ankalilla Landscaping & Gardening Centre is now a fully accredited Garden Centre through the Nursery & Garden Industry of Australia. One of only twelve accredited Garden Centres in S ou t h A u st r al i a, Y an k al i l l a Landscaping & Gardening Centre has undertaken an exhaustive assessment process during the last

twelve months to ensure all criteria have been met.

The Australian Garden Centre Accreditation Scheme is a national, industry managed scheme designed to raise the overall standards of Garden Centre retailing throughout Australia.

Specifically, the Accreditation guarantees the quality of products on

offer, acknowledges the experience and customer service provided by staff and acknowledges the quality of the Garden Centre premises.

Jim Girdler, Business Development Manager for the Nursery & Garden Industry South Australia Inc, said he congratulated Yankalilla Landscaping & Gardening Centre on their accreditation, as they had easily fulfilled all qualification criteria.

The business was established over 20 years ago and has developed with the ongoing population growth of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Jane Hyde, a qualified horticulturalist and manager of the Garden Centre, said “We offer expert advice on plant selection irrigation systems, fertili zer requirements and provide a full range of mulches and soils.”

The Landscaping Division works in conjunction with the Garden Centre and employs local tradesmen specializing in the building of retaining wall, landscape design, irrigation systems, bobcat hire,

paving, Stratco Outback Verandahs and all types of fencing.

i everyone!

Just as we thought we were nearly finished, stuff kept coming in to be included. It therefore took a few extra days to complete and so we missed the start of the month! Oops, sorry ‘bout that!

Along with the pre-Christmas influx we also had some rearrangements within the Yank News team itself - adding to the chaos.

At the same time we had an avalanche of Christmas stock to process in the Normanville Newsagency for our big Christmas Sale.

Come in and have a look and you’ll see what I mean!

Annie has commenced a new administration job, Monday to Friday at Clubs SA in Adelaide and as a result has only been able to work on the YRN on weekends and evenings.

Annie will continue to be a part of the YRN team along with Heather Jelfs who has returned to the team. Between both Annie and Heather we will continue to provide our advertisers and contributors with the same high standard of customer service.

he Yankalilla Soccer club is winding up for the year with the last training to be held on Friday the 1st of December.

Training will commence early in the new year with dates to be advised. The Constitution has been drawn up and the grant application has been sent. The club still has a lot of work to do but the future is looking bright. Committee members would like to thank all families for their ongoing support and wish everyone safe and happy holidays.

Our preferred way of receiving your adverts and articles is in a computer file, either by email as our first preference or saved on disc.

If you have any queries before placing your advert or article, please email us on yanknews@normanville-news.com.au or yankalillanews@normanville.biz, if this is not possible by phone on 8558 3446 extension 6. If the office is unattended a detailed message can be left with your instructions or enquiry.

If supplying information as computer files is not possible, please submit it in an easy to read, clear format, either hand delivered, by post or fax. Please note that items being delivered by hand via the newsagency will be passed on to the Yankalilla Regional News staff. Please note, the newsagency staff are unable to help with any details on costs etc., as they are not trained in this area.

File Formats We work with Microsoft Word, Publisher, Adobe Photoshop and most common office programmes. Good quality images and logos are preferred as files in JPEG or TIFF formats.

If all of this seems a bit overwhelming just remember to keep it simple. We just need to know how much you wish to spend on your advertisement as this helps determine the size; all the details you wish included along with any logos you already have & how many editions you wish to be in. If you haven’t already got an advertising agent don’t worry, we have a graphic designer ready to take your details and turn them into a professionally designed advertisement. For those articles being handwritten we do have an administration team to take care of this for you if necessary whilst remembering that email is a preferred option.

ur meeting on November 2nd was International Day. We started the day as usual with a short business meeting. Instead of craft after the meeting, we got the hall ready to receive our guests. The country of study for this year is Denmark. Most of our members had made lovely informative posters about Denmark.

Miniature scenes of Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales were displayed. Our guests from the other Cundell Group branches arrived and we had a very tasty and varied lunch.

After lunch the entertainment was made up of quizzes, skits, poems etc. The collection for "pennies for friendship" was made by voting with coins for the poster that you thought the best. Having the posters to look at and vote for gave our visitors something to do, while our members washed up etc. Finishing the day with afternoon tea and Danish biscuits.

Our December 7th meeting will be morning tea at Ross Roses, lunch at the Mick O'Shea's and afternoon at a nursery in McLaren Vale.

I

t is amazing how much we can learn by listening to a speaker at the Ladies Probus meetings; for example at our last meeting we found out the difference between a moth and a butterfly. Mr Roy Brooks, who was our speaker at the last meeting, enlightened us. It seems that a butterfly’s antennae is clubbed and a moth’s is feathered. Entomology is the study of insects of which Lepidoptera covers winged insects including moths and butterflies Roy became interested in butterflies when he was in the RAAF and stationed in Butterfield in Malaysia. He went on holiday with his family to the Cameron Highlands, where he became fascinated with butterflies. His next posting was to Papua New Guinea, which also has spectacular butterflies. The life cycle of the butterfly contains 4 stages; eggs, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis) and finally the adult. Each stage looks very different. The largest butterfly in the world is the Queen Alexander Bird Wing, which is 25cms long and is found in PNG and the Solomon Islands. The smallest is the tiny blue Zizula Hylax, which is only 1.5 cm. Butterflies protect themselves in some ingenious ways; the South African Swallow Tail grows horns.

Butterflies can be bought usually as paper specimens, which can cause trouble at the customs because the specimens do look strange.

Queensland uses the Dunk Island Blue as it’s emblem for tourism and there is a wonderful butterfly farm in Kuranda. The bright turquoise Blue Triangle is used by the post office on the aerogramme. There are 10,000 known species of butterflies in SA. Because of the great diversity there is a need for classification .The butterflies are divided into 15 family groups. There are 6 zoogeographic regions. Butterflies are found throughout the world. On mountaintops, at the North and South Poles, some live in deserts and others in hot forests. They migrate to spend the winter in warmer climates. The painted lady butterfly migrates thousands of miles Roy showed slides of various butterflies and also brought an example of a paper specimen. His framed displays were for sale. There are restrictions on the sale of a number of butterflies now because some of the species are endangered.

However there are certain parts of the world where the natives grow particular plants to attract different types of butterflies, which are for sale.

CAPE JERVIS COMMUNITY CLUB NEWS

T

he AGM brought in a new and enthusiastic Committee, one of the first tasks of which is to prepare for the Christmas party/dinner on Saturday 16th December. There will be a traditional Christmas Dinner and Father Christmas will surely be visiting. Last year’s event was an enormous success so expectations are high for this year.

In the meantime a hard-working team is preparing for a busy time of busloads of guests for luncheons at the Club between now and Christmas.

The Club will be closed from 17th December and re-open for New Year’s Eve on Sunday 31stDecember. The Old Year will be seen out from 8.00pm with the bar open and a sausage sizzle available during the evening until the arrival of the New Year. The dance floor will be uncovered so bring along your favourite dance music. During January the Club will be open for business as usual, Thursday evenings for a social evening and snacks and Saturday evenings for dinner.

rank Midgley, a long time local resident, of Yankalilla and Speedway historian for almost 55 years was presented with a trophy for his “Outstanding Contribution to Speedway”. The presentation by the SRA (Speedway Riders Assoc) took place at the “Classic Speedway meeting” at Murray Bridge recently Franks comments; “This was totally unexpected I am very proud to accept this fine tribute for my work. Thank you all”. If you are interested in Speedway, just ask Frank. He has been a Photographer/Journalist all of that time His knowledge goes right back to before “Rowley Park days” He writes for many Speedway Magazines all over the World.

AMERICAN GM DRIVERS CLUB

n Sunday 22nd October 06 the American GM Drivers Club visited Normanville and Cape Jervis district on one of their day cruises, showing off these magnificent vehicles and also promoting the “All American Day” car show. The club was formed in 1978 by a handful of enthusiasts of American vehicles and has several events during the calendar year, which includes both day and night cruises and weekends away, however the most important event for this club is the “All American Day Car Show”. This event has been held every year since 1986 on the third Sunday in February. The day attracts approximately 500 vehicles on

display and as from two years ago, has been “free entry” for entrants with American cars and motorcycles. The show is staged solely by the club members with no sponsorship. On 18th February 07 the ALL AMERICAN DAY car show will be held at Immanuel College, Morphett Rd, Novar Gardens and will be celebrating 40 years of the “Camaro” and “Firebird”. L E T T E R S While-away Winter on a World Tour

Winter isn't usually our favourite season - cold, dull, grey days with only a few hours of sunlight darkens the mood.

But this year our spirits were brightened with the opportunity to join a "World Tour" courtesy of the Normanville Beach Cafe.

