooting the Fleurieu

T

he Fleurieu has seen filming in recent months by various TV networks and production companies, who obviously think we have something to offer that other destinations don’t.

‘Surfing the Menu’ filmed an episode on the Fleurieu Peninsula in October. The screening of this instalment was on the ABC on the 4th of January. Hopefully you didn’t miss it.

There was also a film crew in Second Valley and on KI during November to shoot December Boys starring Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame.

The Yankalilla Regional News was on the prowl looking to spot Daniel, but without any luck. The TV Networks were certainly taking an interest at the time which is always good publicity for the region.

minister once warned me to be careful of making an idol out of the Bible. I don't know whether the Christadelphians or the Charismatics are doing just that, but they're certainly making an idol out of something? Barry Steele is foremost in this, but Luke Hopton is not far behind. Their recent discussions in your newsletter reminds me of St Paul on Mars Hill walking the Avenue of the Gods. From where does Mr Steele get such an exclusive view of the Reformation's sola scriptural. He links 'pre-conception' with 'Christian tradition, personal experience or other writings'. For me this is a highhanded way of limiting the Christian's God-given ability to think.

But you need to limit thought if you are going to "expound the Bible as the inspired writers present them ". Something most people are only willing to have a fair go at understanding, for these are: 'things which are hard to be understood' 1 Peter 3:16 as Mr Steele knows. Who would dare claim that they bring themselves to Holy writ without pre-conception? But Barry is claiming to do just that. This is to be above culture, to even be above understanding Biblical Scholarship, Jewish written tradition, Biblical times and the theocracy of God? Who does Barry Steele think he is? No wonder he speaks as if he had the knowledge of absolute truth? Martin Luther had as much insight as Peter was claiming was necessary; to rightly expound the truth and the fables that Paul was warning about in 2 Timothy 4:4. As one of the few people in 1500 years to recognise what Christian tradition had done to Bible truth, he stood or fell on his

understanding of Righteousness by Faith, It took all the faith he had in the verity of faith to stand against the anathema of his church. It is pitiful to see such squabbling amongst Christians about this tongue, that gift, this apparition, that interpretation and cunningly devised fables. It is as if we fear the truth? But this would be to fear Christ himself.

Did not Jesus claim to be "the way the truth and the life"? Pontius Pilate asks Jesus "What is truth?" He did not recognise 'the truth' standing right there in front of him. His verdict as the administrator of Roman Law was to find no guilt in this man. The Law was his ‘truth’. But it was true anyway. There was no guilt in Him. It cannot be clearer. The innocent Son of God is truth in Himself and not only in His doctrine. Otherwise we are in no-wise seated in heavenly places in Christ; as we learn from St Paul's letter to the Ephesians? Sects, together with those who major in minors, who place correct doctrine over love, like the Pharisees of old are not willing to give up believing they can know all truth. They are not willing to sacrifice their groups ‘truth’ to Christ, to this person who claims in himself to be truth.

They reject the Spirit of the Living Word in their desire to worship the Dead Letter. "Please challenge me" as Barry Steele finishes each of his 'Fables' is a sucker ploy, which flies in the face of the admonition to eschew the company of contentious people (1 Corinthians 11:16). Luke Hopton as have many others, fell for it. So where does Mr Hopton stand? What is Mr Hopton's 'truth'? The Charismatic's assertion that you need to have the gift of tongues to be saved is an offence to the righteousness which is secured by faith alone. The Protestant Reformers never went so far as to add sola charismata to sola fides or sola gratia. They saw grace fully expressed in the dictum of faith alone. Reformed doctrine teaches that unless faith fully expresses the presence of the Spirit of God in the life of a person, it is not faith.

In their discussion both writers err in their interpretation of the Gospel, completely missing the point that salvation full and free came as a gift in the flesh of the Christ child, some 2000 years ago. The birth of the Christ babe, whom we know as the Xmas child, was an historical never to be repeated act in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. He

alone is fully God and fully Man. We are told He was slain from the foundation of the world and that when He died, we died. All human views of Christian 'truth' fail not because they are an incorrect interpretation of the Bible but because they fail to express the person of Christ. They fail because of the natural corruptness which co-exists in our mortal bodies with the perfection which is of faith. The Reformers held that as saved humans we remain simul justus peccatore - at the same time both righteous and sinful. Even in writing about God we sin with fumbling fingers over a keyboard. We may speak with the sweetest breath but we are not perfect. We live and we die. Our teeth rot and our last breath is drawn from us. Life is sucked out of us. The rotting flesh of our dead bodies has to be buried to contain the stench and the spread of disease. To put it bluntly our shit stinks. Obviously Steele and Co. in their words are doomed to fail. They are sinners who like us all, fail to reveal His love and kindness. We have to accept this is so despite theirs and our best efforts.

