Field trips are better with ice cream

This week the Kindersley playschool kids discovered field trips are better with ice cream. Twice a day on Tuesday and Friday, the playschool groups made their way down the street to pay a visit to Swirl Cafe where each child got to make their very own ice cream.

Co-owner and Operations Manager, Jeff Santos gave the kids a warm welcome, and had all the necessary equipment easily accessible, ready for the children to use. After a few short instructions on how to ‘chop, chop, chop’, the first two kids began making their own rolled ice cream.

With a bit of help from Jeff and their teacher Roxanne Atkinson, the kids began smashing the ice cream and their choice of candies, making the ice cream rolls and placing them in a cup. But the best part of all was eating the ice cream. Yum!

Celebrity Extra

Q:Is it true that “The Resident” was canceled? If so, will Matt Czuchry be in another show soon? I’ve loved him ever since “Gilmore Girls.” — A.I.

A:MattCzuchry, who played Logan Huntzberger opposite Alexis Bledel’s Rory in “Gilmore Girls,” has actually been fortunate — and talented — enough to have three hit series under his belt. After “Gilmore,” he played an attorney on “The Good Wife” and a young physician on “The Resident.” Alas, that last series was canceled after ratings were down 27% (according to Variety Magazine) in its final season.

Czuchry hasn’t remained unemployed for long, having been snatched up by producer Ryan Murphy to star in the next installment of “American Horror Story.” The upcoming season is based on the novel “Delicate Condition” by Danielle Valentine. It’s also being billed as a “feminist update of ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’” which was originally a novel as well — and later a classic film starring Mia Farrow.

Emma Roberts is reportedly playing Czuchry’s wife in the 12th season of “AHS,” and social media star Kim Kardashian will also play a role, details of which are currently under wraps. The premiere date is likely to be sometime in October or November of 2023, on FX. ***

When is the new season of “Severance” starting? I thought it would have happened by now. Are they still filming it? — C.T.

OUTREACH SERVICES

A:Whilea release date hasn’t been announced yet by AppleTV+, producer-director Ben Stiller assures fans that the sophomore season of “Severance” is on “the same really slow schedule we’ve always been on,” with the “same target air date we’ve always had.” But there have been changes behind the scenes. Former “House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon came aboard for season two after original showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman had a falling out.

The core cast, including Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette and John Turturro, are all said to be returning, and new cast members include Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”), Merritt Wever (“Nurse Jackie”) and Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones”).

Q:I’ve loved watching Kristen Bell ever since she starred as “Veronica Mars.” Is she going to have her own TV series again anytime soon? — H.R.

A:It’s hard to fathom that it’s been 20 years since Kristen Bell starred as teenage sleuth “Veronica Mars” on UPN (which later became the CW Network), but she’s had quite an impressive career since then. She went on to play a completely different character in the movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and then earned her biggest paycheck by lending her voice and vocals in the Disney blockbuster hit films “Frozen” and “Frozen II.”

She demonstrated the most range as the lead of another television series, NBC’s “The Good Place.” She also squeezed in a limited Netflix series, “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window,” before recently announcing another project with the streaming service. Next up for Bell on Netflix is a yet-to-be-named comedy series opposite Adam Brody (“The O.C.”) with a promising pedigree — it’s being produced by “Modern Family” creator Steven Levitan.

KCS students “Flush Away Cancer”

Early Wednesday morning, May 10th, three bright pink toilets decorated three different yards in the town of Kindersley. This is due to the work of students from Kindersley Composite School (KCS). The school’s SLC began their annual “Flush Away Cancer” fundraiser, which they have been promoting since 2018.

Since that time they have raised over $20,000 for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency through their cancer fundraiser. This year they added to that total once again.

Residents watched as three pink toilets made their way around the town on a various lawns. Even if you didn’t have a pink toilet displayed on your lawn, you were still invited to make a tax deductible donation to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, by contacting the high school.

Cameco’s Westinghouse announces 300 megawatt small modular reactor design

Twice last week, SaskEnergy set new daily natural gas usage records, and we can thank Alberta for most of our supply

plant, very similar to Chinook, is under construction at Moose Jaw.

Not only was Saskatchewan setting electrical consumption records during the cold snap of last week of December, we also set two consecutive natural gas consumption records, too.

Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania

– Westinghouse, which is now 49 per cent owned by Saskatchewan-based Cameco, announced its major entry into the small modular reactor (SMR) race.

According to SaskEnergy in a Dec. 31 release, “Extreme cold weather across Saskatchewan this week resulted in record-breaking natural gas demand in the province. On December 28 and 29, natural gas consumption surpassed the previous daily record of 1.57 petajoules (PJ) which was set in February 2021.

looking at nine. Westinghouse said there are “dozens pending.”

