Dog registrations are due before the end of August - for all those that do the right thing - which I am sure is everyone who is reading this… right?

The Yankalilla Show is fast approaching for those who want to enter their exhibits, run a stall or are involved in some way. For those that aren’t directly involved, sit back and wait for the first weekend in October, then get along to one of the best country shows that is still in existence - and not showing any signs of disappearing in the foreseeable future.

Despite what the Adelaide retailers think, Christmas is not that close yet! So we won’t mention it this month!

What we are having a lot of at the moment is a major housing boom. The number of subdivisions evolving out of the peaceful and serene countryside is greater than it has been for many years.

Now what we need is infrastructure and maybe even public transport to support the future influx of residents. Unless of course they remain empty part time holiday shacks.

For those who like to get out and about the social scene in our district has certainly been alive and well recently. Live music, themed

dinner evenings with more planned in the near future, check out the entertainment pages for an update.

It seems that most of the residents out there must be OK with the councils proposed $4m for the new council chambers, only one written item this month regarding this subject.

There is much more interest in whether a minor road in the back blocks of Yankalilla is closed or not and if in fact it is legal or not to do so. The Bower Road saga continues in this months letters.

A large part of the community is also very upset about the wanton vandalism and property damage caused by mindless idiots to the hockey oval and golf course at Yankalilla Memorial Park. If you have any information the Normanville Police Station phone number is 8558 2014.

Roll on Spring and the warm weather and may the road works on the Yankalilla/ Myponga Road be completed quickly and without delay!

ur Annual General meeting was held on Wednesday 5th July and fifteen members were welcomed by President Glenda Oates.

Reports were given by officers of a very interesting and successful year, as we are now the proud holders of the Cundell Cup which is awarded every two years for excellence in handicraft.

The election of officers followed with Glenda Oates to be President again and Shirley Jones to be Vice President.

Cathy Reid who had been Acting Secretary took the position for the next year. The Treasurer will once again be

Doris Gilbert and Maureen Stone is still the handicraft officer. It was decided to have two committee members, Margaret Schubert and Edna Stevens agreed to be them. The C.W.A. are very grateful to these members.

Ideas for next years programme were discussed and a change was made to our “flower of the month”. It will now consist of a point system with points awarded for bringing a flower, your badge and afternoon tea to make it more interesting.

Our next meeting will be on the 2nd August at 1.30 and new members will be very welcome.

CAPE JERVIS COMMUNITY CLUB NEWS

T

he Winter chill has deterred only a few from attending the Club on Thursday and Saturday evenings. The Barn Dance, postponed for a week due to other major activities during the long weekend, was a great night for those who danced their way into the early hours of the morning.

The film ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ was viewed on one of the Thursday evenings. A good film and atmosphere made for another successful evening.

The pool competition between the Club and Pub, held this time at the Tavern, was narrowly won by the Pub. Fierce competition, great food and a warm atmosphere made for a good evening.

Christmas in July will have occurred by the time this goes to print and promises to be another successful event.

As well as the regular Thursday and Saturday evenings, the facilities of the Club are used for other ‘happenings’. A hard working team caters for buses bringing grateful visitors on day outings. Guests receive warm hospitality, a three course meal and the opportunity to buy handcrafted items.

The craft group meets on Monday afternoon each week and provides an opportunity for supportive socialising as well as creating items for oneself or to sell for the Club. However, making something is not compulsory; simply a cuppa and a chat will do!

The Club also has an extensive and constantly upgraded library catering for a wide range of reading tastes. The librarian is knowledgeable about her readers’ interests and works hard to meet their needs. New books arrive almost weekly. A computer with internet access is also available for the use of members.

Snacks continue to be served for Thursdays’ social evenings and delicious meals on Saturdays, with different specials each week for about $10. These have included, vegetarian lasagne, shepherd’s pie, roast lamb, chicken schnitzel, Thai chicken and calamari with mango sauce. Fish meals are always popular, especially with visitors to the area. As well as the usual bar service, some very good wines are now available. Add to all this a warm, friendly atmosphere and good coffee and who could resist!

Goolwa to host 11th Annual Rural Women’s Gathering

ore than 300 rural women are expected to attend the 11th Annual Rural Women’s Gathering, in Goolwa from August 10 to 12.

Rural Women’s Gatherings, supported in SA by the Department of Primary Industries and Resources SA, are held throughout Australia to help share ideas, information and inspire women in rural areas.

This year’s Gathering with the theme, River of Life, will focus on the significance of water, and the River Murray in particular, to many aspects of rural life.

“Women’s Gatherings are a wonderful way to bring rural women together for networking and gaining new skills,” said this year’s co-ordinating committee chair, Carol Schofield.

“It also provides an opportunity for Goolwa and the district to showcase local talent,

produce and the environment.

“The committee has organised guest speakers including SA Senator Jeannie Ferris, former Chair of the Community Advisory Committee of the Murray Darling Commission, Ms Leith Boully, and Young South Australian of the Year, Heidi Bartram, a Kangaroo Island-based marine biologist.

There will be more than 90 diverse workshops over the weekend, ranging from community-based achievements including tours of the River Murray mouth and Landcare projects, to personal development courses in voice training, share trading and even rowing.

Adelaide spawned some of the greatest bands in Australia and he grew up learning from the best. He then played in the '80s with Jimmy Barnes's brother Swanee, joined The Stevie Wright Band in '86, led his own trios in Sydney's inner city area and played festivals and venues all across Australia.

In 1991 Ashton played and recorded with Jim Keays (Master's Apprentices), played shows with Junior Wells, Rory Gallagher, Steve Morse, Albert Lee and recorded his first two albums in Melbourne.

oming back to Leonards Mill in the near future will be another live bands night. Following the successful first attempt a couple of months ago, plans are underway for this second musical event. The theme for the night is likely to be “Back To Woodstock!” Watch out for more details next issue.

In 1999 Ashton was invited to tour with Status Quo on a 15-date UK arena tour, opening each night.

Rory Gallagher band members Gerry McAvoy and Brendan O'Neill appeared on his 2000 release Fang It! In 2001 they asked him to join Band Of Friends, a memorial band to the late Irish rocker.

He replaced ex Thin Lizzy and Motörhead guitarist, Brian Robertson.

Ashton then recorded Prohibition in 2006, with Chris Glen, Ted McKenna (Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Michael Schenker Group, Ian Gillan rhythm section) and Deep Purple keys man, Don Airey.

He performs relentlessly across Europe and has toured with BB King, Buddy Guy, Ray Charles, Peter Green, Robin Trower, Wishbone Ash, Vanilla Fudge, Johnny Winter, Mick Taylor, The Yardbirds, Dr Feelgood, Pat Travers, Tony Joe White, Steve Lukather, Walter Trout and Snowy White and has had the pleasure of being invited on stage to perform with Hubert Sumlin and Canned Heat.

MINDLESS DAMAGE n Monday 10th July we received a report of damage to the Yankalilla Hockey Field where someone had been doing donuts on the

surface of the hockey field.

What joy does this person get from such a senseless act?

The other issue is the cost to a small sporting club who can ill afford it.

There has also been wheelie damage to council park areas of a similar nature, this cost is carried by the rate payers and does not go down too well with them.

If there are any persons in the community who have information regarding this behaviour would you please pass it on to us here at the Police Station. The community can not tolerate this sort of activity.

On the up side we would like to praise some younger members of the local community who were decent enough to apprehend 2 youths who were allegedly involved in graffiti incidents in Normanville.

They hung on to the people concerned until the arrival of Police.

It’s great to see this sort of thing happening especially from young people.

