ell another month has come and gone, and we are still seeing plenty of boating activity. We have attended to 10 incidents during the last month and with all the heat wave conditions it is no wonder that people are heading out on the water to get some relief.

We have had a couple of rather humorous incidents which are worth sharing with you.

One eager fisherman was quickly reversing his rig down the ramp as if he had not one second to lose, when the ramp attendant noticed that he did not have his safety chain attached between the trailer and boat. The attendant courteously mentioned this to the driver. The reply came back; “I have launched enough boats in my time to know what I am doing” You guessed it, the attendant no sooner turned and walked away when crash bang, and the boat was on the concrete. The driver was not a very happy chap, having to endure the cheers of the

onlookers and spending the next half hour trying to get the boat back on the trailer, let alone the damage to the boat. The moral of the story is , don’t take the safety chain off until you are at the waters edge ready to launch.

Another incident readily comes to mind was a radio call for help was picked up by one of our members, Bruce Stark. The story goes something like this. The craft had run out of fuel and when asked for his position he had no idea where he was, the only information our radio operator could get was that he was between Lonsdale and Sellicks. This was rather vague, but this chap had no idea where he was. You can imagine a fourteen foot boat a mile or so out to sea between Lonsdale and Sellicks Beach, a huge area to search. To cut a long story short, the Police boat was in the vicinity and made contact with the stricken vessel. The police asked him for a description of his vessel, colour length etc etc and an

leven members attended our March 5th meeting on a very hot Wednesday. We had several apologies from member plus we had a couple on the sick list in hospital.

We send our thoughts and best wishes to Betty Cain who is in Flinders. Out meeting was a very interesting one with our guest speaker Shirley Frawley our State Property Officer and Archivist, giving us a view of the Clipsal from behind the chain mesh fence erected on Dequetteville Terrace, Kent Town. She also spoke on the effect the water restrictions were having on the gardens at State Office.

Shirley also spoke about the State Archives and what was required from all branches regarding record books and memorabilia.

She lightly spoke about the legal requirements regarding financial records.

When Shirley left our meeting she was heading to Beachport to inspect the CWA holiday cottages situated there. CWA have several holiday cottages in South Australia

which are available for the general public as well as our members.

We had two members with birthdays in March, Doris Gilbert and Blanche Harvey.

Both members were presented with floral posies. We wish to thank Maureen Stone for her never ending supply of plants and flowers for our trading tables and meetings.

Our next meeting with be on April 2nd, we will also have our Handicraft meeting on April 23rd where we will look at and discuss the craft to be learnt this year.

Anyone interested in Handicraft is welcome to attend. We meet at 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

We wish to convey our condolences and deepest sympathy to Barry Oats and family on the passing of Glenda on Sunday 16th March. Glenda will be sorely missed by everyone in the community

The police boat eventually found him off Moana beach.

On the night of April 5th, the Police water Response will be running a multi agency exercise at Wirrina between Victor Harbor, Kangaroo Island and ourselves. This will be a night time exercise, so don’t be surprised if you see numerous lights out to sea on the 5th of April. This will be a good test for our friends on KI. who have just inherited the ex police boat the “ Pedro Warman”.

Bush Dance in Aid of Youth & Community Centre

T

here are a few tickets left for the BUSH DANCE that the Inman Valley Progress Association with sponsorship from the Yankalilla Lions Club, are holding at the Inman Valley Memorial Hall on Saturday 12 April at 7:30pm.

Bush music will be provided by local popular band HARD YACKA and the cost is $15 per head, which includes a generous supper.

All proceeds will be donated to aid the "fit out" of the near to be completed Youth & Community Centre.

Blue Week 2008 at ANZ Yankalilla

A

NZ recently donated $335.00 to St John Yankalilla.

The donation was made during ANZ’s “Blue Week” when all ANZ branches across Australia hold events to raise funds

for and awareness of worthy causes in local communities.

Greg Galvin, Branch Manager, ANZ Yankalilla said “ANZ is committed to supporting our local communities and

helping important causes such as St John Yankalilla. Donations such as this puts this commitment into action.”

John Jaensch, Divisional Superintendent of St John Yankalilla said the donation will be used towards operational needs as they are now the first responder unit based in Yankalilla.

ANZ Yankalilla would also like to thank Yankalilla Bakery, Year 3 Class of Yankalilla Area School (Mrs Putland’s class) and everyone in the community who supported Blue Week.

Congratulations to competition winners Ray James of Carrickalinga and Beryl Fitzgerald of Normanville, who won the jar of jelly beans and hamper.

ear Paul, I am prompted to write after the article on the “I na ug ur al Fle ur ieu Campdraft” in the March edition of the Yankalilla Regional News. First, the obvious cooperation between the Committee, Sponsors, Cattle Donors and land owner John Croser shows what can be achieved by dedicated personnel. This spirit of cooperation has also been evident in other activities I have witnessed since recently retiring here. Secondly, the Committee should be applauded for returning the site to its original condition (within twenty four hours), along with generous donations to local organisations.