I have to accept this in my own failure. We all fail.

Our minds are enfeebled. We are not privy to the means by which God administers His Government. We argue ferociously over the meaning of that which has so far been revealed in sacred writ. We are doomed to fail because it is not possible for us as created beings to understand the brotherly love and concern, the compassion and mercy of our Creator. Who can 'understand' sin? Who can fathom the means by which He is enabled to offer to each one, salvation full and free as a gift; in the Xmas child. We need the birth of the Christ Child, whose birth as Gentiles we especially celebrate at Xmas. We need Good Friday, His resurrection and the presence of His Spirit. We need this free gift of God to save us. No less a mind than Albert Einstein understood that "The problems of this world cannot be solved by the level of thinking of those who created the problem in the first place." The issue facing the world today is not about tongues, interpretations, fables or apparitions. It is not about terrorism, natural disasters by land and sea, global warming, big business, politics, money or war. It is not even about faith. The issue facing the world today remains as it has been for 2,000 years - the yet unresolved murder of Christ-the ultimate Cold Case! A paraphrase of an observation made by Bob Dylan might run something like this: "You're telling me about Budda and Mahomet, about Moses and the Gospel writers about Peter and Paul, about Steele, Hopton and other Nutters; in one breath, but you never mention the one who came and died a criminal's death!" It would be better for us all Christians, Moslems, Jews, Sikhs and Taoists alike if Steele and Hopton were to take their argumentative spirits and bugger off out of the pages of your Newsletter. For over 2,000 years judgment has been passed on the world and I pass it on to you. Only the return of Christ in His glory can save alive we who remain. He alone can raise from the dead the seed of a re- born mankind and create a world made new. Soon He will come.

Only believe on His name and you will be saved. I have written this for those who do not believe and not for those already of faith. "Those who would proselytise others can challenge me if they would like!"

RE : “BIBLE TRUTH EXPOUNDED”

he unscriptural statement promoted by the Christadelphian preachers that “The Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit gifts have been withdrawn” as we have seen from the Holy Scripture is false, Romans 11: verse 29, “For God does not withdraw His gifts and His calling”, the calling of the Holy Spirit cannot be withdrawn.

We have seen in Acts 2:verse 33 & 39, God does not promise something to “ALL FLESH” -: every person, and then decide to with draw it. This very thought is abhorrent to true believers who know GOD KEEPS HIS WORD AND PROMISE, for scripture states in James chapter 1: verse 17 “Every good and perfect gift (eg Holy Spirit & Holy Spirit Gifts) is from above, and comes down from the FATHER OF LIGHTS, with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of change.” The Christadelphians have based a doctrine on the misunderstanding of one scripture, the scripture in question being 1st Corinthians 13: 8 – 13 “love never fails”, (God is love, 1st John 4:8) “but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail, whether there be tounges they shall cease, whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away”, (Knowledge hasn’t vanished yet) “for we known in part and we prophesy in part” (in this life) “but when that which is perfect is come, then that which is imperfect shall come to an end”. (When Christ returns he will perfect us by transformation, 1st Corinthians 15:verse 42 – 55) “When I was a child I spoke as a child” (in this earthly life we

become and always remain the children of God. Mathew 18:3 + 5:9, 1st John 3:10 + 1st Thessalonians 5:5) “I understood as a child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man” (our transformed resurrection life) “I put away childish things. For now we see through a mirror, darkly;” (In this natural earthly life), “but then face to face.” (This term face to face is used in future tense and when used in the old testament in Genesis 32:30, Exodus 33:11 and Deuteronomy 5:4, tells of a tangible and actual meeting “face to face” with the Lord, it is a future tense term speaking of the Lords second coming when we shall see him face to face). “Now I know in part, but then shall I know even as I am known” to summarize-: we will have the Holy Spirit gifts as children of God until Christs return, when we will be transformed into eternal, mature, supernatural beings, perfected and having the mind of Christ knowing all things, “for we shall be like Him” 1st John 3:2. It is extremely tragic that the blindness of this false doctrine has robbed so many sincere people of their salvation, for if they preach, teach or confess this blasphemy of the Holy Spirit they have no salvation, no forgiveness and no hope, because it is a damnable heresy (refer to 2nd Peter 2:1-4). As I quoted from scripture in the December issue of the newsletter from Lukes gospel 12:10 “He who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven” also in Marks gospel 3:29 “but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit shall never be forgiven, but is guilty before the everlasting judgement” To expound on what I wrote before about this, to infer the Holy

