10 Things Single People Can Do To Survive Valentine’s Day

• Buy yourself a nice bottle of wine. Two Buck Chuck is a glorious thing, but do like Beyonce says and upgrade u every once in a while. Who says you’re not worth a $20 bottle every now and again? Because you are.

• Order a pizza. Alone with pizza is better than alone alone. (Also, I mean, that’s a whole. entire. pizza that you don’t have to share with anyone but you, yourself, and you.)

• Watch movies that you know a significant other would scoff to death if you ever tried to watch in their presence. Cheesy 90s teen flicks work really well here. The Notebook does not.

• Buy yourself flowers. Not only do they brighten up any room they’re in, but hey, they’re pretty. You deserve pretty things, and sometimes, all it takes is being reminded that you can be just as kind to yourself as a significant other might be.

• Get in on the bath & wine combo. Or have a shower beer. Or take shots while you’re waiting for a face mask to dry. Whatever your poison, just pamper yourself.

• Throw a little extra cash in the coffee shop tip jar in the morning. Say thank you to the guy bagging your groceries — and mean it. Little things add up, and will boost your mood like crazy.

• Spend a little extra time at the gym. Take a class you’ve always wanted to try, but never thought was in your comfort zone. Kill time in the steam room. Endorphins work wonders, and before you know it, your lonely Valentine’s day just got hot.

• Call up your parents and ask them about how they met, or ask your coworker how they met their spouse, or talk to the friend who’s in the kind of relationship you usually find yourself pining over. It may seem bittersweet to torture yourself over not having found “the one” yet, but their stories will usually have the narrative that the right person is worth waiting for. Don’t settle for someone just because you want them for one day out of the year.

• Throw a Christmas party. Or a 14th of July party. Or an Un-Birthday party. Off-season decorations are usually really cheap, and you and your friends (both single and coupled) will have so much fun in the ridiculousness that is Halloween in February that it won’t even matter who’s in a relationship anymore.

• Remember that it is just one arbitrary day out of many, and a little winged child with sharp sticks does not define love. Love is what you make of it. If and when you do meet somebody, you can celebrate being together then. A date on the calendar might be nice, but really, has nothing to do with the concept of affection.

Q:

Will there ever be another season of “Lucifer”? If not, is the lead actor going to be in anything else? I really enjoyed him.

A:“Lucifer,” starring Tom Ellis, was picked up by Netflix after it was canceled by Fox after three seasons. It was wildly popular on the streaming service and ended up surviving three more seasons, but a seventh is not in the works.

Ellis has two upcoming projects on Hulu. The first is “Washington Black,” with Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”), which is a limited series about a young boy living on a 19th century sugar plantation. Ellis will play an eccentric inventor. He also just signed on for another upcoming series on Hulu with Emma Roberts (“American Horror Story”), a romantic dramedy titled “Second Wife.”

Q:Whatever happened to romantic comedies? I miss the movies that starred Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock with a leading man. — A.L.

A:Your best bet for romantic movies are during the months of February and December, but they’re mostly on television. However, with the recent box-office success of “Ticket to Paradise,” which starred Julia Roberts and George Clooney, you could be seeing more rom-coms at the local moviehouse. This month, on the small screen, there are several movies that might appeal to you, such as “Sweeter Than Chocolate,” which premiered on the Hallmark Channel on Feb. 4. It’s about a local chocolatier rumored to have the recipe for true love, and it stars Eloise Mumford (“Chicago Fire”) and Dan Jeannotte (“The Bold Type”). Over on Netflix, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher star in “Your Place or Mine,” which focuses on two friends who swap homes for a week. Currently, on Amazon Prime Video, you can stream Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel’s “Shotgun Wedding,” which isn’t your typical lighthearted rom-com — it’s also an action thriller.

As for Meg Ryan, she’s returning to her roots in her upcoming film “What Happens Later,” in which she not only stars but also directs. Ryan plays Willa to David Duchovny’s (“The X-Files”) Bill; they’re former lovers who meet

for the first time in years while stranded overnight at the same airport. An official release date hasn’t been announced, but expect to see it in theaters sometime this year.

Q:My nephew wants to work in the film industry, but doesn’t want to move too far from family. I told him that many shows are filmed in Georgia. Where can we find a list of them? — P.A.

A:Yes, it used to be that you had to live in Los Angeles, New York or Chicago if you wanted to work in the television and film industry. Now, a few more geographical options are available, like Vancouver, Canada, and Atlanta. Prolific writer and producer Tyler Perry even opened his own studio lot in Atlanta, helping to contribute to the billions of dollars in revenue that the entertainment industry has brought to the state. Other shows that film in Georgia include Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead” and ABC’s “Will Trent.”

