by Amy Pletz

Restoration Times is published bimonthly by Yahweh’s Restoration Ministry. We have restored the true names of the Heavenly Father, Yahweh, and His Son, Yahshua the Messiah. These names were hidden by biblical scribes and translators and can be easily proved in any good encyclopedia or dictionary (under “God,” “Jehovah,” “Lord,” “Jesus” or “Yahweh”). They are found in ancient manuscripts from which we derive our modern translations. Our desire is to return as closely as possible to the pure teachings of scripture. That includes rooting out many popular doctrines and traditional teachings that are not Biblical, but which developed through the centuries from human custom or by compromise with error. We encourage each reader to prove scripturally for himself what he reads here, 1Thessalonians 5:21. Restoration Times expounds the close ties between the Old and New testaments. We teach the continuity and harmony that extend from Yahweh’s actions anciently down through His present activity in Yahshua the Messiah. This was also the conviction of the early New Testament Assembly. This publication is sent free of charge, made possible through the tithes and offerings of those who desire to see the truth of Scripture restored in our day.

The Believer’s

Unnatural Nature by Alan Mansager

can you afford to offer your literature and DVDs free of charge?” the “How caller asked. “I’ve seen groups charge as much as $60 for one DVD!” Man’s methods are not Yahweh’s. And that’s sad. Our approach to the ministry of Truth is rare in the religious world. Yahweh expects of His people the complete opposite of the world’s selfish spirit. By putting others first, He insists that we overcome the natural impulses that war against His Spirit. He wants His Believers to be passionate about the welfare of others, Deuteronomy 15:7-8. It is one reason He sent Yahshua to this earth and is clearly seen in the way Yahshua conducted His ministry. He daily sacrificed of Himself to serve others in every way conceivable. That is a major key in becoming Messiah-like, Luke 6:38. When you undergo conversion your attitude and perspective change; your heart experiences a spiritual transformation. The carnal desire to “take” and “keep” for oneself transforms into an eagerness for giving and sharing. Nothing brings more inner joy. Yahshua showed by His life that the ultimate of worship leading to salvation is to love Yahweh and your neighbor as yourself. Despite all that Yahshua taught in this regard, just a small percentage of those who benefit from this ministry make it possible for us to carry out Yahweh’s work. They contribute far beyond what they receive so that others may drink from the well of truth. The natural and un-converted person will take advantage of the generosity of the few. In any endeavor the takers far outnumber the givers because taking is basic to human nature. The givers resist that impulse. They are the truly converted who have the love of Yahshua. The Savior always cared more for others than for Himself, ultimately giving His very life. Giving and sacrifice were central to our Savior’s ministry. We are commanded to follow Him, Luke 18:22. The transformed heart does not do what comes spontaneously. It’s the clash between the renewed, regenerate individual versus what the natural man does instinctively that makes up the spiritual drama we see every day—even among Bible believers.

Yahshua or YeshuaWhat is the Correct Pronunciation of the Messiah’s Name?

A

by Robert Wirl

mong the ranks of Messianic believers there has long been a controversy as to the correct pronunciation of the name of our Savior. Predominately, among Jewish Messianics, there is the belief that the Messiah’s name is to be pronounced “Yeshua,” while among other Messianic believers there is the belief that the Savior should be called “Yahshua.” Obviously they can’t both be right. Our Savior said in John 17:17, “Sanctify them in the Truth, your Word is Truth.” It therefore stands to reason that the truth of this matter can be learned by examining the Word of Yahweh. The Meaning of the Savior’s Name By examining the Scriptures we learn that the Israelite leader Joshua had the same name as our Savior. Hebrews 4:8 reads in the KJV, “For if J-sus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.” The context of this passage shows that this is not referring to our Savior, but rather to the Israelite general who took Israel into the Promised Land. This evidence supports the fact that the Messiah and Joshua had the same name. All Hebrew names have meaning, and the name of our Savior is no exception. If we look in Matthew 1:21 we learn the meaning of the Messiah’s name. Again, we quote from the KJV: “And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name J-SUS: for 4

he shall save his people from their sins.” The name of the Messiah means “savior” and its meaning is derived from the Hebrew word for salvation. From Hebrew lexicons we learn the precise meaning of the Savior’s name. The Brown, Driver and Briggs Hebrew Lexicon gives the following definition for the name Joshua: “…Jehovah [Yahweh] is salvation as a proper noun, masculine: 1) a son of Nun of the tribe of Ephraim and successor to Moses as the leader of the children of Israel; led the conquest of Canaan; 2) a resident of Beth-shemesh on whose land the Ark of the Covenant came to a stop after the Philistines returned it; 3) a son of Jehozadak and high priest after the restoration; 4) the governor of Jerusalem under king Josiah who gave his name to a

“The Masoretes took certain liberties with the sacred Name because of their belief that it was too holy to pronounce.” gate of the city of Jerusalem.” This reference says that the Savior’s name means Jehovah, or (more correctly) Yahweh is salvation. For a second witness on the meaning of this name we go to the Hebrew Lexicon of Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance. The definition there states: “No. 3091, uwcwhy…-from No. 3068 and No. 3467; Jehovah-saved; Jehoshua (i.e. Joshua), the Jewish leader: -Jehoshua, Jehoshuah, Joshua. Compare No. 1954, No. 3442.” This definition verifies our previous definition, and it reveals the root words of this name. The first root given in Strong’s Hebrew Lexicon is No. 3068.

RESTORATION TIMES MAGAZINE January/February 2011

This is the Name of the Heavenly Father. “No. 3068, hwhy Yehovah (yehho-vaw’); from No. 1961; (the) selfExistent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of G-d: KJV - Jehovah, the L-rd. Compare No. 3050, No. 3069.” The second root of the Savior’s name is Strong’s No. 3467. This is the Hebrew word for salvation, “No. 3467, ucy yasha` (yaw-shah’); a primitive root; properly, to be open, wide or free, i.e. (by implication) to be safe; causatively, to free or succor: KJV -at all, avenging, defend, deliver (-er), help, preserve, rescue, be safe, bring (having) salvation, save (-iour), get victory.” From the Scriptures and from these lexicon definitions we learn that the Savior’s name should be translated as, Yahweh is salvation or the salvation of Yahweh. Yahweh or Adonai? The name of the Heavenly Father is composed of four Hebrew letters. For that reason it is referred to as the Tetragrammaton. Understand that when James Strong produced his concordance, the popular view among scholars was that the name of the Heavenly Father was Jehovah. Strong and most scholars of that time were for the most part still following the error of the original English translators who had mistakenly incorporated the vowel points occurring in the Hebrew text into the transliteration. These vowel points had been added by the Masoretes to maintain their belief that the Sacred Name should not be spoken. The vowel points that were placed there were for the title Adonai (my L-rd). Traditionally, the Jews read Adonai or Ha Shem (“the Name”) instead of pronouncing the Name of the Heavenly Father. They believe that “Yahweh” should not be pronounced because it is too holy, being called “the ineffable Name.” When the reader of the Hebrew Masoretic Text would see the Tetragrammaton, he would be reminded by the vowel points to read Adonai and

not Yahweh. This belief is in direct conflict with what our Savior taught on the subject; He openly proclaimed the Name of the Heavenly Father to His disciples. Consider the following quotations from the Savior’s prayer in John chapter 17: “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word,” v. 6, NASU. John 17:11-12: “I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are. While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled,” NASU. John 17:26: “And I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them,” NASU. Four times in this prayer our Savior emphasized that He had declared the Name of the Father to His disciples.