Spirit and the Holy Spirit gifts experience today are a lie, makes this doctrine blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, because scripture states in Johns gospel chapter 8:verse 34 – speaking of the devil “when he speaks he speaks his own lie, because he is a liar, and the father of lies”. So to infer the Holy Spirit experience today is not true, is made be the inference, a lie, and as we have read from scripture Satan the devil is the father of lies. So the long shot of what the Christadelphians are saying is that the Holy Spirit experience today is of the devil, this constitutes blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. This is extremely sad; I’d hate to think how many people have been robbed of all hope of salvation by this deception. Titus 3:4 “but after the goodness and kindness of God our Saviour was manifested, not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His mercy, He saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit; which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, that being justified by His Grace we should be heirs to the hope of eternal life. This is a true saying and these things I want you to constantly affirm” Ephesians 1:13 “In Him you have believed, so you are sealed with the Holy Spirit that was promised, which is the pledge of our inheritance for the salvation of those who are saved and for the GLORY OF HIS HONOUR” Don’t let anyone rob you of your inheritance!

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

“They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 s we move into examination of a further bible topic we leave this challenge to those who still believe in present day possession of the Holy Spirit gifts from God. The challenge is to publicly debate the bible teaching on this subject. We are prepared to arrange this if a goodly number so desire it. I can easily be contacted. Seeing many songs have been played and carols sung in recent days that deal with Jesus Christ’s birth, death and Kingship I have decided to examine the scriptural references that George Frederick Handel put to music and named “The Messiah”. In so doing we will not only see more clearly the past and future work of Jesus Christ but we will also see where Christianity has led many astray from Bible truths.

A

Handel’s Oratorio “The Messiah” On the 13th April, 1742, the music hall in Dublin resounded to the applause of an enthusiastic audience hearing the first ever performance of this great oratorio.

The composer was born in Halle Germany in 1685. In 1711 he immigrated to England and after a financial loss in 1737, which brought on an attack of paralysis, he forsook opera composition to take up the great oratorio’s for which he is now particularly known. Oratorio means “oratory by

music”. They date back to the time when Bibles were so expensive that few could afford them so great texts of the Bible were put to music.

It is recorded that at the conclusion of the first innovation at Dublin, a friend approached Handel. “ I must congratulate you upon such a beautiful piece of entertainment,” he said to the composer.

“Entertainment!” exclaimed Handel, “ That was not written for entertainment, it was written for education” It has hardly been then an unqualified success.

Let’s examine over a few magazine editions the meaning of the Bible texts put to music by Handel.

For a start who is ‘The Messiah’?

Messiah comes from a Hebrew word meaning “the anointed “ of God. Jesus Christ was anointed of God as a prophet, priest and king. The Oratorio opens with some of the Old Testament prophecies that proclaimed the coming of Messiah; then follows the birth of the Lord, his mission 2000 years ago, the Jewish rejection of his teaching, his death upon the cross, the sacrificial meaning of his death, his ascension into heaven, the proclamation of the Gospel unto all nations by the disciples of the Lord, the second coming of Christ, the resurrection and glorification of those who accept his message and the subjugation of the nations to him.

The Oratorio thus dramatises the two advents of Christ. First when he appeared as the Lamb of God for the sin of the world 2000 years ago (John 1:29) and second when he shall again appear, to set up on earth the Kingdom of his Father, and to reign at Jerusalem over a world at peace. (Isaiah 24:23; Jeremiah 3:17; Matthew 5:35; Luke 1:32-

33) The well-known and universally acclaimed Hallelujah Chorus celebrates this latter event. It is the custom of people to stand while this is being sung. Why? The customs dates from King George 1. So moved was he by the sentiments expressed in the chorus and by the fact that if Christ is to reign then all earthly monarchs are necessarily subordinate, that he rose to his feet and the audience rose with him. In the next edition we will examine what these words were that compelled the King of England to stand on that occasion.

L E T T E R S Haycock Point 4WD Safety – A log barrier of the human sort!

I

n October I wrote to this publication of the inaction in protecting life and limb, and the delicate landscape from 4WD dopes driving up Haycock Point. On 24 February 2004 the Council had undertaken to install a log barrier to prevent damage to the fragile hill, enjoyed by virtually ever visitor and resident alike, and to prevent the tragedy of someone being run down.

