Chamber of Commerce Vs. Venice Pride Why the Chamber revoked Venice Pride’s membership and effectively canceled the Venice Pride Sign Lighting. By Amy Patton The Venice Chamber of Commerce released a statement in response to Venice Pride Board President Grant Turck’s request for the Chamber to “reverse course and to confirm its intention” in writing regarding the recent revocation of Venice Pride’s Chamber membership. In an open letter to the Venice Board of Chamber on March 13, Turck claims that the Board of unjustly revoked Venice Pride’s membership to the Chamber of Commerce on February 22. He also said that the Chamber’s decision to take the Venice sign down for “unrelated maintenance” during the month of June was “hateful and offensive” toward the LGBTQ community. “The Venice Chamber of Commerce is strongly in support of our LGBTQ members and the wider LGBTQ community and we always will be,” the Chamber said in the statement released last week. “We were saddened to learn of the accusations directed at the Chamber by Grant Turck and are therefore forced to clarify and respond.” The Chamber, the appointed custodian of the Venice Sign, said that the Sign Lighting event celebrating gay pride began with a request of Daniel Samakow in 2015, which took over a year to produce the premiere event. Since the event, Venice Pride was incorporated, and at the request of Samakow again, the Chamber allowed an outside organization to run the sign lighting event the next year, which was

an “unusual and risky” decision for the Chamber, according to the statement. The Pride lighting was done under a license on a year-by-year basis. The Chamber said that the primary assurance factor to enter into such an arrangement was “confidence in the oversight of Venice Pride Board of Directors.” However, the entire Board of Directors of Venice Pride has since resigned. The Chamber said in the statement that each Board member had various reasons to resign, “all concerning the actions and behavior of Grant Turck.” Furthermore, the Chamber said that during the two years of Venice Pride’s oversight of the event, there have been a number of direct violations of the agreement, citing the failure to contribute agreed-upon bulb sponsorship fees to the Sign maintenance fund as “most egregious.” The Chamber said that allowing Venice Pride to collect funds for bulb adoptions in order to assist in funding the Sign Lighting was unprecedented, and done as a concrete show of the Chamber’s support for the LGBTQ community. “The fact that the agreed percentage was never paid is unconscionable,” The Chamber said. It is with these reasons that the Chamber qualified its recent actions against Venice Pride. The statement said that the Chamber is working with the former Board members of Venice Pride to create a Pride Committee to help with the production of the sign lighting event in the future. “This will ensure transparency and accountability and that the event benefits the community

and helps maintain the Venice Sign as opposed to benefiting one person,” the Chamber said. However, Turck responded by stating that Venice Pride had, in fact, paid the agreed upon dues. “Venice Pride has always paid the Venice Chamber as agreed,” Turck said. “In 2018, the Chamber opted to pay Venice Pride $3,500 via a member of their executive committee as part of a larger sum to settle accounting errors allegedly made by Chamber leadership involving equipment billed to Venice Pride but used at a June 8 Chamber event. “The Chamber’s failure to keep its promise to

our community is a disappointment, but we have a backup sign already in the works.” The Chamber concluded its statement Monday by referencing the maintenance. schedule of the Venice Sign, explaining that it has been nearly 12 years since it had last been renovated. “While from the ground, it appears like no problems exist; we regularly maintain the Sign with an expert technician,” the Chamber said. “And after nearly 12 years there are a number of issues that are problematic and require repair and

Gray Whale Woes in SoCal Whales wash ashore in Malibu, tangles in Oxnard buoy. By Sam Catanzaro

Photo: Kyla Kelly.

On Sunday, March 24 a 40-foot long gray whale washed ashore in Malibu.

