The property to be auctioned, according to public-facing real estate listings, is on the market at $7.9 million. It sold in June of 2021 for $6.5 million.Tobe eligible to participate as a bidder, the registration process requires bringing a cashier’s check for $100,000 on the day of the auction.

Piccolo denied the airport’s prior interest in the site was the reason for its objection to the apartments.
“I sympathize with the kennel club ownership,” Piccolo said. “They were put out of business by a constitu tional amendment, but that doesn’t justify going to residential use versus commercialPreviouslyuse.”zoned for heavy com mercial, the majority of dwellings in Aventon’s site plan would lie beneath the 65 decibel day-night average sound level contour. That’s fine for a Home Depot, Piccolo said. Not so

During the City Commission hear ing, Commissioner Hagen Brody read aloud from the affidavit after saying he had suspicions regarding the airport’s “very tense opposition” to the “Onproject.June14, 2022, I went to lunch at Libby’s with Airport Authority President and CEO Frederick J. Pic colo,” the affidavit reads. “At that lunch, Mr. Piccolo expressed to me the Airport Authority was inter ested in acquiring the property from the Trust. After June 14, 2022, Mr. Piccolo again expressed to me that the Airport Authority would like to acquire the property from the Trust, and in the event the application for development approvals are denied, he hoped he ‘would be the first call I would make.’ ”
Although the airport author ity had shown interest in the kennel club property in 2019, the finan cial uncertainties brought about by COVID-19 — which for months cur tailed commercial aviation — forced SRQ to tighten the reins on capital spending. Otherwise, it may have been an ideal location for rental car operations, satellite parking, or a combination of the two.
The initial legal challenge, Bailey told the SRQ board, would be against the approval of the comprehensive plan amendment before the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings.
ANDREW WARFIELD STAFF WRITER
With the airport board’s litigation approval in hand, he and Lincoln testified before the Commission last week and hinted at a legal challenge should the project be approved.
Although a 372-unit apartment community at the former Sarasota Kennel Club was approved by the Sarasota City Commission last week, it appears likely a court will deter mine if the project moves forward.
Between the interlocal agreement, the comprehensive plan — which commissioners voted to amend to allow residential on the site as part of the Aventon approval process — and a 3-2 recommendation for rejec tion by the Sarasota Planning Board, Piccolo told the airport board he was surprised by the City Commission’s 4-1 approval on the first reading of the rezoning and site plan.
In the interim, in June 2021, Aven ton filed a preliminary application with the city for a comprehensive plan amendment to facilitate the project and put the property under contract pending eventual approval.
At its monthly meeting the week before, the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority Board of Commission ers authorized Piccolo and airport attorney Dan Bailey to pursue legal action should Aventon Sarasota be approved.Theairport would not be suing the city with tax money. Not supported by city or county taxes, its revenues come from aviation operations such as landing and gate fees, as well as hangar leases, parking and rental car fees, concessions, and retail and res taurant leases, among others.
A CLEAR CONSCIENCE
“This is a very cheap shot … If I knew that we were going to grow like we did when we were approached about it, I would have spent the reserves because we would have made a lot more money. And I told him if this thing doesn’t work out, it’s not personal. Make me your first phone call because we’re in a differ ent financial position. Not because I want the property, but because I don’t want to go through this again because I can’t depend on the city to live up to the agreement that we made four years ago.”
Piccolo added he had never pre viously spoken with Collins. He did confirm inviting Collins to contact him if the apartments were denied but characterized it as more of a casual“Thisremark.islow. This is not evidence of anything and should be struck,” Lincoln said of the affidavit, which was entered into the public hearing record.“Itis not only specious, but in a situation where Mr. Collins isn’t here to be questioned to his face about this, is cowardly. Mr. Collins is implying that the airport is doing this for some underhanded purpose.”
Piccolo told commissioners that during the lunch, he laid out the air port’s case to Collins and explained that it had invested $30,000 to eval uate the property in 2019, just prior to the pandemic.
RANCORTAKESOFF
“It’s a high standard we would have to meet,” Bailey said. “If the hearing officer determines that the plan amendment was clearly debat able, then the city wins on that issue. Then on the other two approvals, they would be challenged probably in circuit court.”

