Channel 7 News and Weather Reporter Melody Horril made a flying visit to Yankalilla Area School on Friday 16th November to report on the Edible Kitchen Garden. Melody was greeted by excited students when the helicopter landed on school grounds. Melody was shown the garden and treated to a lunch prepared by Collen McCleod of Lilla's Cafe.

A brief report aired on television that evening.

Rapid Bay jetty construction is getting ready to commence with core sample drilling well underway (see cover pic) The Classic Adelaide (see cover pic) came to Yankalilla again this year. What a great turnout of people to welcome them to town.

Australia’s Only Cow Race 2008 Compass Cup

et a mooove on to Mt Compass for Australia’s Only Cow Race.

The 2008 Compass Cup will be held on Australia Day, Saturday the 26th of January at the Mt Compass Oval.

In its 35th year, the 2008 event is going to be the biggest and the best yet, there couldn’t be a more “Aussie” way to celebrate Australia Day than by jumping on a cow and enjoying the fun at the Compass Cup. This action packed, fun filled family day is being turned up a notch to celebrate its birthday (and Australia Day), all in the name of raising money for the community and charity.

There will be new sideshows, new stalls, new events and new teams to take on the challenge of riding cows such as ‘Splatter’, ‘Pull the Udder One’ and ‘Dung Fling’ to victory and cash prizes.

There are plenty of other crowd participation events for both young and old, so get involved with the fun!

You can test your strength and attempt the thong throwing, tug-o-war against a tractor or ride the wobbly cow around an obstacle course.

Stay on after the final race and party til the cows

come home at the after race concert.

Superman of entertainment, Patrick McMahon, will make a special one night only appearance at the Compass Cup, thanks to Herbie Glockner from H & H Electrical and Unimin.

Patrick will play all your favourite country tunes as well as hits from the 60’s through to the new millennium including songs by well known artists, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Robbie Williams, U2, Jet and more.

Patrick will introduce the after race concert from 6pm and he will be followed by seasoned local performers Full Circle.

Gates for the 2008 Compass Cup open at 11am with the fun kicking off at 1pm, entry is $6 for adults and children are asked to give a gold coin which will be donated to Variety, the Children’s Charity.

If the weather is a little warm on the day, don’t despair the Compass Cup will go on. There will be plenty of shade, sprinklers and water games for the kids.

t the General Meeting on Wednesday 7th November concern was expressed about the results of the Council Audit (completed in June last year) as reported in The Times. In the audit of council's adherence to the State Records Act council scored one out of five in nine of the 10 key areas assessed, and two out of five in the other.

Bungala Ward Councillors were invited to the meeting. Unfortunately there were none present to enable discussion on this topic.

ovember meeting is always a double header being our birthday month and International Month. We decided to focus on International this year as last year all attention went into our 70th birthday. We welcomed Yvonne Regnier and Colleen Lowery to our meeting who were our guest speakers talking on China, the country of study.

They gave us a very interesting talk on the facts of China and their experience there. Their highlight was climbing the Great Wall, (but they didn’t see any

rabbits!) Then they showed us a DVD of an acrobatic concert they had been to see. This was truly magnificent performed by people seventeen years of age.

We can look forward to a spectacular opening ceremony to the 2008 Olympic Games. We collected $25 for pennies of friendship. Members praised Maureen Stone for her beautiful handicraft work she entered into Cundell Cup Day. We are going to be busy over the next couple of months with catering commitments. Firstly the Classic

Car Rally providing Devonshire morning tea at the Yankalilla oval on Friday 23rd November.

Then providing morning tea and lunch (along with other organisations) for the Normanville Surf Lifesaving Club Nippers Carnival on Sunday December 16th. Our State objective this year is assisting our local community so we feel we are doing just that.

The way Grandma used to do it!

A

s a Natural Therapist I believe in the old, well proven ways of healing! Some of those ideas are hundreds of years old and have healed people long before modern drug therapy was established. For poisonous insect bites - including White Tailed Spider bites - the simple answer is a raw grated potato poultice, preferably applied immediately,-this must be left on over night! However this simple recipe has helped people even if the bite was old and infected, in the worst cases it has only required two overnight applications. The red skinned potato is preferred, it appears to have stronger drawing powers - but if that is not available, any good old potato will do. Wash it thoroughly, you can grate it finely with the skin on - about a tablespoon full - and apply it with gauze directly to the affected area.

Then put some plastic over it, that's easy with fingers or toes, but not always on flat surfaces. You can use cling-wrap and tape it on with ordinary masking tape. Protect your sheets from any potato juice, it won't wash out. In the morning remove the wrapping, If the infection has not improved over one night, apply a second night and a third night, but I have never seen it take more than two applications. This easy poultice also works for boils, or infections on finger- & toenails, all those infections under the skin. Make sure you ALWAYS have a raw potato in the house!!!!!!!!! I have lots more old-fashioned ideas if anyone is interested!

District upgrade

fter a fabulous 5 days holidaying on the Yorke Peninsula, we returned home to Normanville feeling quite uneasy and felt I had to express my concerns. When we were away we vis ited A r d r os sa n, Sta ns b ur y, Edithburgh, Wool Bay, Coobowie, and Point Turton and we were very impressed with the facilities that all of the towns had to offer tourists. Every town was very clean and all of the main residential areas had curbing in there streets, and well gravelled footpaths. The foreshore areas of these towns had exceptional boating facilities with excellent boat ramps, ticket machines for boat launching, $5 per launch or $110 per year or concession holders $88 per year, fish cleaning facilities, great toilet blocks, excellent jetties, playground facilities for the children, electric barbeques for tourists and very friendly residents.

Every town was very clean. I talked to a local while I cast a line off one of the jetties and he asked me where I came from, I replied Normanville down on the south coast; only-to-get a-reply" isthat the town that has a jetty that doesn't reach the water". I felt very embarrassed. Wouldn't it be great if it could be extended so our kids, grandchildren and families were able to go fishing and actually catch something? Here we are living in a great place only an hour from Adelaide in a town that has some of the dearest council rates in the state and I feel, and I am sure I am not alone, that there a lot issues that need to be addressed with in our council area. It is great to have our council building upgraded but 3 million seems excessive and do we really need the shop in the Mitre 10 complex at approximately $400 per week? Why couldn't a hall be used and our taxpayers money be used for other areas that need addressing.

Eg. Curbing and Footpaths of all roads with in the Normanville Town Centre Herbert St, Field St, Heathcote, Cheesman, Marjory, Croser, O'Connor and many more.

Eg. There are many roads at Carrickalinga that also need Curbing and Footpaths.

Eg. Extending our Jetty and putting in a descent boat launching facility.

Eg. Electric barbeque on the foreshore area Eg. An upgrade to our television towers to prevent the ever continuing TV reception problems.

Eg. Drink recycle locked wire cages, with funds going to community projects.

Eg. Upgrading Camping and Caravan Facilities at Rapid Bay Eg. Commercial zoning areas within Yankalilla and Normanville for future developments.

Eg. A Local Bus for residents to get into Normanville, from Carrickalinga and also a regular bus service To Victor Harbor.

Whether some of us like it or not our town is going to grow and we need to up grade our facilities accordingly.

One Last Thing I need to Say, that is, I love to see roads being bituminised and curbed but I must ask the question.

Is the rest of Jervois Rd going to be curbed to meet up with new up grade of Aldrich and Martin roads or is it going to be left like it is looking unfinished and very untidy? I must congratulate the Links Development, the whole area is looking fantastic, and at least they are looking forward to the future, by attracting tourists, creating jobs, guaranteeing the growth of our Town!

