SEEING A DOUBLE RAINBOW Venice Signs Spark Colorful Debate Venice Pride, Venice Chamber of Commerce feud over Pride Month signs.

By Sam Catanzaro and Amy Patton

Marking the 50th-anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, attendees of the annual Venice Pride Sign Lighting & Block Party at Windward Circle danced in the street last Saturday under two rainbows that are at the center of a debate between Venice Pride and the Venice Chamber of Commerce. For the past three years, the Venice Chamber of Commerce and Venice Pride, a non-profit that promotes and protects LGBTQ interests in Venice Beach, have collaborated to put on

the sign lighting and block party to kick off Pride Month with the Venice sign changing to rainbow colors. On February 22, 2019, however, the Venice Chamber of Commerce canceled Venice Pride's chamber membership. In addition, the Venice Sign Trademark License Agreement granted to Venice Pride on April 1, 2017 was revoked, meaning Venice Pride is no longer able to sell apparel such as shirts with Venice Sign branding. In March, the chamber announced that they would be taking down the Venice Sign in June during Pride Month for unrelated maintenance. On May 21, Venice Pride Board President Grant Turck said that Venice Pride had commissioned and would install a rainbow Venice sign of their own over Windward Avenue for 24 hours for the Venice Pride Sign Lighting

Venice, LA Homelessness Increases Veterans, transgender individuals and transition age youth see stark jumps in homelessness levels. By Sam Catanzaro The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) has released the results of the 2019 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, which showed 36,300 people experiencing homelessness, a 16 percent rise from last year. In Council District 11, which includes Venice, homelessness increased by 12 percent overall and even more so among certain groups, including transition age youth and transgender individuals. “The homelessness crisis in Los Angeles is getting worse, After several declarations of emergency, the development of comprehensive strategies, voter approval of taxes to address homelessness, and the launch of new programs, how the hell is that possible?” said Councilmember Mike Bonin. “People are becoming homeless faster than we can house them. The pathways into homelessness are big, and varied, and

fast-moving. The pathways out of homelessness are few, narrow, and clogged, and maddeningly slow.” The number of individuals experiencing homelessness in District 11 in 2019 is 2,284, a 16 percent increase from 2018. According to the count, 97 percent of these individuals are unsheltered. Areas in which the district saw stark increases include homelessness among transition age youth between the ages 18-24 seeing a 50 percent increase (17 percent citywide), veterans a 47 percent increase (8 percent citywide) and transgender individuals a 248 percent increase (18 percent citywide). In addition, the count showed that in Council District 11, 55 percent of individuals experiencing homelessness over the age of 18 reported domestic violence or intimate partner violence, compared to 39 percent citywide. In the district, this represents 1,182 individuals, a 63 percent increase from 2018. One area in which Council District 11 saw a decrease in homelessness was among individuals with a substance use disorder, in which a 2 percent decrease was reported, compared to a 3 percent increase citywide. LAHSA announced the results of the count as city leaders continue to put millions of dollars into efforts to combat homelessness, but as the numbers suggest, more

needs to be done. “We housed more than 21,000 people last year, and LA’s increase is half the statewide average of 32 percent—thanks in large part to the vision and courage that Angelenos showed in passing Prop. HHH and Measure H,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “While we did better, it’s not good enough. That’s why we’re putting more resources than ever into meeting the urgency of the moment.

In Council District 11, three bridge housing shelters are in the works that lawmakers hope will put a dent in the crisis. Last month, Bonin announced that a 154bed bridge housing center at the old MTA bus yard on Main Street will open at some point this summer. In addition, a nearly 100-bed bridge housing center for veterans

Popular and beloved Venice based photographer Cole Younger has passed away, leaving behind a breadth of work defined by the city he loved. Younger’s career as a photographer began with an iPhone 4 and evolved into a visually stunning art form that gained the respect of his peers. News of his passing came as a shock to his nearly 290,000 Instagram followers who quickly took to social media to express their deep sympathy. S. Cole Kiburz wrote, “I’m glad I got to meet you and tell you I’ve admired your work for years. You were a genuine and kind person, and you will be sorely missed by myself and the community. Thanks for all the inspiration and passion you brought to your work. Rest easy bro.” Xander Sabo wrote, “Cole Younger, a gentle

soul and brilliant artist!! I could always sense his genuine love for people and compassion for the downtrodden! You were and will always be an inspiration, my friend. RIP!” David Allan Joyce wrote, “This is insane, can’t believe you’re gone! You had such a massive impact on me and your community. You’ll be missed.” Known for his ability to capture some of the city’s most iconic vistas, Younger also developed a loyal following for his work with Snoop Dogg, Adidas, and captivating images of the city’s homeless population. While cause of death has not been made public, many of Younger’s followers were aware of his issues with drug abuse and depression. Younger’s undeniable talent transcended his struggles and served to inspire the community around him.

