The Right Choice

My 16-year-old brother, Ryan, was out late with friends one night. Suddenly he realized it was Father’s Day and he had neglected to buy a card for our dad. After much searching, Ryan located an open store, but was disappointed to find only two cards left on a picked-over rack. Selecting one, he brought it home and, somewhat sheepishly, presented it to our father.

Upon opening it, Dad read this message: “You’ve been like a father to me.” He looked at Ryan, puzzled.

“Well, Dad,” Ryan tried to explain, “it was either that or the card that said, ‘Now that I’m a father too!’”

Thanks for the Soda, Pop!

Before I took the old family car to college, my father loaded the trunk with soft-drink bottles filled with oil, coolant and transmission fluid. Sure enough, my car overheated. Scolding myself for not listening to my father’s instructions, I looked at the engine and saw how well he knew me. The oil cap was labeled Dr Pepper, the transmission stick, Coke, and the empty coolant container, Diet Pepsi. I finished the trip safely.

Say What, Dad?

Our Gen-X daughter, Christie, made my husband a Father’s Day card entitled “Things My Dad Would Never Say.”

Such as:

“Can you turn up that music?”

“Go ahead and take my truck. Here’s 50 bucks for gas.”

“I LOVE your tattoo. We should both get new ones.”

Q:

What is next for the great Jeremy Strong now that “Succession” is over? — C.L.

A:Before landing his Emmywinning role of Kendall Strong on the recently concluded HBO series “Succession,” actor Jeremy Strong had several film credits under his belt. It wouldn’t be surprising if he was aiming for an Oscar next. But before that, he’s headed to Broadway, so perhaps a Tony will be awarded first. In an adaption of Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play “An Enemy of the People,” he’ll play a whistleblower. Strong, who grew up admiring the work of Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman, is no stranger to the stage. He’s studied at Yale and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. In 2008, he appeared on Broadway alongside Frank Langella in “A Man for All Seasons.” Look for “An Enemy of the People” to open in early 2024.

Q:Is “The Winchesters” returning for a second season? I heard a rumor it was canceled, but that the network changed its mind. — L.E.

A:Surprisingly, “The Winchesters,” a prequel series to the wildly successful series“Supernatural,” didn’t wow audiences like its predecessor. The CW network canceled it and other promising shows because of a retooling of its business plan; shows like “Kung Fu,” a reboot of the 1970s series of the same name, and “Walker Independence” have also been given the axe. Meanwhile, “Walker,” which stars Jared Padalecki, who previously co-headlined the above-mentioned “Supernatural,” will be back on the CW for its fourth season. According to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, ever since CW was bought by Nexstar, it’s earned the unflattering nicknames “Castoffs Wanted” and “Curated Wreckage.” Most of its content will soon consist of shows that originally aired in other countries, such as the Canadian series “The Spencer Sisters,” with Lea Thompson (“Caroline in the City”), and “Sullivan’s Crossing,” with Chad Michael Murray (“One Tree Hill”). Other programming this fall includes unscripted shows that previously streamed elsewhere, like Netflix’s

“Down to Earth With Zac Efron.” Perhaps “The Winchesters” will be saved by another network or streamer once the WGA Writers Strike is resolved, but for now, consider the show a one-and-done. ***

Q:Whatever happened to “The Partridge Family” actor Danny Bonaduce? He was everywhere in the early 2000s, but I haven’t heard anything about him lately. — K.E.

A:The 63-year-old former child star has been busy co-hosting a morning radio show in Seattle for the past 11 years. However, he recently had to take a leave of absence to undergo brain surgery. According to Entertainment Weekly, Bonaduce has had a mysterious neurological issue for more than a year, saying a doctor finally diagnosed him with hydrocephalus, which is when fluid builds up in the brain. Bonaduce admits he’s done “so many stupid things on reality TV,” including celebrity boxing, that could have contributed to his brain injury; however, he can’t pinpoint the exact cause.

