A Touch of the Blarney

uring an overseas holiday some years ago, one of the tours incorporated Wales, Scotland, and Ireland (Northern Ireland was not included due to the problems in the area at that time).

As our arrival from Australia had been approximately only weeks before and, still becoming adjusted to other customs, cultures surroundings etc, we were more or less prepared to accept whatever faced us when we left for the above tours.

It was wet, cold and windy as we alighted from our coach and stood outside Cardiff Castle in Wales peering through the gates and hearing somewhere in the distance, plaintive cries from the resident peacocks, probably echoing our thoughts and opinions of the miserable weather.

I really don’t think our group was in the appropriate mood to absorb beauty and historical scenery at that time of the morning. (not yet 9am). All we wanted was warmth, plus something to eat and a hot drink.

Thankfully, our visit was brief and we headed off to the next scheduled comfort stop to enjoy a hot drink and something to eat before continuing to the coast and boarding the ferry at Pembroke for Ireland.

What a surprise for us! We had never seen a ferry of such magnitude, and we were not the only coach travelling in the hold, so it was a sight to see all the passengers alighting from their respective coaches in the bowels of the ship, ensuring they had all their

valuables on them, as the coaches were locked up tight until docking in the Ireland port.

Our guide had warned us beforehand that hopefully we would not need a plough in this instance to smooth the waves as the passage was to be comparatively pleasant. I gave a sigh of relief as I am not a good sailor at any time, I could sit in a row boat and someone stand in front of me and sway from side to side, I would end up being horribly seasick!

We left in the afternoon and, after a good trip of about 4 and half hours, we arrived in Rosslare Harbour, then p r oc e e d ed t o T r a n m o r e , ve r y comfortable accommodation too.

We had promised friends back in Oz that we would sample a Guinness, not my taste at all but, I had my usual choice of half brandy and dry ginger ale.

My husband watched his Guinness being poured, he had been told to let it stand to settle, the advice was not wrong, as it resembled a muddy concoction, in fact very similar to the River Liffy..

Apparently the Irish bartenders have never heard of a ‘half’ brandy. Imagine if you will our Oz equivalent of a ‘butcher’, well this is what my brandy was, accompanied by a small bottle of Canadian dry ginger ale, I just thought they were being very thoughtful with an extra ginger ale. Not so, as I found out when I took my first good swig from the glass, WOW! Packed quite a punch and made my eyes water!

us sleepy and enjoy a good night’s rest, we would take a short stroll around the village. I was hanging out for a chocolate, and we ventured into this little store. The lighting inside was just as dim and eerie as it was outside.

Products in wheat bags just inside the door reminded me of a stock agent’s in Australia, with bags of bran, pollard, wheat, various flours and piles of peat for burning in the stove, this being the on ly c ook i n g m ea n s in s om e households.

A real country character appeared from the darkness beyond the shop’s meagre lighting and, although I cannot imitate an Irish brogue, his opening greeting did actually go something like “Begorra and good evening to you both, are you from across the sea?” To which we answered “ yes”.

However, as to my request for chocolate, there was chocolate but we did not have any Irish money having had no opportunity to exchange any coinage for the local currency, so back to the hotel and crave another day in another place. I must say though that the proprietor of the little shop looked as if he was going to burst into tears when he couldn’t assist us, I felt really sorry for him.

Another day and onto another destination on our route, this time Waterford to see the home of it’s famous crystal. I had only read about and seen pictures of it. We had the privilege of staying a fair amount of time to walk around and view the various products displayed.

I was agog at the huge, long table totally set with Waterford crystal of every type, displayed at it’s very best for the final effect to the most discerning eye.

Suspended over the table to enhance the overall effect, was a huge crystal chandelier, lovely to look at but, out of the average tourist’s price range. One item that was eagerly sought and purchased was a crystal chess set, being bought by one of the American tourists from our coach party. All that went through my mind was, break just one piece , and that was enough for me not to covet such an item of grandeur. This was the trend for the Americans on all the cheaper coach tours, save money on the travel, and then have a splurge upon arrival at many destinations.

For ME, the purchase of a small well known brand plate was satisfaction enough and I can take it out of its box and recall where and when I added it to my humble collection at the same time reminisce at the memory of the tiny salt and pepper shakers included in that wonderful table display at that time (budget did not allow for purchase), Oh well at least I have my memories The aforementioned is from my diary notes over the first two days of our Irish trip.

As we spent seven days in total on the Emerald Isle, I consider it prudent to only relate part of our journey at this time and, continue in further episodes to share our experiences with the readers.

i everyone!

Okay we understand that it is actually winter but does it have to be so cold. Maybe the people who travel north for the winters are on a good thing, or possibly we are getting a bit older and less tolerant!

The storms last month certainly provided some amazing sights up and down the SA coast. Certainly made for a spectacular evening, text messages were flying around the district telling people to head to the beach for the show. We had some amazing photos sent to us this month showing the damage, thank you to our readers for your contributions.

Good to see Pauling Coulter protecting us mere unsuspecting ratepayers, after all she did say in a letter to the ed she would speak on our behalf at a council meeting last month, and we weren’t even asked. Gee thanks Pauline & BRRA! There will no doubt be more in the next edition, as this has been an ongoing saga for the last umpteen months.

The Yankalilla Show Society has introduced two new categories in this years show. The Yankabald Art Prize (set to rival the other similarly named prize). This is for a portrait in any medium of a local (living) identity. Also new is the “My Patch” where you have a 1 metre “patch” to display your wines, or make the best pizza, it is up to you. Great to see the show committee trying new initiatives.

The Yankalilla Area Commerce & Community Association (YACCA) is no more. has become extinct, is a dead parrot, has bitten the dust. Lets hope your businesses don’t do the same. We will still however bring you the valuable advice of Jim Emmett in his role as a Small Business Officer.

Meals On Wheels are desperate for some new volunteers, if you have a couple of spare hours, consider helping this worthy community service.

wo months of winter are now behind us and I hope the warmer weather will soon be with us. I personally hate the cold weather and the warmer weather will be most welcome.

Since the last issue of the Yankalilla news we have attended to five incidents and a police multi agency exercise at Victor Harbor. I will start with the exercise first. We were to launch our boats at Victor at 0830 hrs on Sunday the 24th of June and be ready for our briefing shortly after.

We were a bit concerned about the depth of water at the Victor ramp, with tide predictions showing not a lot of water we decided to drive the boat around by sea.

We arrived at the boat shed at 0530 hrs and the weather was not too flash with a north wind blowing and the forecast predicting to get worse, but with much discussion we decided to push on.

The trip from Wirrina to the Cape was very rough and when we turned the corner at the Cape for the run to Victor, the wind was blowing off the land as forecast and the sea was much calmer. We traveled reasonably close in and made very good time to Victor. Just on 0830 hrs. Sea Rescue 5 rounded the Bluff and entered the tranquil waters of Encounter Bay. The exercise went off very well and as soon as it was finished the return trip to Wirrina was started. It was much rougher on the return but the trip only took 20 minutes longer than the trip in the morning. Sea Rescue 5 traveled just on 140 nm. and used 146 litres of fuel, which is excellent for a craft of this size I must thank the crew of Steve Marshall, Jim Stacey, Bruce Stark and Rod Goddard for doing an excellent job on the day. It was a very good test of their navigational skills. Well done boys.