MEMORIAL PARK VANDALISM

F

or eighty years the Yankalilla Memorial Park has been an important community owned asset in this district. It is home to seven sporting clubs that cater for hundreds of members aged from under eight to over eighty. In addition, the facilities are used by several non-sporting clubs and by picnickers, walkers, joggers, and people exercising their dogs. Unfortunately, in recent years a new set of users has made its presence felt in the Park. These new users are vandals who, at night, use the open areas of the golf course and the ovals as venues for doing "wheelies" or "burnouts", causing damage to the facilities that are paid for and maintained by the members of the clubs. Luckily, most of the damage, although taking some time and money to repair, has, until now, only been an inconvenience to the members of the victim clubs. On the evening of Saturday July 8th this

changed. It was then that the vandals caused over a thousand dollars worth of damage to the second oval. The oval has been rendered unusable and the Yankalilla Hockey Club is facing the prospect of having to transfer its last two home games for the season to other venues, a move that will lose this small club revenue, as well as its home ground advantage in these two ga mes. T he M emorial Park Committee and the clubs that use the Park ask for your help in stamping out this mindless vandalism, not only in the Park but in all community facilities in our area.

Report any damage and, more importantly, report any suspicious behaviour to the police. Be alert, and alarmed, because no community can afford to have its assets repeatedly vandalised.

Yankalilla U13 Hockey Team Wins

S

aturday July 22nd the Yankalilla under 13 hockey team should have had a home game. Unfortunately thanks to some thoughtless hoons who churned up the Yankalilla hockey field with ‘donuts’, they had to play at Victor Harbor. They played against Victor White (second top team in Premiership table) and won with a score of 2-1.

This was their first win of the season which was great to see, considering the upset the club has had to endure.

The team work was magnificent from the back lines with Jack Fretwell, who stepped in as first time goalie to replace Noah Beckmann who was ill. There was strong support by Issac Astill and Bradley Hartgen to allow the mid field players, Jacob Gonzalez, Reece Hargten and Caleb Roach to bring the attack to the forward line. The forward line was made up by Jenna Daniel, Kenny Daniel, Aaron Clarke, Brayden Clarke, Issac Beckmann and Brodie Anderson.

Yankalilla came back from a goal down after half time to even the score and go one up in

the last minutes of the game.

The Yankalilla parents cheer squad have never been so loud!

This was a great game despite a Yankalilla player being attacked by a German Shepherd dog on field during the game. The player was not seriously injured and appropriate action was taken to restrain the animal and the owner was given an appropriate fine of $210.

Best players were, Bradley Hartgen, Jacob Gonzalez and Aaron Clarke, although it must be said that every player deserved a point for a great all round effort. Well done team.

embers of the Yankalilla Hockey Club have been devastated by the amount of damage done to their field at the Yankalilla Memorial Park on the night of Saturday, July 8th, or in the early hours of the Sunday morning. Someone has chosen to drive onto the field and do “wheelies” all over the field. As the accompanying photos show, it was not just an isolated wheelie done in a few seconds, but it was done in a systematic fashion all over the field and around the goals and would have gone on for a moderate period of time.

As a result of the extensive damage done to the playing surface area, the fields have been declared unplayable because of serious concerns for the safety of players from raised balls and the uneven surface. This has resulted in the club having to transfer their remaining two home games of the season to other venues. This will result in the loss of catering revenue, plus additional expenses in marking out an alternative field - if one can be found locally.

Club President, Alan Curtis, has conservatively estimated the costs to the club could be in excess of $5,000 from lost revenue, cost of levelling and reseeding the oval and watering over summer to reestablish the turf. The club has been trying hard in the past few years to establish its home ground and facilities within the Memorial Park and as such it has been financially pushed and this latest act of vandalism could be the straw that breaks its back.

To the person, or people, involved in doing the wheelies, we hope that you had an enjoyable time and feel proud of the fact that you may well have sent the Yankalilla Hockey into oblivion. If any one in the community has information as to who may have been responsible, the local Constabulary would be very pleased to hear from you (Phone 8558 2014).

The Club has been heartened by the support offered by some of the other sporting bodies and the Memorial Park Committee with the offers of manpower to assist with repairing the damage and use of alternative venues.

We also share the anguish that Henry Smit (Park Curator) is feeling after seeing the damage to the field that he maintains.

situation.

Mr Rutter has every reason to love the environment in which he lives and I understand his sentiments. We live in a beautiful district and the section in question is no different. As the road reserve stands now it adds value to his property, gives him privacy and the illusion of extra land ownership. The entry to the No Through Road is set up to look like a private drive way and the only people to have direct benefit are the Rutters.

What upsets me is the way a few people can try and steamroll or otherwise influence the public by tainting facts to suit their personal agenda. Having lived in the vicinity for 16 years I know the recent history of the area and have experienced the increased road usage. I don’t think Mr Rutter can speak for the residents who travel the extra 1.2 km every time they venture out onto the corrugated dirt roads as he doesn’t have to do it. He also doesn’t get swallowed up with dust whenever a car goes past. He wouldn’t see the number of tourist cars that turn at the end of the bitumen or feel the increased pressure of tourist and other traffic on weekends and holidays, I do.

Let’s allow the council to get professional advice and seek the best solution for the future of the residents and the district’s growth. If this results in the lower section of Bower Road becoming a park reserve, a walking track or a residents only road, then so be it. Don’t let personal gain interfere with the bigger picture of what is best for everyone concerned.

O LEGALLY CLOSE A ROAD, EITHER BY ROAD TRAFFIC ACT OR THROUGH THE SURVEYORS GENERAL, DUE PROCESS of notification of effected parties, 28 days for consultation etc, must apply before any action can be taken. On Sunday 18th June, at 2.00 pm, some of the signatories of the Bower Road Petition, reclaimed, drove through, and walked through, the illegally closed road, it was not without incident. The opposing “Keep it Closed”, group, attempted to block the progress of the vehicles, and walkers, by placing chairs etc, in front of the advancing party. Eventually it was necessary to call the Police, whereupon the crowd was informed that,” Yes, this is a road, and no, this road has never been officially closed, and therefore the public at large is entitled to free access to the road." He also stated that both parties would be better served by" DUE PROCESS," thereby calming the noisy crowd. The assembled "We want it open" group then quietly moved through. It should be noted that, on Friday, prior to the demonstration, Mr. Schintler Works Manager by appointment, approached Mr. and Mrs. Coulter, in an attempt to avert the confrontation. In the presence of a wellknown identity as witness, Mr. Schintler said "you have not presented me with a strong enough case to open the road," so as far as he is concerned, he would be closing the road permanently thus indicating that no consultation would be likely in any way to change his view. When presented with the proposal of a SUMMER TRACK ONLY solution, Mr. Schintler once again stated that it was his intention to close the road. He stated that there was a potential dangerous intersection arising at the Bower Rd, Jervois Rd intersection. We point out that "STOP" signs and "Give way" signs are also part of the traffic management tools. We claim that a town planner would have little difficulty in solving this imagined problem. Mr. Schintler was told that it was pointless to continue the interview, and that the demonstration would therefore proceed as planned. We are informed that Mr. Schintler then attended the local Police Station, which of course gave time to develop the considered response as delivered by police on Sunday. [SEE ABOVE]. To our knowledge, never has Mr. Schintler spoken to the owner of the property on the other side of the closed section of the road. They are signatories of the DO NOT CLOSE THE ROAD" petition and they sought information from council PRIOR TO SIGNING. The illegal barbed wire fence was replaced at 8.30 on Monday, by what eventually appears by Wednesday, to be an ARMCO type fence, and chevron.

have been a frequent visitor to Southern Fleurieu since 1995 and in particular to the Yankalilla area. I find the place ideal for healthy living, quiet, interesting, friendly and welcoming. It would be nice to retire here.

Over the past two months, I have been hearing and reading of a controversial matter involving the lower part of Bower Road, which is splitting the community. I have taken several walks along there and was surprised that anyone would want to open this section of road to traffic. It was difficult enough at the top end to walk safely and at the bottom end I found myself rushing towards the bend on Jervois Road when a car was coming up the hill at speed. The driver was oblivious to my presence and in my humbler opinion, it would be most unwise to open up the lower section of Bower Road.