ABOUT THAT AFFIDAVIT
Aircraft taking off or landing at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport fly nearly over the former dog track property.
Lincoln told commissioners the lunch was arranged through a mutu al friend.
When taking off to the southeast, airliners typically climb along a route near the former Sarasota Kennel Club.

“Forty-nine percent of all aircraft accidents happen on initial depar ture or final descent,” he told the SRQ board. “And so you’re going to put, 1,500 feet off the end of the run way, 372 housing units. We think that we need to take this as far as we can. We might not win, but if anything goes wrong, while I will feel awful, I will sleep at night knowing that I made every effort, and you’ll be able to sleep at night knowing you made every effort, to bring this to a differ ent conclusion.”
“At the time COVID hit and we were down to less than 10,000 pas sengers per month,” he said. “We only had $15 million in reserves. This would have cost us two-thirds of our reserves. We couldn’t do it.”
Most of the residential properties in similar proximity to the airport were built in the 1970s and 1980s, prior to contemporary science and regulatory language regarding noise. The airport spent some $45 million on noise abatement programs in the 1980s and 1990s to add sound damp ening to homes, to purchase homes and to buy aviation easements over an RV park at $2,500 per lot.
much for residents exposed to the noise for long periods of time.
Brody attempted to defuse the emotionally charged situation at that point, but Piccolo pressed on.
The airport board’s vote was unan imous with member Doug Holder abstaining, citing prior legislative representation work for the Collins family, which owns the property via the Jack G. Collins Sr. Revocable Trust.Since the dog track closed, Aven ton, which has experience develop ing sites close — but not this close — to airports emerged as the only potential developer of the property, although there was some flirtation from previous suitors. While sympa thetic to the plight of Jack Collins Jr. and the Collins family, Piccolo told the SRQ board that residential was the worst possible use for the land given its proximity, about 1,500 feet, from the end of the runway.
airport’s objection to the project. If the Aventon project is denied, the affidavit reads, Piccolo told Collins he should be the first person he calls. Instead, Piccolo said his objection was based on health, safety and the inevitable noise complaints the air port will receive regardless of how well informed new residents are or liability waivers they sign, as pledged by“WeAventon.allknow, and we’ve dealt with it for years; no matter how much you notify people you’re going to get noise and you’re going to get people wanting action and wanting you to fix the noise that you can’t fix,” Pic colo told the airport board.
A win there would invalidate the rezoning and site-plan approval.
SRQ President Rick Piccolo disputes the subtext of a comment to Jack Collins Jr. about the airport’s fight against a SarasotacommunitymultifamilyattheformerKennelClub.
By the requisite supermajority vote, commissioners approved three measures at their Sept. 6 meet ing to clear the way for Aventon Sarasota, which is being planned by Raleigh, North Carolina-based Aventon Companies for the 25-acre site across University Parkway from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.Theapproval followed arguments by the SRQ President and CEO Rick Piccolo and Sarasota attorney Robert Lincoln, who specializes in challeng ing rezoning and site-plan approv als. Citing the approval as contrary to the city’s comprehensive plan and a 2018 agreement between the city and the airport, which in part discourag es residential development beneath the airport’s noise contour, the two hinted at a possible legal challenge.
He also cited safety as an issue.
Prior to last week’s City Commis sion meeting, commissioners were presented with an affidavit from Jack Collins Jr., which describes a lunch meeting with Piccolo — which Pic colo said Collins requested through a mutual friend — to discuss the

The dominant agenda item at last week’s DID board meeting was a post-mortem of Chair Eileen Hamp shire’s Aug. 15 appearance before the Commission, during which she said City Manager Marlon Brown, in an unannounced transfer, moved to city coffers $400,000 for the future Main Street complete street project.

“That $400,000 hasn’t gone out the door,” Strickland said, “and right now you’re sitting at $865,000.”