Venice High Among Top Schools in US Will Housing Become A New North Vs. South Issue?

U.S. News & World Report releases annual report.

Venice High School is officially among the best high schools in America. According to the 2019 U.S. News Best High Schools ranking, Venice High placed 253rd among California high schools and 1666th in the nation. The U.S. News & World Report, widely accepted as the standard for education rankings, used six main factors to determine where schools place in the country: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates. Previous rankings involved a 4- step process, followed by the final step, college readiness, as the sole basis to determine ranking value. More schools than ever have been included in the 2019 national report; 17,245 in total compared to 14,646 in 2018. According to Anita Narayan, Managing Editor of Education at U.S News, “Our mission with the Best High Schools rankings has always been to educate families about the schools in their district. By evaluating more schools than ever before, the new edition expands that focus so all communities can see which schools in

There is little doubt the “Beat LA” cry often heard when Southern California sports teams play in other parts of America originated in the San Francisco Bay area, probably during a Dodgers-Giants series in September 1982, when a playoff berth was at stake. While Los Angeles and the Bay area usually agree politically, new rivalries have arisen in recent years, as the Los Angeles Rams take on the San Francisco 49ers twice a year in professional football and the Golden State Warriors have replaced the Los Angeles Lakers as the world’s premier professional basketball team. Now the longtime north-south animosity shows signs of bleeding over into politics.

Summer 2019 – Time to Get on It! By Guy Camilleri

If you are in Venice, you may be reading this under grey skies, a cool breeze swaying the palm trees and maybe just a hint of sunshine peeking through the clouds. The start of summer in Southern California wouldn’t be summer without some June gloom upon us, right? And yet, summer in Venice Beach is a thing to behold! Think about it, a sunrise before 6 a.m., a sunset after 8 p.m… more than 14 hours of daylight to revel in and soak up. This very fact is one of the reasons we live here in California, not to mention how fortunate we are to live in Venice Beach! So, what will you do with your days this summer? Will you start a new exercise routine, or maybe just change up the time of your routine? Perhaps a 7 a.m. Yoga class in place of your usual 9 a.m. class, followed by a walk on the beach, and then before you know it, you are done by 9 a.m. with 11 hours of light left to bask in. Or maybe, right after work, you will head to the tennis courts, or play paddle tennis on the newly renovated beachside courts, or go for a golden hour surf, walk or jog on the beach. Or, if you are hungry, why not tailgate with friends and some Keto inspired food (if that’s your thing) or In-n-Out burgers (that’s a thing too, you know). What will make this summer stand out from last summer? With the added hours of sunlight, there is an opportunity to carve out time for YOURSELF and notice what it feels like to have these added hours of light to your day. One way to go about this is to plug in a simple meditation program into your day, or as I like to say: NOTICE MORE, THINK LESS. A few moments of noticing more (including the meaning the mind is making about your noticing) has a short-term and longterm benefit built into it. With practice, you will begin to experience a new-found sense of clarity, joy and maybe even a sense of ease about life and the mind’s interpretation of what you should or shouldn’t be doing with your life! Not to mention, that meditating allows for a more profound sense of belonging to the world and gives you permission to get in touch with what you want back from the world. You can’t get it if you don’t ask for it, right? But, even though noticing is free and you

The Luxury Brand of Pleasant Holidays

find yourself dialed into a moment, you might notice that your mind will still find a way to make some kind of meaning out of what you see and feel. This meaning that the brain makes along with what you notice is another opportunity to decipher what is worth using and discard what sounds like chatter. “If it sounds like chatter in the mind, more than likely it is chatter in the mind.” To keep it light this summer, here are three things notice. These are especially helpful when you aren’t sure whether to react or respond to the moment you are in. 1. What is happening outside of you. 2. The sensations you notice in your body. 3. The thoughts going through your mind. Guy Camilleri is a Venice-based actor, acting-life coach, and screenwriter in Venice Beach, CA. GET YOUR GLOW ON – at the Venice Electric Light Parade –

