Christmas Memory

Christmas time memories for myself include Christmas concerts, as well as my husband hiding the Elf on the Shelf for our girls when they were younger. Our oldest came home from school excited, and hoping to get an Elf on the Shelf. One day before Christmas, the Elf on the Shelf was hidden in her room. The amazed and magical look on her face was worth every penny! The Elf would do some great tricks, like leaving little chocolate ‘droppings’ everywhere, as well as toilet papering the entire living room while hanging from the ceiling. Our girls are older now, but the Elf on the Shelf makes

Yes, Katie. There is a Santa Claus

Christmases at the farm when I was a little girl were magical. I think they were extra special for me being the youngest of the Drummond clan. We had certain traditions, as most families do. Mom and Dad would get up early so Mom could put the gigantic turkey in the oven and start making Grandma Maclennan’s famous Christmas pudding sauce. Mom and Dad slept upstairs, and all of us kids were in the basement. I vaguely remember sharing the biggest bedroom with my sisters Valarie, Kristine and Carrie. Pam was the oldest, so she had her room, and Garth was the only boy and had his bedroom.

We weren’t allowed to come upstairs until we got the okay from Dad, who would send a cheery, “Ho, Ho Ho” over our Radio Shack intercom system. It isn’t like any of us were still sleeping. Christmas Eve night always seemed to be the longest night. The anticipation of what Santa may have left in our stockings was always too much for me to get a good night’s rest.

We would all clammer up the stairs and wish Mom and Dad a Merry Christmas before seeing what was in our sock.

I don’t remember when I figured out when there was no Santa Claus, but I do remember when I still believed. My favourite gift from Santa was a wind-up bathtub toy. It was a blue and white dolphin. Its little nose would spin round, allowing it to move in the water. I’m not entirely sure which of my siblings wound it up and stuck it in my hair, making a small bald spot.

We would gather around the tree, and one by one, from youngest to oldest, we would open up gifts. Dad would sit on the ottoman beside the tree and hand them out, while Mom would have her coffee and a notepad, making sure she knew who received what from whom. We always were expected to write thank you notes for gifts received from aunties, uncles and Grandma Drummond.

Babies are the best Christmas present

My best Christmas memory was Christmas 1977 when Greg and I were living in Calgary and came back to Sask. to spend Christmas with our families. I was pregnant, but not due for six weeks. I started to have a few pains on Dec. 22 so we went to the hospital in Calgary, and was reassured everything was good to go. We arrived at Greg’s mom and dad’s in Brock on Dec. 23. I didn’t feel that great but never thought about it because it was awesome to be back around family. Christmas Eve morning Greg’s mom (a mother of 10) said to me “You’re in labour. Go to the hospital.” We went to the Rosetown Hospital and Michelle Lee was born at 4 that afternoon. She weighed less than five pounds and had to stay in the hospital for a while. Best Christmas present ever. And I enjoyed turkey dinner in the hospital with two other moms who delivered on Christmas Eve.

“Charlie

Brown Trees”

Christmas traditions I remember as a child were attending Midnight mass on Christmas Eve where the life sized nativity scene made the birth of Jesus seem very real to me. In our home, Christmas greeting cards were strung up all around the kitchen. We lived on a farm and every Christmas without fail, by the time we made a trip into town to pick out a tree, only the scraggliest Charlie Brown trees were left. The only advantage was we didn’t even notice when the needles started falling off. This is me at age 5 beside our Charlie Brown tree. I think that was the year I ordered Allsorts licorice, the cheapest item in the Sears catalogue, for a gift for my dad cause I only had two bucks to spend. He had dentures and couldn’t eat them, so we helped him out.

We wish you all the best for Christmas and the new year.

Dashing through the snow

At the Story farm we host Christmas Eve every year with sleigh rides & a wiener roast. We invite all sides of our family and neighbours around us. Everyone comes and gathers around 2:00 pm and that’s when we begin loading the sleigh with Christmas Carollers to sing the classics like Jingle Bells. Our heated barn is a perfect place for everyone to warm up and have some Christmas cheer and get the hot dogs ready for roasting. It’s always a fun day with the Clydesdales running through the snow with the bells jingling and many voices singing along the way. The best part is sharing this all with our family and friends.

