Whilst some rooms may be closed due to the event, the majority will be open for spectators to browse at their leisure.

Complementing our stunning setting of the ‘royal palace by the sea’ are magnificent grounds and gardens. With breathtaking views at every turn, the gardens provide the perfect spot to relax and discover seasonal colour throughout the year. The ornate terrace gardens - renovated in 2016-17 as part of a major conservation project - are a riot of tulips in spring, reflecting the height of Victorian fashion.

The mild Mediterranean climate allows stunning bedding displays in the summer, which visitors can admire during July’s Horse Trials. Don’t forget to take time to wander around the Victorian walled garden to marvel at the delightful espaliered fruit trees and explore the wider parkland with its historic trees, many planted by Prince Albert himself.

“We have quite a charming beach to ourselves,” wrote Queen Victoria in 1845, and it was here at Osborne Beach that her majesty regularly bathed, and where her children learnt to swim. Enjoy the magnificent views out to sea from Queen Victoria’s alcove, and pop inside her bathing machine to see where she got undressed. WHY OSBORNE? As a past competitor who has spent my whole life in the industry, I have a real passion to share and introduce this amazing sport to a wider audience. We know that people enjoy the sport and flock to watch it in the thousands; Badminton and Burghley are both in the top 10 of the highest spectators events in the UK.

We are working to ensure compact locations and formats for ease of viewing. They are also easier to stage as they require less land and less disruption to the land so we can minimise the impact on day-to-day life at the venues.

With less disruption these events are more attractive to iconic venues.

But we also know that there is a perception about our sport and it is difficult to convey what a day at a horse trials is all about. Traditional events are often hard to follow as results can often take a long time. As a niche sport we need to make it more accessible via shorter, snappier and easier to follow formats so we can engage a wider audience.

I have a real passion to introduce as many people as possible to the sport, so we are issuing all primary school children on the Isle of Wight with a free ticket. Bringing children to Osborne to meet some of the leading riders in the UK and their horses will hopefully inspire some of them to enter the sport (if not as an elite rider then as someone who will benefit from the sport in some way).

Here at Osborne visitors can see all the riders doing all the disciplines with results and prize giving all in one day.

Engagement with horses is valuable in many ways.

Short classes complete each discipline quickly making them easier to follow, keeping spectators interested.

The arenas and cross country are all accessible from the lawn making it possible to see 70% of the action from one point. The public love animals and we are one of the few sports that involves animals. With traditional formats, top horses do not competed regularly. Each time they compete over traditional distances there is greater wear on their limbs and a risk of injury. Osborne is all about shorter distances and ensuring that the horses limit the impact on their limbs.

By reducing this we can see them compete more often in shortened formats and we will be able to create better equine stories, personalities and public engagement. We also need to create an environment where riders and horses can meet the public; Osborne highlights a few of these.

We aim to allow visitors to arrive at eleven and go by four, having seen all the action, had a good lunch and enjoyed time with family and friends; arrive after a leisurely breakfast and be home in time for tea! Guests can see all the action from very close quarters so there is no need to walk miles. The climax of the day is the final cross country which is finished by mid afternoon.

The dependence of an animal on its rider builds bonds and breaks down many inhibitions and challenges.

Introducing people to exercise vital for wellbeing and leisure riding is a popular pastime with over 2 million people in the UK riding regularly.

Going to events is a healthy family day out with something for everyone to enjoy including the estates themselves, many of which are private and not usually accessible to the public. Our events are all dog-friendly where you can walk the course.

Inspiring the young into sport to achieving great things is a legacy that London 2012 promised. We are aiming to continue that legacy at Osborne by bringing children and world champions together. Come and meet the riders in the rider zone, take a selfie with them, meet the horses and feel the excitement of our sport.

Osborne offers one of the most unique locations in the UK with spectacular viewing from the terraces. With its Royal history and location on a holiday island, it is a truly unique spot. I do not believe there is a more outstanding location for our sport anywhere.

Warrior Feature

WARRIOR

THE ISLAND’S HERO by Brough Scott

Warrior was born in the spring of 1908 and spent all of his 33 years on the Island with the small exception of 1914-18 when he was in France helping to win thewar. He defied, bombs, bullets, shells, and engulfing mud to become such alegend that when he died at Mottistone in 1941 the Daily Express carried theheadline “The Horse The Germans Couldn’t Kill.”

Jack Seely had bought Cinderella on a “love at first sight” impulse at the Hampshire Yeomanry Camp on Salisbury Plain in August1902. She became sucha family pet that my mother remembers sliding off her tail. Warrior could be friendly enough but it was his courage, first shown when standing in front of breaking waves on Brook beach, that carried him through the ordeals of war.

He was a medium sized bay thoroughbred foaled by my grandfather Jack Seely’s mare Cinderella and sired by a chestnut stallion called Straybit who won the Lightweight Race at the Isle of Wight point to point in 1909, something that Warrior would do some 13 years later.

He was to be tested from the very beginning. For just 19 days after he and Grandpa landed in France on the 11 th August 1914 they were having their initiation under fire by some blazing stables at Danmartin.