From June until November we were tempted by culinary delights, tantalising cocktails and gourmet beers from around the globe - Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Indian, Jamaican, Greek, Spanish, French, Asian, Hawaiian and home sweet home seafood. Yum - what a delight!

At every stage of the "Tour" the cafe transported us visually to the country of the cuisine decorated to the hilt with Tina, Claire and Anna bravely in full costume. We were also enter tained b y fab ulo us costumes worn by our fellow diners - Paul Jelfs and friends took most of the prizes throughout the year - very creative! (If you get a chance ask Paul about his "French" costume next time you see him what a laugh!).

So, to James, Kylie and helpers in the kitchen - thanks for exploring the globe and creating some delightful cuisine - the Spanish, French and surprisingly Japanese rate as our favourites.

Tina, Anna and Claire - thanks for the great service, glorious cocktails and daring costumes (the French night - ooh la la!!).

And, thanks for allowing us to souvenir tokens at every stage see photo attached which also includes a memento T-shirt that we were given on the final night.

And, to Tina in particular thanks for taking the risk to do something different.

My extroverted front of house staff, Claire and Anna are saddened, no more dressing up, thank you and I hope you will one day forgive me for making you wear those outlandish (sometimes small) costumes! Thank you Brooke for always putting in so much effort with decorating the café, she even used a Lilla’s staff members corset to decorate on French night, no names mentioned.

You all know Flynn; he’s the big black dog. Flynn’s mum and dad (Cheryl and Gary) had saved enough money to build a shed, but they decided to attend all of our theme nights instead.

Thank you guys, this support is just unbelievable, I hope there were lots of memorable moments, (we certainly have some of you, Gary) and you can start saving for your shed again now.

Did you get down to the foreshore on Sunday the 5th of November? Jazz by the sea, the band ‘Bobcats’ was fabulous.

They did a great job, no complaints of the wind or even

when the helicopter landed next door to say hi to the surf lifesavers.

What an atmosphere! Horse riding on one side of the jetty, helicopter and Surf life savers on the other side, dolphins in the water and

jazz on the lawn, Normanville is the place to be, it doesn’t get any better than this. If you were there and you enjoyed the day and would like to see more of it, council would love to hear from you!

e have had a good year with our fund raising and thank all those who have given their support, however, we are in urgent need of more people to help us in our work. The money we raise is used for the purchase of training equipment, uniforms etc, we need to keep our excellent team of St John volunteers properly equipped and up to date. Birthday Party took the place of our November meeting.

Yankalilla CWA, which was formed in 1936, celebrated their 70th Birthday at the Yankalilla Senior Citizens Complex on Wednesday 1st November. 44 people attended the luncheon. 23 members of the Victor Harbor CWA Choir provided the afternoons entertainment. After, President Glenda Oats welcomed everyone, including Group President, Trenna Eatts and Group Officers, Link Branch, Clapham, past members and current members. Mayor Peter Whitford, welcomed visitors to the Council area. Secretary, Cathy Reid, gave apologies for the day, including many past members and the State President, Mary Shattock, who had to attend a meeting in Melbourne, regarding allocation of monies for the drought relief. Cathy presented an orchid spray to our Mayoress, Madge, Group Officers, our Foundation Member, Heather Pile and our Life Members, Merna Lyddon and Myrtle Bartlett. After Edna Stevens said grace, all present enjoyed a smorgasbord lunch followed by the History of the Yankalilla Branch, read by Foundation Member, Heather Pile.

Birthday wishes were extended to members, Naida March and Maureen Stone and Life Members, Merna Lyddon and Myrtle Bartlett. The 70th Birthday cake, which was made by Heather Pile and decorated by Maureen Stone, this was cut by Group President, Trenna Eatts. Heather Pile, our Foundation Member, lit the candles and Myrtle Bartlett, a Life Member, fanned out the candles.

The Victor Harbor CWA Choir, led by Margaret Lush, presented several brackets of excellent entertainment, concluding with the

Song of Peace. An expression of thanks and gift was given to the Choir by Vice President, Shirley Jones. The Birthday Cake was then shared over afternoon tea and past and present members enjoyed fellowship during this time. The Yankalilla Branch, being the oldest branch in Cundell Group, meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 1.30pm, at the clubrooms and welcomes new members at any time. Our

Handicraft group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 1.30 pm, at the club rooms and also welcomes anyone who would enjoy doing any crafts. Our next meeting on December 6th will follow our Christmas Lunch at 12 noon. On November 17th, members will supply Devonshire morning tea to the Classic Car Rally, being held on the Yankalilla Oval.

These calendars, which have Local Government support, are a wonderful photographic pictorial of the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula and a great promotion for the district. A spokesperson

hirteen year old motocross rider Daniel Banks of Yankalilla had one of his best results on Sunday 12/11/06 winning the 12 – under 16 85cc South Coast Motocross Club, Champion of Champions, also that day Daniel stepped up to the 13 – under 16yrs 125cc class for the first time and came away with a convincing 1st Moto victory, followed up with a hard fought 3rd in the 2nd Moto.

With missing more than half the season due to injury he returned to racing in September with wins at Gillman, Fleurieu Championships, Kadina, Kimba, Millicent & Mt Gambier and looks forward to a successful 07 season. Delamere Uniting Church celebrates 148 years.

he Uniting Church chapel at Delamere would have to be one of the loveliest in the State.

Situated in a picturesque valley between two creeks and sheltered by tall English trees it has welcomed folk to its pews for the last 148 years to worship God and hear the gospel.

It was a happy occasion with lusty singing of songs and hymns. The choir sang How Great thou art and Great is Thy Faithfulness and closed the service with God be with you 'till we meet again.

'Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever,' was the theme text of the guest preacher, John Hutchinson who follows his

father and grandfather as a lay preacher at Delamere.

Following the service folk shared fellowship over a delightful morning tea and a birthday cake.

RED HAT LEAFY SEA DRAGON GOES WEST

F

or the first time ever, a Red Hat Convention was held in Australia early in November - in Perth in fact. They were a brave lot to take on such an event and the Perth populace appeared both astonished and delighted. Imagine the scene on a busy Saturday morning in the heart of the city as shoppers heard the first sounds of the approaching long line of stunning colour. The

roads had been closed off and a police escort led a motley crew of fantastically and very colourfully dressed and cavorting young men and women, rending the air with thrilling Japanese type drumming. That got their attention! But wow! What followed had them riveted. In a long snaking line behind them were about 450 women, 250 attending the convention itself and others flocking in for the parade. Most in their 60s and older, we made a brilliant ribbon-like splash in our purple outfits and red hats. We carried our banners ("Leafy Sea Dragons, Yankalilla" bobbing along there too) and we sang our song (sort of made up on the spot without much melody and very repetitive words) and happily answered the curious who popped out from the kerbside watchers to ask what we were about. The Lord Mayor of Perth awaited us, as did a plethora of entertainment in Forest Place for all to enjoy, red hatter or not.

We're a noisy lot and no entertainer went unheralded. Perth knew we had arrived and, true to our red hatter intention, we made it clear that we wanted to be noticed. There is much to remember over that weekend like the pyjama party breakfast, (I never knew so many people went to bed in purple and red), the glamour dinner (I swear I saw several Dame Edna’s there!) with entertainment from some good singers and a large bouncy Tessie O'Shea type comedienne. There was a concert in which several chapters performed (including Yankalilla), a cheerful go-to-it talk by fashion guru, Liz Davenport, a bush dance, good food throughout and, of course, lots of good natured natter. If you are a woman and over fifty you can

n October I wrote to this publication of the inaction in protecting life and limb, and the delicate landscape from 4WD dopes driving up Haycock Point. On 24 February 2004 the Council had undertaken to install a log barrier to prevent damage to the fragile hill, enjoyed by virtually ever visitor and resident alike, and to prevent the tragedy of someone being run down.

No doubt only as a result of the power of the press, we got a log but one in the form of a bureaucrat who decided the back flip “solution” was to put a single sign almost at the top of the hill, saying “No Vehicles” so high up that no 4WD driver would notice it until he or she was half way up the hill!

Or does our council mean to imply 4WDs are allowed to drive up the hill to the point of the sign then turn around and go back down?

For goodness sake it was just a permapine post or two that you agreed to. What we got was a misplaced sign, which only compounds the negligence.

It’s time this Council woke up to the fact that the Carrickalinga Ward is their cash cow that occasionally needs to be tended. It milks more from each Carrickalinga property than Double Bay and look what we get for it! We have no kerbside recycling, the smallest bins in the country, which we had to buy, few footpaths and no services comparable to the rate take and certainly no log barriers.