Re Council Review

f you read the article "Pets on the beach under review" in the V.H. Times of November 1st, I am the person who made 'the latest complaint' to the Yankalilla Council. This complaint was prompted by an incident on September 14th• when my daughter, our dog and I were walking on the beach south of the jetty. We were some distance apart when my daughter was told to 'get further up the beach', and I was told to 'get out of way' by a male horse-rider heading north. (At the time a truck could have passed comfortably between, and on either side of us!) We declined to do so and when I remarked that we had as much right to be there as he did I was told that' if you were 20 years younger’( I am 77 .) At the time my daughter was restraining the dog, painful for her damaged elbow and for the dog's throat, and a courtesy quite wasted on the 'gentleman' and his female companion. They galloped towards the jetty and then back towards Lady Bay, passing us with no apparent difficulty. We continued south but, fortunately, did not release the dog as both riders were seen retur ning. We consider ed the Carrickalinga side of the jetty but there were, as is usual, a number of dogs there. Since we could not give our dog a run, we decided to go home. The horse riders gave us an offensive and quite gratuitous wave off, accompanied by smirks. (what charm!)

T hi s o u tr a g e o u s p e r f o r ma n c e prompted my letter to Council in which I suggested: (1) That Council seems unaware that, since their last review, the population of Normanville/Yankalilla, and hence the number of beach users, has increased markedly.

(2) That horse manure is quite as offensive on the beach as dog faeces.

Council expects the latter to be removed, why not the former?

(3) That I know of no other public, well-used and extensive stretch of beac h to w hic h hor s es ha ve unrestricted access. (A privilege onehorse rider, at least, interprets as a divine right).

(4) That local dog owners, in my considerab le exp erience, are considerate and courteous, leashing their dogs in the vicinity of others.

(5) That whatever Council decides, some attempt to police their rules would be useful. (Horses swimming adjacent to the jetty is supposed to be a no-no).

(6) That most dogs find horses threatening (and vice-versa) and, therefore, that clearly limited and separate times for horse and dog use of the beach, south of the jetty, seems, to me, to be the obvious fair and inte llige nt op tion. A ls o, a n y restrictions should be prominently displayed on all public access points to the beach - not the case at present.

(7) That, finally, and most critically, children running heedlessly, as children are wont to do, from the caravan parks , the b eac hs ide subdivisions or where-ever, run the risk of being trampled by galloping horses. Miraculous that it hasn't happened already.

If you have had a similar encounter, and/or share some of my concerns, please WRITE, however briefly, to Council. Phone complaints, from my experience, are largely ignored.

STOP PRESS. I was told on November 8 that Council's Review decision of October 18 has prompted a questionnaire, available at Council Chambers, the library and on line at www.yankalilla.sa.gov.au. Are you aware of this? Certainly the Council' November Newsletter makes no mention of it.

"Do We Care?"

o the Yankalilla and District Community - are we neglecting our youth? The TV news on Monday 29th October 2007 told us of the tragic death of a Whyalla girl killed by a falling tree. Mid November three Mount Gambier youths were killed in a road accident. Last year two of our well respected youths were killed in another r oad accident - w as counselling ever offered to the grieving friends? To my knowledge none was ever offered or made available. The ramifications of unresolved grief are many. Anger leading into rage, moodiness becoming depression just a couple of possible outcomes. Without professional help the coping mechanism can be alcohol or substance abuse - do we want this for our district? Or - Can there be a support system with professional “debriefers” set up if or when future tragedies may occur?

The Norfolk Island Pines on Willis Drive

T

ravelling south from Normanville to the Gorge, the Norfolk Island pines form an attractive tree line along the roadside, particularly around the seafront. These trees are of varying ages as they were planted in stages over several years beginning between 1940 and 1950. I believe that my father Bernie Williss, as Chairman of the Yankalilla District Council, following the amalgamation of Rapid Bay Council with Yankalilla, initiated the planting of the Norfolk Island trees as a memorial to Mr Garnett Kelly.

The Rapid Bay Council received an inheritance from the estate of Mr Garnett Kelly, a councillor and local landowner, who was killed in the first world war. The interest from the Kelly bequest purchased the Norfolk Island Pines for the project. Childhood memories on the health and growth of each tree and no matter what tactics Mum or us children used, Dad’s attention to the trees could not be

diverted. Now I particularly enjoy travelling along Willis Drive past Garnett Kelly Park savouring the areas beauty and reminiscing on past history as told to me.

ooray, finally someone has the finances and ability to set up another pharmacy in this district. I gave up on 'Jelfs' pharmacy months ago after being fed up with their very expensive pricing. Also, unless I asked, they would always issue me with 'home brand' medication instead of what the Doctor had prescribed. If

s most people already know a new pharmacy has opened in Yankalilla in the derelict Senior Citizens building that has had a past history as a dental surgery and a butcher.

According to a letter that has been doing the rounds it appears that our local FEDERAL - or is that FERAL member Alexander Downer has had some influence on the body that decides these matters which is blatantly political pre election activity.

In his letter to the landlord to claim a few doubtful votes he says “this is great news for the people of Yankalilla and surrounding regions. The pharmacy will no doubt provide invaluable services to the community.”

I have been in the “Yankalilla and surrounding regions” for 40 years,

with Alexander Downer and family visiting my store on a number of occasions during that time when holidaying at Carrickalinga.

Apparently it is expedient to forget this minor detail; a bit like TAMPA CHILDREN OVER BOARD or an IRAQ WAR. Perhaps he should have a career change and do the cross dressing in his net stockings.

My real hassle, however, is with the Executive of the Senior Citizens Club whose long term President has been instrumental in this saga. Instead of running a second-hand shop in rental premises the club purchased the building which I am sure the dentist was pleased to off load. Sure he paid rent for a while till he sold the business and the new dentist moved to Normanville. Alas the Senior Citizens were without a paying tenant! Let’s put a chemist in!

The proposition went to the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme, the arbitrator of all things who rejected it on good grounds 18 months ago. June this year saw the decision overturned with or without Mr Downers ignorant interference.

So we have two pharmacies for 4200 people according to the Bureau of Statistics which is significantly below the recommended number. Not only have we now two pharmacies but the President of the Seniors is promoting it to the members and anyone else that will listen, as their pharmacy - support it and support the Seniors.

Competition is healthy, it keeps everyone on their toes and gives people choices. But, where the population of an area according to official records can only support one business of a particular type, adding a second puts pressure on both businesses to survive.

I wish to assure my loyal customers that my dedicated staff and I will continue to go above and beyond the normal requirements of customer service as we have done for the past 40 years.

CHURCH ATTACKED AGAIN.

or the third time this year, Christ Church has had money stolen from the Shrine Box. By world standards, this has not been a huge amount. Yet the loss is considerable. Money is placed in this box as a Thanks Offering from people who visit the Shrine. The Shrine is important to many people and continues to be a place of healing and comfort.

I find such a theft of money to be a despicable act and an attack on the Church at large. It is also a tragic act because it is the act of people who have no respect for the property of others, no respect for the place of the Church in our society, and no respect for those who love this place and are prepared to travel long distances to find comfort here. My guess is that the thieves sought money to purchase drugs or alcohol for their own gratification. Isn’t it sad that this may be all they have to look forward to in life.

The Church will survive. These acts

do not close a Church down. We are resilient, as we have shown over the past years. We are almost free of our debt to the Diocese and we are ready to leave the past behind and move forward. To any members of the Anglican Church, former worshippers at Christ Church or newcomers to the district, I extend a warm invitation to join us for the Eucharist at 9:30am on Sundays.

uilts sewn by members of the Threads Group sold for over $1600 at the recent Quilt Auction. All of the proceeds went to either local charities or to the Lions who support a wide variety of deserving groups. Threads meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Uniting Church hall in Yankalilla, between 9.30am and 2.00pm. We welcome visitors and new members. We will be holding our annual charity quilting bee on the 8th 9th and 10th of January 2008, in the Uniting Church hall, from 9.30 each day. The quilts made on these days are given to groups who work with people in need, or are worked on for a longer time and end up in the next Quilt Auction. Visitors are welcome, come and see our organised chaos which produces such great results.

TRUE COLOURS

T

he Junior School worked hard all term to put on a very successful performance during the last week of term three.

The performance was titled TRUE COLOURS and was based loosely around the story of the Pied Piper. The school values were emphasized and demonstrated in the various activities from each class, represented by a particular colour.

