The Youth Orchestra of Bucks County (YOBC) is a 501(c )3 nonprofit organization that creates opportunities for young musicians to achieve artistic excellence through enriching classical music experiences. Founded in 1991, YOBC offers exceptional music education programs for students in grades 3-12 including large performing ensembles, distinguished guest artists, a master class series, scholarships, chamber music groups, a concerto soloist competition, student internships, and international music tours. YOBC supports school music programs. As a signatory of the League of American Orchestra’s “Statement of Common Cause: Orchestras Support In-School Music Education” we recognize the value of music education and strive for partnerships with local school systems, and responsiveness to local, state, and national arts and academic standards. YOBC requires members to participate in their school music programs where such programs exist. YOBC’s Students-In-Concert program is dedicated to making the benefits of instrumental music education available to all students, including those from school districts that have had to eliminate or make cuts to their music programs. Concerto Soloists Two YOBC students were selected as soloists, from six highly qualified contenders in this year’s Concerto Competition which was held in June 2020. Congratulations to Jonathan Bywater (French horn) and Joseph Fan (clarinet) .

Fanfare Winds / Wind Ensemble Jonathan Bywater (French horn) Concerto for Horn in B-flat major Op. 91 (movement 1) by Reinhold Glière Jonathan Bywater is a senior at Pennsbury High School. He began playing the horn in fourth grade at age nine, and he joined YOBC’s Wind Symphony two years later under the baton of Colleen Sweetsir. Since then, Jonathan has played with Pennsbury High School’s Symphonic Winds, the Delaware Valley Wind Symphony, and Philadelphia Sinfonia. He has also participated in the bands and orchestras of various Music Educators Association festivals such as PMEA’s District 11, Region VI, and All-State ensembles in 2019 and 2020, as well as the NAfME All-National Symphony Orchestra in November 2019. His teachers have included Colleen Sweetsir and Jonathan Clark. This year marks Jonathan’s seventh year with YOBC, where he currently plays with Fanfare Winds and Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Steve Sweetsir and Robert Loughran, respectively. He plans to attend Temple University in the Fall where he will major in music performance.

Symphony Orchestra Joseph Fan (clarinet) Concerto for Clarinet in E-flat major Op. 36 (movement III) by Franz Krommer Joseph Fan is a homeschooled senior who joined YOBC as a clarinetist in 2018. He started playing the B-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, and baritone saxophone in 2013 for Dayton Christian School’s concert band and jazz band in Dayton, Ohio. He played clarinet solos in the Association of Christian Schools International Music Festival in 2016 and 2017, and received a superior rating in both events. In February 2017, he was invited to play in the Ohio State University Middle School Honor Band Festival. After moving to Pennsylvania in 2017, he played in the Philadelphia Young Musician’s Orchestra for the 2017-2018 Season. In December 2019, Joseph participated in the Crescendo International Music Competition winning a first place rating and performing at Carnegie Hall in January 2020. Joseph is currently taking lessons with Mr. David C. Blumberg. Joseph also plays the piano, guitar, and bass guitar. He enjoys biking, kayaking, and model building. He is also a black belt student in Taekwondo. He would like to thank God, his parents, Mr. Blumberg, and YOBC for helping him to become a better clarinet player.

A Fond Farewell to our Graduating Seniors Charlotte Avril Abington Friends School, Flute and Piccolo, 6 years with YOBC Future plans: This fall I'm going to Amherst College up in Massachusetts! I'll be playing flute there with the Amherst College Orchestra. Favorite YOBC memory: My favorite YOBC memory was our final outdoor concert on the 2019 Spain tour, when multiple audience members stood up to dance as we played. It was bittersweet since it was our last time playing together as a group, but it was so so fun. I think that tour was the first time I got chills from hearing an orchestra I was playing with. I kept thinking, "wow, is this really us?" A sillier memory of mine was the Wind Ensemble concert when I was in eighth grade. A baby cried during the grand pause of one of our songs, and Mr. Krelove made a face. We all had to hold in laughter so that we could keep playing! What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Just the chance to get to play with others in rehearsal was really great practice. Playing in a group is very different from solo music in terms of intonation and phrasing. The conductors really push us to listen to each other and add life to the notes.

