HOLLYWOOD — Who isn’t talking about Barbra Streisand’s memoir “My Name Is Barbra”? After doing a slew of interviews, many taped at her home in California, she revealed Judy Garland’s advice to her: “Don’t let them do to you what they did to me!” But what you won’t read in her book was when I first met her; she was co-starring with Elliot Gould (who would then become her future husband) in “I Can Get It for You Wholesale” on Broadway. I asked her to take a photo, and she said, “I look a mess!”

You also won’t read about the night Elliot assaulted me while protecting his wife from being photographed at the premiere of Steve McQueen’s film “Bullitt” (1968). Barbra was removed from my lawsuit because she hadn’t physically assaulted me, but still, I won two battery judgments against Elliot. There was also the time she killed my Cosmopolitan magazine cover for spite because of my lawsuit. Elliot apologized eventually. Still, I have loved, and will always love, her golden voice.

Word that “Young Sheldon” is ending after it seven seasons has upset fans, until word also came that Chuck Lorre, producer of “The Big Bang Theory,” might develop a possible spin-off for the Max streaming service. Speculation is that the reboot could center around entirely new characters, the children of Sheldon and Amy and Howard and Bernadette, which would leave the door open for guest appearances or supporting roles for the original “Big Bang Theory” characters. This was successfully done in the reboot of “That ‘70s Show.”

Disney’s CEO Bob Iger turned Netflix down on its offer to license some of their Disney+ hits from Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and other core brands such as the “Star Wars” franchise. Disney won’t give up, no matter how strapped for cash they have become. The bold move from Netflix came

after Warner Bros. licensed some of their DC hits — “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad,” “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League” — to Netflix, who allegedly have more money than all the other streaming services put together. How long will Disney hold out?

“Monk” fans rejoice! Peacock has announced that they have greenlit “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” The story involves Monk looking for the killer of his stepdaughter’s fiance, who died in a bungee jumping accident.

Aiding and abetting Monk again is Ted Levine as Leland Stottlemeyer, Traylor Howard as Natalie Teeger and Jason Gray-Stanford as Randy Disher. Even though Monk has to overcome his fear of heights and germs to solve this case, he’s now in a sympathetic post-COVID world. How can Monk stand out now that we’ve all become germophobes?

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” (PG) — Steve Carell’s grouchy, yet lovable supervillain, Gru, first appeared on the big screen in 2010 during the box-office sensation “Despicable Me.” The film quickly evolved into the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time, and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” was no different than its predecessors, garnering close to $1 billion. Starring Carell as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the minions, the latest film in the franchise takes us back to 1976 where an 11-year-old Gru dreams of becoming a supervillain. But with ambitions as high as Gru’s, he can’t go it alone and will need to find some assistance — specifically in the form of a yellow banana-loving species of creatures. Out now. (Peacock)

“The World to Come” (R) — Winner of the 2020 Queer Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival, this drama film taking place in 1856 New York stars Katherine Waterson (“Fantastic Beasts”) and Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”) as two respectively married women who feel severe isolation in the farmlands they live in. Both being married to emotionally lacking men, and being devoid of children, the two women start spending their downtime together and find meaningful solace in their shared moments. Eventually, they find that their bond is much deeper than friendship. Waterson and Kirby are an incredible lead duo; their performances as actresses excellently sync up to the profound and poetic dialogue of their characters. Out now. (Hulu)

“Little Richard: I Am Everything” (NR) — Known as the “Architect of Rock and Roll,” Richard Penni-

man, aka Little Richard, was a pioneer of his genre and lives on as a legend of popular music and culture. This documentary, which features tons of archival footage and interviews with his family and other musicians, dives into his legacy and explores his influence as a Black queer icon. It also touches on how he inspired other artists of his time and the many eras of music yet to come. The film depicts a very nuanced story that centers on the fact that Little Richard “was an omni being who contained multitudes — he was unabashedly everything.” Out now. (Max)

“Elisa & Marcela” (TV-MA) — This Spanish-language biographical film shot entirely in black and white is one of Netflix’s hidden gems and a must-watch for those who enjoy minimalistic, character-driven movies. Inspired by the true story of Elisa Sanchez Loriga and Marcela Gracia Ibeas, the film recounts how a lesbian couple managed to get married in 1901 at the Church of Saint George in A Coruna, Spain. As if told in book chapters, it details how the two women met during their time at school and formed an immediate friendship that progressed into a forbidden romantic relationship. When outside forces threaten to drive them apart, Elisa and Marcela go to great lengths to conceal their relationship, with Elisa even taking the identity of her deceased male cousin. Out now. 1. Urinating in a pool is dangerous for your heart. Though defi nitely unsanitary, peeing in a pool might seem harmless for your health. After all, urine is sterile, as is chlorine. As it turns out though, urine and chlorine create dangerous chemicals when combined. In fact, that socalled “pool smell” is actually the scent of those chemicals. One of those chemicals—cyanogen chloride—is classified as a chemical warfare agent and can damage your heart and lungs. Other byproducts, called nitrosamines, can even cause cancer.