It was only a couple of weeks later that we were again called out to Victor when 20 kayak’s were hit by very strong wind and were in serious trouble. A crew was mobilized and SR5 was soon on the way to Victor this time by road as there was a high tide and plenty of water at the ramp. I believe there were 10 craft from Victor

Harbor Goolwa sea Rescue and 3 choppers already in the search. One of the searchers told me that some of the rescued were on the verge of hypothermia and in a bad way.

To cut a long story short while on route to the launch site a stop call was received as the last kayak was spotted by a rescue chopper a considerable distance off the coast heading into the Southern Ocean at about 10 knots. This group of people was extremely lucky and we were all amazed that thankfully there were no lives lost. It just goes to show how easy accidents can happen. It pays to take a very close look at the weather forecast before heading to sea, and don’t forget the volunteers who put their lives on the line to render assistance, some times using their own equipment, not to mention their lost time and expenses.

I would like to thank our radio operators who sit in our coms. van in all sorts of weather waiting for boaties who head out fishing to log on and off. It is becoming more noticeable that you the boating people are not using this free service. A couple of weeks ago there was thirty odd boats launched and only one logged on. It is very frustrating to the radio operators when this happens as they feel that they are just wasting their time sitting down at the ramp. When we fist started to provide this service we were getting in excess of 50 percent logging on. If the numbers of craft logging on does not improve we may have to have a hard look at this free service and consider other ways to use our time more productively. Don’t be shy give our radio operators a call. Just call “SEA RESCUE WIRRINA” and our operators will talk you through the call. It’s that simple, so give it ago.

Stormy transformation

ormanville Beach along with most of the SA coastline was recently lashed by storms, changing the appearance of the coastline dramatically. Little old Normanville Jetty sustained some minor damage to its decking and there was some minor damage to boardwalks in the area. For the moment, mind your step when you head down to the beach, that last one is a long way down.

I

n primary school Veronica realised she was different from the other children. Didn’t know how she knew, because she was probably too young to be able to define what it was that made her different. She just didn’t feel she belonged to the school community; She was always on the outer. That feeling of being on the fringe of society stayed with

her for at least 40 years.

It was after she’d grown and had children that she gathered enough skills to form a deep friendship.

Her dearest friend was one she came to know back in the 70’s; they recently had their 30th Anniversary. The feeling of fitting in came alive for her when she moved to take up residence in a small country town with her husband. Being surrounded by a rural community is so completely embracing, so fulfilling, yet at the same time demanding that it heals most flaws purely because of its accepting nature.

Let’s try to explain, Vonni’s childhood, in the city was far from ideal, her youth was far from ideal, so as soon as she was able to be responsible for herself she set about protecting herself from the world she’d experienced. Her only points of reference so far, painted a world that she’d become wary of, a world she could not trust for fear of further damage. This no doubt had a marked effect on her ability to socialize. She didn’t want to socialize, she wanted to be alone which was good for her, as that way she’d be safe.

When she was nine years old, her Uncle lived nearby. He was raising three daughters and a son on his own after her Aunt left him for another man. He took her under his wing and allowed her to spend time with his family, who were loving, gentle and kind. Two years later her Aunt, the new partner and their daughter moved overseas. Then Vonni’s Uncle broke her heart by taking his children and following his exwife.

Veronica’s anger at the world for allowing the abuse, the neglect, the hurt to happen was intense, which in turn allowed her to develop an inner power, a ruthless inner power. Everyone and anyone who crossed her path was fair game. She had no consideration for anyone else’s feelings after they’d crossed her. She would cut someone down verbally as soon as look at them, if it suited her purpose. The only thing that could still reduce her to a quivering mass was physical violence aimed at her. She’d never been able to stand up against it and doubted she ever would.

As a twenties something adult, her character had formed through a haze of abuse. She continued to feel the isolation experienced in childhood, but it had compounded with the isolation brought on through her anger, spitting out in every direction.

There were a couple of brave people who wrestled with the results of her hurt and broke through to the damaged person inside. One was her first husband who gave her two beautiful children, and the other is her friend still. Slowly she thawed in the warmth of love and could not place blame only at her husband’s door for that marriage ending and because of that, she grieved heavily when he passed away a few years later.

She continued to go through an intense learning process, which delivered some life skills, but still she was socially inept. She couldn’t make small talk if her life depended on it, she thought it trivial and a thorough waste of time. Her tongue still cut people to shreds; she was still using her anger power. She still had the feeling of living on the outside of society. Her Uncle, (who by now visited regularly), her girlfriend and now her children were the only ones who made her feel as if

she was acceptable. They were the only influence she paid attention to in her life.

When she moved to the country, it was like moving to Mars.

Everyone smiled when you passed them, whether you knew them or not. Everyone waved at you in the car as you drove past. Almost everyone stopped to have a chat in the supermarket, which became a meeting place that was hard to leave.

She started a business and people actually sought her out to get to know her. She can say with authority now, it was an element who wished to know all the latest goss from any sources, and they would befriend the local cat if it could spice up their life. But the main thing she learned was that in a rural town, people accept you as you are, you may be that person who seeks out gossip and passes it on, but everyone knows you do that and they accept you as that.

Everyone gets to know everyone.

Living in the city, she’d heard about, but never knew anyone who died of cancer, a brain tumour, a heart attack or any other disease you might like to mention. But living in a small country town we either know or know of everyone in town and its surrounds, and we know that person who has that health challenge and you feel their departure and the family’s loss, so consequently you are there to support and help them through.

Some people hate the ‘small town syndrome, but not Vonni. For someone like Veronica who’d been socially challenged all her life, it was comfortable. People heard about her, even though confidences weren’t broken, somehow they knew and yet they accept her, no matter how flawed she thought her personality was.

They chose to accept her either because of it or in spite of it.

She feels surrounded by a comfortable old shoe. It’s a bit twisted on the side, the leather is scuffed and a tiny bit lifted in places, the innersole is well worn and shows the imprint of the wearer even when it stands alone near the heater. The laces are brand new and add some pizzazz, but it’s the leather, the leather that is designed to give maximum support under all circumstances.

Our new name reflects more accurately the range of activities we are involved in and information which we have available to the general public. PEAK OIL – In May a small group of people gathered to hear James Ward from Flinders University lead a discussion on the topic of Peak Oil. We have copies of the DVDs which James presented for loan at the centre.

One of the DVDs – The Power of Community – provides an insight on how the people of Cuba overcame the issue of peak oil when trade sanctions against their country meant that their access to oil was significantly reduced. This DVD will be our feature DVD for the month of August so come in to the centre and watch it or put your name down to borrow a copy. In addition to the DVDs, we also have some literature about Peak Oil, including a handout called Peak Oil – what YOU can do about it. Call in to the centre to pick up a copy and

learn more about how you can contribute to reduced oil consumption in your everyday life.