These were collected by Seymour (Trek Hopton) and Eileen (Ruby Meyers) who used these virtues to find the lost children of YAN. The choir sang their way through the 11 scenes.

A sincere thank you goes to all the teachers who ‘groomed’ their classes for the various scenes and for everyone connected with the behind the scenes work such as sound, props, stage and costumes. A lot of positive comments have been received from the community which is very much appreciated.

A

t our recent meeting on 13 November 2007, we had Richard Flashman, AM and John Elster (Master) of the Witton Masonic Lodge, Eric Wright (Master) and Eddie Belle from the Endeavour Masonic Lodge (both based in Noarlunga Downs) and Robert Clyne, CEO of Freemasons Foundation presenting us with a token 5 of the promised 40 hampers for distribution within our Council area this coming Christmas. We wish to truly thank them for their generosity in donating this large number of hampers. We have many lonely and disadvantaged people who will really appreciate this kind gesture.

This is one area of our committee. Mostly we are known for our Transport work in driving

clients to medical and allied appointments.

The driving is done by a group of volunteer drivers who donate their time freely. While the Yankalilla Council is fundamental in providing the cars, registration and a part time paid coordinator to manage the paperwork required by HACC and other administration duties, donations are still an important feature of balancing the finances, jointly subsidised

by HACC and Council. Many members of our community have truly appreciated the services of the Transport facility.

Rescued

n Monday 12th November, while sailing my 30ft yacht from North Haven to Wirrina, I encountered a strong gully wind out from Myponga Beach.

This caused a knock-down, the battery dislodged from its mounting, severed an engine oil line and shorted out the electrics.

So in strong winds and very choppy seas I was in the embarrassing situation of having to call out for help.

It was then that I found out how good our emergency services are. Within minutes I

had the Normanville Police on radio giving me directions on what to do and assuring me that the Sea Rescue was on the way.

After activating a flare they were able to locate and tow me into Wirrina, so I would like to thank the S.A. Sea Rescue Squadron (Wirrina Flotilla), the Normanville Police and the S.A. Ambulance Service for a job well done.

Lesson learnt - make sure all equipment is secure before going to sea.

Children’s Week Celebrations at Yankalilla

his event was held as part of celebrating Children’s Week, with this years theme being “A Caring World Shares.” Children and staff came to kindy in their pyjamas, slippers and dressing gowns.

Together we all shared a healthy breakfast which included wholemeal toast, fruit, muesli and squeezing our own orange juice!

Afterwards we all went for a walk to the community playground – some still in their pyjamas!! This focus of the event was to encourage children to recognise the importance of caring for ourselves so that we can then care for others. An important theme for this years Children’s Week celebrations. The event was supported by a grant from the Children’s Week Association of South Australia.

The Centre will be hosting its annual “End of Year Family Night” on Thursday 13th December from 6 – 7:30pm. The evening will commence with a very brief AGM, followed by a special performance by the children at the centre “Christmas in Australia”. This will be followed by entertainment by Fritz the clown, a sausage sizzle tea and of course – A visit from Father Christmas!! The Centre invites all of its families, extended families and interested community members to share in this special event.

I think that the Yankalilla Art group party must set the ball rolling for all the Club parties leading up to the Festive Season. I really must congratulate all the members for the wonderful provision of ‘yummy’ food. Not only was there quantity but quality and variety to entice everyone to happily indulge without feeling too guilty about extra inches on the old waist line. It was also great to see that our wine growing heritage was not forgotten during the festivities. At this last meeting for 2007 it was good to enjoy the company of so many of the group without the pressure of trying to produce a masterpiece. Just to relax and talk about painting or anything else that might come into one’s head. We were sorry that some members, through illness and other commitments, were unable to join us but they were not forgotten, and there is always next year!

My earliest experience, on arriving in Australia, of the term ‘bring a plate’ was just that. No one told me that there was supposed to be something on it. Over time, however, I have learned the error of my ways and do not go anywhere without my trusty plate of sausage rolls.

Our delightful ‘Christmas Gallery’, two or three pictures brought by each Member for display, was well worth viewing and a challenge, to such as myself, to do better in the future.

I wish all our Members, Tutors and Sketch Block Readers a happy Festive Season and a joyous New Year We will commence on the first Thursday in February, 2008. Notification of details of the first five meetings will be made mid-January 2008.

averley Homestead at Willunga is showcasing the work of Yankalilla artist Peter Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Wojciak from Richmond during November and December.

On November 10 noted Fleurieu artist and identity George Tetlow of Studio 13 Normanville led the artists in a discussion of their work in front of fifty people gathered for this different form of an opening. He delved into the inspiration and source of their painting, the way they paint and when, what artists have influenced them, and what drives them to do it.

“For example, spend some time in McLaren Vale, Willunga, Aldinga Beach, Hope Forest and Kangarilla then head to Normanville before taking some time out for a swim or an ice-cream on the sand.

“Strathalbyn is worth a visit on its own as are Goolwa and Victor Harbor.”

Ms Becker said the Fleurieu Peninsula was gaining a reputation for its art while events such as the Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale – Australia’s richest landscape painting prize - had helped raise the region’s profile even more.

“If you’re into all things beautiful, such as a painting, sculpture or a breathtaking piece of antique furniture, then prepare to be inspired by the Fleurieu Peninsula,” she said.

“There are numerous galleries, markets, art

cooperatives, curio and antique shops in towns and the region boasts one of the highest concentration of artists per capita in Australia.

“Attractions such as Red Poles Gallery in McLaren Vale are fantastic for the region offering a mix of food, wine and art with a café, gallery, B&B, art classes and cabaret evenings.”

Competition forms, available at Fleurieu Peninsula visitor information centres and along the trail, must be lodged at participating outlets once all stamps have been collected before 31 January 2008.

n exciting new development in the district is the opening early December of Carrickalinga Creek Vineyard’s cellar door.

The owners, Tim Anstey and wife Helen planted the vineyard in 2001 with 2005 being their first vintage for red wines and 2007 for whites.

Tim and Helen’s decision to choose this area was inspired by the acclaimed book “Viticulture and Environment” written by Dr John Gladstones. Dr Gladstone identified parts of the lower Fleurieu Peninsular as having climatically the best conditions of mainland South Australia for table wine production. The

great climatic advantage of the area is its strong maritime influence which results in minimal daily temperature variations during the ripening period. This produces grapes with distinctive varietal flavours.

All of the wine is made from grapes grown on the 7 acre vineyard. The red wine is made on the premises using open fermenters and a basket press. The wines for tasting are the 2005 Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2007 Chardonnay, Rose and Chardonnay/ Viognier.

The cellar door is located on the crest of the hill above Normanville Heights (next to the big water tower) with stunning views of both the coastline as well as the vineyard and hills.

irstly a Merry and safe Christmas to all the locals and visitors in our wonderful Fleurieu Peninsula.

Since the October newsletter the following callouts have been attended to : 3 callouts that resulted in "stop calls" prior to arriving on scene, 2 fires, 2 storm damage incidents and 4 motor vehicle accidents. Two of the accidents involved vehicle entrapments and

Usually a rescue team consists of a Safety Officer/Incident controller, 3 to 4 persons conducting the rescue and a purpose built rescue vehicle , 2 persons and one fire truck doing fire cover and a team of 2 to 3 maintaining road traffic control. The Ambulance Officers and on occasions a Doctor, are right in there during the total rescue, monitoring and administering first aid as required. Our local Police Officers are always on scene to provide assistance with communications and traffic control.

