On the nights of December 5 and 6, 305 visitors followed a lighted star to the Crossroads Centre in Oyen. Once inside, they entered a different world.

Walking into a starlit street, they heard a rabbi debating with a shepherd over a vision of angels, the sound of live sheep, a pitiful beggar asking for alms, a collector “demanding” taxes (the proceeds of

Ten times the Oyen Ministerial, in collaboration with countless volunteers and organizations, have welcomed visitors near and far to a Night in Bethlehem. It began in 2008, when Andrea Shields approached the Ministerial with the idea.

Preparations that first year didn’t start until September, and it ran for only one night. The afternoon of that opening night, the rock walls were still being formed and painted. But what a night it was—about 500 people crowded the street of Bethlehem. Shepherds warmed themselves by a fire in the parking lot. A CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

They smelled freshly baked bread, Mediterranean food, the anachronistic odors of cookies and hot chocolate, and, of course, the live sheep. Visitors could sew a pouch at the textile shop and drop by the inn (which had no vacancy). The rabbi told a story and read a prophecy, which a shepherd said had just come to pass. Hearing from the shepherd what the angels had said, visitors would find, at the end of the road, a mother and father with a tiny infant in a manger.

minstrel, who had previously interned at Oyen Evangelical Missionary Church, strummed his guitar— only to have it crack when he returned home to Saskatchewan. The Ministerial banded together to help fund a new one.

Yet the heart of Night in Bethlehem lies beyond old memories and spectacle. The birth of Jesus Christ two thousand years ago was a momentous occasion in world history, though only a handful of people realized it at the time. Whether you believe it or not, the story of his life, death, resurrection, and ascension has profoundly shaped the world in which we live. It forms the core of the faith of billions around the globe.

As Canadians, we cannot understand where we come from—which is part of who we are—without it.

The generations that follow need to hear this story because it is part of our heritage. Some may even find the joy and peace it offers.

This is what Night in Bethlehem is all about.

“Reflecting on God’s Peace — Peace with God” It is that word “peace” that can seem to be very confusing today. “Peace” is such a common word. “Peace” is used in almost everyone’s vernacular, everyday, language; but what do we mean by “peace”?

“Peace” — if we look up the word in the dictionary it states that peace can mean: Goodwill — Harmony — Concord — Reconciliation & Freedom… “Peace” can also refer to being calm and quiet, silent and still, in serenity, and tranquility!

Now I know that these are some big words that are used to define “peace”; but what is important for all of us to realize is that it is very important to have “peace” in our life. After all, if we are peaceful, doesn’t that “peace” shape our attitude, and how we behave each, and every, day? Consider it this way: does anyone really like being grumpy, recalcitrant, or a troublemaker? Who really likes to be mean and rude? Or if we reverse the thinking toward others — does anyone like the neighbour, roommate, family member, co-worker… that is stubborn, annoying and does not listen, or play fair?

I realize that undoubtably we are all saying “no” to these questions!

The world’s “peace” does not seem to be a lasting “peace.”

So, what does “peace” really mean?

In the Bible God proclaims peace.

Does God’s peace hold the same meaning, and significance?

Peace with God is what the Bible tells us we should hope for.

Peace with God fully activates love, happiness and joy into our life.

In other words, “God’s peace” fully covers all those dictionary meanings for “peace”!

Goodwill is God’s will for us.

Harmony is God’s sanctuary surrounding us with love. Will we acknowledge God’s presence in tranquility and serenity?

Concord — this is the bond, the promise, and covenant, that God has made for us and with us, and God will never break a promise!

Reconciliation — this is the peace, the gift of love, God gave us two millennia ago in sending the baby Jesus to dwell with us that first Christmas — Jesus taught us God’s way.

And freedom can only ever truly be achieved if we give ourselves over fully to God’s mercy and grace.

That is why the angels all sang so happily when Jesus was born, because God decided to come and be with us. The angels sang, “Glory to God and peace on earth…” Those angels were singing: “Be happy and glad, because God loves you & God will save you.”

Oh God, may we be captive to your peace – may we treat our neighbours as we would like to be treated!

In Venice, tens of thousands of people get together for an outdoor celebration and kiss at midnight. cake is served on New Year’s Eve. Whoever gets the slice with a gold coin in it is king or queen for the day. But they also have the responsibility to host the New Year’s party the following year.

On a recent holiday, my son and daughter-in-law discovered that people in Thailand celebrate their New Year festival in April, marking the end of the dry season. They take to the streets for a three-day water fight, and everyone gets soaked!