Council and councillors wake up before the populous looks at your ‘log’ of achievements. It time you got rid of the “log jam” in council services.

n Thursday 5th October my poor old Mum passed away at the Yankalilla Aged Care Centre, the place she wanted to be to spend her last days. She was originally Gwenda Grosvenor from Victor and she wanted to be here because it is a beautiful place and to be near me as I have settled here happily after many years ‘on the wallaby’ as a remote area nurse.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the fantastic Care Workers, Nurses and GPs who tended to Mum with great care and dignity. The staff are among the best people I have come across in all my 38

South Shores

have been a visitor to the Fleurieu Peninsula for the past 40 years. Not everyone admires the new South Shores Development it is true, but that aside the situation, which I came by accident to learn of a week or two ago, does upset me. Some committed contractors that have worked there since it started have either left or are close to leaving because they have had to beg for their money. One contractor has had to withdraw his services three times until receiving payment. Another is still battling to be paid his money from last December 2005. I was told that in your October issue Mr Jamie McClurg, Managing Director of Commercial and General said that “the Project” was a fully funded initiative, so why the payment delays? It seems that B & G Britcher and many others of the Beachside Village Estate are treated the same way as the contractors have been treated and that is with arrogance and contempt. From what Yvonne Stone of Normanville tells us Mike Hill has worked very hard and against great odds to reach his goals so far. Mr McClurg would also be working hard to make sure his South Shores Development is successful. It seems to me, Beachside Village residents and Contractors, forget wasting your time speaking to the Site Manager and bring all your ridiculous problems to the attention of Mr McClurg or even Mike Hill who would have a vested interest in this area and the goings on. It should be of the utmost importance to have the Locals onside and their support. Failing this, contact Occupational Health and Safety as dust and noise, they can enforce the control of.

he Cape Jervis and Delamere Progress Association has announced a competition to find a logo for the Southern-most tip of the Fleurieu.

At its regular November meeting, the Association resolved to offer a $50 prize for a logo representing life and the attractions of the tip of the Southern Fleurieu, as it comprises Delamere and Cape Jervis.

The purpose of the logo would be to identify the community in its dealings with visitors, tourists and in the promotion of the area, letter heads, brochures, memberships, notices, community projects, tree plantings

etc. By this means it will serve to create an image of the Association and its involvement in community life.

Ideas and sketches are sought from the general adult community as well as youth and school aged children.

Entries are to be sent to the Association Secretary PO Box 34 DELAMERE 5204 by the 15 th January 2007. All entries will be displayed at the Association’s AGM to be held on that date, and, be published in the February issue of the Cape Courier, prior to a winner being announced.

SECOND VALLEY CAROLS 15th Anniversary plus 1!

he Second Valley Christmas Eve Carols, as they were originally named, started on Christmas Eve in l991 and it is only in the last couple of years, to a large degree because Christmas Day has been on a weekend that the timing has varied. It developed as a reminder that although presents and good cheer are wo n d erfu l accompanists to Christmas, there is

W

much more to it than that and lay speakers each year give a very short address on this theme as part of the programme. Over 120 people attend, many of them regulars. A major attraction has been the children who dress up as Mary, Joseph, kings, shepherds and angels to form the Nativity scene, and sing "Away in a manger". Margaret Lush has been the choir leader since 1992 and a feature of the choirs programme has been the Cornish Carols. In by far the larger part of

the singing however members of the audience are encouraged to participate and the programme includes most of the well-known carols. The nine lessons have been slightly edited but they follow the sequence of the Christmas story and are read by young people from the district. The music has been provided by a number of pianists.

Ken Willsmore, Terrie Cole, Joan Heath, and for the last two years by Trish Oswald. Other musicians involved have been Ross Ford on

the trumpet, Jo Lush on the flute, and Emma McFadyen with the young people, on the piano. We are very fortunate to have such talented musicians in the district, and willing to spend their time assisting us in this way. The formula seems to have worked over the years and the audience does not appear to want change. This year it is to be held on Friday 22 December, 7-8 p.m. as usual in the Second Valley Memorial Hall.

YANKALILLA BOWLING CLUB

ith Christmas fast approaching, pennant bowls come to a mid season recess on 16th December resuming on Saturday 13 th January 2007. All three Yankalilla teams Red 1 & 2 and white 1 are prominent in the association placing’s as well as one group helping out Myponga on a weekly basis. Although pennant recess commences 16th December there is still plenty of activity to be had with handicap singles, championship singles and pairs to

occupy bowlers thirst. Also Friday night teas on 8th December and our Christmas dinner to be held in the clubrooms on Monday 11 t h December. A very important time to earmark early in 2007 is the 3 day carnival organised by John Stone with assistance from club selectors. This carnival is to be held here commencing Monday 8th January through to Wednesday 10th.

Among “stars” attending this carnival include Peter Stone and President “Happy” from Pt

Victoria, David Bennett from Frances (Sth East), Gary Cooper (Adelaide Red), Kevin Scanlon (Edwardstown) and chairman of selectors Malcolm Noble has his big guns coming from Ascot Park along with many other kindred clubs participating. On the lady bowlers front, region 7 and KI played Round Robin on 14th November and Southern Association won the Lorna Rowley Shield with our club being represented by Val Bartlett, Bev

Bowyer and Thelma Andersen. In December Champion of Champions 4’s will be staged at our club on 5th, 12th, 14th & 15th with competition coming from far and wide. At this stage of pennants the ladies Division 1 & 2 are going OK but one of the divisions need a big lift!

CHRISTMAS TREE EXHIBITION

he annual Christmas Tree Exhibition will be held on Saturday 16th December, 10am - 10pm, and Sunday 17th December, 10am - 4pm, in the Victor Harbor Town Hall. More than 43 entries will comprise not only Christmas Trees, but also wall hangings. Nativity scenes and table place settings. Father Christmas will be in attendance with lollies for the kids, there win be a superb raffle, a trading table, Christmas music, card making, and refreshments with mince pies. The "Visions of the Fleurieu" calendar will also be on sale. Entry is by gold coin donation with all proceeds to the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group, organisers of the Exhibition. CHRISTMAS AT AUNTY'S

he Second World War had been raging for some years now and little Johnnie could not remember a world without barbed wire, gasmasks and siren suits. Johnnie was only five and his sister Emily one year older.

The two children, with their Mother, were staying with their aunt Alice on the South coast of England. Aunt Alice lived in a bungalow at Seaford in Sussex, she was Mother's favourite sister but Mother missed Father a great deal. Father was a soldier and fighting in France; Johnnie had a set of tin soldiers and could set up make believe battles imagining how his father fought. Johnnie and Emily were very excited at the thought of Father Christmas's expected visit that night.

Mother knew how they felt and let them stay up later than usual, besides there was work to do. Each child asked Aunt Alice to pin one of their stockings to the end of their beds, this she did gladly. Mother made each of them a warm cup of cocoa and gave them a biscuit before they went to bed. They were sitting in front of a huge open fire in the sitting room and Mother said: "Don't forget Father Christmas loves mince-pies and I expect he would like a glass of sherry, are you going to put them out for him?" "Oh yes," the children chimed. Aunt Alice fetched the goodies from the kitchen and the children carefully placed them on a small table near the fireplace and a big armchair. Johnnie and Emily climbed into their beds then listened to their mother reading a Christmas story about a man named Scrooge. They were very comfortable and soon fell asleep. Johnnie was dreaming about his father and started to awaken. Emily was still sound asleep. Johnnie thought he heard a little noise and opened one eye. "My

goodness," he said, "It's morning! I'm sure it is!" He padded across to the window, pulled the curtain aside and there it was, brilliant!

The snow was piled high across the back garden and gleamed and twinkled in the strong light. "Emily, Em" he cried "wake up, it's morning, let's open our presents; yes, my stocking is fat." Emily rubbed her eyes, she still felt surprisingly tired. "Presents now?" she said. "Yes," he said "it's morning; look outside." She looked quickly, then at her stocking- "What I really want for Christmas is to see my Daddy," she said.

"But we can't Em," said Johnnie, "he's fighting the Germans." "Oh no he isn't" a booming voice said as the door was opened.

"My little children come here." He hugged them to him. "It's so good to see you but it's very early, you know, only five o'clock." "But Dad, I looked out of the window and it was light" Johnnie said. "That's because there is a full moon and the snow is shining," his father said. "Now go back to bed and even if you can't sleep, lie quietly. I will be with you all day. I have been given special leave, Mummy is very tired and does not want you to go into our room until at least seven o'clock. Look, I'll set this alarm clock for you and when it goes off- then you can open your presents and we'll all be together." He tucked them back into their beds, kissed them and said "See you later. Merry Christmas." "Was that a dream?"