Andrew Battaglia Hatboro-Horsham High School, Clarinet, 3 years with YOBC Future plans: Clarinet Performance/Music Education Boston University Favorite YOBC memory: Performing Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Rehearsals/Mentoring Younger Students

Jonathan Bywater Pennsbury High School, Horn, 7 years with YOBC Future plans: Music Performance major at Temple University Favorite YOBC memory: Spain tour What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Rehearsals and masterclass with Jen Montone

Donovan Dolan Council Rock North, Violin, 8 years with YOBC Future plans: Study engineering in college while participating in my college's orchestra Favorite YOBC memory: David Kim's master classes What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Rehearsals

Joseph Fan Clarinet, 3 years with YOBC Future plans: Go to college and study engineering. Favorite YOBC memory: My favorite memory was when I got to meet Socrates Villegas at the clarinet masterclass. 23

What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Playing in rehearsals helped me to improve in playing together as a group.

Danielle Gershman Pennsbury High School, Violin, 6 years with YOBC Future plans: I will attend the University of Maryland-College Park in the International Studies Scholars Program and majoring in Government and Politics. Favorite YOBC memory: A few years ago Mr. Grand was conducting for my ensemble, and he was trying to help us play a certain section the way he wanted it. He told us, “Play it like you’re buying a car.” After we all laughed he admitted even he had no idea what it meant, but he made us try anyway and it was somehow perfect. What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Rehearsals and master classes

Nathan Hoffman Neshaminy High School, Violin, 7 years with YOBC Future plans: Attending Penn State in the fall to major in physics Favorite YOBC memory: Making music with my friends What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: The rehearsals helped me the most.

Anna Kim George Washington University Online High School (GWUOHS), Violin, 4 years with YOBC Future plans: Attending the University of Rochester for Biological Sciences Favorite YOBC memory: Chi gong with Mr. Loughran outside in the sun (pre-covid) :) What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Masterclass with David Kim.

Aidan Lewis Neshaminy High School , French Horn, 2 years with YOBC Future plans: I plan to attend Temple University in the fall to pursue a double major of French Horn Performance and Music Education Favorite YOBC memory: I can say my favorite memory from YOBC could be when Mr. Loughran and Mr. Sweetsir made everyone stand up and introduce themselves to my new ensemble members. I can just remember being so nervous about what my first impression would be like, I wound up saying something so embarrassing for what I like and everyone laughed at me, yet somehow it calmed me down! If I’m being honest though, my truly favorite memory would have to be when we, in the Symphony Orchestra finished the final chord of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. I can remember how it was so silent that you could hear a pin drop and that was the moment I fell in love! The rush hasn’t left me since and I’m constantly searching for that wonderful feeling once again!

25

What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: YOBC has brought me many opportunities like my first experience with a youth orchestra to my first experience of playing with an all horn ensemble! YOBC has allowed me to become a closer member in the music community in the surrounding areas. YOBC has given me opportunity after opportunity to perform for those in our community and has allowed me to get my name out in the professional community, allowing me to perform smaller gigs more and more often! YOBC has and always will be the starting point of my professional career and I’m grateful for every moment of it.

Peter Proenca William Penn Charter School, Violin, 2 years with YOBC Future plans: I'll be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. I hope to play in the Penn Band and Symphony Orchestra. Favorite YOBC memory: I liked interacting with musicians in my section on a weekly basis and being able to rely on them for any questions that I had. What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Sectionals were very helpful because of the smaller group setting with the conductor. This also allowed more time for each section to get to know each other even better.

Matt Schneider Hatboro Horsham High School, Trumpet, 3 years with YOBC Future plans: Montgomery County Community College for two years for cheap general courses, and then figuring out where I want to go next. Favorite YOBC memory: My second concert with the program What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Rehearsals

Theo Shultz Central Bucks High School South, Violin, 5 years with YOBC Future plans: Get a Masters in Musical Performance at Temple University, and play in Symphonies/Orchestras Favorite YOBC memory: My favorite memory is on stage when I was in the Philharmonia orchestra, there was a bee on my music while I played. What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: The Master class with David Kim was extremely helpful, rehearsals in general, and the Collective Conservatory.

Liam Tapp George School, Cello, 8 years with YOBC Future plans: Going to Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Favorite YOBC memory: The Spain trip summer of 2018 What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Rehearsals and sectional practice

Ian Zwall Holy Ghost Prep, Upright Bass, 3 years with YOBC Future plans: Electrical Engineer Favorite YOBC memory: The collaboration of all the instruments to an amazing musical piece! That always thrilled me! What YOBC opportunities helped you the most: Mentoring younger students and chamber groups