Watch the Wash, Dad…

I decided to make myself useful and do a load of the family laundry. When I took the clothes out of the machine, I discovered — to my dismay — that I had also washed the watch my wife had given me while we were dating. “Don’t expect me to replace it,” she said later with an obvious lack of sympathy. By the time Father’s Day rolled around, however, she had relented and gave me a beautiful new watch. Attached was a note with this stipulation: “DRY-CLEAN ONLY!”

Father’s Day was near when I brought my three-year-old son, Tyler, to the card store. Inside, I showed him the cards for dads and told him to pick one. When I looked back, Tyler was picking up one card after another, opening them up and quickly shoving them back into slots, every which way. “Tyler, what are you doing?” I asked. “Haven’t you found a nice card for Daddy yet?”

“No,” he replied. “I’m looking for one with money in it.”

Saturn is one of Saskatchewan’s fastest growing oil companies

Twice last week, SaskEnergy set new daily natural gas usage records, and we can thank Alberta for most of our supply

Not only was Saskatchewan setting electrical consumption records during the cold snap of last week of December, we also set two consecutive natural gas consumption records, too.

CALGARY –The Jeffersons (remember them?) may have been movin’ on up, to a deluxe apartment in the sky, but Saturn Oil & Gas just pulled off a similar move of its own.

According to SaskEnergy in a Dec. 31 release, “Extreme cold weather across Saskatchewan this week resulted in record-breaking natural gas demand in the province. On December 28 and 29, natural gas consumption surpassed the previous daily record of 1.57 petajoules (PJ) which was set in February 2021.

One of Saskatchewan’s fastest growing oil companies in recent years, Saturn Oil & Gas Inc. has increased its land holdings and production tremendously in southeast Saskatchewan. And now it has received approval from the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) to graduate the listing of its common shares to the main board of the TSX.

“A new daily record of 1.62 PJ was set on December 28 and broken again on December 29 with total system delivery of 1.64 PJ. Delivery numbers for December 30 and 31 are not yet finalized, but are also expected to exceed 1.6 PJ.”

The natural gas records coincided with record power consumption. On Dec. 29, SaskPower set another record in power consumption for Saskatchewan. At 5:27 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2021, Saskatchewan homes and businesses reached 3,868 megawatts (MW) in power use, according to the Crown corporation. The previous record of 3,792 MW was reached four years ago to the day, on Dec. 29, 2017.

Saskatchewan’s power production has increasingly shifted from coal to natural gas as a fuel source. In December, Boundary Dam Unit 4, a coal-fired generating unit, was retired, reducing the Boundary Dam Power Station to 672 megawatts capacity. On the natural gas side, Saskatchewan has seen the construction of several new natural gas-fired power plants. They include the baseload North Battleford Power Station (289 megawatts), Yellowhead Power Station peaking plant (also at North Battleford, 135 megawatts), the baseload Chinook Power Station at Swift Current (353 megawatts) and peaking plant Spy Hill Power Station (89 megawatts). Another 353 megawatt baseload

Saturn said in a press release on June 13 it expects the common shares to commence trading under the symbol “SOIL” on the TSX on June 15, 2023, at which time trading on the TSX Venture Exchange will cease. No action is required to be taken by Saturn shareholders. The company’s listed warrants (expiring July 7, 2023 and March 10, 2025, respectively) will also transition to the TSX.

Now we’re up in the big leagues, gettin’ our turn at bat

plant, very similar to Chinook, is under construction at Moose Jaw.

All of this added natural gas-fired power generation has, in turn, driven higher usage of natural gas during times of high electrical consumption.

The Crown noted that increased demand from SaskEnergy’s industrial customers, including natural gas use for power production, was the main driver of this week’s record-setting consumption.

SaskEnergy said it measures daily natural gas consumption for the 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. A PJ is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million gigajoules (GJ) of natural gas. An average Saskatchewan home consumes about 100 GJ of natural gas each year.