It has not gone unnoticed.

special thanks, to the young man from the council who bandaged my arm, to the ambulance crew Sandy and Jan, and all others involved thankyou and last but not least thankyou god for not taking me yet.

The stench of disregard

T

he lagoon near the mouth of Carrickalinga Creek literally stinks! In all the years that I and my family, and my partner’s family, and many other families, have lived in or visited the area, the creek has never been in worse condition.

Since the late 1950s we have all played in the creek, swum in the creek or fished in the creek.

Over the past few years its condition has deteriorated but this year takes the cake! Three months ago the creek began to smell but now it is a stinking, algae-infested, fish-free and almost bird-free zone!

And it is not only because of the drought. The creek is spring-fed in many places along its course, but in times of low rainfall it no longer has any hope of health near the mouth because virtually all of the water, whether from rainfall or spring, is captured by countless dams through its tributaries as well as along the main channel.

Add to this the unfettered grazing of stock along the watercourse, the de-vegetation of the watercourse, and its considerable contamination by

nutrients and sediments, the consequence in a dryer than normal year is perfectly predictable.

The water quality of the estuary impacts significantly on the populations of fish and frogs, birds and insects able to survive. Whereas once the area was a healthy and biodiverse wetland, now it is a fetid disgrace. Whereas once the children caught plenty of fish from its banks throughout summer, now they cannot even stand within 100 metres without gagging. Whereas once we watched the birds feeding and fishing, now when the odd bird lands it disappears again just as quickly. I hope there is somewhere else for them to go!

Given that this estuary area has recently joined the national listing of critically endangered ecological systems known as Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps, the silence is particularly deafening.

This is a world of rapidly

changing times and last minute, crisis-driven attempts to balance human needs with those of our landscapes, both wet and dry.

Unless we change and improve our attitudes and practices quickly, we simply prove that we are hopeless land managers who do not care about or understand the world on which we depend for every single thing we have.

And the small but once beautiful Carrickalinga Creek will fall by the wayside as one more sacrifice to our incompetence and greed.

Frank Midgley turns 70

O

n the 28th of February 2008 Frank Midgley turned 70.

A gathering of about 35 Speedway and Family friends helped him to celebrate at the Morphett Arms Hotel where his son Andrew and family from Broken Hill and daughter Dianne and family from Coffin Bay surprised him by turning up unexpectedly.

Among the guests were famous speedway driver Bill Wigzell and wife Bub also 94 year old Alex Rowe who was a Speedcar Builder, long-time friend and confidant Ron Smith and his wife Beryl, along with some of wife Helen’s friends and some from EMT Ambulance SA of which she is administrator.

Ron was called on to make a speech about Frank, this was followed by Frank’s reply and by the cutting of the cake which was served as dessert.

All enjoyed the occasion and reminiscing on Speedway events of the past.

Frank was given a chequered bucket hat and vowed to keep on photographing until the chequered flag.

A

t our February meeting our guest speaker was Normanville glass artist CD Mlynowski. A glass artist for more than twenty years, CD makes her pieces in moulds, giving them three to four firings in a kiln, at 1500 to 1800 degrees centigrade. While at work she wears protective clothing, a helmet, and gloves.

With the assistance of her helpers CD had set up a colourful display of her own work, some of the techniques going back more than 4,000 years. With her beautifully crafted platters, bowls and

jewellery circulating through the hands of her nervous audience CD filled us in on the history of her craft.

In ancient times the Egyptians made glass tableware, glass panes and gold inlay, while Islamic craftsmen were using a wheel cutting technique for decorative cut glass. By the first century AD the Romans were fusing glass and mosaics. In 1292 AD Venetians began producing millefiori glass on the island of Murano, their fear of furnace fires making the island a sensible site.

Traditionally, all glass was made from sand, silica, lime, soda and potash. Then lead was introduced, the process resulting in lead crystal, which, as well as being less fragile has the ability to absorb and give off light. In more recent times Pilkington, in the UK, introduced float glass, its reds and oranges having a gold content, making it more expensive than others.

The most expensive glass is known as dichroic, which reflects one colour while being of another. Yet another type of glass is the Tiffany glass used in lamps and in landscapes such as those in stained glass windows. After the Sydney hail storm - a few years ago now - church windows were hard to replace.

Today, most glass is cheaply made, on a

factory conveyor belt, and will break down over time. For more precious glass, repairs can be difficult e.g. Venetian glass cannot be reheated. But, as CD pointed out, there are some good glass glues available.