Obviously, the Messiah did not follow the Jewish tradition concerning the sacred Name. Scholarship has proven that the name of the Heavenly Father is not Jehovah but Yahweh. The Correct Pronunciation When looking at the various pronunciations offered in the lexicons, bear in mind that they are based upon the vowel points that were added by the Masoretes several hundred years after the Messiah’s death to help preserve the Hebrew pronunciations. The Hebrew texts were originally written without vowel points. In Marks and Rogers Handbook to Biblical Hebrew is the following quotation: “Originally Hebrew had no written vowels; the following consonants, however, were often used to indicate long vowels: a, h, w, y. When the Masoretes introduced their vowel signs, they added their signs to these consonants,” p. 7. Notice that all of the letters that compose Yahweh’s name are listed here. The Masoretes took certain liberties with the sacred Name because of their belief that it was too holy to pronounce. For those fluent in Hebrew the vowel points are not necessary for reading or

understanding the text. It must be noted that the same “liberties” that were taken with Yahweh’s Name were also applied to the Savior’s Name in Hebrew. Because of these corrupted traditions it is necessary to disregard the vowel points when translating these names. Let’s take a look at these names as they appear in the Hebrew text. We will first consider the name Yahweh. In the Hebrew it is written hwhy. Hebrew is written from right to left. The English transliteration is YHWH. These are four vowel letters. It is not necessary to have vowel points to pronounce this name. The first letter— y (yoth) is pronounced as a long Y sound, like the Y in heavy (an ee sound). The second letter— h (hay) is pronounced as a short A sound, like the A in father (an ah sound). The third letter— w (waw) is pronounced as a long U sound, like the OO in food (oo sound). The fourth letter— h (hay) is pronounced as a short E sound, like the E in met (an eh sound). When we put these sounds together we get the correct pronunciation of the Heavenly Father’s Name, ee-ah-oo-eh, or as written in English, Yahweh.

The

True Messiah Many profess to have a personal relationship with the Messiah but are not only ignorant about who He was but about His very purpose for coming to earth. Request our free booklet and get to know the “True Messiah.” Ordering information on back cover

The following from the Theological Workbook of the Old Testament is more proof of the true Name: “Yahweh. The Tetragrammaton YHWH, the L-RD, or Yahweh, the personal name of G-d and his most frequent designation in Scripture, occurring 5,321 times in the OT (KJV and ASV, the L-rd, or, in those contexts where the actual title ‘L-rd’ also occurs, G-d, except KJV, Jehovah, in seven passages where the name is particularly stressed (Ex 6:3; Ps 83:18 ; Isa 12:2; 26:4) or combined with other elements, such as Jehovah Jireh (Gen 22:14; Ex 17:15; Judg 6:24; ASV, consistently Jehovah)… The tetragrammaton YHWH is not ordinarily written with its appropriate Hebrew vowels. But that the original pronunciation was YaHWeH seems probable, both from the corresponding verbal form, the imperfect of its root…” Putting It Together According to the previous definitions, the Savior’s Name is the combination of two words. In the Strong’s Lexicon they are No. 3068—“Yahweh” and No. 3467—“salvation.” When we look at the Savior’s name in Hebrew it is written as ucwhy. Again, Hebrew is written from right to left. Note the first three letters of this name—why. This is the contracted or abbreviated form of Yahweh’s name, pronounced Yah. Again we will quote from the Theological Workbook of the Old Testament in regard to Yah: “YAH. A contracted form of Yahweh. Occurs fifty times (rendered in English as above, except KJV, Jah, in Psalm

68:4, where the name is particularly stressed). Also numerous proper nouns compounded with shortened forms of the divine name ‘Yahweh, e.g.: Jehonathan, ‘Yahweh has given’; ‘Jonathan,’ a substitute name for the same person (compare Gen 1:1 with 1Sam 14:6,8; 2Sam 17:17, 20 with Gen 1:1-2); Jehoshaphat, ‘Yahweh has judged’; alternatively, ‘Joshaphat,’ applied only to two subordinates of David (1Chron 11:43; 15:24).” Furthermore, we can cite the Gesenius Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon on Yah hy. This authoritative work shows the two forms of Yah as being hy and why. It gives several examples in Hebrew showing how these two forms combine with other words to form proper nouns. Both of these forms are transliterated as Yah. The Savior’s name is one of the many proper nouns in the scriptures that is compounded with the shortened form of Yahweh’s name, Yah. In this particular case it combines with the uc form of yahsa (salvation). From this evidence we can conclude that the Savior’s name must be pronounced as Yahshua and not Yeshua. These facts take on even greater meaning if we consider the prophetic passage which deals with the Philadelphia Congregation of Revelation chapter 3. This is obviously an end-time congregation since in verse ten they are offered protection during the tribulation. “Because you have kept the word of my perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon

the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth” (Revelation 3:10, NASU). These end-time true worshipers were complimented for not having denied the Savior’s Name. Yahshua then tells them that He will cause those of the synagogue of Satan to bow before them. “I know your deeds. Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not denied My name. ‘Behold, I will cause those of the synagogue of Satan, who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie — I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and make them know that I have loved you’” (Revelation 3:8-9, NASU). Judaism has for centuries sought to cover up the true pronunciation of Yahweh’s Name. That same false notion has been perpetuated today by those who insist on using the altered form Yeshua, rather than the correct and proper form, Yahshua. Yahshua is truth while Yeshua is error. Our Savior said that His disciples are sanctified by the Truth, John 17:17. As sincere seekers of truth, let us follow the example of the Philadelphia Assembly and not deny the name of our Savior. Let us choose wisely and use the name that means “Yahweh is salvation.” n ( All Bible quotes are from the New American Standard Bible, Updated Edition, unless noted otherwise.)

A

recent survey of selfprofessed believers found that half of all who claim to have been converted and “saved” go back on their conversion within a year. Most do not understand what being saved is and because of that are only half-hearted in their commitment. In most of these failures exists a misunderstanding of salvation and what leads to salvation. Y a h w e h ’ s  W o r d teaches that salvation is not instantly guaranteed in a believer’s life, particularly not so based on some mere confession or statement. The Apostle Paul talked about having a “hope” of salvation in 1Thessalonians 5:8-9. He explained in 2Corinthians 2:15 that being saved is a process that is not completed until the end. In 1Corinthians 3:15 he describes salvation and being saved as being a state no one automatically possesses and is not instantly achieved upon conversion. In fact, he wasn’t even sure of his own future but he simply had the “hope” that he might attain the resurrection. He said in Philippians 3:11-12: “If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after…” If this apostle who was taught by the resurrected Savior Himself (Gal. 1:1112) and who wrote much of the New Testament was not certain of his own salvation, how can anyone today say they are already saved? Yet you hear well-meaning evangelists ask, “Are you saved?” and proceed to tell you just to pronounce a few words to accept the

Savior and you are home free. Those who think they have salvation may then live any kind of life they please and still be assured an eternal reward. Is this what the Word says? In Hebrews 6 we read that there are those who were enlightened and tasted