Before long an accident would happen. Who then would be held responsible for such an accident?

The residents have a duty to each other, to support council’s actions and protect the majority against a foolhardy and expensive proposal. I understand that an estimate of $300,000 is envisaged and the overall project could easily cost around $1/2 million. All this would come from the pocket of residents.

Instead, any sum allocated should be spent for the good of the majority. Improving facilities and promoting this area would ensure that more people would come here, if they knew what this part of the country offered.

Let sense prevail and the interest and safety of the majority be protected!

25 Years in business and still going strong

R

ay and Val Beavis moved to Normanville in 1981 after being visitors to the area since 1968. Their boys Danny and Mat attended the local school for most of their school days.

Danny left to attend Urbrae Agricultural College and Mat obtained an apprenticeship with local engineering firm J & S Nutt. Mat and his family still live in Normanville - and both of Mat’s boys enjoy visits to Poppy’s workshop. Ryley (4) can already operate the button machine and 2 year old Evan has mastered the raising and lowering of Pop’s upholstery bench!

Ray trained as an Upholsterer in Melbourne, working at several large manufacturing companies. While living in Adelaide in the early 70’s he also worked for well known South Australian Company T. H. Brown and Sons.

Ray and Val commenced their upholstery business soon after settling in and for many years maintained outside employment as well.

Ray worked for ACI in Normanville and Mt Compass before going to work at Wirrina until 1996 when the Upholstery and Motor Trimming business had grown enough to keep him busy 5 days a week. Until 2002 Val worked at the Normanville Medical Clinic, only retiring when the workload of Total Recovery became too great to manage on a part time basis.

T

he pathetic rag doll clown lay rejected and alone in a dusty corner of the empty sunlit room. The forsaken house echoed to the buzz of bluebottles against the latticed windows and the patter of scuttling claws. Motes of dust floated like snowflakes in the shafts of sunlight. A noisy beetle made minute pock marks in the whitish down that covered the wooden floor. The creature’s curiosity drew it to the abandoned toy.

The clown lay awkwardly on its side, long floppy legs outstretched, china clay boots twisted at right angles. The busy beetle mounted faded grey and off-white printed gauze. The clowns arms encased in voluptuous sleeves, its porcelain fingers outstretched in supplication.

The beetle crept under a lifeless arm denting the fabric in its wake not really interested in the motionless toy only in the possibility of discovering food. The soft shining silk of the clowns bow tie caused the beetle to slip unceremoniously on to the wooden floor.

Upside down it wriggled back onto its six little bow legs and hurriedly tapped its way to safety in a patch of blackness beyond the chalk faced head of the toy.

The clowns ruby lipped smile was faded, its round cherry nose nibbled in in places down to the porcelain. Its once sparkling blue eyes stared into timeless space dull and washed out. Its tufted yellow locks had been thinned over the years to line countless nests for the offspring of the house’s numerous inhabitants. The clown’s infamous black top hat lay by its head, an indoor garden of mildew and silky tendrils. Only the elements of nature communed in season with the forgotten little corpse.

But, once upon a time all was joy and lights, warmth and tenderness, the toy clown had been cherished by a loving child. It had adorned the pillows on her bed, a rainbow beacon on the dullest days. It had picnicked on the river bank on long summer afternoons. It had flopped in the

FOYL (Friends of Yankalilla Library) welve Friends of the Library met for Morning Coffee at Lillas on May 12th to share books on the theme of Thrillers by a Female Writer. Aside from some discussion about what constituted a ‘thriller’, as distinct from a ‘mystery’, an ‘adventure’ or a ‘who-dun-it’, there was plenty of lively talk about a range of books and authors. Writers included Clare Francis, Linda Fairstein, Sue Grafton, Gillian White, Alexander McCall Smith and Val McDermid.

A full list of the books shared is on display at the Library for those who have a penchant for thrillers.

Our next Morning Coffee is to be held on Monday August 28 at the Normanville beach Café when the theme will be A Book your Mother or Father gave you. This should generate some variety – and maybe a few chuckles.

It had lolled in autumn fields high with golden corn and purple thistles. It had been propped against rustic posts awaiting the return of laughing blackberry pickers with blue stained faces. It had been accidentally dropped in a pond, flustering the wild mallard and putting the irises in disarray, to be rescued by a tall quiet man.

It was a long long time ago.

Children grow up.

The sun sidled across the dusty casement, the gem-like beetle found courage to continue its quest. The little toy clown merged into the lengthening shadows...forlorn and forsaken.

t was a great pleasure to have oil painter Roe Gartleman as our tutor for our July art session and to welcome more new members to the group. Her subject was ‘still life’ and her demonstration of drapery, quinces and mandarins soon came to life on her canvas in vibrant splashes of colour. The workshop proved to be instructive, challenging, and most enjoyable.

I would also like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Art Group, to thank the Yankalilla Council for our recent grant. It was much appreciated.

Our August tutor will be water colourist, Mardi Martin.

he gallery’s first AGM was held on June, 20th 2006. with all Committee Members being re-elected: President U. Bradshaw, Treasurer M. Jelfs and Secretary/Publicity E. Harvey. Two additional members were voted onto the committee, V. Pile and P. Chibnal.

We have now been open for eighteen months and are pleased to report that the gallery has proved to be an asset to the community as a central point for local artists and crafts people to display and sell their work and as a growing tourist attraction. By the end of this year the gallery will have been responsible for five successful special exhibitions, been involved in three community functions and continued to maintain the principal art display. A pleasing and satisfying result, I think, for all the members’ patience and hard work.

At the end of August the whole of the gallery will be re-vamped with new paintings and crafts, and in September a special exhibition of work by Roe Gartleman, Pat Chibnal and Pat Hagan will also be on display.

‘Why not just come along for the sheer pleasure of looking and enjoying the beautiful world of creativity’.

The members of the gallery wish to sincerely thank the Yankalilla Council for its support by means of a much appreciated grant.

If so why not come along to a Workshop which is a pre-cursor to the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival next April, 2007.

The workshop will be run by Jane Smeets, a sculptor and part-time Second Valley resident.

with a mosaic artist in residence, Jane Smeets. A Leafy Sea Dragon art feature will be unveiled during the Festival.

YANKALILLA SHOW 2006

ts nearly that time again, the show committee are in full swing organising this years show. There are a few new attractions this year as well as the usual array of displays, competitions and amusements. This year being grand final day of the football we will have a huge 9ft television screen near the bar and winery tent, so come along have a few beers or wines and watch (hopefully) the Crows in the AFL grand final. Our amusement company has promised us a new ride or two

that will impress the local teenagers and also we are having a rock wall for all you climbing enthusiast to try out. As usual we are desperate for volunteers to help set up and organise the grounds etc the week prior to the show and on show day. It is also time to start getting your entries ready for the hall, flowers, handicraft, vegetables, needlework, home brew etc. Show books will be out in the middle of August. We are also in need of 2 convenors, one for the home brew section and one for the

children’s section. The children’s section is one of the largest sections in the hall and the home brew is also a very popular section that also attracts a lot of entries. So if you have some spare time around show week and think that you could be of assistance, we would love to hear from you.

Yankalilla Youth & Community Centre wins $242,000 funding from Federal Government

he Yankalilla district can now celebrate that all funding has been secured to begin construction of the Youth and Community Centre. The project began a number of years ago from concerns raised by local young people about the lack of a venue for positive recreational activities.

This concern was taken up by the Yankalilla & District Lions Club and other community members who with Council formed the Steering committee who have been working hard to develop the project and secure funding.

The Youth and Community Centre will be constructed within the Lions Youth Park adding to youth and family friendly precinct.

The building will be a venue for all the community that will be suitable for social, creative, educational and community based activities. Other Youth & Community Centre’s have activities like; School Holiday Activities, Hang out space for young people, Youth programs like jewellery making, jam sessions, self-defence classes, Adult Community Education Classes, Belly Dancing or Yoga, Parent groups etc.

