MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP
Dear Friends and Supporters, There is something sacred and special about having a community to lean on for support, love and solidarity, especially during difficult times. This past year, as the world learned how to cope with a global pandemic, the nation faced heightened intense and traumatic times in the fight for racial equity after the brutal murder of George Floyd and countless other Black Americans. It goes without saying that these unprecedented times shook us all to the core, yet at the same time revealed our strength, resilience and need for unity now more than ever. In recent years, the YouthBuild Philly community developed a call and response chant that has become a core part of our school culture: Call: “YouthBuild, YouthBuild how y’all feel?” Response: “SOLID, SOLID!” When the YouthBuild community says we are “solid”, we mean that we are “good” no matter what. We are not “good” in the sense of saving face and turning a blind eye to negative feelings or circumstances. However, we are “good” or “solid” because we are resilient, strong and united as a community, come what may. It is because of our loving community that we have been able to get through this challenging year. The Class of 2020 experienced and navigated changes like no other class in the history of YouthBuild. Mid-year, we closed the doors of our school building and for the first time ever, made a full shift to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After coming up with

a plan for all students to receive Chromebooks to effectively complete their school work from home, our school community and culture shifted to a virtual learning environment and still remained connected. Despite the mandatory social distancing, some ways we maintained a cohesive culture were by: Translating our school routines to virtual platforms- We hosted community meetings on Zoom. Our amazing instructors shifted to online lesson plans via Google Classroom, Zoom and Instagram Live. Our Student Life team utilized social media tools to help facilitate student engagement amongst our community. Creating safe spaces where students can share feelings and ask questions- Our community often came together via Zoom to digest, unpack and discuss the difficult feelings that came up about remote learning, the pandemic, or the social unrest and injustices facing our nation. Keeping students and their families updated with information- Senior school leadership, guided by state and local public health guidelines, put school and community health and safety at the forefront of all decision-making. Students and staff were kept updated on recommendations and changes being made at times on a weekly or even daily basis; staff provided added support by disseminating information and processing with students and their families. Engaging in informal virtual activitiesThrough Elective classes, Tik tok, games Instagram Lives and more, our school community was encouraged to come
MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP together to enjoy each other’s company outside of instructional spaces. YouthBuild Philly’s ability to quickly shift and find creative solutions is nothing short of impressive. The way that our school came together in the face of uncertainty is the true definition of what it means to be a “SOLID” community. During the hard times of the past year, our community leaned into our core value of perseverance like never before. Class of 2020 Acceptance March down Broad Street
Moreover, the young people of the Class of 2020 remained equally as enthusiastic about earning their diploma as they were before the pandemic. As the first class in YouthBuild history to navigate the uncharted territory of this past year, they will always be a source of hope and inspiration for our school community. It is because of them that we know the YouthBuild community will be “solid”, no matter what.
The way that our school came together in the face of uncertainty is the true definition of what it means to be a “SOLID” community.
Sincerely, Scott Emerick Executive Director Melanie McCottry Board Chair

YEAR 1
Empower young adults (18-20 year-olds) to develop skills and connect to opportunities by fostering an environment of love, support, and respect for their whole person. In Year One, we focus on cultivating a loving community where students can thrive and feel comfortable showing up as their most authentic selves. Students are supported holistically by a team of staff committed to helping them reach their full potential. Students' learning experiences are enriched with life skills development, job training and community service. During Year One, they focus on academics and hands-on learning while serving as part-time AmeriCorps members. Year One sets the stage for success in future educational and career endeavors.
Courses in Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science are taught by a team of educators who want learning to feel personal for each student. After successfully completing all coursework and requirements, students earn their high school diploma.
Community service is a core part of every student's YouthBuild experience. All students are part-time AmeriCorps members and are required to complete at least 450 hours of service during Year One. Service projects occur through the school year with various community partners.

SOCIAL DISTANCING, BUT ALWAYS CONNECTED IN MARCH 2020 FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUTHBUILD PHILLY HISTORY WE CLOSED THE DOORS OF THE SCHOOL BUILDING DUE TO THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC. ALTHOUGH OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY WAS NOT ABLE TO COME TOGETHER IN PERSON, IT DID NOT PREVENT US STAYING CONNECTED. THROUGH ALL OF THE UNCERTAINTY, OUR COMMUNITY PERSEVERED AND REMAINED SOLID. HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BEGINNING OF OF JOURNEY OF REMOTE LEARNING.