Emily said to Johnnie. "No", she slowly shook her head and then grinned as it dawned on her; " Dad's home and that's our best Christmas present ever!" And do you know, by seven o'clock, the mince pies and sherry had gone!

uring October, Yankalilla Writers upset the tranquillity at Ingalala Falls by hilariously attempting to practice the skit written for the performance, which was held at the Senior Citizen lunch on November 15th. We all enjoyed the company of local visitors during our last few meetings. During this time of year no doubt everyone is very busy and this year is no exception, Yankalilla Writers are planning our next production, due out in 2007, putting together a gazette for a local event as well as setting our meeting agenda for next year. GALLERY 88 and YANKALILLA ART GROUP Yankalilla Art Group November 2nd, being our last art meeting for 2006, saw the members enjoying a session of flowing wine, enticing food and happy, relaxed chat. Thanks to everyone for their many culinary skills. At such a busy pre-Christmas time not all our members or tutors were able to be present at our informal get-together but they were not forgotten and no doubt we will meet up again in the 2007 sessions.

During the meeting, a regular visiting tutor Betty Mahoney, kindly volunteered, with a little gentle persuasion, to critique the work on display This proved to be both helpful and encouraging which the members appreciated. She was also impressed with the quality of the paintings.

Gallery 88 ‘A Brush of Colour’ exhibition, which will run until the end of November, is well and truly underway with an encouraging number of visitors both local and from Interstate and abroad. Many are delighted, when viewing a particular painting to say, ‘I’ve visited that spot.’ ‘I know that place.’ This means that, gallery 88 is doing its little bit in encouraging tourism in our area. This can’t be bad and, in general, of benefit to all.

Why not give the stress and bustle of a busy life the flick and come along for a few, quiet moments of artistic enjoyment. We are open Wednesday to Sunday from 11.00 am. to 4.00 pm. There is always plenty to see and we are quite a friendly bunch.

2006 is rapidly disappearing so for general information gallery 88 will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. But in January watch out for the fabulous display of work exhibited by Lorraine and Terry Lewitzka. Jot down the date in that New Year’s Diary Santa left in you stocking…

Where The Grass Grows High

hen first settled in the 1830s Torrens Vale and Hay Flat were seen as places 'where grass grew as high as a horseman's stirrup'. Glowing reports such as this brought an influx of settlers to the Southern Fleurieu. Most of them lived on family farms, a cow or two essential, their surplus milk, cream, butter and cheese often exchanged for groceries.

Larger families had more hands available to help with the milking.

Edwin Davey, who in 1877 leased ‘De vonshi re Fa rm’ ne ar Carrickalinga, having four sons and seven daughters, was able to milk a herd of 100 cows, producing 500lbs of butter for sale in Adelaide each week. With the likelihood of a good inheritance Davey's children were discouraged from marrying. Only

2007 Compass Cup. Saturday 27th January 2007

he most famous event in Mt Compass is on again.

On Saturday the 27th of January there is no other place to be except at the 2007 Compass Cup. For 33 years the Compass Cup has been running successfully in Mt Compass but in its 34th year things are being turned up a notch to make the 2007 event the biggest and the best ever.

There will be new rides, new stalls and new riders in Australia’s only cow race.

After the infamous cow race everyone is invited to stay and party on at the after race concert. Popular local band ‘Full Circle’ will play all of your old favourites and chart topping hits too. Food and drink will be available until late.

2007 crowd participation events will include: • Milk Loading Race • Rubber boot Marathon • Ute Competition • Dawn Dash

• Wobbly Cow Race • Tractor Pull Events cater for all ages. The younger ones can partake in the junior events or investigate the numerous rides and sideshows available. For the older ones why not take the challenge and bid to race a cow in Australia’s only cow race.

Teams of four are required to buy a cow to race and can win up to $350 in prize money. For the tamer, art and craft stalls and food facilities can provide a relaxing day out, which is fun for the whole family.

Don’t miss a fun family day out that not only provides a great laugh but also raises money for worthy community groups and charities.

By the 1890s dairy factories had been set up at Springbank, Inman Valley (considered one of the best in the state), and Lovely Valley, (this last now covered by the w a t e r s o f t h e M yp o n g a Reservoir). In 1921 a butter factory began operating in Yankalilla but was burned down in 1925.

From the 1900s mechanisation had brought an end to the old practice of skimming milk by hand, the cream separator having been developed. Then came the first milking machines, used in this district in the 1930s. These machines milked a single cow into a bucket. Later, several cows were milked at one time, the milk piped into 10-gallon cans. Milk temperature was reduced by placing wet bags around the cans.

Later, the milk flowed over a series of pipes through which cool water circulated.

In the 1930s a group of Myponga dairy farmers became dissatisfied with poor returns from city vendors and established their own co-operative for receiving and marketing their milk. Their Myponga factory began operating in 1937, the good returns trebling the income of producers who had previously sold cream or butter.

As milk supplies to the factory increased and the disposal of whey and waste became a problem, the Myponga Cooperative established a piggery, the whey pumped from the factory into pipelines running to the piggery. In the 1940s, with increasing milk intake, additional buildings and machinery saw the production of cheese for export to England.

By the 1960s and 1970s milking was highly mechanised, with walk-through bails, then the herringbone with a central open

pit. This was followed by the rotary system able to milk 50 to 60 cows on an elevated level, the operator seeing to the milking without having to stoop.

In 1965 the Myponga Cooperative began collecting milk in bulk, the milk having been refrigerated in farm tanks immediately after milking. By 1971 the collection of milk in cans was at an end and 'gone was the washing and lifting of the ten gallon cans of milk, a real nightmare for dairymen and factory workers alike'.

When, in 1975, the Myponga, Jervois and Dairy Vale cooperatives amalgamated to become Dairy Vale Metro Cooperative Ltd., cheese making was concentrated at Jervois. The Myponga factory was then sold, and was eventually used for mushroom growing. These days it is the venue for a popular market.

From a hands-on, labour intensive chore, the dairying industry has become a highly mechanised one.

And through the herd testing services of the Herd Improvement Services of S.A. Co-op Ltd (HISCOL) the industry has entered the electronic age, most dairy farmers sending milk samples to the Milk Board in Adelaide for electronic testing.

Herd owners also have access to a wide range of bull-semen (some from overseas), giving them a wide choice of bulls for herd improvement.

The Yankalilla museum has an eye-catching, informative display of photographs and equipment covering the early history and growth of the dairying industry in this area. The museum is open on Sundays from 1 p.m.

Yes we won a Commonwealth Government Festivals Australia grant for a community mosaics project over summer. Volunteers will work with mosaic artist in residence Jane Smeets (pictured on left, with painter George Tetlow and Jane’s assistant Nancy at the recent workshop at Corinium Roman Villa) to put mosaics on seats and various public utilities during the January holiday season. This project will happen in cooperation with Council Works Manager Darryl Schintler.

Learn on the job and you’ll become so skilled as an artisan that you’ll want to decorate your home, gifts, outbuildings etc.

In February and March we will follow up by designing and creating a permanent artwork for unveiling in April to celebrate our creativity and the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival.

fter some 34 years of combined service, local "ambos" Alison Fretwell and Noel Raper have decided to turn off the siren and flashing lights and retire from active service to the Yankalilla SA Ambulance/St John team. During this period, they have voluntarily given over 26 000 hours of their time in service to their community and have touched the lives of many on the way. An everincreasing number of grandchildren are sure to keep Alison busy for years to come with lawn bowls, four-wheel driving holidays and

Hooded Plovers on Carrickalinga and Normanville Beaches

H

ooded Plovers live and nest on sandy beaches.

They are a small bird (10 cm tall) and look similar to a small sandpiper, and are not to be confused with the Masked Lapwing (Masked Plover).

Hooded Plovers nest between August and March, coinciding with the peak time of beach use by the public.

The nests (simple scrape in the sand) are located on the beach approximately 5m in front of the foredune. The eggs and chicks are both well camouflaged and are at risk from a variety of threats, for example, being stepped on

by people or eaten/trampled by dogs. As a result, breeding success is low and the species is now listed as vulnerable (less than 50 Hooded Plovers remain on the Fleurieu Peninsula).

Classic Adelaide

he Classic Adelaide celebrated its tenth anniversary when it took to the tarmac from 16th to the 19th of November this year.

Morning tea was again held at the Yankalilla oval on the Friday 17th leg at 10.30am.

Hundreds gathered for a closeup look at some of the most expensive vehicles on our roads today. The refreshments and food were catered for by the sporting club and, local service clubs.

Many classes from the Yankalilla Area School made their way there, where students attempted to gain as many autographs as possible.