While glass can be used for making simple items such as serviette rings and bracelets, in the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas it has been used for the creation of a magnificent glass garden!

n Sunday 9th March at Marina St Vincent Henry the seal was sunning himself on one of the boat ramps at the Marina. Henry is the well known seal around Adelaide suburban beaches.

This meant that only the one ramp was available for use. The 'boaties' were considerate of Henry & most were happy to use the one lane in the morning.

When returning that afternoon it was a different scenario.

Henry was still blocking a boat lane.

People were kicking at him this was adults & even

launching boats down the lane where Henry was to the point of driving over his fin. This was absolutely appalling behaviour to witness. The Marina Manager was informed & he refused to address the issue.

Holdfast shores council cordon off an area for Henry when he is present. This is all that was required to do. Most people at the Marina marvelled at the opportunity to see Henry up close. The inconvenience of waiting to launch or return was only minor.

I would hope for any future instances that the Marina could

have a plan of action to protect Henry as the Holdfast Shores Council does.

Private Health Cover I got a little annoyed with my health cover provider MBF the other day when as well as increasing the annual fee, they announced that after April 1 2008 refunds for prescription glasses will only receive a full refund if purchased from a select batch of optometrists, obviously those with whom they have contracts.

Even if this behaviour can be justified in the City of Adelaide and its immediate surrounds where distance is not so important, even then why should members be restricted in their selection of optical providers?

In the Rural scene not only does it force members to travel expensive, inconvenient distances it threatens the survival of the local optician if he is not a member of the exclusive club f named providers. I have elsewhere in this newsletter illustrated the substantial cost of travelling even a trivial 30km each way which may eliminate any advantage in dealing with the preferred provider.

This provision may mean that country towns like Yankalilla / Normanville could lose a service in the district even if he is a frontrunner in his industry (see “Seeing is believing” in this newsletter) John Jelfs

Sorry! what I did today?’ I walked to Kent Reserve and sat on a rock near to where the Aborigines used to live and I said, ‘Sorry’ … I know what it’s like to have a child taken away.’

Knowing what its like

T

he day we said ‘Sorry’ to the Aboriginal people stirred a lot of emotion.

I was deeply touched when, late in the afternoon of that day, our phone rang. A distressed mother was on the line. She was doing it tough and talked of disconnecting with life.

About a year ago Welfare took away her four year old daughter.

A few days before ‘Sorry’ Day she was able to briefly see her.

As they parted her heart bled when her little girl said, ‘Mummy I want to be with you?’

She then said, ‘Do you know

It’s when we feel what others have felt that we know what its like. Separation from a child is deeply hurtful for a mother.

Few live their days without pain.

Sharing pain reduces pain.

It’s great to know that there are others who understand – those who’ve felt what we’ve felt.

But, good, too, if, like the mother separated from her child, we can move to where others have been and feel for them.

‘Sorry’

I find ‘sorry’ a hard word to say.

But, it surely must be one of the most healing and relationship restoring words in the English language. It conveys regret and remorse for our hurtful actions.

We’re good at hurting each other – and some times on a large scale. Ours is a world of pain and suffering caused by a ggr e s sio n, ne gl e ct a nd indifference. The first step towards healing is an acknowledgement of wrong and an expression of sorrow and regret.

Perhaps those whom we’ve wronged are no longer living.

We could think about visiting their grave site and saying, ‘Sorry.’

There is something deep within us that responds to expressions of sorrow and regret. It meant a lot to Aboriginal people to hear our Prime Minister say ‘Sorry.’

The mother wanted to say sorry to those who were wronged.

‘sorry’ to God? Every wrong thing that we do against others is also a wrong against God. The Psalmist said, ‘Against you and you only have I sinned.’

Recognition of wrong is the first step, ‘sorry’ is the next. The Bible uses a word that is not as familiar as it once was – ‘repent.’ It means to turn away from our wrong and indifference and be truly sorry.

There’s a God of love and forgiveness that we can turn to.

The Bible says that a lowly and contrite heart God will not despise.

We can’t change what we’ve done but we can be sorry and make things better for others and ourselves.

ife’s not getting any easier for Carers. A special report issued late last year states that Carers’ wellbeing is the lowest on record and that over a third of family Carers in Australia have been found to be severely depressed and/or anxious. Being a Carer is also associated with having an increased number of chronic conditions, for example diabetes, bronchitis and arthritis.

Anyone who cares for a parent, partner, child or friend with a disability, a chronic mental or physical illness, or who’s frailaged, is a Carer. Carers are not contractors, or paid workers. Carers have an emotional connection to the person they care for.

South Coast Carer Support’s major fundraiser, Cycle 4 Carers takes place this year on Saturday 19 April. Last year’s event raised over $4000. All funds raised go towards providing the annual retreats for Carers living on the Southern Fleurieu, allowing them a few days break to revitalise and rest, away from their caring role. This is often the only holiday they get for the year.