Weekly community ride to promote bike safety. By Keldine Hull Get on your bikes and ride! The Venice Electric Light Parade, founded by Kansas City native Marcus Gladney, is a weekly community event that cultivates community through biking and encourages bike safety. The parade begins at 4:15 p.m. every Sunday at Windward Plaza on the Boardwalk. With safety lights and wheel lights in tow, bikers from every walk of life can pedal the night away throughout the streets of Venice. According to Gladney, “There’s bikes, lights, music and lots of love. I started doing the parade in November of 2015, after meeting Sebastian the ‘Light Man’ of Venice. I witnessed him selling his LED bike wheel lights to everyone from celebrities to locals, and that’s when I got the idea to organize an event to showcase the lights and to promote bike safety for bicyclists at night.” Clad in colorful costumes with lights ga-

Going Bak in Time with a Photographer By Melanie C amp

Spying a thirteen-year-old Sunny Bak, amongst a crowd of New York paparazzi, Elizabeth Taylor showed concern that the young photographer was up so late past bedtime. But, that’s what you get when the school of life sees you interning with a gang of wisened paps. Bak said of Taylor, “We were all following her around. She would get back to her hotel at two a.m. each night. One night she looked at me and said ‘Aren't you a little young to be out so late?’ I said to her, ‘well if you didn’t stay out so late I wouldn’t have to be up so late.’” The next night, Taylor returned to her hotel before midnight. The photographer and now, Venice Art Crawl President, said she started running with the paparazzi simply because it gave her a chance to take photos. “I never knew who we were photographing.” Explaining how she would run with the pack and snap whoever appeared the target. Many of her pictures remained undeveloped. “I fell in love with the magic of photography, maybe when I was five? My dad brought me to a dark room, and I saw pictures magically appear in the water, and it was like, ‘Woah!’ It blew my mind,” said Bak. Working as a journalist in New York, Bak’s father gifted the would be photographer her first camera, a Nikon Rangefinder. At 18, Bak rented her first studio where she focused on fashion photography. “My days shooting with the paparazzi taught me to get in-focus shots fast, and people appreciated how quick I could get the studio shots they needed.” Using stand-ins also helped Bak streamline shoots. ing some local guys who went to become the Beastie Boys. It was, “the end of The Young and the Useless, which was their punk rock band and they were just starting to be the Beastie Boys, and they were playing around locally and stuff.” Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz were regulars at the studio, “I used to wonder why they were hanging out so much then I worked it out, the models,” said Bak. While waiting for talent to arrive, Bak would put the fellas to work and have them stand on set she positioned the lights. She has many prints of Diamond, Yauch, and Horovitz hamming for the camera. All this was long before “License to Ill,” the album for which Bak snapped the picture on the gatefold. The group shot the video for their song “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)” at Bak’s studio. “The video was made at my studio, and my photos are all over it,” said Bak. In fact, the band spent so much time in her studio, its location is marked on a map in the Beastie Boys Book released last year. Bak’s photos are the stuff of legend. A rockstar here, movie star there, and one of the ten best selling Newsweek covers, ever. For this shoot, Bak captured Catherine Angiel and her then-girlfriend Ashley Herrin in her arms. The headline read, “Lesbians.” Bak said labels were never something she or her friends subscribed to living and loving in New York in the ‘80s. She describes the time as a sexually liberated period where people were not gay or bisexual but more so, “just sexual. It just, sort of, was fluid. Whatever happened, happened.” A surge of creativity electrified the city and Bak’s life, from the late ’70s to mid‘80s. “It was a very creative time, and there was a lot of freedom and experimentation. It was an exciting time because anything

went and everything did,” said Bak who at this point hadn’t considered labeling her sexuality. The outbreak of AIDs shuttered free love and saw a new wave of homophobia flood the mid-’80s. “There was no AIDS until it happened in ’85/’86 and then guys were dying like crazy, and it was head spinning,” said Bak explaining how AIDS attached a new stigma to being gay. Before that “I just feel like it was sorta great and creative and wild and…free.” Today she lives in Venice, California with her partner, Director Gina Rubenstein. Bak refers to herself as “a gay woman.”

Elizabeth Taylor once questioned Bak on being up so late. The photographer started her career running with the paparazzi in New York aged 13.

