01/build a life

URA, HKSAR

e-magazine design

Urban Renewal Authority (URA) is a statutory body that undertakes, encourages, promotes and facilitates urban renewal in Hong Kong. << 建人建事 >> is an online monthly magazine for internal staff to share news and articles in all ways - it can be some inspiring suggestions for current projects or just a travel journal of a staff. The design is in a relaxing and casual tone which aims to encourage the ‘sharing culture’ among staff. The magazine has a consistent style and structure so articles and photos can be easily replaced monthly.

‘Conversation’ is the main element of the magazine design. The shape of the magazine logo took reference from the two buildings on the original URA logo, and changed into two conversation bubbles to represent the communication between staff. Sections are differentiated by bright colours, which will be used in every magazine. The cover photo changes according to the content of the chairman’s message. Graphic elements are mainly related to buildings and some office essentials that can be easily found in the office, to create a familiar and friendly tone for the staff.

e-news design

BEAM Society Limited is a public body, that is committed to implementing B-E-A-M assessment tool, to assess the quality of buildings. BEAM green building aims at sustainability, providing a more comfortable and efficient living and working environment. The design includes a set of materials promoting the concept of BEAM to the public, which includes leaflets, exhibition display boards, games, etc. The materials show how BEAM works and facilitate green concepts.

The theme of the promotion material is ‘connection’. Green buildings and green power facilities are built on ‘islands’, they are all connected and formed into a green BEAM society. The connections are functioned as the grid in dividing information into different parts for easier reading. To match the green concept, all display boards are made from honeycomb boards, which can be recycled after the exhibition. To attract visitors to exhibitions, games are created. Take the game in 2018 as an example, it is a gashapon machine hidden inside a building-shaped model, questions are put in capsules for kids to answer and win prizes. The size of the game is designed to be portable for easy delivery from Hong Kong to the Macau exhibition centre. Games are displayed in eye-catching and interesting ways to encourage people to participate.

SIG, HKBU

website design

Staff Interest Group provides 11 types of groups for HKBU staff to join. They are designed to engage staff with common interests to further their interest in different types of activities. Through participation, staff can get new inspiration, meet new people, and strengthen their connection networks. Eventually, it creates a positive working environment in HKBU. The new SIG website has two aims. First, provide a new platform for HKBU staff to search and apply for interest events. Second, re-design easy procedures for SIG internal staff to update and organize events.

Colourful splash with mixed colours is used as the main element to create fun and joyful image of SIG, and it also symbolizes the new inspiring connection network between staff. The website is designed to give a personal experience for each staff. New members are invited to fill in an online form and choose one or more interested groups. News and photos of their interested groups will then be prioritized and shown first whenever they enter the website. For internal use, SIG staff can upload posters, photos, and text easily using the back-end system. They can also collect and download required information of event participants, for further event arrangement.

Hong Kong Baptist UniversityJockey Club Chinese Medicine Disease Prevention and Health

Management Centre is a new Chinese Medicine centre in Hong Kong, which promotes health in a brand new concept to the public. The centre adopts three fundamental theories of health management - prevention of diseases when there is none, speeding up recovery when the disease is minor, and preventing chronic disease progression. The centre brochure aims to introduce the centre, its statements and services to the public.

The state of human health is constantly evolving - people who enjoy good health, in the beginning, will succumb to subhealth conditions and finally to diseases. To be simple, it is a loop. The cover of the brochure shows a graphic of a Chinese knot. Three looping circles show the three main fundamental concepts of the centre. In Chinese culture, a knot always brings luck and good wishes - the knot here symbolizes the wish to bring good health and happiness to the public. In Chinese culture, we believe there is a great connection between nature and humans. It is important to keep the balance and harmony in between. Circles are used as the main shape element within the whole brochure. Natural objects with circle shapes or patterns are used to connect different sections.

HKBU School of Chinese

Medicine received a grant from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to establish the 'Chinese Medicine Disease Prevention and Health Management Centre' in September 2018. For the grand opening, the client requests for an event management project, starting from site design to event rundown planning, from background animation design to gimmick design. The style of the whole event design is classic, formal and grand.

The golden sparkling backdrop was designed to match the soft yellow interior design of the centre. An LED display TV wall was set, so that the image on the screen could be flexibly changed from event title to video and animation in specific timing. A grand twostep gimmick was required for Foundation members and government officers to kick off the project. Three guests were invited to pour the pearls into the station, the logo showed and it symbolized the start of the 'Embrace Health' Chinese Medicine program. More guests were then invited to pull the bar, and this symbolized the opening of the centre. The station was made with foamboard, pipes, and iron branches. Planning, prototyping, and testing were done carefully, to make sure the process could run smoothly.

07/summer time

Citywalk

booth design site design poster design props design

Citywalk held a summer food festival in July 2017. The festival includes several activities, which include $1 sales, games sections, cooking shows, competitions, etc. The client hopes to create a joyful summer feeling to attract visitors to join the key activities, eventually boosting sales of the shops in the shopping mall.

Sun, sea, and beach are the main elements of the decoration theme. Since this is a public event for all ages, it is very important to arrange the information in a way that is easy for people to understand. Only key text and information are listed and text arrangements are designed at different levels to lead the reading flow. For the photo shooting section, product arrangement, art direction, and time management are included in this project.

08/re: re refresh

re:fresh branding logo design card design booth design promotion

re:fresh is a brand selling traditional paper greeting cards. People nowadays spend most of their time using mobile devices, sometimes they forget to stop for a while and spend time with their loved ones. The founder of re:fresh believes that the tradition of 'writing by our own hands' should be reminded. A small greeting card with warm handwriting text can have a great impact on receivers.

re:fresh 回瞬

The name of the brand re:fresh (' 回瞬 ' in chinese) comes with two meanings. There is a sentence in a Chinese poem- ' 人生若只如 若見 ', which means the relationship is always nice and sweet in the beginning. It is important to review and refresh our memories and keep them as fresh as the moment we meet. The second meaning comes from the word 're:' ( 回 ), which means to respond. Relationships should be in two-way communication.

The logo is drawn from a continuous line in the shape of 'paper'. It also forms the shape of Chinese word ' 回 ', which graphically can be viewed as two spaces - 'past' and 'now'. The triangle shape in the bottom right can be viewed as the corner of a piece of paper, or an arrow pointing from the outer square (now) to the inner square (past), which encourages people to re:fresh their relationships.

The design of the cards varies, they can be used at all times of the year. The graphic comes up with interesting quotes, which makes readers smile. The project starts with just a small concept and the brand eventually expands after branding design and promotion, cards are sold in booths and consignment stores, as well as on Instagram. Different paper textures, card forms, and envelopes are used to design for diverse use in celebrating different festivals and meaningful moments.