2. You typically only breathe through one nostril at a time. You might think that your nostrils share the workload when it comes to inhaling and exhaling. And while they do, it’s not quite in the way that you might expect. You actually inhale and exhale through one nostril at a time. Every few hours, the active nostril will take a break and the other one will take over until they ultimately switch back again. Put your fi nger under your nose and try it. Prepare to be amazed!

3. Anxiety can make bad smells even worse. Speaking of your nose, a 2013 study published in The Journal of Neuroscience examined the way certain emotions affect your sense of smell. After exposing subjects to anxiety-inducing images like car accidents and war, researchers found that neutral scents became unpleasant and bad smells became even worse.

4. Men are more forgetful than women. Numerous studies dedicated to comparing the memory abilities of men and women consistently prove that men are more forgetful than women. One 2015 study published in The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology hypothesizes that this could be due to the varying brain structures of men and women—specifically, that the hippocampus (the part of the brain associated with memory) begins to decrease in volume faster in men than in women.

5. Your pupils can hint at your Alzheimer’s risk. Of course, the telltale sign of Alzheimer’s disease is memory loss, but dementia also manifests itself in your eyes. In a 2019 study published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, researchers noted that the disease affects the locus coeruleus, a cluster of neurons in the brainstem responsible for pupillary responses, among other things. As a result, individuals with cognitive impairment who are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s have greater pupil dilation while performing cognitive tasks.

“Small” enough to care, “Big” enough to supply

Twice last week, SaskEnergy set new daily natural gas usage records, and we can thank Alberta for most of our supply

sumption records during the cold snap of last week of December, we also set two consecutive natural gas consumption records, too.

treme cold weather across Saskatchewan this week re sulted in record-breaking natural gas demand in the province. On December 28 and 29, natural gas con sumption surpassed the previous daily record of 1.57 petajoules (PJ) which was set in February 2021.

28 and broken again on December 29 with total system delivery of 1.64 PJ. Delivery numbers for December 30 and 31 are not yet finalized, but are also expected to exceed 1.6 PJ.”

The natural gas records coincided with record power consumption. On Dec. 29, SaskPower set another record in power consumption for Saskatchewan. At 5:27 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2021, Saskatchewan homes and businesses reached 3,868 megawatts (MW) in power use, according to the Crown corporation. The previous record of 3,792 MW was reached four years ago to the day, on Dec. 29, 2017.

All of this added natural gas-fired power generation has, in turn, driven higher usage of natural gas

The Crown noted that increased demand from SaskEnergy’s industrial customers, including natural gas use for power production, was the main driver of

SaskEnergy said it measures daily natural gas consumption for the 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. A PJ is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million gigajoules (GJ) of natural gas. An average Saskatchewan home consumes about 100 GJ of natural

wraps final right of way restoration on Line 3 replacement

“SaskEnergy’s natural gas system design can accommodate additional capacity to manage increased consumption even on peak days,” SaskEnergy president and CEO Ken From said in a release. “Throughout the year, SaskEnergy employees inspect, maintain and enhance the system to support safe and reliable natural gas delivery in all weather conditions. In addition, employees monitor the system 24 hours a day to ensure sufficient system capacity to meet customer demand across the province.”

Saskatchewan’s power production has increasingly shifted from coal to natural gas as a fuel source. In December, Boundary Dam Unit 4, a coal-fired generating unit, was retired, reducing the Boundary Dam Power Station to 672 megawatts capacity. On the natural gas side, Saskatchewan has seen the construction of several new natural gas-fired power plants. They include the baseload North Battleford Power Station (289 megawatts), Yellowhead Power Station peaking plant (also at North Battleford, 135 megawatts), the baseload Chinook Power Station at Swift Current (353 megawatts) and peaking plant Spy Hill Power Station (89 megawatts). The official record shows that construction of the Canadian portion of Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement Program (L3RP) was completed more than four years ago and that the new pipeline came into commercial service in December 2019.

But as the general public marked those milestones, small Enbridge construction crews readied to tackle a final series of tasks – ensuring full and final restoration of the 1,070-km pipeline’s surface corridor to its pre-construction state.

“Most people thought we were done with Line 3 in 2019, but there’s plenty of work that goes on in the field even after construction is complete and a new pipe-

line becomes operational,” said Enbridge Construction Manager Allen Sawatzky. “With the last seed sown within the pipeline right-of-way (RoW) at the end of October, we can now say the job is truly complete.”

Going forward, maintenance of the pipeline RoW will continue under the Enbridge Operations team.

When natural gas prices took a tumble roughly 14 years ago, Saskatchewan’s domestic gas production fell off a cliff. Targeted gas drilling went essentially extinct, with next to no gas-specific wells being drilled in this province for most of the past decade. Our domestic gas production is now largely based on associated gas production that comes with oil production. As a result, Saskatchewan went from being a net gas exporter for the period of 1988 to 2009 to a net importer that year.

At the time of its construction, L3RP was the largest Canadian pipeline project in more than a decade. It included installation of 36-inch-diameter, Canadian-made steel pipe over a vast stretch of the Prairies, three above-ground tanks capable of storing up to 1 million barrels of oil,

and 18 pump stations to keep the product flowing. Construction took place over several seasons by a peak workforce of about 5,300.

