LOGAN FERLAND, TALKS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF DAILY READING
By Joan Janzen
The Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation understands we all have a role to play when it comes to get kids reading! The Rider Reading Program is a Foundation community initiative that encourages students to read together and at the same time, provides them an opportunity to meet one of their favourite players!
Hometown favourite and left tackle, Logan Ferland, visited Kindersley on Monday, March 13th. He was promoting the Rider Reading Program at Westberry Elementary School throughout the day and, later that evening, was available for photos at A&W.
Logan was pumped about returning to his hometown, where he could read to all the kids at Westberry. And the kids were excited, too and couldn’t wait to tell him that their parents said they personally knew Logan.
Although teachers promote the importance of reading every day, it’s a whole different ball game when the same message comes from a Roughrider team member. Logan not only read to the students, but as a former Westberry student, he talked about the importance of daily reading.
Logan was there to answer any students’ questions, sign autographs, and visit with his former teacher. Later that night, he hung out with Rooty, the A&W bear, who stood outside the restaurant, waving customers inside to take their photo with Logan.

Q:How is Bruce Willis doing since he was diagnosed with a neurological disorder? I’ve enjoyed his work ever since seeing him in “Moonlighting,” with Cybill Shepherd. — P.I.
A:It’s
hard to believe it’s been 38 years since Bruce Willis debuted as charming P.I. David Addison Jr., opposite his boss, former model Maddie Hayes, played by Cybill Shepherd. The two quarreled both on screen and off, but their chemistry was a hit with viewers, making the show last five seasons. Willis went on to be a mega movie star in the “Die Hard” franchise, among other films, but last March, it was announced that he was retiring from acting at age 67 after being diagnosed with a cognitive disorder called aphasia.
Sadly, in February of this year, his wife, Emma Heming Willis, announced that his condition has progressed and that they now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia. Fortunately, he has a wonderful support system that includes his ex-wife, actress Demi Moore, and their children, along with his two daughters with Emma. ***

I only recently started watching the family saga on HBO. What drew me in was the opening theme music. Is it an original piece for the show?
A:Whencomposer Nicholas Britell was interviewed on the “CBS News Sunday Morning” show, he said that when he was a young boy, he asked his mother for piano lessons after hearing the theme to the movie “Chariots of Fire.” This didn’t lead him down a straight path to Hollywood, however. He worked on Wall Street for a while before quitting, to chase his dream.
We now have established Satellite Offices in two surrounding communities. On Tuesday, there is a counsellor in Kerrobert and on Wednesday, there is a counsellor in Eston.
He told CBS he wanted the theme about a dysfunctional wealthy family to sound a little off: “The pianos are out of tune with each other. The strings are a little bit off. This should feel kind of like something’s a little wrong here.” His instincts were right, and it led to him winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
Before being hired for “Succession,” he already had an excellent reputation in the industry, having earned Oscar nomi-
nations for three different movie scores: “Moonlight,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Don’t Look Up.”
The fourth and final season of “Succession” returns to HBO on March 26. In the meantime, you can hear more of Britell’s creations with the Disney+ series “Andor” and in the upcoming live-action film “Mufasa: The Lion King.” ***
Q:What happened to Taylor Kinney on “Chicago Fire”? Did he leave the show? — G.M.
A:On a recent episode of the hit NBC series “Chicago Fire,” it was mentioned that Taylor Kinney’s character, Lt. Kelly Severide, had gone to Alabama for arson investigation training. Off-screen, the actor has chosen to take a hiatus from the show for personal reasons. He’s still in the credits, though, and Capt. Tom Van Meter (Tim Hopper) assured Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) that Severide isn’t “planning a transfer.” Kinney has been with the show since 2012, so hopefully, he just needs a little R&R and will return before the season ends.

