Town plans treats for Winter Wonderland anniversary EAGLE STAFF

Town councillors agreed to offer hot chocolate and hot dogs when the Winter Wonderland lights are turned on around this time next year.

Amanda Bors, the interim chief administrator, suggested the town “do something” to help organizers celebrate the 25th anniversary of Winter Wonderland. A host of characters from storybooks, cartoons and movies

appear under strings of lights shortly before Christmas, transforming Lovett Park into Winter Wonderland.

Mayor Trevor Hay suggested supplying hot chocolate and hot dogs, as has happened in the past.

“It might be cold out, but there will be warm hot chocolate and warm hot dogs,” Hay said.

Bors also noted that people can purchase mittens bearing their names, which are displayed in the park around the Centennial Library, to help raise money for

new displays.

People can buy the mittens at the town office, she said. “It all goes to buying new stuff out there.”

Hay also expressed appreciation to the organizers — Char and Glenn McNally, and Marge and Brian Champion — who were assisted by Simplot staff, councillor Jan Coffey-Olson said.

“It looks so good,” Kimiko Otterspoor said.

“And it snowed the next day,” Greg Carlson added.

Council to hold January meetings on paving costs, 2026 budget

Clinic staff strained as physician shortage persists EAGLE STAFF Staff at the community clinic are under pressure dealing with potential patients upset that a physician cannot see them promptly, councillors learned last week.

Only one physician currently works at the clinic, although a locum will be there until the end of the year, even working over the holidays, according to a report from the clinic presented at the Dec. 15 council meeting.

The report noted that the “lack of physicians causes stress and panic among the public,” adding that staff “try to explain our situation.” Just over 1,100 patients attended the clinic in November.

“No news of any full-time physicians coming to join our team yet, but we are keeping our fingers crossed,” the report said. The remaining doctor “is very overwhelmed with four doctors’ patient loads.”

Councillor John Kadler noted that Ontario is offering an “up-front bonus” to attract physicians, while other councillors said the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) now handles such incentives. Communities around the province previously used these pay-

ments to lure doctors.

“The authority makes the decisions now, but we have to get something to reduce the stress load on that doctor,” Councillor Greg Carlson said.

“It’s unfortunate that the SHA doesn’t keep us in the loop about what exactly is going on and when somebody’s coming,” Mayor Trevor Hay said.

Carlson suggested creating a script to help staff ease tension and anger while explaining that there are only one or two doctors available and patients will have to wait for an appointment.

“I just see this every month—it’s getting worse, and it’s going to continue until we get the clinic moved,” Carlson said. “I don’t feel it’s fair for clinic staff to bear the brunt all the time. We can’t make doctors, but we can make a script.”

The authority “has promised jobs for the clinic’s full-time staff, but they don’t know what those jobs are yet,” Bors said about the planned move of physicians to an office in the hospital basement, where renovations are underway.

“I think it’s a sad situation,” Councillor Art Garrett said. “The province, the country, is in this situation, and I don’t know how you rectify it.”

Two meetings are scheduled in January to discuss how to pay for new paving and to work on the town’s 2026 budget.

“Rosetown’s not getting anywhere in paving,” new councillor John Kadler complained Dec. 15, during his first meeting as a member of council.

Councillors, at their Dec. 1 meeting, accepted two petitions in which enough property owners on Fortune Crescent and Little Flower Avenue voted out local improvement projects intended to rebuild their streets.

Kadler said he would have voted against the Little Flower project had he lived there, “but it’s got to be done,” while Mayor Trevor Hay and councillor Art Garrett said they would have supported the plans.

“We’ve had many discussions” about paying for street rebuilding strictly through property taxes, and the town would have “to raise everyone’s taxes $500 or $700 a year,” Hay said. “Is that feasible? I think you’d have a lot more people complaining about paying that.”

Money the town designated for its 50 per cent share of both projects “is still sitting there,” councillor Jan Coffey-Olson said.

“I think it improves property value,” Garrett said, drawing agreement, and noting that more paved streets make “Rosetown a nice place to visit and stay.”

Councillor Kimiko Otterspoor suggested “a large conversation to figure out how we’re going to move this forward,” and council agreed to meet Jan. 6. Otterspoor later suggested that paving projects in other communities “cost less than ours do.”

Kadler said he would have voted against the Little Flower project had he lived there, “but it’s got to be done.”

Hay noted.

Staff will try to have representatives from the town’s engineering firm attend the meeting. Kadler also wondered how towns of similar size in the region pay for their paving projects.

“Approximately half the cost of Kindersley’s current infrastructure work is financed by revenue generated from the annual per-household infrastructure/road work levy of $300,” a message on that town’s website says.

“The town budgets a matching amount as much as the mill rate will allow.”

Councillors also learned that Rosetown Housing Authority residences turned a small profit in 2025. The authority will keep the town’s share — almost $73, or five per cent of the profit — until 2026, to add to or subtract from future earnings or losses.

“They have a few units that are empty,” said interim chief administrator Amanda Bors, explaining she was told the units need “major repairs” worth at least $30,000 each. She also expressed surprise that the authority had a surplus “with the amount that they have empty.”

