For the birds

At a time when many people are tying holiday gifts, visitors to the Sarasota Audubon Society were making something for their feathered friends. During the Kids’ Art Day on Dec. 14, the attendees, including about 20 kids, left with nesting mobiles to hang in their yards. The mobiles strung together materials like hurricane debris from the gardens at The Celery Fields, native plants and Spanish moss, across a framework of large twigs and held together with cotton muslin. “We definitely want to do it again...” said Audubon Society President Sara Reisinger. “The feedback was really, really good, and it was so educational.” She said people can also create their own nesting mobiles using natural materials such as lawn clippings.

First fundraiser

As Principal Fayth Jenkins stepped out to speak at the inaugural Suncoast School for Innovative Studies Annual Luncheon, she said she didn’t think she’d ever seen so many people gathered to hear her discuss the school. Celebrating the school’s 25 years, the event, held Dec. 14 at Michael’s On East, was its first fundraiser. It also celebrated its candidacy for the International Baccalaureate organization’s Primary Years Program for the 2024-2025 school year. “The 25th anniversary is huge, because we’ve been on a long journey of really trying to make sure we clean up our mission and our vision and make the biggest impact we can on the community,” said Jenkins. $1.00