All of this added natural gas-fired power generation has, in turn, driven higher usage of natural gas during times of high electrical consumption.

The Crown noted that increased demand from SaskEnergy’s industrial customers, including natural gas use for power production, was the main driver of this week’s record-setting consumption.

On May 4, Westinghouse announced its AP300 small modular reactor, which will have a 300 megawatt (electricity), or MWe output, which puts it on par with the General Electric Hitachi BWRX-300 model that is starting to see substantial adoption around the world (including SaskPower).

“A new daily record of 1.62 PJ was set on December 28 and broken again on December 29 with total system delivery of 1.64 PJ. Delivery numbers for December 30 and 31 are not yet finalized, but are also expected to exceed 1.6 PJ.”

The natural gas records coincided with record power consumption. On Dec. 29, SaskPower set another record in power consumption for Saskatchewan. At 5:27 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2021, Saskatchewan homes and businesses reached 3,868 megawatts (MW) in power use, according to the Crown corporation. The previous record of 3,792 MW was reached four years ago to the day, on Dec. 29, 2017.

Westinghouse and General Electric, between them, have designed and built most of the reactors in the United States, as well as for the United States Navy’s submarine and surface fleets.

Saskatchewan’s power production has increasingly shifted from coal to natural gas as a fuel source. In December, Boundary Dam Unit 4, a coal-fired generating unit, was retired, reducing the Boundary Dam Power Station to 672 megawatts capacity. On the natural gas side, Saskatchewan has seen the construction of several new natural gas-fired power plants. They include the baseload North Battleford Power Station (289 megawatts), Yellowhead Power Station peaking plant (also at North Battleford, 135 megawatts), the baseload Chinook Power Station at Swift Current (353 megawatts) and peaking plant Spy Hill Power Station (89 megawatts). Another 353 megawatt baseload

The AP300 is based on the AP1000 reactor. “The AP300 is the only SMR truly based on a deployed, operating and advanced nuclear plant, the Westinghouse AP1000® reactor,” Westinghouse said.

Currently, four units utilizing AP1000 technology are operating in China, setting performance records, Westinghouse said. Six more are under construction in China and one AP1000 reactor is operating at Plant Vogtle in Georgia while a second nears completion.

Poland is also looking at building up to six AP1000 units, and Ukraine is

“The AP300 SMR, 300MWe (900MWth – megawatts thermal), is based on the licensed and operating AP1000 pressurized light water technology that has demonstrated industry leading reliability,” according to Westinghouse. “The AP 300 SMR utilizes identical technology, including design and licensing methodologies, major equipment and components passive safety systems, proven fuel and supply chain.

SaskEnergy said it measures daily natural gas consumption for the 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. A PJ is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million gigajoules (GJ) of natural gas. An average Saskatchewan home consumes about 100 GJ of natural gas each year.

“SaskEnergy’s natural gas system design can accommodate additional capacity to manage increased consumption even on peak days,” SaskEnergy president and CEO Ken From said in a release. “Throughout the year, SaskEnergy employees inspect, maintain and enhance the system to support safe and reliable natural gas delivery in all weather conditions. In addition, employees monitor the system 24 hours a day to ensure sufficient system capacity to meet customer demand across the province.”

This province is now largely dependent on neighbouring Alberta to fulfill roughly two-thirds of our natural gas needs.

When natural gas prices took a tumble roughly 14 years ago, Saskatchewan’s domestic gas production fell off a cliff. Targeted gas drilling went essentially extinct, with next to no gas-specific wells being drilled in this province for most of the past decade. Our domestic gas production is now largely based on associated gas production that comes with oil production. As a result, Saskatchewan went from being a net gas exporter for the period of 1988 to 2009 to a net importer that year.

The AP300 SMR design utilizes Westinghouse’s proven Gen III+ advanced technology, which has regulatory approval in the U.S., Great Britain and China, as well as compliance with European Utility Requirements (EUR) standards for nuclear power plants. This brings licensing advantages and substantially reduces delivery risk for customers in the utility, oil & gas and industrial space. Design certification is anticipated by 2027, followed by site specific licensing and construction on the first unit toward the end of the decade.

“The AP300 is the only small modular reactor offering available that is based on deployed, operating and advanced reactor technology,” said Patrick Fragman, president and CEO of West-

LR RANGER HOLDINGS LTD.

Screen capture/YouTube Westinghouse inghouse. “The launch of the AP300 SMR rounds out the Westinghouse portfolio of reactor technology, allowing us to deliver on the full needs of our customers globally, with a clear line of sight on schedule of delivery, and economics.”