We maintain a high level of training to prepare us for the worst case scenarios that unfortunately happen all to frequently in our group. In our group we support each other on incidents to ensure we have the numbers to conduct a rescue. Our group consists of the following units. Inman Valley, Hay Flat, Parawa, Rapid Bay, Cape Jervis, Myponga and Yankalilla where we are a C.F.S and S.E.S Brigade. All the members are volunteers and devote an incredible amount of their time training and attending call outs. To all employers who have volunteer C.F.S. members working for them, thankyou for your support. The employers in our group allow our members to attend callouts whilst still covering their wages. These employers provide a service which is as valuable as the C.F.S members themselves. Without your support we would not be able to cover the varied tasks that we are required to attend.

his month Andy Mitchell from the Normanville Bushwalkers spoke to us about his third trek into the Himalayas, his photographs and 'on the spot' commentary allowing us to share with him one of this world's most exciting and dangerous adventures. With five fellow trekkers Andy climbed Lhakpa Ri, a 7,045m peak overlooking the north face of Everest. (This face is approached from Tibet, peaks on the south face approached from Nepal).

After climbing Kalapattar, 5,500m, on the southern face in 1994, Andy wondered what it would be like to go higher!!

Andy's group flew over Everest to Lhasa (3,600m), where they began their acclimatisation. Lhasa's population of 250,000, mainly Tibetan, worship in the city's numerous white-walled, golden roofed (brass?), monasteries. Andy also visited the Dalai Lama's old palace, circa 600, now a museum. The Chinese takeover well established, Chinese characters dominate bi-lingual shop signs; other

presences are the stark apartment blocks, for Chinese settlers. China has also built a railway to Beijing, Lhasa's railway station having the ambience and proportions of a palace.

From the truck carrying them up the slopes and through the old towns of Xigatse and Xiegar Andy looked out on greenhouses and irrigation channels, and public phones - the walls plastered with cow pats being dried for fuel. 'Kids came out of their homes calling, "Hello! Money!"', says Andy. Along the way they passed wheat and barley stooks, and check posts. They noted that China has erected power lines and built many roads, these roads usually running along river valleys with unstable slopes, rockfalls are common.

Andy's first view of Everest was from a bus stop! At their first camp, the area inhabited, they were surprised to find a yak herder, on a pony, looking into their tent. In that area mixed herds of sheep and goats grazed in countryside so open and huge that man seemed insignificant. The advanced base camp where they stayed for acclimatisation overlooked glacier lakes that had come down from Everest, though with the sun out the weather was temperate. From there they limited their climb to 300m a day because of the danger of altitude sickness. They walked on a

glacier's thin veneer of rocks, ice pinnacles poking up and saw the rubbish left behind at earlier base camps.

On the final day, wearing headlamps, they started out at 2am, the temperature at minus 20.

Roped up, crampons attached, and watching out for crevasses, Andy reached the top with the help of a Sherpa who pulled him up. Celebrating his conquest, Andy opened out his trusty Normanville Bushwalkers t-shirt and waved it at the camera.

It was snowing as they made their way down past frozen waterfalls, completing their return in one day. The climb to the summit had taken them five days!

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

“They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 E have been examining the bible evidence that the Kingdom of God will be established upon earth and that it’s throne will be the restored throne of David and the Lord Jesus Christ will sit on his ancestral throne and rule from Jerusalem.

Let’s examine the bible evidence for this to add weight and testimony to the truth of this. Let us examine first of all, why it is that Jesus is described prophetically in Daniel (9:25-26) as “Messiah the Prince”.

The title “a Prince” is defined in the Webster Dictionary as “a son of the sovereign ruler”. As both the son of God and the son of David, Jesus has the right to a throne. That throne is described in the scriptures in the following way by the apostle Peter in Acts 2:29-31: “Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had

sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.” In other words God promised a son to David who should sit on his throne and as is added in 2 Samuel 7:16 “for ever”. This expression “for ever”, in the Hebrew indicates a hidden period of time which in the final book of the Bible; the Book of Revelation is revealed as the 1000 year rule of Christ on earth.

Although Jesus Christ was to be sufferer; a priest; a saviour; a conqueror; these were not the main functions of his Messiahship. This was rooted in the throne of David.

God said so in Psalm 132:11 in the following words: “The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.”

Isaiah reinforces this in his writings at chapter 9 and verse 6 “The Prince of Peace … on the throne of David and upon his kingdom” Also in Luke 1:32 “The Lord God shall give unto him (Jesus) the throne of his father David” The Throne of David was a visible institution on earth and therefore

Jesus will sit visibly on that throne.

In this position he will be “ruler in Israel” (Micah 5:2); he will reign in righteousness (Isaiah 32:1), he will be visible in his beauty (Isaiah 33:17). Kings and princes will come from afar and pay homage to him.

(Psalm 45:12; 72:11).

He will certainly not be in the background in the day of his glory for the scriptures tell us “that every eye shall see him” (Revelation 1:7) In his hands, the throne of David will be established forever. Read Psalm 45 for the picture of his kingly glory.

He will not be doing this in a corner, for Daniel the prophet tells us that “there was given unto him a kingdom, glory and dominion. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, all dominions shall serve and obey him” It is a terrible shame that most of the Christian Church have abandoned these practical teachings of the bible and turned their followers toward fables of a reward in heaven; destroying the hope of immortal life upon earth that God has intended for those who worship him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:23).

Jesus Christ said no man has ascended up to heaven (John 3:13).

In the book of Acts we read, for David has not ascended into the heavens (Acts 2:34) for David is both dead and buried (Acts 2:29). In the book of Psalms we read “The heaven, even the heavens are the LORD’s but the earth has he given to the children of men” (Psalms 115:16). This corresponds to Christ’s teaching that the meek shall inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5, compare Psalms 37:11, 22). Nowhere do you read that the meek or the saved inherit heaven or go to heaven.

In the February article we will look at the scriptures to see how the Jewish population will receive the coming of Messiah and what the scriptures have to say about their coming to grips with the realisation that their Messiah was the one they crucified nearly 2000 years ago.

GOODBYE IRELAND - HELLO ENGLAND by Rox Rosey

aturday in Dublin was the forerunner to our final days in Ireland and the subsequent departure by ferry from Dublin Bay to Holyhead towards our next destination – Wales.

After experiencing the delights of pedestrian sightseeing in Dublin, we boarded our coach for one final tour, a visit to Malanide Castle, which turned out to be nothing much out of the ordinary, having seen so many castles and ancient historical sights our interest and enthusiasm was waning.

The weather had turned cold, wet and windy so we opted to return to our hotel, have a relaxing, soaking hot bath and meet up with our fellow coach travellers and enjoy a meal in the hotel dining room. Whilst downstairs for the evening we made sure we sent a fax to rellies in Lincolnshire, advising them of our itinerary.

We rose early the next morning, looking forward to the next part of our journey.

On our entry to Dublin some seven days earlier when we crossed the River Liffy with the tide already in, apart from the water being a questionable, brown colour it was like any other river, however upon our departure for the ferry, the tide had receded revealing, the mysteries of the river bed.

There were shopping trolleys, prams, old boots, tyres, and bicycles. These items seemed to be the customary refuse that littered waterways no matter where one may be.

Our friendly group of travellers boarded the ferry at Dublin Bay and settled in for the four hour crossing of the Irish Sea to Holyhead.

Our drive through Wales included a brief stop at a village with a title, unpronounceable but, made up of 54

letters. Before departing, we took advantage of the souvenir shop and its invitation to have our passports stamped with the township’s name endorsed inside the cover. Then to Snowdonia National Park with its rugged beauty enroute to Liverpool via an hour’s stop in Chester, which was a little disappointing as the shops closed at 5pm and we would have liked to have spent more time browsing. From what we saw in the short time we were there, it would have been nice to linger, look and perhaps buy a souvenir or two.

However, we had to head for our hotel, unaware the lift was not working and we had an exhausting climb via the stairs to our fourth floor accommodation. We were not very impressed with the view, our room overlooked Lime Street railway station but, an enjoyable meal partly mellowed our objections We had been advised by our guide not to venture outside the hotel after dark unless we went in a group as our safety could not be guaranteed. We opted to heed this warning and stay inside.

It was an early start the following morning with breakfast over, into our coach and on the road again by 8am for a tour the city of Liverpool. In earlier times it was a thriving industrial city with access to port facilities on the Mersey River, easy for transportation of goods etc. However, gradually, the factories closed through competition from overseas companies with more economical and cheaper means of manufacture.