No doubt only as a result of the power of the press, we got a log but one in the form of a bureaucrat who decided the backflip “solution” was to put a single sign almost at the top of the hill, saying “No Vehicles”… so high up that no 4WD driver would notice it until he or she was half way up the hill!

Or does our council mean to imply 4WDs are allowed to drive up the hill to the point of the sign then turn around and go back down?

For goodness sake it was just a permapine post or two that you agreed to. What we got was a misp lac ed si gn wh ich on ly compounds the negligence.

It’s time this Council woke up to the fact that the Carrickalinga Ward is their cash cow that occasionally needs to be tended. It milks more from each Carrickalinga property than Double Bay!…. and look what we get for it. We have no kerbside recycling, the smallest bins in the country, which we had to buy, few footpaths and no services comparable to the rate take and certainly no log barriers.

Council and councillors wake up before the populous looks at your ‘log’ of achievements. It time you got rid of the “log jam” in council services.

Unexpected Problem

W

e live in the Barossa Valley and came to Normanville with friends for a week’s holiday over the Christmas break. We had a fantastic time at the Parade and thoroughly enjoyed the fireworks.

We commented on how a small country town went to such effort for the enjoyment of its people, even doing more than much bigger towns with their New Year Celebrations.

There was one incident that put a damper on things though. After being recommended to us, we booked into the Normanville Hotel for a meal. The place was busy so we expected a bit of a wait, what we didn’t expect was a wait of just over an hour without any warning of the delay. After our meal I asked if we ordered dessert would there be another long wait. “5 to 10 minutes” was the reply. 15 minutes later the desserts started to arrive. The meals and desserts were nice, nothing ex t ra ord in a ry , b u t I w o u ld

recommend the food. What I would not recommend is the attitude of the “lovely” Lesley. (Apparently, the owner’s daughter). I had to wonder if her parents realise what she is doing to their Hotels reputation. On paying our bill I asked if there was any discount for the long wait. The lady that I asked went to check with Lesley. On her return she said “No, if we give you a discount, we would have to give everyone a discount for waiting” I then said that there really was no excuse for such a delay apart from maybe selling more alcohol and perhaps it would be beneficial to put on extra staff during these busy times, so that your customers would not need to wait so long. She said she would go and get Lesley. When Lesley appeared I smiled at her. She said “Do you want to continue your beef with me?” (Maybe she thought I was growling when I smiled) I just repeated what I had said to the first lady and she said that such a long wait was normal. I replied that I had been in many hotels for meals and had not had to wait as long as that.

In fact we had had a lovely meal at the Yankalilla hotel a couple of nights previous and even after being ‘bumped’ because they had an urgent order for the CFS, still received our meals in about 30 minutes. After rolling her eyes, she suggested that next time we visit Normanville that we frequent the Yankalilla or the Links for our meals and not bother to come back to her hotel. With that she turned on her heels and walked off. Tch, Tch, Lesley, you need an attitude check if you want to be successful working in the hospitality industry. There are much better ways of handling complaints than that.

As a footnote to this letter, we did go to the Links. What a difference!

Our party had magnificent views, service with a smile and excellent food that was served within 15 minutes of ordering. I would thoroughly recommend the Links or the Yankalilla Hotel if you want a relaxed meal with friendly & speedy service.

O

n the evening in question all patrons dining with us were informed there would be a wait for meals due to being a senior chef short due to illness. The hotel was indeed a very busy place, as we served in excess of 300 meals and desserts that evening. Most patrons were content to relax and enjoy the ambiance of the room with family and friends.

On behalf of Lesley we would like to apologise for the way in which she responded to Mr Baxter, however it is our understanding that he had been continually argumentative and demanding towards members of staff, even after having the situation pleasantly explained to him. Management has attempted to contact Mr Baxter by phone, but as yet he has not returned a message.

We are sure that all our loyal and supportive patrons will understand the stress that Lesley has been under due to a traumatic and recent bereavement in her family as well as working constantly to provide visitors and our regular customers with wonderful holiday experiences, while producing some 350 meals per day. We are sure that many readers can think of an instance where Lesley and our staff have made an occasion extra special with a kind word or small touch.