Fun facts about St. Patrick
He wasn’t Irish. If you’re not familiar with the story of St. Patrick, you may not be aware that he is not in fact Irish. St. Patrick is British. It’s believed that he was born in either Wales or Scotland. This is arguably the most frequently misbelieved of the many facts about St. Patrick.
When he was born. St. Patrick was born in Roman-Britain (Britain was under Roman rule for 350 years) circa 386 A.D. He didn’t arrive in Ireland until 433.
When he died. St. Patrick died in 461 in Saul, County Down, at the fine old age of (roughly) 75.
He was abducted at 16. This is another of the lesser known St. Patrick facts that I had never really heard. St. Patrick was abducted at the age of 16 and brought to Northern Ireland as a slave. He was forced to tend to sheep for 6 years in the mountains.
His remains are believed to be at Down Cathedral. It’s believed that the remains of St. Patrick are buried at Down Cathedral in County Down. This magnificent Cathedral is a Church of Ireland cathedral and it’s found on the site of a Benedictine Monastery.
His name wasn’t Patrick. One of the more surprising St. Patrick’s Day facts revolves around his name. So, apparently ‘Patrick’ is a name that he picked up along the way at some point. St. Patrick’s real name was ‘Maewyn Succat’. The best of luck pronouncing that!
He didn’t banish snakes. For as far back as I can remember, I was told that St. Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland. However, there were never snakes in Ireland…It’s believed that the St. Patrick snakes link is all about symbolism. In Judeo-Christian tradition, snakes are the symbol of evil. It’s said that St. Patrick banishing the snakes from Ireland represents his fight to bring the word of God to Ireland.
He escaped Ireland by boat. According to St. Patrick’s Confession (a book that is said to have been written by St. Patrick), God told Patrick to flee his captures and make his way to the coast where a boat would be waiting to take him back home.

Twice last week, SaskEnergy set new daily natural gas usage records, and we can thank Alberta for most of our supply
Vermilion Energy Inc. announced the sale of approximately 5,500 boepd of light oil production in southeast Saskatchewan on March 8.
BY BRIAN ZINCHUK brian.zinchuk@pipelineonline.ca
That’s roughly half of its production in Saskatchewan. For 2022, Vermillion averaged 11,777 barrels of oil per day.
Not only was Saskatchewan setting electrical consumption records during the cold snap of last week of December, we also set two consecutive natural gas consumption records, too.
completed $500 million of strategic acquisitions, despite incurring $406 million of realized hedging losses and $223 million of temporary windfall taxes.
plant, very similar to Chinook, is under construction at Moose Jaw.
According to SaskEnergy in a Dec. 31 release, “Extreme cold weather across Saskatchewan this week resulted in record-breaking natural gas demand in the province. On December 28 and 29, natural gas consumption surpassed the previous daily record of 1.57 petajoules (PJ) which was set in February 2021.
The announcement came as part of the company’s 2022 year-end financials. The Saskatchewan sale in a way paired up with an acquisition in Ireland as well as gas development in British Columbia.
“A new daily record of 1.62 PJ was set on December 28 and broken again on December 29 with total system delivery of 1.64 PJ. Delivery numbers for December 30 and 31 are not yet finalized, but are also expected to exceed 1.6 PJ.”
The natural gas records coincided with record power consumption. On Dec. 29, SaskPower set another record in power consumption for Saskatchewan. At 5:27 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2021, Saskatchewan homes and businesses reached 3,868 megawatts (MW) in power use, according to the Crown corporation. The previous record of 3,792 MW was reached four years ago to the day, on Dec. 29, 2017.
Saskatchewan’s power production has increasingly shifted from coal to natural gas as a fuel source. In December, Boundary Dam Unit 4, a coal-fired generating unit, was retired, reducing the Boundary Dam Power Station to 672 megawatts capacity. On the natural gas side, Saskatchewan has seen the construction of several new natural gas-fired power plants. They include the baseload North Battleford Power Station (289 megawatts), Yellowhead Power Station peaking plant (also at North Battleford, 135 megawatts), the baseload Chinook Power Station at Swift Current (353 megawatts) and peaking plant Spy Hill Power Station (89 megawatts). Another 353 megawatt baseload
In the release, Vermilion said, “Subsequent to year-end, we signed an agreement to sell certain assets in southeast Saskatchewan. The assets are comprised of approximately 5,500 boepd of noncore light oil production spread across the greater Arcola and Queensdale areas of southeast Saskatchewan. Total cash consideration is $225 million, before closing adjustments. Following our entry into the Montney, these mature assets were unlikely to attract capital. The divestment was part of our strategy to re-position Vermilion for long term success by high-grading our North American inventory, reducing unit cost and accelerating the timeline of achieving our debt reduction targets. The transaction has an effective date of September 1, 2022 and is expected to close in March 2023. The net proceeds will be used to pay down our revolving credit facility.”
The purchaser was not disclosed.
In the message to shareholders, Vermillion said, “In 2022, we delivered on our strategic priorities and continued to re-position Vermilion for long term success. Due to the robust free cash flow generation of our international and diversified assets, we reduced net debt by $300 million and
All of this added natural gas-fired power generation has, in turn, driven higher usage of natural gas during times of high electrical consumption.
The Crown noted that increased demand from SaskEnergy’s industrial customers, including natural gas use for power production, was the main driver of this week’s record-setting consumption.
SaskEnergy said it measures daily natural gas consumption for the 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. A PJ is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million gigajoules (GJ) of natural gas. An average Saskatchewan home consumes about 100 GJ of natural gas each year.
“To increase our exposure to premium priced European gas, we progressed the high rate of return Irish Corrib consolidation deal, which we plan to close on March 31, 2023. In Canada, our Montney acquisition increased the depth and quality of our North American inventory. With lower debt and an even stronger asset base, we announced our return of capital framework and returned over $100 million to our shareholders with the reinstatement of a quarterly dividend in Q1 2022 and commencement of a share buyback program in Q3 2022.
“SaskEnergy’s natural gas system design can accommodate additional capacity to manage increased consumption even on peak days,” SaskEnergy president and CEO Ken From said in a release. “Throughout the year, SaskEnergy employees inspect, maintain and enhance the system to support safe and reliable natural gas delivery in all weather conditions. In addition, employees monitor the system 24 hours a day to ensure sufficient system capacity to meet customer demand across the province.”
This province is now largely dependent on neighbouring Alberta to fulfill roughly two-thirds of our natural gas needs.
“We exited the year with net debt of $1.3 billion, or 0.8 times trailing FFO, which is less than half the leverage ratio from the prior year. These results translated into a total shareholder return in excess of 50 per cent including share price appreciation and dividends. We remain committed to reducing debt even further, which will allow for increasing return of capital to our shareholders in the future. Our next debt target remains $1.0 billion of net debt, which we anticipate achieving by the end of 2023 or early 2024, depending on commodity prices.”
When natural gas prices took a tumble roughly 14 years ago, Saskatchewan’s domestic gas production fell off a cliff. Targeted gas drilling went essentially extinct, with next to no gas-specific wells being drilled in this province for most of the past decade. Our domestic gas production is now largely based on associated gas production that comes with oil production. As a result, Saskatchewan went from being a net gas exporter for the period of 1988 to 2009 to a net importer that year.
The company’s production remained largely flat year-over-year. Production in Q4 2022 averaged 85,450 boepd, representing a one per cent increase over Q3 2022. Annual average production was 85,187 boepd, which is consistent with 2021 production levels.
During the fourth quarter, Vermilion’s production was impacted by unplanned

