YOUR TOWN Sid-E. Hall returns Sarasota has its fair share of wild birds, but City Hall has a “pet” bird of its own. Sid E. Hall, a wandering egret named by CommunicationsSarasotaManager Jan Thornburg, has made the seat of municipal government its home for years. Hall recently made its return to Sarasota, and staff caught the bird looking for lunch. It does make you ask: Is it the same bird that always returns to city hall or a collection of egrets that have the name Sid E. Hall? City staff aren’t sure about their resident egret, and frankly, they don’t want to know. We have to

Hanging over all these arguments are questions about the building’s safety. The Mira Mar has been under monitoring for nearly two months by building engineers and city inspectors to make sure it doesn’t become so unsafe that it’s uninhabitable.
In an Aug. 22 letter to tenants, the property’s management company says “the discovery of some substantial deficiencies with the building’s structure make occupancy of the building unlikely for the long term.” Seaward, which had intended to buy the property from Mark Kauffman and is a tenant, had planned to demolish the building and rebuild it. But a request to tear down the Mira Mar was turned down by Sarasota’s Historic Preservation Board in June. On Aug. 23, Seaward confirmed the sale was off. In the Aug. 22 letter, the property management firm tells tenants that the current owner, Mark Kauffman, “intends to pick up where Seaward left off in applying for a demo permit.” OF 25,
Sarasota developer Seaward Development has backed out of an agreement to buy the Mira Mar building after failing to gain permission to demolish it — a quest the building’s current owner will now undertake, claiming it is structurally questionable.

With 20 of 20 precincts, incum bent Ahearn Koch led the way with 34.72% of the vote. Trice was second with 19.51%. Lobeck was third with 19.13%. Ahearn-Koch was joined on the City Commission by Hagen Brody as at-large representatives in 2018, but Brody stepped away from the dais in pursuit of the Democratic nomination for the Sarasota County District 2 seat left opened by Repub lican Christian Ziegler’s decision to step away from his seat. Brody lost to former City Com missioner Fredd Atkins in that race, TuesdayLobecknight.isalawyer who frequently represents condo associations and homeowners groups in Sarasota and is a frequent critic of policies that allow for rapid development. “If elected, I will do my best to put our residents in the driver’s seat, not the developers, to shape Sarasota’s growth in a way that preserves and polishes our charm and character rather than create another over crowded city from which people seek to flee,” he said in a candidate profile published in the Sarasota Observer earlier this month. Trice served as the president of the Rosemary District Association and said she would focus on housing. “Sarasota succeeds only if work ing families have homes and busi ness owners can fill job openings,” she said. “Raising the issue with our city government as an individual had noCarleffect.”Shoffstall, who most recently ran a city committee to prioritize projects on which to spend the next round of county surtax money, fin ished more than seven points behind Lobeck in fourth place.
the difference-maker was how he related to voters of District 2, which is largely the city of Sarasota, who feel disenfranchised by the County Commission.“Thebottom line is that the Republican community of Sarasota had allowed the Republican Party at the County Commission level to do whatever they liked whenever they liked, and it wasn’t fair to anybody, Republicans and Democrats,” Atkins said. “And that’s what I changed. That’s what we will change.” Brody said he called Atkins on Tuesday night to concede and con gratulate him. “He was very gra cious,” Brody said, also posted this message on social media: “I’m going to focus on being as productive as possible my last couple months in the city and look forward to new opportunities to serve my commu nity.”Inthe first races for their respec tive districts since voters approved single-member district voting in 2018, the candidates are vying to replace District 2 representative and Chairman Alan Maio, who has served his maximum of eight years, and Christian Ziegler, who after one four-year term did not seek re-elec tion.
Top three vote-getters in City Commission campaign will compete for two atlarge seats in November.
ncumbent School Board member Bridget Ziegler led the way Tues day night, winning re-election in a sweep of conservative candidates to the nonpartisan five-member board. With all precincts reporting, Bridget Ziegler reclaimed her Dis trict 1 seat over Dawnyelle Singleton. “The community has spoken and it is crystal clear; they are demand ing a reset of the school board, and that’s exactly what they are going to get,” Ziegler wrote in a statement. “Taxpayers will be appreciated. Par ents will be respected and involved. Teachers will be respected and sup ported. Kids will be protected and served. And our school district will get the focus back to our mission: educating our children.” Singleton expressed pride in her campaign even while facing disap pointment in the loss. “I will continue to fight for the children, teachers and school com munities of Sarasota County,” she wrote.“My hope is that the new school board-elects and Bridget Ziegler do the right thing for all of the children in Sarasota County.” Robyn Marinelli was selected over opponent Lauren Kurnov for the District 4 seat, taking over the seat vacated by Shirley Brown. “It’s surreal,” Marinelli said. “I’m overwhelmed by the support. I think of my parents, who are both deceased, and I know they would be so proud of me.” “Our campaign focused on stu dent success and how to help our kids have a bright future,” Kurnov wrote in her statement. “We didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but I am proud of the campaign we ran and want to thank the many volunteers and sup porters who helped spread our posi tiveTimothymessage.”Enos was elected as the District 5 representative over Nora Cietek in the seat vacated by Jane Goodwin.“I’mhumbled these people have had the trust in me to come out and put me on the school board,” Enos said. “I’m ecstatic and exhausted.”