SAVE OUR TREES

W

e had 15 people come to the first ‘appreciate a local tree’ session. We met for 30 minutes on Karen Hammatt and Ian Main’s property at the end of Glebe Street at Yankalilla on Saturday morning, 10 July.

We all experienced delight and awe standing under this majestic river red gum. Some shared readings and others created simple rituals to express these feelings.

How old is this tree? We don’t know, but a reasonable guess is, at least, a thousand years. It took 15 people to circle the tree to measure its girth.

How much has it seen? Ian Main told us a story about an old lady Doris Parkes, who remembered this tree when she was 10, ninety years ago. The little girl saw Aboriginal people dancing and singing under the tree. She said the tree looks the same now as it did then.

We saw a few birds, large and small, coming to the tree while we were there. Those who live in the vicinity said that the variety and numbers of birds has decreased markedly in this area over the past decade because of the numbers of trees removed near this old giant.

Ian Main showed us where four

large, old trees in the near vicinity had been removed in the past few years.

Lauren Garner told her son that she was missing his morning footy match to come and join the group to appreciate the tree. Her son, Edan,12, responded by writing the following poem for her to share.

he first stage of a five year plan has been completed this week.

The On-ground Action Plan prepared by Simon Cordingley from SA Urban Forest Biodiversity Program for the District Council of Yankalilla, was completed in March 2007. This plan is the blue print for the five year plan which will restore the Dune Area for future residents and public use in an ecologically friendly manner.

The Plan involves the removal of non-indigenous plants from the dune/reserve area and replanting

with native species with seedlings from locally collected seed. Other aspects are rationalisation of path ways and traffic management, weed control and protection of flora and fauna especially “The Hooded Plover”.

The implementation of the plan relies on the co-operation of the Local Community, Yankalilla C o u n ci l, N atu r al R es ourc e Management Board, Mission Australia and Green Corps with The Coast, Estuarine & Marine Officer (Mary-Alice Ballantine) as the co-ordinator.

“I would like to commend our local Member of Parliament Michael Pengilly and the Local Government Association which has been working with the Federal Government since June last year for funds to assist with the upgrade of our effluent systems. Council’s priority is to install a Community waste water management system within Carrickalinga which will provide direct benefits to the locality by improving health, better protecting water resources and reduce groundwater and surface water contamination.

“We will now sit down with the LGA to work out the detail of what will occur and what timeframes are involved. However, we are confident that our community will reap the significant benefits of the Statewide Waste Water Recycling Project to improve regional health through recycling,” Mayor Whitford said.

Environmental stewardship supports production increases

T

he experience gained in managing their beef cattle enterprise on the F l e u r i e u Mark & Lynette Peninsula, 80 kilometres south of Adelaide, has taught Mark and Lynette Higgins the importance of considering the impact of increasing beef production on the environment.

E n vir on me n ta l s te wa r d s hip underpins the family’s thinking, protects the land and is a stimulus for innovative ideas to increase production in a sustainable way.

Mark Higgins said proactive management on their farm, ‘Burnt Oak’, had resulted in the win-win of environmental rehabilitation together with increased beef production.

“A documentary on environmental dangers facing the platypus prompted us to consider what was happening on our own farm where four kilometres of permanent stream was exposed to continuous cattle grazing,” Mr Higgins said.

“Even at the very moderate stocking of 12 dry sheep equivalents (DSE) per hectare, great damage to sensitive land classes was taking place.

“With help from SA Primary Industries and Resources, we developed a whole farm plan in 1994 which identified and

segregated different land classes.”

Together with segregation of wet lands, rocky outcrops, steep slopes and remnant vegetation, pastures were also fenced according to their productivity.

“Construction of electric fencing and revegetation was a real community effort with labour supplied by volunteers from The South Australian Fly Fishers’ Association who were concerned about the future of the state’s creeks and rivers. We also received some funding help from the National Landcare Program,” Mr Higgins said.

With a plan for land management in place, the Higgins’ turned their attention to the livestock.

Although feed demand records had been kept since 1992, they were not compared with the feed supplied from the 700mm rainfall country until 1996.

“Our autumn calving herd of crossbred cattle almost doubled its demand for feed at a time when the pastures were at the lowest supply,” Mr Higgins said.

“In 1997 calving was delayed by 100 days which effectively lowered the feed demand by 25 tonnes of dry matter per month throughout autumn and saved several thousand dollars in herd health and supplementary feed costs.”

Attention has now turned to matching the livestock feed demand to the feed supplied by the

brown clay, loam soils supporting perennial grasses and sub clovers.

Mr Higgins said the introduction of a dairy/bull/beef enterprise in addition to the cow/calf enterprise utilised additional spring feed without greatly increasing autumn demand.

“By 2001 carcase beef sold had about doubled when compared to 1995 levels while DSE per hectare had risen to 23. At this level of production, feed utilisation was above 70%,” Mr Higgins said.

“This work is personally very satisfying.”

“While the farm has beautified with increasing biodiversity and improved water quality, production has increased to higher levels A environmental stewardship has prompted and led to higher levels of profitable beef production.”

Since 2001, the number of stock not intended for breeding has increased, while the cow/calf enterprise has been reduced.

“This has been a helpful management tool to adjust feed demand as seasons have adjusted feed supply. Furthermore, this change has benefited labour efficiency.”

Mr Higgins said Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) More Beef from Pastures’ The producer’s manual has some helpful tools for calculating the cost of production and pasture supply/demand.

“Our experience suggests that the information on segregating land

class es and environ men tal rehabilitation contained in The producer’s manual should not be overlooked in the pursuit of production. Rather, consideration of the land may lead to even higher production and greater personal satisfaction.”

In 1998 the Higgins’ family was awarded the prestigious Ibis award.

Recognised as the most significant in the area of rural conservation in South Australia, this award aims to encourage farmers to adopt innovative and sustainable practices to protect the environment and improve their properties.

As a producer advocate for More Beef from Pastures program, Mr Higgins will outline his operation to other producers at the MLA More Beef from Pastures Adelaide Hills Expo at the Hahndorf Resort on Tuesday, 10 July, from 9am to 3pm.

The MLA More Beef from Pastures’ program presents producers with proven tools and techniques to boost their production and profitability. Areas covered include setting directions, stock control, pasture growth and utilisation, cattle genetics, weaner throughput, herd health and welfare and meeting market specifications.

Combined Charities Event Trotting Track Victor Harbor Oxfam Australia is planning a full day event at the Victor Harbor Trotting Track on Sunday 30th September of the October long weekend form 10am to 4pm.

