IMPACT THROUGH SERVICE “When YouthBuild students decide to come back to school, and then participate in projects that will give back to the community, that’s them using their education and training to make the world better for others.” Ameen Akbar, Director of Student Life

Community Service Cleanup September 2017- Over 200 students and staff members joined together for a day of service at Marie Dendy Playground (10th & Oxford Streets) to clean up the park and the surrounding streets. Students picked up trash, swept sidewalks, planted trees and painted signs of inspiration to hang in the playground, giving the community a facelift.

Service with North Philly Peace Park February 2018- Students worked on an ongoing community beautification project with partner, North Philadelphia Peace Park. They built and painted garden beds, working to install them into the park’s community garden.

MLK Day of Service

Tree Day with TD Bank October 2017- YouthBuild students teamed up with TD Bank to make a difference in the community. Together they planted 46 trees near the Orinoco Civic House in Kensington. Students had the chance to network with representatives from TD Bank, Hilton Hotels and Philadelphia Parks & Rec., all while learning how to properly plant trees.

Spring Break Service Trip in Puerto Rico March 2018- 18 students and 6 staff members traveled to Utuado, Puerto Rico for the 6th consecutive year for YB's annual Spring Break Service Trip. Students worked on projects that helped residents recover from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. This annual trip is a life changing experience for students.

January 2018- On MLK Day, YouthBuild Philly staff, students and community partners (Saint Gobain, DMi Partners, GAP Inc., Philadelphia Phillies, Starbucks and Year UP Greater Philadelphia) came together to revitalize the halls of William Rowen Elementary School in Northwest Philadelphia.

Giving Back with the Malcolm Jenkins Foundation May 2018- YouthBuild Philly staff and students volunteered at the Get Ready Fest, hosted by The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation, led and founded by Philadelphia Eagles Safety, Malcolm Jenkins. The festival provides families in need with food and health related services.

EXPANDING OUR IMPACT Introducing The Learning Exchange

Partnerships

Cohesive Culture

In May 2018, YouthBuild Philly launched The Learning Exchange, our first funded initiative to more proactively disseminate the practices most critical to our success with a range of schools and organizations working with opportunity youth. It is Philadelphia's first lab based learning model intended to provide participants with an opportunity to engage in practitioner led and designed learning experiences. The Learning Exchange aims to empower participants with the tools to successfully implement YB's best practices at their own organizations or schools. Areas of focus are Cohesive Culture, Partnerships and Culture of Learning. Through rigorous workshops, trainings, structured observations and mentorship, participants are equipped to positively impact their own institutions. SHUJJA '18 Excerpt from Shujja Hayes' Graduation Speech Recipient of the YouthBuild Excellence Award

"We prove our critics wrong. More importantly, we prove something not only to our critics, but to ourselves. We proved that when you put in the hard work, you can accomplish your goals. We proved that we do have the capability, the efficiency, the talent and the potential to change the trajectory of our lives, and the lives of our families. Â We proved that in the process of reaching our own goals we are also making our community a better place. I promise I have never seen a people more driven, more dedicated, more futurefocused than the people I see sitting in front of me today. Because while we were once considered to be high school dropouts, we sit here proudly today knowing that we will now always be called high school graduates. I don't just look at YouthBuild as a school, but as a second family because of the tremendous amount of love and support that they show us each and every day. YouthBuild gave me a passion to be a part of my community; to be a man of the people, not above but equal."

- Shujja Hayes, Class of 2018 14

MEET ERNEST '18 Ernest Dawkins wanted a change, and his cousin (Class of 2012 Alumna) encouraged him to apply to YouthBuild. Unlike his last school experience, Ernest was looking for a school where he would stay engaged and grow as a student. Once he got to YouthBuild, he did just that. Ernest was a thriving student on the Advanced Construction track, with the goal of graduating, going to college for Carpentry and pursuing his dream of playing basketball. It’s safe to say that Ernest enjoyed YouthBuild. He says “my time at YouthBuild has been the best experience of my life. I'm engaged and I talk more in class than I ever have before.” This has not always been the case for Ernest who eventually dropped out of his last school due to low interest and motivation. “YouthBuild provides more of a personal touch and one on one attention with students,” he says. Ernest made the decision to prioritize his education and get on a better path. “School is my priority. This is a big shift for me, and has taken a lot of stress off my mom. She doesn't have to worry as much now that I'm on a better path,” he explains. Ernest’s main source of motivation has always been his family. As a 19 year old with North Philadelphia roots, Ernest has a strong desire to support his family (Mom, Dad, 4 brothers and 1 sister). “I want to be able to support my family. I want to be in a position to help them. They have already done so much for me.”