“No doubt it’s a beautiful project … but the word for me is it just comes down to ‘must,’” she said. “Must we do this? Can we do this? Yes, we can. Must we? Must we knowingly allow people to be exposed to something that in our documentation says will cause health and safety issues. I love this project, but I cannot support the motion.”Brody bristled at Ahearn-Koch’s assessment, pointing to the neigh borhoods adjacent to the site and admonished her for publicly sug gesting the residents are unsafe in their own Commissionerhomes. Liz Alpert sided with Brody. “It just doesn’t make sense to me to pull out this one little island of residences and say we can have them all around here, but we can’t have it there. That just makes no sense in terms of our planning,” she said. “If we’re putting people in harm’s way, then all of those residences around there ought to be demolished. We should take them by eminent domain and say they can’t be there anymore because it presents too much of a hazard.“Ithink that this is going to add to our housing stock and adding to the housing stock does bring down rents because it’s supply and demand.”
Aventon Senior Development Director Sean Flanagan countered prospective residents will be made aware of the proximity to the airport prior to signing a lease, he added, and the city and airport will be indemni fied against future plaining.”thewheredowntownIt’splainingPiccolocraft.ingsyearapproximatelycialagesworse,developed.guidelinestoofinghomesedyearsoperationspaperworkplaintsusement,opposescommissionersAirportSarasota-Bradentonliability.InternationalPresidentRickPiccolotoldhe“unabashedly”theapartmentdevelopcallingittheworstpossibleoftheproperty.Hesaidcomareinevitable,regardlessofsignedbytenants.Astheairportgrewandflightincreasedduringhis27there,hesaidSRQhasinvest$45millioninnoisemitigationforinneighborhoodssurroundtheformerkennelclubsite.Mostthosehomeswereinplacepriortheairport’semergenceandFAAfornoisemitigationwereAndthatnoiseisonlygoingtogethesaid.AlthoughSRQaverbetweenfiveandsixcommeraircraftoperationsanhour,ithas160,000operationsa—about18.5takeoffsandlandperhour,includingprivateair“I’vebeendoingthisalongtime,”said.“Theywillbecombecausetheyalwaysdo.verysimilartopeoplewhomoveandsay,‘Iwanttomovetheactionisgoingon.’Whenactionhappens,theystartcom

“Almost 94% of our units would fall within that 120% AMI limit,” Flanagan said. “If you have two peo ple in a three-bedroom splitting that rent and they each have their own lease, we’d have 100% of the project meeting the 120% of AMI. That’s our teachers, our police, our firefighters, hospital employees, airport employ ees — and that’s because we’re able to build a low-density project of this nature.”Ahearn-Koch acknowledged the apartments would be a welcomed addition but questioned if the city should knowingly allow to move for ward a project that she believes will put residents in harm’s way.
MORE WORKFORCE HOUSING
ith preliminary approval of voluntary annexation and rezoning from the Sarasota City Commission in hand, an apartment complex developer is at the starting gate in its quest to build a rental community on the site of the former Sarasota Kennel Club. Raleigh, North Carolina-based Aventon Cos. plans to build a medi um-density, 348-unit multifamily complex at the shuttered 26-acre dog track site at the corner of Uni versity Parkway and Old Bradenton Road. Recommended for disapproval by a 3-2 vote of the Planning Board — primarily over concerns about noise from flight operations at SarasotaBradenton International Airport across the street — city commis sioners instead sided with the need for workforce housing. By a 4-1 vote, commissioners approved the rezoning with Com missioner Jen Ahearn-Koch dis senting. They also approved the annexation of a 3.25-acre strip of land — essentially the backstretch of the track along the eastern edge of the property off DeSoto Road. Pending final approval Sept. 6, the property will be rezoned Multiple Family-Medium Density. During that same meeting, the City Commission is expected to hold a public hearing for the proposed rezoning and site plan for the devel opment.Ahearn-Koch opposed the rezon ing out of concern for future resi dents living under the glide path for SRQ, the runway 1,500 feet from the northern edge of the property and the frequent but not constant emis sion of noise from aircraft.
“We didn’t have anybody from the neighborhood speak against it at all. The neighborhood association is in favor of it,” Commissioner Hagen Brody said. “They understand that if this didn’t go through, there is a chance that it could end up being something much less compatible with the neighborhood and it may be more combative with the airport.”
Neighborhoods in similar proxim ity to SRQ as the proposed Aventon Sarasota number in the hundreds of homes, not including a planned 280unit apartment community, called Progress at University, bordering the western edge of the site. That complex, which sits more directly beneath the glide path than does the dog track, is making its way through the city’s Design Review Commit tee process and headed toward final consideration.Currentzoning of the site would allow for more intensive commercial uses such as a big box store or retail strip center — a convenience store has already been approved for the northwest corner at University and Old Bradenton — and the absence of opposition from surrounding neigh borhoods suggests an apartment community is the most compatible option for the property.
120% of the North Port-SarasotaBradenton average median income, Flanagan said, placing it at the top of the attainable workforce hous ing price range. Although that was concerning to some commissioners, Brody suggested the proximity to the airport will be a “natural governor” on the rents. A lower density community means no units added to the affordable housing stock, but it is one step in bolstering the workforce category. Flanagan said as more apartments come online, rents will naturally decrease throughout the city.
Commissioners move ahead with plan for 348 apartments at site of former dog track over objections of airport director who predicts complaints about jets.
The Sarasota Kennel Club closed in 2019. Raleigh, North Carolina-based Aventon Cos. plans to build a medium-density, 348-unit multifamily complex at the shuttered 26-acre dog track site.

The project encountered several challenges since it was first proposed by then-owner Mark Lucas in May 2020.The biggest obstacle was an effort to swap commercial square foot age for additional residential units, which Halflants contended to neigh boring residents concerned about traffic would result in fewer vehicle trips onto the site. Lucas acquired the club site in 2020. The Sarasota City Commission denied his first attempt at rezoning the property later that same year.

“The design of the Bath & Racquet Club creates a community in which one can live, work and play in,” reads text from the project’s submission.
Lucas teamed with Halflants’ firm, Halflants + Pichette, submitting a new plan in 2021, which was unani mously approved in November. Lucas sold the property to its new owners in January 2022 for $15.35 million, nearly tripling its value.