#HUMANSOFYB THE YB MOVEMENT IS SOLID AND WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT. OVER THE YEARS, THE YOUTHBUILD COMMUNITY HAS GROWN TO INCLUDE THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS, ALUMNI, STAFF, BOARD MEMBERS, PARTNERS AND SUPPORTERS. INSPIRED BY @HUMANSOFNY, YB LAUNCHED A #HUMANSOFYB CAMPAIGN TO HIGHLIGHT THE STORIES OF SOME OF THE GREAT INDIVIDUALS THAT MAKE OUR COMMUNITY SO SOLID.
MEET THERESA “I STARTED #YBPHILLY OVER WITH A DIFFERENT VOCATION TRACK AND I AM ON TOP OF MY STUFF MORE THAN I WAS LAST YEAR. I AM A PROJECT MANAGER AND THINGS AT SCHOOL HAVE BEEN GETTING BETTER FOR ME. I DO FEEL LIKE BEING A BLACK WOMAN PLAYS A PART IN IT BECAUSE BEING A SINGLE MOM IS REALLY HARD WHEN YOU DOING EVERYTHING FOR YOU, AND THEN YOU HAVE ANOTHER LIFE TO WORRY ABOUT. THEN YOU ARE STILL IN SCHOOL. THEN YOU TRYING TO START WORKING AS WELL AND THEN TRYING TO MAINTAIN EVERYTHING. BEING A MOTHER HAS CHANGED ME AND MOTIVATES ME. IF I DIDN’T HAVE A CHILD TO WORRY ABOUT I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET MY SCHOOL WORK DONE ON TIME. BEING A MOM IS LIKE, I GOT TO KEEP HIM OCCUPIED SO I CAN DO WHAT I GOT TO DO. IT’S LIKE DOING TWO THINGS AT ONE TIME.” (THERESA, CLASS OF 2020 STUDENT ON BUILDING TRADES VOCATION TRACK AND MOTHER)
MEET FERNANDA
““I AM PROUD OF THE WAY THAT I AM ABLE TO TURN MY WORK IN ON TIME AND I AM NOT LETTING MY LIFE’S SITUATION APART FROM SCHOOL MESS ME UP HERE IN SCHOOL. BEING THE ONLY LATINA STUDENT, I FEEL LIKE MANY PEOPLE EXPECT YOU TO BE STICKING TO YOURSELF AND NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE. THEY THINK YOU’RE QUIET AND THAT YOU’RE NOT OUTGOING, AND WHEN THEY SEE THAT SIDE OF YOU THAT REALLY WANTS TO WORK HARD THEY GET SURPRISED. AS THE ONLY LATINA STUDENT, I FEEL LIKE #YBPHILLY HAS BEEN SUPPORTING ME A LOT WITH ALL OF MY SITUATIONS.” (FERNANDA, CLASS OF 2020 STUDENT ON THE ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION VOCATION TRACK)
#HUMANSOFYB
MEET SIEDDAH
“EVERYONE CAME TOGETHER. PEOPLE COULD’VE STAYED HOME TODAY, BUT INSTEAD THEY CAME AND BROUGHT THEIR KIDS. IT’S NOT LIKE A REGULAR #YBPHILLY DAY. #YBPHILLY IS NO ORDINARY SCHOOL. NO OTHER SCHOOL WOULD DO THIS. THIS IS DIFFERENT. THIS IS LIKE FAMILY. THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO COOK. THEY WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE SOMETHING FOR US. MS. ZURI DON’T HAVE TO BE PLAYING MUSIC. IT COULD JUST BE A REGULAR SCHOOL DAY LIKE ANY OTHER SCHOOL WOULD DO, MAKING THE DAY ABOUT LEARNING OR TESTS. BUT NO, #YBPHILLY ACTUALLY CARES. THEY CARE ABOUT US HAVING FUN. ANY OTHER SCHOOL WOULDN’T CARE. MY DAUGHTER RILEY IS GOING TO SLEEP SO GOOD. SHE WAS PLAYING WITH THE TEACHERS, STAFF AND ALL OF THE OTHER KIDS. THE DAY WAS AMAZING. I’M PROUD OF YOUTHBUILD.” (SIEDDAH & RILEY, #YBPHILLY’S THANKSGIVING FEAST, CLASS OF 2020 STUDENT ON HEALTHCARE TRACK)
MEET DANNYELLE
"THANKSGIVING AT #YBPHILLY IS TONS OF FUN, FULL OF LOVE AND FAMILY. (NEW TO THE TEAM) THIS WAS MY FIRST THANKSGIVING WITH YB, AND I LOVED SEEING EVERYBODY WITH THEIR CHILDREN CELEBRATING. THE FOOD WAS GOOD, AND I DON’T KNOW IF IT WAS MS. ANNETTE’S CANDIED YAMS, BUT SOMEBODY’S YAMS WITH THE MARSHMALLOWS WERE DELICIOUS. I BROUGHT MY CHILDREN AND THEY HAD A GREAT TIME MEETING OTHER KIDS, PLAYING BASKETBALL AND LEARNING HOW TO PLAY PING-PONG. PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER THE LITTLE ONE FROM ME CHASING HIM ALL OVER THE THIRD FLOOR ALL DAY. I THINK THAT FOR #YBPHILLY, THANKSGIVING IS MORE THAN A MEAL. IT’S ABOUT FELLOWSHIP, FRIENDSHIP AND CONNECTION.” (DANNYELLE & MAJI, SENIOR PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT)
JAWAN IS SOLID.