From San Diego and Los Angeles to Santa Barbara and San Franciso, major cities are commonplace along much of California's coast. Amid the hustle and bustle of these metropolises, it is easy to forget the nature that exists in many residents' backyards. This past weekend in Malibu, however, residents and beachgoers got a vi-

sual and olfactory reminder of their proximity to wildlife when a young dead gray whale washed ashore at County Line Beach, greeting beachgoers with the smell of decaying flesh. "It smelled foul," Cole Miller, a local actor who was surfing nearby, told Yo! Venice. "I had never seen a whale that close before, so I was in awe of how large it was compared to me. Other people poked at it, but I didn't want to. There was dried, dirty blood oozing from its eyes and mouth. It was pretty gross, but amazing to see a creature like that right in front of me." Authorities believe the carcass washed ashore around 3 a.m. Sunday, March 24. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the whale is

about 40-feet long, the size of a semi-truck. There are several gashes on the whale's side, though it is still unclear how the whale died. More details will become available after Diane Alps, President of the Channel Island Marine and Wildlife Institute and her colleagues release information from a necropsy performed March 25. According to the CHP, authorities do not plan on removing the carcass of the whale and will instead let nature take its course and carry the body out to sea. While experts were performing the necropsy on the 40-foot long mammal, rescue crews just up the coast in Oxnard spent Monday attempting to

Cracking Down on Illegal Pot Sales Los Angeles to shut down water and power to unlicenced dispensaries By Joe Fasbinder Smell that? That’s springtime on Venice Beach. Sunscreen, human sweat, cotton candy and the aroma of marijuana. Using pot on the Boardwalk is illegal. Think anyone cares? The City of Los Angeles cares. Even if nobody is going to come get you for noodling a little weed on Venice Beach, people who deal in cash money want to know where your reefer comes from. When it comes to the marijuana trade, you’ll notice that not very many people don’t want to tell you their full name. That’s probably excusable considering that you’re dealing with a product whose very possession was likely to bring personal dishonor, and maybe even a fine and a misdemeanor conviction, in the Bad Old Days. Chris at Green Goddess on Main Street just off the Venice Boardwalk keeps his personal information to himself. But that doesn’t mean he is ashamed of working in

one of the Westside’s biggest legal marijuana operations. He just wants a lot of the other pot shops to dry up and disappear. Literally dry up. In July, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is going to have the legal duty to shut off water and electricity to an estimated 150-plus marijuana dispensaries operating in Los Angeles -- operating without a license. The idea is to put them out of business. “It’s about time,” Chris said, who sits by the entrance of the Green Goddess, a legitimate medicinal/recreational pot dispensary in Venice. The sign outside says plainly,

“Peace, Love and Flower Power.” Peace as in mellow, laid back and comfortably stoned. Not illegal. “We’ve been in business since the beginning, one of the first 134 licensed pot dealerships operating under Proposition T,” which legalized marijuana for medical use in California in 2006. Green Goddess has to compete with shops that don’t supply the City the niceties that come with legal, regulated operation, mainly a 15 percent tax on marijuana sales, along with whatever sales tax is involved. As you have probably seen, on billboards, t-shirts, banners, bumper stickers and everywhere else, pot is legal for medicinal as well

as recreational use. The difference between the two involves a doctor’s prescription and a difference in sale price for the leaves in question. You do need a license to sell it. A lot of people on the youth-oriented locales on the Westside are happy to sell. But they don’t have licenses from the City. And since they don’t have licenses, they can sell cheaper than their licensed counterparts. Beginning in July, Los Angeles is fighting back. In February, the City Council directed the City Attorney to draft an ordinance aimed at getting unlicensed sellers out of the shops and out of business. The idea is this: As of July, City inspectors are going to go around and shut down the water and electricity at shops that don’t have the proper paperwork that allows them to sell marijuana. It makes sense. Licensed marijuana, for recreational use anyway, is subject to a 15 percent tax, on top of what you pay in sales tax. The guy who has a van on Venice Blvd. doesn’t. Doc, who has enough money to just operate as he pleases, notes that a lot of pot shops are just going to do what weed-vendors have been doing all over the state. They’re just going to mellow out. Watch and wait while their head shops get shut