However, there is a hesitation to go there. Not out of shame, but more so out of reluctance to cow-tow to society’s need to label and, a nod to a more creative and accepting time. Bak’s life traces through a collage of pictures that document the experiences and adventure of love, people, and places from the mid-‘70s to today. She said, she is still discovering swaths of undeveloped film from her paparazzi days. “I’ll develop the film and be like, ‘oh look, it’s Andy Warhol.’ Or, ‘Ha! That was the night Ad-Rock and I were out late getting ketchup in a bodega.’” Fleeting, real moments with the famous, captured forever and for Bak, this is yet another example of how photography can be magic. Listen to an exclusive Beautiful Hollywood podcast with Sunny Bak on Anchor FM find it at anchor.fm/beautiful-hollywood. On July 13, the Venice Art Crawl and Mar Vista Art Walk are joining forces to create GetAround, an art event that runs from the 405 to the beach along Venice Boulevard. There will be shuttles but anyone heading to the event are encouraged to bike, scoot, or ride-share.

PRIDE,

from page 1 & Block Party. On May 30, however, the Venice Chamber of Commerce announced they would, in fact, light up the Venice Sign in rainbow hues for Pride Month despite previously saying the sign would be down for maintenance. Therefore, on Saturday, June 4, attendees of the Venice Pride Sign Lighting & Block Party were greeted by two signs: a double rainbow. In a statement provided to Yo! Venice, the Venice Chamber of Commerce said that Venice Pride's installation of a sign for 24 hours "demeans" the Venice Sign. "Manufacturing a replica of the trademark-protected Venice Sign is a direct affront to the Venice community as it has the potential to cause the Venice Sign to suffer the same fate as the one originally installed

by Abbot Kinney back in 1905. To protect this beloved community asset, the Venice Chamber hopes that the Venice Pride organization will, in the coming years, redirect their efforts to create a unique and original concept for their celebrations. The Chamber is concerned about any unauthorized use because of the potential it has to demean a community treasure that we hope will be enjoyed by generations to come," the Chamber said. "Part of the obligation of protecting the trademarks is that we are bound to address infringements. If we do not follow up on unauthorized usage, it places our trademarks in jeopardy. This can ultimately cause us to lose the ability to take care of the sign on behalf of Venice." In response to this, Venice Pride told Yo! Venice that the sign they installed for the sign lighting and block party was an "original" design. "Following notice in March that the

“VENICE” sign would be taken down for the month of June due to unrelated maintenance, Venice Pride designed and commissioned an original sign based on the free ‘Gilbert’ font under a Creative Commons License. Inspired by the design language of the iconic Rainbow Flag created by Gilbert Baker, the mobile sign spanned Windward Ave for just twenty four hours," Venice Pride said in a statement.

According to Venice Pride, more than 2,000 people attended the sign lighting and block party, the largest event to date according to Venice Pride. Notable attendees included Stonewall survivor Everett C. Alexander, DJ Victor Rodriguez, Los Angeles Rams Cheerleaders Quinton and Sammy, non-binary Drag Queen Posse, Restauranteur Daniel Samakow and out LAPD Captains Shannon Paulson and Peter J. Casey.

HOUSING, from page 4

Northern California politicians are avidly pushing supposed solutions to the state’s acknowledged housing crisis against the wishes of many Southern California cities. A Democratic San Francisco state senator, Scott Wiener, is behind SB 50, a legislative proposal aiming to radically change the face of much of Southern California by forcing cities and counties to allow unlimited dense high-rise buildings within a quarter-mile of major transit routes and even farther away from light rail stations. It was likely no coincidence that a Southern California state senator, Democrat Antho-

ny Portantino of La Canada-Flintridge, using his authority as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, stalled the bill at least until next year. Meanwhile, a Berkeley state senator sponsors legislation that would block regions with high real estate prices from imposing new limits on housing construction or decreasing the number of homes allowed in many places where zoning now permits new building. That bill, by Democrat Nancy Skinner, is known as SB 330 and would be effective for 10 years. These potential laws could change the face and lifestyle of Southern California far more than points north because cities like San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland are already far denser than most of the south state. Plus, the vast majority of sub-600,000 population counties – exempt from SB 50 – are in Northern California. The Bay area also features a more comprehensive mass rail transit system than Southern California, whose Red Line streetcar network of the early 20th Century was bought up and dismantled by a combination of auto, gasoline and tire companies during the late 1940s and 1950s. Los Angeles and other parts of Southern California are now staging a multi-billion-dollar mass transit comeback, adding one light rail line after another, but these still fall far short of a comprehensive network. That leaves Southern California more dependent on cars than the Bay area. Wiener’s bill assumes that dense building near transit lines will see new residents abandon their