ANDREW WARFIELD STAFF WRITER More than two years after it was closed amid the onset of COV ID-19, the re-imagining of the shuttered Bath & Racquet Club in southern Sarasota is inching clos er to reality. A resubmittal hearing before the city’s Development Review Com mittee this past week addressed most of the remaining technical matters and, pending signoff with individual committee members on final details, is on track to appear before the Plan ning Board in October or November. Because the application is a site plan with minor conditional use, it is not required to go before the City Commission.Underthenew ownership of Sara sota Springs LLC, a joint venture between Federal Finance Group and Silver Sky Global Capital, archi tect Michael Halflants — himself a member of the Planning Board — is leading the design efforts of the project. It will incorporate the prior use of the 13.43-acre property, which will be enveloped by a mixeduse development of 256 residential rental units — 33 of the attainable housing — and 65,000 square feet of commercial and retail space situated behind Trader Joe’s on Tamiami Trail at Robinhood Street. Rather than tearing it down, the project not only will revive the club, it is intended to benefit the sur rounding neighborhood by replacing the dilapidated facility with a mod ern, mixed-use development.
The pool at the Bath & Racquet Club has gone unused for more than two years.
The ownership of the project was unavailable for comment. Planned club amenities include 16 tennis courts, three of them elevated above parking, along with 12 indoor and four outdoor pickleball courts. There will be an outdoor pool for the club and a new indoor fitness center. Built in 1969, the club had 29 courts when it closed, along with several racquetball courts.
The apartments, which will front two sides of the tennis complex, will have a pool, dog park, public park and a playground. The pedestrian trail wrapping around the develop ment will connect to the adjacent Mill Terrace community.
Total lot size: 13.43 acres Building coverage: 240,186 sf Maximum density: 25 dwelling units per acre Proposed density: 19 dwelling units per acre Residential units allowed: 277 Residential units proposed: 256 Attainable units: 33 Tennis courts: 16 Pickleball courts: 12 indoor, four outdoor A fence surrounding the pool is deteriorating outside a side entrance to the Bath & Racquet Club. n August 2021, Sarasota’s Down town Improvement District Board of Directors approved $400,000 in capital expendi tures toward a future Main Street “complete street” project — when and if that should occur. What DID board members didn’t expect was to find $8,000 in their bank account, the $400,000 having been moved into a fund to pay for the project, which, at this time, has no other city, state or federal money — the latter two which are being pur sued — in the project funding pipe line.During the City Commission meeting Aug. 15, DID Chair Eileen Hampshire said the appropriation was inappropriate, and her board wants that money returned to its account. After dissolving into a debate between Hampshire and commis sioners about losing street side park ing in favor of aesthetics and a park ing structure — and even further into whether the Bay Runner trolley the DID helps fund is actually beneficial to the business owners who pay into the special tax district — City Man ager Marlon Brown explained that it comes down to optics. The $400,000, Brown said, remains available to the DID for its maintenance and budgeted projects, including planning for an arts festi val. In the meantime, while the city is attempting to secure state grants for the Main Street project, it must show it has “skin” in the game — in this case in the form of the DID’s capital commitment.

The Downtown Improvement District chair tells commissioners the city removed funding for Main Street improvements, leaving it with $8,000 in its bank account.

A request for state funding for Main Street improvements was rejected during the most recent leg islative session, and Brown said any possible future success will require a demonstration of significant munic ipal“Ibuy-in.wouldcaution the commission to not touch that money because what legislators like to see is gov ernment having skin in the game,” Brown said. “By removing that mon ey, it shows that it no longer becomes a priority of this commission and the city … When we make that request again in the upcoming year, it shows the state that money is still available to be Whetherused.” that amount of skin is necessary at this time, observed Mayor Erik Arroyo, is subject to
DID, city clash over $400,000 transfer
A request for state funding for Main Street improvements was rejected during the most recent legislative session.

“So it’s not true that if the $400,000 stays in there, you can’t do the things that you’ve always done. You just can’t fund new projects, correct? That sounds very different to me than we only have $8,000 left and we aren’t going to be able to do anything, which is what was sounding like.”
DID DOWNTOWN BENEFIT? Before reaching that collegial con clusion, Hampshire and Brody debated whether what’s good for the whole of downtown is directly ben eficial to the DID, which, in addition to funding aesthetic enhancements and special events, contributes $50,000 annually to the Bay Run ner trolley that circulates between downtown and South Lido Beach. Hampshire conceded the Bay Run ner is far more successful than she believed it would be, but whether the DID truly benefits is questionable, which is why the board resisted the city’s request for its financial sup port of the three-year pilot project. “On Aug. 31 2021, City Manager Marlon Brown attended our meet ing to ask the DID board for $150,000 in funds toward the operation of the Bay Runner,” she said. “He empha sized it was an ask, not a demand, and anything would be appreciat ed. He received lukewarm support. The city subsequently confiscated $150,000 of DID funds for the trol ley.”In September, the City Commis sion voted to return the $150,000 to the DID, which in turn approved a contribution of $50,000 to the trol ley “as a show of good faith,” Hamp shire said. Still the precedent was set, Hampshire charged, for the city to reallocate DID funds “at will.” Brody says the DID sits on the sidelines of projects that benefit its membership rather than supporting them financially.
–Commissioner Liz Alpert
“I feel that sometimes the DID isn’t contributing to some of these big-ticket items in hopes that the city is just going to pick up the slack and get it done without the DID’s involvement,” Brody said. “That’s frustrating because I know that the DID is going to benefit from it, just like the trolley. So it’s nice to hear you’re in agreement that the trolley has benefited the district.” Hampshire clarified her remark about the Bay Runner. “I didn’t say that,” she said. “I said I thought the trolley was a good idea. I think it’s been good for Sarasota. I’m not entirely sure that it benefits the“Wedistrict.”canreroute it around the dis trict and see if anybody objects to that,” Brody responded. “I can tell you we’ve had 70,000 riders on the trolley since its inception in Feb ruary. It’s been an unprecedented success. And just the reluctance to acknowledge that is frustrating.” Brody applied similar senti ment to the planned Main Street improvement project, saying what’s good for downtown bolsters the city as a whole, and by extension, the DID. Hampshire argued downtown improvements don’t necessarily benefit businesses within the dis trict. Removing street parking near businesses in favor of aesthetics and moving those spaces into a parking deck, she cited as an example, dis courages customers. Brody bristled at that notion, say ing gone are the days when custom ers expect to park in front of busi nesses they visit. “We can argue all day that you should be able to walk two blocks to a store, but the fact is people don’t, so I can’t change the perception that people have,” Hampshire said. “I can’t tell you how many times people told me, ‘I was going to come in but there was no parking, so I went to the other store down the street.’ We can’t tell people what to think, and they do think if they can’t park at the door they’ll go somewhere else.” With no consensus on the matter that started the meandering dis cussion in sight, Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch brokered the agree ment in the form of a motion to hold a special meeting between the City Commission and the DID board, characterizing the dispute over the funds as a communications gap. “The conflict really is that that was our bank account,” Hampshire said. “And if this (Main Street project) goes through, we will have $8,000, so there won’t be a DID. There’s not any use in five people meeting 12 times a year.”