The building is funded by a number of different partners namely: Yankalilla & District Lions Club, Yankalilla Ecumenical Events Committee, Tarong Energy, Community Benefit SA, District Council of Yankalilla and the community through fundraising.

The fundraising committee set a

target of $20,000. This figure has been reached and just passed. There is overwhelming support for this project throughout the district and this has been recognised by the Federal Government through their Regional Partnerships Programme by awarding this community with this significant funding.

Many thanks to the Member for Mayo, Alexander Downer who has provided continuous support for this project at each stage.

The previous and current Member for Finniss, Mr Dean Brown and Mr Michael Pengilly respectively, have provided support and advice throughout which has enabled the project to progress.

“This much needed youth and community centre promises an

exciting future for young people and other community members in this district” Mayor Peter Whitford said.

“I would like to thank the steering committee chaired by Mr Jim Martin who have guided this exciting project” he said.

Last weekend a youth camp was held with young members of the district to encourage and develop their leadership skills. These young people are excited about the prospect of the Youth Centre and look forward to being part of the development One of the key issues they raised over the camp was the need for available transport to both get around the local community and to access further education and work.

Many thanks to all community members who have been part of ensuring this project goes ahead.

Incentive Grants for Community Organisations

The Social Enterprise Incentive Grants program targets not-forprofit organisations, which generate revenue from resource recovery activities to support worthwhile community projects, such as providing training and employment for people with disabilities.

Southern Fleurieu CFS Group gets boost from ANZ

ANZ’s donation will assist the Southern Fleurieu CFS Group in purchasing a Compressor for Breathing Apparatus.

The donation was made during ANZ’s Blue Week when all ANZ branches across regional and rural Australia held a range of activities to support their local communities.

The Accident

A

woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy, cold Monday morning. Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt. God works in Mysterious ways. After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says, "So you're a man. That's interesting. I'm a

woman. Wow, just look at our cars!

There's nothing left, but we're unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days".

Flattered, the man replies, "Oh yes, I agree with you completely, this must be a sign from God!" The woman continues, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My

District Council of Yankalilla Budget and Rates declaration for 2006/07

C

ouncil adopted its 2006/07 budget on Thursday the 22nd of June 2006; a budget that Council believes will meet the community’s expectations in relation to the level of services provided with the community’s ability to pay for these services.

Council’s 2006/07 budget included the following operational expenditure upon: Road maintenance $1,124,338 Reserves and parks maintenance $ 320,264 Waste Collection and disposal $133,514 Library and Community Services $185,227 Environmental $25,000 Re- Sheeting Unsealed Roads $210,000 And the following Capital /Community and New Initiatives: Waste transfer station $300,000 Kerbside Recycling $50,000 Road construction Bower Road $200,000 Marine Court $90,000 Hierarchy Road (Blackspot) $200,000

Broadbeach Road $110,000 Parawa Road $92,788 Finniss Vale Road $50,000 Upgrading Administration Centre /Community Chambers $3,900,000 Bridge Reconstruction Tapanappa Road. $90,667 During the financial year Council staff will be preparing management plans for Council assets including road infrastructure, Cemeteries, parks and reserves and playgrounds to name a few .

These plans once adopted, will identify where council priorities will be which will assist future Council in allocating funds within their budgets.

In order to fund Council’s operations for the year, council requires a total rate revenue of $5,062,731 being an increase of 6.1% from 2005/06. To raise this level of rate revenue Council has retained the same rate in the $ as the previous year and the increased revenue has been obtained via the growth in valuations and development that has occurred within the district in the past 12 months.

The rates in the dollar for 2006/07 are: Urban $0.4227 Rural $0.3700 Minimum rate $575.00 – an increase of 4.55%

Council has increased the STED’s fees for those properties serviced by Councils’ effluent disposal system to ensure that Council has reserve funds for the ongoing maintenance and upgrading of the effluent disposal infrastructure.

Recognising that valuation increases are not uniform throughout the district, and that they can place an unfair rate burden upon individual ratepayers, council has continued to provide assistance to various sections of the community: The rate for rural properties remains at 87.5% of the urban rate.

Council will remit any increase over 7.5% to Pensioners; self funded retirees and eligible recipients of rate relief paid by the Department of Family and Youth Services. Eligible ratepayers can apply for this remission at the Council Office and Staff will treat all enquiries confidentially.

Any resident rate payer whose rates have increased in excess of 15 % more than last year and satisfies other eligibility criteria can also apply to have the amount greater than 15% remitted.

Council also provides flexible methods of payment, allows quarterly payment options and negotiates alternative arrangements for those experiencing difficulty.

The total rating policy is available at the Council Office and the Yankalilla Community Library.

Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group - Annual Awareness Event

espite the cold winter weather, about 60 people attended the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group’s annual Awareness Event on Friday 21st July in the Victor Harbor Town Hall, The theme this year was “Adult Exercise” and featured several local groups with their teachers.

Almost half of the floor space in the Town Hall was taken up by a table tennis table and visitors were able to play when they arrived and during the interval. Deidre from the Great Southern Table Tennis Association said a few words about the group and encouraged new members to join.

The evening began with Marita Aldridge from the Cancer Council in Adelaide talking to the audience about the importance of physical activity in the prevention of Cancer and although

she had to drive back up to town, Marita actually chose to stay most of the evening so that she could take part in the rest of the programme.

Audience participation was high up with some stretching exercises, before Tanya and her girls from Fortuna Dance demonstrated some tap dancing. Sandy represented the FIT Health and Fitness Centre in Goolwa and had people doing various exercises, before Erica from Southern Veils Belly Dance, after a superb demonstration, taught the audience the basics of belly dancing.

After the interval, Erica demonstrated the tone ball and then explained the programme offered by the Encounter Fitness Centre which has just moved to Waterport Road, Hayborough. Fortuna Dance, with Tanya, performed some Adult Jazz and Hip Hop before encouraging everyone to join in, and Heather completed the evening’s

exercise programme which is operating along the south coast to bring to an end a very successful evening.

The message which came across during the evening was that a little exercise for everyone is a good thing and that , even if some parts of the body are no longer working, then at least exercise the good bits.

HAVE YOU GOT YOUR BUMBERSHOOT? By Rox Rosey

I

f you wondering what on earth a ‘bumbershoot’ is, then don’t worry, it is the common umbrella or, also referred to as a gamp, brolly in different parts of the world.

As we know, umbrella is for keeping rain off, they are usually made by stretching fabric or other material over a wire frame.

Originally though, this was known as a parasol used first as a protection against the scorching heat of the sun, derived from the word ‘papa’ meaning shield and ‘sol’ meaning sun. The word umbrella came from where a lot of our words originated the latin, ‘umbella’ and (‘umbel’ – a flat topped rounded flower) or, ’umbra’ meaning shade.

History shows us that the collapsible and internally supported umbrella is credited to being invented in ancient China, some 1700 years ago. it is thought that the invention was thought of from large leaves tied to the branching extremities of a bough, however others contribute the idea was derived from the tent which is more or less unaltered to this day.

In Egypt, the parasol is depicted as a fan of palm leaves or coloured feathers fixed on a long handle, resembling those carried behind the Pope in processions, there exists engravings of an Ethiopian princess travelling through Upper Egypt in a chariot, a kind of umbrella fastened to a stout pole, this was generally used throughout Egypt, sometimes as a mark of distinction, but more for its usefulness than ornamental qualities. In some ancient paintings on temple walls, a parasol is held over the figure of a god carried in procession.

In Persia, found in carvings the figure of king appears attended by a slave, who carries over his head an umbrella, another carving, not less than twelve centuries old, illustrates a deer hunt , at which a king looks on, seated on a horse and having an umbrella borne over his head by an attendant.

In Greece, a parasol was an indispensable adjunct for a lady of fashion. In the feast of Athene Sciras, a white parasol was borne by the priestesses of the goddess from the Acropolis to the Phalerus. Overall, its use seemed to be confined to women of that era.