Additionally, Ernest's passion for basketball helps to keep him driven. He started playing basketball at the early age of four. Ernest learns from his love of basketball on and off the court. “The respect I have for my teammates, is the same respect I have for my YouthBuild family,” he says. “If you have a strong work ethic and grind hard, you will get results. Just put your all into it,” he explains. When asked about his favorite player Ernest says, “I love the game. I do not have a favorite player. You can learn from any player, from the worst to the best. You have to study them in life, not just their game.” Since graduating in August 2018, Ernest is closer than ever to his goals and he couldn’t be more excited. Ernest acknowledges some of his teachers who have contributed to his growth as a student. “Shout out to Ms. Kenya, who makes learning easy. I love her way of teaching,” he says, “Shout out to Mr. Rich, who always stays on me and makes sure that my work is done.” “YouthBuild has helped to put me on the road to success.” Ernest's journey to success continues. He is currently thriving as an employee at Citizens Bank Park in the Maintenance Department.

VERONICA '18 ALUMNI PROFILE- VERONICA MENJIVAR, Valedictorian Looking for opportunity and relief from the violence in their hometown of Ilobasco, El Salvador, Veronica Menjivar's parents thought it would be best for her to move to the United States. In 2015, Veronica reluctantly left home without her family and all that she knew in search of new opportunities and a chance to further her education. That year, she moved to Dallas, TX with a foster family for four months. Shortly after, she was placed with a foster family in Philadelphia, PA where she's made her roots ever since. The transition into her first Philadelphia high school was very tough, as the learning environment was not a good fit for her. With English being her second language, Veronica was having a hard time in classes, and wasn't getting the academic support that she needed. After much thought and consideration of her options, she ultimately decided to drop out of school and find a job. Yet her desire to further her education remained. Knowing this, her social worker and boyfriend both recommended that she apply to YouthBuild Philly. After doing her own research, she agreed it would be a good fit and applied to YouthBuild. Veronica received an invitation to Mental Toughness Training and ultimately was accepted into the Class of 2018, bringing her one step closer to her goal of graduating and getting her diploma. Eager to dive into her studies again and earn her diploma, Veronica enrolled in the Business Administration Scholar (BAS) vocational track. “I chose BAS because I was professionally motivated.

16

I always wanted to be a professional woman,” says Veronica. During her time in BAS she gained invaluable professional skills that continue to help her to this day. “I learned how to type, write papers, and use Google docs. All things that are helpful now on my education journey,” explains Veronica. Veronica's fondest memories as a BAS student were her times working in the student cafe with her peers and Ms. Jennifer (Barista Instructor). “It took me out of my comfort zone,” Veronica recalls as she describes her experience learning best practices for customer service during barista training. It was experiences such as this that prepared Veronica for her 4 week internship with ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates). “BAS prepared me with people skills for ECFMG,” she explains. During her internship, beyond providing clerical support, Veronica built significant relationships and developed her communication skills. Her professional growth paved the way for an offer of a part-time position with ECFMG at the conclusion of her internship. When it came time for graduation, Veronica remembers the day that Ms. Melissa (BAS Instructor/Coordinator) shared some great news with her. “‘You are Valedictorian,’” Veronica recalls Ms. Melissa telling her. “At first I didn't truly understand what it meant,” Veronica explains. After consulting Google Translate and then her brother, Veronica fully understood and felt elated.

VERONICA '18 ALUMNI PROFILE- VERONICA MENJIVAR, Valedictorian “It was a good feeling. I was so happy. I never thought I would be in the position of being the top student. It was difficult with the language barrier and having English being my second language. That's why I was so surprised,” says Veronica. Veronica's parents were proud, but were not as surprised as she was. “‘Even when you were in El Salvador, you were intelligent,’” Veronica recalls her father's response to the good news. Even though college wasn't her original goal, her time at YouthBuild motivated her to further her education. She is now enrolled in the BUSCA (Bilingual Undergraduate Studies for Collegiate Advancement) program at LaSalle University. As a part-time student she is studying Literature, Political Science and English with the goal of attaining her Bachelor's degree while she continues to work part-time at ECFMG. Veronica ultimately wants to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a flight attendant. “The first places I want to visit are El Salvador and the Dominican Republic,” says Veronica.

"Without motivation there is not sacrifice. Without sacrifice, there is not discipline. And without discipline, there is not success."

Veronica closed her Valedictorian address with a quote that she learned from her father: "Without motivation, there is not sacrifice. Without sacrifice, there is not discipline. And without discipline, there is not success." Veronica carries these words with her and continues to excel. She ended her first semester at LaSalle with honors and made the Dean's List.