How much buy-in does the state need to see from us? There is no number; they just need to see some buy-in, and we can place that hold in many other places.”
Concluding the matter won’t be resolved in a single meeting by a 4-1 vote — with Commissioner Hagen Brody dissenting — the commission approved a future session with the DID board to hash out the dispute.

While driving into work the morning of primary election day 2022, I passed St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, which serves as a polling station for Precincts 211 and 213. Sarasota City Commission candidate Carl Shoffstall stood outside shaking hands with voters clad in red, white and blue. There’s something about election day, whether the primary or general, that brings an excitement to the air. Watching constituents exercise their right to vote brings about pride for our community and our democratic republic as a whole. I love seeing social media posts with parents taking their children with them to the polls to vote. Or the proud parents whose child is now 18 and can officially vote in his or her first election. I love the “I Voted” stickers sported by adults who haven’t included stickers in their attire since elementary school. By the time you read this column, the results of the 2022 primary elections will be out. But it’s worth acknowledging the efforts of what went into this year’s election. First, we’ll take the newspaper perspective. That’s what we know best.Sadly, as an increasing number of newspapers disappear, research has shown that communities that lack a local news source have more corrupt government. According to Northwestern University’s “The State of Local News 2022” report, “In communities without a credible source of local news, voter participation declines, corruption in both government and business increases and local residents end up paying more in taxes and at checkout.” That is why we’re proud to serve as one of your local sources of information, providing candidate profiles in print and online. Longtime readers are all too familiar with Editor and CEO Matt Walsh’s recommendations and endorsements, a practice many news organizations don’t provide anymore. Whether you agree or disagree with his choices, the point is to spark discussion and new ideas. “It’s difficult for so many people, with their busy lives of managing their families, jobs and businesses, to stay up to date on the candidates,” Walsh says. “So we think it’s one of the jobs of a newspaper to help our readers sort out some of the differences and nuances to the candidates. And when we make recommendations, I think our readers know we are recommending those candidates we think will do two things — defend and promote individual liberty and make people’s lives better.” In our newsrooms, election coverage is almost always exciting. All of our journalists reporting election results are plied with pizza to tie them over into late hours, and our printer’s presses are on standby, holding back on preparing pages one and three of our papers until we send the final election results. Circulating these election results can be quite scary as well. I’ll never forget that shortly after I became publisher in 2016, I received a phone call from our circulation manager at 5 a.m. the morning after the 2016 primary election when Tropical Storm Hermine was moving up the Gulf Coast of Florida. “We can’t deliver the papers. It’s too dangerous,” he said. “You have to get the papers out,” I frantically replied, “They have the electionLuckily, results!”itlooks like the weather forecast includes only a few scattered thunderstorms for this week’s election result delivery. Of course, election results are posted and available on YourObserver.com in realSure, time.we’re all a bit sick of the direct mailers that stuff our mailboxes, the constant barrage of text messages received by political parties and PACs and the signs crowding our street corners. But you have to give credit to each and every single candidate who had the courage to run for public office. No matter your beliefs or party affiliate, the work that goes into campaigning for public office is daunting. And, quite honestly, thankless. These individuals are offering up their time for public service for little pay to help make their communities a better place and make sure your voices are heard. But these campaigns can be draining with the attacks on their character in the media and by their opponents.

SATURDAY, AUG. 20 FORT SERTA 12:24 p.m., 1600 block of Laurel Street Dispute: A complaint about a wall made of mattresses brought a patrol officer to a residence where two roommates were involved in a dispute. The caller told the officer his roommate placed the mattresses to create a separation, which also cut off a portion of shared area he could no longer access, specifically the use of a microwave oven. The wall builder placed the microwave on his side of the barricade and told the caller to not come to his side of the room. The officer explained that because it is a shared residence, both parties had the equal right to access common areas, including the microwave oven, and if they have any future similar disputes, they should contact their landlord.
“There are 10 homes on the mar ket now on our local islands and in downtown Sarasota priced over $10 million, and we expect this incred ible property to sell quickly with the new buyer still able to customize some of the high-end interior finish work,” said Patrick DiPinto, Seaward Development broker and princi pal. “The market here in Southwest Florida continues to flourish.”
“Our vision was to take full advan tage of the sweeping views of Big Pass and the Gulf of Mexico for this resi dence to embody a modern aesthetic that incorporates the architectural principles of the Sarasota School of Architecture,” said Mark Sultana, architect and principal with DSDG Architects, speaking of the design style named for the area.