Nutcrackers for Christmas”

My mom, Sada Kilthau, hosted Christmas supper at her home, up until she went into the Western Senior Home at the age of 101 years. Family would share a potluck meal. We still gather as a huge family for supper, and make sure Mom gets out to see everyone. She is excited to attend our family functions, and has never declined the opportunity, or missed a supper. Messsage from Clearview Community Church

I’d like to take and introduce myself; I’m Pastor Grant over at Clearview Community Church, the blue church under the water tower on main street here in Kindersley. My wife and I moved here back in May of this year from Ontario. There has been a lot of change for us over this time and a lot of things to get used to. But I have enjoyed getting to know people in this community and one thing that Rosanna and I noticed from day one was people’s generosity. So, I would like to share a passage with you that doesn’t normally come up at Christmas time and hopefully it will encourage you to continue in your generosity this Christmas season.

plans? Those who have lost loved ones, or those who are struggling financially and can barely put a meal together let alone a fancy Christmas one with Turkey or Ham and all the fixings.

Maybe you can’t give anything this Christmas season, but you could probably add another chair to your table. So, a question I have for you to ponder this Christmas is who needs to be invited into your celebrations this Christmas season? God, through his Son Jesus invites all of us to come and join His table. He wants us to in turn extend that invitation to others.

At Christmas time I’m sure that many of you have traditions that involve multiple dinner plans over the holidays with family and friends. We get excited when we think and plan out what we are going to have and what games are going to be played and so on, and those are great things. But what about those in our community who don’t have any

This Christmas Eve we are having a service that will start at 7:00 pm but the doors will be open at 6:00 pm for refreshments. We want to extend the invitation beyond our family and friends but to everyone in our community. We want to bless those families in our community who are in need this Christmas season so we have decided that all proceeds from that service will be given to our local food bank here in town. Since moving here, I find that I have a greater understanding of what it feels like to be alone in community of people who are strangers to you, and I also know from my past what it’s like to barely scrape by financially. So, if you are alone this Christmas season or if you are struggling, I want to personally invite you to join us Christmas Eve and celebrate with us.

I hope to see you there,

Blessings, Pastor Grant Clearview Community Church.

Christmas=Family

Useful gifts for practical people

If you’re not sure what to buy your loved ones for Christmas, you may want to consider giving them something practical. Here are a few ideas to inspire you.

While the lights, the food, the tree and the gifts are all part of every Christmas season, what is central to all of our Christmas celebrations is our time with family, as we gather together, spend time with one another and make memories together.

• A gas station gift card

• A firewood sling

• Reusable containers, food wrap or sandwich bags

• A set of quality bedsheets

• A portable cell phone charger

• A bathtub tray

In more than one way, the first Christmas centered on family as well. Long ago in Bethlehem, Christmas began as a child was born under the most unusual of circumstances, and with his addition Mary and Joseph were now not just a couple but a family. Furthermore, we read in Galatians 4:4,5, “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.” God sent his Son to this world because he wanted us to become part of his family. The babe in the manger

grew to become a man, and as a man Jesus gave his life to pay for our sins. Having accomplished this for us, God invites us all to come to him in faith, not only so that our sins may be forgiven, but that we might be adopted into God’s family.

• Compact camping dishes such as a pot with a folding handle

• Warm socks

To find a host of gifts that will make your loved ones’ lives easier, visit your local retailers.

Thus, as we all look forward to welcoming family and friends into our homes this Christmas season, let us recognize that by his grace God invites us to become a part of his family, so that we may not only enjoy the blessings of such a relationship while on this earth but also may dwell in the house of the Lord forever when our time on earth comes to an end.

On behalf of all the members of Redemption Baptist Church, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Sincerely,

Reason for the Season

This Nativity has been in my family for 65 years! It was given to my parents as a Christmas gift from my Great Aunt and Uncle and was passed down to me from my Mom ten years ago. It is my most cherished Christmas decoration.

Acadia Valley Community Club hosts Christmas Gala

Just over a week until Christmas is here! I think I can safely say that I’m almost ready. Just a few more gifts to wrap. The W.P.S. Students have their Christmas concert tonight. We’ve had a bit of fog this week. Again, I put a reminder in my calendar to check for moisture in 90 days. I had it on my calendar that we had fog 90 days ago. No sign of moisture yet today.

