Oyen & District Food Bank announces poster winners

When Chloe Proudfoot heard the Oyen & District Food Bank needed help, she said, “Let’s make posters!”

From that statement, the teachers at Assumption Roman Catholic School created a contest for the best poster.

Food Bank member Imogene Hauck and Oyen Echo reporter Diana Walker attended the December 2 assembly where the winners were announced.

The Assumption students have started their own food bank collection. See, even the children can help!

Imogene has received a few baby items and some Ensure, thanks to donors this Christmas. If you have cash or food item donations, drop them at the FCSS office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Prairie Wind Milling announces opening of new state-of-the-art seed and grain cleaning plant Prairie Wind Milling (PWM) is excited to announce the upcoming commissioning of its new, state-of-the-art seed and grain cleaning facility in Oyen, Alberta. The new plant, which has been under construction since the company acquired the Acadia Seed Cleaning Coop in September 2021, marks a significant milestone in PWM’s growth and commitment to providing new state-ofthe-art seed and grain cleaning plant The new facility is a cutting-edge, twin-line cleaning plant equipped with the latest in cleaning and optical colour sorting technology. This advanced equipment will allow PWM to offer enhanced processing capabilities for a variety of crops, with a primary focus on lentils, durum, and peas. Additionally, the facility will be capable of cleaning

and processing other pulse crops, as well as niche cereal and oilseed crops.

With a focus on adding value to western Canadian agriculture, the plant will provide growers with an efficient and reliable option for upgrading their products for sale to processors, wholesalers, and retailers in both domestic and international markets.

“We are excited to bring this new facility online, which will be a key asset for the region’s agriculture sector,” said Charles Allen, Plant Manager at PWM’s new facility. “With our advanced cleaning and processing equipment, we’re looking forward to offering local growers the opportunity to enhance the value of their crops, as well as expanding our capacity for export markets through our direct rail access. I love working in the

grain industry. The producers are very proud of what they do and give respect to those they work with.”

The new plant, strategically located on a rail line, offers the added benefit of facilitating export capabilities, providing local growers with an accessible and cost-effective route for sending cleaned grains to both domestic and international markets.

PWM’s Oyen facility will begin commissioning in November 2024, with contracted lots slated for processing.

The experienced team, led by Charles Allen, will continue to build on PWM’s strong reputation for quality and service. Allen, a local resident of Oyen with 9 years of experience in cleaning cereals and pulses for export and further processing, will oversee operations at the

new plant.

In addition, PWM will continue to operate its current seed cleaning facility under the leadership of Tyrone Maines, who will continue to serve regional growers with seed cleaning services until 2025. At that time, Tyrone will transition to the new facility, ensuring continuity of service and a seamless handover to the new operations.

“We are confident that the combined experience and expertise of Charles and Tyrone will ensure the continued delivery of exceptional service to local farmers,” said PWM spokesperson.

“Our goal is to support the agricultural community and strengthen the value chain for western Canadian crops, and this new facility is a key part of that vision.”

Faith communities are the backbone of many charities

BY JOAN JANZEN It’s the season for giving, and kids have their lists ready. One parent said that every year, her son asks for a Costco-size box of hot pockets, and his grandparents happily oblige.

Another mom said her four-year-old daughter asked for two things: a green present with a yellow star and a box of Raisin Bran. “So I bought her a box of Raisin Bran, wrapped it in green paper, and made a yellow star to put on it,” her mom said. “You would have thought she won the lottery, she was so happy.”

Sometimes, it doesn’t take much to make people happy, and this is the season where many charities are doing their best to do just that. December is also acknowledged as Christian Heritage Month in over 40 cities and municipalities across Canada, a time to recognize the contribution of faith communities.

Many charities are provided by churches throughout Canada. “No doubt there would be a gaping hole without the faith community who help those in need in our communities,” Faytene Grasseschi from Faytene TV observed. “They are the backbone of many charities.”

One of those charities is called CityServe, a network of charities and

non-profit organizations that receive and redistribute new donated goods to people who need them in communities across Canada.