Kindersley RCMP request help in locating a stolen truck

In the early morning hours of February 6th two unknown males broke into a R.M. of Prairiedale storage shed. Once inside they stole a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab with RM of Prairiedale decals on the back passenger windows bearing Saskatchewan licence plate 975JPP. Kindersley RCMP are also looking for information on the pictured vehicle that was travelling in tandem with the stolen truck. Along with this break and enter the pictured truck is believed to be related to two thefts at oilfield sites in the area. If either vehicle is spotted Kindersley RCMP are requesting the public contact them immediately.

In addition, Kindersley RCMP were doing proactive patrols in the area of Kerrobert and detected a suspicious vehicle in the area. A subsequent traffic stop was conducted and the driver was arrested. Charged was the following:

Deanna O’Brien of Kerrobert was charged with two counts of Pos-

session of Drugs for the Purpose of Trafficking under section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and two counts of Failing to Comply with Conditions of a Release Order under section 145(5)(A) of the Criminal Code.

O’Brien has been remanded for court in Saskatoon. ‘This is a great example of our members conducting rural patrols and engaging with suspicious behaviour’ stated Staff Sergeant Kevin Peterson of the Kindersley RCMP. ‘We always encourage the public to call us if they see suspicious people or vehicles in their communities.’ Peterson went on to say.

Whitecap closes three deals, two of which were in Sask.

Twice last week, SaskEnergy set new daily natural gas usage records, and we can thank Alberta for most of our supply

Not only was Saskatchewan setting electrical consumption records during the cold snap of last week of December, we also set two consecutive natural gas consumption records, too.

According to SaskEnergy in a Dec. 31 release, “Extreme cold weather across Saskatchewan this week resulted in record-breaking natural gas demand in the province. On December 28 and 29, natural gas consumption surpassed the previous daily record of 1.57 petajoules (PJ) which was set in February 2021.

CALGARY – Whitecap Resources Inc. announced on Feb. 6 that it has closed all three previously announced dispositions of certain non-strategic assets for aggregate consideration of $419 million, including $394 million of cash, prior to closing adjustments, and producing assets that consolidate the working interest in one of its core assets.

“A new daily record of 1.62 PJ was set on December 28 and broken again on December 29 with total system delivery of 1.64 PJ. Delivery numbers for December 30 and 31 are not yet finalized, but are also expected to exceed 1.6 PJ.”

On Dec. 19, Whitecap Resources announced three separate dispositions totalling 10,000 boepd. Without saying who the other party was, the first one was a match to a corresponding ROK Resources announcement, with a sale of 1,500 boepd and picking up 475 boepd. Call that Disposition A, and ROK announced their deal closed on Jan. 24, 2023.

The natural gas records coincided with record power consumption. On Dec. 29, SaskPower set another record in power consumption for Saskatchewan. At 5:27 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2021, Saskatchewan homes and businesses reached 3,868 megawatts (MW) in power use, according to the Crown corporation. The previous record of 3,792 MW was reached four years ago to the day, on Dec. 29, 2017.

Saskatchewan’s power production has increasingly shifted from coal to natural gas as a fuel source. In December, Boundary Dam Unit 4, a coal-fired generating unit, was retired, reducing the Boundary Dam Power Station to 672 megawatts capacity. On the natural gas side, Saskatchewan has seen the construction of several new natural gas-fired power plants. They include the baseload North Battleford Power Station (289 megawatts), Yellowhead Power Station peaking plant (also at North Battleford, 135 megawatts), the baseload Chinook Power Station at Swift Current (353 megawatts) and peaking plant Spy Hill Power Station (89 megawatts). Another 353 megawatt baseload

Whitecap’s Disposition B was to a private company operating in Saskatchewan, and involved roughly 3,500 boepd of production, nearly all of which was in Saskatchewan, but a marginal amount of production in Manitoba was also included. Whitecap would not release where the production was, who the buyer was, or the dollar value.

Whitecap’s Disposition C was for 4,500 boepd production spread across Alberta to a private company

plant, very similar to Chinook, is under construction at Moose Jaw.

operating in Alberta. Again, the price was not disclosed.

All of this added natural gas-fired power generation has, in turn, driven higher usage of natural gas during times of high electrical consumption.

The Crown noted that increased demand from SaskEnergy’s industrial customers, including natural gas use for power production, was the main driver of this week’s record-setting consumption.

SaskEnergy said it measures daily natural gas consumption for the 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. A PJ is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million gigajoules (GJ) of natural gas. An average Saskatchewan home consumes about 100 GJ of natural gas each year.