With a joint meeting still pending with the Sarasota City Commission to discuss a transfer of $400,000 from its budget, the city’s Down town Improvement District Board of Directors learned this past week that its bank account balance was not as grim as it originally seemed.
Still, the unannounced funds transfer doesn’t sit well with the DID board, compounded by a removal of $150,000 earlier this year to help fund the Bay Runner, a free trolley service that runs between downtown and St. Armands and Lido keys.
ANDREW WARFIELD STAFF WRITER

In reality, the $400,000 remains available for use by the DID for approved items, it’s just not in the district’s own account. Hampshire complained to commissioners that the account balance was down to $8,000 after the transfer, but in the weeks since learned that the DID actually has more money. Kel ly Strickland, the city’s director of financial administration, explained that nonallocated monies roll into reserves and don’t reside in the DID’s available funds account unless bud geted. The DID, she said, ended fiscal year 2019 with $790,000, and 2020 and 2021 with just more than $1 mil lion, including the $400,000.

The DID had approved the expen diture but didn’t expect the money to be removed until it was needed. Brown explained to commissioners the $400,000 demonstrates that the city has “skin in the game” as it applies for state and federal funding.
When the DID objected to that, the city sent the money back to the DID, which then agreed to help fund the trolley with $50,000 a year for three years. Julie Ryan, the DID’s business district manager, told board mem bers the city is setting aside nearly $3 million, including the DID’s $400,000, from a variety of sources for the Main Street complete street project, which has yet to begin plan ning.

Dispute: Police were called to a grocery store by the manager who was concerned about 10 to 15 people who appeared to be between the ages of 16 and 22 filming outside the store near an ATM, then moved into the store and continued to film. The manager had asked them multiple times to leave the premises, but they refused. After speaking with the manager, an officer was approached by two individuals who claimed to be part of the group, saying they were only filming themselves shopping. The group was advised by the officer that if they did not leave the premises at the request of the manager, they were subject to arrest for trespassing. The individuals were argumentative with law enforcement but paid for the merchandise and left the premises without incident.

Criminal Mischief: After the facilities manager of a building received messages from employees advising that one of its front windows had been broken, police were called to investigate what was described as “smashed in” glass with a large hole in the middle. The manager said an employee told her the window was intact between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sept. 4. and that a landscaping crew noticed the damage at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 5. The complainant advised she wanted to pursue charges against the perpetrator if one can be identified by security camera footage. The cost to replace the window is approximately $1,000.

If you take the time to read and analyze Biden’s speech and then place his accusations side by side with what has transpired during his administration, it is unavoidable to see that Biden, his White House maestros, Cabinet toadies and the Democratic Congress have done everything he accuses the Republicans of doing.

Rand pointed out that Socialism and Fascism are merely variants of Statism, and the difference between Socialism and Fascism involves property rights. “Socialism negates property rights altogether, vesting the ownership and control of all property to the state. Fascism leaves ownership in the hands of individuals, but transfers control to the government.”“Inpractice,” Rand said, “there is no difference between the two; both come from the same collectiviststatist principle; both negate individual rights and subordinate the individual to the collective; both deliver the livelihood and the lives of the citizens into the power of an omnipotent government.”
Let’s start with this: It is unconscionable for our president, Joe Biden, to call half of American voters “fascists.” It is likewise unconscionable for President Donald Trump to call people derogatory names. And it is unconscionable even for presidential candidates (e.g. Hillary Clinton) to call Trump supporters “Deplorables.”

When the Biden regime imposes regulations to thwart commerce that it doesn’t want (e.g. shutting down energy pipelines and drilling), it is using its centralized autocratic powers.Dictatorial leader? Biden is not, but he is the doddering stooge and mouthpiece for the behind-thescenes cabal of Ron Klain, Susan Rice and the other leftist Democratic Party schemers foisting their fascist agenda on Americans.