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our guests for your comments and compliments, and inform readers that Lesley has sadly resigned as General Manager of the Hotel in order to spend time with her family, and welcome Raquel back to the position as of January 22nd.

am losing 2 hours a day at work due to the lack of Vac Swim at Normanville. My daughter is very familiar with the fantastic instructors we had in previous years and I am very disappointed with the fact I now have to go to Aldinga (or Pt Elliot). Very poor effort by Normanville Surf Life Saving Club. We miss you Jean, you are a fantastic instructor. Will the real Normanville SLSC please come back!?

any people know that Marilyn & I have just spent a month in France, having returned only a couple of weeks before the current unrest and very pleased to be back and not involved in the riots. According to the news report, and they can’t be all wrong, it seems that most of the cities we visited were affected by the troubles.

Perhaps one could say burning a few cars in Paris is one way to reduce the traffic jams but that would be insensitive. I would however like to say that I am not at all surprised as it seems that France and for that matter Italy

and probably Germany and the rest of the European Common Market countries have some huge problems the solutions for which will require a great deal of effort, goodwill and probably money to solve them. While we were in Paris there was a fairly good natured one day strike by about half the transport workers and a few other odds and sods.

In fact the tour group to whom we had just become attached were unable to go to the Palace at Versailles because of the strike but Marilyn & I had already been so it did not matter.

Now this was a strike by French workers with a standard income telling the Government that it was too expensive to live in France, as indeed it seemed to be to a visiting tourist. (A very ordinary McDonald's Hamburger is E5.20($8.50) a very ordinary medium pizza $A20 and around $A5 for a small coke) Now the people that are restless at the moment are not so lucky, they are the unemployed , and in many cases second or third generation of North African origin who were probably imported to do manual production line Jobs such as in garment factories which have more than likely moved to China. Of course the situation is not improved by the uninvited illegal migrants that seem to be free to roam the EU. The formation of the European Common Market and the common currency the EURO has seriously upset prices; we were told that in Italy at the change over it worked out that the

exchange rate of 2000 lire to the Euro. When it came in and settled down the people finished up with prices more akin to 1000 lire to the Euro, and it would seem that this may also have happened in France. Of course riots in the streets, burning cars and infrastructure is not the way to go and will seriously damage many of the people in need of help and law and order must be restored but do I see a glimmer of understanding in some of the news reports? Of course back in the Lucky Country are we safe from all this or are we seeing a growing split between the haves and the have nots?

e would like to thank the CFS – the units from Yankalilla and the other regions that attended, - for their prompt efficient work in containing the fire, which started on Doctor’s Hill Road, and spread rapidly into our property on that very hot windy day just prior to Christmas. Their prompt action certainly minimised the property damage, but most importantly none of our horses were killed or injured. Also we were grateful to the local units, which re-attended on several occasions over the following days to locate and extinguished various hot spots. It is very comforting to know that we have such dedicated volunteers in our community.

Thankyou and Merry Christmas from “Friends of Yankalilla Centre”

T

he Friends of Yankalilla Centre are a group of very dedicated volunteers who share some time with the people who reside at Yankalilla Centre. They enhance the lives of these people in many ways, one of which is through their fundraising efforts to further the Lifestyle programs for the residents.

The Friends of Yankalilla Centre (FOYC) decided on a raffle for Christmas with a bit of a difference this year. The vision was to go with the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ theme and endeavour to entice 12 organisations to donate an item for the raffle. Our FOYC secretary found that the Christmas spirit is still very much alive as most of the organisations she approached were more than happy to donate. We were all overwhelmed by the generosity of those who donated items for our raffle, some items coming from volunteers, families of residents and local organisations who contributed of their own accord.

The raffle was drawn on Tuesday 13th Dec at 1.30pm at Yankalilla Hotel. The winners were drawn by our recently retired FOYC Chairperson, Terrie Cole. Community Fire Safe Program released for 2006

ire season is here again and already this summer there have been a number of fires across the country. Shirley Smith facilitator with the Community Fire Safe and Mary Crawford Land Management Adviser, with the Land Management Program will be conducting a workshop across in the Inman Valley Hall on Saturday January 21st to assist landholders prepare their properties to reduce the risk of loss through fire.

all land owners (rural and urban) to understand the risks to their property, how to identify the hazards, plan your personal survival – do you go or stay, what do you do on a high fire risk day to prepare your property?

These are more aggressive and have a territory to defend than undesexed females, but all cats are at risk. It is not generally transmitted through cats grooming each other or sharing food and water bowls, because the virus has to be injected through the skin - which is what happens with a bite. The virus destroys one of the immune system's white blood cells, limiting the animal's ability to mount an immune response to any disease. An FIV infected cat may seem healthy without signs for some years.

