DEAR SUPPORTERS, The #1 protective factor for at risk youth is a positive adult in their life. Yet 1 in 3 children will grow up without a mentor.

As a result of your support, Youth Mentoring Partnership is changing that - from North Philadelphia, Conestoga to Coatesville!

The majority of our students have experienced some type of trauma in their life: at home, in school, or because they live in an under resourced or underserved community. The relationships our staff and volunteers are building with students, teachers and coaches in PE classroom, on sports fields, and in community centers provide critical hope and support. The skills and character strengths we are helping kids develop are the foundation for their success - now and in the future.

2017-18 saw YMP not only continue to increase the number of youth and communities we serve but also our overall effectiveness. A sampling of our most recent student research indicated the following student outcomes: • 50% increased their Grit scores • 72% improved their fitness levels (measured via PACER test scores) • 81% comprehension rate of Gratitude • 84% comprehension rate of SMART Goal setting skills • 91% comprehension rate of Grit As we look forward our goal continues to be to TEACH KIDS TO SUCCEED and thrive regardless of the circumstances they have been born into or the obstacles they find themselves facing. This can only happen with strong relationships and consistent support - both ours and yours.

ALUMNI UPDATES Calvin Boromeo “When I was growing up in the program, my mentor helped me become who I am today and I can’t wait to be the same for somebody else!”

Calvin was a student, peer mentor and mentor in the YMP’s Friend Fitness program for 7+ years. Profoundly inspired by the experience, he is completing a teaching degree in Physical Education at West Chester University. He has recently joined YMP as a full-time staff member focusing his efforts on Friend Fitness, a program he dearly loves.

Mairead Comaskey

Kyle Westerman

For a year, Mairead traveled around the globe. During that time she also got engaged to her best friend! She started her Masters in Bussiness & Sustainability at the University of Leeds to help companies improve their environmental impact.

Kyle was one of the first students in our programs - and is now an Amazon Executive, Officer in the Army, and pursuing his masters degree at Penn State. Along with all of this, Kyle was recently married!

Chase Aguilar Friend Fitness Alumnus Chase Aguilar was recently married!

Fiona Copeland Fiona is currently a junior at Ursinus College, working on a 2nd draft of a 400 page novel and has created a major for herself in Classics Literature.

Lily Bove Lily is currently a rising senior majoring in Communications at Temple University.

This summer she worked in Breckenridge, Colorado!

OUR MISSION

Youth Mentoring Partnership is dedicated to helping kids succeed in life through mentoring and intense physical fitness and sports.

OUR PROGRAMS: FRIEND FITNESS 1-on-1 mentoring by YMP-trained volunteers takes place after-school in schools and community fitness centers.

GRITNESS PHYS. ED. YMP coaches assist PE teachers with small group mentoring during PE class. Improved student/teacher ratio allows for individualized support.

COACHES OF EXCELLENCE YMP coaches assist sports team’s coaches with small group mentoring for both school teams and club sports.

Yadir was recognized for consistent effort in his academic studies. All his efforts have paid off - as he scored so well on his Keystone Exams that he received an extended spring break!

NEW PARTNERSHIPS Beat the Streets

Early in 2018, YMP began our latest COE collaboration with Beat The Streets (BTS) of Philadelphia. BTS works with over a thousand youth in Philadelphia and Camden, providing under-resourced schools with wrestling coaches, equipment and tutoring - free of charge.

Presently YMP collaborates with BTS at three locations; • Mastery Harrity • Belmont Charter • Central High School The Coaches of Excellence (COE) program is designed to leverage the athlete’s love for sports into success in the classroom and life, strengthen the mentoring relationship with coaches, and teach goal setting skills, grit and gratitude.

Coatesville Area School District Over a year in the making, and with the generous support of the United Way of Chester County and Brandywine Health Foundation, YMP is more than excited to announce the expansion of our Gritness PE program into Coatesville Area School District.

Gritness PE is YMP’s in-classroom mentoring program. Our team assists in supporting and reinforcing relationships between students and physical education teachers, and developing goal setting skills, grit, and gratitude in participants.

GREAT VALLEY MENTAL HEALTH DAY The YMP team was invited to share our goal setting, grit, and gratitude curriculum with 1000+ Great Valley High School students and faculty as part of their Mental Health Day. This day is an innovative effort to refocus students after the stress and fatigue of midterms.

YMP coaches led highly interactive workshops as participants shared inspirational stories of overcoming obstacles, and the importance of mentors, goals, and reflections of gratitude (see picture).

Along with all of this, students had an opportunity to challenge themselves with YMP’s “grit building” workout!

2018 “GOT GRIT?” COLOR 5K Over 700 students, family members, and friends walked, skipped, ran and danced around the 5k course in East Goshen Township Park - all the while being showered with a rainbow of colored corn starch!

The June event raised $35K to support YMP’s mission and help keep YMP’s programs free of charge to all families!