Rosetown Seniors Centre This past week at the Rosetown Seniors Centre, friendly competition was in full swing. In whist, Lynne Farquharson took first place, followed by Jim Wright, Larry Deitsch, and Darlene Aitken. Bingo winners included Marlene Dawson (two games), Lynne Farquharson, and April Yarrow (two games).

Just a gal from Glidden Do Not Be Afraid: There Is Good News

BY KATE WINQUIST “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today the Oyen Echo has met its saviour. She is Kate Winquist. Hallelujah!”

Those words, written by Diana Walker on the front page of the Dec. 17, 2020, Oyen Echo, feel like yesterday—though five years have passed. It’s hard to believe that half a decade ago, I stepped in to take over a weekly community newspaper many thought was destined to fold.

In doing so, I jokingly earned the title of “saviour of newspapers” in west-central Saskatchewan and east-central Alberta.

After all, only six months earlier I had launched Your West Central Voice from scratch, following the closure of the Kindersley Clarion in February 2020.

It’s a title I take lightly. The need, however, is very real. Last week, the Carlyle Observer published its final edition on Dec. 18 after 89 years of operation. Earlier this year, the Estevan Mercury ceased publication after 122 years. Saskatchewan has seen a sharp decline in local journalism, with dozens of newspapers closing or consolidating as advertising revenues shift and digital media rises.

Some notable recent closures include: • Carlyle Observer: Closed Dec. 18 after 89 years.

• Estevan Mercury: Ceased publication Jan. 1 after

122 years.

Estevan Web Printing: The province’s last newspaper press, closed earlier this year.

• Kindersley Clarion: 110-year-old weekly, closed 2020.

• Moose Jaw Times-Herald: 128-year-old daily, closed in 2017.

• Saskatchewan Valley News: Closed in 2017 after 114 years.

The trend is clear: hundreds of local outlets across Canada have shut down since 2008, with community newspapers among the hardest hit. Large media chains increasingly consolidate or close underperforming print operations, focusing on digital assets.

This fall, the Rosetown Eagle teetered on the brink of closure. Once again, I had the opportunity to step in, as I did with the Oyen Echo in 2020. It begs the question: if I hadn’t, would anyone else have? Each closure underscores just how fragile local journalism has become—and how easily communities can lose their own stories.

We’ve weathered the storm (so far) by focusing on hyper-local content. Independent newspapers like •

ours play a vital role in keeping readers informed about what’s happening in their communities. We cover local events, news, and issues that larger media outlets might overlook. We focus on our community’s unique stories and ensure that voices are heard and remembered.

Our work isn’t without challenges. We have a small but dedicated team, which means important stories sometimes go uncovered—not because they aren’t important, but because resources are stretched thin. Joan Janzen, Patti Moran, Greg Paulhus, Diana Walker, Ian MacKay, David McIver—and my husband, Robert, and I—keep the presses rolling and the stories alive, rain or shine, sleet or snow, and yes, even through postal strikes.

Fun fact: our newsroom qualifies for the senior’s discount almost everywhere. Greg and I are the “young ones,” while the rest of the team brings enough collective wisdom, mileage and well-earned coffee breaks to fill several decades. Experience is something we have in abundance—but finding and nurturing the next generation of journalists remains a challenge we continue to face.

So yes, I may have “saved” a paper or two, but we all know who the real Saviour is—and He happens to be celebrating His birthday this week.

Trump orders blockade of Venezuelan oil tankers, but war unlikely United States President Donald Trump has ordered “a total and complete” blockade of all “sanctioned” oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuelan ports, a move that some analysts say amounts to an act of war.

Trump has a history of threatening military action against Venezuela.

By Gwynne Dyer reported that during Trump’s first presidential term, the president said invading Venezuela would be “cool” because it is “really part of the United States.”

Gustavo Petro, the current president of Colombia, said his predecessor, Iván Duque, was approached by Trump in 2020 with a plan to invade Venezuela via Colombia. U.S. troops would have landed in Santa Marta and marched across the border, Petro said. Trump’s advisors ultimately talked him out of the plan.

Trump is widely known for his bluster, and analysts note that he rarely acts on his threats. There are not enough American troops in the Caribbean region to make a full-scale invasion of Venezuela feasible, they say. Trump is also politically averse to wars, having promised his MAGA base “no more forever wars” in foreign conflicts. He is known for echoing the views of those around him, but it would take exceptional

persuasion to convince him to go against his own instincts.

The blockade alone is unlikely to bring down Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. While cutting oil income could hurt the regime, Venezuela’s oil production has already collapsed to less than one million barrels per day due to domestic mismanagement. Years of corruption and incompetence have left the country’s economy fragile, and many Venezuelans have grown accustomed to economic hardship.

Venezuela is also unlikely to provoke a U.S. invasion by trying to break the blockade. Frustration may rise on both sides, but analysts say major violence is unlikely unless a senior figure in the Trump administration acts independently or without oversight.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has repeatedly criticized the governments of Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba, calling them “enemies of humanity.” He made the statement in Costa Rica earlier this year to underline Nicaragua’s proximity, but he often emphasizes this view wherever he travels.