The city of Liverpool looked shoddy, grubby and tired. The housing shortage presented problems for the town fathers and planners so in their wisdom (or not),

they accepted a proposal to accommodate families employed in the factories by erecting multi-storied cement tenements, great for the housing shortage but, not architecturally ascetic.

In fact an eyesore!

However, the councils and the municipal bodies realised it had been the wrong way to go and, eventually these depressing flats were emptied and tenants rehoused but, the original, empty concrete jungles still remained as blots on the landscape (if these were depressing to us, one could imagine how they must have been for the residents) especially when the lifts were out of action –the thought of climbing to the top would have been very daunting.

Just a few bits of trivia about Liverpool before I close :Liverpool football club needs no mention.

Liverpool is the most filmed- in British city outside London.

Liverpool holds the Guinness Book of Records for being the Capital of Pop – more Liverpool artists have had number one hits than any other town. (Beatles, Eartha Kitt and Cilla Black) Liverpool is home to the Grand National.

The clock faces on the Liver Building are the biggest in the country, bigger than Big Ben Home of mecchano, dinky toys and Hornby Trains, all invented by Frank Hornby of Liverpool.

Talking Small Business Show me the money !

irstly, let me wish everyone season’s greetings. I am not very good at sending out Christmas cards, so don’t hang around your mailbox waiting.

Money, money, money . . . there, I have said it. Whether you are a huge multinational or a micro home-based business, your business relies on not only being profitable, but also having sufficient cash flow and reserves.

“Cashed-up” is a term you will often hear describing large companies as they eye off some lucrative takeover. You should also have noticed that good business opportunities go to those operators who have the funds available to take full advantage of them. In any downturn, it is also they who can whether the storm, come out in good shape and even benefit from the resulting industry cleanout.

With many business failures, the liquidators (business undertakers) are want to comment that the underlying causes are poor management skills and undercapitalization. What that means is too little money to achieve what the entrepreneur set out to do. I have three perspectives on that one.

Many great success stories have started as “pay as you go” desperate efforts from back sheds and the like. “Bootstrapping” is

what it is called in the US and it can work.

It can be unjustifiably complex and expensive to do many simple things in business. Just cast your eye over licensing and town planning requirements where complex regulatory systems are in place to control small simple issues Yes, eager and inexperienced business operators regularly underestimate how much money it takes to run a business. Mind you, so do experienced ones, big business ones, qualified ones, ones run by accountants and yes, the public sector as well.

Now, what about those looking to start out in business? What do you do if you have a great and achievable business idea, but not enough dollars to pull it off? Most importantly, do a clear and objective viability assessment to find out what you need to finance the start-up. Don’t be aggressive towards constructive criticism.

Experience shows that a point made which irritates you most, is often the fatal flaw you have missed in your enthusiasm. Don’t be afraid to review your work. So where does the money come from?

You must have some of your own capital or “hurt money” to be taken seriously. Then there are family, friends, credit cards, personal and business loans.

wilight golf has commenced at the Yankalilla Golf Club and will continue through the daylight saving period finishing the Friday before Easter. The games are played Friday evenings with hit off times between 3.30pm and 6pm.

Sometimes these arrangements require an associated arrangement with the business adviser at a Business Enterprise Centre or Regional Development Board. Irrespective, you should ensure you do a course in Starting Your Own Business (see www.southaustralia.biz) and run your plan past an experienced adviser such as Mark Heinrich.

s this is the last issue before Christmas, I would like to convey Christmas wishes and cheers from the members of the Wirrina Flotilla of The SA Sea Rescue Squadron. We hope you have a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful 2008, and safe boating during the holiday season.

We have had a very busy month with eight minor incidents and two fairly serious events with both sending out May Day calls for assistance.

I had just set foot in the door from a cruise to the South Pacific, and turned on the marine radios, when all hell broke loose. A severe storm with wind gusts in this area up to 129kph had just occurred and almost immediately the radios went into melt down mode. There was a yacht in the Maslins / Moana area losing its mast and sending out a May Day and a number of craft along the coast in trouble. We were put on stand-by as the rescue helicopter was sent to the yacht in trouble at Moana. The Surf Lifesaver jet boat was in the area and immediately responded but un- able to get near the stricken craft due to the state of the confused sea. The crew of the yacht was winched off by the helicopter and the yacht was left at anchor. It was still afloat a couple of days later, and as far as I am aware the owner was able to salvage the vessel.

The second incident occurred on Monday 12th November when a yacht travelling between North Haven and Wirrina was knocked down by a rogue wave. The battery was dislodged and severed an oil line on the diesel motor, spraying hot oil all over the cabin of the craft making it nearly impossible to walk on. This caused the skipper to take a severe fall and badly injuring himself. By this time the sea was in a boiling state and the poor skipper was getting bashed about in the oil soaked cock pit. I must add that this craft was in first class order and had all the necessary safety equipment required, and the skipper did an excellent job through out the ordeal.

By this time the skipper realised that he was in a

fair bit of trouble and he called for immediate assistance. His GPS was damaged during the knock down, and his auxiliary diesel motor had pumped it’s oil all over the cabin and was unserviceable and the yacht could not be sailed .

We soon had two boats on the ramp viz. SR5 and Sea-K. Our local Police officer Steve Cracknell was on Fork Tree hill and was able to make contact with the stricken yacht. The skipper of the yacht was able to pick up the strobe lights of the police car and was able to give us some idea of his location. When our two craft were in the general area of yacht, the skipper was requested to fire off a flare. He tried to fire off five in-date flares before one worked and finally ignited. (this was not good to hear, as flares should work first time every time.) By this time the sea was extremely angry with waves breaking over the cabin of SR5. A line was eventually put aboard and a long slow tow was commenced. The skipper of the yacht did a tremendous job in controlling his craft in his injured state throughout the tow. We could not put a crew man on board the yacht due to the terrible sea conditions. As it was impossible to see the skipper of the yacht, we had to keep calling him by radio and make sure he had not slipped over board. The conditions were pretty dreadful to say the least.

The rescue boats arrived back at the ramp and delivered the injured seaman to the local Ambos, who gave him a good check over and sent him home with his now relieved wife. I must add our local Ambos do a tremendous job and once again many thanks Jon and crew.

I must say a very special thanks to our two boat crews who ventured out in some pretty ordinary conditions. The call out commenced at 2230 hrs and finished 0300 in the morning. Well done to all Sea Rescue personnel, Local Police man, Steve Cracknell and our radio operator in Adelaide Sasi Nayar. Well done all.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB

he onset of the sailing season was delayed a week due to extremely windy conditions on the first scheduled sailing day on Sunday November 4th, but more favourable conditions the following week finally allowed the season to officially commence. 12 boats fronted up and despite a change moving through during the afternoon with freshening winds which made sailing somewhat more exciting than usual, it was a good start. Some noticeable stalwarts were missing, so it augurs well for good turnouts each week of maybe 15 plus boats.

The first winner of the season was Dave Carragher in his Sundance 14. The new ship to shore radios were used for the first time and it is good to know that additional safety measures are in place.

Club membership continues to grow and we welcome 2 new members, Ian McDonald from Normanville in his Windrush 14 catamaran and Simon Bone from Echunga in his Mosquito. This should make for some more competition and make the sailing more exciting, not to mention more attractive to the public watching from the shore. Last years dinghy champion, Dave Herraman is stepping up to a catamaran, so watch out everyone.

The Club has scored a major coup by being nominated to host the state titles for Arrows, Arafura Cadets and Yvonne Catamarans after Christmas, probably in February. Well done Steve Rogers for doing some smooth talking to the right people. We would expect to see another 25 to 30 boats participating in these competitions and it shows the popularity of this area, which is well known for its unspoilt local beaches and natural beauty. What a sight all these boats will make.

Weather permitting; we will continue sailing every Sunday until late April. New members are always welcome, so if you are at all interested in sailing, you would be most welcome to join us for a trial spin, even if you have little or no experience. It’s a great opportunity, so why not get involved early in the year? Ring either Steve Rogers on 8598 5244 or Stuart Gibbs on 8558 3399 and arrange to join us.