We the People must continue to be “mad as hell” and continue to express it at the ballot box.
And then there is “forcible suppression of opposition.” The list is long and notorious: Raid on Mar-alago. Rampant big-tech censorship. FBI and White House staffs colluding with big-tech to suppress the Hunter Biden and Biden corruption stories. Don’t forget the dozens and dozens of physicians and scientists whom CDC officials and social media platforms discredited because they challenged Washington authorities’ handling of COVID. Key Chorale is coming back from its summer recess with a tribute to the old country that will bring an Irish flair to Church of the Palms.

“They call me The Big Yank,” he says of his following in Ireland. “I’m 6-foot-7, so it’s hard to blend in over there. I’ve gotten out there and I’ve played a lot and people know my name. They know what I look like, but I’ve got a beard now. I’m no lon ger 12, you know?”
“It’s very natural to us. We all have the same repertoire,” he says. “Once we get down there and have our first rehearsal, it’s going to be really cool to see how it all pieces together.”
Foley, based just outside Nashville, Tennessee, is thrilled to be working with this assemblage of musicians. He’s been in Nashville for about a

For Caulkins, the hard work comes in blending all those talents.
“This whole season really is about just bringing our whole audience back and letting them enjoy live music again. That audience is com ing back but they’re not coming back like a light switch. They come back as they feel ready.”
And while he might not have real ized it at the time, taking on this music means taking on a new lan guage.Caulkins says that’s not necessar ily difficult or out of the ordinary for

Caulkins calls that kind of prepa ration a “grand experiment,” and he says the final days of rehearsal will be invigorating.“Whenyou’re rehearsing this online, you don’t get the sound of all the voices coming together,” he says. “It’s always an exciting time. They haven’t played all together that often, says Foley, but when they do, it’s instant chemistry.
Foley says he’s never played with a choral group this size before. So the mix of sounds should be new for everyone; not just the audience, but also the musicians themselves.

Josh Scheible and Caegan Qui mby, singers and songwriters for Physical Plant, went into a brief musical exile during the pandemic that allowed them to sharpen their material. They’ve emerged with a veteran rhythm section with ties to several other local Sarasota bands, and they’re celebrating the August release of their second album, “Hot Future,” which is a reference to cli
Physical Plant emerged from the pandemic with a new album, two new members and a resolve to keep writing new songs.
“We’re older now,” says Quimby, who started Physical Plant as part of an independent study project at New College. “We’re the age of the bands — maybe older —that were asking us to play shows back then.
The pair began working on music together and immediately recog nized that they had an excellent partnership, and they credit one of their professors, Steve Miles, not just for recognizing and encouraging their talent but also for giving them

hey’ve gone from the New College kids to the wizened old heads on the Sarasota rock scene. And they’ve done it in the space of two albums.
Scheible, a graduate of Braden ton’s Southeast High School, has been playing in Manatee County bars since before he was allowed to drink. The guitarist estimates he played more than 100 shows as part of Magic Tree Conspiracy, a classic rock cover band, by the time he got to New College. Then he met Quimby as a freshman and became friends.

Physical Plant wants to revive the Sarasota rock scene.
“Things can happen here. But we have to make them happen.”

HOT BAND, HOT FUTURE

The band’s new drummer, Michael Murphy, formerly played in Equines and Cats in the Basement, and young Scheible and Quimby first met him as a promoter who got them their first gigs. Dave Cornicelli, their new bassist, formerly played in Hail Dale and the Umbrella Cult, and he brings versatility because he can also play drums. But more than their musical chops, Murphy and Cornicelli bring a new attitude to the band.

But when they look at the local scene, they realize that it’s a chal lenging environment for them and for other bands like them.

Their first album, “What’s Laid Down,” came out in 2018, and four years later it’s a completely different band with a different mindset.
They have enough material for a third album; and maybe a fourth, if you count the songs Quimby hasn’t brought to the band yet.
Best of all, they’re not in a rush. They’re committed to seeing this thing out over the long haul.
“We have to cater to the demograph ic that’s going to come out and keep the place in business.

“We always just tried to have faith, just kind of write more songs.”
Scheible and Quimby spent the pandemic rehearsing as a two-piece outfit with a drum machine, and their partnership was only strength ened by their mutual commitment.