“As we approached them” my grandfather wrote, “another bouquet of shells fell and burst, the nearest only a few

yards away. To my amazement Warrior made no attempt to run away. I could feel him tremble a little between my legs as we trotted through the gate but he pretended to be quite unperturbed. He was trying to be brave and succeeding in his task.

On many, many days thereafter in the four years that were to follow, I rode Warrior in shell fire – sometimes so heavy that he was almost the only survivor – but never once did he attempt to bolt of do any of the things which might be expected of an animal reputed to be so naturally timid as the horse. No, my stout hearted friend not only kept his own fear under control but by his examplehelped beyond measure his rider and his friend to do the same.”

Those words can now be read on the plinth of the mounted statue of Warrior and Jack Seely that was unveiled in the courtyard of Carisbrooke Castle in July 2014.

In that same year Warrior was awarded the Animals’ VC, the PDSA Dickin Medal on behalf of all the animals who served in World War One. It was not undeserved.

Over the next four years Warrior was at Ypres, The Somme, Passchendale, Cambrai, St Quentin and on the 30 th March 1918 led a 1,000 horse cavalry charge to check the German advance. His was the ultimate example of simple loyal, unswerving courage.

When Warrior finally died in 1941, he had an obituary in the Times. There was also this entry in my grandfather’s diary. “I do not believe that he will be denied in heaven the soul he had on earth.”

IW PONY CARRIAGE DRIVING The Isle of Wight Pony Club is 80 years old, but their mounted games demo team range from 11-17. The Pony Club is all about learning to care for and ride the ponies in a supportive and fun environment and nothing is quite as much fun as mounted games !

The aim of the group is to allow people with disabilities to enjoy the pleasure of driving a horse and carriage.

They achieve this by allowing people with a wide range if disabilities to enjoy a physical activity, safely and in good company, in the great outdoors.

William Cavendish Duke of Newcastle is regarded as one of the five great riding masters of all time. His methods and training have been widely used for centuries.

His work in manage has a direct influence on modern dressage practice focusing on high school movements as well as two time canter moves; the classical repertoire is much wider than many riders are aware of. He built a riding house at Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire which is still used today, with weekly displays of classical Cavalier horsemanship.

MUSIC ON THE WEST LAWN EACH DAY 1000 - 1300 Cat Skellington 1330 - 1530 The Grimshaws The Grimshaws are an acoustic family folk roots, blues and jazz trio specialising in classic songs and tunes.

Their eclectic sound ranges from Billie Holiday to stomping good-time mountain music, Irish laments right through to Hawaiian tangos!

In this section we focus on a small selection of local creative talent, including Isle of Wight Glass who made the trophies for this event.

GLASS

Isle of Wight Studio Glass was asked to make the trophies for the Osborne Horse Trials.

Founded in 1973 by celebrated glass designer Michael Harris, the studio has become one of the island’s best visitor attractions. It is now run by Michael’s son Timothy Harris, recognised internationally as a leading designer and maker of studio glass. Timothy’s studio pieces are found in the private collections, galleries and museums around the world. In 2012 Timothy was commissioned by the people of the Isle of Wight to make a glass bowl to be presented to HM The Queen during Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee visit, and which eventually became part of the Royal Collection. A replica of this splendid bowl, inspired by the sea and coastlines of the Isle of Wight, is on display in the Studio Shop at Arreton. The studio is open seven days per week and a visit provides an opportunity to watch a master craftsman and his team at work.

POTTERY Neil Tregear, founder of Tregear Pottery in Niton, trained in porcelain throwing in Kyoto, Japan.

Neil’s passion for pottery has seen his work travel across the globe but he also teaches so you can create your very own masterpieces, whether you are a complete novice or a budding potter. PRINTS The Isle of Wight has been Sue Stitt’s home for the past 20 years and, as a keen sailor, she has participated in numerous yachting regattas which have inspired her nautical scenes.

Advances in the digital world have transformed the way she approaches art and her current work showcases the result of much research on how to use vector apps on the iPad to create digital images.

Her striking and colourful images are Giclee printed locally on Archival Matt, 315gsm, 100% cotton rag which captures the clarity and brightness she strives for and, importantly, this method produces a picture that has excellent longevity. CONTEMPORARY ART Joanne Hummel-Newell combines collage, painting and installation.

Hailed as ‘The next generation to turn its back on Emin and Hirst’s conceptual artworks’ by the Observer, she has exhibited widely, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and has a growing international collector base.

Jo works from her home studio near Seaview. “I walk most days along the coastline near my studio and document the changing horizon. I’m interested in how natural environments affect the psychology of human beings and the rituals we invent in order to interact with the natural world”.

Her current work is informed by the natural world as well as tidal, gravitational, seasonal and chronological forces. “Colours are taken from the local landscape, with its pastel buildings, boating paraphernalia and bleached signage.” Jo sells limited edition prints and originals from her website and welcomes studio visits by appointment. www.joannehummelnewell.com

FOOD Ben Cooke and his wife Holly run The Little Gloster, a restaurant by the sea with rooms, in Gurnard Marsh.