Falling away means a complete and utter rejection of the truth and the Savior who died for us. People ask, what if I committed some bad sins, am I forever lost? Not if they confess their sins and repent. That is the first step in renewing a right standing with Yahweh. Repentance from Sin You don’t hear much about repentance these days, yet the act of repentance is essential to being a converted child of Almighty Yahweh in the process of becoming saved. Many have missed this key part of conversion in the New Testament. Without understanding repentance and changing of your life, you cannot know what it means to be saved. Before we can repent we need to comprehend what sin is. Everyone knows what crime is. Webster defines a crime as an act that violates a law. A crime is like a sin. Breaking of law is also true for sin. In the clearest and most precise definition in the Bible, 1John 3:4 says that sin is a violation of Biblical law: Here is the Bible’s fundamental definition of sin: “Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” That’s crystal clear! If sin is breaking of law, then NOT breaking of law means not sinning We can break a law in ignorance because we did not know about it. That doesn’t mean that sin is not imputed to us simply because we are unaware of it. We are still guilty. We can speed down a highway not realizing what the speed limit is and

of the prospect of salvation and were even given the Holy Spirit. Yet they are warned that should they fall away from the truth that there is no longer any hope for them. Their salvation would be permanently lost. Feature Article still be charged with a traffic violation. Ignorance does not nullify the law. Everyone has broken Biblical law and therefore all humans are sinners whether they know it or not. The law includes the Ten Commandments. Lying, stealing, killing—these are all acts of sin by Biblical definition. The Bible also gives other laws that Yahweh commands to be observed, and violation of any one of them is also sin by the simple definition of sin. Sin leads to eternal death. If we are guilty as charged of a lifetime of unrepented and willful sin, our hope of salvation will be dashed. The Scriptures tell us that unless we confess our sins, seek forgiveness, and turn completely around to live a different life we are spiritually lost. There is no hope beyond this earthly life unless we change and conform to the Scriptures in how we live. James 4:4 tells us that following the ways of the world make one the enemy of the Heavenly Father Yahweh, and those ways lead to death. On the other hand, Proverbs 12:28 reveals, “In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.” And that is where repentance is pivotal. Repentance moves us away from sin and toward righteousness. Almighty Yahweh will not allow an unrepentant sinner to sit on a throne in His coming Kingdom. The Messiah Yahshua instructed His followers in Matthew 18:3, “Except you be converted and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Conversion requires change and it begins with repentance. Repentance Is a Transformation In Luke 13 we read that there were some murdered Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. In verse 3 our Savior said, “Except you

repent, you shall likewise perish.” Repentance is fundamental. Our sins have separated us from our Father in Heaven. Those sins must be forgiven as the first step to salvation. One Greek word translated repent in the New Testament is metanoeo. It is a verb that includes a realization that one is a sinner. But it goes beyond just realization. It means to change one’s very perception or view of sin and to understand that sin is death. Sin that is practiced in one’s life ultimately leads to everlasting death A related word for repent in the New Testament is the Greek noun metanoia. This word signifies a real change in one’s entire attitude toward sin itself, which affects the whole life. It means

Galatia as a Roman province in 117 AD

a change in how we live. It amounts to a complete turnaround, not just to be sorry for sin but to make a 180-degree reverse course in behavior. It means a renouncement of sin and its destructive ways and to practice it no more. Too often, however, is the more common and erroneous understanding of repentance, signified by the Greek metamelomai. It simply means that I regret what I did because I got caught. It is the kind of regret children often have when their parents punish them for doing something wrong. It is also that kind of regret that Judas Iscariot felt for betraying the Savior Yahshua. But this is a false regret that lacks the power and force to effect permanent change in one’s life. It is shallow

and easily reversed. As soon as the punishment stops, the person is back to his sin again. Genuine, scriptural repentance is the person who admits his sin, seeks forgiveness, and then makes a complete turnaround – permanently stopping what he or she had been doing, never to repeat it. True repentance leads to true conversion. Nothing less will do. Just to say I’m sorry is not enough. Just apologizing for your sin but failing to turn from sinful behavior is not repentance. If I steal your car, then tell you I am sorry but I still keep the car, I have not repented. A transformation must take place in the heart. I also must make everything right again. Ezekiel 18:21 gives us the proper perspective on repentance. The prophet writes: “But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he has committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live. Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? says Yahweh Elohim: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?” In the New Testament, which in most doctrinal respects is a mirror of the Old Testament, we read from Acts 17:30: “And the times of this ignorance Elohim winked at; but now commands all men every where to repent.” Lesson from a Wayward Son Not a man or woman alive is sinless. Everyone on earth has sinned in many ways. Paul tells us this fact in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of Elohim.” Everyone is in need of repentance if they have any hope for life everlasting. The sincerely and truly repentant individual loathes his sin and resolves never to repeat it. The parable of the prodigal son

cording to the Washington Times, a poll in 2007 found that more than three-quarters of Americans believe the Bible is “literally the word of G-d or inspired by the word of G-d,” according to a trio of Gallup surveys, with 19 percent saying the “Good Book is a compendium of myth and legend.”           The three surveys found that an average of 31 percent of the respondents said that the Bible is absolutely accurate and should be taken literally word for word, according to Frank Newport, editor in chief of the Gallup Poll.           Forty-seven percent said the Bible was the inspired word of G-d, while nineteen percent said it was a book of ancient fables, history and moral precepts recorded by man. is an object lesson in what must take place in a sinner’s life under scriptural repentance. It is about a son who squandered his inheritance through riotous living and transgressions. And after suffering miserably—even losing all he had—he is reduced to feeding slop to pigs. He finally comes to his senses, realizing that his life is a deadend road. The first step is realization. He has to admit he has done wrong. No one else can do it for him. Oftentimes we are brought low through the pain of trials for this exact purpose—it is the only thing that will bring us to our senses about the self-destructive, sinful behavior we are in. After we realize this we have a decision to make. If we want to change our standing before our Father in heaven, an honest desire to go in a new direction is mandated. Next comes a deep and total 10

remorse; “And the son said unto him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son’ ” (Luke 15:21). He had to get to the point where he would sacrifice all his self-centered goals, wants, desires, and ambitions and humbly ask for forgiveness both from Yahweh and from his family. Finally, and this is the key to repentance, comes a complete and permanent change in behavior. He must take the first two steps to reach the third. It is a process necessary for anyone who wants to achieve true repentance! This is a lesson in how our Heavenly Father will indeed forgive anyone who sincerely and with a true heart repents and turns to Him. His forgiveness of our transgressions is shown in how the prodigal’s father reacted to his son’s sincerity: “But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on

him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry” (Luke 15:22-24). Sin kills. Sin’s result is always death. The only way to get out of a life of sin and to begin to overcome it is through repentance. King David’s Lesson King David’s heart-rending confession in his Psalm 51 “gold standard” model of repentance is a tribute to the person the Bible calls a man after Yahweh’s own heart. David’s genuineness is clear from the very beginning. When approached about his sin by Nathan the prophet David     immediately    confessed to his murderous and adulterous transgression. He did not shift blame

