Budget 2022: Gov Spends More, Canadians Get Less

The new Liberal-NDP Coalition recently tabled Budget 2022 entitled, “A Plan to Grow Our Economy and Make Life More Affordable.” Unfortunately, the budget holds the Canadian economy back, panders to leftist elites who fund their election campaigns, exacerbates the inflation crisis, and proves yet again that they are all style and no substance. Higher taxes, higher inflation, and empty promises are all hall-

marks of the Liberals’ fiscal malfeasance contained within this budget.

The budget is a compilation of Liberal excuses for the poor state of the economy: the state of Canada’s inflation is an “international issue”, and supply chains were impeded by lockdowns and other COVID-related matters. Industries, such as agriculture, have suffered immensely due to the issues of getting their commodities and products to market, and are now being forced to do more with

less as they continue to be an afterthought for this LiberalNDP Government.

The Liberals’ lack of understanding of the rural industries that make Canada prosperous is staggering. Strong action to advocate for Canadian oil and gas, agriculture, and other key industries, is missing in this budget. The Liberals have reiterated their call to transition away from the oil and gas sector, which clearly displays Chrystia Freeland’s lack of regard for Canada’s ethical

oil. This is at a time when Vladimir Putin is funding the destruction of Ukraine by using proceeds from Russia’s oil and gas transactions with democracies such as Canada and the United States. The world needs to transition to Canadian oil where human rights are respected, the environment is greatly considered when developing resource projects, and where proceeds fund hospitals, schools, and the other integral programs we use every day.

Kurek: Report from the Legislature

CONTINUED FROM FRONT

Despite the Liberal platitudes saying they will invest in the Canadian Armed Forces; they fell short in this budget. According to the most recent Public Accounts, the Liberals lapsed $1.2 billion in defence spending in 2021 alone; and a PBO report released last month shows from 2017-18 to 2020-21, there was a cumulative shortfall of almost $10 billion between what DND spent on capital and they promised after they got elected. Their new commitment works out to only an incremental increase, without recovering unfulfilled spending, and fails to outline the needed procurement of supplies to stand up for Ukraine, defend Canada’s Arctic, replace our fighter fleet, and upgrade our Navy.

The reality of Canada’s economic and fiscal situation is record-high spending for over seven years and an ever-increasing debt burden which the Liberals justified with “we are borrowing more because interest rates are low.” After nearly doubling the national debt over the course of COVID, higher inflation that increases Government revenue, and a massive increase in royalties from the energy, the Liberals still propose a deficit of $52.8 billion. Something that is driving up inflation and hurting Canadians’ bottom lines and the dollar’s purchasing power. In a strange turn, however, they have pivoted their talking points to signal a need to be fiscally responsible. Even though their budget does nothing of the kind, they obviously

are feeling the pressure.

The budget also fails to follow through on the promises to the NDP in a tangible manner on topics such as dentalcare and pharmacare. This casts serious doubts if the Liberal-NDP Government were truly serious about their policy objectives or if it was simply a power grab.

In a bid to escape questions and accountability regarding their budget, the Liberals, in typical fashion, have chosen to present their budget the day before a two-week Parliamentary break. This appears to be an effort to intentionally avoid scrutiny and a political power play. The Liberals continue an “Ottawa-knowsbest” and a “tax-and-spend” approach to fiscal policy, where Canadians pay more, are getting less and will be less secure. Canadians deserve better.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

My Mom and Dad, Ralph and Marvel Jorgenson, subscribe to the Oyen Echo for me, have for many years. I receive it regularly and enjoy reading it front to back.

I did want to mention that I really enjoy Joan Janzen’s contributions. They are current, interesting and enjoyable to read (fact and humour). Mostly, I appreciate the fact that there never appears to be a ‘side’ she is on - except the side of truth. Her articles very clearly outline how so many events are ‘wolves dressed in sheep’s clothing’ in attempt/effort to take the population’s eye off the political ball.

Thank you, Joan, for your ability to keep your eye on the ball in the midst of a widespread lack of transparency in our municipalities, provincial and federal mishmash. And to write about it with such ease and skill which brings the reader straight in.