Ben trained with classical chefs from New Zealand to Sweden and his philosophy is to let flavours speak for themselves and keep things simple - a skill picked up from his Danish grandmother.

Having spent time cooking on some of the best superyachts around the world, he has now come home and turned his childhood dream into reality with Holly; together they have won both awards and loyal customers. www.thelittlegloster.com

MUSIC Local singer songwriter Holly Kirby is a regular performer at festivals and venues on the Isle of Wight and even supported Joan Armatrading on tour at Shanklin Theatre.

She also wrote and played the music for the Island’s most recent ITV commercial.

This year she has formed a new band, Holly Kirby and the Great Outdoors, with some of the island’s most talented musicians. A big hearted folk style quintet, they have just performed their first live show at the Rhythmtree Festival in Calbourne. www.hollykirbymusic.com

Northwood House in Cowes is hosting Wight Proms this summer. There is an exciting selection of free arts workshops on the Thursday and Friday but you need to apply for the public ballot by the end of July (see their website).

This will give over 200 people fully-immersive participation in ways that they would not otherwise experience.

Through these workshops, 60 children will perform as part of the show ‘Wight at the Musicals’ on the Saturday night.

An exhibition will showcase some of the island’s finest artists, and include competition winners to find new artists of all ages across the island and beyond. Some of these artists will be present, so you can both discuss and buy their work! Independent Arts, an associated charity, will have a presence throughout the festival.

The Event Organisers, named in this programme, undertakes to run the competition in accordance with the British Eventing rules and guidance.

The Event Organisers are required to ensure that all Stewards appointed by the Organisers have received, read and understood the relevant section of the guidance to ensure that they are aware of the requirements and standards for their area of responsibility.

The Health and Safety Steward (primarily) and the Organiser are required to ensure the area of competition and those accessible to the public and other officials are (so far as reasonably practicable) subject to risk assessment and that this, and a record of the actions taken, is documented in the event’s Health and Safety plan.

Officials Stewards, judges and other officials are briefed in their duties and provided with the relevant equipment to carry out their duties.

They are required to bring to the attention of the Health and Safety Steward any concerns they have for the health, safety and welfare of the public and the officials. Spectators are so far as reasonably practicable: Encouraged to purchase a programme which contains a map showing the different parts of the event site and the relevant viewing locations.

All attendees are reminded to supervise and control their children.

Exhibitors (Trade Stands) All exhibitors are responsible for the safety of their own stands and the risks that they may pose to other persons within the allocated space or immediate surrounding areas. This is subject to the monitoring by the Health and Safety Steward and Organiser.

Emergencies The emergency services at the event include doctors, ambulance, vets and fence repair personnel. They have access to all parts of the event and can be quickly contacted through any steward, judge or official-most immediately through the issue of a personal radio.

Accidents involving horses and competitors are well catered for and the appropriate officials are constantly ready to report these as they occur and to call for appropriate emergency services.

Emergencies not connected with the competition (eg in the catering tent) may be dealt with by the emergency services on site but outside emergency services (eg, the fire brigade) may be needed too. Telephones for such emergency calls are located at the Event Office.

Liability Save for the death or personal injury caused by the negligence of the organisers or anyone for whom they are in law responsible, neither the organisers of any event to which these rules apply, nor any agent, employee or representative of these bodies accepts and liability for any accident, loss, damage, injury or illness to horses, owners, riders, spectators, land, cars, their contents and accessories or any other person or property whatsoever, whether caused by the negligence, breach of contract or in any way whatsoever.

Hovertravel

TICKET TO RYDE

Hovertravel is the world’s longest running commercial hovercraft service and the only scheduled hovercraft passenger service in Europe. It is the fastest way to cross the Solent and runs between between Southsea and Ryde. Hovertravel operate two hovercraft with a journey time of just under 10 minutes.

The hovercraft is a tourist attraction in its own right. Hovertravel was established in 1965 and over 29 million passengers have travelled on the service. The advantage of hovercraft is that they can travel at extremely low tides across the sand. If it hadn’t been for the tides, Hovertravel might never have existed. The low tides at Ryde Sands take the sea out far beyond the town’s esplanade. Until 1965, the only passenger ferries from Portsmouth stopped at the end of Ryde’s long Victorian pier.

The hovercraft has a well-established history on the Isle of Wight, with the very first craft (invented by Sir Christopher Cockerell) being manufactured in East Cowes during the 1950s by Saunders-Roe. www.hovertravel.co.uk

Do you need a hand to find what you are looking for or to have a better understanding about today’s competition?

Our friendly volunteer ambassadors are on hand to help you; look out for the ‘horsey’ yellow tabards.

They will be able to direct you to the various areas of the Osborne grounds and help you to understand the different aspects of the horse trials.

For example you may be wondering what a dressage test is or whether the same rider has to ride the same horse for the dressage, show jumping and cross-country course or you might not understand how the scoring works. Ask a volunteer!

Maybe you have brought a picnic? Our ambassadors will be able to suggest the best place to enjoy your lunch with a lovely view of the cross-country course.

Osborne House also has its own team of volunteer guides and we hope you find time to explore this wonderful royal home.