“I’m going to keep doing it wheth er I’m getting paid or not,” Quimby says. “So we never doubted that we’re going to keep doing some thing. But each time the lineup dis solves, it’s very anxiety inducing.
“When we disagree, it’s usually pretty relevant. There’s a reason we disagree,” says Scheible. “About 95% of the time, we like the same stuff. But the sticking points, it’s usually something interesting to tease out.”
sit down together and trade licks and lyrics? No, not really.
“Caegan and I, we’re both clas sic perfectionists and overthink ers,” says Scheible. “It’s nice to have somebody in the room who is the ‘Just do it,’ attitude. It’s nice to hear that because between the two of us, (we) will just talk, talk, talk.”

There were a lot of good bands in the area back then, and a lot of them gave young Physical Plant an oppor tunity to open up for them.
The pair meets once a week, on Wednesdays, to tighten up musi cally and prepare for their Sunday full-band rehearsals, which usually see them striving to stay tight on their current material.
Scheible, who moonlights as a guitar teacher, says he saw one of his classmates from first grade at a

“We got to play with people from the orchestra. We got to write for people from the orchestra. We got all these very interesting perfor mance opportunities that happened through New Music New College.”
“When we’re the closest to an argument,” adds Quimby, “It’s because we’re both wrong.”

But it wasn’t just their schooling; Scheible and Quimby also say that the indie rock scene in Sarasota from about 2010 to 2015 was incredibly productive and nurturing.
They’re scouring the local scene and looking for places to play. Phys ical Plant is going to be playing a show at the Ringling Underground in November, and they say it would be nice to return to their roots at New College and play there again.
At this point, they’re thrilled to be playing music again.

But Quimby is a prolific songwriter with a backlog of material just wait ing to get the full-band treatment.
Most bars, says Scheibel, don’t want to book a band that plays origi nal“We’remusic.going to book a cover band that keeps people here all night,” he says of the bar owner’s perspective.
They make sure to point out that their old bassist, Dave Baker, has not left the band. He’s just entering a new phase of life as a father, and they’re forging ahead with their old music and with their new stuff.

The next step — the Hot Future, if you will — sees Physical Plant not just making its own music but also setting into the parallel path of finding gigs for themselves and other bands around them.
“That’s just business. As someone who came out of what I like to call the Margaritaville circuit, I get it. That’s what I came up doing.”
The important part of their part nership, though, is that Scheible and Quimby share the same tastes.
“They say you get all your life to write your first album and a couple years to write your second one. But that’s not really a problem for us,” says Scheible. “We always have 10 new tunes. We’ll get to them when we get to them.”
How do they write songs? Do they

It would cost $85 to see this fight at home. Or you could see it on a big screen for $14 instead. Middleweight champions Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have faced each other twice before, with their first encounter being judged a draw in 2017 and the second a majority decision in Alvarez’s favor the following year. Now they face off again with another championship on the line. Will past be prologue? Or will Golovkin get revenge?

There aren’t many left in the state — estimated at around 7,000 to 9,000 — and several state parks serve as protected grounds for the birds’ numbers to grow.
To be clear though, don’t feed them by hand. It’s illegal.

It’s a big spot with much to get into, so we’ve highlighted a few things in particular.
The green trail also is home to a few scrub jays, but hikers have been known to spot an American bald eagle or two nesting along the way.You can also bring your pet along with you on your walks, but make sure it’s leashed. Also, they can’t go swimming in the lake. But then the dog will smell better if it’s not wet, so it works out for you on the ride home.
The Friends of Oscar Scherer State Park nonprofit helps with that, working hard to preserve the population for future generations.
There’s plenty of places to walk in Oscar Scherer, and the main trails are split into various segments, each with its own color.
The yellow trail is around five miles and is primarily a sandy walk, perfect for a secluded trek if you want to clear your head.
There’s a nice lake to kick back at if the heat is getting to you.Florida’s native Beautyberries – distinctive with the bright purple berries – make a divine homemade jelly with a rich, flavorful taste. Enjoy the shade where you can. Foliage ranges from thick to sparse, so sun protection is a key concern while hiking. “I have bought and sold over 7 houses in my 71 years and have worked with several realtors. NEVER, and I repeat, NEVER, has any realtor been so helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable throughout the home buying and selling process. Anne and her team are gems. FLORIDA SCRUB JAYS
Interested locals are able to sponsor local birds (some of whom have needy families) and help take care of the local habitat.
The park has more than 10 miles of its own cycling trails, and there’s even a relaxing lake area if you need to stop and enjoy the moment.Asareminder, Florida law requires helmets for anyone 16 and younger.

