The summer break is a great opportunity for young people in Enfield to do something positive.

You could follow in the footsteps of young people who have already achieved so much this year. There’s the great consultation work being done in secondary schools by the Council’s Area Youth Forum (pages 4-5), creation of the new young people’s panel at Enfield Foyer (page 15), volunteering support at the Bountagu disability advice centre (page 11) and football success in Germany from an Enfield team involving young people with disabilities (page 21).

From 28 July Enfield Council youth centres will be open to young people aged 11 and above.

This means pupils who are just finishing year 6, and all pupils year 7 and above, can attend our youth centres from this date - starting with this year's summer programmes.

We’ve moved offices Enfield Council’s youth support teams have moved to one main location in Edmonton. At the same time we have made it easier for young people to call us by introducing one number for all our teams - 020 8379 5800.

Calling this new number (020 8379 5800) will put you in touch with staff including those responsible for our Youth Centres, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), Youth Action Volunteering Enfield (YAVE) and Youth Participation.

Should a face-to-face meeting be required it will be at one of our youth centres or new office location in Edmonton.

The Forum splits Enfield into four areas. They developed the ‘What do YOUth think?’ campaign aimed at giving young people the opportunity to make a selection from the following key Sex & relationship education topics:

Area Youth Forum 4 kicked off the campaign in March and ran sessions at Chace Community, St. Anne’s Catholic High School for girls and Enfield Grammar for boys to capture their top two priorities for the Enfield Town area.

The top two priorities are...

As detailed by the Area Youth Forum 4 members, “We discovered that the top two priorities for the young people in Area 4 are: Providing Jobs and Training opportunities for Young People; and Improved Sex and Relationships Education.

“As a result we arranged to speak with Enfield Council staff responsible for services around public health and also Council staff supporting young people with jobs and training opportunities. These meetings were very informative and we also discussed ways in which improvements can be made.

“One direct result of the campaign was working with the Council to create a very visible jobs and training presence on the Youth Enfield website.

There is a page dedicated to providing advice and raising awareness of jobs, apprenticeships and other learning opportunities for young people aged 16-24. The Jobs and learning opportunities page (http://tiny.cc/juf9fx) can be found under the Advice and Support menu on the Youth Enfield site

and to increase its visibility there is a quicklink tab on the homepage too.

“We are proud to have taken the lead with this campaign and will be supporting the other Area Youth Forums (Areas 1, 2 & 3) in conducting surveys in their respective areas too. Once all the surveys are done we will have a complete picture of what the main issues are for young people across Enfield.

We will then join up and deliver more projects that will address these specific concerns. So look out for further updates in future editions of Youth Enfield magazine”.

Area Youth Forums Have your say and make a difference about the things that matter to you. If you want to be the voice of young people in the borough get involved in your local Area Youth Forum (AYF).

The AYF exists to ensure that local concerns of young people are heard, discussed and acted upon. They meet once a month and any young person aged 11-19 (up to 25 with learning difficulties or disabilities) can attend to voice their views and ideas. Hi-five Red Room Music and Film project The Red Room Music and Film Project supports young people with interests in music, drama, film, event planning and sound engineering.

To mark their 5th anniversary the team are planning a series of five key events. The first was the ‘Red Room Retro Review’ on 23 May 2014.

The packed audience at the Red Room in Ponders End Youth Centre were entertained by members past and present with an evening of reflection and live music. The next event in the series will be at Forty Hall, Forty Hill, London EN2 9HA on the 13 July from 1pm to 6pm.

It’s nearly July and that means it’s time to enrol onto the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) scheme.

DofE gives all young people aged 14-25 the chance to develop skills for work and life, fulfil their potential and have a brighter future.

There are three levels you could complete – Bronze, Silver or Gold, and it takes between 6 to 18 months to complete a level.

Completing the award does not need to be just about physical outdoor activities. You can participate through indoor sports and community work and you can even complete

your outdoor expeditions on horseback.

Rudolph Walker’s Inter-School Drama Award You may recognise Rudolph Walker OBE who plays Patrick Truman in the Eastenders BBC TV serial. His acting career spans over 40 years and back in the 70s he started The Rudolph Walker Inter-School Drama Award (RWISDA).

Its aim then, and still very much the focus now, was to offer an alternative to ‘hanging around’ after school and alleviating boredom which can lead to anti-social behaviours.