Meanwhile, on New Year’s Day in Siberia, divers take to the negative-49-degree water and set up a decorated fir tree on the floor of a lake.

In Ecuador, citizens walk around their houses or around the block at midnight, pulling their suitcases. This tradition is supposed to bring safe travels in the new year.

The cold New Year in Japan is warmed up with a hot bowl of soup on New Year’s Eve. The longer the noodle, the longer your life will be.

people there don’t celebrate Christmas on December 24 and 25, but have similar traditions to ring in the New Year.

December 25 is a regular workday, but schools are closed for two weeks around the New Year’s holiday.

Every household decorates a fir tree, and they enjoy a big family dinner on December 31 with lots of food, including caviar and traditional salads. At midnight, they turn on their televisions, watch the main clock on Moscow’s Red Square, and celebrate the countdown with champagne and fireworks.

Grandpa Christmas visits the children, but he is a more serious version of Santa. He is generally tall, wearing a long red or blue coat, and has a long pointed beard. He gives gifts to kids who are behaving well. His helper is his blonde granddaughter, who helps hand out presents. Parents also have gifts underneath the fir tree for their children to open on New Year’s Day. As we celebrate the New Year, we all remember last year like it was yesterday. I can assure you I won’t be celebrating by eating 12 grapes, sucking long noodles, throwing a hard loaf of bread at my house, going for a polar dip, or throwing dishes at a friend’s front door.

I prefer to trust in wise proverbs like this one: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

“Touch heart” words The word of the year, as voted on by the Oxford English Dictionary, is rage-bait: “combining the words rage, meaning a violent outburst of anger, and bait, an attractive morsel of food. Although a close parallel to the etymologically related clickbait, rage-bait has a more Pop89 specific focus on evoking By Madonna Hamel anger, discord, and polarization.”

Merriam-Webster announced that their “human editors” (as opposed to their monkeys, algorithms, or AI editors? We now have to clarify whether or not a human is making decisions on our behalf) chose the word: slop.

They defined “slop” as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence.” They went on to say: “The flood of slop in 2025 included absurd videos, off-kilter advertising images, cheesy propaganda, fake news that looks pretty real, junky AI-written books… and lots of talking cats.” The problem is, while “people found it annoying… people ate it up.”

What is it about us that makes us jump at anything that promises to enrage and annoy us? Does it make us feel better than the ones engaged in the bad behavior? Or does it justify our hatred of them? Does hating make us feel safe, better, stronger, right? Or is it that we’ve been stooping so low for so long we forgot what it feels like to be upright? To be gentlefolk, to comport ourselves with dignity and grace.

Last year’s word was polarization. This is where we take a side and then blame the opposite side for engaging in “polarization.” It’s a prerequisite for the making of rage-bait and slop. You hunker down and build your arsenal behind your wall, fence, or gated community and start collecting ammunition. This is war, and you are fighting the enemy until your very last mud-sling.

Merriam-Webster reported another often-lookedup term from last year: Touch Grass. They wrote: “After the murder of Charlie Kirk, Governor Spencer Cox spoke passionately about the dangers of social media and urged people to log off, turn off, touch grass, hug a family member, go out and do good in the community.”

I’m old enough to remember not having a computer or a cell phone—which means I’m lucky enough, too. I was 46 years old when my producer made me use a company cellphone because I was reporting from the road. I hated having to carry a phone while on the road—the whole point of the road was to get away from the world!

We don’t just use our phones to keep in touch anymore; we use them to keep us busy, distracted, noisy in our heads. They are sidearms—we arm ourselves with them—keeping fear and depression at bay.

The governor makes sense. Sociologist Jonathan Haidt reminds us that play used to be the purview of childhood. But play-based childhood is being replaced with a screen-based life. And they’re suffering because of it. But it’s not just them—adults suffer from isolation, depression, sleep deprivation, and addiction when we spend huge swaths of time on the phone.

Not to mention nature-deprivation.

Author Paul Kingsnorth sees cell phones as “a disruptor of solitude, which is essential to a spiritual life.” And I’d add, if we can’t go to bed without our cells talking us to sleep (anyone remember lullabies?) and being the first connection we make in the morning, when are we alone with our own thoughts?

modify their future actions for profit. Cell phones are ideal for this because they are everywhere and always with us. They have advanced tracking capabilities.”

Today we say, so what? We like it. I’ve written about this before. But now I want to talk about alternatives.