TUESDAY, AUG. 16 VEHICLE HELD HOSTAGE 1:18 p.m., 2100 block of North Washington Boulevard Dispute: An argument over payment and service brought an officer to an auto repair shop, where a worker refused to lower a customer’s vehicle from a lift unless he paid $20 for service related to tires the business did not have in stock. The customer called police to help retrieve his vehicle. Police spoke to the worker, who explained he spent 45 minutes with the customer, and although the shop did not have the tires he wanted, the charge was for his time. The officer explained the dispute was a civil matter and the worker could not hold the customer’s vehicle for services not rendered. The worker lowered the vehicle and the customer left the area.

AUGUST 25, 2022 ARTS + ENTERTAINMENT
ABUILDINGBASELFROM SCRATCH
SPENCER FORDIN A+E FEDITOR or years, Jeffery Kin made the most of theatrical spaces, milking them for every ounce of drama and pathos. Now he’s using Sarasota’s arts community as a larger canvas, and he’s hop ing to pull the groups together as collabora tors in building a weeklong arts festival. Kin, who calls himself “a theater person with a farmer’s work ethic,” is thinking big, and he’s circling November 2024 as the debut for his still unnamed festival. He’s been laying the groundwork for the past nine months, assembling a group of employees and building a board for the incorporation of Sarasota Rising, his pro duction company. Kin says he plans for his company to be a 501c3 organization as of Oct. 1, and he’s going to spend the next 26 months moving moun tains to give Sarasota its own Art Basel-type event.“We want to drum up cultural tourism. It’s going to start local, then statewide, then the Southeast and then the nation,” he says. “In 10 years, we want this to be an international festival. We will want people to be able to say, ‘We’ve got to be in Sarasota at this time, because we’re going to see stuff that we would never be able to see anywhere else.’”
Jeffery Kin hopes to use Sarasota as his canvas to build a lasting arts festival.
Spencer Fordin
Kin, who spent 15 years with The Players Centre for Performing Arts, came to this mission organically. He says he was happy in his old role as artistic director for the Play ers when Mark Kauffman of the Downtown Improvement District asked him to help in recruiting a festival director. Kin swished that idea around in his mind and immediately recognized that he’d love the opportunity to create a lasting institu tion. In the past nine months, he’s embarked on what he calls an “arts nourishment,” vis iting festivals all over the country. He went to Sun Fest in West Palm Beach and met with the organizers, where they gave him a behind-the-scenes tour and talked about their growth and development. He volunteered at the Columbus Arts Festival just to see how things get done on a granular level. He went to the Spoleto Festival USA in South Carolina and several other regional events, and he came away convinced that all the ingredients for success are already here. “A festival brings a different vibe to a com munity. A festival really is a celebration of who you are,” he says. “The meat of our fes tival is already here. The meat and potatoes Jeffery Kin spent 15 years develop ing drama at the Players Centre, and now he’s hoping to build a bigger stage for all of Sarasota’s arts organizations.

Spencer Fordin Jeffery Kin says he developed a lot of relationships during his time in Sarasota and hopes to nurture even more through his festival.
“And that’s really all the Festival is. Just do what you do. Be brilliant, be excellent, create something wonderful in that timeframe.”

Kin didn’t want to name specific organizations because none of them have committed to be a part of the festival yet, but he hopes to have a wide sampling of performing arts, and he wants to get the hotels and restaurants and museums involved to better cater to incoming tourists.

THROUGH JAN 7, 2024 380831-1 are all the great organizations that we all know and love. Large and small. “What we get to do as an organiza tion is be the icing on the cake. We get to bring in a great band, we get to bring in a great dance concert, we get to bring in something unique.” Kin doesn’t want to pull the arts groups under his umbrella; he wants everyone to share in the process. His first benefactor was the Downtown Improvement District, which gave him $100,000 in seed money. And immediately, he had to disap point them because they wanted the festival to be in August. That’s just not feasible in Sarasota for a number of reasons including the heat. Some arts organizations are shuttered for the summer due to the lack of snowbird customers. Kin shared a questionnaire with all of the local arts organizations through the Arts and Cultural Alli ance of Sarasota County, and what came back as the best time to hold a festival would be October or Novem ber. That’s when theater and arts organizations are ramping back up here; they wouldn’t have to do any thing beyond share the programming they’re“Let’spreparing.sayThePlayers has a musi cal happening in that time,” he says. “That’s great. That’s all you have to do. What I’m hoping to be able to do is to bring them more customers, to bring them more butts in seats.”
Kin wants the festival to cast the widest net possible. He wants to include as many arts organizations as possible, from the ones with their own venues to the ones looking for a place to play. He wants to collaborate amongst organizations to develop unique pro gramming, and he wants to take over downtown streets for art fairs. What might that look like?
“We’re building something from scratch, which is exciting in itself,” he says. “We’re really creating a long-term organization that’s not going to just be a fly-by-night thing. “This is something that we can build on year after year.”
ENTERTAINMENT+ARTS
“We’re going to start small. It’s not going to be Spoleto overnight,” he says. “But what we really want to do is organize our arts groups so that if they have a space, they’re going to produce something great in the timeline of the festival. “And that’s really all the Festival is. Just do what you do. Be brilliant, be excellent, create something wonder ful in that timeframe.” It’s a gigantic vision, and he said the community has been more than receptive.Kinsays he wasn’t sure how many organizations would reply to his questionnaire, but most of them did. They see potential for the festival and want to be a part of it. But there’s still a lot of work to do. Kin says the Downtown Improve ment District is currently weighing whether it can authorize another $100,000 in funding for his venture. He also said Sarasota Rising raised around $225,000 in its first year of existence, and he hopes to double that next year. By the time the fes tival is born, Kin expects it to cost about $1 million to operate. To arrive at those numbers, Kin hired a consultant named Vern Biatt, a certified festival and event execu tive, to help him plot the event’s future, and he also said that phi lanthropist Ariane Dart of the Dart Family Foundation has been a great resource for him. Now, he says, the festival has to grow into its own footprint. “The timing is perfect,” he says. “The relationship is awesome because she knows how to get stuff done on a large scale, and I know how to pull together an organization. “We really are starting to build this together, knowing that Oct. 1, the start of our second year, we’ll have a board. We’ll put them to work because there’s a lot of work to do in the next two years.” They still have to name the festi val. They have to organize which arts organizations are willing and able to participate and they have to line up all the venues to do that. For now, Kin is working out of his kitchen, and he’s traveling the coun try auditing festivals. Just last week, he went to a Ten nessee Williams Festival in St. Lou is, and he’s prepping for an event in Orlando.Kinmeets once a month with a group he calls his “startup” team. They’ve put together a mission values statement, and they have a logo for Sarasota Rising, but they know the clock is ticking on the way to November 2024.