Pastor Randy Neilson from Brampton, Ontario said the organization began in Canada three years ago, when he was approached by friends in the US. “I was approached by friends in the CityServe in the States who were receiving gifts in kind of all kinds from retailers, and they invited Canada to come on board,” he explained. Now, they are sharing $70 million worth of products with charities across the country.

Now, truckloads of goods from retailers all over the world go to warehouses at Niagara, Brampton, Windsor, Sudbury, Bradford, Ottawa, and Montreal. In western Canada, distribution hubs are located in Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Regina, Saskatoon, and Prince Albert. “We are in central part of Canada where there is lots of retail activity, but we have a gap in Manitoba and Alberta,” Pastor Neilson said.

“We would love to be in BC, but it has a difficulty we’re working on.” BC’s provincial government charges PST on gifts in kind donations. “We have partners on the ground, and we’re ready to go; we just need the government to change their policy,” he said.

Another challenge is transportation, since it’s very expensive to move products from province to province. They could also use some extra warehouse space in some areas and welcome charities that can accept truckloads of goods.

“We are being blessed with an abundance of goods; there is no lack right now,” he said.

Pastor Neilson would love to see more local churches have CityServe spaces in their churches, becoming little warehouses where their members could redistribute goods to people in need in their communities. “They could become the hands and feet of Jesus” he said.

And that is what Christmas is all about. Someone once said this quote: “Do as much good as you can, as long as you can, any way you can, wherever you can, for anyone you can, until you no longer can.”

New products are donated by major retailers from all over the world, and the

biggest benefit is families in need are being blessed with goods they can’t afford. Pastor Neilson shared one of the thousands of examples.

“We were working with a boys and girls club, and I got a couple of laptops,” he said. “We very seldom receive computers, but I was able to bring it to a young girl heading to high school. She was living in a challenging neighbourhood, number five in the family, and never thought she would have a laptop.”

New products are often donated because of packaging changes. “They’re all brand new items and we’re blessed to give them out to other charities that really care for the community. It’s amazing!” Pastor Neilson concluded.

Pop89: 100 kinds of hope

BY MADONNA HAMEL Hope has a checkered past, a sullied reputation.

We’d like to trust hope, we raise it to dizzying heights, and then, so often, it falls. For every kid who can’t quite show up for his own life, there’s a Grandma who knows the world would be worse off without him.

She’d rather have high hopes than low expectations.

My own relationship with hope is spotty. At the moment a red velvet Christmas ornament, with the word “Hope” embroidered in gold, hangs from my lamp.

On my table is my Advent wreath- with four candles, one for each week of the season. The first candle I light every morning is the candle of “hope”.

I must admit hope is one virtue I find awkward to admit to. I’m both embarrassed and touched by it. Perhaps it comes from those years spent trying to practise Buddhism, when I came to see hope as illusion.

It keeps us out of the present moment, pitches us forward into a highly anticipated plan for the future. It’s not very brave or practical, I thought. Better to stay in the day than saddle myself with “the burden of hope’, as my brother sometimes refers to it.

But I wonder if hope isn’t just a human response to love - or wanting the best for the people we love, including ourselves? It gets us out of bed. And, as a Catholic school girl, I was taught it is a virtue, right up there with faith and love. The word “virtue”, comes from the Old French, meaning “force,” “vigour,” “strength of character” and even “courage” - the opposite of what I’d come to believe.

Some of us may have great reserves of hope, but regardless, we all need to work at it. Hope requires attention. And, quite frankly, we’d rather put our efforts elsewhere- like preparing for the moment when somebody or something inevitably lets us down. Again. Hope

feels like a trap. And besides, “vices” have more cache.

In a glib and cynical world, vice is the cooler pursuit.

However, vices, by their nature, tend to blossom into addictions. But vice has a mega-public relations team behind it. For all the contempt we might feel for pushy evangelicals, they can never outdo the evangelizing PR machine of consumerism - promising a world of excitement, youth, popularity and beauty. No one wants to be preached at. Everyone, it appears, wants to be seduced.

Like most addictions, anticipation is everything.

When you are suddenly caught in a situation where real vice is present, you learn, very quickly that everyone is in it for themselves, and there’s ever enough “it” to go around. People who think hell is where all the “fun” people go, have yet to visit there.