WANTED – COMPETITORS – STALLS – ENTERTAINERS Commercial operators are invited to set up a stall or van for a small fee for the day. All proceeds of that and gate takings will be going to Oxfam Australia. The event will be marketed widely to maximize crowd attendance.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE DAY The day will include music and entertainment, food stalls, trash and treasure stalls, other retail stalls and amusements. Yankalilla Art Group “A winter-warming gourmet experience.” … We were certainly not disappointed. Sue and Paul of Corinium Roman Villa, spoilt us rotten with their kind hospitality and great food.

All members who attended the session, whether painting indoors or out, enjoyed the opportunity to paint a wide variety of scenic views or to develop already started work. Even the weather tried to assist our efforts by providing bright sunny spells between the spasmodic showers. Looking to the future, I have arranged for a Mosaic Workshop to be held next March (2008) at the Villa, so if you are interested, get your creative juices flowing and begin a collection of coloured tiles in readiness.

August 2nd we warmly welcome Terry Lewitzka for an oil painting session, so now would be a good time to check on the oil paints and canvas. Earlier in the year he, and his wife Lorraine, mounted a very successful exhibition at gallery 88.

Congratulations Jacky Werner on taking the plunge from Art Group member to being accepted as a member of gallery 88.

We do not have special exhibitions in July or August, but keep your eyes open between September and December when there will be fresh exhibitors each month to whet your artistic appetites. From time to time goodbyes have to be said and on this occasion it is to Ken Hutt who is taking a year’s sabbatical beginning this month. We all wished him well for the future.

We are also pleased to see that our recent invalids, Doris Mitchell and Pat Hagan are well on the way to recovery. Our thoughts are with you both.

n June our guest speakers were from the Evacuees Association, Barbara Walton opening with a brief history of the Pied Piper project which operated in Britain during World War 11. The British government had drawn up the project in 1938, its aim being to remove children from London and other areas that were likely to be bombed.

Joan Anderson, evacuated with her three sisters from London in 1939, was only four. She remembers wearing a name tag and being put on a coach, the wrench from her mother unbearable. At each stop, their names called, children were handed over to strangers. Joan, separated from her sisters, remembers being unable to eat. Then the worst happened. She became a bedwetter, punishment ranging from being smacked to being made to stand naked, her knickers on her head. She lived in five different homes, always sent on because she was a bed wetter, these constant changes resulting in a poor education. Near the end of the war she met up with her sisters and shared a room with them. They tried to imagine family life, but had forgotten their father. She was eleven when the war over, she was reunited with her family. The bed wetting stopped one week later. Joan never spoke of those traumatic years but is now able to share them with other evacuees.

Doris Redgate remembers being among children at a railway station, the mothers crying. She and her sister were sent to their mother's brother, a virtual stranger, who, with his wife, subjected his nieces to mental abuse, their clothing, and their mother, held up to ridicule. Left alone in cinemas the girls waited outside in the dark to be picked up. If they cried their Uncle would be angry. When in 1939 they went home for Christmas their mother kept them. 'If the worst comes to the worst we'll all die together,' she said. During the Battle of Britain they watched dog fights and when bombs were falling, ran to public shelters. Arriving

late at the shelter, their usual spot taken, they found another. When the shelter took a direct hit the people in 'their' spot were killed. For Doris the six years of wartime dangers were nothing compared with the hopelessness and helplessness of an evacuee.

Dennis Haines, ten years old at the time of his evacuation, remembers name tags and the rubbery smell of gasmasks. For him evacuation was a great adventure - and an eye opener. Every time the husband left the home he'd been sent to, an 'uncle' moved in.

Dennis returned home a month later but was again evacuated when heavy raids began. Keen to experience gunfire and bombs he was unhappy about being sent away, nor was he happy with the bullying he received from the 'host' family's son. After six months his parents brought him home and his wish was granted: he experienced fire bombing, incendiary bombs, and buzz bombs day and night.

Evacuation had a profound effect on children's lives, though there were happy times such as when American servicemen gave them chewing gum. The talks ended with the poignant comment that throughout it all Vera Lynn, signing off on a radio programme, sang 'Goodnight Children Everywhere'.

Yankalilla Threads Quilting Group- Birthday Celebrations

n Tuesday 26th June THREADS celebrated 15 years of quilting. Present members had decided at the beginning of the year to invite all members past and present to celebrate the 15 years of friendship, creativity and community spirit. This has been the essential ingredient of the meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month since 1992. A great deal of research was done to trace the whereabouts of members who had moved on, and about 20 members were traced, with 16 of them being able to attend.

Sanders Hall at the Uniting Church in Yankalilla was bright with quilts hanging all round the walls, on racks over chairs, the piano and even the alter rail wall brought into use.

Quilters started arriving at about 11 o’clock and were served morning tea. People had driven from all over - Adelaide, Goolwa and Port Elliot, Victor Harbor, so a cuppa was very welcome.

The conversation soon got going and it was hard to hear yourself speak as old friendships were taken up and memories relived.

A break for lunch followed by a birthday cake about a foot high made by Kathy Pippos and then “Show and Tell”. Every quilt on display had a story and it was very interesting to hear how and why a quilt had been put together. One of the first quilts made by the group had been sewn out of scraps of materials from the costumes made by local ladies to celebrate the States 150th Jubilee in 1986 and Australia’s 200th birthday in 1988. It was made as a crazy patchwork, and was truly a celebration of the art

of quilting.

It is a well known fact that people who enjoy any sort of craft live longer, because they are always planning their next project and usually have of UFOs (unfinished objects). So it will be a long time before any of the ladies who belong to THREADS past and present go to that big fabric warehouse in the sky.

So if you would like to join us, please come along to the Sanders Hall on any second and fourth Tuesday of the month. You will meet some lovely ladies and have a really friendly time.

All proceeds from this event go to charities, and over the years thousands of dollars have been raised. This is a show not to be missed. Light refreshments will be available.

ustralian Poetry Slam is coming to Yankalilla in September.

Slamming is a form of spoken word performance and six South Australian Libraries are organising slam events as part of a national competition.

Being a “slammer” involves a 2 minute original spoken word performance - poetry, hip hop, monologue, story etc. Five judges are selected randomly from the audience and hold up score cards after each performance. The 2 performers with the highest scores will receive prizes and have the opportunity to compete in a state final.

he Rotary Club of Yankalilla held its Annual Change-Over Dinner on Tuesday 26 June 2007 at the Yankalilla Bowling Club.

The dinner was attended by 42 Rotarians, partners and guests, including Yankalilla Mayor Peter and wife Madge Whitford, and Assistant District Governor Dr Andrew and Allison Benson.

Outgoing President Michael Rice inducted Josephine Thomas as President for the 2007-08 Rotary Year. A special highlight of the evening was the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Mayor Peter Whitford, a past member of the Rotary Club of Yankalilla. Peter was presented with this prestigious Rotary award in recognition of his outstanding services to Rotary and the Community.

Yankalilla Karate Club

he Yankalilla Karate Club continues to grow since its inception in February 2005.

During July the club founder and chief instructor Bruce “Strop” Arnold spent 3 weeks touring the eastern states with his two children, Zac and Shannon. They all trained with different clubs along the way and competed in the Queensland State Titles.