Among the competitors were Jim Richards and Jack

Brabham along with a host of other motoring greats and a field of exotic machines from Ferrari, Mercedes, Maserati, Jaguar, BMW and more. What a wonderful opportunity it was to get up close and personal with some living legends of the road circuit. Congratulations to the organisers and volunteers associated with this event and here’s to 10 more!

ussiextreme and Siam Sea Change at the Old Courthouse Normanville celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Classic Adelaide in style. A huge A-frame sign and a mystery helmeted chequered flag waving racing enthusiast welcomed the competitors to Normanville as they made their way from Yankalilla to the next stage of their time trials over the Myponga Reservoir wall. Many of those driving through recognised the mystery person as one of Aussiextreme's mannequins, but many presumed it to be a 'real person' with the majority waving and tooting loudly in return.

y the time you receive this copy of The Yankalilla news the festive season will be just around the comer, and before I go any further I would like to wish each and every one of our readers a very happy, joyous and safe Christmas and New Year, It would be marvellous if I could report in the New Year that we had no incidents.

Last year over the holiday period we attended to 19 incidents, and we all hope it is quieter this year. We had our AGM on the 20th October and there were a few minor changes. Our previous Chairman Lindsay Short

has shifted closer to the city and did not seek re-election and Jim Stacey has taken on the job of Chairman.

As Lindsay was our inaugural Chairman I must thank him for the time and effort he put in to help set up this organization in this part of the world. Many thanks Lindsay and I hope Sea Rescue Adelaide doesn't work you too hard, Christine Kirkbride was re-elected for another term as Minute Secretary. Paul Brown was re -elected as Flotilla Leader. We had a couple of minor incidents at Wirrina, but a near tragedy was luckily averted at Cape

Jervis when a fisherman happened to fall from his boat and was found by another fisherman some distance from his boat. Indeed he was a very lucky chap. But that is not all the story. The "good Samaritan" who towed this chaps boat into Cape Jervis had the misfortune to hit a rock with his prop. Causing many thousands of dollars damage. Many people including ourselves, have been complaining about the depth of water adjacent to the small boat ramp at the Cape, especially at low tide. I went down to the Cape just after this incident was reported to me to have a first hand look at the situation. I must admit that it was a fairly low tide and what I saw was not good at all. There were rocks sticking out of the water only a few metres from the ramp, and if this was a night time operation with a

major rescue taking place and a number of boats trying to launch or offload rescued people this would be a very dangerous and potentially damaging place to be. With some of these duo props, which are now used on modern boats today the replacement cost could be upwards of $5,000. I think that this situation needs to be remedied as soon as possible. With the number of small fishing boats and much larger charter boats using the Cape ramp I would suggest that this matter be given urgent attention. From the Wirrina Flotilla of the S.A. Yankalilla Area School YAS 50 Celebrations Summary

E

x-students and teachers travelled from all over Australia to attend the 50th birthday celebrations of Yankalilla Area School.

Celebrations began on Friday the 27th of October with an Open day at the school.

Classrooms were open to the public; archives were on display; old time marching and folk dancing were demonstrated and children danced around the Maypole.

An official assembly was held to commemorate the occasion, replicating in part the assembly that was conducted on the same spot fifty years ago. Among the special guests who included local M.P. Michael Pengilly, were Mr Tom Lyddon and Mrs Betty Herring, who were members of the 1956 school committee. Fittingly, they cut the cake.

That evening there was a dance in the gym, with music provided free of charge by Bernie Scott and the Hard Yacka Bush Band – both of whom have a long history of providing live music in the district.

The fair on Saturday was an outstanding success. It was an opportunity for those who were unable to attend the Open day, to catch up with old school mates and relive the highlights of the past. There were many stalls, lots of food, memorabilia and activities for children. Individual and group photos were taken courtesy of Joseph Gonzales. Many thanks to Trudy Noack and her band of willing helpers for organising such a wonderful day.

Of course it did not finish there. That night was the dinner to end all dinners. Approximately 200 people attended the beautifully decorated gym (the inspired brain child of Sonia Jensen).

Guest speakers included Chris Nunn, Tracey Braithwaite (via the big screen) and Janet Jones, all ex students from eras that span the area school’s fifty year history. M.C. Roger Sweetman kept the evening running smoothly.

Credit must go to the Principal, Rosie Harden and her hard working dinner committee for ensuring that the celebrations ended on such a high note.

All in all it was an event befitting a proud school. Its fifty years can tell thousands of stories and boast some wonderful achievements – whatever the size of the stage.

Thanks must go the YAS 50 committee. They can feel relieved that they won’t be required to help organise the YAS 100 celebrations. Thanks must also go to the school staff, their students and the parent community. Without their combined efforts, the series of events over the 40 hours of celebrations would not have occurred.

WHEELS DAY

n November 8th at 12.20pm 76 year 3, 4 and 5 students rode, pushed, rolled and walked their way to Normanville Beach under sunny skies and windy conditions. The walkers set off first, followed closely by the pushers and rollers. The bike riders spent time in the school quadrangle showing their weaving and balancing skills before they set off in two groups to join the others on the foreshore lawns.

It was great to see so many young people being active together both physically and socially.

We were greeted by a couple of dolphins in a smooth and clear sea. Everyone enjoyed hot chips and nuggets supplied by the Jetty food store – thank you to them for their generous support. Icecreams followed before we spilt out onto the beach. Most couldn’t resist a paddle or a game of beach cricket.

Time went so quickly that soon we had to head back to school, all appreciating being out of the classroom and enjoying our beautiful environment.

We say thank you to the parents who came on the day and also to Paul Shephard, Di Peglar, Lynn Wheaton and Ruth Blesing who helped in traffic control at main crossing areas. We would also like to thank all the parents who supported this activity by assisting their child to be prepared.

WAKAKIRRI

ankalilla Area School participated in the WAKAKIRRI Grand Finals at the FESTIVAL THEATRE on 26TH OCTOBER 2006. They achieved a SILVER MEDAL (2ND PLACING) and were WINNERS OF THE POLICE SCHOOL WATCH AWARD to the value of $1000. They also received a Distinction for Story and were Highly Commended for all other categories. A fantastic effort from the Yankalilla year 6/7 students.

Student comments – As we crept along through the corridor of the Festival Theatre, I felt like I was going to faint. I kept thinking I was going to forget a move and make a fool of myself on stage. The stage director ordered us to get into our positions so I grabbed my hoop and jumped on to centre stage. As the curtains rose I felt even more nervous, like I was going to faint. Kate, Lauren, Sharnii and I started off hula hooping but as I went to spin the hoop on my arm it rolled off! I thought it was going to roll off the stage but luckily it didn’t.

I still felt like I was going to faint after the first dance but I didn’t feel as nervous. The neglected children did their job well and sent the message right through the audience. Quickly, I whacked my dress on over the top of my skirt and top, ripped my socks off and I was ready to go back on stage for the slow dance. Looking sad and miserable we moved slowly to the music. I felt a cold feeling in my stomach and realised how lucky I was to have a family that cared for me. At the end of the dance, we slowly walked off the stage, ripped our dress and socks off, ready to come on for the second to last dance.

The last dance was showing the world that there is help out there for neglected kids. It was showing us all together and happy. I walked off the stage that night feeling that a strong message was sent out to the audience.

This year’s Wakakirri was about children who fall victim to child abuse. In the first scene we showed all the children in the school playing happily. Then all the children go home but three lag behind. In the next scene we showed how each child is abused. The first was neglected, the second had domestic violence in the house and the third was a victim of alcohol abuse. In the third scene we showed the sadness of the three children through a slow dance.

In the last scene all the children are back at school and they notice the three look sad and take them to the school counsellor. The message in are Wakakirri was that there is always help available. We performed really well and won 2nd place. There are a lot of people who helped us with the Wakakirri and deserve a big thank you. They are: Mrs Oliver and Mrs Parker who organised the Wakakirri, Nikki Mcgrane who did our choreography and Bronwyn Lang who helped with sets and props.

A Fair Cow

I

knew a farmer who bred a cow that gave about 55 litres of milk per day. That’s a lot of milk and I’m glad that we didn’t have a herd like that in the days of hand milking.

In those days we sat on a stool with our head tucked into a cow’s breech while our fingers squeezed at teats that sent streams of white milk cutting through the rising froth in the bucket. As we milked, the cow munched at some hay in a manger and possibly a cat purred nearby hoping to get a drink.

Back to the big cow. The dairy farmer, after years of careful breeding and husbandry, had developed a herd second to none. He proudly walked them in from the paddocks - their udders tight with milk.

However, one morning as he went out to round up his milkers, he noticed something odd. They were lying on their sides – heads flat out on the ground. ‘It can’t be,’ he thought. But, it was. Every cow was dead.

A workman had left a gate open that gave them access to pasture treated with urea.

Grief stricken, he woke his family with the awful news - ‘Our cows are dead.’

Efforts to comfort him were futile. But, at his darkest moment as he brooded on his loss, his wife announced something that raised his spirits. A truck turned into their driveway - loaded with cows - soon another - also carrying cows with udders filled with milk.