downtime in Australia, cold weather and third-party downtime in North America, and the delayed startup of its six-well Montney pad in Alberta.
Outlook and Guidance Update
The Corrib acquisition in Ireland has a planned close on March 31, 2023. Vermilion estimates a net cash payment of approximately $200 million at close and expect the acquisition to payout in approximately one year, based on forward commodity prices. This acquisition is expected to add approximately 7,000 boepd of European gas production, which was reflected from March 31, 2023 onwards in the company’s original production guidance of 87,000 to 91,000 boepd. Taking into account the southeast Saskatchewan asset sale and Australia downtime, Vermilion is revising its 2023 production guidance to 82,000 to 86,000 boepd. The company’s 2023 capital budget remains unchanged at $570 million as there was minimal capital allocated to the assets being sold.
“Our Q1 2023 drilling program is off to a strong start and is expected to deliver higher production in Canada during the first quarter, however extended maintenance downtime in Australia will result in lower corporate production in Q1 2023,” the company said. “As a result of the Australia downtime and the southeast Saskatchewan asset sale, Q1 2023 corporate production is expected to be in the range of 80,000 to 82,000 boepd.” Q4 2022 Operations Review – North America
Production from Vermilion’s North American operations averaged 58,499 boepd in Q4 2022, an increase of 2 per

cent from the prior quarter primarily due to new well production from its Montney assets in Canada and a full quarter contribution from its 2022 drilling program in the United States.
Vermilion said, “In Saskatchewan, we drilled seven (5.5 net) wells, completed ten (6.9 net) wells, and brought on production twelve (6.7 net) wells in southeast Saskatchewan. No drilling or completion activity occurred in the United States in the fourth quarter as the team focused on preparation for the 2023 drilling program which will commence in Q2 2023.”
“In Alberta, we drilled twelve (10.6 net), completed ten (8.2 net), and brought on production seven (6.9 net) Mannville liquids rich gas wells, while at Mica we drilled one (1.0 net) well and brought on production the six (6.0 net) wells from our first Montney pad. The six well Montney pad was brought on production in late November and saw rates increase through the balance of the year as the wells cleaned up. Total production from our Montney assets averaged 7,500 boe/d during the month of December. In December, drilling commenced on a follow up threewell pad in Alberta which is expected to be completed and tied in during the first half of 2023. During the fourth quarter of 2022 we received three permits in British Columbia, including one of the permits to construct a 16,000 boe/d battery and to drill a multi-well pad in British Columbia. We also signed agreements to acquire 11 sections of adjacent land at Mica, further consolidating our contiguous land base and increasing our Tier 1 inventory.”

