Helping hand in the rain Don’t let it be said Siesta Key doesn’t treat its new neighbors well. North Carolina-turned-Siesta Key resident Peri Gruber was walking home recently with groceries when one of Florida’s trademark summer storms struck. She checked in for a quick bite at the Village Cafe and, when realizing the rain wasn’t going to stop anytime soon, she prepared to head out into downpour for the 10 minute walk home with her bags. She needn’t have worried, though. The cafe’s staff stopped and offered to drive Gruber home. “This is true, local Sarasota heart and soul, and I was incredibly grateful,” Gruber said.

At the entrance to the headquarters of the Sarasota Police Department on Adams Lane, a twisted steel beam perched upon two posts serves as a lasting reminder of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. A piece of the collapsed World Trade Center, the upward-pointing artifact epitomizes the indelible American spirit. The sculpture memorializes the victims who died that day, a number that included New York City firefighters, Port Authority police officers and New York City police officers. The memorial was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2011.

Antiquated plumbing for the 27-year-old splash pad at Bayfront Park can no longer be repaired. Replacement of the infrastructure is a significant portion of the $3.2 million project.
Bayfront attraction moves ahead with revised features, but cost cuts still take a bite out of original specs. SEE PAGE 9A