VENICE BOYS TENNIS SERVING IT UP BIG Gondoliers dominant in league play. By Chad Winthrop Just a month into their season, the Venice High School Gondoliers boys tennis team find themselves playing great tennis versus some stiff competition. Venice opened their season with a bang on February 28, taking on Western League foes Los Angeles CES High School, and walked off the court with a 5-2 victory. In addition to sweeping the doubles, the Gondoliers picked up key victories at #2 and #3 singles. After dropping back to back matches versus Hamilton High School and Narbonne High School, Venice hopped on the 405 and took on Westchester High School and picked up a 6-1 victory versus their league rivals. On March 14, Venice faced off versus Palisades High School, one of the best teams in Los Angeles. While Venice lost 7-0, their #3 doubles team lost a hard fought 6-4 battle versus a high-caliber team. Quick to recover, Venice four days later earned a convincing 5-2 victory over University High School. Venice finds themselves now with a 3-3, including a 3-2 clip in league play. Up next for the Gondoliers is April 2 affair away versus Hamilton.

Suspect Still At-Large in SM Scooter Hit and Run

41-year-old Michael Ramljak identified as the victim. By Sam Catanzaro

On Friday, March 22 the victim in a fatal hit and run scooter collision was identified as police still search for the suspect. According to the coroner’s office, 41-year-old Michael Ramljak was the victim in last Friday’s fatal e-scooter collision in Santa Monica. According to LinkedIn, Ramljak was the owner of the Giggling Machinist Mobile Welding and Machining and also a board member of the German American Club of Santa Monica. The driver is still at large and the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) is seeking the public’s assistance with any information related to this fatal collision. On March 15, 2019 at about 8:30 p.m., SMPD Officers responded to a radio call for service at the 2700 block of 3rd Street regarding a Hit and Run Traffic Collision involving a motorized scooter and vehicle. When officers arrived, they located Ramljak being treated by the Santa Monica Fire Department Paramedics with significant head and body trauma. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, a short

time later, the Ramljak succumbed to his injuries. SMPD’s Major Accident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. A preliminary investigation revealed that Ramljak was riding a personally owned electric scooter (“City Hopper”) southbound on 3rd Street when for unknown reasons he fell onto the roadway. As Ramljak remained on the roadway, he was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on 3rd Street. The driver stopped and exited his vehicle; however, fled the scene prior to first responders arriving. The suspect vehicle is as an older model off white or tan 4-door sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry with possible damage to the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. The suspect driver is a white male, 30-40 years old, 6’2” tall, medium build, shaved head or short hair and wearing prescription glasses. The investigation is ongoing and investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who was in the area near the time of the collision. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Investigator Scott Pace at (310) 458-8954 or the Santa Monica Police Department at (310) 458-8495.

Out of your Head: Into your Body! By Guy C amilleri Are you tracking how many hours this week will be spent being a spectator in life by watching or listening to what others are doing or what they are saying? Are you aware of how many hours this week are being spent as a participant in your own life; the act of literally doing something that engages the body to move? With technology permeating our very fabric of being, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to notice what is happening in our bodies, and more importantly, to literally get out of our head and into our bodies. The body needs to move! It is hard-wired to move, and because we are spending more hours per day being sedentary human beings, it’s no accident that SITTING IS THE NEW CANCER. As an actor and acting coach, the idea of getting out of our head (the chatter of the mind), and into our body (using your body to perform an activity) is nothing new. The brain is continually seeking comfort whether it be the past or the future, and yet when the mind is engaged in completing a specific task that requires concentration, the frequency of the chatter seems to come down a couple of notches. By lowering this frequency, the actor can now activate the body and simultaneously notice (and report back if necessary) what