I don’t want to contribute to making “polarization,” “slop,” or “rage-bait” the most popular word of next year. I want to talk solution rather than problem.

There is a heartlessness to rage-baiting — a hardheartedness which is a form of cowardice and selfishness. There is a mean-spiritedness to rage-baiting too.

And it’s not just idiots, but clever people, armed with provocation under the guise of righteous indignation.

Either way, it’s about putting time and energy into a hard-headed us-and-them war.

I want to drive to the top of the 2026 list: disarming words, cozy words, words about nature and long walks with friends and family, bundled in a parka, stopping for hot cocoa, or staying indoors, sitting under a blanket by a fire with a book. I want to put words of wonder and constructive words to ascend to the top. Ploughshare words, not sword words. “Touch Grass,” “Touch Heart” words.

Of course, we don’t need to wait for Oxford or Merriam-Webster to give us a word. Every New Year’s Eve, my family chooses a word to live by. I think I’ll choose heart.

This year, may I remember to move from my head to my heart. And learn to stay open even when it hurts— especially when it hurts—so that I can be willing, as Hannah Arendt recommended, “to hear the inherent truth inside the other’s opinion.”

I’ll leave you with the words of Pope Leo, as he seems to be one of the few sane people on the planet these days: “Sometimes, at the end of days full of activities, we feel empty. Why? Because we are not machines; we have a heart. Indeed, we can say that we are a heart. The heart is the symbol of all our humanity, the sum of our thoughts, feelings, and desires, the invisible center of our selves…

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Just a gal from Glidden Do Not Be Afraid: There Is Good News

“Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today the Oyen Echo has met its saviour. She is Kate Winquist. Hallelujah!”

Those words, written by Diana Walker on the front page of the Dec. 17, 2020, Oyen Echo, feel like yesterday—though five years have passed. It’s hard to believe that half a decade ago, I stepped in to take over a weekly community newspaper many thought was destined to fold. In doing so, I jokingly earned the title of “saviour of newspapers” in west-central Saskatchewan and east-central Alberta. After all, only six months earlier I had launched Your West Central Voice from scratch, following the closure of the Kindersley Clarion in February 2020.

It’s a title I take lightly. The need, however, is very real. Last week, the Carlyle Observer published its final edition on Dec. 18 after 89 years of operation. Earlier this year, the Estevan Mercury ceased publication after 122 years. Saskatchewan has seen a sharp decline in local journalism, with dozens of newspapers closing or consolidating as advertising revenues shift and digital media rises.

Some notable recent closures include: • Carlyle Observer: Closed Dec. 18 after 89 years.

• Estevan Mercury: Ceased publication Jan. 1 after 122 years.

• Estevan Web Printing: The province’s last newspaper press, closed earlier this year.

• Kindersley Clarion: 110-year-old weekly, closed 2020.

• Moose Jaw Times-Herald: 128-year-old daily, closed in 2017.

• Saskatchewan Valley News: Closed in 2017 after 114 years.

The trend is clear: hundreds of local outlets across Canada have shut down since 2008, with community newspapers among the hardest hit. Large media chains increasingly consolidate or close underperforming print operations, focusing on digital assets.

This fall, the Rosetown Eagle teetered on the brink of closure. Once again, I had the opportunity to step in, as I did with the Oyen Echo in 2020. It begs the question: if I hadn’t, would anyone else have? Each closure underscores just how fragile local journalism has become—

and how easily communities can lose their own stories.

We’ve weathered the storm (so far) by focusing on hyper-local content. Independent newspapers like ours play a vital role in keeping readers informed about what’s happening in their communities. We cover local events, news, and issues that larger media outlets might overlook. We focus on our community’s unique stories and ensure that voices are heard and remembered.

Our work isn’t without challenges. We have a small but dedicated team, which means important stories sometimes go uncovered—not because they aren’t important, but because resources are stretched thin. Joan Janzen, Patti Moran, Greg Paulhus, Diana Walker, Ian MacKay, David McIver—and my husband, Robert, and I—keep the presses rolling and the stories alive, rain or shine, sleet or snow, and yes, even through postal strikes.

Fun fact: our newsroom qualifies for the senior’s discount almost everywhere. Greg and I are the “young ones,” while the rest of the team brings enough collective wisdom, mileage and well-earned coffee breaks to fill several decades. Experience is something we have in abundance—but finding and nurturing the next generation of journalists remains a challenge we continue to face.