I recall a young woman telling me that the kind of men she preferred were “the bad boys”. I countered with: “you know what a bad boy is, right? He’s a guy who behaves badly and doesn’t feel he needs to be responsible to the people he harms, BECAUSE HE’S A BOY.” No doubt she assumed he’d instantly see the light with a catch like her. The hubris of addiction tells her: you’ll be more than enough for him, you’ll be the one who changes him. She could be; miracles happen.

Or she’s consciously planning to turn him into her little project, after the “thrill” of dating a “bad boy” wears off. I suppose that’s a kind of hope. But it’s a kind of delusional confidence in one’s abilities. Better to stop falling for “bad boys” and hope for a “grown man”.

Where hope runs afoul is when we think that’s all we need to do - hand the whole thing over to hope.

I remember talking to a man with forty years of recovery. I asked him if he believed that some people are hopeless - his answer: “Hope springs eternal.” His response brought more questions: Springs from what?

a transcendent hope. Can you have hope without faith? Some people say the reverse, you can’t have faith without hope. Or, put another way, hope is what you have until you get your faith, whether you lost it or never had. And even then- faith in what? I suspect something bigger than the “bad boy” or the newest weight-loss drug or anything “trending”.

The opposite of hope is despair. Which happens to be a vice. I remember when I was taught that despair was a major sin - it seemed so unfair. “Oh great, I’m in deep despair and I’m sinning as well, thanks, Ye Comforter.” But when you look at the meaning of the word “sin”: “to miss your mark and lose you way”- it becomes clear to me that despair is the ultimate loss, short of losing one’s life.

That we consider despair a sin is not a punishment.

But a flag of warning: don’t go there! The crossing guard-angel of the school of life is holding up his stop sign and saying: don’t step out into oncoming traffic!

This too shall pass. To do so is to betray yourself, to rob us of you. You belong. Stay put until the coast is clear. Then try again. You are part of this big lesson we are all learning.

Theologian Cynthia Bourgeault says hope: “is a quality of aliveness. It does not come at the end, as the feeling that results from a happy outcome. Rather, it lies at the beginning, as a pulse of truth that sends us forth.” And you enter hope through surrender; through the willingness to let go of everything we are presently clinging to. Then, hope enters us and fills us with its own life—a quiet strength beyond anything we have ever known.”

Perhaps Emily Dickinson says it best: “Hope is the thing with feathers – That perches in the soul – And sings the tune without words – And never stops at all.”

A Crossroads Museum Story – Part 3 continued

This is an ongoing summary of news events concerning the Gerard Peck family in 1936.

Mrs. Annie Peck led prayers at the “World Day of Prayer” in Oyen in early March. Her “window of homegrown plants, most of them raised by herself, was an attractive feature” at the Anglican Women’s Auxiliary Easter Tea and sale of plants held a few weeks later.

On May 13 she attended the Women’s Auxiliary Convention of West Kindersley Deanery held at Alsask. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Peacock who left the district, Mrs. Peck presided as vice-president. There were 38 members and delegates attending from as far away as Hemaruka, Empress, and Lanfine.

Mrs. Peck’s address as president was very interesting, telling of the great work done by the staff of the hospital at Aklavik and of the great need of supplies since the fire that wiped out all their equipment. The collections taken at this meeting was donated to this hospital. In the election of officers that followed, Mrs. Peck became the president.

On August 27, 1936, the Hanna Herald published the following item: “Fine Farm Home In Oyen District May Soon Be But Memory.”

“Messrs. D.A. Peck and G.S. Peck, well known residents of the Oyen district, passed through Hanna on Monday on a trip west to Stettler, Three Hills, and Olds as well as other districts. Mr. Peck Jr. informed the Herald that he may secure an acceptable farm location on this trip and, if so, will move from the Oyen district shortly. The Peck farm home on the Hanna-Oyen highway presents one of the finest appearances that might be seen anywhere in Alberta. The residence is one of the finest, without doubt, to be found on the prairies. It is the intention of Mr. Peck to wreck the residence as well as the out-buildings and move them to whatever new location is settled on.”

A Social Credit government led by William Aberhart was elected on August 22, 1935, winning 56 of

63 seats in the Alberta Legislative Assembly. Many changes occurred, one being the dismissal of many police magistrates. Magistrate W.P. Roberts of Hanna was forced to resign on September 24, 1936.