Wirrina Sea Rescue Squadron involved in coastal survey …

ecently the local Sea Rescue Squadron based at Wirrina was involved in a ‘rescue’ mission of a different kind! They provided the transport platform, the MV Joan Stanton rescue craft, for a sea-based survey of the coastal cliffs between Sellicks Beach and West Island to assess the status of the White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Osprey on ~90km of the Fleurieu Peninsula coastline.

The survey involved cruising slowly along cliff sections of the coastline in near calm weather conditions, enabling the cliffs to be thoroughly scanned for the bird species of interest and any obvious nest structures. The Wirrina Sea-Rescue Squadron Flotilla Commander, Paul Brown, said ‘we were delighted to get involved as it gave our crew the opportunity to become familiar with the coastline and sea conditions right through Backstairs Passage, which was new to some, and you never know when that experience may be called on in an emergency situation’. ‘An excellent training opportunity’ he said.

Both the Sea-Eagle and Osprey have recently been placed on the Endangered Species list in South Australia and according to the ornithologist running the survey, Terry Dennis from Encounter Bay, the number of breeding pairs in the region had never previously been fully assessed. ‘South Australia has only small populations of both species of only around fifty to fifty five breeding pairs, and these are found mainly in the west of the state and on Kangaroo Island’ Terry said. The Fleurieu Peninsula survey ‘was made possible through a grant from the company running Starfish Hill wind farm to

Birds SA (the South Australian Ornithological Association), which in turn allowed a generous donation to the Sea Rescue Squadron to cover the costs of the survey’ he said.

The survey results revealed no new nest sites, however three ‘extra’ White-bellied Sea-Eagles were seen from the boat between Blowhole Beach and Porpoise Head in Deep Creek Conservation Park, and a couple of days later two were seen where frequently reported near Rapid Head. ‘Probably the same birds, they could be coming across from Kangaroo Island’ Terry said, and ‘there was no sign of the Osprey which has been seen near the Myponga Beach area either, however, since the boat survey one has been seen regularly in the Onkaparinga estuary, so maybe it has moved further up the coast’.

n years gone by the faithful cows came in to be milked in rough little structures called cow sheds.

Some, indeed, preferred to call them dairies. I like the term cow shed.

There were no stainless steel vats as we know now, no milking machines with cup removers or self feeders.

Some modern dairies resemble a slow motion herdy gerdy on which the cows step on and surrender their milk as they go around.

In the old cowshed there was simply a bale for the cow to stand. A single piece of wood, hinged by a bolt was pinned against her neck. In front was the manger where some hay and grain were provided. While she munched away at the tucker the milker squatted on a three legged stool, washed her udder with some clean water and then hand squeezed the teats which sent streams of fresh warm milk into the buckets.

It was often a family affair as Mum, Dad and the kids each milked a cow – Dad having to do the kickers – sometimes tying their leg back with a leg-rope.

Morning and night for most of the year the milking had to be done. But, there was something special about sitting on those quaint little stools and resting your head into the flank of a cow and pulling away at her teats – lovely bond between man and beast!

The sounds in the shed were

something special. Music came out of the buckets as the milk streamed in.

At the start you heard, ‘dink, dink, dink.’ But, as it filled, the tones deepened and passed through tenor, alto and bass. When each milker was at a different stage the sounds blended like an orchestral chord.

Often a cat purred nearby – waiting for a drink. The filled buckets were taken to the separator where the contents were poured into the bowl above, and someone turned the handle as it was spun though a set of sleeves to emerge from two spouts as milk and cream. Turning the handle was hard going until the device gained momentum. A bell rung on each turn until the right speed had been achieved.

Separated cream– thick and deep yellow – is perfect for a pie. The whitened milk, however, deprived of its fat found its way to the stomachs of calves, pigs and maybe the cat.

Special place The cow shed became a special place when long ago it provided shelter for a poor and needy family. Every other room in town was taken. While in that shed the young woman gave birth to the most famous person who’s ever lived – Jesus Christ. She wrapped him in make-do cloths and laid him in the cow’s food box – the manger.

What incredible significance was given to the humble cow shed! It became the venue of condescension for the one of highest rank was born in this lowly place and became the wonder of mankind – one who was eternal was born into a world measured by time.

The one whose birth occurred in a cowshed and whose bed was the manger was later heard to say, ‘I came down from heaven.’

Priceless scene There were no drawings or paintings of this special place - just a few details for us to sketch onto the imagination. We can easily picture a babe in the hay in the manger – his mother looking on.

Amid all the ghastly sights and sounds that attack our senses today the crude little cowshed at Bethlehem is healthy meditation for the mind.

It’s a beautiful family scene of simplicity, humility and serenity.

It was a scene created from necessity.

Unthinkable that it’s occupants were victims of inconvenience. God was it’s author and the babe in the hay was none other than ‘Christ the Lord’, ‘Immanuel’ – ‘God with us.’

Outer Adelaide Livestock Producers Must Update Accreditation to Ensure Market Access

W

ith some 3,441 properties in the Outer Adelaide region grazing livestock, producers throughout the region are being urged to ensure their accreditation with Australia’s most significant red meat database is up to date.

Come 1 March 2008, there will be a requirement for all livestock producers using Meat & Livestock Australia’s Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) National Vendor Declarations (NVD) to be fully accredited on the LPA database.

Those livestock producers who are currently fully accredited with LPA do not need to act.

Darren Thomas of South Australia’s leading processor, T&R Pastoral said that the end of LPA provisional accreditation was an important step for the livestock industry and that checking or updating LPA accreditation was as simple as doing a quick check on the MLA website or making a call to the LPA hotline.

“The move to have everyone fully accredited under LPA will mean that the producers in Outer Adelaide can back up on paper the product integrity and safety claims that our domestic and international buyers require,” Mr Thomas said.

“Product integrity and safety is paramount to Australia’s red meat industry and local producers have an important role in protecting this $15 billion industry. Being fully accredited with LPA is the best way of demonstrating the integrity and safety of livestock,” he said.

Producers will either be accredited or not accredited with LPA after 1 March, meaning those who are fully accredited can continue to sell using LPA NVDs and will get full

competition for their products.

Those who aren’t may find the market fo r th eir livestock significantly reduced, because they won’t be permitted to use LPA NVDs from 1 March, 2008.

“The majority – over 80 percent of stock currently sold in saleyards across the country are from fully accredited properties in the LPA program. It is now time for those provisionally registered producers to upgrade their LPA accreditation to ensure we have the one consistent standard covering the entire industry,” Mr Thomas said.

There is no cost to producers to u p grad e th eir LP A status.

Livestock producers can check or upgrade their LPA status on-line at www.mla.com.au/lqs or by calling the LPA hotline on 1800 683 111.

The decision to move all Australian livestock producers to a fully accredited LPA status was made by the LPA Advisory Committee, an independent group made up of representatives from all sectors of the livestock industry, including industry leaders from the cattle, sheep, goat and dairy producer peak bodies, livestock agents, processors and lot feeders.

Provisional LPA accreditation was granted to all red meat producers in 2004, with producers updating their status to full accreditation automatically when re-ordering NVD booklets. Fully accredited producers abide by the LPA rules and standards regarding the food safety status of livesto ck.

Independent audits, both random and targeted, are conducted to ensure the ongoing integrity of the LPA program.