So yes, I may have “saved” a paper or two, but we all know who the real Saviour is—and He happens to be celebrating His birthday this week.

Oyen Chamber wraps up busy late-night shopping season with Christmas Market

The Oyen & District Chamber of Commerce’s last evening of late-night shopping was a busy one.

Ten vendors, including the Clay Cup, joined the Christmas Market.

The big man himself — Santa — took some time out of his extremely busy schedule to help celebrate the season.

Tracy Hudson graciously took photos of 36 children and one special puppy who came to tell Santa what they wanted for

their Christmas stockings.

Moms and dads brought toys in lieu of payment for the photos. All the toys were donated to the Big Country Hospital. When little ones have to attend the hospital, they can choose a toy to help make their stay a little easier.

All in all, it was a terrific Christmas season. The Oyen & District Chamber of Commerce would like to wish all its friends and neighbours a very merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year.

Lemon cannoli Serve this elegant Sicilian dessert at Christmas or on New Year’s Eve and get ready to be showered with compliments.

INGREDIENTS Makes 12 cannoli • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon white sugar • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small cubes • 1 egg

• 3 tablespoons dry white wine • Oil for frying (canola or peanut) • 1 ½ cups ricotta cheese • ½ cup icing sugar • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract • Zest of one lemon • 1 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. In a bowl, combine the flour, white sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the butter and rub together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Stir in the egg and white wine. Then, form into a smooth dough.

2. Knead the dough lightly and wrap it in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 min.

3. Roll out the dough to about two millimetres thick and cut into circles about 10 centimetres in diameter. Wrap each piece around a cannoli mould (or a metal tube), then seal with a little water.

4. Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven to 350 F and fry the shells for one to two minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and let cool before removing from the moulds.

5. Whisk the ricotta with the icing sugar, vanilla and lemon zest until smooth.

Add mini chocolate chips, if desired. Refrigerate for 15 to 30 minutes to firm up the filling.

6. Fill the shells just before serving using a piping bag. Sprinkle with icing sugar.

INGREDIENTS Servings: 4

Prosciutto and burrata crostini

• 4 slices of artisan bread, toasted • 2 tablespoons butter • 8 slices prosciutto • One ball burrata cheese, cut into 4 portions • 2 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon hot sauce • A few sprigs fresh thyme, leaves removed • A few leaves fresh basil, chopped

DIRECTIONS 1. Butter the slices of bread.

2. Place two slices of prosciutto and a portion of burrata cheese on each slice of bread.

3. In a small bowl, combine the honey and hot sauce. Drizzle each crostino with this mixture. Sprinkle with thyme and fresh basil.

4. Serve on a pretty serving board decorated with fresh herbs.

Operation Christmas Stocking

BY DIANA WALKER For years, members of the Oyen & District Health Care Foundation have assembled gift bags for longterm residents, known as Operation Christmas Stocking. This year, bags were added for the active side, anticipating patients over Christmas.

The bags contained personal care items, including a dental care, body wash, lotion, hair care, deodorant, and Kleenex. A few chocolates and a decorated cookie completed the package.

For the active side of the hospital, they assembled four bags with many of the same items, including a decorated cookie. And the kids got a stuffy, crayons, colouring book, and some sweets filled three bags.

Without the many donations from businesses and a local community club, Operation Christmas Stocking would not have been possible.

Helping Albertans this respiratory virus season Alberta’s health system is prepared to manage seasonal pressures as respiratory virus cases rise across the province, according to statements released Thursday by two provincial cabinet ministers.

Primary and Preventative Health Services Minister Adriana LaGrange urged Albertans to take basic steps to protect their health during what she described as a busy time for hospitals and emergency departments.

“As Alberta enters a busy respiratory virus season, we encourage all Albertans to follow preventative health best practices, including staying up to date on immunizations, staying home when sick, and choosing the right care option for their needs,” LaGrange said in a statement.

She reminded residents that many flu cases do not require treatment in hospital emergency departments, noting that community pharmacies, primary care providers, urgent care centres and virtual care services can often provide appropriate care. Albertans with questions about symptoms or care options are encouraged to call 811 or use the province’s 811 Health Link service, which is available around the clock.

LaGrange also thanked health-care workers for their efforts during the winter season.

“We sincerely thank all health care professionals for their dedication, professionalism and tireless work caring for Albertans during this busy time,” she said.

and emergency departments are seeing increased illness related to respiratory viruses, a trend consistent with previous winter seasons.