Hope and Perspective During the Holidays

The story of Jesus’s birth reminds us of the hope, peace, and joy which can restore our faith amid even the most difficult of circumstances. This year, this message is even more important as many face challenges.

Organizing a gift exchange is a great way to kick off the holidays. However, it can be difficult to buy the perfect gift when you don’t know who will receive it. This is especially true if your group has folks of various ages. Here are a few things that will please most people.

Canada’s economic and inflationary situation has left a lot of folks struggling financially; the illegal invasion of Ukraine has brought war closer to home for the first time in many of our lifetimes; the famine in many places; political division about any number of subjects; and instability around the world have all been significant challenges this past year.

Yet in the midst of these challenges, the message of hope still rings true. We have persevered throughout our history as a nation because we stood together, driving a path forward toward a better tomorrow. Crises of different varieties, from war to political division to recession have come and gone, but Canada and its people have persevered. The story of Christmas and the legacy of faith in Canada’s story is significant and lays a strong foundation for our nation’s future.

5 types of gifts for new homeowners

As your Member of Parliament, I have seen firsthand the generosity and charitable nature of those in east-central Alberta. I rose in the House of Commons a few weeks ago to address the need for anyone who can to support local food banks or other charitable initiatives that aim to help the most vulnerable among us. This is more important as many folks are feeling the effects of our economic challenges, and in many cases are unable to be as generous as in years past. I would encourage anyone who can to donate even the smallest amount. For someone less fortunate, down the street or across the world, it can mean the difference between having a merry Christmas or going hungry. Regardless of where someone is at, whether they

enter the holidays with high prospects or they are facing challenges, it is the story of Jesus’ birth and resurrection that provides the hope needed in the midst of every circumstance. In the Gospel of John Chapter 14, verse 27 Jesus says: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Christmas is the perfect occasion to be reminded that there is hope.

And finally, I pass along my best Christmas wishes to those who face challenging circumstances around Christmas, like the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces who won’t be with their families due to deployment, as well as our front-line workers whose work doesn’t stop, and those who have faced loss and may be alone over the holidays.

From Danielle, my boys, and myself, and on behalf of the Parliament of Canada and all the people of Battle River—Crowfoot, I wish you and your loved ones a merry Christmas and blessings in the new year.

I don’t know about you but I have spent a good part of a lifetime critiquing how I show up in the world. I put my worth on what I have accomplished in life. I measured my success by what others said about me. I longed for words of approval and when I did get them I quickly looked for more. When I was critiqued by someone I was devastated. What I am learning is that none of that matters. I have been given an opportunity to see what truly matters and to see that the best way I can influence the world around me is to live the life that brings me joy. There is nothing I need to prove and nothing I need to do to earn approval.

Blaine and I both loved Christmas. We loved finding the perfect gifts for our family, our friends and each other. The interesting thing is I don’t remember all the gifts so much as what we did together and how it felt to share the moments. That we were a family and had an experience, whatever that might have been. Somehow after my loss I started to internalize the importance of being together AND I think there is even more to it than just being with one another. I think being truly present when you are together with your loved ones makes all the difference.

We can get a lot of joy from planning the perfect day and it can be comforting to have a good plan going into the holidays. Blaine was the greatest host when it came to family gatherings. He knew how to make people feel comfortable and he loved to help prepare the house and the food and set up for it. We loved to do this together.

You can prepare all you want for Christmas and you will never have the time to do everything you think you should do and even if you did, you can’t control how the day goes. I think some of us can get caught up in an expectation that we will all have some kind of magical experience. We also think that if it doesn’t go exactly as we expected it to, somehow we have failed.

There is only one thing that you can control in any situation. That is your reaction to it. You can be flexible and allow yourself to bend with the wind or you can let it break you. You can accept the things that you cannot control or you can be miserable about it. Am I saying you shouldn’t be upset? Not at all. I am saying that if you do get upset don’t be upset that you are upset! We have a choice to be kind to ourselves and give ourselves a really big break or we can choose to beat ourselves up some more. We need to have compassion for ourselves and others.