Feature Article to Bathsheba, saying something like, “Yes, but she tempted me. She should not have done that. She’s guilty, too.” He did not play the blame game or offer personal excuses, like, “Oh it was just one of my weaker moments. After all, I’m just a red-blooded Israelite.” On the contrary. He immediately confessed openly and honestly: “I have sinned.” David sinned in profound ways. There’s no denying that. But just as he showed a complete and utterly sincere repentance, so can we. The Bible is an amazing book. It details the dirt, the warts, the blemishes and the evil in the heart of man. It shows us the good, the bad, and the ugly of life. It is completely honest. No other historically accurate book is so candid and forthright. Because life is an unending string of evil as well as good, we must be aware and ready for any pitfalls that could snare us. The Word shows how to overcome life’s dangers. A Yearning for Yahweh Sincere and true repentance is always followed by a permanent change in behavior. It is the kind of change others will quickly notice. The genuine

believer will put his Heavenly Father Yahweh before everything else in his life. The Apostle Paul shows clearly that a changed heart is a heart like David’s, one that desires to please Yahweh in all things. Many try to have it both ways. They want to live for themselves and for Almighty Yahweh at the same time. Romans 8:7 says, “Because the carnal mind is enmity against Yahweh: for it is not subject to the law of Elohim, neither indeed can be.” We read in Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of Elohim.” Repentance is a necessary preliminary to baptism. In his message Peter commanded those gathered in Acts 2 to “repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Yahshua the Messiah for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” An insincere repentance leads to a false baptism. Only a genuine desire for forgiveness, coupled with a change in heart, mind, and action, will be acceptable to the One who grants salvation to those He chooses. n

If it is, why do we find the admonishment in Hebrews 3:14, “For we are made partakers of the Messiah, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end”? Why are we warned in Hebrews 10:26 that if we willingly persist in sin after knowing the Truth, that we are in danger of judgment and annhiliation? (See also 2Pet. 2:20 and Heb. 12:25.)           The Apostle Paul maintained in 1Thessalonians 5:8 that there is a “hope” of salvation. He wasn’t even sure of his own salvation, Philippians 3:11, 1Corinthinas 9:27. Surely the greatest evangelist of the New Testament should be sure of his own prospects for being saved, shouldn’t he? In Revelation 2:10 Yahshua prophesied to our day that only if we remained faithful until death would we be awarded a crown of life. Hebrews 6:4-6 says that for those who know but reject the truth in favor of a sinful lifestyle, that it is impossible to renew them again to repentance. In 1Corinthians 6:9-10 Paul lists various sins that will keep an unrighteous person out of the Kingdom to come.           Justification means declaring to be just or righteous, just as if you had not sinned. It comes first and is achieved through our faith (Rom. 3:28) through forgiveness by Yahweh’s grace (Rom. 3:24) at conversion (Acts 3:19) for our past sins (Rom. 3:25).           Sanctification means consecration, or a setting apart from the world of sin for a special purpose, and is accomplished by obedience to Yahweh following His forgiveness, John 17:17; Romans 3:31. n

Getting to the Heart of

Valentine’s Day by Donald Mansager

E

very February 14 we see an “angelic” infant with a bow and arrow aiming for the heart of his “valentine.” Cupids are everywhere with bows and arrows, hearts and paper lace, chocolates and birds, and flowers. But just where did these symbols and celebration of the 14th of February come from? Should the believer be honoring this seemingly innocent day on which so many remember sweethearts and loves? A Priest with a Heart The origin of this day is unclear, with more than one explanation. The most accepted legend is that a Roman priest named Valentine had a soft spot for young people. When the Roman Empire needed soldiers, Emperor Claudius II decreed that no one could marry or become engaged. Claudius believed that 12

marriage made men want to stay at home instead of out fighting wars. The kindly Valentine defied the Emperor’s decree and secretly performed weddings for a number of young couples. He was arrested, imprisoned, and put to death. Another legend holds that Valentine was aiding persecuted Christians and was imprisoned. A jailer and his family were so impressed by his sincerity that they became Christians themselves. Valentine was fond of the jailer’s blind daughter and by a miracle restored her sight. On the morning of his execution he sent her a farewell message signed, “From your Valentine.” February 14th Fertility Festival Valentine was beheaded supposedly on February 14. Not so coincidentally, this is also the eve of an important and more ancient Roman festival, the

Lupercalia. (Lupus is Latin for wolf.) On this evening Roman youths drew names of girls who would be their partners during this ceremony. To the Romans, Lupercalia was serious business. Mark Antony was master of the Lupercali College of Priests. He chose the Lupercalia festival in 44 B.C.E. as the proper time for offering the crown to Julius Caesar. On February 15 the Luperci priests gathered at the cave of Lupercal, where according to legend, Romulus and Remus—founders of Rome—were nursed by a mother wolf. Following a sacrifice, two youths of noble birth were brought forward. After a ceremony, they ran through the Roman streets, lashing about with goatskin thongs. The streets would be crowded with young women because a lash of the sacred thong was believed to

increase their fertility. The goatskin thongs were called februa and the lashing the februatio, both stemming from a Latin word meaning to purify. From it comes the name for the month February. Long after Rome had become a walled city and the seat of a powerful empire, the Lupercalia lived on. When Roman armies invaded what are now France and Britain in the first century B.C.E., they took with them many pagan customs. Included was the Lupercalia. Unholy Union By the fourth century Christianity became the dominant religion in Rome and the Lupercalia was declared unlawful. Initially in the empire the church endeavored to stamp out pagan practices brought in by the heathen. “Unable to abolish some of the pagan festivals that the people loved, they accepted these and gave them Christian names,” we read in The Story of Valentine Symbols, by Edna Barth. Barth explains, “So it was with the Lupercalia, which survived late into the fifth century. St. Valentine’s name was given to a festival that had celebrated springtime and fertility in human beings and other animals. And, do what the church might, the ancient meaning never quite left it. Memories of the Lupercalia as a celebration of mating were handed down, attaching themselves to the saint’s name.” So it was, on the eve of the ancient fest of the Lupercalia the Romans habitually preserved the memory of an ancient rural deity, Faunus. The public beheading of Valentine the Christian became a pagan’s victory—here was a priest who professed the Bible, beheaded at this heathen celebration! Frank Staff writes in his book, The Valentine and Its Origins, “In later years when the early Christian fathers were busy obliterating pagan superstitions and dates by substituting those of the Christian belief, names of many of the martyred Saints were used

to replace the old festivals. “In this way St. Valentine, having suffered on the eve of the Lupercalia, the 14th of February was now to perpetuate forever the memory of this festival of the return of the Spring when a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love and when the birds begin mating. “Centuries later it was usual on St. Valentine’s Day for young men to draw by lots the names of young women, a custom that lingered in some of the more remote villages of the British Isles right up to Victorian times. Some accounts written during the Victorian era of St. Valentine’s Day maintain that the putting of the names of young women into a box to be drawn for by the men was part of the ceremony of the Lupercalia, and has been repeated so often as to be believed true. But it has been authoritatively stated that this has yet to be proved.” Not all historians agree with Staff, and see a direct connection between drawing names for Valentine’s Day and the Lupercalia. Strong evidence also exists that the custom of sending valentines and other rituals on February 14 has erotic origins connected to a licentious festival. Lupercalia was a spring celebration involving peculiar fertility rites and especially involved young people. The little cherub called cupid, from the Latin cupido or “desire,” is actually the Greek deity of love known as Eros. Alexandrian poets made him popular in Rome (Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedia, p. 2542) Valentine’s