The trucks headed for the dairy and reversed into the loading ramp and unloaded the cows into the yard. Tip trucks and front end loaders arrived to cart away the dead animals and soon the farmer was milking again with a great new herd.

What happened? Other dairies had heard about the disaster and, together, worked on a plan to restore his loss. Each farmer selected the top cow from their own herds and donated it so that the man could immediately be back in full production.

It was a wonderful gesture and may well stimulate our thoughts at this time of year.

The Bible says that we have all gone astray like sheep. Or, could we say, ‘like cows we have gone through the wrong gate and grazed on the wrong grass.’

It was God, Himself, who responded to our loss. He gave his best for us - His only son Jesus.

I find it interesting that Jesus was born in a cattle shed and laid in a hay manger - where a cow was milked?

Let me encourage you to meditate on the most familiar verse in the Bible.

‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Some of the children’s responses have stimulated general curiosity and excitement and these have developed into group projects.

The first project was an interest in “What happens at school”.

Teachers extended this interest by developing a school corner at kindy, reading stories about starting school and visiting the Yankalilla Area School. The second project is an interest in horses. Children wanted to learn how to draw horses, how to look after horses and how to ride horses. ankalilla Visitor Information Centre, managed by the District Council of Yankalilla, is looking for local people of all ages with a little time on their hands to come and help run the Centre.

People can volunteer for as little as three hours a week and in exchange they can expect to gain skills in hospitality, the local and regional tourism industry, community events, computer and internet operations. Other benefits include strong friendships with fellow volunteers and interesting famils to local and regional tourism attractions.

Next month Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre celebrates its 9th birthday. According to event management and tourism officer, Don Chapman, the Centre welcomes approximately 14,000 visitors a year through the door.

Don attributes the success of the Visitor Information Centre to its t hi rt y vol unt eers. “Thei r knowledge, friendliness and enthusiasm for this area is impressive and the Centre could not exist without them”, he said.

What an opportunity. Many of these businesses have employees who are committed to the business and the community. They know both well. They already live in the area. Isn’t the obvious connection to explore the practicality of an employee “buyout” while time is on everyone’s side to plan and develop the skills and finance necessary for a smooth transition.

Staff buyouts do work. Running a small business takes additional skills and resources but these can be gained. It is a case of commitment and persistence rather than rocket science. Good old fashioned commonsense and timing. The alternative can be a slow and awkward process with an uncertain outcome.

S

uccessful flea control involves control on the animal and in the environment. Since dogs and cats may share the same fleas, you must ensure both animals are treated.

Although you are only able to see the adult flea, there are 4 stages of the life cycle. The adult fleas constitute only about 5% of the entire flea population. Flea eggs are pearly white and about .5mm in diameter. They are difficult to see without magnification. Fleas lay their eggs on the fur and the eggs fall off into the environment. The eggs make up 50% of the flea population. They hatch into larvae in 1 - 10 days. High humidity temperature favour rapid hatching.

(However they can remain dormant for months).

Flea larvae are slender and about 25mm in length. They feed on organic debris found in their environment and on adult flea faeces, which is essential for successful development. They avoid direct sunlight and actively move deep into carpet fibres or under organic debris (grass, branches, leaves or soil). They live for 5 - 11 days then pupate. Moisture is essential for the survival of these immature stages of the flea. Larvae are killed by drying, such as by the sun. Larval development occurs where the ground is shaded and moist and where flea-infested pets spend a significant amount of time.

This allows faeces to be deposited in the environment. I an indoor environment, larvae survive best in carpet or in cracks between hardwood floors. They thrive in warm conditions.

The mature larvae produce a silklike cocoon in which the next step of development, the pupa, resides.

becomes coated with debris from the environment. This serves to camouflage it. In warm, humid conditions, pupae become adult fleas in 5 - 10 days. However, adults do not emerge from the cocoon unless stimulated by physical pressure, carbon dioxide, or heat.

Fleas can survive up to 140 days within the cocoon. During this time, they are resistant to insecticides applied to their environment.

Therefore adult fleas may continue to emerge into the environment for up to 3 months following insecticide application.

When the flea emerges from its cocoon, it immediately seeks a host because it must have a blood meal within a few days to survive. It is attracted to people and pest by body heat, movement, and exhaled carbon dioxide. It seeks light, so it migrates to the surface of the carpet to encounter a passing host. Egg production can continue for as long as 100 days, and a single flea can produce thousands of eggs. The entire life cycle can be completed in 7-21 days with proper temperature and humidity conditions.

If untreated, flea will continue to take blood for several weeks. The female can consume about 15 times her body weight in blood. Heavy infestations can cause significant blood loss and anaemia. Some animals become allergic to the saliva in the flea’s mouth and a bite causes intense itching.

Successful flea control must rid the dog and cat of fleas and it must rid the animal’s environment of fleas. It may be impossible to completely rid the environment of fleas, but their numbers can still be reduced by control. Environmental flea control usually must be directed at the animals immediate environment, the house and any outbuildings occupied by the dog or cat. Even

though fleas may be in your house, they are usually never seen. Fleas greatly prefer dogs and cats to people; they generally only infest humans when there has not been a dog or cat in the house for several days. Local Environmental Group Expands

ue to increasing interest and enquiries from landholders, both urban and rural, the Bungala River Restoration Group has recently become incorporated to form the Yankalilla Bay Catchment Action Group (YBCAG).

The group will now cover the area which includes the Yankalilla, Bungala, Carrickalinga and the Lower Myponga (below the Reservoir) Rivers, and is looking forward to working with landholders within the newly expanded area on a variety of Natural Resource Management (NRM) related tasks.

A public meeting and official launch of the group will be conducted early in 2007 and official notification of this event will be provided through local media. ollowing on from our successful stall at the Yankalilla Show we were invited to be part of the Yankalilla Area School 50th Anniversary Fair. Once again we put up our green marquee, set up our displays and encouraged children (and quite a few adults) to take part in a range of activities designed to increase their awareness of the environment and the animals, which are part of it. Thank you to the Yankalilla Area School students who helped us out on the day.

Home Energy Self-Audit – The resource centre has just taken delivery of a Home Energy Self-Audit Kit for use by households who want to develop a greater awareness of their energy use. The kit comes complete with worksheets and a comprehensive instruction manual. The kit enables you to: • Measure hot water flow from showerheads and taps.

• Measure the temperature of your hot water, the temperature inside your fridge and freezer and the temperature at which your heating and cooling systems operate.

• Observe draughts around doors and windows, under curtains and through gaps and cracks in walls, floors and ceilings.

Boneseed – Current Management and Control Options for Boneseed in Australia – Boneseed, a South African shrub, was introduced to Australia as a garden plant in the late 1800s. This fast growing, aggressive plant has no natural enemies in Australia and has spread from gardens to become a damaging environmental weed. Boneseed in an invasive weed, which has severe environmental impacts, smothering native plants and preventing regeneration. elcome to the Silly Season!

The club took a troop of 12 to Adelaide on the eve of the 2nd November to a “Young Riders” Seminar as part of the Adela ide International Horse Trials. Yvonne took a group of 'young-uns' and not-so young-uns on a bus trip to town to obtain some tips. Equine nutritionist Kerrie Spiers from 'Kentucky Research' and 'Morphettville Equine Clinic's Dr. Andrew Hunt presented the evening while the 'kids' enjoyed a BBQ and hopefully learned a whole lot about caring for their horses. Several members made their way to various parts of the Adelaide Internationals. I went as a first timer to the cross-country day and had a ball. Denise walked myself Kat and Jess through the course explaining difficulties and ways to get around them. Also an interesting time at the end of the course where the horses are cooled down and vetchecked. An aspect that had been discussed on the Thursday evening. October Rally on the 4th was a shared rally with Southern Hills Pony Club. 27 riders with Libby in the lead made their way to the beach along the roads to enjoy the treat of riding on the beach. A special mention goes to Yvonne who, armed with a 'pooper scooper', cleaned up the streets of what only horses do best! Thanks Yvonne.

Libby organized the event so thanks to you too Libby. Sally stayed back and took a group of 5 riders who did not wish to beach it. They enjoyed regular lessons of flat work and jumping. The visiting club enjoyed themselves and shared some lunch with us before heading back to the hills. On the 12th October, Jess George and Elisha Gallagher went out to Geoff Pannell's property at Inman Valley to try their hands at Vaulting. The

girls found themselves standing at a canter among other tricks and will earn themselves an extra achievement patch for their bravery.