Whitecap said proceeds from the dispositions have been used to reduce net debt1 to $1.5 billion which accelerates achieving its net debt target of $1.3 billion to mid-2023, based on current strip prices. The company’s plan is to return 75 per cent of free funds flow to its shareholders, which includes its targeted $0.73 per share annual base dividend, once this $1.3 billion net debt milestone is achieved. The remaining 25 per cent of free funds flow will be used to continue to reduce debt and strengthen its balance sheet.

“SaskEnergy’s natural gas system design can accommodate additional capacity to manage increased consumption even on peak days,” SaskEnergy president and CEO Ken From said in a release. “Throughout the year, SaskEnergy employees inspect, maintain and enhance the system to support safe and reliable natural gas delivery in all weather conditions. In addition, employees monitor the system 24 hours a day to ensure sufficient system capacity to meet customer demand across the province.”

This province is now largely dependent on neighbouring Alberta to fulfill roughly two-thirds of our natural gas needs.

When natural gas prices took a tumble roughly 14 years ago, Saskatchewan’s domestic gas production fell off a cliff. Targeted gas drilling went essentially extinct, with next to no gas-specific wells being drilled in this province for most of the past decade. Our domestic gas production is now largely based on associated gas production that comes with oil production. As a result, Saskatchewan went from being a net gas exporter for the period of 1988 to 2009 to a net importer that year.

“We have successfully monetized these non-strategic assets at strong disposition metrics and look forward to demonstrating strong operational performance on our core assets in 2023. We expect to grow 2023 annual production to 160,000 – 162,000 boepd from our 2022 annual production of 144,000 boepd (13 per cent production per share growth) on capital expenditures4 of $900 – $950 million,” the company said in a release on Feb. 6.

Whitecap will be releasing its fourth quarter and year end 2022 results after market close on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

WEYBURN – Who has made a difference, or perhaps dedicated their lives, to the oil and gas industry in Saskatchewan. You’ve got some time to ponder that, and perhaps nominate them for 2024 Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show awards.

The Weyburn Oil Show Board has announced that nominations are now being ac-

cepted for the Southeast Oilperson of the Year, and Southeast Sask Legends Award.

The awards are among the highlights of the oil show, and are often handed out by the premier or minister of energy and resources.

The Southeast Oilperson of the Year will be presented to an individual who has been recognized as making a significant contribution to the

growth and success of the industry in Southeast Saskatchewan. To qualify the candidate should be based in Southeast Saskatchewan.

The Southeast Saskatchewan Legends Award is to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to the industry, associations, and communities in Southeast Saskatchewan over the duration of their career. Criteria for this award includes at least 25 years of work in the oil and gas industry with the majority of that time being spent in Southeast Saskatchewan.

There’s some time to think about who to nominate, as nominations are due on Oct. 31, 2023, with the forms being found on the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show website, www.oilshow. ca/awards. The recipients will be presented at the next Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show on June 5, 2024.

New World Order

Sure, your fancy SUV may have ventilated seats and Wi-Fi, but does it have electrified door handles? The Guardian reported on Jan. 25 that a new vehicle has hit the market targeted at the particularly fearful driver -- the Rezvani Vengeance. Costing up to $499,000, the Vengeance has bulletproof glass, strobe lights, wing mirrors that emit pepper spray and no back windshield -- instead, the driver can monitor a live video stream of what’s going on behind the car. Sure to win you a popularity contest in the pickup lane at your kid’s school, the Vengeance also has a loudspeaker so you can call to little Timmy without leaving the safety of your seat. Extras include bulletproof vests, helmets and gas masks. The Irvine, California, company teases potential buyers on the website: “Vengeance is yours.” Wow.

Dream Job

Five lucky participants will clear a cool $1,000 to do what they wanted to do anyway: Eat cheese before bedtime. Fox5-TV reported that Sleep Junkie, a mattress review website, hopes to test the legend that eating cheese before bed causes nightmares, so they’re asking “dairy dreamers” to consume a wide variety of cheeses, log their sleep and provide feedback about sleep quality, energy levels and bad dreams. The best part? Participants will be reimbursed for the cheese! The catch: You have to sleep alone.

Police Report

A 31-year-old woman was charged with two counts of robbery and possession of a weapon (ahem) on Jan. 22 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, after a puzzling attempt to steal a pizza, the CBC reported. Around 3 a.m., she allegedly entered a crowded restaurant and demanded a pizza, brandishing a firecracker as a threat. She was denied the pie, so she lit the firework and ran off with a pizza. Outside the restaurant, she got into a cab, but the driver asked her to get out because she was being belligerent. When the driver stepped out of the car, she jumped into his seat and took off, dragging the 54-year-old several meters down the street. Officers caught up with the stolen cab and caught the pizza thief when she became stuck in a snowbank.