Bishop Stopford's School is one of the Enfield schools taking part and has already produced winners for the awards. We met Rudolph on a recent visit to the school as he chatted to participants, past and present.

As Rudolph explains: "I wanted young people to experience the joys I experience from drama but to also be recognised for their efforts too. To make a success you need to lay the foundations early. It requires effort outside normal school time, lots of enthusiasm and belief. My acting friends are on board too as mentors to help the budding actors and those with no previous drama interest alike complete their remarkable journey. For me the greatest achievement is seeing lives change.

The shy ones find a voice to express themselves, there is a positive change in behaviour from so-called troublemakers and all are supported to realise their dreams”.

Describing their experience previous winners Rhys, Florence and Kazeem said: “There is definitely more to just winning the award.

Rubbing shoulders and sharing a meal with famous actors makes you feel famous too. It’s a moment that will stay with us forever and who knows what doors it can open to finding the career of our dreams”.

Kwabella, Jodi and Joseph are hoping to pick up an award this year. They said: “We really enjoy drama so picking up that trophy is a step closer to being a professional actor. We’re in it together so we will work as a team to reach our goal.

We are extremely excited to have met Rudolph. He is a great actor and role model for us. We want to thank him and our drama teacher Ms Wiles for making this all possible. Summing up the opportunity in three words, they would be ‘exciting, step, forward’”.

Bountagu drop in centre Information and advice for disabled young people and their families Three students from West Lea School – Umran, Jack and Ozan - have been doing work experience at the new Bountagu project in Bounces Road, Edmonton. This is an information and advice centre dedicated to supporting disabled young people and their families. The students have been learning how to run a community project and gaining experience in talking and giving advice to local people too.

As they explain: “The information we give will be aimed at disabled young people and their families. We cover a number of areas including safety, child care, health, employment and other community services. Once a month, we will also

have a social worker with us to give information on funding for short breaks and other disability benefits for children and young people. We also have information on various activities you can try and if you just want to talk to us and have a cup of tea – that’s OK too. As well as giving advice and information to people who pop in, we will also be working together to build a closer community and hopefully make it a friendlier area too!

So – come in and see what Enfield has to offer!

You will be amazed”.

Youth Centres offer fantastic free activities and opportunities to learn new skills, gain qualifications and help run the youth centre too. Here are just a flavour of some activities you may not know are available at our youth centres.

Unity Hub @ Craig Park - Unity Hub @@ Craig Park A1 Girls Group After School Club The friendly and inspiring A1 Girls Group meets every Wednesday 7:30-8:30pm. They participate in sessions covering various topics including: self-image; self-confidence; team building; communication; fashion tips. They also organise hair & beauty classes and pamper sessions. This is a great opportunity for girls aged 13-19 to relate and guide each other through their stages of adolescence and be able to ask questions freely without being judged. The current girls are going through a programme all about selfimage and looking after themselves. The girls are watching short clips about understanding their own attitudes and behaviours and how they, and others, see themselves. The A1 Girls Group are well on their way to completing ASDAN qualifications. Volunteers in the group are counting this towards their sectional award through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

This lively and bubbly after school club runs on Thursdays and Fridays at 4 -6pm. Young people have access to the climbing wall, arts and crafts, dance and multisport. We are also recruiting for young leaders aged 16+ who would like to mentor some of the other young people and help with our homework corner.

As Mourad explains: “Coaching at Spurs is challenging as the standard expected at a premiership club is very high. The same approach and quality is applied no matter the coaching environment. So the young people I coach can expect the same level of one-to-one support and advice to achieve their goals. The group are already doing regular weight, fitness, cardio and football training with a view to progressing themselves physically and mentally. They are doing very well and with excellent facilities, atmosphere and environment at the centre there is every opportunity for them to continue with their fitness goals and aspirations.”

Ponders End Youth Centre - Sports Coaching The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is a charity linked to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (Spurs). It is committed to providing opportunities for young people using sport, health and education programmes in a number of London boroughs. Visit www.tottenhamhotspur.com/ foundation to find out more.

Enfield Council is benefitting from a 10-year commitment that started in 2010 to deliver sport, physical activity and community programmes across the borough. This has resulted in Mourad, a Tottenham Hotspurs Coach, coming to Ponders End Youth Centre twice a week to provide free coaching to young people.

YOUR GUIDE TO ACTIVITIES FROM JULY TO AUGUST 2014 Summer Uni has been providing free activities and courses for young people, 13 to 19yrs and up to 25yrs with a learning difficulty or disability, in Enfield for the past seven years.