As the Hanna Herald reported two weeks later: “Magistrate at Oyen resigns upon request”; S.C. Government Asks for Resignation of Police Magistrate.”

“Another magistrate fell before the axe of the Social Credit government on September 28 when Magistrate Gerard Peck for twelve years Police Magistrate at Oyen was asked for his resignation. Charging that Mr. Peck was a non-cooperator or that he had no confidence in the present government, the Police Magistrate was asked to tender his resignation and return his commission.”

The Herald published Gerard Peck’s letter of res-

ignation sent to George B. Henwood, Deputy Attorney General which included this comment: “As you suggest, I cannot feel any confidence in the Social Credit theories, but I fail to appreciate any connection between these theories and my duty under oath as a Magistrate.”

The editor added this comment – “Mr. Peck has held the position of Police Magistrate in Oyen for 12 years during which time he contributed much to the interests of justice. He is a man of sterling quality and has handled his position on the bench with fairness and kindness to all who came under his jurisdiction.

At present, no announcement has been made with respect to appointment of a new police magistrate at Oyen.”

This many-faceted museum story continues.

Golf putting brakes on ball flight distance

The world of professional golf is set to undergo a major transformation within the next two years, as the two major governing bodies — the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient — have decided to go ahead with ‘rolling back’ the golf ball.

BY BRUCE PENTON Sports Columnist Nothing in cast in stone ____________ about the rollback, but USGA CEO Mike Whan says the change will be made starting in 2028. After myriad studies, the two golf bodies came to the conclusion that the ever-increasing distance today’s best players were getting off the tee was relegating some of the world’s best courses to ‘pitch and putts’. Cameron Champ led the PGA Tour in driving distance in 2024 at 322.8 yards. Rory McIlroy was second at 320.2 and the top 102 golfers managed to exceed, on average, the 300yard mark. Throw in a good downwind on some long par-5s and some of the longer hitters would be looking at a pitching wedge or less for their second shots.

The change is coming, according to the governing bodies, but details have yet to be worked out. Golf ball manufacturers are not totally on board, and debate rages about whether the golf ball rollback will apply to the overall game — pros and amateurs alike — or whether there will be two types of balls: The rolledback pro version and the still-explosive amateur kind.

Most of today’s best golf courses were built decades ago, when a long-hitting golfer might pound out a 270-yard drive. Today, some of those courses have become obsolete because of the tremendous distances the world’s best golfers are realizing. Of course, better fitness and athleticism has led to the distance explosion, too, but those in charge of the game’s direction feel that rolling back the golf ball would be the best course of action to bring top-notch skill back into the game.

Which leads one to wonder what other sports might do to protect the integrity of their games: — If scoring became too prevalent in the National Hockey League, would there be an outcry to reduce the width of the net? Or, if scoring dropped off, could the net be widened?

would be the appropriate height for the basket. (Why is it 10 feet? The game’s inventor, James Naismith, placed his first hoop on a gymnasium railing, which was 10 feet off the ground.)

While the golf ball is generally regarded as the culprit in the distance debate, some people are looking at golf club manufacturers as being equally culpable.

Technology advances lead the likes of Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist and Srixon to advertise to the world that their clubs provide the distance a golfer needs to shoot lower scores.

The longer the ball goes, the bigger the course must be built. And the more land that’s required, the more expense it requires to water and maintain the grounds.

It has to slow down somewhere. And like it or not, it’s starting with the ball rollback.

Super-charged conversation touts Alberta tourism

How well is tourism doing in Alberta? Well enough that you may want to say “super” when you discuss the multi-billion-dollar industry.

The province has a “super big goal” for tourism to reach $25 billion in visitor spending by 2035, Jason Stephan, the member for Red Deer-South, said Nov. 21.

Alberta is beautiful in “both its places and its peoples,” Stephan said, so it’s little wonder tourists from across Canada and around the world choose to visit.

Responded Joseph Schow, the minister of tourism and sport: “Dare I say that it’s

super duper to be in Alberta right now?”