Day customs in the United States trace to early settlers from Germany and Great Britain. Bottom Line: The Dollar Sign Valentine’s Day is immortalized by manufacturers of greeting cards and candy. Florists and clothiers see the chance to induce customers through yet one more holiday to part with their cash. A gift at Valentine’s Day proves your love, is their universal message. The big problem with involvement in such worldly holidays and special days of man is their rank pagan origins and rites that conflict with Scriptural instruction. Even more, these days have replaced the true, Biblical observances commanded by our Creator. Paganism has always sought to replace True Worship. The one condemnation Yahweh repeatedly leveled against Israel was their desire to participate in the heathenism of those around them and to worship other deities in place of Yahweh. We as believers must never place anything before Yahweh and His way of life. We must give up the ways of a deceived world that has no love of Him. “Wherefore come out from among them, and be separate, says Yahweh, and touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you,” 2Corinthians 6:17. It is staggering how much our modern culture is steeped in heathen, truth-supplanting tradition. The days of Lupercalia are with us even in subtle ways. As one writer observed, “Today we still refer to one who fancies himself with the ladies as something of a ‘wolf,’ and when a pretty girl walks down the street young men give a ‘wolf whistle,’ which shows that the spirit of the Lupercalia is still with us.” Yahweh’s true Spirit is here as well, and available to those who have a genuine desire to live honestly and purely for Him. A position of rulership in His coming Kingdom awaits those who do. n

your Web site and all your beliefs. I really would like to know the truth! I have some friends who follow the Hebrew Bible and teachings and have told me the Creator’s Name is Yahuah and the Messiah’s name is Yahusha. Are they wrong?” –Kyle, email Despite the fact that nearly all credible scholars and biblical references confirm and use “Yahweh,” there are still those who insist on using the “u” in the Name, i.e. Yahuah or Yahueh. Typically, those who employ the u form tend to over-emphasize the sound of the u as well—Yah-OOah (or -eh). The letter in question, the waw and third letter of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton, is represented by the W. The development of the letter U shows a late progression. The American Heritage Dictionary says that the W came to be pronounced as a V in later Latin (proof that “Yahveh” is historically impossible). Then this source says under the letter U, “The letter U originated in the early Middle Ages as a cursive version of V.” The w (waw) in Hebrew is a weak letter. The w even drops out in some English words like sword, wrong, wrap, law, wrench, two and wrinkle. The waw is almost a guttural, and is nearly swallowed in ancient biblical Hebrew, the opposite of over-emphasis given by some to the u (oo) sound. Who pronounces “answer” as “ans-OO-er”? It’s no different from the improper pronunciation Yah-OO-ah (or –eh).           The Encyclopaedia Judaica notes that the true pronunciation of Yahweh’s Name was never lost, being pronounced “Yahweh.” 14

“We see in the scripture the examples of where polygamy was allowed but got the man into a heap of trouble with Yahweh in the end, i.e. David, Solomon. Aside from these examples in scripture, can you tell me why polygamy is wrong today?” -email Is polygamy found in the Word? Yes. Is polygamy what Yahweh intended when He created a man and woman for marriage? No. Is polygamy how Yahweh defines a family? No. Did Yahweh give Adam more than one wife? No. Did he ever tell Adam he could have more later? No.           Genesis 2:24 defines marital boundaries: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Notice the singular “wife,” not “wives.” Yahweh never intended a man to have more than one wife.           What Yahweh may have allowed in the Old Testament (because of man’s hard heart) Yahshua raised the bar on in the New. Yahshua said even to look on a woman with lust is committing adultery, Matthew 5:28. How can lusting after another woman be adultery if additional wives are allowed?           The following passages are meaningless if Yahweh approves of polygamy: • Matt. 19:9: “And I say unto you, Whoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery…” In Yahweh’s eyes the man is still married to the woman. But the sin of adultery is irrelevant if polygamy is sanctioned. • 1Tim. 3:12: “Let the deacons be

the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.” Elders and deacons set the standard of behavior for the whole assembly. A key to that standard is one wife, a truth the next reference reinforces. • 1Tim. 3:2: “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach.” The limit of one wife per man is Yahweh’s prerequisite for sacred office and anything less disqualifies a man from pastoral positions. “In your statement of beliefs, you describe the Holy Spirit as a force...can you be more specific? Also, can you give me your interpretation of the Trinity?” – D, email Based on Scripture the Holy Spirit is the force or power of Almighty Yahweh that guides and directs His people. In Scripture the Holy Spirit is used an extension of Yahweh Himself (e.g. Luke 11:13, Eph. 4:30, 1Thess. 4:8).           The word “Spirit” is derived from the Hebrew ruach and the Greek word pneuma.           “Ruwach (roo’-akh); from OT: 7306; wind; by resemblance breath…” (Strong’s Concordance). “Pneuma (pnyoo’-mah); from NT:4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit…” (Strong’s Concordance).           Notice that for both words the first definition conveys the idea of wind or a current of air, neither of which are living beings, but a force or power. In the same way the Holy Spirit is the force or power of our Father in heaven. Another reason we maintain that the

Holy Spirit is not a being is that we never see anyone communicating or praying directly to the Spirit. In addition, in the opening salutations of the various New Testament books we often find the writer addressing the Father and Son, but never the Holy Spirit.           The Scriptures are clear that the Father and Son are not equal, as found in the Trinity doctrine. We find multiple statements that the Father is greater than the Son in both knowledge and authority: •          “But of that day and that hour knows no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father” (Mark 13:32, KJV). •          “Yahshua said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father” (Matt. 20:23, NIV). •          “You have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If you loved me, you would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I” (John 14:28, KJV). •          “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Messiah; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Messiah is Yahweh” (1Cor. 11:3, KJV). •          “One Elohim and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Eph. 4:6, KJV). •          “My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:29, KJV). The Trinity - Fact or Fiction? To be considered “Christian” one must believe in the Trinity, most say. Is this a biblical teaching, or one that traces back through the mother church to ancient pagan worship? We report, you decide! See back cover to order