Rubio, a second-generation Cuban-American, has long focused on overthrowing Communist regimes in the region. His parents emigrated to Miami in the mid-1950s before Fidel Castro came to power, and like many Cuban-Americans, Rubio’s politics have been shaped by that experience. Overturning these regimes has been a defining goal of his career.

As a Florida senator, Rubio had access to Trump and recognized him as a potential instrument to advance his agenda. After becoming secretary of state in January, he gained significant influence over U.S. for-

eign policy, particularly in the Western Hemisphere.

That influence has contributed to the U.S. focus on Venezuela, a country that rarely features at the top of global strategic priorities.

Some U.S. strategists argue that Venezuela is key to Cuba and that regime change in Caracas could lead to change in Havana. Analysts dismiss this argument as unrealistic. The Cuban revolution survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and remains resilient despite decades of U.S. sanctions. Any change in Venezuela is unlikely to destabilize Cuba.

Still, Rubio’s focus on the region, combined with Trump’s unpredictable approach, raises the risk of prolonged U.S. involvement in Venezuela. Analysts caution that unless Trump keeps hawkish advisors in check, tensions could escalate into a longer-term confrontation.

While the blockade increases pressure on the Maduro government, U.S. officials must weigh the economic and political consequences carefully. Venezuela’s economy is already struggling under domestic mismanagement, and further pressure could worsen humanitarian conditions. At the same time, the administration must avoid steps that could be interpreted as a provocation or trigger a military conflict.

In short, while the Trump administration’s blockade is a serious escalation, experts say the risk of full-scale war remains low. Venezuela’s weakened oil industry and political resilience, combined with Trump’s reluctance to engage in foreign conflicts, suggest that the situation, though tense, is unlikely to spiral into open hostilities in the near term.

Bart Dailley’s remarkable journey

Bart Dailley thinks he can still get the better of Gord Moore—if Dailley is playing goal.

Dailley, also known as Bart Warburton, is usually remembered here as the sports reporter for CKKR (later CJYM) radio and the radio voice of the senior Redwings from 1968 to 1973. He went on to become the first radio play-byplay announcer for the Calgary Flames, doing that in 1980–81.

That brings up his challenge to Moore, who wore No. 11 when he played for the Redwings.

“I played goal for the Flames at one practice and I told Gord Moore, ‘You can’t beat me in a long shot from the blue line. I was too quick for him,’” said Dailley, adding that Moore still can’t beat him.

Dailley came a long way from Toronto, where he was born and raised, and he’s gone far since his Rosetown days.

He left Toronto in 1967 and went to a series of “whistle stops” for radio work: Yarmouth and then Amherst, both in Nova Scotia, followed by Kirkland Lake, Ont., and finally Rosetown.

He wasn’t always a sports reporter.

In CJKL in Kirkland Lake, “I did everything,” including being a late-night rock-and-roll disc jockey.

“And I got a call from Rosetown.

They needed a sportscaster. And that was my goal: to be a radio sportscaster.”

That was one of two reasons he moved here, said Dailley. The other was that he’d never been west of Detroit. “I wanted to go the first chance I got, and I didn’t care where it was.”

Dailley arrived on Feb. 8, 1968.

People wondered about his first impressions of Rosetown.

“Everybody asked me, ‘Well, I guess

“I loved it. It was the greatest five years of my life working at CKKR in Rosetown. I worked for the finest person I could ever work for. I met my girlfriend (Barbara Morris, middle daughter of Ed and Lillian Morris), who became my wife. Our first child was born there.

I broadcast hockey, went coast to coast with the Rosetown Redwings. No, it was absolutely the greatest.

“I often think if I were to be frozen in time, where I would like to be, I figure 1970 Rosetown.”

The Redwings never won the Canadian intermediate hockey championship but reached the final series for three consecutive years, said Dailley.

They lost to the Bathurst Alpine Paper Makers in Bathurst, N.B.; then to the

Campbellton Tigers—also from New Brunswick—in Rosetown; and finally to the Saint John Moosehead Patriots in Saint John, N.B. Dailley remembers playing alongside coach Byron McCrimmon (who died on July 10), sons Brad (who died in a tragic plane crash in Russia with the team he coached in 2011) and Kelly when they were “little guys,” and Redwings such as Moore, Jules Hrapchak, Denis Lemieux, goalie Ken Fensom, defenceman Danny Smith, captain Jim Foster, Denny Johnston, Ron Keogan from Biggar, Alfred “Gaff” Turner, “who was in his mid-40s when I arrived and played a little bit,” Stu Walker, and Ray Schultz, brother of former NHLer Dave Schultz.

At CKKR, he remembers owner Stan Solberg, who died in 2024; morning show host Pat O’Connor; engineer John Guppy; and other employees, including Danny Teed, Gary Barr, Ronnie White, Pat Hume, Paul Ouellette, and Phil Johnston (featured in a Sept. 22 Eagle article).

