Sea change for Marbella Marbella: marea de cambio .................................................................................................................................................................................

Hailed by mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, as “an emblematic work that will lay the foundations for a new city model and act as an engine of economic development for the entire coast”, the recent announcement that a staggering €400 million is about to be spent on the expansion of Marbella’s La Bajadilla Port, has to be the biggest shot in the arm in the resort’s 60-year history. The ambitious project, however, goes a whole lot further than merely creating a second Puerto Banús, because reminiscent of the iconic yacht harbours of the UAE, the plan is to build “the most important marina anywhere on the Mediterranean Coast”. Led by Qatari Sheikh Abdullah ben Nasser Al-Thani – the owner and president of Málaga Football Club since 2010 – the consortium behind the Port Al Thani scheme also includes Marbella Town Hall, which has a 3% stake in the project. El puerto de La Bajadilla se va a convertir en el proyecto más imponente de Marbella, gracias a la inversión de 400 millones de euros en su completa remodelación. La alcaldesa, Ángeles Muñoz, la ha definido como “una obra emblemática que sentará las bases de un nuevo modelo de ciudad y actuará como motor de desarrollo económico en toda la costa”. Con todo, esta ambiciosa iniciativa es mucho más que la creación de un segundo Puerto Banús, como ocurre con el modelo de marina de los Emiratos Árabes. Y de hecho se va a construir “el puerto deportivo más importante de todo el Mediterráneo”. El plan está auspiciado por el catarí Sheikh Abdullah Ben Nasser Al-Thani, propietario y presidente del Málaga C.F. desde 2010 y el consorcio responsable está participado en un 3% por el Ayuntamiento de Marbella. ¡Pero qué idea más salada!