We do not believe in the rapture as is commonly taught. Scripture confirms that Yahshua’s coming will occur at the end of the Great Tribulation (Matt. 24:29-31), at which time we will meet Him in the clouds (1Thess. 4:17) as He returns to the Mount of Olives (Zech. 14:4). Once Yahshua returns His saints will dwell on earth (Rev. 5:10, 20:6).           The pre-tribulation rapture idea was first introduced by John Nelson Darby in 1827 and popularized by the Scofield Reference Bible (1909). Until that time the teaching of a rapture preceding the Second Coming of the Messiah was largely unknown.           One passage often used to support a rapture is Matthew 24, where the Messiah stated:           “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also Request our free booklet “Is There a Coming Rapture?” for an in-depth study on this subject. the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left” (Matt 24:37-41).           This passage is not referring to a pre-tribulation rapture, but to the destruction that will follow the return of Yahshua the Messiah, the same kind of ultimate destruction that occurred in the days of Noah.           We avoid cremation, which scripturally was reserved for the wicked (e.g., Lev. 20:14, 21, 9, Josh. 7:15, 25, 1 Sam. 31:12-13, Mal. 4:3). It is also significant to note that the righteous enjoyed proper burial (e.g., Genesis 23:8, Ex. 13:19, Heb. 11:22). For these reasons a believer should seek only burial.           Regarding what Bible we use, most of us use the standard King James Version. One reason for this is the many key study references tied to this translation (e.g., Strong’s Concordance). “Please explain why you observe Old Testament days of worship? Paul seems to say that these days are no longer important, like Galatians 4:10 and Colossians 2:16.” Our Savior and every Apostle and disciple in the New Testament kept the Feast days commanded by Yahweh for His people Israel. Feast of Unleavened Bread with His disciples before He died, Matthew 26:17. He became the Passover Lamb sacrificed for the sins of the world. He kept the other Feasts like Tabernacles as well, Luke 2:42. Surprising to some, the champion of Christians, the Apostle Paul, kept these Feast days as well, as is clear from many passages in the New Testament. In Acts 18:21 he was resolute: “I must by all means keep this feast that comes to Jerusalem.”           All the big events in Scripture occurred or will occur at a Feast times. At Passover was the release of Israel and our Savior’s atoning death; His resurrection occurred during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. On Pentecost both the law and Holy Spirit were given. Yahshua will likely return at Trumpets. Tabernacles and Last Great Day represent the establishing of the Kingdom.           Galatians 4:10 speaks of pagan observances, not Yahweh’s appointed times. Colossians 2:16 is an admonishment not to let outsiders judge the believer when it comes to Yahweh’s special days. “Why do you believe New Testament worship has Hebraic roots?” -email First, virtually all the writers of the New Testament were Hebrews, the Apostle Paul among them. He was a Pharisee and served on the Sanhedrin, the Hebrew court. The native tongue of Hebrews was Hebrew, not Greek. Any time the writers of the New Testament heard a language from heaven, it was in the Hebrew tongue. These facts alone reveal that the New Testament (Covenant) has a Hebrew base.           Second, the internal evidence shows that the New Testament is filled with Hebraic mannerisms and expressions. These don’t make any sense in original Greek, or English, but make perfect sense in original Hebrew. The New 16

Testament has many Hebraic idioms that would never have come out of a Greek original. For instance, what writer in English would use a Spanish idiom like: I asked if the butter is grease (meaning I didn’t beat around the bush, or a German idiom like: “To have a bird [in the head], meaning are you crazy? One would not normally use foreign language idioms when communicating in English.           The Hebrew waw consecutive (consecutive sentences beginning with the word “and”) is a Hebraism not used in Greek. It is found not only all over the Old Testament, especially in the first five books, but also is abundant in the New Testament, especially in the Evangels and Revelation.           Third, Paul’s letters were written by Paul to small Messianic congregations in Asia Minor, Greece and Rome. These early Messianics were Jews of the Dispersion, men and women of Hebrew origin. They spoke Hebrew as their native tongue. Paul would naturally write to them in the Hebrew tongue. They would in turn explain his letters to any converts from foreign lands.           Fourth, Greek was not a popular language in the Galilee region nor was it the language of the Apostles or the Temple. First-century Jewish historian Flavius Josephus wrote, “Our nation does not encourage those that learn the languages of many nations.” In fact, the Hebrews detested the Gentile Greeks. And this highly educated priest said he himself had a very hard time with Greek. “Please explain Romans 10:4. Paul seems to be saying that the Messiah was the end or termination of the Law.” - email The King James reads: “For Messiah is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” The International

RESTORATION TIMES MAGAZINE January/February 2011

Standard Version is much closer to the meaning of the Greek: “For the Messiah is the culmination of the law as far as righteousness is concerned for everyone who believes.”           That this verse abolishes the law is one of the most popular misnomers today. “End” here is the Greek telos and means goal. It doesn’t mean to cease or bring to a close. He is the goal to which the law brings us. The purpose of the law is to make us more like Him in behavior and thinking.           We can demonstrate that telos does not mean termination, but rather goal, by looking at other passages where it is found: • James 5:11 uses the same term telos when it says “You have heard of the patience of Job and seen the end of Yahweh.” Our Creator has certainly not come to end, and neither has His law. But properly translated, through the patience of Job we can see the ultimate object or aim of his patient suffering, which is Yahweh and His purpose to teach His ways. • 1Peter 1:9 also uses telos in speaking of the Savior, it says, “Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.” Certainly your faith doesn’t end with the Messiah. But He is surely the goal of faith. “End result” would have expressed the Greek far more precisely.           Here’s telos in 1Peter 1:9 as translated in other versions:           God’s Word Translation: “As you obtain the salvation that is the goal of your faith.” The International Standard Version: “Because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” • The word telos is also used in 1Timothy 15: “Now the end (telos) of the commandment is love.” The commandment certainly doesn’t end with love. But the goal of the commandment is love, a fact expressed by Yahshua in the two great laws: love Yahweh and love your neighbor as yourself, Luke 10:27.

particular people distinct from that of other nations.”           This passage confirms that when we speak in a tongue or language that is unknown the words cannot be understood and are therefore considered a mystery. An example would be if we traveled to Kenya and heard a man preaching in Swahili. For the average American his language would be a mystery. This is why Paul says he who speaks in tongues edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.           Now what does it mean to prophesy? The word “prophesies” comes from the Greek propheteuo, meaning

“…to foretell events, speak under inspiration, or to exercise the prophetic office” (Strong’s Concordance). In this passage Paul was likely referring to teaching under the inspiration of Yahweh’s Holy Spirit. Prophecy or teaching is what is most valuable to the assembly. This is the reason Paul said that he would rather prophesy than to speak in tongues. A tongue or language serves no value if those who hear are unfamiliar with that glossa or language. This is why Paul adds in verse 5, “…except he interpret.” A Great Way to Teach To understand the purpose of this gift,

F

rom Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians we find that the gift of tongues was used as a tool to evangelize the good news of the Messiah to the unbelieving or unconverted.            “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto Elohim: for no man understands him; howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he that prophesies speaks unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4 He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the assembly. 5 I would that you all spake with tongues, but rather that you prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, except he interpret, that the assembly may receive edifying” (1Cor. 14:1-5).           In verse 2 Paul explains that when we speak in unknown tongues that we do not speak to man, but in mysteries. What exactly does he mean? As we learned in part 1, the word “tongues” comes from the Greek word glossa meaning languages. The Thayer’s Greek Lexicon defines this word as “the language or dialect used by a