Cycle 4 Carers is an opportunity to help Carers on the Southern Fleurieu, as well as getting fit and

having fun.

Whilst the big challenge is to cycle from Mount Barker to Victor Harbor, you can join in along the way – at Meadows, Goolwa, Middleton, Port Elliot – however far you can manage.

You don’t even have to be able to ride a bike to take part! You can stroll, skate, jog, walk your dog, or ride your ‘gopher’. And you can enter on your own, or get a team together to help raise the $50 sponsorship required. It’s not hard – one team raised over $1000 last year – much to their great surprise!

The event has other spin-offs: friendships develop as teams train together, and their health and fitness improves. Taking part doesn’t just benefit Carers, it benefits the whole community.

Starting at Mount Barker at 7.30a.m, Cycle 4 Carers finishes at the Carer Support Centre, 63 Victoria Street, Victor Harbor with lots of excitement, flags, banners and free refreshments provided by the Friends of Carer Support. ox Creek Wines Fleurieu Peninsula Working Sheep Dog Trial was held at The Yankalilla Show Grounds on the 2nd and 3rd March 2008.

Eighty Six entries were received from Victoria and Country South Australia. The event was held over two days with trialling starting at 8.30 and finishing at 5.30pm.

The Fox Creek Wines Open Class was won by Bill Trembath from Bute with his dog Burndale Ben and runner up was Brian Growden Naracoorte with his dog Allmore Gracie.

ANZ Bank Yankalilla Improvers Class was won by John Gallpen Portland Victoria with his dog Hudson’s Ken and runner up Mike Deppeler Coondah Victoria with his dog Deppeler’s Kate.

Southern Transport Novice Class was won by Brian Growden Naracoorte with his dog Wangoola Tska and runner up Jeff Dinning Mt Compass with his dog Dickers Dardanelle.

The Yankalilla and District Lions Club would like to thank the members of The South Australian Working Dog Association for their assistance in running the trial and special thanks to Bill Trembath and Merv Simmonds for their judging. ccording to our brief diary entry, one would have thought that we just chanced to pass through Edinburgh and did not take notice of this wonderful city’s highlights and attractions. Not so! We had only three hours at our disposal to browse and look around so we had to be selective as to our choice of attractions.

To think we were walking in the car park, otherwise utilised in September for the annual Edinburgh Tattoo presented for thousands of visitors from around the world, but normally used as the parade ground for drilling and training the regiments of troops stationed and posted to this location.

To overseas visitors who had only watched the Tattoo in their home countries, it put a totally different aspect on this extravaganza and would be viewed in future with a better insight as to the organisation, huge preparation and rehearsals of all participants to bring an hour’s entertainment to our living rooms.

We could have made some spending money whilst there by taking snaps of overseas tourists using their cameras so they could have memories and reminders of their visit to the Castle.

The displays of the various artefacts pertaining to the Castle and Edinburgh itself are eagerly sought by photograph or from the website.

No visit is considered complete without a tour of Edinburgh’s ‘Castle of Castles’, long regarded as the ultimate location for spectacular views of Edinburgh from the highest points.

Upon visiting, the tourist is instantly aware of the attraction from the early inhabitants for their settlement there. Their safe refuge was sought due to the volcanic rock that forms the base of Edinburgh Castle and has always afforded the ultimate safe and defensive position in Edinburgh.

I was intrigued by the mascot cemetery, positioned on a lower level over the parapet. There were the final resting places, lovingly tended and cared for by the custodians of the troop contingent stationed there, each animal with its own name plate and rank at time of demise.

It was time to board our bus, next destination England via Dalkeith. However, we needed to indulge ourselves by enjoying afternoon tea at Jedburgh, followed by being photographed and farewelled by a lone piper at the border between Scotland and England.

As we crossed the border near Northumberland, with RAF training jets and helicopters flying overhead, we felt it

ITS TIME FOR WATER ACTION FOR THE FUTURE ON THE FLEURIEU

M

ember for Finniss, Michael Pengilly has called for a major overview of water requirements on the Fleurieu Peninsula for the long term future, followed by on ground action to put substantial water supply mechanisms in place.

In a speech to Parliament, Mr Pengilly said time is of the essence and the old excuse of no money is no longer valid.

Water is a user pays operation and money spent now will be repaid over the next generation in triplicate if we put in the correct infrastructure Michael Pengilly said. $300 million a year is disappearing into Treasury coffers with no increase in South Australian supplies, the River Murray will not service our region and neither should it.

A combination of desalination, increased storage, better use of stormwater run off and new technology could provide for the fast growing region for many years if we take the initiative now Michael Pengilly said.

Whilst we currently have Fleurieu users on restrictions and are in a dry spell, we must be positive and provide assurance for our future generations by way of early action on water.