Art, music, digital technology, sport and fitness, careers, personal development, creative writing, dance... We have tried to incorporate something for everyone.

Some of the courses this year include Young Apprentice, a valuable introduction to how to start your own business. It will cover pricing, selling and promoting, developing a product, branding, copyright and culminating in pitching to a client.

Or maybe you like the sound of Working in the City where young people spend time at leading city firms gaining an insight into the life of a city worker. Find out about different careers, take part in our trading floor simulation, learn valuable skills, gain tips on CVs and interviews and meet lots of new people.

If that’s not for you, how about trying out your musical talent in the Band Project at the Red Room.

Get confidence boosting tips, sing you heart out, learn to draw Marvel Book characters or dance your way onto the stage at our End of Summer Celebration Event!

, Enfield, Foyer s Young People s Panel Enfield Foyer, run by Christian Action Housing Association (CAHA) in Edmonton, helps young people aged 16 to 24 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

It provides a temporary place for young people to stay for up to two years along with support to get them into employment, education or training and to live independently in permanent accommodation. As well as the Foyer, CAHA also run Deborah Tempest House, Teresa House and the Young People First Services which aim to follow the same model as the Foyer.

At the Foyer, CAHA recently launched the Young People's Panel to give the young residents a voice.

Something they were very keen to do straightaway was to hold a youth celebration event. Here Lauren (17), the first chair of the CAHA Young People's Panel, tells us more...

“When you leave home at 16/17yrs old there is a lot to think about and there can be a lot of changes going on in your life. Living on your own can be a freedom but it’s difficult when you’re suddenly responsible for yourself. Everyday things can be difficult – like getting up and going to school or college or even finding work and paying your rent. The support workers here provide advice and guidance and we get workshops and training sessions to help us with things like health, life skills and employability.

“People often look at us like we’re ‘up to no good’ but most of us are just normal young people trying to figure things out for ourselves. Lots of us have something that we are proud of and for this reason we are holding a celebration event.

“Celebrating success is a major achievement for us because so often young people in our situation don’t have a lot to shout about, but this year we are making a point of celebrating with our own showcase of talent at Enfield Dugdale Centre. We will have young people hosting the event, making speeches and performances from home grown talent! This will be a very positive event and we want to make sure that we promote a positive image for all young people”.

Begin your coaching career here with this one day course to give you all the skills you need to lead football activities as a young person. The Football Association (FA) Junior Football Organisers (JFO) course is a stand alone Governing Body qualification that provides students with the specific knowledge and skills to work with children aged 6+.

Sexual health: too shy to test for an STI? SHOUT 4YP (Sexual Health Outreach for Young People) nurses, Angela or Delia, can help you make choices concerning your sexual health and contraception.

One thing Angela and Delia have been noticing is the lack of boys coming to sexual health clinics to test for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The nurses put this down to boys being shy and passing the responsibility of a regular sexual health check to their partners instead.

Testing gives the reassurance that you do not have any STIs or the opportunity to deal with it if you have one.

Some STIs will not cause any noticeable changes whereas others will cause discomfort especially when you pass urine or during sex.

If you have had unprotected sex and not used a condom it is good to have a check. Young men are advised to have a routine test at least once a year. You can be tested every three months if you are changing partners or you are concerned you may have an STI. The simple ‘pee in a pot’ test guarantees confidentiality so no-one else needs to know about your business. There is also a ‘Test No Talking’ service where results are sent by text to the number given when handing in the urine sample.

So there’s no need to be shy to ask about STIs. Pop into your local clinic for your sexual health check-up now.

Remember, the sooner you know there is an infection the easier it is to deal with it.

Teenage sexual exploitation and trafficking What is child exploitation?

Child sexual exploitation is the exploitation of any child under-18 who is coerced into exchanging sex or sexual acts for something - such as alcohol, drugs, money, affection, accommodation, or gifts. This is against the law even if the person exploiting the child is also a young person. Children can be sexually exploited by organised groups of people, by gangs, or within relationships.

Sexual exploitation is a form of sexual abuse but the abusers can make it appear like a healthy relationship.

In this way the young person may feel like they need or are dependent on the person exploiting them. Sexual exploitation can happen when young people are vulnerable or have little choice due to their home life or lack of money - but it can happen to anyone.

What is child trafficking?