Zac achieved a gold medal for

their particular age/rank divisions.

embers braved a wet and windy day to attend the July Annual Meeting. We welcomed back Heather Pile after her recent hip operation, conducted the election of offices.

Heather thanked all members for a job well done during our 70th year. Special mention to Doris Gilbert who will retire from 3 years as treasurer and Maureen Stone for her outstanding work as Handicraft Secretary. Positions for 2007 – 2008 are President – Glenda Oats, Vice President – Doris Gilbert, Secretary – Cathy Reid, Treasurer – Shirley Jones, Handicraft Officer – Maureen Stone and committee members Edna Stevens, Margaret Schubert and Joyce Hall. A new programme will be put together prior to the

Handicraft meeting on 25th July. Anyone is welcome to come and join us for Handicraft – bring along whatever craft you are doing or you can learn a new one. Meeting days will remain on the first Wednesday of each month at 1.30pm and we welcome new members. While handicraft will be the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1.30pm, both held at our clubrooms at Bungala St. It was decided to continue the flower competition and point system, which Maureen Stone won over the last year. We hope more members will enter the flower competition this year. Birthday greetings were extended to Margaret Schubert and Heather Pile for the month of July. On July 27th some off our

members attended the Cundell Group AGM at Victor Harbor. Our Branch was very pleased to receive a small grant from the Yankalilla Council to install a hot water service. Our next meeting is 1st August and we will have our delegate to State Council, Shirley Jones talking on how the money raised through SA CWA and distributed by ACWW to the countries affected by the Tsunami disaster. Also she will report on the World conference held in Finland. Roll call will be your favourite recipe, so looking forward to all members attending and visitors are welcome too.

The Squirrel & the Grasshopper REST OF THE WORLD VERSION he squirrel works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building and improving his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The Grasshopper thinks he's a fool, and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

The Australian press informs people that they should be ashamed that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so while others have plenty.

The Labor Party, Greenpeace, Animal Rights and The Grasshopper Council of Australia demonstrate in front of the squirrel's house. The ABC, interrupting a cultural festival special from St Kilda with breaking news, broadcasts a multi cultural choir singing "We Shall Overcome".

Bill Shorten rants in an interview with Laurie Oakes that the squirrel has grown rich off the backs of grasshoppers, and calls for an immediate tax hike on the squirrel to make him pay his "fair share" and increases the charge for squirrels to enter Melbourne city centre.

In response to pressure from the media, the Government drafts the Economic Equity and Grasshopper Anti Discrimination Act, retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The squirrels' taxes are reassessed. He is taken to court and fined for failing to hire grasshoppers as builders for the work he was doing on his home and an additional fine for contempt when he told the court the grasshopper did not want to work.

The grasshopper is provided with a council house, financial aid to furnish it and an account with a local taxi firm to ensure he can be socially mobile. The squirrel's food is seized and redistributed to the more needy members of society, in this case the grasshopper.

imposed retroactive taxes, the squirrel has to downsize and start building a new home. The local authority takes over his old home and utilises it as a temporary home for asylum seeking cats who had hijacked a plane to get to Australia as they had to share their country of origin with mice. On arrival they tried to blow up the airport because of Australians apparent love of dogs.

The cats had been arrested for the international offence of hijacking and attempted bombing but were immediately released because the police fed them pilchards instead of salmon whilst in custody. Initial moves to then return them to their own country were abandoned because it was feared they would face death by the mice. The cats devise and start a scam to obtain money from people's credit cards.

A 60 Minutes special shows the grasshopper finishing up the last of the squirrels' food, though Spring is still months away, while the council house he is in, crumbles around him because he hasn't bothered to maintain the house.

He is shown to be taking drugs.

Inadequate government funding is blamed for the grasshopper's drug "Illness".

The cats seek recompense in the Australian courts for their treatment since arrival in Australia.

The grasshopper gets arrested for stabbing an old dog during a burglary to get money for his drug habit. He is imprisoned but released immediately because he

has been in custody for a few weeks. He is placed in the care of the probation service to monitor and supervise him. Within a few weeks he has killed a guinea pig in a botched robbery.

A commission of enquiry, that will eventually cost $10,000,000 and state the obvious, is set up.

Additional money is put into funding a drug rehabilitation scheme for grasshoppers and legal aid for lawyers representing asylum seekers is increased. The asylum seeking cats are praised by the government for enriching Australia's multicultural diversity and dogs are criticised by the government for failing to befriend the cats.

The grasshopper dies of a drug overdose. The usual sections of the press blame it on the obvious failure of government to address the root causes of despair arising from social inequity and his traumatic experience of prison.

They call for the resignation of the minister.

The cats are paid a million pounds each because their rights were infringed when the government failed to inform them there were mice in Australia.

The squirrel, the dogs and the victims of the hijacking, the bombing, the burglaries and robberies have to pay an additional percentage on their credit cards to cover losses, their taxes are increased to pay for law and order and they are told that they will have to work beyond 65 because of a shortfall in government funds.

‘Thisldo’ and ‘Gunnado,’

Thisldo

alking past a little house one day I noticed its name – Thisldo. Another time I passed a farmers property called Gunnado.

Property names are interesting but I have to say that Thisldo and Gunnado will not do.

Thisldo is a good thought for those who are happy with a humble home. But should we have an attitude of anything less than proper standards then it won’t do. How many things have I had to do again because I said in effect, ‘this’ll do’?

‘Do it well and do it once,’ was a slogan of a famous service club.

Shoddy work is inexcusable. No matter whether we do something for ourselves or for others we must not pass it off as ‘this’ll do.’

When it comes to issues of health and safety ‘this’ll do’ simply won’t do. I wouldn’t want a surgeon stitching me up in a hurry and saying, ‘this’ll do.’ Who wants to fly in an aeroplane serviced by those who said ‘this’ll do’?

Intention only Gunnado is more serious – it has achieved nothing – all that’s there is the intention.

Someone wisely said, ‘Don’t put off until tomorrow what can be done today.’

We need self discipline in our duties that propels us off our backside and into action.

Get it done and then sit back. A week or so ago I heard about a man who would throw his bills in the fire and wait for later ones to come.

Deferring a duty is dangerous. If the car needs repairs do it today. If our cows wander onto the road fix the fences pronto before some-one is injured.

Well done ‘Thisldo’ and ‘Gunnado,’ are addressed in the Bible. Of Jesus we read that the people were overwhelmed by amazement and said, ‘He has done everything well.’

He told a story about certain stewards with these commendations, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter into the joy of your Lord.’

Of Jesus Himself, his Father in Heaven said, ‘This is my greatly loved Son in whom I am well pleased.’

When Jesus, from the cross uttered the words, ‘It is finished,’ they were not words of defeat or finality. They were the strong terms of accomplishment. He had effected perfect atonement for our sins. Nothing could be added to it - nothing taken from it.

Those who believe that he died for them will find forgiveness and a new life of fellowship with God.