November 26th is a Showjumping Day at Kangarilla Pony Club and several members will be having a go. More on that in the next issue.

e have had two functions in the past 4 weeks. The first was at the Ingalala Falls Wattle Flat Road. Where 19 people enjoyed the day. We had a pooled lunch followed by a game of Boalo & those who are more energetic went for a walk through the forest. A smaller group enjoyed an evening out at the Noarlunga Theatre to see “Ain't we got fun” this followed a very nice half priced meal at Mick O’Shea's. Our Christmas party is being held at the Yankalilla Golf Club on the 26 November. Father Christmas will be there with presents for the children. Our

Christmas Dinner will be held on the Saturday the 16 December at The Links. Menu & booking information is on our board at the Normanville shops. On the Saturday the 6th of January 2007 we will be holding our Trash & Treasure at the Agricultural Hall.

irstly, I need to say that I am not leaving Yankalilla as the article last month suggested. What appeared there was an example of the sort of thing I write. Unfortunately, it was printed and sounded as though it was a current view. I am going to hang around for a while yet.

When you read this, Christmas will not be far away. You may be looking forward to gathering with family and friends but, like many people, you will not be ready!! More than at any other time of the year, a great busyness consumes the lives of most people.

Nearly 2000 years ago, it was very similar. The people of Israel and Bethlehem had, for centuries, looked forward to the coming of the Messiah. The people of the Holy Land were also consumed in busyness because they had to attend to the census of the Roman Empire and had to travel long and arduous distances to the towns of their birth. The people weren’t ready. Neither was the innkeeper, or the shepherds, or King Herod. You have to wonder why they weren’t ready.

It was simple really: they had forgotten the prophecies of the prophets over some 400 years.

When the Messiah, in the form of the infant Jesus, came they did not recognize Him. The world was not ready then. It is not ready today. We are ready for a gentle manger scene. We are ready for the Anglo-Saxon lady; all robed in blue clothing that is so clean, beaming over

the beautiful infant in her arms.

We are ready for the sweet songs about Christmas and the coming of Christ. But are we ready for this Jesus Christ who comes along in human flesh?

Are we ready for this Jesus who confronts us with His words?

Are we ready for this Son of the Living God who comes to challenge us to a higher level of being and living?

Of course we are not ready! The real depth and meaning of Christmas continues to elude us.

We cannot turn a knob or press a button on our modern electronic devices and experience the REAL spirit of Christmas and the sheer wonder of God taking human form to live and work and die among us.

Jesus WAS confronting from His birth in that cold, smelly stable. You would remember the story of Herod who was threatened by this child and sought to kill Him. Perhaps, in all the nonsense of political correctness gone mad, people are again trying to kill Jesus.

ational Carers Week is over for another year. Two carloads of Carers from the "Time Out' group in Yankalilla came to Goolwa for the Carers Week luncheon and joined other Carers from the Southern Fleurieu.

Normanville and the Local Area

he Yankalilla District Council area is the western end of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Hundreds of Yankalilla, Myponga, the western two thirds of the Hundred of Waitpinga and an adjoining portion of the Hundred of Encounter Bay, containing 77,500 hectares, are within the area.

Rugged cliffs interspersed with coves and stretches of beach backed by sand-dunes form the coastline from Sellicks Hill to Cape Jervis, then east to the boundary of the Council Area, which is some 16 kilometres west of Encounter Bay, near the mouth of the Coolawang Creek.

The area lies in the southern section of the Mount Lofty Upland Fault Block and in general is characterised by a deeply dissected ridge of vale topography.

The central upland plateau is dissected by numerous streams, which flow to the Gulf of St. Vincent and the Southern Ocean most streams only flow during the wetter months.

There are two areas where fossiliferous rocks formed about 500 million years ago are exposed, along the coast north of Normanville to Sellicks Hill and in the Second Valley and Delamere area.

The rocks include sandstone, shale and limestone of variable c har ac te r c on ta in f oss ils representing the remains of the oldest shell-bearing organisms in Australia.

Aboriginal rituals were regularly held to perpetuate the Dreamtime journeys of ancestor beings and ensure the continuation of species of animals and plants vital to Aboriginal life.

Among the local legends is a story telling the formation of coastal springs on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The ‘mythical being’ credited with the creation of these water supplies was named Tjilbruke, He rose out of the ground near Mount Hayfield.

During winter Tjilbruke lived at the camp of two men named Lepuldawl and Watirion, in summer he spent at the coastal end of Witawateng Rapid Head.

One day the rumour reached Tjilbruke that his sister's son Kulutuwi had been killed near the

Sturt River at Waripari Marion.

He hastened to the scene and found that the young boy had broken a strict taboo, which forbade him to kill emus. As a result he had been struck down at the precise moment when he was raking the head of the emu from the fire.

The body of the dead boy had been taken to a place near Brighton, where, in accordance with ancient custom, it was being smoked and dried. Upon arrival at the beach Tjilbruke seized the body and took it back to a spring on the beach at Marino, (located near the Kingston Park Reserve) where the smoking process was completed. Tjilbruke then carried the body along the coast until he came to a spot near Hallett Cove where he rested with his burden.

Overcome with grief, tears began to stream down his face and fall to the ground. A spring of water rose up to provide a permanent supply for successive generations of Aborigines.

Tjilbruke continued his journey, but reaching Port Noarlunga he broke into tears again. He stopped several more times - each time shedding tears - at Red Ochre Cove - near Port Willunga jetty, - (to this day fresh water can be found by digging in the sand). He then went on to the beach at Sellicks Hill; here he noticed a, fine bay where sea salmon could be caught, at night again he cried, another spring was created. Tjilbruke continued along the coast of Myponga - to a spot near Carrickalinga Head, where a small swamp marks his resting place.

He then travelled to Kongaratingga, here there is a cave where he camped.

Tjilbruke continued south until he reached the coastal cliffs at Cape Jervis. From the Cape he returned northwards along the foreshore coming to another cave called JanarwingHe left Kulultuwi’s smoked body at the entrance while he walked into the cave to find a suitable ledge where he could lay Kulutuwi’s body.

He put up sticks in the manner used when smoking a body, the body was placed on the ledge and then he abandoned the area.

Tjilbruke did not emerge from the cave but continued on into the

hill until he saw the sun through a crevice, he climbed up, emerging at the top of the hill, near a swampy lagoon, transformed himself into an ibis. Here Tjilbruke spends the remainder of his days catching fish in the lagoon 1801 Matthew Flinders was given command of the ‘Investigator’ in July arrived at Cape Leeuwin.

Flinders completed the first circumnavigation of Australia, he made many discoveries and beat the French sailor Nicholas Baudin to mapping much of the coast Flinders decided he should return to England, but because the 'Investigator' was in disrepair, it was decided Flinders should return to England on the 'Porpoise' to present his charts to the Admiralty, the 'Porpoise' ran aground on Wreck Reef – off the east coast of Australia.

He returned to Sydney, took command of the schooner 'Cumberland', then returned to rescue the crew of the 'Porpoise' then resumed his journey to England.

1802. On the 23rd March Matthew Flinders saw the western end of the peninsula from Kangaroo Island; he then named it Cape Jervis to honour the family of Earl of St Vincent one of the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty.

Nicholas Baudin named the peninsula Fleurieu, after Charles Pierre Claret Count of Fleurieu French navigator and Minister of Marine in 1911, the Count of Fleurieu, a grand nephew of the Minister of Marine, visited Adelaide, the result of this visit was the naming of the peninsula

terminating at Cape Jervis – ‘Fleurieu Peninsula’ by the S.A. Branch of the Royal Geographical Society.

Fleurieu Peninsula - known to the sealers of Kangaroo Island, because the bay offered shelter from prevailing winds - south westerly gales. Whaling base was established at Granite Island and the Bluff; this provided the first export for the Colony - whale oil.

1831 In England about this time was the start of the Industrial Revolution. Cottage Industries had failed and Common Ground was closed to the poor rural population, they could no longer fish or grow their corn etc.

1834 The British Parliament passed the Act for the planned City of Adelaide, to establish the colony of South Australia".

Colonel Light was appointed Surveyor-General, his instructions -'to inspect a suitable site for the planned City, - South Australia a British Province for Colonisation and Government there-of.

1836 In August Light arrived at Nepean Bay, Kangaroo Island, but was not impressed. In September Light sailed into Rapid Bay, he wrote favourably about Rapid Bay ‘I have hardly seen a place I like better and it is well adapted for a Capital, if I do not find better Settlers started farming crops and dairy farms and obtained land in 80-acre lots. Yankalilla was one of the largest producing areas of grain in the State, sending grain and flour to Adelaide and Victoria during the time of the gold rush

BANGERS AND MASH ANYONE?

e do not hear or read of sausages and mashed potatoes very much nowadays, nor of the Sunday roast with three veggies.

How tastes have changed over the years.