HOW IT’S MADE: The star of this dish is the super-fresh seafood brought in by Wallin’s purveyors, and all three elements are prepared simply with butter and house sea soning.Wallin says the lobster tail, the snapper filet and the scallops all are grilled, and they’re accompanied by garlic parsley potatoes and carrots roasted in honey and garlic. “This is a white tablecloth dinner at a fish house,” he says. “I love all walks of life. I want everybody from the garbage man to the mayor to eat at my restaurant. That’s kind of what we have here. You can have a $40 dinner. And then the husband could have a shrimp dish for 13 bucks. We see that all the time.”
THE FAMILY BUSINESS: Wallin’s great-grandfather, Claus Wallin, began fishing the Sarasota waters a century ago, and his son Walt Sr., later took over. Walt’s son — Brett Wallin’s dad, Tom Wallin — began working in the fish market from an early age, and he later opened the current location of Walt’s Fish Market on Tamiami Trail. Tom Wallin took over the busi ness from Walt in 1981, and decades later, he would pass it down to his son Brett. Brett Wallin started in the family business as a teenager, and he says he loved it from the start.

FREE FISH DIP: You won’t have to pay for another Walt’s calling card. Right when you sit down, you’ll get a taste of their smoked fish dip, which is a reminder of simpler times gone by. Wallin says that smoked mullet was one of the first things the Wal lins ever sold at Walt’s because they were able to preserve the fish lon ger by smoking it. He says he enjoys giving customers a taste before they even open the menu. “It’s just neat to be able to do that. Even during COVID or inflation,” he says. “It’s a very expensive thing for me to do, but I’m going to continue doing it. I’ll never take it away.” - SPENCER FORDIN

“I’d take my 30-foot Whaler to school and tie it onto the tree and then go to school,” he says. “I’d come to school wet, smelling like fish because I was spearfishing before. The teachers would call my dad and say, ‘Your kid smells like fish.’ “And he’d say to them, ‘What do you think we do for a living?’”
WHAT’S THE DISH: Walt’s Fish Market has been filling Sarasota bellies with fresh fish for more than 100 years, and there’s one dish on the menu that never falls out of favor. Brett Wallin, the fourth-genera tion owner of Walt’s, says that the Captain’s Platter, a delectable mix of red snapper filet, lobster tail and sea scallops, is his most popular dish. Most of the time, in fact, he doesn’t see people eating it; he sees debris they’ve left behind. “When I’m walking around and talking to people, the only reason I know they ordered the platter is because only the shell of the lobster is left,” he says. “Everything else is gone.”
FRESH CATCH: Wallin says that sometimes the fish come directly from the boat to the market, and you won’t just see it in the display case. If you’re there at the right time, you might see a truck roll up with about 600 pounds of snapper. “My dad always said, ‘If you start with the fresh ingredients, you don’t have to worry about all the sauces,’” says“You’reWallin.starting with fresh product. It’s right there. That’s what I’m going to sell my grandmother, my mom and all of my favorite customers.”

HARRY SAYER STAFF WRITER Joe Jennings doesn’t feel 99. Anything but. The Sarasota resident has worked hard to stay busy and make the most of his near-100 years of living. He’s served in the military during multiple conflicts, helped sink a German submarine during World War II, been involved in the intelligence community years after, and has spent his retirement years working on tennis racket designs and patents with his partner in sunny Florida. It’s been a full life, and the result of that has been some big moments and close connections that Jennings treasures. He’s feeling particularly reflective of late — he turns 100 on Sept.“I’ve14.enjoyed a lot of things,” Jen nings said. “I never let anyone stop me from what I wanted to do.” Jennings was born in Oklaho ma and grew up with a father who worked as an auto mechanic and a mother who looked after him and his four siblings. He concedes child hood wasn’t always easy — he had to deliver newspapers at age 12 to help the family make ends meet. Jennings said he enlisted imme diately at 19 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After a brief attempt at the Army Air Corps — he says he didn’t have the eyes for avia tion — in 1942 Jennings joined the Navy, where he worked as an aviation radio operator doing anti-submarine patrols in the Atlantic. “Our job was to keep submarines down,” Jennings said. “That was rewarding to me; it was work I was interested in.”
It’s been a long life, but one day that stands out in his mind was when he and other service members iden tified and sank a German subma rine off the coast of Brazil in 1943. He’d trained for hours and hours for that moment, and the attack went smoothly when it finally arrived. “We knew what to do, when to do it and how to do it,” Jennings said. “We executed with perfect precision. I never thought about (the impact), we were just doing our jobs.”
“Only when I was fully retired did I realize I wanted to keep doing this kind of thing,” Jennings said. “I had time and I started working on things.”Jennings reached his 80s and eventually his 90s and found him self unable to play tennis in the way he used to. Besides, he’s still keep ing active — whenever Barker goes on walks at Marina Jack, Jennings is nearby hitting plastic golf balls to keep himself in shape. Soon enough, Jennings will cele brate his life. More than 100 friends are throwing him a 100th birthday celebration at the Field Club. It’s a hard thing to wrap his head around. He doesn’t feel like he’s done anything special to get to this point — he’s had people ask for his secret, and he just tells them it’s likely a matter of healthy activity and genetics. “I don’t know how you’re sup posed to feel at 100, but I don’t feel that.”How he’s lived as a person is some thing Jennings is more confident about. The days have come and gone, and he’s found himself in a variety of places and situations, but he says he’s always made sure to embrace each day with all the excitement he can“Ifind.can’t think of a day in my life that I didn’t look forward to,” Jen nings said. “I think that’s important. I look back and think ‘Would I live that life again?’” and I think ‘Abso lutely.’”