Before he was married, Dailley lived in a basement suite at 205 Little Flower Avenue; the Listoes lived upstairs. After their wedding, he, Barbara, and, later, Steven lived at 316 Sixth Avenue West, a block north of Guppy and his family.

In 1973, Dailley and his family left Rosetown, adding children Monica and Roger in subsequent years.

“I loved Rosetown, but there was no money to be made. It fed my ego, but once I had a child, I figured, ‘Well, I’ve got to start making some money,’ and decided to go for the big city. The first step was Welland, Ont.” That was followed by radio sports jobs in Toronto, Montreal, and finally Calgary. While working for CHQR doing Calgary Flames broadcasts, Dailley met coach Al MacNeil, who died in January. “He became one of the greatest friends I ever had in sports,” he said.

Other people he encountered included general manager Cliff Fletcher, goalies Rejean Lemelin, Pat Riggin, and Daniel Bouchard (who got traded for Phil Russell), as well as players Don Lever and Kent Nilsson.

Among Dailley’s previous stops, Montreal was particularly memorable, especially one player with the Major League Baseball Expos. Andre Thornton came to the Expos from the Chicago Cubs in a mid-season trade in 1976.

He played amid injuries and had only a .194 batting average. Thornton “didn’t distinguish himself and they (Expos management) gave up on him,” said Dailley.

With the Summer Olympics in Montreal that summer, Dailley’s radio station CJGM did its morning show live from Place Bonaventure and “spiced it up” each morning by bringing in different athletes to interview—Alouette football players Wally Buono and Carl Crennell one day, Canadiens Ken Dryden and Yvon Cournoyer another,

and Expos Thornton, Woody Fryman, and Gary Carter another day.

Thornton had been with the club for only two weeks, and Dailley hadn’t met him yet, only remembering he was known as a Christian athlete, so he asked him about that. After a brief onair talk, Thornton sat down with Dailley over coffee and “told me how he came to know the Lord. And I realized in July 1976 this is what I needed most in my life. (I) didn’t need it so badly that I made an instant decision, but He touched me.”

Thornton was traded that December to the Cleveland Indians (where he became one of the club’s all-time greats), around the same time Dailley got a job in Calgary, so he would never see Thornton again.

“And then tragedy struck a year later,” said Dailley. In 1977, a car accident took Thornton’s wife and daughter. He and their son survived injuries.

“I remember saying to the Lord, if you’re going to do this to one of your devout followers, I’m not going to follow you. I turned my back on the Lord,” he said.

In 1978, Air Canada issued direct flights from Calgary to Los Angeles and invited media along. Dailley was one of those invited. The Calgary media contingent planned to go to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and a ball game between the California Angels and the Cleveland Indians.

Dailley arrived at the ballpark very early, where there was a chapel service conducted by Thornton. Afterwards, they talked.

“How could this happen to you?”

Dailley asked.

“He said, ‘I don’t know. But God will never put you through anything that you can’t get through.’ Right there and then, I made a 180-degree turn, brought the Lord into my life at a Billy Graham crusade in 1981, and (have been) walking with Him ever since.”

Dailley was replaced as Flames playby-play announcer that same year. He worked in real estate and office equipment sales and made a brief comeback in radio at CKMX in Calgary from 1998 to 2003, doing sports and sales. He quit after he had a heart attack.

Dailley also began lay ministry work, which has included pastoral work at two churches in and near Calgary. That work started at a senior care home in Calgary called Trinity Lodge, which had daily chapel services. A pastor friend told the chaplain to invite Dailley to take part. He gave a devotion to the residents; the chaplain became his mentor, and when he died, Dailley replaced him.

He’s been chaplain at Trinity Lodge for 38 years, doing services, visiting, and even officiating at weddings. That will end on Dec. 31 with his retirement.

While Dailley, 82, spoke while having influenza, that’s not the reason for his retirement. He said he’d like not having to get up at 7 a.m. for work five days a week.

What does Dailley say to people who are lonely at Christmas?

“What I urge people to do is to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. That’s the reason for the season. If you didn’t make it in 2025, make 2026 the year you draw close to the Lord. If you draw close to Him, He will draw close to you.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Makes 12 cannoli • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon white sugar • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small cubes • 1 egg

• 3 tablespoons dry white wine • Oil for frying (canola or peanut) • 1 ½ cups ricotta cheese • ½ cup icing sugar • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract • Zest of one lemon • 1 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. In a bowl, combine the flour, white sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the butter and rub together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Stir in the egg and white wine. Then, form into a smooth dough.

2. Knead the dough lightly and wrap it in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 min.

3. Roll out the dough to about two millimetres thick and cut into circles about 10 centimetres in diameter. Wrap each piece around a cannoli mould (or a metal tube), then seal with a little water.

4. Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven to 350 F and fry the shells for one to two minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and let cool before removing from the moulds.

5. Whisk the ricotta with the icing sugar, vanilla and lemon zest until smooth.

Add mini chocolate chips, if desired. Refrigerate for 15 to 30 minutes to firm up the filling.