For a man to carry one was considered a mark of effeminacy (tell that to the bowler hatted, pin stripe suited gentlemen complete with umbrellas commuting to their jobs in London).

It is recorded that from Greece, the use of the parasol moved on to Rome, where it was commonly used by women although it was the custom even for effeminate men to protect themselves from the heat by means of what was then called the umbraculum, formed of skin and leather and capable of being lowered at will. The Greek Poet Ovid made various allusions to this and, it appears that it was a post of honour among maid servants to bear it over their mistresses.

From history records it is shown that from then on, right through to the present century this device was written about in places which included the Far East, Bengal in India, Europe, France, England, Japan, China and France.

Jonas Hanway has been credited with being the first man to dare public ridicule by carrying an umbrella in London, and is said to have done this for thirty years up to his death in 1786.

As the umbrella gained more popularity, so have numerous improvements been effective. The transition to the present portable form is due to the substitution of silk and gingham for the heavy and troublesome oiled skin.

Other than being a protection against the rain, the umbrella also has been used as hidden weapon. Following an assassination of a dissident writer in England, it was discovered that he was killed by an intelligence agent using a specially tipped umbrella that delivered a small round pellet containing a deadly poison.

Another form of weapon made by one of the modern makers, contained a sword or a single shot-gun, although no longer produced, they are in great demand and highly valued by collectors.

Some readers may recall the programme of the 60’s called The Avengers, when John Steed carried a sword umbrella with a whangee handle, enabling John to give an almighty blow to his opponent, as well as use the sword.

Then there was the Batman series, where the character Penguin used a variety of weapons concealed in his umbrella.

The best and most innovative use I have ever seen is when tour guides overseas, to make sure they don’t lose any of their travelling flock, hold a vividly coloured umbrella high over their heads, easily identifiable by their passengers, ensuring they come home to roost so to speak.

Umbrellas are fatal for me, I either lose them, cannot remember where I put them and end up buying more each year, and then forgetting again where I put them so I would know where they were. Somewhere in our garage, there must be a huge carton with numerous umbrellas lurking.

I had to have a bit of a chuckle a month or so ago, when the Advertiser reported the auction of the late Princess Margaret’s possessions, and included in the sale was her collection of colourful umbrellas. I felt a note of camaraderie there and wondered if she ever kept them in the one place or, like me spread them all around her house.

They are so different nowadays, smaller and more colourful with interesting motifs. Not like years ago when I was working, horrible black things with a hooked handle that seemed to collect people or their shopping bags and, in all were a rotten nuisance. However, now there are umbrellas so small they can be fitted into even the minutest of handbags.

If we are wanting rain, we sometimes say ‘wash the windows’ or ‘wash the car’, and rain will come, but I have invented an extra one, go looking for an umbrella, knowing that there are simply oodles of them around the place, but never finding one and it will most certainly rain.

As rain is forecast, I will now go and search for yet another bumbershoot and be prepared. But where to look this time?

RANN ROLLS OUT $400 REBATE FOR PLUMBING OF RAINWATER TANKS

rebate scheme for rainwater tanks to be plumbed into existing homes begins this weekend - saving millions of litres of water every year and reducing stormwater run-off from suburban streets. From Saturday, rebates of up to $400 will be offered to plumb new or existing rainwater tanks into existing homes. The Rann Government is investing half a million dollars a year over four years in the scheme. Acting Environment Minister John Hill says the pre-election promise will help reduce the burden on the River Murray as well as complement the Government's requirement that all new homes and significant extensions have rainwater tanks installed from Saturday.

"Mandatory plumbed rainwater tanks in new and significantly redeveloped homes could save four billion litres a year by 2025 - or well over the capacity of the Hope Valley reservoir," says Minister Hill. "The rebate, along with our mandatory plumbing requirements for most new homes, will help achieve the Water Proofing Adelaide target. "The quality of our waterways will also improve as stormwater is captured by tanks, rather than left to flush down our streets. Into our rivers and out to sea," Minister for Administrative Services and Government Enterprises Michael Wright says the rebate is expected to cover the bulk of plumbing expenses. "Adelaide has more rainwater tanks than any other Australian capital city," he says. "However, most water efficiency benefits are gained when rainwater is used for internal purposes, such as toilet flushing and clothes washing, as well as garden watering. This ensures the water is used all year round." The rebate - to be capped at $400 per property will be administered by SA Water and apply to; • New or existing tanks plumbed into existing homes from 1 July 2006. This complements the Government's mandatory requirements for most new homes to have rainwater tanks plumbed in.

• Plumbing work only. The rebate does not cover the cost of the tank. The tank must be connected to at least one internal household fixture, such as the toilet, laundry cold water outlet or hot water service.

• Rainwater tanks with a capacity of at least 1000 litres.

Automatic switching between rainwater and mains water will be required.

Proof of installation by a registered plumber will need to be provided to SA Water, along with a rebate application form. Forms will be available from the SA Water Customer Contact Centre on 1300 650 950 or at www.sawater.com.au.

hen I have been talking to other business advisors, the word which keeps cropping up as the major issue for small business is isolation. There are many others which surveys report, such as marketing, taxation and employing, but these are all relatively easy to deal with once the over-riding one of isolation is solved.

Firstly, business operators need to be made aware of the range of organisations out there which are able to help or provide a forum for other activities. Then it is a matter of us engaging small businesses and of you becoming involved. This is a two way street.

From the businessperson’s viewpoint, two factors work against this happening. Firstly everyone is very time poor.

apparent that the business operators who do not make the time to work on being informed, engaged and active in business in a wider sense are the ones continually struggling.

espite the lack of sailing over the winter period, some club activities have continued, the most notable being the annual dinner and presentation night on Saturday 3rd June. This provided members with a good chance to get together and reminisce on the season past and some of the more hairy moments encountered out on the water over the sailing season. e conclude in this issue the examination of the Bible texts that George Frederick Handel selected to put to music. We are looking at the wonderful truths expressed in the selection of scriptures Handel made and as we stated many of them are in themselves challenges to much of Christian teaching today.

HANDEL’S ORATORIO – ‘Part the Third’ In this section the Oratorio passes on to solemn matters of personal concern. These

The words of scripture are quoted, that though a man might die, yet he can hope in the resurrection when, “at the latter days”, the Redeemer shall be manifested in the earth. This solo is followed by quartet and chorus which proclaim the hope of the Apostle Paul: “Since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die: even so, in Christ, shall all be made alive.” The words of Paul that follow, unfortunately omitted by the Oratorio, tell when that shall be: “ Christ the first-fruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming” (1 Corinthians 15:21-23).Here is a personal triumph. As Christ rose from the dead and was given immortal nature, so also can it be given to those who are his. The succeeding duet; chorus and solo, speak of the great personal victory over sin and death. A moral and physical victory which will find for them the immortalisation of body in the presence of their Lord, when he comes to reign on earth as King. The Chorus, “Worthy is the Lamb,” is taken from the 5th Chapter of Revelation and is part of the number of divinely inspired songs recorded in that wonderful chapter. The language is symbolic, depicting the Lord Jesus in the fullness of his glory, when he reigns in Jerusalem as King. The record says, he “hath prevailed” (verse 5) and in consequence thereof, he is shown surrounded by His resurrected and immortalised friends, who in adoration sing His praises, telling what he has done for them: “Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God, by thy blood out of every kindred and tongue and people and

This is the song of the Redeemed, the song of men and women who have not merely listened to the glorious music of “The Messiah” but have taken heed to the message of its words.

Despite the time of trouble that is slowly but surely closing in upon the present civilisation there is a glorious future for this earth which Handel either consciously or unconsciously expressed in his Oratorio.

That future will be revealed in the second coming of Jesus Christ, a doctrine prominently taught throughout the Bible.

