Carly Danzig, Nicole Silverstein and Melanie Fischer

Offering a helping hand from home Carly Danzig said she and others in Sarasota’s Jewish community felt helpless, watching from this side of the world as the Israel-Hamas war continued. However, she found a way to come together with friends to take positive action. She and Nicole Silverstein and Melanie Fischer, who are all members of Temple Sinai, decided to organize a fundraiser at Silverstein’s home. Focused on jewelry-making, the event featured beads and supplies, along with light bites and refreshments. “It was really a way for members of our local community and our friends and family to gather and unite with one another through the past couple of weeks that have been pretty dark,” she said. The friends were able to raise about $17,000, collected via ticket and jewelry sales at the event. The funds will be donated to American Friends of Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical and disaster service. “We were really touched by all the support, and we raised much more than we set out to,” Danzig said.

Andre Herke, Thomas Herke, 1, and Jennifer Herke decided to make use of a lobster costume they owned, a hand-me-down item within their family. “I thought it was the cutest thing,” said Jennifer Herke. “I had no idea it was going to be such a hit.”

What’s your favorite landmark? Lido Shores has long been known as a hotbed for midcentury modern homes and the Sarasota School of Architecture, but now, Architecture Sarasota wants to know: What are other significant buildings in the area worthy of recognition and appreciation? Through Jan. 31, it’s asking the public to nominate “Moderns That Matter.” It can be any place, including buildings, structures, neighborhoods and districts, signs, public art, parks and public places or other design features built within the past 100 years. According to Architecture Sarasota, with so much change going on these days, it wants to make sure it identifies and can help preserve, adapt or build things that will resonate for generations to come. To nominate your favorite modern place, visit ArchitectureSarasota.org.
