ABOUT THE YOC FAMILY The Youth Orchestras of Charlotte is dedicated to nurturing and inspiring the musical talents of youth in the greater Charlotte area. We provide exceptional instruction and performance experiences in symphonic orchestra and chamber ensemble settings. Our ensembles are led and coached by a team that includes musicians of the Charlotte Symphony and area music educators.

Youth Orchestra of Charlotte - A full symphony orchestra made up of high school age musicians, t performing masterpieces from the orchestral repertoire in a professional symphony setting.

Preparatory Orchestra - A full symphony orchestra that performs both actual symphonic literature and arrangements of the repertoire geared to advanced younger players. It is a training orchestra for the YOC. Sinfonia Strings - A string orchestra that prepares young musicians in the art of orchestral performance.

Flute Choir - An ensemble that performs flute choir repertoire and explores a wide variety of musical genres.

H e s t u d i e d i n t h i s c o u n t r y with David Cerone, g r a d uating as va l e d i c t o r i a n f r o m t h e C l e v e l a n d I n s t i t u t e o f M u s i c with a Bachelor of M u sic degree in 1 9 8 1 a n d a M a st e r o f M u s i c d e g r e e i n 1 9 8 2 . H e received his Doctor o f M usical Arts fr o m t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f T e x a s a t A u s t i n i n 1 9 8 7 , studying with V i n c ent Frittelli. D r . P e r e i r a s e r v e d a s C o n c e r t m a s t e r o f b o t h t he Cleveland In s t itute of Mus i c O r c h e s t r a a s we l l a s t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f T e x a s Orchestra, and c o n d ucted the Un i v e r s i t y o f T e xa s S t r i n g P r o j e c t O r c h e s t r a . S i n c e 1985, Dr. Pereira h a s been a mem b e r o f t h e C h a r l o t t e S y m p h o n y O r c h e s t r a . H e h as appeared freq uently as a so l o i s t a n d c h a m b e r m u s i c i a n i n t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s, South Africa, and N a m ibia, and has s o l o e d w i t h t he C h a r l o t t e S y m p h o n y O r c h e s t r a and the Charlotte C i v i c Orchestra. H e b e l i e v e s s t r o n g l y i n e d u c a t i n g y o u n g m u s i c i a ns and maintains an a c t i ve and succe s s f u l v i o l i n s t u di o . W i t h t h e n e w l y c r e a t e d Y O C , Dr. Pereira c o n t inues to fos t e r m u s i c a l e x c el l e n c e i n o r c h e s t r a l p e r f o r m a n ce, drawing on over 3 0 y ears of profes s i o n a l e x p e r i e n c e .