Child trafficking is the illegal movement of children into the country. Many of the children who come here in this way have been promised a good job or an education. Often their parents have been promised that their children will be offered a better life. When they arrive here they are almost always exploited for financial gain.

What does the app do?

With just one touch of a button you can send a message to: check in: reassure your family and friends to tell them where you are collect me: request someone you trust to collect you, complete with details of your location interrupt me: need a reason to excuse yourself from a situation and finding it difficult to make a phone call or send a text? Then send a one touch ‘interrupt me’ message

What is the Safe site locator?

If you find yourself away from home and feeling vulnerable and need to find a place of safety, you can tap on the ‘safe site’ locator and tap-it will present you with your nearest police stations and ‘safe sites’ that have been approved by your local council.

When should I call emergency services? tap-it is not a substitute for emergency services. If you feel you are in immediate danger you should call 999 for the Police and then use tap-it to send messages to your network of friends.

Your best friends/friends?

The app allows you to set up your own network of friends but make sure you select people that are most likely to respond to your alert. A few key questions to bear in mind: Do they live locally? Do they have a car to collect you if necessary? Do they keep their phone with them and are they good at answering normal calls? Are they people you can trust and rely on?

What kind of phone do I need? tap-it works on iPhone and Android devices (Windows to follow shortly) and uses Wi-Fi, mobile internet and GPS to locate you. Your location is only transmitted when you hit collect / interrupt or checkin messages. Permanent tracking is not used, this is to protect your privacy and to prevent unwanted surveillance.

Am I charged for messages?

There is no charge for alert messages because tap-it implements its own messaging/notification system.

SMS messages are used when you initially activate the app and when you invite friends to download.

Enfield football team takes on Germany

Simon Spencer, the goalkeeper added “I am happy because I saved the penalty for my team to which the team burst into spontaneous applause.”

Enfield’s twin town of Gladbeck in Germany was the wonderful setting for a football competition. The team that took part from Enfield included young people with disabilities.

The boys are part of a Saturday football team organised by Enfield Children & Young Persons Services (ECYPS) – the organisation that supports other voluntary and community organisations who deliver services to children and young people in Enfield.

The team did brilliantly, winning three out of the five games they played. Isaac Hines one of the team members said "I've had a fantastic time, I've never played in a team like this before and the standard was really good actually. I was quite surprised. I would definitely do it again."

2014 A summer of festivals and fun If you’re into music festivals there will be choices to make this summer.

Will you choose a bigger music festival such as Latitude, Wireless, Found, Lovebox or one of the many local outdoor music events and gatherings to go to? You will probably be thinking about what to wear and even choosing which tent to buy (especially if you left the last one in the field last year!).

Attention is given to these choices but what about your physical safety and sexual health?

Let’s face it – the sun will be out, you’ll be meeting new people, listening to great music and on a break from work, college or university.

You might have a couple of drinks, be offered drugs and you may have sex.

How can you stay safe and still soak in the summer festival vibe?

• Leave anything valuable at home – bring a cheap mobile phone with a pay as you go SIM rather than your expensive smart phone.

• Watch over your drinks at all times – even soft drinks can be spiked with a substance without your knowledge.

• Remember that alcohol or drugs can affect your ability to make safe judgements.Try not to mix drugs and drink as it will make you sick.

If you're a regular drug user, don't take more than you're used to.

• Having sex without a condom increases the risk of unplanned pregnancy or catching a sexually transmitted infection (STI). You may find emergency contraception and sexual health advice available from onsite medics at the venues. But it would be sensible to have your supplies of medicines and contraception ready before you go.

Enfield at War: 1914-1918 Enfield Museum is hosting a free exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. It provides an insight into how the war affected Enfield residents - both in the trenches and on the home front – and the important roles and contributions to the war effort made by those living within the borough.

Elena is a young person who recently visited the exhibition and tells us more about it.

“Enfield has always been home. I went to school, college and I now work here too. I have always felt a sense of pride whenever Enfield has been recognised for doing something great.

“When I visited the exhibition there was only a handful of young people there. This made me realise that perhaps young people in Enfield are not aware of the rich history it holds.

“The exhibition not only marks the centenary of the First World War, but looks at the part Enfield had to play in it. Many don’t realise how significant Enfield was during the war. At the outbreak of World War One, Enfield was home to the government owned Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield Lock which produced the famous Lee Enfield rifle used by the British Army throughout the conflict. Many families were affected too with most men going off to fight and leaving the women to hold down jobs and look after children, so there were huge changes going on.