“Hospitals are seeing higher numbers of patients with confirmed influenza compared to this time last year, while confirmed COVID-19 and RSV cases are comparatively lower,” Jones said.

He added that emergency departments are also dealing with winter-related injuries and a high number of seriously ill patients, but said scheduled procedures and appointments are continuing as planned and surgical sites remain fully operational.

Jones said surge and overcapacity protocols have been activated where needed, including the addition of temporary beds, staff augmentation, reconfigured spaces and the use of virtual hospital supports to allow some patients to recover safely at home.

The province has also expanded capacity by opening additional beds, supporting earlier discharge with enhanced home-care services and coordinating care across hospitals and community settings, Jones said.

“We continue to monitor system pressures closely and we are ready to respond if demand increases further,” he said, adding that additional surge spaces and temporary care areas can be authorized if required.

Jones said front-line health-care teams are working with Acute Care Alberta, Emergency Health Services and community partners to ensure care is available when and where it is needed.

Make safe driving part of your holiday plans With the holiday season in full swing, Alberta’s government is reminding residents to plan ahead and never get behind the wheel while impaired by alcohol or cannabis.

Each December, Alberta roads see increased traffic as people travel to visit family and attend celebrations.

The province says the risk of collisions rises when drivers fail to make safe plans, particularly when alcohol or cannabis is involved.

Over the past five years, more than 3,000 Alberta drivers have been convicted of impaired driving each year.

In 2023, one in 14 drivers involved in a fatal crash was legally impaired, underscoring the potentially deadly consequences.

“Tragedies on our roads are preventable,” the government said in a statement. “They often begin with a single reckless mistake: not having a plan to get home safely.”

Alberta enforces some of Canada’s strictest impaired driving laws. Penalties include large fines, vehicle suspensions of up to 30 days, and mandatory ignition interlock devices for at least one year. Police can also lay Criminal Code charges that may result

Final curtain for Dancing with the Stars fundraiser The Dancing with the Stars fundraiser held on December 13 at the Legion Hall will retire after this sixth and final show. It has featured laughs, dance moves and brave contestants who each paired with one or more All-Stars to execute their talent and entertain the audience.

Tonya Logan’s dance group, Small Town Showstoppers, has fundraised all year for their much-anticipated Toronto trip, July 17-20, 2026. They will attend and perform at Medieval Times Dinner and the CN Tower, and more. The dancers will participate in a celebrity master class workshop, sightsee, attend a Broadway show, visit Niagara Falls, and enjoy a Toronto Harbour dinner cruise. Some plan to stay longer to see a Blue Jays game. This will be a memory-maker for all the members of the Small Town Showstoppers.

The Tumbleweed Tree in the Dug-Out “Home”

I learned something of courage in the face of adversity on my most memorable Christmas. It happened 42 years ago in a makeshift home dug into the side of a small hill on the prairie.

My husband and I had planned to spend the holiday quietly in our tworoom home near Cereal, a village 200 miles east of Calgary. The weather had turned cold. Clouds scudded across the DENTURE sky, and there was a hint of a storm in the air.

Suddenly the stoneboat slewed into a rock. We pitched headlong into a snowdrift. Fortunately for us, the team stood by. We shook the snow off and clambered back on the stoneboat. With the storm gathering force, Joe relied more and more on the horses to find the way home.

The team shambled to a halt at dusk.

I never thought a bleak hillside dugout could look so much like a haven.

The living quarters had a cozy warmth, and considering the circumstances, appeared to be quite comfortable. Joe Brown had been a cabinet maker in England. The furniture showed excellent craftsmanship. He fairly beamed when he showed the little cradle he had built that morning. It contained a tiny straw tick and downy blankets.

Sarah Brown was apologetic: “We feel badly about bringing you from home,” she murmured. “But I am glad you could come. The doctor seems so far away.”

The young couple already had one child, a wee girl sleeping on a cot. My eyes blurred at the sight of an empty white stocking pinned to the end of her pillow.

It was Christmas Eve. “How about a tree?” I asked, even though I knew there wasn’t a tree for miles. Sarah Brown reached behind the curtains and brought out the largest tumbleweed I have ever laid eyes on.

“Our tree,” she announced with pride. Soon, the three of us were busy with the trimming. We set the tumbleweed in the centre of the table, popped corn over red coals, strung it and hung loops on curving branches. Silver paper from a box of biscuits was fashioned into an angel holding a star. This was wired to the top, and beneath it, my red glass beads sparkled in the light from the kerosene lamp.