intersects with the area. There are access points along the trail.
Oscar Scherer State Park is one such bastion of the species, and the bird can be spotted while out and about on the trails. You can spot them by their blue and grey color scheme and their traditional oak shrub habitats
BIKING AND THE LEGACY TRAIL
The 1.5-mile blue trail has a better chance of spotting the little scrub jay (which we’ll get to) as well as a few gopher tortoises.

It’s all about location, and Oscar Scherer has a uniquely good spot in that much of the Legacy Trail

here’s a lot at Oscar Scherer State Park. More than 15 miles of hiking trails, 10 miles of cycling space, animals to spot, places to kayak, camp and even snorkel.Butmore than anything, there’s quiet. There are spots of deep foliage, but Oscar Scherer also benefits from how sparse it is. Towering but lonely trees fill the distance while you’re surrounded by sand and brush. When there’s no one around and there’s no sound beyond the trudging of your feet, it’s a relaxing feeling you don’t get in the developed areas around the park.

RYAN KOHN SPORTS EDITOR
“Krazy Kai” Haines, 6, lands jump after jump on his scooter while pursuing a sport in which older kids typically excel.

“Kids will surprise you every single day of your life — if you let them. Just don’t get in the way. Don’t underes timate them. A lot of people are, in my opinion, overprotective of their kids these days. Let them learn. If they fall, they will get back up.”
But by the time Matthew finished his query, “Krazy Kai” was back on his scooter and back to his starting position on the other side of a ramp to try the jump again.
H
SO ‘KRAZY’ IT JUST MIGHT WORK
It would be an amazing feat for anyone, but Kai has bilateral pro found hearing loss. He wears hear ing aids, which help to an extent, but listening, especially in noisy areas, is still a challenge. It’s why Matthew believes traditional team sports, which typically rely on oral commu nication, would be difficult or frus trating for Kai. But on a scooter, Kai does not have to worry about that.

“Oh no, are you OK?” Mat thew Haines said to his son.
“I was pretty impressed by how good he was when he first started (at 4 years old), but it wasn’t anything absurd,” Leinberger said. “Within the next six months, I became con sistently impressed with how well he followed instructions and the speed at which he progressed. That’s the same to this day. We’ll have barely worked on a trick and he’ll nail it in threeAccordingtries.”
“He was transitioning from wear ing pull-ups into wearing regular underwear at the time,” Matthew Haines said. “We (Matthew and Kristen Haines, Kai’s mother) told him, ‘If you go 30 days with no acci dents and you potty like a big boy, we’ll get you a scooter.’ So 30 days later we had a scooter in the mail.”
Matthew said no matter where Kai’s career goes, the lessons he’s learning will help him, like goalsetting and the feeling you get when you finally achieve what you have been working hard to get.
“Determination and tenacity sees you through almost any difficulty you are going to face,” Matthew said. “Kai has no idea the muscles he is building right now. It will be one of the greatest gifts of his life.
It is a perspective backed up by action. Kai’s fall practice was not an isolated incident; he also fell while attempting a grind on a rail lining one of Payne Park’s bowls. After realizing he was OK — Kai wears protective padding both over and under his clothes — he got up and rode his scooter some more and even attempted two standing backflips.