There may be persistent diarrhoea. Any small wounds on the skin may show delayed healing. FIV is diagnosed by a simple blood test to detect FIV antibodies. It cannot be cured. If a cat is already positive for the d isease, then seco nd ar y infections will need to be treated as they occur. Cats with FIV should be kept as healthy as possible with a good diet and parasite control. These cats should be confined all the time so that they cannot spread the disease to others. Even if a cat used to roam outside, confinement can be made interesting by having wire tunnels and cages in the garden that allows it to have access to the sunshine. was reading the Advertiser in the past week and read an article titled: ‘Health risks as medical worlds collide’.

The article stated that one in four Australians are risking their health by not telling their doctor they are having alternative treatment. More than one half of the population is using some form of alternative medicine, but the majority do not consult their doctor about them.

In the article a naturopath was interviewed and said that many of her clients feared their doctors’ criticism for turning to natural therapies.

I was surprised reading the article that 40 per cent of alternative medicines/therapies were self prescribed vitamins and that only 5.7 per cent visited a Naturopath.

I know I found this article very interesting and it pushed some buttons for me. In my 14 years of clinical practice as a Naturopath there have been many times when patients have been discouraged, criticised and

We have to accept responsibility as health care providers for our actions. Over the years I have heard so many stories from patients that confirm the negative and dogmatic behaviour of some practitioners. Let us remember why we are in this profession.

Surely it is for the benefit of our patients. I certainly agree that if you are taking supplements, with or without prescribed medications, that you should check with your Doctor, Pharmacist or Naturopath. There are examples of natural medications that are detrimental

to patients with certain health conditions, whether or not they are taking other medications.

I do not believe that any Naturopath or Natural Health Practitioner should advise anyone to stop taking a prescribed medication. I do however, from time to time and given the right circumstances, supply my patients with alternatives and recommend that they consult with their doctor to try a different, more natural approach.

Most of Naturopathic Medicine is scientifically based and supported by recent clinical trials and evidence of its success. I see a significant positive change with growing numbers of practitioners sharing information, being more flexible and communicating with the best interest of the patient as the focus. This is an exciting time. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you do not understand the treatment that is being prescribed or recommended for you. Good Health to you all.

nita Clara grew up in Adelaide, but for the past six years has been running Dru Yoga and stress management programs in the northwestern Mallee country of Victoria. Now she is here, not only back in South Australia but living in Cape Jervis. A NOSE BY ANY OTHER NAME

I

f you are a crossword fanatic and the clue being ‘pertaining to the nose’ then research most probably will give you the correctly sought answer as either nasal or nare and, like many words in the English language coming from Latin origin.

We have all seen noses, funny, grotesque, bulbous, red, veined like someone with varicose veins and then there are the noses that seem to take up practically the whole middle of one’s face.

Some noses are inherited from the genes handed down through a family. How many times have you seen a family member and you say to yourself, ‘ would have known whose family they came from, I can tell by the nose’.

When absorbed in a book, one particular feature that has always

intrigued me is when a male hero character has been described by the author as having an aquiline nose. I have mentally conjured up a regal, distinguished, tall, near perfect Adonis.

Imagine my disappointment upon discovering that ‘aquiline’ actually means hooked like an eagle! Not my idea of an Adonis at all, back to the drawing board I say to myself.

Then we come to the ‘roman’ nose.

I must digress a little bit here.

When I was a lot younger, we always had a little thing we used to say about the human face. For instance, if someone had eyes like pools, this became ‘dirty muddy p o o l s ’ , e ar s l i k e fl o we r s , ‘cauliflowers’, lips like petals ‘bicycle pedals’ and a Roman nose, ‘roamin all over the face’. ‘roman nose’ to me meant the ‘roamin’ bit, once again into research, ‘roman nose’ means a high bridged nose.

Somewhere along my ancestral history, there must have been a family member with such a nose, as it was passed along to one of my rellies’ and it is really ‘roman’ or high bridged as I now know.

There was an uncle of mine, and I can only liken his appearance to a cartoon character called Count Igor.

This uncle was about six foot six, a pinhead, ears that stuck out at right angles from his head, and a nose that was long and thin. However, I cannot find the proper name for such a shaped nose. By the way, this uncle was a dear, bless his departed soul.

ome of the Friends of Yankalilla Library met at Lilla’s for Morning Coffee on November 14th to share books they had read on the theme of ‘Family – Fables, Foibles and Feats’.