Who would have thought a Russian thistle could look so lovely? The excitement of Christmas crept into the home. Next, we tackled the white stocking. We filled it with a little doll fashioned from colored yarn, some sweets and a hair ribbon. Joe pulled out a homemade red sleigh from under the bed.

At last, the young mother-to-be could keep her eyes open no longer. I also decided to get some rest. At two o’clock in the morning, Joe was up, rattling the stove grate, putting more coal into the stove and filling the tea kettle.

Sarah Brown obviously felt deep pain, but she handled it well. Her husband didn’t. Lines of worry creased his face. I resolved to keep him as busy as I could so he wouldn’t have too much time to think about what lay ahead.

It was nearly morning before I was able to utter the words every father yearns to hear: “It’s a boy.”

The baby gave its first, lusty cry. Sarah managed a faint smile of gratitude. Her pleased husband spent what little remained of the night rocking his newborn son with the “red face and the blue, blue eyes.”

There was a beautiful sunrise that morning. The storm had blown over. Fresh snow blanketed the prairie. Later, we heard the approach of a bob-sleigh. My husband had driven over to see if we were all right.

My happiness was complete.

I am 79 years of age now. But whenever I see tumbleweed, I remember a Christmas of long ago and the Browns who, eking out a bare existence from a new homestead, welcomed the birth of a son with joy and courage and faith in the future. ��� This was taken from the book “Down Cereal’s Memory Trails” History Book (1910-1967).

Her journey, like that of so many early settlers, was filled with hardship and perseverance. It’s humbling to remember the sacrifices and resilience of these homesteaders as they built lives from the harsh, unforgiving land.

The tale of Christmas spent in a dugout home with a tumbleweed tree is a powerful reminder of how far people went to find joy, even in the most challenging of circumstances. It’s a lesson worth remembering, especially in these trying times, when we can draw strength from the same spirit of courage and community that helped our ancestors endure.

To avoid the embarrassment, some kids would “accidentally-on-purpose” try to lose the item on the playground. But an eagle-eyed teacher who saw you wearing it at the start of recess would tell you to pick it up and bring it back with you to class. And if you were ever lucky enough to lose it forever, you might still be forced to reclaim it on “lost and found” day at the end of the school year—especially if it had your name tag sewed in the collar.

When my youngest brother got married and had kids, my little niece and nephew had no idea how lucky they were to have our mom as their grandma. She was a cool and enlightened grandma and usually gave her grandkids things they actually wanted for Christmas—rather than things she thought they needed.

Though always given with good intentions, Grandma’s practical Christmas gifts were usually disappointing to us as kids. But that didn’t mean we didn’t love her dearly. When she knew we were coming to visit, she’d bake giant sugar cookies the size of pot lids just for us! She saved the Sunday colour funnies from the newspapers for us to read and did all kinds of other endearing “Grandma” things to show how much we meant to her.

And she always tucked a dollar or two into our birthday cards to help make up for her Christmas gifts—and that was a lot of money back then! So, all in all, we have very fond and happy memories of her being a pretty good Grandma, despite her dreaded but well-meaning Christmas gifts. I smile at the memory now.

To all the other kids out there— both past and present—who have had to endure their grandma’s “practical” Christmas gifts over the years: have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

BCAS donates to the long-term care courtyard

The Big Country Agricultural Society was pleased to present a donation toward the upgrade of the longterm care courtyard. This project is a partnership between Oyen & District Health Care Foundation and Alberta Health Services.

The project includes a larger, safer composite deck with aluminum railing and gate, widened sidewalks, and new roofing and paint for the gazebo. The total

cost is estimated at $85,000, with the foundation committing $47,666.

The organization says each contribution represents a direct investment in the health and well-being of residents, helping to sustain high-quality rural care.

Donations may be made by e-transfer to oyenhealthfoundation@outlook.com, dropped off at the Big Country Hospital front office on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., or mailed to PO Box 1, Oyen, AB T0J 2J0.

During the holidays, we are reminded of the challenges many people face, from struggling to afford basic necessities to the broader difficulties confronting Canada on the world stage. Yet it is the hope we find in the Christmas story which reminds us that even in uncertain times, there is light ahead. The spirit of hope encourages us to persevere and continue to fight for what is right.

While many people are fortunate to enjoy time off with family during holidays, others continue to serve. I want to acknowledge those who will be spending their Christmas on duty.