Christ comes for the purpose of rewarding those who have diligently sought to serve him in truth (rev 22:12); he comes to establish his Kingdom on earth, and to reign from Jerusalem. It is wisdom to hearken to the words of the Oratorio, understand its message and comprehend it and follow him in the way he laid down.

(Refer Galatians 3:26-28). By so doing we will not speak of “Handel’s Messiah” but “our Messiah” and be able to look forward in confidence to the glorious consummation of the drama set in motion 2000 years ago.

With that in mind we can surely enter into the spirit of the final majestic chorus of the Oratorio – “AMEN” – “So be it”!

Next month we will turn our attention once again to prophecies associated with the current Middle East Crisis and show the developments that lay ahead. The article will be a precursor to the Lecture that is to be held on Oct 6th 3:00pm in the Senior Citizen’s Club Hall.

$7 MILLION COMMITMENT TO ADDRESS BLACK SPOTS

S

outh Australia's regional roads will be the focus of a $7 million commitment to address crash Black Spots in the new financial year. As part of the State Government's ongoing pledge to improve road safety and reduce road trauma, more than two thirds has been allocated to rural areas. Road Safety Minister, Carmel Zollo, says the Rann Government's State Black Spot program is a vital tool in improving overall road safety. “By selecting locations with a history of road crashes we are providing the best possible safety benefit for the community as a whole,” says Minister Zollo. "It also ensures we are spending our money wisely — where lives are at stake you can't afford to waste money and the Black Spot program provides that assurance". Among the regional roads to receive significant safety improvements in 2006/07 are: • Yankalilla - Victor Harbor Road: (Stage 1) estimated cost $750,000 Yankalilla - Victor Harbour Road, Stage 1 of improvements to the full length of the road. Improvements include shoulder

sealing, removing vegetation, installing guard fence, audio tactile line marking and improved delineation. Estimated cost $750,000. (ARTERIAL).

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SEA RESCUE SQUADRON (WIRRINA FLOTILLA)

ell another month has gone and the weather has not improved much and I think that we are all hanging out for the warmer weather.

The cold and blustery weather has kept a lot of the boaties off the water and the Wirrina Sea Rescue has had a rather quiet month with only six minor incidents being recorded. Don't get me wrong that is the way we like it, but I suppose as the weather warms up things will change. As I mentioned in last months Yankalilla News it is time to do our maintenance and repairs for the coming season. The trailer is one of the most neglected items and when you consider that it does all the work in getting you to your favourite ramp and then getting you home again, it does a fair bit of the work. Keep a regular check on your wheel bearings. They work in very adverse conditions with salt water finding it's way into the

bearings and causing rust on the bearing surfaces. The bearing soon over heats, runs out of grease and the whole thing collapses leaving you stranded on the side of the road and possibly causing a lot of damage and a lot of inconvenience trying to get it repaired on a weekend when most bearing places are shut. Bearing Buddies fitted to the hubs do a great job providing you pump plenty of grease into them which helps to expel the water and thus preventing rust.

Don't be like the chap who arrived at the Wirrina ramp with a tandem wheel trailer with only three wheels.

He did not know that he had even lost a wheel. As mentioned in the last issue of the Yankalilla News all boat trailers over 750kg will have to be fitted with brakes in the next couple of months. I have been speaking to one of the Transport SA. Marine Safety Officers and he dropped the

hint that this new ruling will be policed at all boat ramps so make sure that your rig complies with the law. If your trailer is already fitted with brakes check that they are working properly and capable of stopping you in an emergency. With a heavy boat in tow it takes a lot more time to stop and can be very dangerous in adverse conditions if they are not working to the required specification. Check your trailer lights; (stop, blinker and tail) and make sure they are working. If your lights are like mine, every time you check them there is always one or two not working and it is generally traced back to dirty contacts in the plug or the lights themselves. I have tried several different types of so called water proof lights but they all seem to leak after a while causing trouble. Anot her it em worth inspecting is the winch cable or strap.

look at them and it can save a lot of frustration at the ramp if it happens to break. If your rig is starting to get a bit long on the tooth, it might be a good idea to have a look at the tyres.

Over time they will become perished and could cause trouble. If you have a spare tyre check it as well. There is nothing worse if you get a flat and the spare is U.S. On these cold and wet winter days have a walk around your rig and see what needs to be done so that you have a trouble free boating season. A couple of hours now might possibly save you a lot of hassles later on when you could be out chasing "big reds" or the occasional King George. Coughing Cats

cough is an expiratory effort producing a sudden, noisy expulsion of air from the lungs, usually in an effort to free the lungs of some foreign material (real or imagined).

This can sometimes be confused with retching or gagging, althou gh occasionally an animal may retch or actually vomit following a forceful bout of coughing. The presence of a retch at the end of a cough can be misinterpreted as evidence of a problem with the digestive system. In cats, coughing is generally regarded as a sign of a problem affecting the lower respiratory tract, especially some form of bronchitis. Cats can cough for a variety of reasons, including the presence of foreign material within the airway (e.g. pieces of inhaled grass), or irritation from inhaled liquids or gases.

Coughing can also result from inflammation of the airway, which may have a rapid onset (e.g. cat ‘flu) or persistent (e.g. chronic bronchitis). The inflammation may be caused by a number of factors, including viral, bacterial, or parasitic worm infections, associated with an allergic reaction.

Tumours (cancer) located within the chest can occasionally cause coughing.

In cats coughing is rarely associated with heart disease, although some cats with a heart problem are presented for coughing as the main sign of disease.

Coughing can also be seen with upper respiratory tract disease, e.g. where irritation, or other disease affects the larynx (voice box) or trachea (windpipe), or where disease in the nose results in excessive secretions draining into the larynx and trachea, causing irritation and coughing. It is important to remember that it is normal for all cats to cough occasionally, e.g. when they inhale or aspirate foreign objects, or if their airway becomes i r r i t a t ed b y c h a n g e s i n t h e environment. If the cat only coughs occasionally, and is well in itself, and the cough is not productive, no treatment is required. However, if the cough persists for more than a few days, is severe and productive (i.e. the cat spits something out, or swallows at the end of a coughing fit), the cat appears unwell in itself, or is losing weight, veterinary attention should be sought. Most acute cases of coughing will cure with minimum need for interference, except for perhaps a course of antibiotics. However, if the cough is very severe, or if it has been present for some time, then further investigation may be needed. This usually entails taking a full and detailed history, which may help to highlight the underlying cause (e.g. a cat allergic to human skin dust may cough mainly when lying on it's owner's bed). The vet will need to know whether the cough has changed over time, and whether the cat has any other medical problems that may be significant. The cat may then be given a general anaesthetic, so that its chest can be x-rayed. While the cat is anaesthetised the vet may look down its airway. Samples of fluid and cells can be collated from the airway, either via an endoscope, or by flushing a small

amount of sterile salt solution into the lungs and then sucking it back out again. These samples can be used to look for the existence of infection, inflammation or tumours. How a particular cat is treated depends on the cause of its cough, In the case of a mild bacterial infection, a course of antibiotics is likely to be sufficient. The removal of a piece of foreign material, or the correct drug treatment for lungworm infection, will also result in a cure. Once coughing becomes a long term problem (i.e. has been present for over 2 months the likelihood of bringing about a total cure is not so good. Inflammation is often due to repeated exposure to allergens (particles to which the cat is allergic), irritants (e.g. cigarette smoke) or bacterial infection. This chronic exposure results in changes in the lining of the cat's airway, such that even if the initial trigger can be identified and removed, the damage is already permanent and the lungs can never fully recover. In these cases treatment aims to control the coughing and prevent further damage. It may include removing any known irritants or allergens, giving drugs (bronchodilators) to help keep the airways open, treating bacterial infections with antibiotics, reducing inflammation with corticosteroids, and sometimes giving decongestants. In the case of certain types of cancer, chemotherapy or surgery may be an option.

t this meeting Lynn Trigg, a newer member, introduced herself and then gave a brief background of Pam Williams who she had brought to the club several times as a visitor. Pam was then pinned by President Joyce Aspinall and given a warm welcome by the club members.