“SaskEnergy’s natural gas system design can accommodate additional capacity to manage increased consumption even on peak days,” SaskEnergy president and CEO Ken From said in a release. “Throughout the year, SaskEnergy employees inspect, maintain and enhance the system to support safe and reliable natural gas delivery in all weather conditions. In addition, employees monitor the system 24 hours a day to ensure sufficient system capacity to meet customer demand across the province.”

“The graduation to the TSX, Canada’s most senior stock exchange, is an exciting achievement for our company” said John Jeffrey, CEO of Saturn, in a release. “The hard work of our staff and support of shareholders over the past 24 months has made it possible to rapidly grow into a company that meets the stringent listing requirements of the TSX. We anticipate that trading on the TSX will provide us with additional visibility in the marketplace, provide our shareholders will additional liquidity and allow access to a broader and more diverse range of international and institutional investors.”

This province is now largely dependent on neighbouring Alberta to fulfill roughly two-thirds of our natural gas needs.

Wildfire update

When natural gas prices took a tumble roughly 14 years ago, Saskatchewan’s domestic gas production fell off a cliff. Targeted gas drilling went essentially extinct, with next to no gas-specific wells being drilled in this province for most of the past decade. Our domestic gas production is now largely based on associated gas production that comes with oil production. As a result, Saskatchewan went from being a net gas exporter for the period of 1988 to 2009 to a net importer that year.

Saturn also announced that it has restored over 90 per cent of the estimated 10,000 boepd (60 per cent oil and NGLs) of production that was curtailed since May 4, 2023 as a result of the wildfires in Alberta. We are relieved to report that all of Saturn’s employees and contractors that were displaced by the wildfires have returned to their undamaged homes. Saturn said it is assessing the potential

damage of our wells and infrastructure, and we are currently not aware of any significant impairments.

The company also confirmed that 268,333,333 of the Company’s listed common share purchase warrants exercisable on a 20:1 basis at $0.16 per share (ticker SOIL.WT) have expired and have ceased trading on the TSX Venture Exchange effective June 5, 2023. As the warrants were listed, amendments to the terms thereof (including any extension or price adjustment) was not permissible within the rules of the TSX Venture Exchange’s Corporate Finance Manual.

It is always celebrated on Ascension Day (the Thursday forty days after Easter), which is a federal holiday. Regionally, it is also called men’s day, Männertag, or gentlemen’s day, Herrentag. It is tradition for groups of males (young and old but usually excluding pre-teenage boys) to do a hiking tour with one or more smaller wagons, Bollerwagen, pulled by manpower. Surprise Dad With the Best Burger for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is fast approaching, and if you’re wondering what to do for dear ol’ dad, I have a suggestion. How about a mouth-watering burger? There’s nothing quite like a juicy burger, especially when made with love for the special father figures in your life.

• On July 1, 1972, the feminist magazine Ms., founded by activists Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes, published its first regular issue, featuring Wonder Woman on the cover. Steinem’s choice to showcase the Amazonian superhero was inspired partly by DC Comics’ decision to have the long-running character lose her superpowers (which were soon restored).

• On July 2, 1505, on the verge of becoming a lawyer, Martin Luther was caught outside in a violent thunderstorm. Praying aloud for St. Anne to save him, he promised to become a monk if his life was spared. He survived the tempest and entered an Augustinian monastery several weeks later, despite the efforts of his friends to persuade him otherwise.

• On Feb. 23, 1997, the three-anda-half hour Holocaust drama “Schindler’s List” aired commercial-free on the NBC television network. Seen by 60 million people, it was the first film to display TV Guide’s rating of TV-MA (unsuitable for children under 17), due to scenes of violence and brief nudity, which also sparked some political controversy.