Tourist spending in 2023 totalled $12.7 billion, said Schow, who represents Cardston-Siksika in southern Alberta. That’s a 20 per cent increase, and $3 billion of the total comes courtesy international tourists. The industry is responsible for more than 260,000 Alberta jobs.

Schow continued that “we’re doing things right and our plan is working,” crediting the record-setting year to the efforts of entrepreneurs, government partners and other “amazing people” developing the tourism product.

The government introduced a bill Nov. 7 aimed at allowing responsible

and sustainable development of yearround resorts on Alberta Crown land.

The All-Season Resort Act would also cut red tape and streamline approvals, the UCP says. Second reading of Bill 35 passed Dec. 2.

“We’re going to continue to show that Alberta is the best place to live, to play and to visit,” said Schow.

The combination of both parts of Schow’s portfolio — tourism and sport — was not lost in the super-charged conversation.

Stephan said Alberta is home to “super-duper athletes” and a destination for sports fans.

Canadian Finals Rodeo, which returned to Edmonton Oct. 2-5 for the first year of a planned three-year commitment.

The province invested in the rodeo, which saw attendance of about 42,000 over four days and drove the Alberta economy with a $30-million boost and 5,500 jobs. Alberta hosts other international events supported by the government’s major sporting events grant.

Said Schow: “We’ve heard it from Albertans – they want to explore more of their backyard – we’ve heard it from Canadians, and we’ve heard it from international visitors. Everybody wants more Alberta, and we’re going to give it to them.”

Support for Students: Survey results also highlighted that 89.3% of stakeholders are satisfied with the access to support services, exceeding the provincial average by 9.4%. This is a reflection of CTR’s commitment to ensuring that students receive the assistance they need to succeed, including investment in educational assistants, mental health supports, and learning intervention.

By establishing buffer zones and visual impact assessment zones, Alberta’s government is ensuring that industrial power projects the size of the Calgary Tower cannot be built in front of UNESCO World Heritage sites and other specified viewscapes, which will support the continued growth and success of Alberta’s tourism sector.

As Alberta’s population and economy grows, it is critical that the province has the additional power generation needed to meet increasing demand.

Power generation must be developed in a balanced and responsible manner that promotes environmental stewardship, ensures the continued enjoyment of Alberta’s beautiful landscapes, and safeguards food security by protecting Alberta’s valuable agricultural lands.

By encouraging the responsible development of additional power generation with these new regulations, Alberta’s government is listening to Albertans and ensuring the electricity grid is affordable, reliable and sustainable for generations to come.

The following are excerpts taken from a blog posted by wheresmyambulance.com, which state all the information provided was attained through Freedom of Information requests from Alberta Health Services or previously published media stories. The group’s stated mission is to provide citizens with statistics and information about their local ambulance services. Their blog posts are written by Don Sharpe and George Porter.

“Our blog post reveals alarming issues, including overuse of EMS for non-urgent transfers. These problems directly impact local residents and their access to timely emergency care,” observed a group representative who goes by the alias Ambulance-man. Here are some of the findings posted on November 28, 2024, specifically within the Southeast and Central areas, which includes the communities of Oyen and Hanna.

In a chart entitled full-time employees who transferred to casual positions, it was reported during the years from 2019-2023, thirty-one paramedics had transferred to casual employment. “Those losses translate into ambulance coverage that’s disappeared,” the article notes.

A chart displayed the number of instances when ambulance units were unavailable due to staffing vacancies. “These are the moments when paramedics, after enduring 12 to 14 gruelling hours, have no choice but to tap out - not because they want to, but because they have to. Fatigue doesn’t just pose a health risk it’s a liability,” the article says. It continues to explain why this matters.

“So, if there’s an emergency and they’ve hit their limit, your local ambulance can’t answer the call - because they’ve been stretched thin handling non-urgent transfers.” Oyen was listed as having 52 instances of

This December, and always, look out for one another. If you suspect an impaired driver, call 911 immediately. You never know whose life you could be saving.”

December is often a month full of celebrations with family and friends. If you’re partaking in holiday festivities this season, make sure to plan for a safe ride home.

December 1-7 is National Safe Driving week, and this year focuses on driving under the influence of cannabis. According to MADD Canada, in 2022 nearly a third of Canadians reported using cannabis in the past 30 days, of which 12% of users drove while believing they were impaired.