6. Fill the shells just before serving using a piping bag. Sprinkle with icing sugar.

2. Place two slices of prosciutto and a portion of burrata cheese on each slice of bread.

BAKE For a classic yule log, use a light sponge cake made with flour, sugar and whole eggs. Beat the eggs until they triple in volume. Look for a reliable recipe online and bake the sponge cake on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

ROLL There are several schools of thought on how to roll a yule log cake.

Here’s a time-tested method.

1. Remove the sponge cake from the mould as soon as it comes out of the oven. Use a knife if necessary.

2. Place a sheet of parchment paper slightly larger than the cake on your work surface.

3. Turn the baking sheet upside down to place the sponge cake on the parchment paper. Then, immediately (and gently) peel away the paper used during baking.

4. Roll the cake up using the parchment paper underneath.

5. Cover the dessert with a damp dish towel and let it cool.

That’s it! The hardest part is done.

FILL Unroll the cooled cake and spread it with your filling of choice, such as ganache, whipped cream or jam. Use the parchment paper again to roll the cake back up. The previous steps will have made it pliable and moist.

For the finishing touch, some people prefer to cov­er the log completely with icing; others dust it with a little bit of icing sugar or chocolate shavings. At this stage, let your imagination run wild.

MerryChristmas Festive cupcakes Nothing says party like an enticing cupcake.

This easy Christmas-themed recipe is sure to delight all your guests.

INGREDIENTS Makes 12 cupcakes • 1 ½ cups flour • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened • 1 cup icing sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided • 2 eggs, at room temperature • ¾ cup milk • 2 tablespoons white sugar • 2 cups 35% heavy whipping cream • 1 cup fresh cranberries • A few sprigs of fresh rosemary

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners.

2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

3. In another bowl, cream the butter and icing sugar together with an electric hand mixer until light and fluffy (about two to three min­ utes). Add the vanilla. Incorporate the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

4. Gradually add the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, alternating between the two.

5. Pour the mixture into the 12 prepared muffin cups.

6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of a muffin comes out clean. Let cool completely before decorating.

7. Meanwhile, pour the white sugar into the cream and beat with an electric hand mixer until stiff peaks form. Top the cupcakes with whipped cream, cranberries and rosemary, arranging the rosemary to resemble holly.

7 gift wrapping tips

Cherry tomato and burrata salad This fresh Italian salad makes a colourful starter for any festive meal. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS Servings: 4 • 4 cups arugula • 2 cups assorted cherry tomatoes • 2 balls burrata cheese • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon balsamic glaze • A few fresh basil leaves, chopped • Salt and freshly ground pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Wash and dry the arugula. Place it on a large serving plate.

2. Wash the cherry tomatoes, cut them in half and scatter them over the arugula.

3. Drain the balls of burrata, then tear them roughly with your hands. Scatter the pieces over the salad.

4. Drizzle evenly with olive oil. Then, drizzle the balsamic glaze over the top.

Sprinkle with chopped fresh basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

Town makes upgrades to AGT Centre, renews Minor Ball agreement

Town workers had adjustments to make because of the new boards at the AGT Centre.

“We had to move the (score) clock up,” recreation director Kelli Emmons told councillors during their Dec. 15 regular meeting. The new board system had a bar that blocked part of the clock showing penalty minutes, Emmons said.

“It was hard for players, coaches, and the worker in the penalty box to see how much time was left, so we had to raise it two to three feet,” she explained. Workers also had to build a support structure to hold it at its higher location and lift it into place.

A replacement boiler “was installed and running” at the arena, she added.

The previous boiler, serving the east side of the arena, stopped working when a vent motor failed, councillors were told during their Dec. 1 meeting.

That left one boiler to heat the entire arena and provide hot water, Emmons said on Dec. 15.

“If that one had gone down, everything probably would have frozen, because we were pretty cold there for a few days, and everything is heated through the hot water,” she said.

Additionally, the arena sound system wasn’t working properly, so she borrowed a Bluetooth unit to test over a weekend.

“It seemed to be running pretty well,” she said, adding that she planned to get prices for upgrading the system.

Those who organized the Female Showcase hockey event in November will direct some of its proceeds to the project.

Kelli Emmons most of the drywall and insulation, Emmons said. The area had been damaged by water seeping in, councillors learned on Dec. 1.

Council members also approved renewing an agreement with the Rosetown Minor Athletics Association for maintaining the ball diamonds at the sports grounds and Walter Aseltine School. The two-year agreement pays the association’s minor ball division $5,000 a year and provides certain supplies, such as paint for dugouts, while handling scheduling, major repairs, and maintenance of the sports grounds’ sprinkler system.

The association hires staff to keep the grounds, bleachers, dugouts, and washrooms clean, and to level diamonds before games—or twice a week for those on the school grounds during May and June. It also pays $500 a year for diamond rental.

“They’ve done a really nice job out there,” Mayor Trevor Hay said, adding that “the diamonds look really nice” and the agreement “frees up” parks staff to work in other areas.

“A lot of out-of-town teams will make comments about the diamonds and what good shape they’re in,” Emmons added.

RCMP respond to collisions, suspicious activity in Rosetown-Kyle area The Rosetown/Kyle RCMP dealt with a range of incidents over the week of Dec. 12 to 18, including vehicle collisions, suspicious activity, and reports of erratic driving.