Both during and after construction, Enbridge worked closely with landowners to identify patches of land that would require additional attention such as reseeding, noxious weed control or rearranging topsoil among other measures. Aerial and ground surveys also helped pinpoint these areas.

By the start of 2023, a total of 84 items remained in need of some form of additional attention. With the support of subcontractors – Castle Oilfield Construction of Virden, MB and Neil Charteris Reclamation Services Inc. of Kerrobert, SK – this final field work commenced in the spring and wrapped up in a snow-dusted field near Kerrobert on Oct. 29.

The full scope of work in 2023 involved:

• Reseeding pasture seed mixes following a third year of drought and poor germination in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan;

• No-till drilling and hydro seed (applied wet with tackifier seed mix) to stick to steep, dry slopes;

• Rearranging topsoil and repairing settled ditch lines;

• Side-by-side chemical boom spraying, select hand spraying and mowing to control weeds; and,

• Tractor, skid steer and whipper snipper hand mowing.

“From the very beginning, Enbridge made a commitment that we would leave the land in as good or in better condition than it was before construction started,” Sawatzky said, “and we can now say we’ve done what we said we would do and made good on that promise.”

Surprise, Surprise!

When antique dealer Beth Meyer bought the contents of a storage unit in September 2022, she was disappointed that there were no rocks inside; rocks are her specialty. However, The Washington Post reported, she did fi nd a human skull among the items. Th is October, she put a $4,000 price tag on the skull and used it in a Halloween display in the store she helps run in North Fort Myers, Florida -- until an anthropologist walked through and saw it. While Meyer already knew the skull was real, the scientist thought it was very old and possibly from a Native American person, making it subject to certain federal laws. So they contacted the Lee County Sheriff ’s Office. Deputies deposited the skull with the medical examiner’s office, and while Florida law prohibits selling human remains, they don’t believe Meyer did anything wrong. She said she was “unaware of the skull being a Native American. I put such a high price on it that I figured no one would buy it.”

Savor the Season With a Quick Chicken Enchilada Casserole

The holidays are in full swing with all the hustle and bustle and seemingly endless to-do lists.

You know what we need? (Besides more money, lower prices and an extra week before Christmas.) We need a recipe for an easy, comforting, home-cooked meal the whole family will love that doesn’t break the bank.

Today I’m sharing a recipe that’s a true gem; a Chicken Enchilada Verde Casserole that’s not only easy on the wallet but also on your precious time. This is your ticket to a cozy, heartwarming dinner with a recipe that easily doubles so you can make one for dinner tonight and stash the second in the freezer for a zero-effort dinner when you are too tired from all the fun to cook.

CHICKEN ENCHILADA VERDE CASSEROLE

Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Total Time: 45 minutes

1 (28 ounce) can green chile enchilada sauce, divided

1 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon ground chile powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 to 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded or chopped

1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans, drained 15 yellow corn tortillas, cut in half

3 cups Mexican cheese blend, shredded

Optional Garnish: onions, cilantro, avocado, tomatoes, sour cream and tortilla chips

Placing the cut sides along the sides of the pan offers better coverage for layering.

Spread half of the chicken mixture on top of the tortillas. Evenly distribute 1 cup of cheese over the chicken mixture.

Place another layer of 9 tortilla halves followed by the remaining chicken mixture and 1 cup of cheese. Layer the last tortilla halves on top followed by the remaining enchilada sauce. Top with the last cup of cheese. Bake for 30 minutes, or until it’s nice and bubbly. Allow this to rest for 15 minutes before serving. Garnish as desired.

Store leftovers in the fridge for three to four days. Or freeze for up to three months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes when completely thawed. If you have the budget to add some ingredients to this casserole, you could happily add a can of diced tomatoes with chiles and/or a can of diced green chiles. And no one would be mad at you if you added more cheese.

www.JasonCoblentz.com

Please note this is enchilada casserole, not enchiladas. I find layering like lasagna is faster and easier to prepare and serve than rolled enchiladas. But if you have the time, use this recipe to roll enchiladas to your heart’s content.

This recipe calls for corn tortillas, but you could use flour tortillas if that’s what you have. I love the way corn tortillas absorb the sauce and become almost fluffy. Besides, if you buy a package of 30 corn tortillas, you have enough to double this recipe.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees with the rack in the middle position. Grease a 9-by-13-inch pan, then pour 1 cup of enchilada sauce and spread around the bottom. Set it aside.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 cup enchilada sauce, sour cream, cumin, chile powder, salt and pepper. Add the shredded chicken and pinto beans, then stir to combine.

In the 9-by-13 pan, place 9 tortilla halves on top of the enchilada sauce.

So whip up this Chicken Enchilada Casserole, savor the flavors of comfort food and take a moment to cherish the warmth it brings to your table. And remember, doubling the recipe can be a lifesaver during these busy times, either for yourself or as a gift for another holiday harried household. Enjoy!