God is reaching out to you

Christmas can be a truly blessed time, and yet, for some, a very stressful time. We need to continually be reminded of the message the angels proclaimed to all mankind that first Christmas:

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:14). This was not an announcement of an end of hostilities among men. History has proven that can’t be what the angels were proclaiming. Instead, this was the proclamation that the war between God and man was over.

That’s not often been understood. Many people still think God is mad at them. That’s not so. He’s not mad, and He’s not even in a bad mood. Jesus, through His birth, death, burial and resurrection, satisfied God’s wrath completely.

Christmas is not about us reaching up, but about God reaching down to mankind. God is a good God. He only asks that we believe on His Son and receive Him into our hearts so that we can have true inner peace in a stressful world.

God’s Gospel of peace, proclaimed at Christ’s birth, is all about God’s unconditional love and mercy. It’s focusing on the good news of God’s love, and not the bad news of our failures or shortcomings. That’s the Gospel of peace that the angels were singing about - the inner peace that comes from the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ.

Glue a large black circle in the middle of a coloured piece of cardboard. Glue a white half-moon on top to hide the bottom of the circle. This will create snowy ground and night sky. Glue two bottle caps on top of each other in the middle of the landscape to form a snowman. Draw a face on the bottom of the top cap and buttons on the lower one. Then, make Christmas trees out of green and brown cardboard and glue them to each side of your snowman. Finally, if you want it to look like it’s snowing, sprinkle white confetti in the sky.

Now, all you have to do is display your work!

Better Together group makes meals-to-go

The Kindersley Better Together volunteers were having a blast in the kitchen all day long on Tuesday, December 13th, preparing delicious take-out Christmas dinners for those in need. They cooked up, and packed up 150 meals, which will be handed out during the week prior to Christmas.

THE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

There is, in my opinion, an overused and often misused phrase about the “true meaning of Christmas.” Every proverbial Tom, Dick, and Harry claim to possess, then proclaim, that truth. Every year I wonder who am I writing this reflection to, and who am I writing it as. Is it as a pastor of a United Church congregation writing to his flock, or as a clergyman with his presence in the life of a wider community by virtue of some volunteer work, jokes and encounters on the streets, and many funerals and weddings for the proverbial “unchurched”? I ask myself by whose and what authority do I speak and write to you on a such important matters as faith, life, death, and life after death? While we wrestle with these questions, I will share with you my take on the meaning of Christmas, I will share with you, my truth. Do with that what you will.

According to Polish tradition we do not put away the Christmas tree till the Epiphany at the earliest, and Baptism of Jesus at the latest. Because that denotes the Christmas season. Bluntly put, the Christmas tree reminds us of what has happened, not of what is to come. That is what Advent is for, with Advent wreath, candles etc. Within the Christian, liturgical, calendar there is an embedded ongoing story, and an invitation to reflect on, and learn from, that story. Events such as Christmas, or Easter, or Epiphany, or Trinity Sunday are milestones on our journey of faith, the story of our salvation. Yep, chances are you are looking up the last two events on your internet search engine. My point is, let us not make Christmas be all-and endall event that, frankly, began two hours after the echo of the Remembrance Day service bugle faded into silence. Jesus in the crib, just like Jesus nailed to the cross (yes, one and the same) are but moments in history. Question is how they shape our story, how they affect us, and how do we respond. In my opinion, it is not enough to put up Christmas tree and sing “Joy to the World.” It is not enough to claim being saved because He died on the cross. What matters is how we live our lives in-between and outside of these (and other) events. What matters is how our lives mirror the life that began in the manger and ended at the cross. Because that is how we make clear what Christmas, or Easter, mean to us.

I am not ashamed to admit that sometimes words fail me, or that someone simply said it better. So here are the ultimate words, in my opinion, on the meaning of Christmas.

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and the princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flocks, The work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among people, To make music in the heart.

Let the work of Christmas begin! Let’s begin it together! - Howard Thurman (1899-1981)

Yet before we begin …. may the innocence of the newborn child be your lot, may Jesus’s passion for the poor and downcast be your lot, may His passion and conviction about the Kingdom of God be your lot, and may the journey that begins at Christmas become your adventure.