On Dec. 12, officers responded to an abandoned semi tractor-trailer on Highway 7 near Harris at 6:09 a.m., remaining on scene until the roadway was cleared. Later that morning, police investigated a report of a suspicious person attempting to enter a local business; the individual left when unable to gain access. RCMP also assisted a motorist with a broken-down vehicle on Highway 4 near Kyle, and responded to a minor collision outside Rosetown School in the afternoon. Both vehicles involved were driveable and no injuries were reported.

On Dec. 14, a motor vehicle collision in Lucky Lake was reported at 8:47 p.m., but both vehicles were drivable

and no formal report was required.

The following day, police began investigating indecent communications received via email. RCMP also received a complaint of driving without due care and attention on Highway 7 west of Rosetown.

Dec. 16 saw further traffic complaints, including reports of erratic driving on Highway 7 and an abandoned vehicle in Rosetown, which was determined not to be stolen.

On Dec. 17, RCMP investigated a suspicious vehicle in Rosetown, which was deemed non-suspicious. Officers also assisted Rosetown Towing with traffic control on Highway 4 north of Kyle while a vehicle was removed.

Additionally, a stolen vehicle report is currently under investigation.

During the week, officers issued seven traffic-related charges, responded to one false alarm, and had no mis-dial 911 calls.

Royals split teams for girls basketball; local bowlers advance

BASKETBALL One team didn’t make the trip, which led to the host Royals playing as two teams to fill out the eight-team draw at the senior girls basketball tournament on Dec. 12-13.

The Royals A team lost 51-32 to the Unity Warriors in the A final. The Royals B team fell 32-19 to the Clavet Cougars in the game for seventh place.

The Biggar Blazers defeated the McLurg Broncs of Wilkie 40-31 in the consolation final.

The Macklin Sabres had withdrawn from the tournament, so the host team didn’t exactly split into two teams but brought up junior players to supplement senior players when playing twice as many games.

This meant that in the A final, the

Royals A team was playing its third game on Saturday while the opposing Warriors were only playing their second.

Willemina Heinrichs scored 11 points and Brenna Zummack added eight to lead the Royals, while Tylan Blanchette scored 29 points for the Warriors.

The Royals A team reached the final with a 29-25 victory over the LCBI Bisons. Zummack led the Royals with 13 points, and Rayna James added nine.

Because the core of the A and B Royals were the same players, they didn’t face each other in the first game of the tournament early Friday afternoon, using the time for a practice game with the Bisons, who won their opening match by forfeit.

Their opponents, the Broncs, missed the game after getting the time wrong.

The B Royals, relegated to the consolation side, had their first game, a 39-29 loss to the Broncs. Statistics for that and other Royals games weren’t available.

In other games, the Assiniboia Rockets defeated the Bisons 38-27 to finish third. The Rockets had beaten the Clavet Cougars 54-27 on Friday and then lost 45-33 to the Warriors in a semifinal. The Biggar Blazers lost 52-31 to the Warriors in the last Friday game and then edged the Cougars 42-41 on Saturday morning.

The junior girls Royals weren’t done for the year after that tournament. They went to Eston on Dec. 16 and won 43-19.

Sydney Dessert scored 17 points, Macy Wick added nine, and Gracie Rawson contributed eight for the Royals. Teagan Unrau scored 10 points to lead the Mustangs.

“You’ll grow into it” (Rats!). If the gift was too small, she usually said, “Maybe your brothers can wear it” (a lucky break for me, but not so much for my little brothers). If the gift was too itchy, she usually said, “You can wear something underneath it, so it won’t itch.” And if the gift was too ugly, she usually said, “At least wear it around Grandma so you won’t hurt her feelings.”

Mercifully, the clothing gift I always got from Grandma was usually too small. But sometimes—horror of horrors—it actually fit! The trouble with that was, Mom might do the unthinkable and actually make you wear it to school! And if you wore something that uncool on the playground at recess, you risked getting beat up by the bigger kids—or at the very least, being severely razzed by your own friends.

So, you’d try your best to keep the uncool item out of sight on the playground under your jacket, and if you were lucky, you’d usually get by.

To avoid the embarrassment, some kids would “accidentally-on-purpose” try to lose the item on the playground.

But an eagle-eyed teacher who saw you wearing it at the start of recess would tell you to pick it up and bring it back with you to class. And if you were ever lucky enough to lose it forever, you might still be forced to reclaim it on “lost and found” day at the end of the school year—especially if it had your

name tag sewed in the collar.

When my youngest brother got married and had kids, my little niece and nephew had no idea how lucky they were to have our mom as their grandma. She was a cool and enlightened grandma and usually gave her grandkids things they actually wanted for Christmas—rather than things she thought they needed.

Though always given with good intentions, Grandma’s practical Christmas gifts were usually disappointing to us as kids. But that didn’t mean we didn’t love her dearly. When she knew we were coming to visit, she’d bake giant sugar cookies the size of pot lids just for us! She saved the Sunday colour funnies from the newspapers for us to read and did all kinds of other endearing “Grandma” things to show how much we meant to her.