The Rosetta Stone may be the most popular icon of modern language discoveries. It is an ancient Egyptian relic with a decree issued at Memphis, Egypt, in 196 BC on behalf of King Ptolemy V. let us now continue reading: “Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9 So likewise you, except you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for you shall speak into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaks a barbarian, and he that speaks shall be a barbarian unto me. 12 Even so you, forasmuch as you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that you may excel to the edifying of the church. 13 Wherefore let him that speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also” (1Cor. 14:6-15).           In verse 6 we find again that speaking in a tongue is of no profit unless we speak to convey a teaching or doctrine. The word doctrine is derived from the Greek word didache meaning “instruction.” This is again one of those gifts that most benefit the assembly. When we teach Yahweh’s Word we come to a deeper knowledge of Him and through that instruction we become better disciples. Speaking in a language that is unknown, or worse yet, uttering sounds without meaning or purpose, 18

does not serve to edify.           Paul here uses the analogy of musical instruments and states that unless the instrument makes an identifiable sound it serves no value. In the Old Testament the trumpet was often the main method of communication for Israel, including the calling to war (Num. 10:9). If the sound of the trumpet was incorrect, confusion would have erupted. This same concept holds true when we speak in tongues or languages that are unknown to our audience.           Paul in verse 10 said that there were many kinds of languages and that none were without significance. The word “significance,” is from the Greek word aphonos, meaning to be “voiceless, i.e. mute or without meaning.” This Greek word confirms that Paul was not

referring to meaningless babble but to recognized languages as learned in part 1 of this article. Even the angels themselves possess a tongue or known language (1Cor. 13:1), likely the Hebrew language (Acts 26:14).           Paul goes on here to say that if the tongue or language is unknown that “he that speaks shall be a barbarian….” In Greek the word “barbarian” literally means, “a foreigner.” Therefore, those who speak in different or unknown languages are as a foreigner or alien. Unless the language is understood it is of no benefit. It is for this reason that

RESTORATION TIMES MAGAZINE January/February 2011

Paul states in verse 16, “Else when you shall bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupies the room of the unlearned say Amen at your giving of thanks, seeing he understands not what you say?” In this passage Paul reiterates that if we speak in a tongue or language given by the Holy Spirit that is unknown to the audience that it is unfruitful or with out profit to our natural minds.           In verse 22 Paul affirms a truth that many believers overlook. “Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serves not for them that believe not, but for them which believe” (1Cor. 14:22). For the Unbelievers Paul verifies that the gift of tongues is a sign not to those who believe, but to those who disbelieve. With this in mind it seems odd that many groups and organizations would base their main source of validation on a sign that is for unbelievers.           However, this is precisely what we find with many charismatic assemblies today. Some believe that a person is never completely converted unless he or she speaks in tongues. This is not only unfounded scripturally, but contradicts the purpose of this gift.           If the gift of tongues is for the unbeliever, what then is for the believer? Paul goes on to say that prophecy is for the believer. Prophecy is inspired teaching from Yahweh’s Word. It provides the knowledge and instruction allowing us to become better disciples of our Father in heaven and Savior.           In verse 23, Paul asks, “If therefore the whole assembly be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that you are mad?”           The word “mad” comes from the Greek word mainomai, meaning, “one who so speaks that he seems not to be in his right mind” (Thayer’s

Office Building

Project Update

W

e are very happy to announce that we have completed the concrete for the new office building floor and are currently framing interior walls. Many of the volunteers at YRM are elated to see this needed building take shape, but the progress may soon come to a screeching halt. As you might imagine, concrete is costly. The concrete phase has depleted much of the funds we have received for this needed project. The next big expense will be the heating and cooling system. We are asking for any financial help you can give to keep this project going until completion. This building will serve as the new operation hub for the ministry. Administration offices, television production studio, mailing, printing and storage will all be utilized in this new structure. With the added space we hope to be more efficient in reaching many more in these last days. “Thank you” to those who have helped so far. Greek Lexicon). This would be no different from visiting an assembly with members speaking Spanish, German, and Chinese simultaneously. Such an assembly would be viewed as senseless. This is why prophecy or inspired teaching is preferred or greater than tongues. As Paul states in verse 24, “But if all prophesy [teach by inspiration], and there come in one that believes not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all….” Paul confirms here that if we prophesy or teach, that all are profited or convinced, even the visitor that might be uninformed. Examples of Tongues Let’s now consider some of the instances of tongues we find in the Word. One of the first passages where we find this gift being used is Acts 10:44-48, “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify Elohim. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Spirit as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Master [Yahshua]. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”           From this Scripture we find that when the gentiles heard the Word that they received the Holy Spirit. Immediately they spoke in tongues or languages and magnified Yahweh. When it was evident that the gentiles had received the Spirit, they were then baptized into the name of Yahshua the Messiah. Interestingly, in this example we find that the gentiles received the Spirit prior to baptism. Receiving 20

the Spirit prior to baptism was not common. In almost all other instances, the reverse occurred.           The gift of tongues served a two-fold purpose. It was a sign of conversion to those who were filled with the Spirit and a confirmation to those circumcised Jews that witnessed this miraculous event. Here the gift of tongues was a sign to show that Yahweh was calling out the gentiles who prior to it were considered unbelievers or barbarians.           A second example of this gift is

in Acts 19:1-8, “And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, he said unto them, Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Spirit. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul,

RESTORATION TIMES MAGAZINE January/February 2011

John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Messiah Yahshua. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Master Yahshua. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of Yahweh.”           This account speaks of two baptisms, a baptism of repentance and a baptism of the Holy Spirit. Interestingly, this is the only instance of this difference. While John’s baptism offered opportunity for repentance, it did not offer the remission from sins and receiving of the Holy Spirit, as with Yahshua’s baptism.           A connection is also found between the receiving of the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues. Immediately upon baptism and the receiving of the Holy Spirit, we find that these twelve new converts spoke in tongues or languages as a sign or validation of their conversion. As with all of Yahweh’s gifts, glossa served an important purpose. It was this important gift that partially led to the conversion of the 3,000 at Pentecost (Acts 2).           As Paul admonished the Thessalonian assembly, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1Thess. 5:21).           We have seen from parts 1 and 2 of this series that the common understanding of tongues does not corroborate with Scripture. This gift of the Holy Spirit was not meaningless babble, but an effective tool that our Father in heaven used to spread the Truth, to demonstrate His great power, n and to confirm one’s conversion.

hat a trap spending in excess can be, to the point where some are losing house and home. It’s no secret that money woes are a factor in many divorces. When is enough really enough when it comes to personal spending habits?           For me, I just love going to secondhand stores. My children know most of their clothes aren’t from the mall, and they’re okay with that. I like knowing I am saving money; I enjoy being a good steward (managing resources wisely) of financial and natural resources when I buy used clothing. But even in these situations the temptation to buy more than what I need is a real issue.           I sometimes fill my cart with items that may only be a buck or two, telling myself it’s all so cheap. But, the bottom line is that we need to be mindful of our needs more than our wants. Do I really need three new skirts, even at $2 apiece? Step back and ask, “Do I need this?” And, ultimately, “Can I afford this?” We can save ourselves unnecessary stress, which may include buyer’s remorse or the consequence of spending beyond one’s means, if we consider these questions. We can also save money, and in today’s economic slump this is the real bottom line.           There is this mixed-up idea that buying something on sale always saves us money. Not so—sorry. If you don’t need it you can save even more money by not buying it at all. Many are living from paycheck to paycheck, not saving for the rainy days ahead.           Life doesn’t have to be about keeping up appearances and giving gifts because we feel obligated to give,

or buying items from a particular store because it’s the “in” place to shop. Life is about living in accordance to the Word of Yahweh. Yahshua himself told his disciples to drop everything and follow him. Wow, if I would drop all of my things at once I could cause a small earthquake.           Think about how much you have at home. Do you buy things you don’t need? If so, ask yourself why you bought this or that.           When I moved to Missouri from

As a mother, “ raising her children

in the way of scripture, I am always reminding them to be thankful for what they have.