Unless, of course, you are not a Christian, and this is strictly secular festival for you to spend with your family while hoping for a better world. Then a very Happy Christmas to you as well and save me your roasted turkey carcass if you are not using it.

I pray God’s blessi.ngs and love on you all.

Your brother Piotr

CHRISTMAS Memories

Precious Christmas Gift

One of our favourite family Christmas memories is when we had our baby while visiting Grandma and Grandpa for Christmas.

We knew the baby due date was getting closer so we did pack a car seat and diaper bag just in case. We attended the Christmas Eve service. The town’s expert baby delivery doctor who was also attending the service took one look at the protruding baby belly and made a point of finding Grandpa to tell him that if we needed to deliver he would be available.

Christmas Day passed uneventful and Boxing Day dawned and so did the imminent arrival of our baby. Though we had made plans to leave for home that day our baby thought else wise. The baby’s arrival was greeted also by an auntie who was able to slip in on the delivery. And a rather overwhelmed Grandma and Grandpa just had to walk to the hospital to see the newest grandchild rather than a many hours drive. We were discharged to Grandma and Grandpa’s house, placing the baby and car seat under the Christmas tree as she was our best present gift. She spent her night sleeping in a dresser drawer emptied just for this precious Christmas gift.

where we spent time with my cousins, ate delicious food and made memories. There was never one thing I enjoyed more than another; I enjoyed it all! In the photo I am pictured with my older brother and my mom.

Birthday party for Christmas

Christmas Eve in our childhood home we would celebrate Jesus birthday with a party. Since I can remember we have had pizza, birthday cake and everyone would take turns blowing out the candles; we would play games and even had balloons. Some years we would make homemade pizzas; other years we would order in, but the deal was we could only pay in change. So everyone would run around gathering up all the change in the house to pay for pizza.

Today we have also started having hors d’oeuvres, dancing, crafts for kids and more. This is something that all 8 our homes (7 of us siblings and mom’s house) still continue to this day in our own way. Because really, Jesus is the reason for the season, so throw a birthday party!

Swedish Christmas tradition

We had the Swedish tradition of 7:00 am Christmas morning church service. Mom getting us up and Dad driving us. It was so beautiful with candles in the windows and an advent wreath of candles with the Christ candle lit in the middle. There was amazing worship and music, and the sun was just peaking out as the bell was ringing as we were leaving.

“Touched By a Child, Touched by a King”

The Kindersley Community Choir held their Christmas cantata, “Touched By a Child, Touched by a King,” on Sunday afternoon, December 11th, at the United Church. The cantata has been a tradition in Kindersley beginning in 1980. Clayton Braybrooke has been leading the cantata for the past 22 years, starting in 2000.

“We produce two programmes a year, at Christmas and Easter, with some secular tunes for added flavour and fun,” Clayton said. The choir practices every Wednesday night, with extra practices taking place closer to “crunch time,” Clayton noted.

He chose “Touched By a Child, Touched by a King” as this year’s cantata because he likes John Purifoy’s writing style. “The title song is a lovely, rich lullaby-like melody with a simple but powerful message,” he explained. He added that the up-tempo rhythm of “Run Shepherds” gives an adrenaline rush of breathless excitement.

“TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE JESSIE’S CHRISTMAS

Useful gifts for practical people

I was sure that we’d lost it, so deep in the snow, But that snowdrift was perfect for Jessie, you know! She was dressed all in fur, from her head to her foot, And her paws were all covered with snowflakes and dirt. A slobbery ball she’d returned in her mouth; She’d worked hard to find it, she’d “drop it” herself!

Her eyes—how they sparkled! Her face was so merry! Her curls were wet spirals. Her snoot? A brown berry! That muppet-like face pointed skyward just so, That the beard on her chin would glisten with snow. Her favorite new ball she kept tight in her jaws, And she circled around me on mischiefy paws!

She had a red tail and a furry round face, That bounced when she played, with not too much grace! She did not waste time, but played fetch oh-so-hard, That she zoomied and zoomied and tore up the yard! Till finally worn out and covered in snow, She nuzzled beside me…there’s snow place like home. With one last ball bounce, then we shared a high paw, “This dog’s got my heartstrings.” I said with an “awwww. ”