Matthew believes Kai’s hearing challenges have given him a greater sense of his own body in relation to his environment and how he can use it to his advantage. It’s why Kai loves not just riding a scooter but doing parkour. Kai said he landed his first standing backflip when he was 5.
“Kai has no idea musclesthehe is building right now. It will be one of the greatest gifts of his life.”
Kai has no fear, and his ceiling in the sport has no ceiling, as long as he stays dedicated to it.
“It’s an ‘away zone’ that you can go to and just have fun.”
— Matthew Haines
er. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, Matthew and Kai practiced in their driveway and around their block. Matthew said Kai would grab sticks or rocks and stack them, seeing if he could jump them. Then Matthew constructed a plywood jump. But those quickly became structurally unsafe as Kai, who was 4 at the time, conquered bigger and bigger jumps. Matthew — who had no extreme sports experi ence prior to Kai’s interest — decided Kai needed a real teacher.

ow about Richie James? The Riverview High football alumnus spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and never got much of a chance to shine. Aside from special teams, the 5-foot-9 wide receiver was kept on the sidelines. He missed the 2021 season with a knee injury and became a free agent in 2022. Now with the New York Giants, James caught five passes in week one, the most of any Giants wideout and just one catch behind running back Saquon Barkley for the team lead. His five catches went for 59 yards and he also received one rushing attempt for two yards. New York beat Tennessee 21-20.Shout out to the Sarasota Christian football team for winning its first game as a program on Friday, beating Four Corners Charter 35-18. It’s more than a hobby at this point. It’s Kai’s favorite thing, and accord ing to Leinberger, he has a chance to be the best in the world.
This time . . . nailed it.

Of course, no one wants to take chances with Thor, but it’s frustrating for all concerned to know any event could be delayed (or canceled) at a moment’s notice. To make it worse, my car’s air conditioning has been on the fritz. Ever waited out a rain storm in a car with no air flow? You might as well have waited outside in the rain.
“Riding makes me happy and it’s fun,” Kai said. “I love it.”
Photos by Ryan Kohn Kai Haines, 6, shows why he’s called “Krazy Kai” as he completes a bar spin at Payne Park.
That’s when they found Lein berger. According to Matthew, Kai — among other things — is the young est American to ever land a tail whip, a move that requires the bottom of the scooter to spin 360 degrees, leav ing both of the rider’s feet in the air.
Fox, who has 4.3 million followers on Instagram thanks to his stunt scooter videos, even gave Kai a professional-grade scooter.
to Matthew, Kai’s inter est in the sport stems from a book the pair were reading before bed when Kai was 3. One of the pictures in the book — not one that was front and center — depicted someone riding a scooter. Kai immediately was drawn to the image and asked questions about it. Namely, what was that thing, and how could he get one?

Solomon certainly does. He’s a confident player. He is, to the best of my recollection, the only junior golfer I have interviewed who listed his putting skills as a major strength, if that tells you anything.
For Solomon, it’s a glimpse at a potential future. He’s not going to IMG for nothing. Solomon, at the very least, wants to play at a high collegiate level. If he can go pro after that, he will. It would buck the trends: There are only two Black men’s golfers in the top 100 world rankings, according to the UNDERRATED website. (On the girls’ side, there’s only one such player in the top 300.) That’s why it is so important events like these exist. It makes young players believe their dreams are possible to achieve.
Roman Solomon, the son of MLB All-Star Bobby Bonilla, took home the UNDERRATED Golf Curry Cup on Aug. 30.
I’m not betting against him. He’s got a pretty good mentor at home, giving him advice on how to reach the apex of a sport, and he’s got the tools. Remember the name now so you won’t have to later.