cars for public transit. But the transit system in Los Angeles and environs is not nearly wide-ranging enough to allow this. It’s nothing like New York, London, Moscow or Paris, where subways and elevated lines reach within a few blocks of almost anywhere. Similarly, the Skinner plan would force local governments in high-priced cities to allow new construction without much new parking, another anti-automobile tactic. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s simultaneous push for cities to allow large numbers of new “affordable” housing units has similar flaws. The assumption that residents of smallish new apartments would gladly abandon their individual, independent transportation does not jibe with reality. Statistics show new light rail routes take few cars off Southern California streets and highways. The less sprawling nature of current development in Northern California guarantees the biggest impacts of all these housing initiatives would come in the south, where neither Wiener nor Skinner has spent much time. Essentially, Northern California politicians are saying their untested ideas should trump what elected officials in the south state know about their cities and counties. They want to nullify zoning laws shaping growth and development in places they don’t know very well. If they prevail – and they eventually might, given massive majorities of ultra-liberal Democrats in both houses of the Legislature – two likely results would be even more gridlock and more competition for parking in the most congested parts of California. experiencing homelessness will also open this summer at the West Los Angeles VA, according to Bonin. Across the street at the West Los Angeles National Guard Armory, plans have been submitted to the federal government to build a bridge housing center there for non-veteran homeless individuals in the area. While these shelters are expected to make a dent in the number of individuals experiencing homelessness, city officials say to resolve the crisis fully they will have to address root causes, including the cost of living in Los Angeles. According to a report released last week by Apartment List, the median rent of two-bedroom apartments in Los Angeles increased by 0.7 percent over the past year with four months of consecutive increases. Median rent prices in Los Angeles continue to be less affordable than comparable cities nationwide – Los Angeles’ median two-bedroom rent of $1,750 is above the national average of $1,190. To combat the increased cost to rent in Los Angeles, Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz who represents parts of West LA is calling on the City to increase funding for programs aimed at protecting tenants from getting unfairly evicted. “Too many people are being evicted from their rental units because they can’t navigate the complex legal maze of eviction (landlord-tenant) law, and we want this program to grow into one that benefits tenants and landlords alike by keeping cases out of court and combats homelessness by keeping tenants in their homes,” Koretz said. “Eviction prevention is one of the most cost-effective ways to stem the flow of low-income families and seniors into homelessness. And I daresay we’ll be looking to add funding to grow this program sooner rather than later so we can help more tenants.”

STAR GAZING

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Aries today is advised to be energetic. Act, and do not stand still. This advice applies to your behavior at work and everything that you take to the evening. Arrange a noisy party for your entire family, not forgetting to single out the younger relatives. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Today will bring Taurus light sadness. You will meet the summer in this mood only because the person you are dreaming of capturing will still not want to go on a date. Well, you are free to knock on this closed door, wasting precious time and energy. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Gemini today is destined to complete a project with great success. Dwelling on the task took away a lot of your strength and made you pretty worried. The events of this Friday will confirm that you were worried unnecessarily. Your boss will appreciate this. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers should not put anyone on the run. Yes, you will be able to neutralize your main competitor for a while, but your conscience will not forgive you for this act. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos today will tend to treat life very calmly. It cannot be said that today your life will be completely devoid of turmoil. This will happen from time to time, but you do not need to pay much attention to it. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Today will bring Virgo a feeling of ease. You will most of all rejoice over the fact that the workweek event has finally ended. In the evening you will go carelessly “hang out” with your best friend or girlfriend. The evening will fly by like one brief moment. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libra spends today lost in the whirlwind of their own thoughts. You will reflect on what your personal life should be like, and whether there is a place for a particular person in it. Think with your heart, without taking into account everything that logic tells you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpios today need help to save themselves from a negative mood. One of your close family members will spoil it, and you will spend the whole day mentally indignant about the situation. That’s why you will be delighted by a phone call in which one of your friends will invite you to a party. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarians today will be especially cheerful and sweet. This will be due to the phone call which will come to you very early in the morning. With this call your partner will inform you that they will arrive ahead of schedule from their long business trip. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns will be tired this day due to its extremely unpredictable character. You will be determined to finish a very complex project today, but the authorities will assign you to another task. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius today will persistently avoid a conversation with his second half. She will reproach you for the lack of romance and passionate intrigue within your couple. You decide that this is not really for you, since you are completely satisfied with the current state of the relationship.