He used his talents gathered in the military and returned to Oklahoma City after the war to open a radio repair shop. “I understood electronics,” Jen nings said. “I never came across something I couldn’t repair.” Jennings spent some time doing that while attending night school to get his degree before returning to the military to serve in the Korean War. That conflict gave way to a fulltime career in the military that took Jennings and his family to France and several other countries. He later worked in the civilian intelligence community in Washington, D.C. before eventually moving to Sarasota in the “My’70s.first impressions of Sarasota were positive,” Jennings said. “I sud denly found out anything I wanted to do, I could do in Sarasota.”
Joe Jennings’ near-century of life has been full of adventures and activity.
Joe Jennings and Denise Barker have embraced life and kept busy over the past 11 years. “My first impressions of Sarasota were positive. I suddenly found out anything I wanted to do, I could do in Sarasota.” — Joe Jennings
That included working on cars — he’s never lost his love of tinkering — and even he spent time as a boat captain.In2011, his hobby of team handball gave way to tennis, a sport he hadn’t touched in years but didn’t cause any pain to his now-aching back, at the Field Club. It was there he met Denise Barker, the New York-turned-Sarasota resi dent who would be his future part ner. They had a contentious start playing tennis — she actually beat him in their first match. The two bonded and went steady, eventually going on a cruise together and spontaneously deciding to get married.“Thepastor looked at us and said ‘I can tell you have the same values, I want to marry you in the chapel,’” BarkerJennings’said. love of repair and design has never dimmed, and he’s spent years working on a tennis racket design that boosts hitting power without doing damage to the elbow.

City Commissioner Hagen Brody and Deputy City Manager Pat Robinson attended. Clergy members from a variety of faiths and places of worship attended the AJC event and supported the group’s message.
AJC West Coast Florida Director Brian Lipton had a strong message about confronting hate during the organization’s final Lunch and Learn event of the summer on Aug. 16. “If haters come after me because I’m a Jew, they will feel empowered to come after Blacks, Hispanics, gays, Christians, Asians, Muslims. “ Lipton said. “We must come together, and we must stop hate.” It was a statement that drew applause from the crowd. And the support didn’t end there. The event featured clergy members from different faith institutions joining AJC in support. Representatives from Catholic Diocese, the Lutheran Church, the Episcopal Church, the Unity Church of Sarasota and several synagogues attended in a show of solidarity with AJC. The event’s speaker was AJC’s U.S. Director for Combating Antisemitism Holly Huffnagle, who has led AJC’s response to antisemitism in the U.S. since early 2020. After Lipton addressed the crowd, the audience enjoyed lunch before hearing Huffnagle speak on the importance of confronting a rising wave of antisemitism in the U.S.

T
he Sarasota Young Professionals group is busy throughout the year, with members participating in a number of programs and meetups that encourage professional growth and networking opportunities.
The Sarasota Chamber group’s largest event every year, though, is the Young Professional Summit, a halfday affair that brings dozens of members together to listen to a number of speakers and connect for future endeavors. Members met early Friday for coffee and breakfast before sitting to be welcomed by Sarasota Chamber Programs Manager Sarah Rachon, who thanked the assembled audience. The day’s program continued with a segment from keynote speaker Mitch Lomazov, of Excellence Performance, who discussed the importance of seizing opportunities when they present themselves. It was then time for the presentation of the annual Young Professional of the Year award, which was given to Zack Holzworth of Willis Smith Construction Inc.
Attendees broke off to mingle and later participate in learning sessions about understanding self worth, building confidence and overcoming the fear of the first step.

Aguilar began his year of competition by finishing first allaround in the Men’s 16 division of the 2022 Florida Men’s State Championships on March 4-6 in Alachua. Level 10 is the highest level of the Junior Olympic program overseen by USA Gymnastics. At the state championships, Aguilar finished first in the floor, pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and tied for first in the high bar.

The Area’s most Trusted Name since 1974
Jacques Bristol is a Booker High grad who started all 13 games for Central Michigan at defensive tackle a season ago. Bristol, a junior, is a great disrupter and has become a stalwart for the Chippewas as the program gets turned around by former Florida coach Jim McElwain. Bristol had 36 tackles in 2021 (5.5 tackles for loss) to go with three sacks and three pass breakups. I don’t see a reason, barring injury, why those numbers could not increase in 2022.
PROSE If you’re anything like me, the day you’ve been waiting about nine months for is finally here. College football is back. I love the NFL, and it is undeniably better football — how could it not be? — but there is a certain artificialness to the game that keeps it from being my favorite sport. If each NFL game is an entertaining battle between talented athletes, each college football game is a battle to determine the lightness or heaviness of each fan’s soul. Rivalries are real. You root for a school because you went there, or your kids (or parents) went there or you know people on the team from watching them dominate the high school gridiron on Friday nights. You root for a school because it is part of you. You’re not rooting for a uniform. You’re rooting for a place, for memories, for traditions. The Sarasota area always has participants in these games. How could it not with all the talent here? And 2022 is no different. As the college football season kicks off, I wanted to give my annual rundown of a handful of area alumni you can watch play college football this season. Even more than in years past, the 2022 crop could turn out to be a special one, with multiple players entrenched in their teams’ starting lineups and more who could earn that right as the season progresses. It’s more than I can fit in one column. Just know that if someone’s name isn’t on here, I’m likely still keeping track of their progress. It would be wrong to start anywhere other than with Brian Battie, the former Sarasota High stud running back entering his junior season at South Florida as quite literally the best kick returner in the country. Battie was named a consensus All-American in 2021 after, among other things, returning three kicks for touchdowns, which led the nation. Battie was also named to the 2022 Paul Hornung Award watch list. That award goes to the more versatile player in the nation. In addition to his return stats, Battie ran for 324 yards and a touchdown and caught seven passes for 67 yards in 2021. He’ll have to put up bigger offensive numbers than that to win the Hornung, and in my opinion, it would be a good idea for USF to let him try. Few are better in the open field than Battie.