NORMANVILLE NEW YEARS EVE PAGEANT

ew Years Eve 2007 will be a celebration of our 10th pageant. This year there will be camel rides on the beach from 4pm. There will be live entertainment provided by Never Say Never throughout the night with celebrations beginning at foreshore at 4pm with rides, food and music. Our Pageant Glow van will be at the foreshore with a range of new and exciting glow gear for sale. The Pageant consists of a parade of approximately 40 colourful floats leaving Katherine Drive at 7.30pm sharp winding its way through the streets of Normanville ending at the beautiful Normanville foreshore at approximately 8pm. Locals and tourists alike flock to the foreshore to be entertained by a DJ, amusements, clowns etc and fed by the local community clubs and groups. The night's festivities are finalized with a fireworks display at 9.30pm. The Pageant provides a fun, safe family environment for the entire community plus the many visitors staying in the area. We would like to invite you to be a part of our Pageant, whether it be just as a visitor or as a participant, contact Mandy on 08 8558 3358 or Robyn on 08 8558 3324 if you have any queries. We have a wide range of costumes available for a small hire fee and may be able to help out with ideas for your float. The Pageant is a non-profit community organisation run by a very small group of locals, with the Yankalilla District Council providing some funding and the remaining funds required to stage the event are raised throughout the year from the community.

Please Note This year there is a total ban, (this means absolutely no water bombs, no pistols, no buckets, no hoses) or the use of any water in the parade this means both the floats and the spectators. Last year this got completely out of hand with cars, floats, music equipment water damaged and in some cases completely ruined. We have lost participants due to injury and damage - no floats no parade! We had spectators using hoses and in one case throwing frozen water bombs, could we please use some commonsense this year and have some consideration for others. This will be policed by security guards and each float will be inspected prior to the parade.

South Australian Marine Life Society of South Australia 2008 Calendar. The South Australian Marine Life Society of South Australia has produced another calendar with spectacular photographs of the state’s marine environment. A number of the photographs were taken in and near the Fleurieu Peninsula from locations including Rapid Bay Jetty, HMAS Hobart, Hallett Cove and Port Noarlunga Reef. The calendars are available for purchase from the Normanville Natural Resource Centre at a cost of $10.00 and would

make excellent Christmas presents for divers, marine enthusiasts and overseas friends and relatives.

The Normanville Natural Resource Centre has held two very successful events over recent months.

In October, Jan Forrest from the SA Museum and Butterfly Conservation SA spoke to a group of 27 community members about Butterflies, with a particular focus on establishing butterfly friendly gardens. Jan is one of the authors of a newly released book entitle Attracting Butterflies to your Garden. We have one copy remaining for sale at the Centre at a cost of $25.00. As a result of attending the talk on Yankalilla Area School student has suggested to the school that a Butterfly Garden be established. The Resource Centre was able to give the school some butterfly friendly plants in the form of Bursaria spinosa (Christmas Bush or Sweet Bursaria) to get them started.

In November, Agnes Cantin from the Conservation Council of South Australia’s Reef Watch Program gave a very informative presentation on Intertidal Monitoring which was attended by 22 people. This was followed two days later by a practical Intertidal monitoring session at the Lady Bay reef.

Agnes is hopeful that those who attended may form the basis of a regular group of volunteers to assist in collecting long term data on the health of our reef. Intertidal monitoring sessions are held one morning per month from October to April. The

Lady Bay monitoring program for the next three months includes a session on Sunday December 9th at 9.30am; Saturday January 12th at 12.00pm; Sunday February 10th at 10.30am. New volunteers are always welcome with Agnes providing all monitoring equipment and training. e y F o l k s , Still quiet on the club front with PIRSA rules regarding equine flu. There are still no reported cases in S.A. at this point. Bans have been extended until March. Our bicycle rally was a quiet one.

December rally will be at the beach. A beach picnic with cricket and swimming and dogs and fun. That's BYO food, drinks and whatever you desire for a great day at the beach. (Cookie got the day off.) That will be Dec 2nd. We will meet at "The Wall" at Lady Bay from 10am. See you all there. It’s a good chance to get to know your fellow clubbers in a relaxed atmosphere - We the

committee, are actually nice people without the stresses of trying to maintain a smooth running club. Congratulations to Sean and Tracy with their campaign for the construction of a new arena at the show grounds. We had received a grant from local council some months ago and had a few discrepancies to iron out. These are now resolved and construction will commence shortly. Thank you to the show society for their support. This is an arena for horse riding, showing cattle, and can be used by school and community for safe showing and training.

Next year (so soon??) we plan to hold a "Dog Gymkhana". We are checking on our insurance requirements as to whether we can invite the public or stay within the club. We also plan to continue with certificate training if possible. If

Furthermore we wish Christine Wenham good luck on her new job. She is in NSW working for Vicki Roycroft. he Fleurieu Peninsula has unveiled its exciting new brand which will revolutionise the region’s marketing efforts by sending one clear message to consumers.

Get into it! is the tagline and Coastal Escape the key message which will be used by Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism and local tourism operators keen to become Fleurieu Peninsula Brand Ambassadors.

Unveiled at a breakfast this morning, the brand was developed following the publication of the Fleurieu Peninsula Regional Integrated Tourism Strategic Plan 2007–2012 which identified the need for a brand policy to ensure consistency when marketing the region both locally and overseas.

“This brand is more than a tagline. It includes pictures and messages that will help tourists to understand what they can see and do in the Fleurieu Peninsula, putting us on the shopping list of travellers throughout the world,” Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Marketing Manager Roz Becker says.

“It’s a brand that we invite all tourism operators to use, helping us to secure the region’s position as one of Australia’s premier tourism destinations by becoming brand ambassadors.

“The Fleurieu Peninsula has so much to offer holidaymakers yet this amazing choice to some extent has been our Achilles’ heel, confusing consumers by sending too many messages that have prevented them from developing a strong understanding of the region. This is set to change with the new brand focussing on our strengths

and targeting ‘activity seekers’, an audience which research clearly shows we have the best chance of reaching.”

Surrounded by the ocean, the coast will play a major role in the Fleurieu Peninsula’s marketing efforts, used in all material to promote the region.

“This is a cornerstone of our brand. Wherever you are in the Fleurieu Peninsula you are never far away from the coast and marketing this will help consumers to understand the region,” Ms Becker says. “For example, when we talk about our award-winning wines we might talk about the Mediterranean climate and gentle sea breezes which help create the right conditions, reinforcing our reputation as a coastal escape.”

Ms Becker said that while activity seekers would be the primary target audience, other groups such as families and the time-poor would also be targeted.

“By consolidating our messages and marketing efforts we can reach a greater audience with material that resonates. We urge all Fleurieu Peninsula tourism operators to jump on board and help us spread our new brand far and wide.”

hristmas cards have arrived in our shops and in various catalogues. I get the impression that less than half have anything representing the religious event we all celebrate on Christmas Day. Not one of these depicts the reality of the birth of the Christchild. The cards show the Baby and His parents dressed in clean clothes; in some instances almost as though they have new clothing on. The place where Jesus was born is brightly lit.

We have no evidence of the place

where Jesus was born. However, in a TV series, ‘Son of God’, a few years ago, researchers told us that they now believed that Jesus was born in a cave with two levels; the upper level for the family and the lower level for the animals. People still live that way today in some parts of Israel. That family living area could well have been crowded with others coming for the census as Mary and Joseph were. So the Holy Family had to make do with the lower level among the animals. They were

among the sweat and the acrid smells and the dung we all know are to be found where animals are housed. I cannot imagine it being a clean environment. Perhaps it was warm from the animals housed there, but comfortable and clean? It was just not possible.

We have done our level best through the ages to romanticise the birth of Jesus and, even, His death. But that’s another story.

The reality of the birth of Jesus is that He was born as any human is born. Yet He had no earthly

father. This is truly and wonderfully miraculous. This was no heavenly creature mysteriously projected into Bethlehem some 2000 years ago. Jesus didn’t come floating down on a cloud, clothed in white and bathed with light. He was born just as any other baby in those times, whose mother had to travel. Mary and Joseph accepted whatever space was available and which provided them some shelter.

Jesus came to us as Son of God and completely human. He ate and cried as we do. He was subjected to all the joys and tragedies, highs and lows that you and I experience. God, in fact, has experienced our life. God, in Christ, has been here and walked life’s journey and felt its pain and its death. God knows what it feels like to be a refugee; to be poor, disadvantaged, tired, and, finally, to die alone and abandoned. What God did was to show us that the life and death of Jesus can lead us to a courageous and free and loving way to live.