And she always tucked a dollar or two into our birthday cards to help make up for her Christmas gifts—and that was a lot of money back then! So, all in all, we have very fond and happy memories of her being a pretty good Grandma, despite her dreaded but well-meaning Christmas gifts. I smile at the memory now.

To all the other kids out there—both past and present—who have had to endure their grandma’s “practical” Christmas gifts over the years: have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

ROSELEEN HRYCIW

January 13, 1939 - December 14, 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, Roseleen Hryciw, on December 14, 2025, at the the age of 86. Mom was born on January 13, 1939 and spent her childhood in Vonda, Donavon and Saskatoon. After marrying Harry Hryciw, they resided in Stranraer, Rosetown and retired back to Saskatoon.

Mom enjoyed her flowers, gardening, dancing and listening to Saturday Night Polka Party, but her greatest joy was cooking and baking for her family and friends.

She leaves behind her daughters, Joanne (Mike)

Hill and Natalie Peel; three granddaughters, Andrea (Jordon Hamilton), Kitena (Cheyne Dallyn), and Shantel (Jay) Balfour; six great-grandchildren, Talynn and Theea, Isla and Elyse, Bodhi and Jax; sister, Elaine Monk; sister-in-law Janet Boyenko, and several nieces and nephews.

Mom now reunites with Dad; her parents, Mike and Anne Boyenko; Dad’s parents Nick and Sophie Hryciw and brother, Terry Boyenko.

Roseleen was also the last of the aunts and uncles on Dad’s side. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Looking Back With David McIver

100 years ago - Dec. 24, 1925 Officials of the town and nearby rural municipalities agreed to discontinue free treatment at Rosetown Union Hospital. The decision came after the department of Attorney General Thomas Davis had declared municipal for free hospital treatment to be illegal. A delegation met in Regina with Premier Charles Dunning and his cabinet to appeal this but to no avail.

Charles Mathieson, Lawrence Saunderson, Fred Hollick, Howard Brown, Violet Cleaver Annie Hollick assisted students in an entertainment at Lotus School, west of Anglia.

80 years ago - Dec. 20, 1945 Recent reports stated that Rfm. Hervé Alfred Labrecque and others had been murdered by German soldiers while prisoners of war in June.

Labrecque, 22, was born here and took all his schooling at Hillside School but for two years at St. Thomas College in North Battleford.

70 years ago - Dec. 22, 1955 Ruth Stout won the high school Bryant oratory contest with her speech, The Canadian Way of Life. Edna Smith placed second. Sylvia Moxley, Barbara Holler, Madeline Hanson and Carole Clarke also spoke.

Almost 700 people attended the carol festival at the high school.

At Druid, east of Dodsland, the recent blizzard meant children spent the night in their classrooms, some without food. A dozen farms had no power for 45 hours. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Horysh closed off the rest of their house and lived in their kitchen, heated by the gas range oven with light from two candles and drinking water dipped from the cistern. For the first time, the morning passenger and evening passenger trains met at Druid Station. There wasn’t a collision, “much to the disappointment of two little boys.”

Mrs. Jim McWatters of the Milden - Zealandia district had spent from Monday noon until Wednesday morning in her car in a field. She’d gone to look for their stock. Her husband was in hospital and her children at school. While without water or food, Mrs. McWatters had her dog with her, which kept her from freezing to death.

At Anglia, Jean Czubak got storm-stayed with schoolmate Marian Millard, said correspondent Mrs. H. B. Saunderson.

The oldest McGee-district settler, Bob Gilroy, was found dead in his home on Dec. 17. Gilroy homesteaded there in 1905.

50 years ago - Dec. 22, 1975 The town had a new fire chief: Paul Hrynkiw.

Rosetown Composite High School students put on a musical comedy-drama, Young Dracula, on two nights. The cast included Karen Martens, Penny Auckland, Bill Clarke, Lorene Zacharias, Kim Strelioff, Jerry Epp, Tom Liska, Rita Bechard, Barb Scott, Wendy Werner, Myrna Pearce, Sue Betts, Carolyn Williams, Dennis Fleming, Monte Solberg, Lori Aitken, Joan Werner, John Ritz and Merla Ahrens. The title contradicted the lead role played by Joel Shortt, who admitted near the end, “I’m just an old bat.”

30 years ago - Dec. 18, 1995 While the congregation numbered 20, about 60 attended the final service of Rosetown Presbyterian Church on Dec. 10. The church opened in 1910. Members Harold Barrie, Doreen Lewicki and Margaret Coulter and former member and missionary Georgina Bone spoke about the loss.