Mr Pengilly is calling on the Rann Government and SA Water to sit down and talk with him and regional users in a combined effort to provide for all facets of community use in towns and wider industry and primary production use.

House of Assembly Wednesday, 13 February 2008, Page 2014 WATER, FLEURIEU PENINSULA Mr PENGILLY (Finniss) (15:45): robably the most pressing issue in Australia today, and more particularly in South Australia, is the issue of water for the future. I wish to talk about water for the future on the Fleurieu Peninsula (that rapidly developing area) and ascertain how the government in its infinite wisdom plans to accommodate the enormous growth in that area; how it plans to accommodate the provision of business and enterprise; and what are its plans for the future in that area. Much of the Fleurieu Peninsula is in the high rainfall area of the state.

Generally speaking, it has an assured rainfall; and, except for the odd year, in the state's worst years the Fleurieu still gets a reasonable rainfall.

It is an area where more people are choosing to live. The area includes Victor Harbor, Goolwa, Middleton, Port Elliot and, on the other side of the Fleurieu, Yankalilla and Normanville, where the population is increasing rapidly.

Indeed, around the Wirrina area they are now

talking about trying to accommodate a population of 5,000 to 6,000 people. However, none of it will happen without water. The Myponga dam is currently catering for sections of the Fleurieu Peninsula, but it will not cater for a population which it has been suggested will be around 50,000 in a decade or two. It just will not happen.

The communities of Cape Jervis, Rapid Bay and Second Valley and along that western Fleurieu coast do have the capacity to absorb many more people but currently they cannot do it. The Yankalilla council is at its wit's end trying to work out how to make provision for water down there. The new owners of Wirrina, which has had a very chequered history to say the least, are keen to make sure that Wirrina is a success story, and the biggest issue for them at the moment is the provision of water. The whole future of the Fleurieu Peninsula and its prospects for increased population, farming enterprises, business activities and whatever else all revolve around the adequate provision of water which we do not have at the moment.

I would like the parliament to take my comments on board. More to the point, I would like the government of the day to commission a strategic plan to tell us how it intends to accommodate the future of the Fleurieu Peninsula, how it does hope to achieve more growth down there and how it can assist local government and those regional communities for the future of the area. The situation is critical.

Climate change would appear to be with us.

There are no two ways about that in some quarters, although some of us who have been around the traps for a long time are pretty used to runs of dry years and runs of wet years. I for one look forward in the very near future to an end to the dry years. I would like to be walking around in water for several months every year, and the sooner that happens the better. It is absolutely imperative for the future of the whole Fleurieu and those growing areas that some heavy, substantial planning is done for the provision of water.

We see all this money disappearing into Treasury from taxes to SA Water— $300 million—none of which is going into the provision of infrastructure for water for the rest of South Australia, quite apart from the desalination plant. We cannot keep on saying that we cannot afford it. We have to accommodate for the future. We need to get on with it. It is simply not good enough to put it all on the backburner and do nothing. Look at the enormous projects that were undertaken in the Playford era such as pipelines, dams, electricity and everything else that was put in place. I implore the government to put in place a longterm plan and a strategy position for water to assist the residents and businesses of the Fleurieu Peninsula in its capacity to grow. I look forward to an announcement from the government along that line. I seriously encourage it to do so: it is too important. As I said, you cannot continue to put everything on the backburner.

nce again sincere thank you to Sue and Paul Elliot for hosting our recent Mosaic Workshop at the Corinium Roman Village. The Villa is always an inspiration to all artists, whatever their form of art may be, and numerous visits have proved this.

Unfortunately I missed out this time on the experience but I understand the workshop was well attended, interesting and enjoyable. Come November, when we have our own exhibition I look forward to seeing some of the art groups colourful efforts.

Maybe at a later date I may have a go myself…….with lots of help from my friends.

Our next meeting will be at the Agricultural Hall and our guest tutor will be Heather Lautebuc, Pastelist. This can be a messy media to use (if you are anything like me) so please bring a cloth or sheets of paper to cover the table and a small damp cloth to wipe hands etc.

Juniors have started training in March. There is much enthusiasm within the Club. There have been Five Senior Teams and Nine Junior Teams nominated to play in the GSNA. Rob McBride is the A Grade Coach and he comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience having coached in the city. Other Coaches are being organised and if anyone would like to be a Sponsor of the club, please contact Kath or Sonia.

Last October two of our young girls - Elisha Gallagher and Kimberley Smith were selected for the Southern Netball Academy.

They join an elite group of players from our own GSNA, Southern Hills & Kangaroo Island and will receive extra coaching and attend a Netball Camp and then play in the Regional Competition in Adelaide in July, where they play teams from other regions across the state. A great experience!

