Gardening project offers an Oasis for recovery

By Tim Blundell Jones Oasis Gardening Did you know there are microbacteria in soil that increase serotonin in the brain, so they work like an antidepressant? People have known for years that gardening is good for you and science now tells us why. For over 3 years Recovery Enterprises has provided an Oasis for people to recover from mental health issues by establishing Oasis
Gardening. You may have spotted our vegetable garden or our polytunnels, or maybe, if you’ve ever visited Sheffield Health and Social Care headquarters at Fulwood House on a Tuesday, you’ve bought some fresh vegetables from our stall. Oasis occupies two previously unused areas at Fulwood House. Although we grow other edible plants like rhubarb and blackcurrants, we use the space primarily to grow vegetables and also flowers to sell. Whatever we
grow, it’s all with the aim of enjoying ourselves and enjoying the creativity around making plants flourish. We believe that anyone can have a go at gardening and reap the benefits of being outside with plants. Our vegetable garden and polytunnels provide a great space for volunteers to try their hand at gardening. Oasis is developing well and has already helped a number of people on their recovery journey.
