DEAR SUPPORTERS,

The #1 protective factor for at risk youth is a positive adult in their life. Yet 1 in 3 children will grow up without a mentor.

The majority of our students have experienced some type of trauma in their life: at home, in school, or because they live in an under resourced or underserved community.

The relationships our staff and volunteers are building with students, teachers and coaches in PE classrooms, on sports fields, and in community centers provide critical hope and support. The skills and character strengths we are helping kids develop are the foundation for their success - now and in the future.

A sampling of our most recent student research indicated the following student outcomes: • 50% increased their Grit scores • 72% improved their fitness levels (measured via PACER test scores) • 81% comprehension rate of Gratitude • 84% comprehension rate of SMART Goal setting skills • 91% comprehension rate of Grit As we look forward our goal continues to be to TEACH KIDS TO SUCCEED and thrive regardless of the circumstances they have been born into or the obstacles they find themselves facing. This can only happen with strong relationships and consistent support - both ours and yours.

After graduating from Conestoga High School, Mackenzie did a summer internship with YMP while she earned her degree in Psychology from Ursinus College. Now, she is getting back involved in fitness and with YMP, and is also teaching the importance of GRIT as a volunteer in the Education field.

Riyad graduated just this year after spending one year in our Friend Fitness and Coaches of Excellence programs. He is off to play College Lacrosse at Keystone College (after being named captain his senior year), and is spending the summer teaching kids LAX!

Jake Overton recently graduated from Penn State Brandywine with a degree in Business Management! He has aspirations to work in the toy and game industry, and is starting a small retail business with a friend this summer.

Our Mission

Youth Mentoring Partnership is dedicated to helping kids succeed in life through mentoring and intense physical fitness and sports.

Our Programs: Friend Fitness 1-on-1 mentoring by YMP-trained volunteers takes place after-school in schools and community fitness centers.

Our programs help kids: -

YMP coaches assist PE teachers with small group mentoring during PE class. Improved student/teacher ratio allows for individualized support.

Coaches of Excellence YMP coaches assist sports team’s coaches with small group mentoring for both school teams and club sports.

“Just Be There.”

On a Monday afternoon at Mastery Charter Shoemaker, the boy’s lacrosse team met to discuss goals, grit, and gratitude. The meeting consisted of a worksheet that provided a series of questions on the three G’s. One of the questions was, “How can I [as a coach] help you be successful this year, and later on in life.”

I gave them 5 minutes to come up with their answers. The room was quiet, as they thought.

After I gave them enough time to answer, I called on a senior student named Malik. Malik is a very talented basketball player that has just started playing Lacrosse this year, attracted to the team for their culture of hard work. I repeated the question to him, “What can I do to help you be successful?”

His reply was simple: Just be there.

Just be there. Just show that you care, and that you want to help us.

On the drive home, I thought about how I can “just be there”. Just being there is more than just coaching lacrosse, and wins and losses. It’s about the daily interactions, how they’re doing in school, how their families are, if they’re going through anything. I will tell them that I will be there for them, and that they can talk to me about anything, no matter what.

Just being there means when I’m walking in the hallways, stopping and having a conversation with them. Throwing a pass with them. Playing basketball with them.

So far at Mastery Shoemaker, it’s not just about Lacrosse. It’s not just about wins and losses. It’s more than that. It’s about being there for these boys as they grow into men, and I am ready to continue to be there for them after lacrosse.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS Up2Us Sports Over the past 4 years Up2Us Sports has quickly become one of YMP’s most critical collaborative partners. As the nationwide leader in sports-based youth development, Up2Us Sports provides funding, training, and research to support coaches and programs that harness the power of sport for social change.

Up2Us Sports has fueled YMP’s extraordinary growth providing funding (via AmeriCorps) for 20 coaches and 2 marketing positions that have resulted in over 14,000 hours of service! They have also provided important educational and professional development trainings, including trauma sensitive coaching and: • SBYD - Sports Based Youth Development • Community service opportunities, • Networking opportunities with other coaches/Non-Profits nationwide • Coaches Training Institute - Philadelphia • Returners’ Institute - Chicago With a shared vision for transforming youth and communities Up2UsSports will continue to be a critical teammate in YMP’s future growth and success. Americorps NCCC and VISTA “AmeriCorps is a voluntary civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work with a goal of ‘helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.’” With the support of Americorps NCCC, we are provided welltrained, professional coaches, and through Americorps VISTA we were able to hire our first ever Marketing and Communications Coordinator!

#Thanks2You

We also launched our year long #Thanks2You social media campaign. The kickoff included 150 of our closest friends for an evening Deck Party at the Desmond Hotel! The goal of the #Thanks2You campaign is to Thank, Inspire, and Honor mentors across the country, so we may help fill the gap for the 1 in 3 youth who grow up without a positive adult in their lives.

Our annual “got grit?” Color 5K run/walk was again a great success with over 500+ in attendance! Participants included students, families and volunteers from our service areas throughout Philadelphia, the Upper Main Line, and Coatesville.