“The body needs to move! It is hard-wired to move, and because we are spending more hours per day being sedentary human beings”

is happening in the body. Once this is occurring, the actor can begin to calibrate the body, complete the task at hand and accomplish the goal set out at the beginning of the scene. When an actor is doing something, really doing something whether it be internal, external (or both), in my humble opinion, is one of the most fascinating things to witness. Because, at this moment, right before our very eyes, stands a living breathing human being. And, this becomes even more thrilling when the reality is heightened, and

the personal stakes are high! This is why I say regularly: “Acting is doing, and the doing requires practice.” In the doing of something specific, the mind is engaged, and nothing makes a mind happier than being involved. I invite you to become aware of the hours spent being a spectator and urge you to get up, go outside, notice the world around you, the people in it and take that first step into a life that will include carving out time to honor what has always been and will always be true: WE ARE BODIES IN MOTION.

down. Then they’ll move their operation to another location a few doors down and reopen, again without having to pay taxes. The Department of Water and Power has sent around notifications that it plans to move in on unlicensed pot operations as soon as the City Department of Cannabis Regulation gives the word. “Couldn’t happen soon enough,” Chris said, who notes that his shop, Green Goddess, has been operating legally since the dawn of medical marijuana in California back in 2006. The shop collects taxes on its fine selection of pot and paraphernalia, and even regular smokers supplies. And it employs two guards. The guy operating on his own on the street most likely has no guards. And certainly no license, and certainly no legal recourse if he or she gets robbed, or busted. Marijuana laws in California are pretty laid back. Getting busted for illegal sales isn’t likely to get you a draconian sentence from a judge, as it would in the Bad Old Days. So there’s not a whole lot of incentive involved in getting weed sellers to pony up. Pot is big business. So it’s no wonder that legal weed is abounding in the pockets and handbags of ordinary, and not so ordinary people, in Venice and environs. What’s worrying the City is this: The

MARCH 29 – APRIL 11, 2019

Los Angeles Police Department said that as of November 9, 2018, 143 search warrants were served on unlicensed marijuana businesses. There were 435 arrests. The LAPD grabbed an estimated $600,000 in money and 34,852 pounds of cannabis. And the police also seized 67 illegal firearms. This is one of the reasons the City is looking so hard at cutting back on cannabis sales that aren’t strictly regulated. That’s probably the reason for the guards at Green Goddess. People who deal in drugs, even little drugs like marijuana, sometimes have guns. Hell, when it comes down to serious drugs – drugs other than marijuana -- they OFTEN have guns. The City wants to sever the connection between pot buyers and serious, gun-toting, drug dealers. Hence, the legalization and regulation of pot businesses. The idea is to get the weed out of the hands of bad guys and into licensed shops where it can be regulated. At a 15 percent-plus surcharge. “Close down one of these places,” Doc told me, “They’ll just open up somewhere else. Like weeds.” Marijuana has been legal for recreational use in California since Jan. 1, though the law didn’t come into effect until Jan. 21 in Los Angeles. It could be dispensed under medical prescription since 2006. It has been in use for a lot longer. And as long as there’s a market, weed will be for sale, somewhere. Legal or not.

WHALE,

from page 1 rescue another gray whale trapped in a bouy net near Channel Island Harbour. Spotted by passengers on a boat Sunday, responders Monday and Tuesday had a difficult time untangling the whale, which is around 20-feet long, due to the animal's skittishness. "Every time we tried to get close to it, the whale would get scared and dive underwater, taking the buoy with it,” Mark Barney, a spokesperson for the United States Coast Guard (USCG), told the Los Angeles Times. According to Barney, because the whale kept swimming away, authorities have been unable to tell if the whale is injured, distressed or to what degree the animal is entangled. To help with the rescue, the USCG called in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for assistance. These two incidents are not isolated. On March 18, a gray whale carcass washed ashore at Hermosa Beach and around the same time a gray whale ended up within the Marina del Rey harbor. While the USCG and experts have not established a link between these incidents, they do not come without a surprise given the nature of gray whales. In the 17th century, gray whales were on the verge extinction due to commercial whaling, and while the Pacific Ocean population has since recovered, groups in the Atlantic Ocean never did. There are currently around 26,000 gray whales found throughout the world, all in the Pacific Ocean, and their Eastern North Pacific stock is the largest group. According to the Marine Mammal Center, gray whales have