Sausages or ‘mysteries’ as they were sometimes called as, during the Second World war the contents were mostly of unknown origin – (it was rumoured that sawdust was a prevalent inclusion!) covered with thick brown gravy, were regarded as a cheap, filling meal, I say were cheap because they are not nowadays, a kilogram of snags is on a par with some cuts of steak and beef and, not a budget priced item to include on the weekly grocery list.

Even the common old ‘spud’ is bordering on a luxury status going by prices but there are those who will not have any main meal unless

potatoes are included.

Of course, dieticians and experts on food tell us calories and carbohydrates etc are good for us in our daily intake. However, like everything a little is better than too much.

What has happened over the years though is the introduction by immigrants from Asia, Europe and other countries of their traditional dishes using ingredients that were previously unknown and mostly unavailable.

For instance from Asia; spices, vegetables and oodles of noodles.

Italy; many varieties of cheese, p a st a s an d ri ch s au c es t o compliment their dishes.

Out went the frying, the overcooking of vegetables, and tasteless and bland stews and casseroles. In came the sautéing, light steaming of vegetables and the subtle addition of flavours that enhanced meals.

Overall, we had our taste buds tested, and we became eager to try these new tempting dishes with flavours that remained as a reminder of what we may have been missing out on. One thing we were convinced of was that cooking could actually be fun, interesting and challenging.

As well, supermarkets, delicatessens and veggie and fruit shops gradually began to cater to public demand.

We were able to have a choice of these wonderful exotic greens, strange sounding names like bok choy, Chinese cabbage and lettuce, curry and lime leaves, cooking spices and herbs that intrigued such as anise, ginger, coriander, cumin, chilli powders and whole chilli's, fenugreek, dill, fennel, to name a few. Just to think that a couple of tablespoons of good old curry powder used to be spot on when a ‘hot’ dish was contemplated.

Dried mushrooms - varieties never heard of before, we were only familiar with freshly picked, cooked and eaten from the paddocks following a good downpour of rain, and only if those same paddocks were fertilizer free.

Then there were the ingredients for sauces, balsamic vinegar, fish sauce, virgin olive oil, yoghurt and sake.

We had to totally re-think our storage cupboards in the kitchen and stock up with these essential components.

Asian vegetable markets sprang up.

It was and still is a pleasure and a memorable experience to stand in the Central Market in Adelaide and absorb all these wonderful smells, sights and aromas that twitch the nose and impel one to take home some of these tempting goods for sale and have a go at creating a feast.

If of a piscatorial persuasion, seafood is a ‘must’ in any menu. Not the old way of chucking a few fillets of the good old whiting or gardies into about 2 inches of melted d r i p p i n g a n d f r y i n g t h e m, accompanied by the same grease covered chips, with vinegar, pepper and salt on the side.

No! No! – Nowadays, a more subtle approach is vital so that the natural sea flavours permeate the dish and tantalise the taste buds. The mouth salivates at the thought of oysters, crayfish, (lobster) prawns, shrimps, raw sushi fillets, freshly caught harvests of the sea and seaweed wrapped surprises, displayed,

prepared and presented to tease and satisfy the imagination of seafood gourmets.

Since the advent of television, we have been subjected to chefs, cooks and restaurant proprietors all demonstrating their own particular type of cooking and their speciality dishes for viewers to watch, and try to emulate.

Back in the 50’s and 60’s daytime television would have about one segment per week hosted and demonstrated by a cook who may have been a well-known author of a recipe book or books. To us at home this was the highlight of the week but, nowadays today’s productions, with the staff involved, the sponsors to put together a half hour segment and, the ingredients listed, there is no comparison.

For a start, to have someone on telly demonstrate how to roast a chicken together with those three veggies and gravy was a luxury for a meal as most families regarded chooks as being traditionally either a Xmas dinner fare or perhaps at Easter. Not many could either afford or even consider poultry outside of these occasions.

Now, on any night of the week, on any given channel, there are numerous chefs, cooks, foodies and local identities all willing to improve our eating and dining lifestyle, at the same time extolling the various brands and, sources of contents but, entirely unaware that most of their viewers either have no near available access or, cannot even afford the ingredients. As these television cooking gurus emphasise, cheaper alternatives, although readily available are not really suitable for such a dish.

Th ere are th ose, esp ecially teenagers, who will pull faces, go ‘yuk’ if offal is mentioned.

However, our childhood meals were frequently offal based, mostly because it was free, the butchers were glad to get rid of it.

Lambs fry and brains are considered a luxury priced item, the common shin of beef (changed name to osso bucco) for that wholesome soup, is now known as a gourmet meal, and you pay osso bucco prices not shin of beef prices, the epicurean titles govern the price in most cases.

There are more varied choices for us to try. If not in an adventurous mood and your philosophy is ‘better the devil you know than the devil you don’t’ then stick with the old favourites.

Boring bangers and mash? I say off with you, I have more interesting and exciting flavours to indulge in.

W

ith daylight saving now in place in most states of Australia, it's time to consider what those "extra hours" of sunlight might do. Of course adjusting our clocks is no more likely to have an adverse effect on our health than it is to fade the curtains. But with the hot, sunny weather we are likely to encounter over the next few months, there will certainly be a greater risk of sunrelated skin problems. So it's now, at the very beginning of summer, that Cancer Council Australia launches its National Skin Cancer Action Week, to raise awareness of skin cancer and sun protection issues. It was back in 1981 that one of the most successful health campaigns in Australia's history first began. Twenty-five years ago the seagull in board shorts tapdanced his way via the media into our lives, cheerfully singing the slip, slap, slop jingle. You would think that by now, everyone of us would have got the message, but still there are people who mistakenly believe there is such a thing as a safe tan. According to the Cancer Council, deliberate tanning results in body art of the most dangerous kind. In Australia nearly 400,000 people are treated each year for skin cancer; around 1500 die. To the original three S's in the slogan,

another S has been added - to ensure even greater awareness of the need for protection from the sun. As well as the recommendation to slip on a shirt, slap on a hat and slop on some sunscreen, we should also slide on some sunglasses (make sure they meet the Australian Standard AS1067). And now this year we will be confronted with a new phrase from the Cancer Council: Strip, Search and Save. It's all about detecting skin cancers, especially the potentially fatal melanoma, early - early enough to ensure a complete cure. If you have a partner, this is a really healthy pastime the two of you can share.

Even if you are alone, there are some handy hints you can get from your doctor or pharmacist on how to check your own skin. The "Slip, Slap, Slop" campaign has worked well to increase our awareness of the dangers of sun exposure; but only up to a point.

Apparently most of us know to protect ourselves at the beach or swimming pool, however, we forget to take the same precautions working or socialising outdoors at home.

Research undertaken by the Cancer C o u n c i l a n d t h e A us t r a l i a n Department of Health and Aging shows that it's not just the day, or even several days, at the beach that

causes sun damage to our skin. The many days spent involved with everyday activities, without adequate protection from the sun, might be even more dangerous. Results of the survey indicated that Australians were much more likely to get sunburnt at home than anywhere else. So even "accidental tanning" is a risky business. Perhaps that's not so surprising. The survey showed that while around 8% of Australians regularly went to the beach at the weekend, nearly 30% spent time gardening or working around the

house. If you're 55 years old or more, you were probably in your 30s when the need for skin protection became well recognised; and most of the damage to your skin had already taken place. Of course, it's not too late to look after your skin now; but you also need to check your skin regularly for any new spots or a change in appearance of those existing spots. The Country Club Virtual Enterprise

n Tuesday 31 October The Country Club Virtual Enterprise held its official launch at the Victor Harbor Campus of TAFESA. The Country Club Virtual Enterprise was formed from a partnership between TAFESA and Kirsty Ackland of McCracken Country Club, who has agreed to mentor the students and the Australian Network of Practice Firms Central Office in Canberra. Training is focussed on competencies that fit within Certificates II, III and IV in Business Administration.

Students operate their own business making decisions that lead the business into profitable (or not-so-profitable) outcomes. This provides a safe and secure learning environment for students to work on a national basis with the 150 Australian firms. While The Country Club only operated within Australia, there are some 4,000

virtual enterprises operating globally.

Virtual Enterprise methodology helps students to develop skills, which make them highly employable, and teaches them how a business really works and how decisions are made. The main difference is that students get to have a second go if they make mistakes.

They test their skills in IT, customer relations, interpersonal relationships, negotiation and time management. Students are mentored and coached by their business partner in industry operations.

There are almost 4000 practice firms, or virtual enterprises as they are now called, throughout the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Enterprise action learning underpins all activities in the Practice Firmâ&#x20AC;?

Guest speakers: Penny Hardy, State Convenor of Virtual Enterprises in South Australia, Mr Michael Pengilly, Member for Finniss, Kirsty Ackland of McCracken Country Club and Brenton Smith, Community Services manager Hills Fleurieu Region.