Discussion was lively and darted from one subject to another.

The choice of books was as varied as the experiences and reading interests of the group. Pat had recently read a biography of Condoleezza Rice, while Helen talked about Cold Comfort Farm.

Paul brought I, Claudius, but chose to talk about The RaggedTrousered Philanthropist after hearing Jo’s synopsis of a book of family history available in the library. David enthused on the literary quality of The Hobbit, while Joan recalled the enchantment of Mao’s Last Dancer, Barbara shared the text and illustrations of a collection of Welsh legends and Ruth recalled the pleasures of a children’s book Apple Mouse. Lexia was able to add a range of reflections to much of the discussion.

Mt Compass Agricultural Careers Beefing up Education to Milk out a Career

ec 22nd saw 20 people both farmers and prospective dairy industry participants travel by bus from Mt Compass to the Adelaide Zoo. It was planned that by combining some guest speaker on the bus with the Education Unit at the Zoo that the tourist would get a good insight to attracting, training and retaining people to the industry.

Dairy Careers Project organised Peter Both (Project Manager, Futures Connect from DECS) to speak about the requirement of DECS in regards to the legal, professional and personal areas of having work experience student, workplacement students and the first time employee. Most of the basics that his department required were felt by the group as probably a great place to start with an employment strategy for any business and employee / employer relationships. Peter spoke about the varying needs and expectations of the different generations within the workforce and how they interact with in that workforce and then how those business need to understand these relationships. Peter gave a great opening and insight for the session by Ruth Hall (Education Unit Manager for the Adelaide Zoo). Jill McKenzie found Peters tips on dealing and training young people very useful and that it would help her at home with her younger staff and any students wanting to do work experience on the farm in the future.

Some challenging questions were posed and suitably rewarded by Kym Mathew to the group about them fulfilling their needs and what they

were expecting from the day. He also challenged their knowledge on the local dairy industry, Mt Compass Area School Dairy Careers Project, SADA and the Adelaide Zoo. At the zoo in one of the interactive display rooms Ruth Hall took the group through the process of what the Zoo requires to and from work experience candidates. She explained the “Job and Persons” specification required showed the actual job description and then explained the selection process. Trevor Anderson and John Burger found this area of the session valuable as they were looking to improve these processes in their businesses.

Ruth then explained the induction process that they use for students as well as new employees is extremely critical as the level of compliance forced upon them by their insurance company and Workplace Services requires them to be extremely organised and well versed in the documentation of the process. Matt Campbell (Trainee) found that the process allows all parties to be aware of their own and joint responsibilities in a good working relationship and that this would be a great basis for developing better working conditions.

Both Tristan and Rob Mulhern were very keen on the staff development structure that Ruth explained with the reference to some resource material that she has made available to the group.

Rob as always was keen to learn new processes and asked some very good thought provoking questions. Jill McKenzie and Wendy Ness were

The Connor family thought the presentation to be a good way to learn about how other business deal with the generation gap, how to sought out what everyone needs in employment situation and just a different view of the complicated human resource area.

Jane Bartlett Education Project Officer with Rural Skills Australia based with SAFF utilised the return trip to Mt Compass to speak about the need for more communication between industries and educators. Jane hopes to promote a variety of industries so that more people are aware of the great career opportunities within agriculture and that the need for a defined career path is critical to possible employees for them to believe in a future within our industry. Gino Pacitti was one of the many that enjoyed the day and summed up the day by saying that it was a great learning experience missed out by those who were reluctant to look outside their square.

CEC AND THE SNAKE Cec O’Leary lay back on his bunk in the shack Near the beach at Tunk Head, which was right off the track.

This deserted old hut become home overnight When the mulloway bit from the beach at first light.

Cec was peacefully reading in candle-lit glow And he started to doze with the wax burning low.

When he woke with a chill from a presence unknown For his sixth sense declared he wasn’t alone.

In the flickering light Cec was feeling distressed As he felt through the blanket this weight on his chest.

And, his cause for concern soon became deadly clear As his sleepy eyes focused in mesmerized fear.

For coiled up on his chest a big tiger snake lay.

He was looking for warmth and he’d moved in to stay.

As Cec eyeballed the snake he was cashing his chips For his bed mate was smiling and licking his lips.

Now Cec knew one bite from its poisonous glands That St Peter would have a new guest on his hands.

Because help was a climb then a half then a half hours drive – Which was surely a trek that he’d never survive.