The Club is looking forward to the first match on April 12th and to a successful year in 2008.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB

W

eather wise, it has been difficult to sail and we continued to lose some days in February and March, mostly because wind conditions were too light. While it is beautiful out on the water on hot days and as the boat drifts along the bottom can be clearly seen with the occasional fish swimming by, it is rather frustrating when the boats don’t want to go anywhere. The random puffs of wi nd can make r acing interesting, as the more experienced sailors can read the signs and make some headway, while those with lesser experience enjoy the pleasure of being becalmed and left way behind the pack!

Our Club membership continues to grow, with 25 members, so most Sundays we can field about 12 boats on the water. We welcome Stephen and Kylie Treloar onboard, they have started sailing in a borrowed boat and we hope that they will take the plunge, buy their own boat and become full members. Also to Geoff Morgan, who has started to sail with us. Sailing as a sport is losing membership overall, so with the local Club continuing to buck the trend it is an exciting time. On that note, it is worth repeating that new members are always welcome, so if you are at all interested in sailing, you would be most welcome to join us for a trial spin, even if you have little or no experience. Ring either Steve Rogers on 8598 5244 or Stuart Gibbs on 8558 3399 and arrange to join us. Alternatively, wander down to the beach any Sunday after 1pm and have a chat as we rig our boats. A seaworthy boat can be readily purchased for less than $2000 and can give years of pleasure and if you want to upgrade, can be sold for close to the purchase price. Meanwhile, beginners can receive tuition from the ever enthusiastic Steve Rogers and arrange to borrow a boat.

On the racing front, Dave Carragher and Brian Matthews are likely to take places in the Club championships in their Sundowners, with Brian making big strides in his seamanship.

Simon Bone has purchased a new sail for his Mosquito and is easily winning his division.

Dave Herraman is hard to beat in the dinghy division in his Sabre, showing great technique, although Stuart Gibbs is trying to give him a run for his money.

Sailing will continue every Sunday to the end of April, weather permitting, and places in the Club Championships are still yet to be determined.

Rosalie’s Trip to Bali to teach Preschool Children

osalie is travelling to Bali on July 15th 2008, and working in the Penestanan (Ubud) PreSchool. “Through the Bali Children’s Project” - “Escaping Poverty through Education” .

The Pre-School in Penestanan is opening its doors for the first time on July 15th and needs lots of resources such as health and hygiene products and art and craft material.

The Bali Children’s project is dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged young people in Bali through education. It is founded on the belief that as children are empowered to realize their potential, they will enrich their villages and contribute to the world we all share.

training. It has been operating for 10 years. BCP is wholly dependent on donations of individuals and organisations.

During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember. Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair.

YANKALILLA JUNIOR BASKETBALL

n the weekend of 23rd - 24th February, Yankalilla played a Junior Carnival at Victor Harbor. We put in an under 12 team and an under 14 team. For the U12 team it was their first experience at competition at this level. They didn’t win any games but the experience was great for them. The U14 boys have played at this level for a couple of years and came 3rd overall in their division.

On the March long weekend the U14 boys travelled to Adelaide to play Country Carnival. We played teams from the South East and Hills areas. We won 3 games and lost 2 and played off for a spot in the Grand Final. The final result was a loss by 4 points.

What a great effort boys, in the extremely hot weather conditions. Many thanks to Nick Noack for his time and effort in

coaching the boys over the last two months.

The final result is a reflection of the input you gave the boys. Well done to Luke, Brad, Sam N, Timona, Rhys, Harrison, Aaron, Dylan, Travis, Sam C, Ryan, Tony, Jesse and Daniel. he item relating to an undeveloped road reserve at Inman Valley outlined in the previous issue “Trailwalker” is a classic example of the shortcomings and resultant confusion of current legislation relating to undeveloped road reserves. Interpretation of the section of the Roads (Opening and Closing) Act, 1991 by succeeding generations of local government officers leaves much to be desired when dealing with applications from adjoining landowners to purchase undeveloped road reserves for absorption into their respective properties. In this particular instance at least two objections were made to Council

regarding the intention to close and sell the public land in question, based on an on-site inspection in the case of the objection by Walking SA, and based on prescribed criteria in the case of the objection by the Office for Recreation and Sport.

Representation was made by Walking SA at the meeting when Council made a decision to retain the road reserve in public ownership, but at a subsequent Council meeting, some councillors who were absent from the first meeting voted to rescind the previous decision and to sell the road reserve to the applicant wishing to purchase it, thereby excluding public use of a potentially significant walking

trail. All Walking Access Committee members have since made a further on-site inspection and held discussion with the landowner and agree that an amicable resolution to this particular problem could be achieved by Council discussion with all parties. Once again another anecdotal occurrence demonstrates the failure of existing legislation to be correctly interpreted by local government clearly proving that the suggested minor amendments to the legislation by Walking SA, as professionally recommended by a retired Parliamentary Counsel with more than 35 years experience in Government, would provide a satisfactory solution to this longstanding and on-going problem.