An Irish Twist on Potato Pancakes for St. Patrick’s Day
I came across an old Irish rhyme that goes: “Boxty on the griddle, boxty in the pan, if you can’t make boxty, you’ll never get a man!” And thought, What? I don’t need another man, but this “boxty” thing intrigues me.
2 pounds (6 to 8) russet potatoes
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for water
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup whole milk
1 large egg
3 to 4 tablespoons butter
Peel half of the potatoes and cut into 1-inch pieces. Place them into a medium saucepan, cover with salted water by an inch, then bring to a simmer. Cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes. Drain the cooked potatoes, mash until smooth and place into a large mixing bowl.
occasionally, and cook until golden, about 8 minutes per batch. Make sure you get the edges browned and crispy, because they are to die for. Place cooked boxties on a baking sheet in the preheated oven to keep warm as you repeat with the remaining patties, adding butter to the pan as needed.

• On March 30, 2011, Peru welcomed the return of hundreds of Inca artifacts with a lavish ceremony after they’d been out of the country for nearly a century. The items were taken from the ancient site of Machu Picchu and held at Yale University, prompting the Peruvian government to launch an extended campaign against the school, insisting the artifacts had only been on loan.
So, this year I unearthed and reworked an old favorite, Irish Boxty, the holy grail of pancakes for potato lovers! They’re made with a mix of mashed and grated potatoes. They’re crispy on the edges, pillowy and creamy in the middle and exactly the kind of peasant food we love — hearty, economical and endlessly versatile.
Boxties can be served sweet or savory, just as you might serve biscuits alongside a meal. They can be enjoyed simply with butter or sprinkled with sugar, as a side dish for any meal, or as a base for wonderful toppings.
Our boxties are served with sausage and topped with a buttery, boozy mushroom mixture called Drunken Mushrooms. In honor of St. Paddy’s Day, I added a handful of green spinach and used Irish whisky to deglaze the pan, but you could use other liquors or even just a splash of broth.
Meanwhile, as those potatoes are cooking, preheat oven to 200 F. Peel the remaining potatoes and grate with a box grater. Wrap the raw grated potatoes in a kitchen towel and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Add the grated potatoes to the bowl with the mashed potatoes. Add the flour, salt, baking powder, pepper, milk and egg, stirring until incorporated.
Heat a skillet over medium heat, add butter. Place minced garlic in the skillet and saute for 1 minute. Add the mushrooms and saute, stirring frequently, until mushrooms are cooked through and golden. Add liquor of choice or broth, should you prefer sober mushrooms. Add thyme and stir, letting the liquor evaporate. Add spinach, if using. Stir to wilt the spinach. Serve with boxty. While I can’t guarantee you’ll get a man, I guarantee you’re in for a treat. This Irish Boxty recipe is simple, delicious and makes the best potato pancakes. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ***

Wearin’ Of The Green
Wearin’ of the green is considered an act of paying tribute to Ireland. It is said that it also brings good luck, especially when worn on St. Patrick’s Day. Many long years ago, playful Irish children gave birth to the tradition of pinching those forgetting to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day & the tradition is still practiced today. Green is the national color of Ireland & is symbolic of the Emerald Isle’s lush green landscape. It also represents another of Ireland’s national symbols, the shamrock, in honor of their patron saint. During the end of the 4th century, the shamrock was used by Saint Patrick in his missionary work to convert the people of Ireland to Christianity. He chose the three leafed shape of the shamrock to use as a symbolic representation of the Holy Trinity. The shamrock’s shape also resembled the shape of a cross.
An Irishman was flustered not being able to find a parking space in a large mall’s parking lot.
“Lord, “he prayed, “I can’t stand this. If you open a space up for me, I swear I’ll give up drinking me whiskey, and I promise to go to church every Sunday.” Suddenly, the clouds parted and the sun shone on an empty parking spot. Without hesitation, the man said, “Never mind, I found one.”
An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut.
The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest’s breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, “Sir, have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the priest. The trooper says, “Then why do I smell wine?” The priest looks at the bottle and says, “Good Lord! He’s done it again!”