Sincerely, Vera Jorgenson

The question asked was, “How do we know China has free speech?” The answer: “No one says otherwise.”

Throughout history, leaders acknowledged the value and benefits of free speech. John G. Diefenbaker once said, “Freedom includes the right to say what others may object to and resent ... The essence of citizenship is to be tolerant of strong and provocative words.” He was the

OPINION

CHECK IT OUT with Joan Janzen

Freedom is our heritage

Prime Minister of Canada from 1957-1963.

MP Pierre Poilievre said, “Time and time again I have new immigrants come up to me, and say this is not the country I wanted to come to. One of them even told me that he fled from the kinds of control that he now sees imposed here in this country.”

Former Premier Brad Wall said, “Giving a voice to provinces and First Nations that have

historically felt alienated within the federation, will provide lasting benefits for our country.”

We now live in an era where everybody (not just politicians and the elite) has the opportunity to have their voice heard via social media. So it’s not surprising that Bill C-11, an Internet Censorship Bill is being pushed forward. Viva Frei, a Canadian lawyer and popular YouTuber, said “It clearly intends

to suppress and govern the alternatives to state funded media.”

While Bill C-11 is being reviewed, Canadians are being punished for speaking freely. A 29-year-old teacher in Ontario, who made comments in a private teacher’s group, is experiencing the limits to allowed speech.

She simply said, “Kids aren’t in school to be indoctrinated with critical race theory (CRT). Schools should be non partisan. They should focus on modelling kindness to everyone, and speak out against any form of discrimination you see. This includes the discrimination brought on by anti racist movements. In some places, it is now illegal to teach CRT without offering a balanced, opposing view.” She provided a link to a video clip from parliament in Britain, which gave evidence to her claim.

A few teachers submitted a complaint about her comments, which resulted in a month long investigation. She was also suspended for a week without pay. A full year later, the complaint has escalated. She is currently under further

investigation, with her teaching licence at stake, all because she voiced one well-meaning comment.

When asked how she felt about the investigation, she said, “It’s disappointing that this is being investigated. To me it doesn’t have any merit; we just have a difference of opinion. Living in a free society means the right to speak openly and freely; regardless if we agree or disagree, we should be allowed to speak.”

Rex Murphy said in an article in the National Post, “As an ideal, free expression has been ever present as a guiding star to the proper operation of any democracy.” In 2022 that guiding star is hidden behind a cloud of censorship.

Sixty years ago a Canadian Prime Minister said, “I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.”

Meanwhile, in 2022, Canadians did not choose to be governed

by a Liberal-NDP coalition; it was imposed upon them.

Diefenbaker also said, “We must vigilantly stand on guard within our borders for human rights and fundamental freedoms, which are our proud heritage ... we cannot take for granted the continuance and maintenance of those rights and freedoms.” Six decades later we are seeing what happens when people take those freedoms for granted.

As we near this Easter holiday, many will choose to celebrate by gathering with a family of believers. I pray we don’t take this freedom for granted, and more importantly we don’t take our Saviour and advocate for freedom, for granted. Have an awesome Easter, everyone!

WENZEL - Bryon Kelly

Wenzel of Morse, Saskatchewan, passed away at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, Saskatchewan on Tuesday, March 29th , 2022 at the age of 63 years.

Bryon is survived by his daughter, Tamara Gillis, and her children Stephanie, Tiyana and Mckenzee.

Bryon is also survived by his sister Lorie (Don) Bischop, brother Wade Wenzel. He also leaves to mourn his nieces and nephews Candy Nelsen, Kevin (Danine) Nelsen, Carrie Potter,

He was pre-deceased by his parents Norbert and Doris (Gariepy) Wenzel, and by his sisters Mary Lou, Dale Anne, and Rosalie “Marlene.

Bryon was born July 25th 1958, in Calgary, Alberta to his parents, Norbert and Doris Wenzel, and grew up on the family farm located between Oyen and Esther, Alberta. One of his favourite farm tasks was moving the snow in the yard with the front-end-loader after a fresh snowfall.