A Comfort Food Comes Back for Super Bowl

Remember French bread pizzas? If so, those memories are likely nostalgic, comforting, cozy, crunchy, soft and warm, with that aroma that made the whole house smell good.

The French bread pizza is a 1960s invention. The story goes that a Cornell University New York food truck owner named Bob Petrillose (aka “Hot Truck Bob”) invented French bread pizza. These first French bread pizzas were called PMP or “Poor Man’s Pizza” and were well-loved by the late-night student crowd. Eventually, in the 1970s, this style of pizza flourished in popularity with Stouffer’s French Bread Pizza of freezer aisle fame.

While the frozen variety was standard 1980s afterschool snack and Friday night fare, the homemade PMPs are still a hit for anyone who wants an easy and inexpensive way to get dinner on the table in under 30 minutes any day of the week.

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

3 teaspoons Italian seasoning, divid-

ed

1 cup pizza sauce, purchased or recipe below

2 cups low moisture mozzarella cheese, shredded

3 ounces pepperoni, sliced 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 400 F degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a serrated knife, cut French bread loaf in half lengthwise through the center. This will give you two long pizza shells.

Use your hands to press the center of each piece down a bit. Deflating the bread will give you plenty of room for filling while keeping the bread from getting soggy while it’s in the oven.

on top of the sauce. Add the pepperoni on top, and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of Parmesan cheese and 1/2 teaspoon remaining Italian seasoning onto each half.

Place the pizza back in the oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown. Slice and serve. No need to ever purchase pizza sauce again with this handy dandy, frugal and fabulous recipe.

PETITE PORTION PIZZA SAUCE

Yield: 1 cup sauce

Total Time: 12 minutes

1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 to 2 teaspoons sugar

Put a coffee filter into a small strainer, and place over a small bowl. Pour 1 (8-ounce) can of tomato sauce in the coffee filter contraption to drain for 10 minutes to remove excess liquid. Mix the drained sauce with 1 teaspoon each garlic powder and Italian seasoning and 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar, according to your personal taste. You can enjoy this recipe even if you’re not watching the big game. Or only watching the commercials and halftime show and feeding the masses, like me. But if you’re watching the game, I hope your team wins. Let’s keep making memories with French bread pizza for generations to come.

This family favorite is perfect for Super Bowl because it comes together so quickly, you could easily make it during halftime.

The Eagles will face the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57

Of course, KC Head Coach Andy Reid will be among the lead storylines in this year’s Super Bowl. Reid coached the Eagles from 1999-2012 where he led the opposition Eagles to six division titles, five NFC Championship games and even one appearance in Super XXX1X. He has guided Kansas City to a Super Bowl victory in 2019 against the San Francisco 49rs. Now he has a chance to win his second Super Bowl with Kansas City against his old team. Quite a story indeed.

The Chiefs finished 14-3 in the regular season and defeated the Bengals 23-20 in the AFC championship game, which avenged last season’s loss in the same round. Kansas City is making its fifth Super Bowl appearance – and its third in the last four seasons.

Patrick Mahomes III, a strong candidate to win his second NFL MVP award, played through a high-ankle sprain. Tight end Travis Kelce also played through back spasms. The Chiefs’ primary playmakers will have two weeks to rest and heal and field the best team possible. The defense, led by Chris Jones, made the plays at the right time this season.

Philadelphia, which finished 14-3 in the regular season, is making its fourth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. The Eagles beat San Francisco 31-7 in the NFC championship game, and now second-year coach Nick Sirianni has a chance to lead Philadelphia to its second Super Bowl championship.

Jalen Hurts, who suffered a shoulder injury in Week 15, rushed for three TDs in two playoff victories, and the Eagles rode a balanced offense to this Super Bowl appearance. Hassan Reddick, who has 3.5 sacks in the postseason, leads a nasty pass rush that totaled 70 sacks in the regular season. On paper this looks like it’s going to be a good one. Will the Eagles win their second Super Bowl in six seasons? Or will the Chiefs win the “Reid Bowl?”

KERROBERT

Once upon a time, a beautiful, independent, self-assured princess happened to meet a frog in a pond.

The frog said to the princess, “I once was a handsome prince until an evil witch put a spell on me. One kiss from you and I will turn back into a prince and then we can marry, move into the castle with my mom and you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children and forever, feel happy doing so.”

That night, while the princess dined on frog legs, she kept laughing and saying, “I don’t THINK so.”