Instead of a speaker, members sat in groups and some had brought an item, which could be used as a conversation piece. As this was designed as a 'get to know the members' meeting, half of us moved after 20 minutes, and then the other half moved after another 20 minutes. There were many interesting items shown and a high level of conversation ensued. We followed with a simple lunch of quiche and salad and tea or coffee and everyone agreed the meeting was most enjoyable. Earlier in June 19 members and friends from the Men's Probus Club and the Ladies' Club enjo yed an interesting tour over the South Australian Whale Centre at Victor Harbor. Afterwards we met at Urimbirra Wildlife Park and enjoyed a delightful luncheon with some more members and friends.

t is great to see that many members of our community are involved in tree planting activities in the coming months.

A reminder that the resource centre has a number of tree planters available for short term loan. These can be reserved in advance so, if you have a tree planting day planned and would like to make a booking, call in to the centre and speak to one of our friendly volunteers. A $10 deposit is payable for each planter borrowed and this is fully refundable on return of the equipment within the agreed time frame. For those of you

who might be undertaking some property planning activities, we have recently purchased two soil samplers which are also available for loan.

A number of the centre’s volunteers have recently taken part in a training course on the ArcView GIS Mapping software. We are hoping to have the software up and running on our own computer in the near future and to introduce a mapping service to assist land management groups and individual land managers involved in property planning and in reporting on project

Some of you have expressed concern that a number of the large gum trees in our district appear to be dying and losing their leaves. This is due to an infestation of lurps (leaf eating insects) attacking the trees.

Lurps do not generally kill the trees and they usually recover in about a year.

significant cause o f immune deficiency in the world is Under nourishment.

In the past decade much work has been done in examining nutrient deficiencies, even single nutrient deficiencies. Nutrient deficiencies can be as high as 88%, including western countries. I shall cover some of the more important nutrients.

Protein deficiency can lead to cell mediated immunity deficiencies. Protein absorption can be affected by other nutrient deficiencies. The thing to remember with protein absorption is that we obtain the essential amino acids that are required.

Sugar, albeit in the form of glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey and orange juice in excess has been shown to reduce immune function.

Obesity is strongly associated with conditions such as Hypertension, Atherosclerosis, Diabetes and Joint disorders. It has a direct link to decreased immune function.

Excess lipids, fats in the body, such as cholesterol, fatty acids, triglycerides and bile acids inhibit immune function in the body also.

Vitamins and Minerals that support the immune system are as follows: Vitamin and Beta Carotene.

Vitamin C is a strong immune enhancer. If you take vitamin C as a supplement, I suggest purchasing a good quality one, with flavonoids, rutin, quercetin or hesperidin.

Many are multi-ascorbic such as Magnesium, calcium, sodium ascorbates.

Zinc is possibly the most important of the immune enhancers. There is a belief that we do not get the zinc we need from our food, as it is often lacking in the soils from which our foods are obtained.

It is

estimated that at least 80% of males and a slightly less amount of females are zinc deficient. A simple, quick and cheap test is called a zinc taste test. This is considered accurate and takes about 30 seconds. Most Naturopaths can test your zinc status.

Vitamin B6 is also an immune enhancer and can be reduced in the body by excess protein intake, low dietary intake, alcohol and oral contraception use.

Iron is also important for some immune disorders.

As well as these, there are botanical herbs that have been beneficial for some immune disorders.

Echinacea is a significant immune enhancer, however, it is not recommended for asthma, sinusitis, hayfever, and some associated disorders.

Golden seal is an immune enhancer that I recommend quite often. It is a strong immuno-stimulant.

Liquorice is another good herb and can taste pleasant also. I am talking about the proper herb, and not the liquorice from the shop ( which may not have any real liquorice in it at all).

I know I have said it before, and I shall repeat myself again; Eat fresh fruit and vegies, drink plenty of water, have lean proteins, limit simple carbohydrates, limit all processed foods and enjoy life. You may choose to take a multi-vitamin for a time.

The Winning Word

o you play scrabble? It’s a great game – interesting, educational but frustrating at times.

I’m not a scrabble whiz but, I must tell you about a game that made my day. There were four players, and I was well behind until the final move. The last letter had been taken from the pool and it was my turn.

I noticed a letter N - just two squares away from a red triple word score. I could make the word ‘kind’ but it would still leave me running last.

In a sense of defeat I placed the K and then, I and the D, and there was the word, ‘kind.’ I noticed that I had an E and an R that could made the word, ‘kinder,’ which would add a few more points to the score. (but not near enough) As I was about to add the E and R to the word I reviewed my two remaining letters. One was I and the other a blank. A few seconds of thought and a word came to mind – would it fit? It did! I made the word, ‘KINDLIER.’ ‘Kindlier’ spanned two triple word scores and also gave a bonus fifty points for using all seven letters. The others then had to deduct the value of their remaining letters to add to my score.

Like a trailing horse in a race, my final move shot me to the front and over the finish line with a decisive lead.

A great word.

Not only was the game decisively won, but I believe that the words that came to mind for the winning move are among the best in the English language – ‘kind,’ ‘kinder,’ ‘kindlier.’

I remember seeing a half starved dog who watched as people rushed by in one of Sydney’s busiest streets. His tail was thin on hair and his mangled ears indicated a lonely fight for survival. I went over and patted his head and said, ‘Hello boy? - you look like you could do with a good feed.’ I walked on but, after some time, noticed the dog following hard on my heels.

Eventually I boarded a bus, and never will I forget looking out the window and seeing the dog looking up at me, and then watching as we drove away.

That’s what a moment of kindness meant to a dog! Who can imagine what real kindness could mean to starving and homeless kids, the lonely and forsaken and particularly the angry and aggressive.

Sometimes I think of that lonely dog. I see him still – on the kerb, oblivious to the roar of traffic, his longing eyes glimpsing the endless trail of feet as people hurry past in desperate haste. How many thousands have passed him by or spared a thought for his plight?

But, isn’t that how it is? Where’s that moment of kindlier thought? Where’s the urge of

compassion for those in need? We stride past in selfish pursuits.

If we could be ‘kindlier’ – kindlier in our words and actions what a difference it could make!

How happier could be our homes, our work places and all the people we meet! Kindness could bring great changes to this ugly and selfish world.

True kindness Someone once walked this earth and showed us how to live kindlier. He was particularly partial to those who failed, and those discarded by society and piety. His kindness touched their hearts and lifted their spirits.

The thing about kindness is what it can do and what can mean to those who are on the receiving end. It eliminates negative emotions like anger, jealousy and pride and makes us more kindly disposed towards others. Like the dog on a Sydney street, people warm to even the tiniest gestures of kindness. Kindness could change the world.

The kindness of Jesus, however, went far beyond his personal contact with the lepers and out casts. In his life and death and resurrection we see the very kindness of God. The Bible uses the word ‘grace,’ which means ‘undeserved kindness.’ The apostle Paul said: ‘But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect.’ 1 Cor 15:10 Undeserved kindness incorporates the supreme virtues of mercy, compassion, forgiveness and goodness. Kindness in action was exemplified

by Jesus who suffered and died for our sins. We need to pick up on Paul’s words: ‘and his grace to me was not without effect.’

One person who was deeply affected by the kindness and mercy of God was a converted slave trader who had stooped to the lowest levels of human abuse. He repented and became a new kind of person – one of England’s best loved pastors. He wrote these lines, ‘Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me!’

(John Newton) Let the kindness of God in Jesus take effect in your life. Gratefully acknowledge that he died in your place on the cross, and humbly receive his forgiveness and salvation and then live for Him, by faith, and be person of true and permanent kindness.