We all must be careful not to let the mode rn tra ppi n gs of Christmas and the commercial exercise seduce us. Don’t get me wrong, I like the cards, the contacts with friends, the shared meal. But it so easy to lose sight of the fact that the very first Christmas was a preamble to Jesus’ short life; very human, complicated, full of risk and stressful yet providing the world with absolutely the best model of a life lived in the fullest way. May God bless you all with his peace and comfort this Christmas.

NORMANVILLE SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB

he 2007/2008 surf season opened on Saturday 3/11/07 as clubs throughout Australia prepared to patrol and make safe the beaches for the general public.

At Normanville patrols commenced at 1pm and the event was celebrated in fine style with a band and bbq.

Even though the weather was pretty awful it was a great day and the band Black Knight was fantastic.

After patrols the festivities continued with a casual dinner and more music. All in all it was a great day and the club was very pleased with the support that it received so thank you Normanville.

Also special thanks to the new bronze squad of 10 who will begin training this season, and we would also like to welcome our 2007/08 Nipper squad.

The club is also currently participating in surf skills” instruction with the Yankalilla Area school which involves swimming, surf craft and beach activities. Approximately 30 students are taking part.

The patrol on 10/11/07 saw some intense activity with the sighting ,off Lady Bay, of 3 bronze whaler sharks by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Contact was made with Normanville patrol, and surveillance coordinated with the helicopter rescue service. Additional surveillance was placed on the jetty and beach while members of the public outside the patrolled area were contacted by the club’s mobile patrol.

No further incident occurred.

Beach works by the Yankalilla Council have begun in front of the club and discussions are being held about the provision of a ramp to facilitate easier access to the beach. The club is also in active discussion with the Yankalilla Council regarding disability access to the club and it seems that this too is getting closer. We’ll keep you posted on progress in these regards.

Junior Surf Carnival Also, just a reminder about the Junior Carnival coming up on Sunday 16 December, commencing at 8:30am.

This will be a big weekend for Normanville with hundreds of young competitors and their families expected to begin arriving on the Friday night prior to the carnival.

The club will be open on Friday night as usual with meals provided by the Normanville Beach Café. On Saturday 15 December the club will be open from 11:00am with a barbeque offered during the day and live entertainment for those of you who wish to come along in the evening. On Sunday 16 December the club will again open at 11:00am. Catering on this day, will be provided by the local LIONS and Rotary Clubs, the Yankalilla Football Club and the CWA, with food available from breakfast onwards, on the lawned area in front of the beach car park.

EVERYBODY IS WELCOME TO COME ALONG at any time over the weekend.

Community Information Regarding the Carnival The Surf Carnival will attract a lot of people into the community over this weekend, so it is possible that parking will be an issue. Competitors cars, particularly on the Sunday, are likely to be parked all along Jetty Road and other roads in close proximity to the beach. The Club hopes that residents, particularly those of you who live close to the beach will not be too inconvenienced by this. In fact we hope that you will come along, have a drink and something to eat while you watch the spectacle and join in the fun.

The areas on the beach that are being used for the carnival will stretch from the boat ramp to just north of the Normanville Surf Lifesaving Club.

Normal use of the boat ramp, and launching south of the ramp, should not be inconvenienced.

Access to the beach will be slightly affected however, beach access to the public will be clear on the day, with the usual patrol tent and patrolled area for public swimming set up just north of the Club. So if you feel like coming down for a swim, or walk or just to sit on the beach and watch the carnival you are welcome to do just that. We hope to see you all there.

The beach will be divided up into five competition areas for the day. Two water areas will be set up on either side of the jetty, 60m wide and extending 120m into the sea. A sprint track will also operate along the beach from the boat ramp to near the jetty (approximately 70m). This will be a big day for our community and for the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club and the Club will make every

It offers everyone in a community a chance to participate in the fight against cancer. After registering and achieving their fundraising goal, teams of 10 to 15 people camp overnight at a nominated venue, usually a local oval, and take turns keeping a baton moving around a track or path.

Relays are an 18 – 20 hour overnight event and each team is asked to have a team member on the track at all times during the event to keep the baton moving out of respect for those people living with cancer day and night. And of course the event is complete with live entertainment, free breakfasts, spot prizes and more.

Relay for Life is a vital source of income for The Cancer Council South Australia – so every dollar raised is helping the fight against cancer. Every step taken is a step closer to a cancer free future.

Relay for Life was started by the American Cancer Society in 1985, and has now developed into the worlds biggest fundraising event.

The inaugural South Australian Relay for Life was held in Adelaide in 2001 and now there are also 14 regional venues with new venues being introduced each year.

Why become a Relayer?

As an individual, sometimes it’s hard to feel as though you can make a difference. But as a team you can achieve great success in your fundraising.

You are not only raising money to find a cure for cancer but you are also raising community awareness of cancer. Advocacy is an important tool in the quest for a cancer free future. The power of Relay is that it allows a community to grieve for those lost to cancer and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived

effort to ensure that nobody is inconvenienced.

Finally, another big night at the Club will be New Year’s Eve when we will once again be hosting a karaoke night. Come along dressed as your favourite singer or rock star. Everybody is welcome to join in the fun. We are hoping to be able to come to an agreement with management at the Links Lady Bay Grand Mercure to share their courtesy bus to provide safe transport between some of our local venues on the night.

What’s Happening in January As I said earlier the weather on our beach party day was pretty awful, but we’re going to do it again! On Saturday 19th January the club will be open from 11am. There will be a sausage sizzle and for those of you who missed Black Night they will be back. The band will be performing on the balcony of the clubrooms between 3pm and 6pm.

Everybody is welcome. Don’t miss this fantastic young band. Flyers will be put up on our Notice Board and around the district to remind you.

Local pharmacy selected as part of trial for new service

J

ohn Jelfs Normanville Chemist is involved in a trial program to assess which community-based patients may benefit most from a pharmacy service that is currently used to assist people manage their medicines – dose administration aids.

Every year almost 140,000 people are hospitalised due to medication misadventure. It has been found that up to 69% of hospitalisations could have been avoided if the consumer had greater support in managing their medicines.

Dose Administration Aids have been found to assist with medicine management. They have also been found to reduce

hospitalisations both from medicine misadventure and adverse-effects of medicines. This in turn provides improved health outcomes and better quality of life.

“We are excited to be involved with this national program as we feel that the delivery of Dose Administration Aids is an important service we can deliver to the people of John Jelfs Normanville Chemist ”, said John Jelfs , Proprietor of John Jelfs Normanville Chemist .

Dose Administration Aids are disposable packets that hold up to a week’s worth of medicines in tamper evident sealed compartments. The pharmacist fills these packets for an individual patient and includes identification of the patient and the medicines to avoid any mixups.

AWARDS FOR FLEURIEU PENINSULA TOURISM OPERATORS

hree Fleurieu Peninsula tourism operators and a statewide tourism campaign won major awards at the 2007 South Australian Tourism Awards. The Goolwa Visitor Information Centre won the Visitor Information & Services category, Surf & Sun won the Tour and/ or Transport operator award and Narnu Fa rm took out the Standard Accommodation category for the second year in a row, while the Recharge on the Murray marketing campaign (a joint initiative between Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism, Murraylands Tourism & Riverland Tourism Marketing) won the Tourism Marketing award.

More than 500 people from the tourism industry attended the black tie event,

which saw winners crowned during a gala dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Overall, 27 awards were presented to tourism businesses and individuals judged to be the most outstanding in each category.

Red Poles, Alexandrina Cheese Company, South Coast Surf Academy, Waterside Restaurant at Whalers Inn, Normanville Beach Café, Bellevue Bed & Breakfast, Goolwa Heritage Cottages, Mt Bold Estate and Brooklands Heritage Bed & Breakfast also received medals for the quality of their entries.

The awards are judged in accordance with a strict set of rules and criteria, and major category winners will represent

the State at the Australian Tourism Awards in February 2007, to be held in Canberra at the National Convention Centre.