Bumper crop to keep an eye on
Former Booker High star Jacques Bristol has become a stalwart at defensive tackle for Central Michigan.
Photo courtesy of Michigan State Athletics Charles Brantley lines up against a Youngstown State wideout as a freshman in 2021. The former Riverview defensive back is a big part of the Spartan’s defensive plan in 2022.
Former Riverview High defensive back Zahodri Jackson spent five seasons at Utah State (one a redshirt season), but decided this offseason to use his “COVID-19 do-over” season of eligibility and transfer to North Texas. Jackson played in 35 games at Utah State, making 10 starts. He racked up 56 tackles and six pass breakups. Until North Texas takes the field and we get a look at their defensive back rotations, it’s tough to say how much playing time Jackson will get, but for his sake, I hope it is quite a bit. Speaking of guys I hope find better luck in 2022, Booker alum Talik Keaton missed all of his 2021 season at Marshall because of a broken hand — it’s tough to catch passes as a wide receiver without two good ones. Keaton had a promising sophomore season in 2020, making six starts and catching 17 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown, plus getting named to the All-Conference USA First Team as a punt returner. He appears to be healthy for the start of this season. He’s a real threat with theWeball.also have a high-profile newbie: Riverview grad Jaron Glover is a freshman wideout at Michigan State. Who knows how much time he’ll see, but he’s talented enough to make noise early in his career. Then we have two guys who are from Sarasota but didn’t graduate from a city high school. I could mention them anyway, since both started their playing careers at Riverview High — and because they’re quite fun to watch. My column, my rules, after all. Charles Brantley spent two seasons with the Rams before transferring to Venice High. He’s now a sophomore teammate of Glover’s at Michigan State and Brantley, a defensive back, already has become a big part of the Spartans’ plans. He played in eight games as a freshman, earning a start against Purdue, before a shoulder injury ended his season. Before then, Brantley made arguably the team’s biggest play of the year, snagging a one-handed interception with less than a minute remaining to seal a win against rival Michigan. Assuming Brantley is back to full health, he has the potential to be one of the top young cornerbacks in the Big Ten Conference. Then there is Malachi Wideman, who played both football and basketball for the Rams for three years before heading to Venice for his senior Widemanseason.enrolled at Tennessee and spent one season with the Vols before transferring to play for Deion Sanders at Jackson State, a historically Black university in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Wideman was a large part of Jackson State’s turnaround in 2021. He caught 34 passes for 540 yards and was tied for the SWAC lead with 12 touchdowns. Wideman is one of four Jackson State players to land on the 2022 Black College Football HOF Player of the Year watch list alongside quarterback Shedeur Sanders, kick returner Isaiah Bolden and cornerback Travis Hunter, the No. 1 overall player in the country in the Class of 2022. Deion Sanders is building something at Jackson State and if you get a chance to watch the Tigers — their Sept. 4 opening game against Florida A&M is on ESPN2 — I suggest you do so. They’re fun as heck.

Rachel Chambers is a 50-year-old Sarasota triathlete and was the first female finisher and 12th overall (1:01:56) out of 226 participants at the 2022 Top Gun Triathlon held Aug. 6 in St. Petersburg. When did you start competing in triathlon? You know, I just turned 50 and I ran my first triathlon 25 years ago, so I have been doing it for half my life now. I started as a runner in junior high and high school in Noblesville, Indiana. Then I attended Indiana University in Bloomington and would bike around campus there. Then I moved here and met my husband (Tom Chambers) 26 years ago. He was a triathlete, so I went to one of his races and loved the energy of it. It was so positive. I wanted to com pete in it myself so I worked on my swimming. The first triathlon I ever ran was the Clermont sprint triath lon a year later. What is the appeal to you? The positive energy is a big part of it, but I also love the variety of training

you get. Not every day is the same. You’re moving between the pool and the track and your bike. I like to train consistently and train hard and if I was a single-sport athlete, I wouldn’t be able to do that. You get overuse injuries because you are using the same motions and muscles every day. So I’m adaptable. I like switch ing it up. What is your favorite leg of the triathlon? I don’t know if I have one anymore. In the beginning, I couldn’t wait to run. Then it was the bike. Now I love the swim just as much. And you know, a triathlon is more than just running, biking and swim ming. There’s the transitions, too, and that’s where I really shine. You have to move fast. Some people sit around on buckets and take their time putting on their socks. Not me. What makes for a good transition? Rehearsing is important. My hus band is an amazing supporter and he will help me research the course and find out where we swim in and out, bike in and out, etc. Knowing your spots is important. Also, at the Fort De Soto race (Top Gun Triath lon), there were so many bikes. I wanted a way to see where my bike was, but if you put something on the back of your bike to mark it, the officials will take it away. So I put some baby powder on the concrete next to my bike.