If he’d died from just fright ‘twould have been no surprise As he stared in the depths of its hypnotic eyes.

Like a cobra it swayed to the pound of his heart Which was threatening to blow his poor rib-cage apart.

Old Cec reasoned his only defence was attack So he let his eyes wander the sides of the shack.

But his problem got bigger – his skin gave a crawl With snakes candle lit shadow blown up on the wall.

Then a glimmer of hope in that candle lit room – Leaning just within reach stood an old witches broom.

Cec adroitly reached out not to wobble the bed While he kept a sharp eye on the snake’s swaying head.

His tight knuckles glowed white as they closed round the staff.

Now this unwelcomed guest he would bludgeon in half.

Inching slowly the broom lifted over his head – With a swift coup de grace soon this snake would be dead.

As Cec poised there to strike his brave plan fell apart

Like the candle that flicked – so did beats of his heart. ‘cause the darkness closed in and he stiffened in fright For the tiger snake hissed – and it blew out the light.

YANKALILLA COMMUNITY LIBRARY NEW OPENING HOURS

F

rom the 1st January 2006 the Library has received from the Education Department an additional allocation of hours for the Community Library assistant.

This, combined with an additional contribution for wages from the Yankalilla District Council, means that the Library is able to open for longer hours from the beginning of this year. The most significant change is that the Library will now be open from 9.30am to 4.30 pm on Saturdays.

The new opening hours are as follows:

NORMANVILLE NEW YEARS EVE PAGEANT

I

t just gets bigger and better every year. Again this year we were blessed with the perfect weather for our parade. 40 odd floats sang, danced and performed their way to the beach front in front of a huge crowd. The decorated floats were fantastic, what a great effort, congratulations to all those who entered and did so much work to make their floats so impressive.

It was nice to see more of our holidaying rate payers become involved in the Parade with floats and walkers again this year, 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the float competition went to Watchmans beach girls & mermaids, The Vegemites & The Mexicans all Carrickalinga visitors, well done.

4th prize went to Maids a Milking from Lilla’s Cafe and 5th prize was Rolf does the Queen starring our own John & Bill Jelfs as the Queen & Prince Charles. Popular floats included Sleeping Beauty, MASH, Shane Warne, Hillbillies, Old Lady in a Shoe, Starwars, Way out West, and many more. This year some of our sponsorship from the Normanville Hotel was dedicated to the best individual walkers, riders etc, and winners being The Garbageman, Old Man jailbird, the Scooter Clowns and Robin Hood. Thank you to both of our major sponsors this year including the Yankalilla Council,

Thank you to all who have supported our fundraising efforts this year and to our Lions Club for their ongoing commitment to road closures, Barry Oates’s challenging job of keeping the beach car park clear in readiness for the parade, Rick from Work Zone Traffic Control for his efforts at the beach car park all day; Yankalilla Regional News for their continued support and the residents of Katherine Drive for putting up with total chaos for the night. Special thanks again to Baldock Earthmoving for the donation of our Glow Van. Thank you to our Judges Mark and Roxanne Chapman, Jan & Tony Philp & Kathy & Tania, job well done. The crowd at the foreshore were fed by our local service groups, entertained by Mobile Amusements and our own DJ Ashley Curtis and of course the grand finale of the night was a spectacular fireworks display after dark from Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics. YANKALILLA LADIES PROBUS CLUB

t our November meeting we celebrated our 15th Birthday and proceedings began with President Betty introducing our guests:- Bob McCann and Secretary Don Williams of the Yankalilla Probus Club, President CD Mlynowskyj and Mike Rice of the Yankalilla Rotary Club and the representatives from visiting Ladies Probus Clubs – Encounter Bay, Goolwa, Southern Vales, Strathalbyn and Victor Harbor. Vice President Lois Martin, Past President Ruth Davis and President Betty Brockbank took part in the birthday cake ceremony and new member Lil Hawker was

pinned by President Betty and welcomed to our club. Thanks to Avril Clark for baking and decorating the birthday cake and to committee members for providing flowers for the tables.

The Yankalilla Bowling Club provided a pleasant venue and their catering ladies served us an excellent luncheon. Following lunch we were entertained by Gail Kingston, with Harold Phillis at the keyboard. Gail used her personality and vocal talents to give plenty of feeling to some early jazz tunes, and interspersed these with some old favourites, encouraging us to join in the singing by providing books of words.

Harold demonstrated the progression of the early Negro music into traditional jazz, and also his skill at the keyboard as he accompanied Gail.