All existing and potential walking locations and trails including the Heysen Trail as well as native vegetation and wildlife corridors are destined to become bare, barren tracts within private ownership fence-lines.

Straining and spraining for better sports injury treatments

W

e’re pretty spoilt for sport in Australia. Whether you participate or spectate, there’s almost an endless number of choices.

During the winter, football dominates the media. The primary local codes AFL and rugby league take more column inches of the back pages of the papers than probably all the other sports put together.

Not surprisingly, where there’s serious risk of contact in sport, there’s serious risk of injury; so the teams which finish at or near the top in September are likely to be the teams which treat their injuries most effectively – or better still, prevent them occurring in the first place.

It’s the so-called soft tissue injuries which occur most often; and while it’s the high profile players who hit the headlines when they’re suddenly out of action, in fact it’s the amateur sportsmen and women among us who suffer the most. We just don’t prepare well enough – injury prevention is not a sufficiently high enough priority.

Sports injuries don’t have to happen. Most injuries suffered by amateur athletes are preventable. Some injuries, such as tennis elbow, are caused by faulty movement, but most sports injuries occur because the

muscles are not conditioned.

To help us better understand the prevention strategies and to choose the most appropriate treatment, if an injury does occur, pharmacists around Australia have fact cards available on sports medicine topics such as Exercises for Flexibility and Sprains and Strains. They are part of the Pharmacy Self Care health information program developed by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.

A strain occurs when muscle fibres are torn or stretched and twisted beyond the normal limits. Sometimes just a small number of fibres are damaged; pain occurs but no loss of strength. But sometimes a complete tear of the muscle occurs, requiring more intensive therapy. Muscles often affected are the hamstring (back of the thigh), quadriceps (front of the thigh), the calf muscle and the groin.

Joints are held together and stabilised by ligaments. A torn ligament is called a sprain. Common sites for sprains are the ankle, wrist and thumb. The most severe of torn ligament injuries may require surgical re-attachment.

First-aid for a strain or sprain involves using the RICE protocol. That is, Rest from activity for 28-48 hours; application of an Ice pack (wrapped in wet towelling to prevent direct contact with the skin); the application of a Compression bandage or elastic stocking; and wherever possible, Elevation of the injured area. More details about the RICE protocol are given on the Sprains and Strains Fact Card.

namely: heat, which increases bleeding, alcohol, which increases swelling; massage, which can increase both bleeding and swelling; and exercise, which may worsen the injury.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as diclofenac, ibuprofen and naproxen products – all now available without prescription – can help reduce the pain and swelling. But these medicines are not suitable for everyone. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using them.

Similarly, anti-inflammatory creams and gels may be helpful. However, heat rubs and liniments should be avoided during the first 48 hours or while the injured area is still painful, swollen or warm.

Remember, you don’t have to be in the Tour de France to fall off your bike.

Similarly, if you’re a weekend golfer or netball player, you’re still at risk. However, prevention strategies will reduce the risk appreciably. Warm up before and cool down after exercise. ast month we pointed out that the dream of the King of Babylon recorded in the Bible book of Daniel (around BC 580), represented the destiny of the world under 4 successive world empires.

The dream was of an immense image warrior, described in Daniel Chapter 2:32 as having “a head of fine gold, his breast and arms of silver, his belly and thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay” . Daniel the prophet revealed the meaning of the dream.

The Head of Gold represented the King of Babylon and by extension the then existing Kingdom of Babylon.(BC 608 – 542). The breast and arms of silver; the Medes and Persians who had joined forces to conquer Babylon (BC 542 – 334). The brass belly and thighs was the third world empire of Greece which rapidly swept to power under Alexander the Great.

The fourth World Empire (BC 67 – AD 1453) was the Iron power of Rome. Rome moved eastwards and took Syria, including the Holy Land then Europe, Britain, Spain etc; country after country fell to the feared Roman armies. Again in accordance with the two legs, Rome divided into Eastern and Western Rome with Constantinople becoming the capital of the Eastern part of the Empire with Rome in the West.

No World Empire superseded Rome. Instead through tribal factions and successive raids from northern Europe the empire disintegrated into 10 divisions (the toes) which formed the foundations of modern Europe.

e have been fortunate to increase our patrolling members by 5 new Bronze Medallion holders. Congratulations and welcome to Paul Jorgensen, Cheryl Carter, Murray Russell, Sarah Russell and Allison Cole.

All trained hard and applied themselves. Well done On 19th January the club held its second beach party for the season and its annual long swim. Swimmers had the option of competing in a 4.2 km or 2km swim.