Act now Gunnado often results in ‘never do’ or ‘didn’t do.’ I intended to visit a friend – and almost did. He was killed before I saw him.

Good intentions can fail if we don’t promptly act. Maybe there’s a letter you should write, an apology to make or something to put right with another.

Gunnado won’t do as far as God is concerned. ‘Behold, now is the day of salvation,’ warns the Bible. 2 Cor 6:2 Without warning and within seconds we can drop into the abyss of eternity. The Bible says: ‘Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.’ Isaiah 55:6-7 We may well defer getting married, doing studies or whatever. We should however, never defer putting things right with others or responding to God who loves us and who, in Jesus Christ, gave himself for us that we may enjoy life and eternity with him.

Discard any thoughts of thisldo and gunnado and do what we ought to do.

Nine of our riding members travelled to Monarto for this major pony club event. Here’s how everyone went.

PC grade 1 – Ryan Fletcher rode ‘Jo’ beautifully to come in 1st.

PC grade 3 - Carly Wenham on ‘Ceres’ worked with some challenging behaviour to come in PC grade 4 – Bella Fyfe on ‘Blue’ ; Alana Yeates on ‘Molly’ PC grade 5 – Kat on ‘Hugo’ rode HC (non competitive) and completed.

AL 4 – Ryan Fletcher on ‘Snap’ came 1st. (Christine was tempted to ride him but passed to Ryan after a tumble on arrival Friday); Dagmar Klingenbrock on ‘Double Stack’ came in 7th; and Anthea Yeates on ‘Miss Meg’ AL 5 – Helen Maidment on ‘Roses’ FH&PC was in charge of the ‘Secretary Shed’ for the week-end.

Libby, Emma and Yvonne travelled up to tend to this on Saturday. Sunday, the job was shared between Deb, Tish and the riders. Emma came back and ‘jump-judged’ for the crosscountry in awful cold windy conditions – thank goodness for horse-rugs – along with riders between their rides. Thanks for the huge effort!

Everyone returned with all their fingers and toes despite temperatures of –2 degrees.

It actually doesn’t occur in the next 12 months so let’s try and remember for the future.

On that, it is just as important for you to let rally coordinators know if you will not be attending a rally – so please, if you can’t make it, give Christine or Alisha a call, sms, or email, so they have the opportunity to adjust the rally accordingly.

We hope to see you all at our Combined Competition, and on the Sunday for our Rally.

I wish to offer heartfelt thanks to Libby and Ryan who have worked their butts off over the last two years as Rally Coordinators. Ryan has moved to Mt Gambier for 6 months to work more closely with his instructor and Libby is focussing on business ventures.

Libby, of course will still be joining us along with Marlee and I suspect Ryan will pop in to see us from time to time. The best of luck to both of you.

Good Luck also to Christine and Alisha, who have huge shoes to fill, but I reckon they have the energy and creativity to do it.

ANIMAL MATTERS INDOOR SPRAYING

U

rine spraying is one of the cat's normal scent-marking behaviours, which also include scratching, rubbing, chinning, bunting (depositing secretions from head glands on twigs etc.) and middening (leaving faeces uncovered). By using these scent markers cats can deter others from their range, and cats which share a hunting range can avoid one another without coming into direct conflict.

Spraying is also designed to help females 'on heat' to attract males for breeding. The cat stands with its tail vertical (often quivering at the tip) and squirts urine backwards onto a vertical surface.

Cats may spray when frustrated, upset or subject to competition or challenge.

Spraying can be interpreted as the cat increasing its own sense of security by surrounding itself with signals of its own occupancy in its territory. The more anxious the individual, the more he or she will need familiar odours for comfort. All cats, male or female, neutered or not, may spray, usually

outside, but undesexed toms and queens in oestrus will spray more.

Most n eutered p et cats feel sufficiently relaxed in their own home to not spray. They identify it instead by rubbing scent from their body. The most common sites for indoor spraying are near entrances to the house or room, curtains and new items brought into the house, e.g., plastic bags, new furniture etc., although individuals may have their own idiosyncratic targets such as washing machines, video players or even certain people. While there may be no 'quick fix' solution in some cases, helping to find and understand the motivation for the behaviour will help you to work towards a solution.

There can be many triggers for a cat marking indoors such as the arrival of a new cat, dog or person in the family, or a bereavement; changes in the home area such as furniture or new carpets. Disruptions such as building work; or installation of a cat flap which can make the cat feel insecure indoors. In rare cases, spraying can be a learned attention-getting behaviour.

Occasionally urine marking may be carried out from a squatting position usually on the floor, but often on bedcovers or chairs. The cat may still use the litter tray for eliminating larger volumes of urine. This often occurs when owners leave their cat at home, but in their neighbour's care when they go on holiday and may be a form of 'associative 'marking - the cat feeling anxious because it is alone, is relieved when it associates its smell with that of the owner - usually in a spot where the owner's smell is concentrated such as on the bed or armchair.

Cats marking indoors clearly require a clear and extensive approach to diagnosis of cause(s) and careful development of treatment which will not unsettle them even more! It is

vital to discover under which situations the problems occur as treatment often depends on defining any specific anxiety-inducing trigger (s) for the behaviour.

Some of the following questions are helpful. When did the problem first occur? Which people or other animals are normally present in the house?

What are the attitudes of all the family towards the cat? What are they doing before, during and after the problem occurs?

Are there any other behaviour problems in the cat or its feline housemates and is it receiving any medical treatment? Where is the marking occurring? The layout of the house and even the garden may be important.

Are there rival cats outside? What is the cat's daily routine? Does it have free access to outside? Where does it eat and sleep, how much time is spent interacting

elcome to our new members. We are looking forward to you all joining in with our activities Happy Birthday to members and friends celebrating their birthdays in August.

Best wishes to members and friends who are on the sick list and recovering from their stay in hospital.

Thankyou to the management committee and all our members who have supported our club in many different ways over the past 12 months. The clubs membership has increased quite considerably over this time, it is great to have our new members contributing to our organisation and joining in with the activities that are provided. It has been a very rewarding time for me as president and I wish the incoming management committee for 2007 – 2008 all the very best.

70 of our members who attended the lunch at the Middleton Tavern last month which our club provided as a thankyou for all members was well received. A friendly and happy day was had by all, excellent food, facilities and service. I thank everybody who made this day most enjoyable.

The club is working on the program for every generation activities in October; the highlight of the month will be Unley High School’s music team who will be performing at our complex on October 17th.

his morning I went for my usual walk on the Normanville beach after the big storm on 4th of July. The jetty sustained some damage to the planking but the erosion of the beach was something to see. The foundations of the original kiosk were exposed and some of the lawn in front of the surf club had disappeared resulting in a small cliff. All along the beach to Carrickalinga the dunes had taken some erosion with several beach access steps ending in mid air.

t is with much regret that the decision was made at our recently held Special General Meeting (SGM), to dissolve the Yankalilla Area Commerce & Community Association Inc (YACCA).