Now, I’m not talking about the kind of hamburger you get at the drive-through, but a burger purists would love. A burger with a balance of textures, big beefy flavor, enrobed in cheese. No need to visit your local steakhouse to satisfy that craving. We can make them at home at a fraction of the cost.

There are many ways to make a great burger, but here’s a goofproof favorite. Let’s make thin burgers rather than thick. Thin burgers have an advantage that I can describe in two words: “surface area.” The edge, or crust, of a burger is full of flavor. This is the Maillard reaction, friends. This reaction happens when protein reacts with high heat. Thin patties cook quickly and evenly, and turn out crispy and caramelized outside, juicy inside. Want more beef? Stack ‘em up.

In a skillet: Heat skillet to medium heat, and place burgers in the pan without crowding. Depending on the size of your pan, you might need to cook in batches. Once you place the burger, don’t move it for 3 minutes. This allows the crust to form. Flip burgers, top with cheese and cook until the bottom is browned and the cheese is melted, about 2 minutes. Repeat with remaining burgers. On a grill: Preheat the grill to medium-high. Brush the burgers with oil and sprinkle with kosher salt. Place on grill, without moving, for 3 minutes on the first side. Then flip, add cheese and grill for 2 minutes more.

Government in Action

A central India food inspector, Rajesh Vishwas, lost more than his phone on May 21, NBC News reported. While snapping a vacation selfie at Kherkatta Dam, Vishwas dropped his phone into the water. According to him, his device contained sensitive governmental information, so he ordered the reservoir to be drained. Vishwas said he got permission from R.C. Dhivar, a local water resources official, but Dhivar argued that he’d given permission to drain only 3 or 4 feet of water. Instead, “They had emptied the water up to 10 feet.” It took three days to drain the 530,000 gallons of water, but in the end, it was all for naught: Vishwas’ phone was unusable. As was he: He was suspended from his job pending an investigation.

New York attorney Anthony Orlich is probably tearing his hair out in the wake of an incident in late May, the New York Post reported. Orlich allegedly snatched the wig off the head of Brooklyn singer Lizzy Ashleigh while walking along a city street at night; Ashleigh captured the aftermath on her cellphone and posted a video to TikTok, which garnered hundreds of thousands of views. In the video, Ashleigh yells at Orlich: “Sir! For what reason did you take my wig off? What makes you think that that’s OK?” Orlich refused to apologize, even with his friends encouraging him to. Ashleigh has said she plans to take legal action, but Orlich is already in trouble: His firm, Leader Berkon Colao & Silverstein LLP, has fired him, according to a LinkedIn post.

TOP 8 REASONS to advertise

IT’S A FACT: when consumers feel personally connected to an advertisement, they’re more likely to support your business. Here are 8 good reasons to allocate an advertising budget.

1. INCREASE TRAFFIC. Consumers are more likely to visit a business after seeing an advertisement — and more consumers mean more sales!

2. IMPROVE YOUR IMAGE. Dynamic and engaging advertisements attract consumers, no matter how strained the economic situation or how stiff the competition.

3. ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS. The market is always changing, and new consumers are constantly popping up in your region. There you go, a new target audience to inform that your business has what they want.

4. BUILD CUSTOMER LOYALTY. Once-loyal customers may drift away as their options multiply. By advertising, not only do you instill a sense of belonging and trust, but you also encourage them to remain loyal to you.

5. IMPROVE YOUR COMPETITIVE EDGE. The hard truth is that a limited number of consumers are willing to buy your products. Advertising is the best way to convince them that your products are THE best, no matter what the competition says.

6. STAY TOP OF MIND. When you advertise your products, you alert potential customers to your products or services. This increases the likelihood that they’ll think of you when they need the products or services you offer.

7. INFORM THE PUBLIC. When you launch a new product, for example, advertising allows potential customers to find out about it without having to do research.

8. INCREASE REVENUE. Effective advertising attracts customers to your business and improves sales. In short, it increases your success!