Last December, Alberta RCMP officers removed 537 drivers from roadways as a result of being impaired.

Of those removed, 49 of them were under the influence of drugs or a combination of drugs and alcohol.

This December, as part of National Safe Driving Week, we’re reminding all Albertans to keep their head out of the clouds. If you have consumed drugs or alcohol, do not get behind the wheel. Find a sober ride home or a safe place to spend the night.

paramedics timing out due to fatigue and Hanna had 64 instances. The article states there was a total of 5,084 shutdowns in the past four years in the South Zone.

Another chart lists Unit Relocation Requests in the South Zone. From 2019-2024 Hanna had received 343 of these requests. The article goes on to say, “There are times when a transfer is necessary, a matter of life or death. But it’s the routine transfers, like those for follow-up appointments, that last five minutes, that grind the gears.”

The article says when you dive into the statistics, certain towns, including Hanna, are hit much harder than others. “Some of these rural communities don’t even have healthcare facilities big enough to justify the huge volume of transfers,” the post reports. “The real issue is AHS overloading these small communities’ limited EMS resources with transfers that don’t match their capacity.”

On a positive note, the blog observed some facilities in the South Zone have taken steps forward. In those areas, patients are assessed using a flowchart to determine if their situation requires an ambulance or if non-emergency options like alternate transport arrangements could suffice.

The blog noted when alternate transport isn’t found, the shortfalls often fall on the shoulders of departments in rural areas, which are staffed by volunteers. “When both ambulances and volunteers are unavailable, patients are left to languish for hours, waiting for a response that should have arrived in 15 minutes,” the blog observed.

Alberta lays track for passenger rail renaissance

A made-in-Alberta plan for sustainable passenger rail service could transform provincial travel, an MLA told the legislature as an online survey on the issue entered its final few weeks.

Ron Wiebe, the UCP member for Grande Prairie-Wapiti, emphasized that a passenger rail plan is not just about Edmonton, Calgary and the corridor that connects them. It will also help generate better travel options for smaller centres and rural Alberta, he said.

“This ambitious initiative is poised to reshape how Albertans move across our province, creating opportunities for economic growth (and) community connection, and more options for businesses and families,” Wiebe told the Nov. 25 sitting of the current session.

The government is peering decades into the future at city-to-city, regional, commuter and high-speed services. The Passenger Rail Master Plan will look at what should be developed where, how the service should be sequenced and governed, and what the funding models will be. Included will be a 15-year delivery plan to start building the system.

The master plan will be partly informed experts from Ontario, California, Itay, Spain, Japan and other places who took part in Alberta’s first passenger rail forum, Nov. 22 in Calgary. “By learning from their experiences, Alberta is building a foundation for success,” Wiebe said.

But the input of everyday Albertans is crucial in getting the plan right, which makes participation in the survey ending Dec. 20 especially import-

ant, Wiebe added. “It isn’t just about adopting global best practices. It’s also about addressing the unique needs of Albertans.”

Via Rail, a national crown corporation, runs about 370 departures a week in 400-plus Canadian communities, says its 2023 annual report. Although eight provinces are served, most routes are in Ontario.

Alberta’s relationship with passenger rail has been uneven at best since private cars assumed the transportation throne in the 1950s and ’60s. Studies and reports cite hurdles like low population density, lack of demand in a car-centric

culture, cost, and complexities like coordination, governance and regulation.

The province’s vision so far includes: • commuter rail systems in Calgary and Edmonton that connect to their surrounding communities, like Airdrie and Okotoks or Leduc and Spruce Grove • rail systems connecting Calgary and Edmonton’s downtowns to their international airports • a regional line between Calgary and Edmonton with a transit hub in Red Deer • lines connecting regional centres like Lethbridge, Medicine Hat,

Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray to Calgary and Edmonton • regional lines between Rocky Mountain parks and Calgary and Edmonton.

To take the survey, go to alberta.ca/ passenger-rail-engagement. It should take you 15-20 minutes, and you must complete it by Dec. 20. The province plans to follow up the survey early next year with regional open houses.