The past few years has seen a steady decline in membership numbers for YACCA, which has led to insufficient representation on the Executive Committee.

delaide Biplanes in Aldinga was successful in getting Australian Tourism Development Program funding for a new tourist attraction in the Fleurieu Peninsula “A Hanger”. This is a very competitive funding process and only 3 other SA operators received funding from across the state.

The Hanger will be used as a display (interpretation) area for tourist and house a new café for those either taking joy flights or just viewing. It will really be a great addition to the area, especially for those Activity Seekers.

Letter to Yankalilla Residents

n the 21st of June I attended the Yankalilla Council meeting and presented them with your petition and a submission (letter) as to why we request council consider Amalgamating with one of the three adjoining Council areas.

At this Council meeting I did address the committee and stated that we made a mistake in the original figures presented.

1. We had forgotten to advise you about the increase in council STEDS. 2. We also omitted to tell you that Victor Harbor Council charges approx $195 per rate able property, then they charge a percentage of the property value above that.

I never stated that the figures presented to you were wrong. The figures we presented were taken from the Yankalilla Council Draft Budget, and other papers from Council. Once more Council conveniently misrepresented the content of my presentation. This does not take away from the fact that we pay more rates per property than Victor Harbor ratepayers.

On Thursday the 5th of July I was an observer at the Council Meeting. All Council members voted to borrow the 3.5 million to build their new chambers, now being called a "Civic Centre". A discussion about the Amalgamation request followed, Council stated they would contact all the people who signed the petition, inviting them to attend the Council meeting on the 19th of July.

I contacted the relevant government departments who informed me that you do not have to attend this meeting. If you would like to attend, do so by all means, however if council ask you to attend, their behaviour could be considered as harassing and threatening.

Benefits of Amalgamation

n the 21st of June I attended the Yankalilla Council meeting requesting the District Council of Yankalilla consider the benefits of Amalgamation with one of the three adjoining Councils. I addressed the meeting and stated that we made a mistake in the original figures presented.

1. We had forgotten to advise ratepayers about the increase in council STEDS from $365 to $405.

2. We also omitted to explain that Victor Harbor Council charges $195 per rate able property, and then they charge a percentage of the property value above that.

This does not take away from the fact that we pay more rates per property than Victor harbor ratepayers.

At this meeting I stated the need for council to notify the community that there was an existing debt of $2,923,715, so how could residents & ratepayers make an informed decision about the draft budget.

Council posted letters inviting all signatories to a meeting on the 19th of July at Normanville Chambers.

I contacted the relevant government departments who informed me that people who signed the Amalgamation petition do not have to attend this council meeting, unless they would like to.

We would be delighted if anyone from the community decides to attend with us.

Personally I am very disappointed with the District Council of Yankalilla. I recently made an official complaint about the way they treated me during council meetings. This complaint was going to be heard by the people whom I had complained about, so I withdrew my complaint. Unhappily it appears to me that council does not follow its “Code of Conduct” I am also concerned with the fact that councils “Community Consultation policy” is one sided.

Councillors voted to borrow 3.5 million before considering the community’s request that they consider amalgamation, which would mean there would be no need to borrow such a huge amount of money.

It therefore appears to me that council is not interested in what residents & ratepayers have to say.

The editorial on the benefits of Amalgamation printed in the Victor Times on July the 12th says it all, a great editorial, and congratulations to the person who wrote that article.

I voted against the motion, and whilst I did not call for a division to place the fact on record it was well noted in the meeting .Therefore I require you to advise all the people with whom you corresponded in the above e-mail of this fact .

I have maintained a steadfast opposition to the major refurbishment of the chambers and was instrumental , at the December meeting of Council , in having a recision motion for original borrowing in the 2006/7 thus halting the project to enable meaningful consultation with ratepayers and consideration of other options as to the future requirement as to administration centre / civic centre.

I would appreciate your prompt action in this matter so that further misunderstandings do not occur.

I noted that in the original vote you were the only councillor who voted against borrowing the 3.5 million. I also noted that later in the day a new vote was taken and you said something to the affect that "I may as well join you, so I am not alone" and put your hand up. I suppose this can only be checked by reading the minutes, however the last time the minutes were updated was in April. So did you vote or didn't you vote to borrow the 3.5 million dollar?

Amalgamation Proposal

ouncil recently received a petition from the Bungala Residents and Ratepayers Association calling for Council to explore amalgamation opportunities with adjoining Councils. A full copy of Council response to the petition can be read on Councils Website www.yankalilla.sa.gov.au The petition suggests the reasons for pursuing amalgamation are amongst other issues .

1. To establish cost efficiencies and economies of scale for Councils operations.

2. The level of debt incurred and proposed to be incurred by Council is unsustainable.

3. The current high level of rates paid.

Council at its meeting held on the 19th of July considered a report on all the issues raised within the petition and resolved That the District Council of Yankalilla does not consider the issues raised in the petition presented by the Bungala Residents and Ratepayers Association warrant the formulation of a structural reform proposal to include the neighbouring Councils .

Council resolution was based on the following report.

To establish cost efficiencies and economies of scale for Councils operations.

The District Council of Yankalilla acknowledge that our size and location sometimes makes achieving economies of scale difficult and therefore Council has actively sought to cooperate with our adjoining Councils to provide services and share resources on a regional level.

Detailed below is a list of those areas of Councils operations where it combines with other Local Government Authorities to provide more effective and efficient services.

Community Services Economic development Waste management CWMS (effluent management) Natural Resource Management Sport and Recreation Animal management Transport Information Technology Governance Corporate Services Council believes that it achieves significant financial and political advantages for its community through its cooperation with its neighbouring Councils. Council does recognise that there are other opportunities that council has yet to explore and therefore is currently undertaking a review of services with the Alexandrina, Victor Harbor and Kangaroo Island Councils as part of the Local Government Association Shared Services Project.

The level of debt incurred and proposed to be incurred by Council is unsustainable.

The Local Government Association of S.A. recently commissioned a report into the financial sustainability of all Councils throughout the State and one of the subjects dealt with in the review was the role of borrowing and Local Governments use of debt.

Council’s prudent use of debt;

The Review Board published the following findings and made the following recommendations;

Council

If the ratepayers and the community are aware of the long term ramifications of an unduly low level of debt (and artificially constrained rates increases) – that is the deferral of vital renewal and replacement of infrastructure – they would most likely think again before pressuring Councils to avid borrowing or, if there were no other option, to keep rates increases at artificially low levels.”

Council provides services for its community and pays for these services with the rates it collects from the community. The rate revenue is supplemented by loan funds to prevent large increases or decreases in the rates charges to fund capital projects.

The level of rating that Council collects depends on what services the community through its Elected Members requests to be provided.

Conclusion There are benefits and disadvantages associated with an amalgamation and Council in considering whether to pursue an amalgamation needs to clearly and coherently look at what the community will receive as a benefit and what it will lose from the amalgamation. To objectively analyse the benefits and disadvantages an external consultant would need to be engaged by the councils wishing to pursue this matter.