Results for the swim were as follows: 4km swim: 1st Richard Meadows, 2nd Paul Jorgensen and equal 3rd Simon Simms and Geoff Moffat.

2km swim: 1st Ken Toseland and 2nd Todd Scheer 11 year old Tayla Hanak a member of our junior squad, deserves a special mention for her stamina, focus and absolute determination in completing the 2km swim.

On the beach the hotter months and school holidays have made for a busy time for the club. Overall it has been rewarding but challenging to our small group of dedicated patrol members. These people are the heart of the club for without them we would not be able to do what we are there for and that is to patrol the beach for the safety of the general public. We need more of them.

Opportunities to participate in life saving are as follows: Age 10 plus - Resuscitation Certificate Age 12 plus - Basic Emergency Care Age 13 plus - Surf Rescue Certificate Age 15 plus - Bronze Medallion There are swimming standards applicable to the surf rescue and bronze medallion so if that is not you perhaps First Aid or Radio would interest you.

Becoming an active surf lifesaver has its own reward as it provides satisfaction in the service of others, identification with a world famous organisation and an opportunity to mix with people from all walks of life.

Southern Fleurieu Bereavement Support

T

he Southern Fleurieu Bereavement Support Program which is a program of the Southern Fleurieu Health Service, aims to assist and support people who are grieving the loss of someone close to them.

This service provides, information, grief literature and educational resource library, a referral service to short term loss and grief counselling, community education, a support group meeting and social morning teas. For current local supports please phone Gaynor at the Support Office on an alternate Thursday or Friday, 8552 6522.

The recently advertised SCDH Grief Workshop due to commence early March in Victor Harbor has been postponed.

Registrations are still being taken and it is anticipated that these 2 hour small group sessions to run over 6 weeks will be offered next month.

dozen Boot Camp NormyStyle crew put their best feet forward at the Victor Harbor fun run on Sunday March 9.

Leanne, Dave, Veronique, Melissa, Tonya, Jane, Sue, Moss, Cheryl, Georgina, Julie and Anna ran and walked the 5km course in the blistering mid-day sun.

Encounter Bay locals grabbed their garden hoses to spray walkers and runners, and volunteers on drinks stations kept everyone hydrated.

Leanne Jones was crowned the and Ken and Karen Boot Camp Champ after being Nelsons butchers. knocked to the ground at the start line, crashing onto her knees.

She leapt up and said she hadn’t trained so hard to spend the event sitting in a first aid tent – and went on to record a great time.

Melissa Bailey won her age group and others were stoked with their first fun run efforts.

ankalilla Hockey Club held a ‘Come N’ Try Day’ on the 2nd March at the Hockey Grounds at Memorial Park. Even though weather conditions were hot there was a good turn out with four new players who were a welcome sight. The club is trying hard to recruit new players at both Junior and Senior level so that we can have a Women’s, Men’s and an Under 13 and Under 16 Junior team for the 2008 season which starts April 12th. here are quite a few accolades to pass on to some of our female and male bowlers for great achievements in the last few weeks.

First of all Val Bartlett beat all comers to be successful in the champion of champions region 7 final held at Encounter Bay on the 9th March in 40 degree heat.

Excellent result Val, WELL DONE! Also we had Park Fogarty as runner up to John Wallace of Goolwa in the G.S.B.A. singles championship 25 22 shots. This event was held on 24th February also in trying conditions.

Locally John Barrett won the club handicap singles defeating Barry Cotton. Congratulations to John on a fine effort and to Baz for a great battle and professional place getter (like some racehorses).

Also nightowls has come to an end of a very successful season. The final night was held on the 12th March and congratulations go to the victorious team skippered by Fergus McErlean with Ross Bond and Anne Minke.

The fun and games enjoyed by these players during the season was of great satisfaction to themselves and a very pleasing atmosphere to the club.

Lets hope some of these nightowlers are available on Wednesdays and/or

Saturdays throughout the winter season, they are definitely welcome.

The last night (12th March) was held with a sausage sizzle, handled

by Julie and Bruce Spilsbury.

Something like 200 pies and pasties, courtesy of Malcom Putland (a great sponsor of the club) being the main attractions. Other helpers and fundraisers included Ed Bennett, Lew Wh ittlesea and th e indispensable bar manager Robert Wuttke.

The other important faction from nightowlers operations was the generosity shown by Malcolm Putland or Yankalilla Bakery and Bruce Spilsbury of Normanville Mitre 10 in doubling the fundraising efforts $1 for $1. Thanks very much chaps, with proceeds going to the new future Youth Park Centre.

Lew informs me there were many other who helped in the kitchen and tidying up etc. throughout the season, thanks to these people.

Just a reminder that the Annual General Meeting will be held at 7pm on Thursday 17th April, a good turn up is essential.