It’s not an easy thing to do when your father is a former professional athlete, but Solomon is off to a strong Solomon, start.who lives in Sarasota and is a sophomore at IMG Academy, is an aspiring golfer. It’s a sport he first picked up while hanging out with his father, six-time MLB All-Star Bobby Bonilla. Solomon said that as a 6-year-old, he would join his father whenever he played a round. Solomon would hit balls from the middle of the fairway — not very far or accurately, mind you, but hey, everyone has to learn somehow.Eventually, Solomon got the fundamentals down. He played other sports too, like basketball, which he still loves. He even has basketball emblems on his golf balls. But in the end, golf was the sport for him.
Solomon likes the pressure. Solomon said Bonilla has told him not to think about it too much, to go out to the course and play, and trust that his skills will be enough to carry him through. Keep it simple, in other words. It worked for Bonilla in baseball, and it’s working for Solomon in golf.
He received his trophy from Curry himself.

Upon arrival, Solomon immediately noticed a different feel to the event.“Itstood out to me how many kids that looked like me were there,” Solomon said. “It was cool. Definitely different (than most tournament he plays), but I think in a good way. I know it was a great experience for me personally. I knew a couple kids there from before but meeting other kids and seeing where they were from was cool.”
Even the aesthetics of the event were unique. There was a DJ playing music on the first day, for instance. And it must be nerve-wracking, even for a cool customer like Solomon, to concentrate on a putt when he knows Steph Curry is watching. But Solomon overcame the pressure, like his dad trained him to do. Solomon won the event After shooting two under par in round one — three strokes behind the leader — Solomon repeated the feat in round two, tying Jaxson Kenzo for the lead and then, eventually, winning in a playoff.
(She’s either 6-foot-0 or 6-foot-1 according to various websites. Either way, that is indeed much taller than I Solomon’santicipated.)storyisfarfrom over. Later this week he will be traveling to Philadelphia to play in an Advocates Pro Golf Association Tour event at Bluestone Country Club. The APGA, much like UNDERRATED Golf, is designed to bring more diversity to the game of golf but at the pro level. At the Bluestone event, Solomon will be playing against — and in pairings with — those pros.
“He told me ‘great job’ and to keep working hard,” Solomon said. “We took a picture together and I made the ‘night-night’ celebration with my hands. It was pretty funny.”Solomon put his hands into a sleeping position as he said that, recreating the moment. It may be slightly embarrassing, but he’ll never forget it. Solomon got to meet other celebrities too, like golf stars Collin Morikawa and Michelle Wie West, the latter of whom surprised Solomon by how tall she is.
It’s just fun to play. It’s an ‘away zone’ that you can go to and just have fun. You can take your mind off things and play.

I make designs. Eventually, I want to start an apparel business in addi tion to playing football, stuff you can wear on the field. So I make designs for apparel and I am saving them for when I’m able to start the business.
What is your best skill?
JudgeJaden

What is the appeal to you?
I like a lot of Asian foods as well as spaghetti.
What are your goals for this season?

WEEKTHEOFATHLETE

When I was younger, I played youth football with the Manatee Mus tangs. In my first game with them, I touched the ball five times and scored five touchdowns against the Palmetto Trojans.
What have you been working to improve?
If you would like to make a recommendation for the Sarasota/Siesta Key Observer’s Athlete of the Week feature, send it to Ryan Kohn RKohn@YourObserver.com.at
I don’t have a specific stat I want to get. I just want to get as much as the Lord allows me to get. I just have to play my game and see what hap pens.
What’s the vibe around the Sailors this season?
Which superpower would you pick?
My running style. I’m not a regular running back. I can be calm and patient or I can be aggressive. I pick and choose how I run based on the play.
I started when I was 8 in Mighty Mite (Pop Warner) ball. I always wanted to play it. I had seen it on TV and in person and thought it looked fun.
My inventory. The moves I have in my bag. I want to get as many as I can. I have also been working on my hands, catching the ball out of the
I’d probably pick a random one, like being able to charge a phone anytime I want. My phone is always dying.
I think people are happy with how we’re playing. We’re 2-1. Obviously that’s not the desired goal. We’d rather be 3-0. But we’re doing what we do and getting better as we go.
What is your favorite food?
What are your hobbies?
Jaden Judge is a junior on the Sara sota High football team. The running back had 146 total yards and a touchdown Sept. 9 in the Sailors’ 28-21 win against Booker High. The Sailors (2-1) will host Palmetto High (2-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