Pennsylvania last year, with my husband and five children, I donated truckloads of things to local charities. We wound up actually selling very little, having given most of it away. I couldn’t believe how much “stuff” we collected over the years. I was shown

just how much clothing I bought because I wanted more than I needed. I found things I didn’t even know I had.           The experience of moving gave me the motivation I needed to say “No” the next time I was tempted to buy out of want. I decided I didn’t want to “shop ‘til I dropped.” I didn’t and still don’t want to be materialistic.           One of the reasons we moved to Missouri was for a slower-paced, lowoctane lifestyle in the countryside where we could work toward selfsufficiency. Sick and tired of seductive consumerism, I now find happiness in being content with what I have. I still enjoy decorating my home and making things look cozy and nice, but I am mindful of spending now; I make things myself, and I try to be creative in repurposing my existing décor.           As a mother, raising her children in the way of scripture, I am always reminding them to be thankful for what they have. I had also better be sure to live true to what I am teaching.           It’s so easy to look at your neighbor and want more than you have, but just say “No” to sliding those plastic cards, and go green—meaning spend what you have and no more. It is a biblical principle found especially in the Proverbs. n

he harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” Luke 10:2           Recently I received a phone call from a fellow believer in Florida. With the Xmas season approaching he was eager to obtain and distribute some copies of YRM’s booklet “December 25, Birthday of the Sun.” He said that it was his “duty” and his eagerness was contagious. I have since left pamphlets at offices myself – the dentist, the doctor, hairdresser, etc.           Years ago as a new believer I was often reluctant to voice my beliefs. Even though I wanted to shout the truth out loud or write a best seller on what I had learned that would be read

around the world, I tempered my words for fear of the 22

certain ridicule and confrontations I would encounter. Those closest to us, our family and friends in whom I had often confided, feared we were under the spell of a cult and I found it best to stay silent. Interestingly, no one wanted to know WHY we believed as we did, but were intent only upon convincing us that we were somehow wrong.

of observing Yahweh’s Feasts or abstaining from unclean foods or pagan celebrations will sometimes elicit inquiries that I answer simply in small, digestible morsels. Yet, seeds are planted and if the soil is fertile those earnestly seeking will return wanting more information. Many who are not yet ready to receive His truth may remember our words at a later time when they are ready.           Often it is clear that the questioner just wants to argue and is not really interested in learning anything that may contradict his traditional (and untested) beliefs. We shouldn’t condemn those who still follow man-made traditions or even those who reject the Scriptures completely – there is so much they do not know. Do not be disheartened by those who would mock or otherwise treat your message with disrespect – instead pray that their hearts and minds be opened.           While women are instructed to stay silent during assembly, we have much to share and there are many other opportunities in which to do it. Carry pamphlets in your purse to leave on magazine tables in offices – they should be a welcomed relief from some of the more questionable articles. Study scripture to enable yourself to speak knowledgeably to those asking questions, and if you don’t know the answer, offer to help find it. So much of humanity is questioning and searching for answers. For reasons unknown, much has been revealed to us. We are duty-bound to share that information with others. Boldly, yet humbly, sisters, share His truth in whatever manner or using whatever talent given you. Yahshua gave us the commission in Matthew 28 to go and teach all nations. We ladies should do this in our own homes and among our n acquaintances whenever we can.

Letters Likes Magazine’s Approach “Received my first issue of Restoration Times, thank you so much. Read the entire magazine in one sitting. I love the bold yet humble way all the articles were written. Please put me on the permanent mailing list.” – T R, Ohio Plain Truths Ignored “I know we are told to search the Scriptures and prove all things. Also that only the drawn can come. I don’t understand how so many well-meaning people can close their eyes to so many plain truths. But then I can see where He has poured a spirit of slumber on them. I also see where He will open their eyes in the future. They will be ashamed of the lies and half-truths they have supported. One day soon there will be a better world where Messiah Yahshua rules and all will worship in truth and spirit.” – MS, Alabama Site Shared “I recently received two booklets from your ministry and I really appreciated the information I learn from them. One was about the Sabbath day and the other one about Halloween. I hope I can make a donation soon, I’m learning a lot. I really like saying Yahweh (god) and Yahshua (J-sus) in Hebrew. I hope some day I can learn Hebrew so I can read an actual Hebrew Bible. I shared the site with some of my friends from church. I hope they enjoy it and appreciate it as much as I do!” – TA, email

First Online Sabbath Service “Until now, I have prayed to G-d for guidance. And I have no doubt that He led me here! Now I shall pray to Yahweh. So today was my first online Sabbath Service with what I believe to be Yahweh’s truth! I need to know where to get a Bible translation that you use as mine uses titles and the name Jehovah. I must tell you that I am just elated to find your site! I can hardly wait until next Sabbath. In the meantime I will dig into all your online material.” – LW, email -We are still working on the Restoration Study Bible that will restore the proper names of Father and Son. We hope to have at least an electronic version sometime this spring. (See ad on page 6) We are pleased to learn that our live Sabbath Webcast is of value to you (Visit http://yrm.org/yrmchannel.htm) You can also download past Sabbath messages at www.yrm. org. – ED Why Not Change Other Names? “I am listening to the message on the name of Yahweh titled, “Call It Identity Theft.” I have written before regarding the name of not only Yahweh, but all the people in the Bible. Perhaps you could revisit this topic in your studies. I am sure you are aware that the names like Zachariah, Jeremiah and Isaiah are not their actual pronunciation of their names since they contain the name of Yahweh. I do not recall hearing them pronounced in their true Hebrew form in your messages, but I may be mistaken. And I am sure you know in the new covenant Peter and Paul are also not their real names. Is your use of these names so that people tuning into your messages that are not far along enough to understand this truth do not get confused or

do you not feel they are necessary? … If you go through and look at all the names in the Bible it is our responsibility to pronounce them as well as we can. It may seem a bit strange to the outsider, but then again most of what a True Believer does seems strange to the outsider.” -MD, email -The Scriptures tell us that the true name of the Father and Son are to be held sacred and not denied. Because His Name includes the Father’s, it is said of Yahshua in Philippians 2:9, “Wherefore Elohim also has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.” We employ their true names exclusively in place of common titles and substitute names. Nowhere, however, do we find that the names of men are deemed holy. Sometimes Yahweh changed the names of the patriarchs to reflect a different role. Many names in Scripture are derived even from languages other than Hebrew, given exclusively in Greek or Latin. These include Cornelius, Festus, Onesiphorus, Philemon, Philip, Stephanus, and Fortunatus. – ED Enjoying All Things “First off, just want to commend your excellent website. Everything is superb, we love your Discover the Truth programs (they will continue on, won’t they?) We found you about four Sabbaths ago, and have enjoyed all things. We listen into the live services too. Thank you for making that available. However, I’ve tried to order from the forms and I’m not sure it’s working properly. Yes, I just click on request, but I’m not sure it “takes.” Also, I’ve tried to register for the chat feature. It took me to TikiLive, but neither is that registration working. Is there a particular link to go to other than that? My husband and I have sent our first check in support of this great work. We plan to send more.” – L. T., email We checked both our site’s order forms and TikiLive and found them operating properly. Thank you for the kind words and the support! – ED