Jawan July came to YouthBuild looking for a supportive community to help him on his journey to his diploma. After hearing great things from his mother and older brother, he was convinced that YouthBuild would be the place where he would find just that. Starting from day one, Jawan felt comforted by the friendly and supportive staff. He instantly felt a true sense of belonging. Jawan grew up fixing houses with his family, and naturally had an interest in real estate which led him to choose the Real Estate construction vocational track. “Once I found out that I could do that for a living I wanted to get into it,” says Jawan. Jawan built an instant rapport with his vocation instructor, Mr. Andre. “Mr. Andre understood me the most. He talked to me about looking at things from a different point of view. Even if you don’t like to do stuff, you still have to learn how to do it. He taught me a lot of things about life that I needed to know,” says Jawan. Support for Jawan didn’t stop at Mr. Andre. “I felt like the teachers and everyone cared there. If you were absent, you would get a call to see if you were fine. At my last school they didn’t do that. If I was absent they didn’t check on us. Mr. Ricky, my friends, and everyone that I was talking to was there to help me,” he explains.
In March 2020, when the pandemic started, YouthBuild closed its building and shifted fully to remote learning. “It hit me kind of hard. We just stopped going to school and switched to online learning. I was still understanding, but I still wanted to be in the YouthBuild building,” recalls Jawan. Despite the desire to learn in-person, Jawan adapted quickly to the “new normal” because - to his surprise - he still felt very connected to the YouthBuild community, even virtually. “I felt comfortable adapting. I told my job how my hours switched, and they were understanding. I kept in touch with Mr. Ricky and Mr. Andre. We were talking every day. I felt comfortable because I had someone guiding me every day,” he says. The pandemic didn’t stop Jawan from his ultimate goal of graduating in YouthBuild’s Class of 2020. He remained engaged and dedicated to his graduation pathway. “I was proud of myself to still be able to manage going to school through all of this. I have a problem learning on my own and trying to understand things on my own. I like to have help. I didn’t have that at my last school, but I got it at YouthBuild,” he says. Jawan - along with 143 of his classmates - were celebrated at YouthBuild Philly’s very first socially distanced graduation ceremony. “I loved it. It was different from any other school. The way that YouthBuild does their graduation is really different,” explains Jawan.
JAWAN IS SOLID.
Currently, Jawan is working as a home health aide to support his family and daughter, Jaleah. “I still want to pursue a career in Real Estate construction. I’m looking to take care of my family. I’m looking to invest and manage some properties down the line,” he says. Jawan attributes much of his success in getting his diploma to the supportive community at YouthBuild. However, Jawan’s resilience, perseverance and ability to navigate uncharted territory are the true guiding factors, and continue to serve as inspiration to the YouthBuild community. Students like Jawan are the real reason why the YouthBuild community is SOLID.

CLASS OF 2020 VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH
"I just want to share a few things that helped me to make it through this school year. For me, it was the support system at YouthBuild. Just having someone who will encourage you, challenge you, motivate you and push you to your limit, and someone who also just believes in you. As for me, I stepped out of my comfort zone, I was coming to school early, staying late and volunteering. Just doing things that I really wouldn’t have done in the past. It’s important to push yourself because you don’t know how far it will take you until you have taken that chance. Something that really helped me along this journey was just the supportive people by my side every step of the way.
Congratulations to the Class of 2020 for all of your achievements this year. Shout out to all my friends and family for having my back throughout this whole journey. Class of 2021 and future applicants, if you want to be successful do what you need to do, so you can be where you want to be.”