Affectionately known as “Rooner” by his friends and family, Bry-

on was somewhat of a hometown celebrity. Everyone knew Bryon! He lived and farmed in the Oyen area for many years but also lived briefly in Hanna Alberta for a time before returning to Oyen. After the passing of his father he moved to Morse, Saskatchewan to be close to his Mom and his sisters.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, building and salvaging. He was a very skilled carpenter and mechanic and was highly sought after for construction jobs. He especially loved clearing snow and mowing grass with his little John Deere tractor and always made time to help a friend or neighbour in need. He will be deeply missed by those that loved him.

Bryon was diagnosed in the summer of 2021 with advanced prostate cancer which had metastasized to his spine and

made it very difficult for him do all the things he loved.

He passed away with family at his side following a surgery for colon cancer that he was unable to recover from.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Suresh Kassett of Herbert, Saskatchewan and the Allan Blair Cancer Centre of Regina, Saskatchewan for their care and support.

Other parts of the Special Areas have had some snow recently, but it remains fairly dry around Youngstown. While I know everyone would like to see more moisture, I’m sure those who have started calving are grateful we aren’t battling blizzard conditions.

This week started off with some excitement as the Big Stone Ladies Club hosted a ham supper on April 3. There were 125 people from the surrounding area, making it a very well-attended evening. The food was excellent and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Hopefully we are able to enjoy some more events like this in the future.

There have also been some things happening at Youngstown School lately. On March 25, there was a large archery tournament in conjunction with Delia, Consort, Berry Creek, Hanna, Altario, Assumption, and Warren Peers. 107 students competed in total.

Congratulations to Vance Laughlin (gold - sr. high boys), Courtney Campbell (bronze - sr. high girls), Brianna MacPherson (silver - jr. high girls), Hannah Beasley (bronze - jr. high girls), Logan Moggridge (gold - jr. high boys), Dalton Powell (silver - jr. high boys), and Jasper Beasley (gold - elem. boys).

On April 1, they also hosted a smaller tournament with Berry Creek and Altario schools. 47 students from all three schools participated in shooting 3D foam animal targets. Youngstown was very well represented, taking home the top scores for sr. high boys (Vance Laughlin), sr. high girls (Courtney Campbell), and elem. boys (Jasper Beasley). Several other students also placed, including Milena Das Neves (bronzesr. high girls), Matheus Furtado (bronze - sr. high boys), Hannah Beasley (silver - jr. high girls), Brianna MacPherson (bronze - jr. high girls), Dalton Powell (silver - jr. high boys), Logan Moggridge (bronze - jr. high boys), and Lilianna Moggridge (silver - elem. girls).

Just a reminder that the Youngstown Kindergarten is selling an assortment of flowers and other plants. Orders are due April 26. Please contact one of the kindergarten moms or visit youngstownkindergarten. growingsmilesfundraising.com to order. It’s a great way to brighten up your house or yard while supporting the kindergarten.

Thanks for reading. Have a good week everybody.

I am sorry this news is a bit late! We were away last week, and I forgot to send this news earlier. However, better late than never.

The sights and sounds of spring are all around us! Geese have returned, and gophers are dashing about. I saw my first new calf earlier this week, and the longer hours and the warmth of sunshine feel delightful.

Congratulations are sent to Tyler and Megan Chiliak on the birth of their second child, a daughter, Celia Margaret Chiliak. Celia arrived on March 15 and weighed in at 8 lbs 4 oz. Local Sibbald youth involved in hockey are Brayden Brockmann, Baxton Mundt, Dylan Woods, Brandt, Brianna and Macy Lyster, Winston Smith, and Dylan and Bentley Robertson. Shayelle Robertson played with the Consort Coronation Castor allgirls hockey team.

Dance competition season is underway too.

Dancing with Miss Sherri and the Wilson School of Dance are Olivia and Joelle Mundt. At the Leader Festival on March 12, Olivia took Platinum (mark of 90% or higher) for a hip hop duet. The girls’ tap and jazz groups won Gold. At a later competition in Drumheller, the girls took the same awards, a Platinum and two Golds.