the longest migrations of any mammal. During summer, gray whales live in the Arctic in areas rich in their food, bottom-dwelling organisms. As fall arrives, however, there is less sunlight, less food, and the water turns cold, and the whales swim to Baja California, Mexico where they enter lagoons to give birth and mate. Therefore, gray whales can be observed passing by California in December and January during their southern migration, and again in March, April, and May on their northern journey. As human activity has increased along gray whales' migration route, these mammals are facing a new set of challenges. "Gray whales generally stay around the continental shelf and are truly a coastal species...[and] migrate relatively close to shore," the Marine Mammal Center writes on their website. "Concern has grown about the impact of boat traffic around whales, and the number of boats allowed in the breeding lagoons is restricted. Along the migration route, boats' proximity to whales is also limited." While authorities have yet to determine the cause of the gray whale's death in Malibu, the incident near Channel Island Harbour is a stark reminder of the impact human activity can have on these giant mammals.

The Future of E-Learning By N ektar Baziotis

Distance learning is as old as the 18th century when teachers would send their students weekly lessons through the mail. But the advent of the Internet has introduced us to the concept of the online classroom. In the 1990’s personal computers became more popular and people realized that skills traditionally learned in a classroom could be learned over the web. With E-Learning, more people than ever had easier access to valuable educational courses that distance previously prevented them from getting to. In the early aughts advancements in computer technology popularized E-Learning, particularly when it came to learning software literacy. We also saw the introduction of educational computer games. The ClueFinders was a popular educational software created to teach older elementary-aged children algebra, grammar and spelling. Revolving around the story of a group of multi-racial kids who explore the world and solve exciting mysteries, ClueFinders was designed to appeal to both boys and girls of all backgrounds whilst introducing them to more complex academic themes through challenging and fun games and interesting storytelling. This era also saw the rapid expansion of social media and introduced to us its educational advantages. Websites with video chat capabilities could be used

STAR GAZING

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Aries will be intrigued by the project started by a colleague. This person will tell you that in the evenings and on weekends he is running a small personal business, which brings him quite a good income. You will not venture to start something like this from scratch. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus will remember this Friday as a very positive and exciting day. You will quickly be released from your professional duties once you reach the end of the assignment received from the boss. This will give you the okay to go home early. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Geminis will be fixated on the impression their appearance makes on the people around them. Having found some small flaw in your appearance, you will create a real story in your head. It will seem to you that everyone around you is just gossiping about this flaw. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers will perceive that all around them are only enemies who are harboring insidious plans. While you are so negative about others, you are unlikely to succeed in your team projects. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos are advised to show utmost vigilance in dealing with people of the opposite sex. Do not believe everything that you are told (be especially cautious about compliments you hear). There is a risk that someone using them will try to get you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgo is very tired today. You will begin a long-term home project (it is possible that it is a question of remodeling). This event will attract all your close relatives (even those who do not live with you). Repairs, of course, will not be finished today. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libras will spend Friday in a bad mood. You will be awakened by a phone call, when your unloved relative will inform you of his imminent arrival. You will go to work, dreading this unwelcome visit, and you will not be able to concentrate normally. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpios will be surrounded by very nice people. You will only get acquainted with them today, but this will not prevent you very quickly find common bonds and many interesting topics for discussion. You’ll stay up late with your new friends. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarians are lost in the labyrinths of the soul of a particular person. Remembering how he is dear to you, you will try to do everything you can to relieve him of depression. This person will agree to pour out their soul to you, but her problems will be much more complicated than you originally assumed. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns on this day are not destined to hear an exact answer to the question posed to some particular person. In the evening, the affair is in a state of uncertainty, so you will go to his house to discuss everything in private. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius will dream of the unattainable. You will be engaged in visualizing this dream, but, alas, it will not come to you yet. Instead of dreaming about a cherished purchase, think about how to make money for it. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces will spend today surrounded by their household. Your leisure will take place in the country, perhaps at an outdoor picnic. You will have plenty of contact with nature to get rid of the fatigue accumulated during the last five days.