Maturity blues – overcoming the ‘blues’ in later life’

F

eeling ‘blue’ occurs to most of us at some stage in our lives for a variety of reasons. In later life , people can experience a number of experiences which can lead to feeling blue for a prolonged period. Some people find the transition from full time productive careers to retirement difficult. Others have been forced to retire because of chronic health problems or disability. For some, mounting medical bills threaten their future financial stability. The loss of a loved one, or serious illness in a lifelong friend, or in your spouse, can add tremendous caretaking responsibilities, and also creates much sadness. Lack of mobility, either due to physical illness, or loss of driving privileges, can result in social isolation and loneliness. All these factors can lead to getting the blues in later life.

Life is full of these emotional ups and downs, and usually we shrug off the ‘blues’ after a short time and get back on with life. For some people, feeling blue can take a hold on their lives and start to affect their physical wellbeing, which can result in chronic fatigue, sleep problems, and changes in appetite. It affects your mood, with feelings of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness. It affects the way you think, interfering with concentration and decision making. And, it affects your behaviour, with increased irritability and loss of temper, social withdrawal, and a reduction in your desire to engage in pleasurable activities. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People sometimes cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Without help, the low mood can last for weeks, months, or years.

When the "down" times are long lasting or interfere with an individual's ability to function, that person may need information and help to overcome their situation and feel positive again.

One of the biggest obstacles to getting help can be a person's reluctance to get information and help. Many people think that their prolonged low blue mood will simply go away by itself, or that

they're too old to get help, or that getting help is a sign of weakness or moral failing. Such views are simply wrong. Overcoming the blues in later life is achievable for most people, no matter how helpless they feel or that their situation is hopeless.

Maturity blues education and support, sponsored under the Community Benefit SA scheme will be holding a series of information mornings and afternoons in the region in August and September. The aims of the sessions are to provide people with information on the blues in later life and where to get help. The information is aimed at family members or anyone with an interest in the topic.

The Cancer Council - South Australia The Cancer Council doubles subsidised accommodation available to country cancer patients.

T

he Cancer Council South Australia today announced the purchase of the Comfort Inn Flinders Lodge at Kent Town to provide subsidised accommodation for people from regional and remote area of the State receiving cancer-related care in Adelaide.

The 70-room motel would double the capacity of The Cancer Council’s accommodation service, which currently comprises of Greenhill Lodge, Eastwood and Seaview Lodge, Fullarton.

The Cancer Council’s board chairman, Professor Carol Gaston, said that the purchase of Flinders Lodge was the culmination of a three-year strategy to secure additional affordable, near-city accommodation for people receiving cancer care in metropolitan Adelaide and accompanying family member or carers.

“People with cancer experience a range of practical, psychological and emotional challenges. In particular, people from rural and remote areas are more likely to experience greater problems and concerns associated with travel for treatment and follow up care than their peers living in urban or regional cities,” she said.

“Central to our mission is providing effective practical, emotional, and informational assistance to ease this extra burden and to enhance each person’s ability to cope with cancer related distress and dislocation.”

Rural patients’ need for accommodation in Adelaide depends on the cancer treatment required and its availability locally. While some surgery and chemotherapy is provided via regional hospitals, radiotherapy services are currently only available in Adelaide.

Around 20 per cent of guests who use The Cancer Council’s accommodation service are from interstate, mainly Broken Hill, Mildura and the Northern Territory.

Pt Pirie residents Neil and Alma Uren hailed the expanded accommodation service as a muchneeded support for country people who had no option but to leave their home and community supports for city-based treatment.

“Greenhill Lodge was a haven for us during a nine-month stay in Adelaide during Alma’s treatment for multiple myeloma. It took the worry not only out of finding somewhere

affordable to stay, but provided access to transport between the motel and treatment centres saving us the stress of finding our way around unfamiliar streets. We could also prepare our own meals in the communal kitchen - all of which added up to much-needed cost savings,” Mr Uren said.

The South Australian Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS) reimburses eligible people for travel and accommodation costs. For eligible guests, The Cancer Council’s accommodation is charged at the rate of the subsidy.

The number of cases of cancer in South Australia will increase as the State’s population grows and ages. By 2011, the number of new cases of cancer diagnosed is expected to reach more than 9000.

According to The Cancer Council chief executive, Associate Professor Brenda Wilson, Flinders Lodge will help The Cancer Council to meet current and future demand for affordable near-city accommodation for cancer patients and their carers.

“We have been acutely aware of the need to expand our accommodation service as Greenhill and Seaview Lodges have operated at capacity for the past two years, catering for a daily average of 105 people,” Associate Professor Wilson said.

“As a community-based organisation, we were committed to finding the right property at the right price. We know that our guests require accommodation that is well located, offers a self-catering kitchen, dining and recreation facilities and outdoor areas.”

Flinders Lodge guests will have access to The Cancer Council’s full range of specialised services including transport between the motel and major radiotherapy treatment centres, a cancer support services coordinator and a recreation and friendly visitors program.

Associate Professor Wilson also acknowledged the support and involvement of the South Australian community in helping to fund the purchase.

COMMONSENSE PREVAILS REGARDING SCHOOL BUS

he State Government has now reversed its previous decision and will allow a Yankalilla Area School bus to continue to travel into the township of Myponga to pick up students and turn around.

Local Member of Parliament, Mr Michael Pengilly, said he was pleased the State Government had again listened to the safety concerns of parents and the school community.

He said: “If this decision hadn’t

been reversed parents driving children to meet this school bus were going to be required turn against traffic both morning and afternoon on the dangerous Main South Road /Myponga Beach turn off, where the speed limit is 100kph.

“The location is very close to where two motor bike riders were killed last year.

“The decision to allow the bus to travel into Myponga until the end of 2006 is sensible however

needs to made permanent not temporary.

“It is important that safety issues come ahead of bureaucratic rules governing school buses.

Mr Pengilly praised the stand taken by the parents, the school community and the Yankalilla Council in pushing for the change in the bus route. He thanked the Minister for Education for responding to the safety concerns he had raised with her.

erm 2 was a busy and varied time at the centre.

Diversity focus on Aboriginal culture, whereby dreamtime stories were shared – a favourite being ‘Warnayarra the dreamtime snake’. This led to an unusual visitor ‘Anna’ a very big children’s python. The children were highly excited about the visit and of the handling. (The same could not be said for the staff!) Thank you to Al Dobson for his time and effort. The imaginary tree horse equipped with bridle and saddle

provided enjoyable hours of riding across ‘Yankalilla Fields’!! Congratulations to Ros who has accepted the position of Child Care Coordinator. With renovations near completion the new baby/toddler area is proving to be both functional and beneficial for staff and children. As always, there is much discussion about childhood nutrition for optimum development. Some staff at the centre attended a ‘start right, eat right’ nutrition training program that confirmed the importance

yponga held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 12th July with 12 members present. After various reports Trenna Eatts was returned as President with Kathy Hayes Vice President, June Rowley Secretary, Josie Rogers Treasurer & Val Moore Handicraft Secretary. Gail Fowler and Dolly Clarke were made competition and Birthday Secretaries. Trenna won the competition category for the year. Moreen Hutchinson the most attendance and Val and June tied for first in the bloom competition. We have been notified of receiving a Council Grant for $220 to purchase 2 new trestles which we will donate to the Hall and be able to use. Trenna will be presented with the cheque in due course on 20th July.

Arrangements were discussed for our birthday to be held on 13th September at

Urimbirra. June, Josie & Trenna will get together & send out invitations. We have received an invitation for 2 members to attend Pt Elliot's birthday in August and an invitation for members to join with Victor Harbor for their birthday in October. Two members will work at Show Cafeteria on September 7th. Our new programme was discussed and adopted with some very interesting guest speakers proposed for the year. Members were reminded of the Cundell AGM- on 28th July at the Port Elliot RSL- Hall followed by a pooled lunch and then in the afternoon the Branch Officers Meeting. Myponga C.W.A. meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Myponga Hall Supper rooms; any interested persons are most welcome.