The release noted, “The AP300 SMR offers reliable, safe and clean electricity, as well as additional applications for district heating and water desalination. Its fast load-follow capabilities make it ideally suited for integration with renewable resources. It will also pave the way toward the hydrogen economy by enabling cost-effective, clean production of hydrogen integrated with the plant.”

World Nuclear News reported, “In a press conference following the announcement, Westinghouse also said the footprint of the AP300 would be about 25 per cent of the area of a football (soccer) pitch, with a target cost per unit of $US1 billion.”

“Westinghouse is a world leader in delivering nuclear fuel. AP300 SMR utilizes our robust fuel design that incorporates a variety of proven and advanced fuel features, and a four-year refueling cycle.

These reactors are being designed to last longer than an 80 year life cycle.

However, remember to consume this giant chocolate truffle in moderation due to its high calorie and fat content.

GIANT DARK CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE

This easy, no-bake truffle has only three ingredients.

Next, we make ganache. This is so easy you’ll make ganache all the time. Place a bag of chips into a mixing bowl. Heat the heavy cream in the microwave until it simmers, between 45 and 60 seconds. Pour the hot cream over the chips and let that sit for five minutes. Now stir the mixture until completely smooth. As you begin, there may be a moment when you shake your fist at the sky and yell, “Curse you, Patti Diamond!” because it looks like the curdled separated mess will never come together. Just keep stirring. I promise it will

For an extra special touch, you could decorate this truffle with edible gold leaf found at craft stores that carry cake decorating supplies, or online retailers that sell baking supplies. And don’t forget to include a heartfelt message of love and appreciation. So, this year, instead of buying expensive Godiva chocolates, why not make your own delicious “Go Diva” truffle at home? It’s the perfect way to spoil the chocolate-loving special mother figure in your life.

Bright Idea

Eco-activist Rob Greenfield has stopped using toilet paper, and he wants you to, too. People reported on May 4 that Greenfield is touring the country as part of his Grow Your Own Toilet Paper Initiative, introducing people to the blue spur flower plant. The leaves are “soft as can be,” he said. “They’re durable. I call them the Charmin of the garden.” Greenfield sets up a compost toilet in a busy area and gives his spiel: “Hey, did you know you can grow your own toilet paper? I want to show people that another way is possible. We just buy (toilet paper) at the store and we never think twice about it.” Each leaf is about the size of a piece of toilet paper, and the plant supplies an abundance of them. They can’t be flushed, but they can be thrown in the trash or buried in the yard. Passersby who get sucked in will also hear Greenfield’s views on composting human waste rather than using flush toilets.

Field Report

Nina Jochnowitz was alerted on April 26 by a fellow citizen in Old Bridge, New Jersey, about an odd deposit near a stream, NJ.com reported. When Jochnowitz investigated, she found 500 pounds of cooked pasta -- spaghetti, ziti and elbow macaroni -- dumped along a 25-foot-wide area. She posted photos on Facebook and alerted the town administrator and public works department, and two days later, the carb-y mess had been cleaned up. Jochnowitz pointedly remarked that Old Bridge is the only town in the county without bulk garbage pickup. Days later, the mystery of the pasta’s origin was solved: A man moving out of his mother’s home after her death discovered a stockpile of dry noodles and allegedly dumped them there. A weekend’s worth of heavy rains softened the pasta, making it look as if it had been cooked. Old Bridge’s mayor declared no harm, no foul, and the few stray noodles left on the ground are the only sign of the great pasta caper.

Murphy’s Laws of Moving

No matter how many boxes you have, you will never have enough.

The more your friends promise to help, the more likely it is they will be deathly ill or out of town the weekend you are moving.

Whatever it is that you need, it is always in the bottom of a box that has already been taped shut.

Now that you are moving and no longer need it, you will always find something you have been looking for for years.

The tape, the scissors, the markers and the screwdriver all know how to play hide ‘n’ seek.

The thing that gets broken will always be an irreplaceable antique heirloomnever something cheap that you didn’t like anyway.

Regardless of long the drought has been going on, it will always rain on moving day.

You will always lose your valuable papers, your car keys, the remote control or the phone.

If you stay up all night packing to be ready for the movers, they will be late.

No matter how large the new place is, it will shrink before you move in.

Say these three times fast ….

Imagine an imaginary menagerie manager managing an imaginary menagerie.

If you notice this notice, you will notice that this notice is not worth noticing.

Betty bought butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the bitter butter better.

If you must cross a course cross cow across a crowded cow crossing, cross the cross coarse cow across the crowded cow crossing carefully.

Brisk brave brigadiers brandished broad bright blades, blunderbusses, and bludgeons—balancing them badly.