20 years ago - Dec. 19, 2005 Lloyd Henderson of Herschel joined 500 other air force veterans in the unveiling at Trenton, Ont., of a fully restored Handley Page Halifax heavy bomber, the only one of its kind in the world and the same kind that Henderson flew during the Second World War. A photo showed resident Starla Kemp and elementary student Kami Brooks packing Christmas hampers for needy families. Donations were down this year, said one of the organizers, Alisa McGregor

Weekly Recipe

Honey Oat and Flax Granola Ingredients 2 cups large flake rolled oats 1/2 cup ground flaxseed 1/2 cup sliced almond 2 tbsp whole flaxseed 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 1/3 cup canola oil 1/3 cup honey 1 tbsp milk 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup toasted pumpkin seeds

Preparation in Body Subhead style Preheat oven to 300 F (150 C). Line baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside. In large bowl, stir together oats, ground flaxseed, almonds, whole flaxseed, cinnamon and salt; set aside.

In another bowl, whisk together oil, honey and milk. Drizzle over oat mixture and stir well to combine evenly. Spread onto baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes. Stir mixture and return to oven for about eight minutes or until crisp and golden. Stir in cranberries and pumpkin seeds.

Let cool completely.

Store granola in an airtight container or resealable bag for up to two weeks.

Makes eight servings, 422 calories each.

Preparation time: 10 minutes; total time: 30 minutes.

Rosetown Court hears disturbing testimony as trial continues EAGLE STAFF Two children testified as the trial of a man accused of four offences resumed during a provincial court session at the Elks Hall on Dec. 11.

The child the man is accused of touching for a sexual purpose said, in a video recorded less than a week after the October 2022 incident, that the man had come into her bedroom in Rosetown, laid down beside her “and started putting his hands in my pants.” She added that he had also “smacked my mom.”

The man also faces charges of sexual assault, assault, and dangerous driving.

Questioned by a local RCMP officer, the girl said that he had first blown on her chest and “asked ‘what do you want?’ over and over.” She said the man “smelled of beer and smokes.”

His hands went beneath her underwear, and she started to cry, asking him, “Can you please stop? Stop; stop;” before he finally stopped, she said. He left the room, went downstairs, and she later informed her mother, the girl added.

Earlier that day, he had driven “smoking and drinking beer” partway to Rosetown with the girl and her brothers, she said in the video.

Cross-examined by the accused’s lawyer on Dec. 11, she said she remembered “a little bit” of the trip to Rose-

town.

“I can’t remember him blowing on my chest, but I remember him putting his hands in my pants and him smacking my mom,” she told the lawyer.

An older brother said in another video that he had been “afraid I was going to die” because the man was driving so fast and swerving into the oncoming lane, sometimes into the ditch.

He said the man had slapped his mother “hard” from 12 to 15 times.

When Judge Miguel Martinez asked near the end of his cross-examination if the man had used both hands and slapped both sides of his mother’s face, he replied, “Yes.” He also told the defence lawyer that the man had swerved the vehicle “about five times,” did not go into the ditch, and that he could not see the vehicle’s speedometer because the man’s shoulder was blocking his view.

The trial is scheduled to continue on Feb. 12.

Traffic and Driving Offences • Kassie Sylvestre, 32, of Turnor Lake, must pay $1,000 and is prohibited from driving for at least a year. She pleaded guilty to impaired driving due to alcohol. Gagandeep Brar, 27, and Kulvir S. Brar, 62, of Calgary, fined $300 each instead of $820 for speeding near Rosetown on March 8. Speeds were reduced from 152 km/h to 135 km/h through plea deals.

• Muhammad K. Choudhary, 50, of Saskatoon, fined $194 for going 122 km/h near Tessier on Oct. 16.

• Melanie S. Leblanc, 30, of Saskatoon, fined $194 after pleading guilty as the registered owner to speeding near Zealandia on Sept. 26. She said she was following a speeding semi and focused on passing it despite seeing flashing police lights.

• Roman Konovalov, 45, of Woodbridge, Ont., fined $170 instead of $292 for going 110 km/h near Rosetown on March 11. Police recorded 133 km/h.

• Sara Engen, 33, of Rosetown, fined $115 for driving with a badly damaged windshield near town on Oct. 3.

• Jay J. Aitken, 59, of Great Falls, Mont., fined $100 instead of $194 after explaining his GPS gave inaccurate speed/location readings on a trip to Rosthern.

Judge Martinez also refused to reopen a deemed speeding conviction from 2022, noting the application arrived “way past time.”

In Kerrobert, all four of Dodsland’s goals came in the first period. Joyce, Jon McDonald, Derek Smith, and Riley Dipple scored for the Stars. Kayden Ostrom got the Redwings on the scoreboard at 11:58 of the third period. All goals were at even strength. The Stars outshot the Redwings 61-19, and Martens made 57 saves. Stars counterpart Kyle Turk blocked 18 Redwing shots.

The Redwings had only 13 skaters in Kerrobert, including backup goalie Jonathan Kampen, who hasn’t played “out” since atom hockey, said head coach Curtis MacDonald. A “full bench” was expected for Friday’s rematch, he added.

Against the Kodiaks, Walker Doetzel, Kyle Ireland, Kayden Ostrom, Corben Hogan, Jordan Johnston, John Hill, and Colt Cross scored Redwing goals.

Ireland had three assists, and Ostrom two. Colby Kozicki scored for the Kodiaks. Noah Martens made 14 saves in the Redwing net, while Kaden Elliot stopped 16 Redwing shots.