Walter Walker

February 10, 1935 - November 14, 2024 Walter Walker passed away peacefully in the Oyen Long Term Care on November 14, 2024 with his beloved wife Diane at his side.Walter was born on February 10, 1935 on the family farm south of Oyen to William and Mary Walker. He grew up on the family farm with 7 brothers and sisters.

Walter walked to Hills 2 school and then in 1950 was bussed to school in Oyen. He worked on the family farm and for other local farmers. He played alongside his Dad, 7 brothers and sisters and his family had a love and talent for music. He played with a band at local dances and many times there were jam sessions with Walter playing either the accordion, guitar or piano. If you could hum or sing a tune Walter could play it.

Walter and Diane married November 18, 1967.

Walters centennial project. Through the years Walter worked for local farmers and although he had other jobs mostly at garages, driving for Blue Flame Propane he always returned to farming. There are many memories of these special times. Cars and music were his passion and he would always require detailed descriptions if you were driving something new. Walter and Diane spent many eve-

nings playing cards, visiting with friends, camping, going to bingo, car shows and listening to old time music.

In later years Walter returned to his love of music and frequently played the piano for the residents in long term care. He loved to play the tunes he loved, and bring so much joy to others. When words fail music speaks.

Walter is pre-deceased by his parents William and Mary Walker. Brothers Erwin, James, Charlie, Roman, Elmer Gordon and sister Elva. Also brother-in-law Earl and sisters Jullian, Mavis and Colleen.

Walter is survived by his wife Diane brother Allan, sisters -in-law Marlene, Doris, Jackie and Betty.

As well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Winter sun safety: Protecting yourself year-round When winter arrives, many people living in Alberta may stop thinking about sun safety. However, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can still pose a health risk, even in the chilly months.

UVR comes from the sun but is invisible to humans. Two of the three forms of ultraviolet light, UVA and UVB rays, reach the earth and can harm you.

Around 65 to 90 per cent of all skin cancers are linked to UVR exposure.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. In Alberta, around one in 42 males and one in 46 females will develop melanoma within their lifetime.

From those who develop melanoma, around one in 276 males and one in 674 females will die.

Ultraviolet radiation reflects off the snow During winter, UVR can be as harmful as in the summer. The UV Index is a rating of how strong the sun’s rays are. The higher the UV rating, the more careful you have to be when outside in the sun.

When skiing, snowshoeing, walking or skating, you can be exposed to more UVR than you think. Bright white surfaces like snow can double your UVR exposure. Being at a higher altitude can also expose you to more UVR, putting you at higher risk of sun damage.

Protect yourself from the sun during the winter by following these tips: • Check the UV index (a rating of how strong the sun’s rays are) when planning to be outside in the sun. If the UV index is above 3, be careful.

Consider planning activities in the shade, away from the sun.

Stay sun safe!

While a sunny destination escape is exciting, you might be caught off guard by how strong the sun’s rays are in certain climates. Bringing sunscreen, long sleeve shirts and clothing with good UV protection, hats, sunglasses and other measures can help protect your skin and eyes from short- and long-term damage from the sun.

A “base tan” from either indoor tanning (also known as tanning beds) or outdoor tanning before a trip will NOT prevent a sunburn. In fact, it’s estimated that indoor tans only give you two to four percent protection from the sun.

Tanning equipment usually emits higher levels of UV radiation than the UV radiation outside. Use of tanning beds is not worth the health risks.

Did you know? The World Health Organization has placed UV tanning beds into its highest cancer risk category, ranking tanning beds equal to wellknown carcinogens like asbestos and tobacco.

• Wear winter clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Most winter clothing will provide good UV protection because of tight windproof construction with multiple layers.

• Some areas that are not always covered by winter clothes are your face, head and hands.

Choose a sunscreen that has a

broad-spectrum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen generously 20 minutes before going outside and reapply frequently.

• Wear sunglasses that fit closely and wrap around the face. Try to find sunglasses that reflect or filter out 99-100% of UVR light.

Nevi are benign melanocytic tumours, also known as moles. They are strongly associated with risk for melanoma. The greater the number of moles on a person’s skin, the greater the risk of melanoma. Someone who has more than 100 common moles or more than two atypical moles has a five- to twenty-fold increased risk of melanoma.