Council should amalgamate for the right reasons, to provide benefits for the community; the amalgamation process should not be used as a means to prevent Council from undertaking a specific project or action.

Council trust that the information provided in this report in answer to the issues raised in the petition received explains the reasons why Council has resolved not to pursue an amalgamation with its neighbouring Councils.

Said Mayor Cr. Peter Whitford The highlights of the 2007/08 Annual Business Plan and Budget are; Council are introducing a community transport system which while in its infancy will help to overcome the lack of public transport which has been an issue within the community for many years.

The unprecedented development growth in the district of 4.3% has provided Council with the funds to undertake new initiatives and projects without a substantial impact on the individual ratepayers.

Aldridge and Martins roads Pedestrian Bridge across the Bungala River on Williss Drive Flinders Drive , Williss Drive , Main South Road Footpaths Valley View Drive – drainage Funding Council will fund both its operational activities and new initiatives’ through rates and loan borrowings.

Councils rating policy includes; A rate differential between urban and rural properties of 10% Rate capping for residents, primary producers effected by the exceptional circumstances drought and pensioners and self funded retirees Exceptional development growth within our district of 4.3% has allowed Council to retain the urban rate in the dollar at the previous year’s figure of 0.4227 cents in the dollar and a modest increase of 2.8% in the rural rate to 0.3804 cents in the dollar.

Council will access loan funds of $4.96 million dollars and these borrowings will result in Council’s debt repayment ratio (annual repayments as a % of rate revenue) increasing from 10.48% currently to 18.48%, well within Council’s ability to repay.

I

n June 2001, in the midst of bloody violence and deep mistrust that typifies the conflict between Arabs and Israelis, a Palestinian family made an unusual gesture of goodwill and neighbourliness.

Mazen Djulani was 34 years old when he was fatally shot in the head in east Jerusalem. His parents instantly donated the vital organs, including the heart, of their dead son so that vital, life-saving transplants could be carried out on four Israelis.

Isn’t it extraordinary? Mazen’s father said he wanted to save lives and to live in peace with the Israelis. I’m sure that sentiment is voiced by many on both sides of the conflict.

David Cohen, the father of one of those who received a life-saving organ, expressed his surprise at the gesture of the Djulani family. ‘It is really touching, especially in these days when relations are so tense’, he said. ‘This noble family comes and teaches us that it is possible to do things in a different way’.

When Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan, He pointed to a noble person who showed that

things could be done in a different way. The Samaritan that gave aid to the traveller, assaulted by highway robbers, was a man from a different and despised people. The Samaritans lived in great tension with the Jews, to the point of hating each other. Yet, without thinking of his own safety or the nationality of the injured man, this Samaritan tended him and provided for his care in an inn.

There are many in our community who render aid without judgement and without setting boundaries, as the Samaritan did. Think of our nurses, ambulance officers, SES volunteers and fire brigade members to name a few. The major churches have their welfare arms who work in a non-judgmental way.

‘That’s fine’, you might say, ‘A lot of these people are paid to do this work. They have no alternative but to care for those they come across.’ But I ask you; just how good is nurse, or any member of the other organizations, who has no calling to make a difference in the world, to help where they can?

Caring is more than just fixing the illness, putting

out the fire. It’s about reaching out to people in difficult situations. It is something that you and I can be involved in.

Back in 1991, in the USA, a woman in a red car drew up to a toll booth on a major bridge and gave the attendant seven tickets. She said, ‘I’m paying for the next six cars’. As the next six cars passed, the attendant told them their toll had been paid for by the lady in the red car. This woman had been inspired by a sentence written by Anne Herbert: ‘Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty’.

Anne Herbert believed that ‘random kindness’ was capable of generating a tidal wave. Such ‘random kindness’ awakens something deep inside the human heart. Perhaps it raises a question for all of us: ‘How might I go and do the same?’

A magazine had an article about the lady in the red car. It said: Like all revolutions, guerilla goodness begins slowly, with a single act. Let it be yours.

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 One of the paramount teachings of the Bible is that of the second coming or return of Jesus Christ to rule over the earth in the Kingdom of God. Many things combine to tell us that the “long time” is near its end, and that we may look for that happy event of his re-appearing at no very distant date.

We want to consider over a number of articles the effect that his re-appearing will produce among men; the state of things he will establish on the earth.

n Sunday 1st July, Normanville Surf Life Saving Club held its Annual General meeting. The meeting was well attended and positions were filled as follows: Patrons - Graham and Rosemary Olsson President - Geoff Moffatt Captain - Todd Scheer Secretary/Registrar - Brian Matthews Treasurer - Marg Hancock Club House Manager/Promotions and Publicity - Barbara Matthews Vice Captain - Mick Shipard Boat Captain/IRB - Mitch Olsson Jones Captain of Competition - Bob Menhennett Fund Raising - Les Schwartz OHS Officer- Todd Scheer The Committee is looking forward to the coming year and will continue to ensure that NSLSC provides its usual high quality service in maintaining safety levels on our beach, and in making the Club a focus for positive events for people of all ages in our community.

Cabin Fever held on 30th June was well attended by the younger set in our community. The bands were excellent (even appealing to us oldies). A great evening was had by all and we look forward to hosting similar events in the future.

The Club would like to thank Nat LePage for his time, energy and creativity in helping the Club in the organising and running of this event.

Our next event will be held in August.

Everybody is welcome to come along and help us celebrate “New Years Eve in August”. The evening will include spit roasted lamb, pork and beef, followed by dessert. After dinner you can have some fun with karaoke while waiting for the big countdown. The club will be open from 5:00pm onwards in case you feel like coming down and having a drink around the barbie. If

that’s too early for you come a little later, dinner will be served around 6:30pm.

Tickets for this event include dinner and entertainment.

Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre Starting Right – Eating Right Staff and children at Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre are ‘Starting Right-Eating Right’. We are one of a number of South Australian Children’s centres that have achieved the Start Right-Eat Right Award (SRER) for supporting parents to provide nutritious food for children and the use of good food hygiene practices at our centre.

Yankalilla Show Cover design competition

hank you to everyone who entered the Yankalilla Show Cover design competition.

The entries received where all very well done which made the job of choosing winners very difficult.

Congratulation to Rebecca Parr who won 1st Prize of $50 plus $50 worth of art supplies Rebecca’s design will be on the front cover the 2007 125th Yankalilla Show Book.

Because of the high standard of entries it has been decided to award a 2nd Prize of $20 which has been awarded to Jack Fretwell whose design will appear on

the back of the Show Book.

Also each winning $10 are the designs which were short listed in the competition. These designs will be used as posters promoting the Show. So look forward to seeing the talents of our young artist designers decorating our district.

ouncil acknowledge that the recent drought has affected the district’s rural sector and has introduced a policy which will offer some additional relief in relation to the payment of rates.

Those ratepayers who have been able to obtain assistance as a result of the Fleurieu being declared an Exceptional Circumstances drought Relief region can apply to council to have the increases in their rates

account from 2006/07 to the current year capped at 7.5%.
