Sandy Nichols made the most of the day with her sand sculpture.
Making the most of it Siesta Key was poised to host an amateur sand-sculpting competition last Saturday, with adults and children alike signed up to dig, smooth and shape the beach’s raw materials. But storms ruined those plans for almost all of the event’s participants. New Jersey resident and sand-sculpture competitor Sandy Nichols, however, didn’t let the gray skies keep her down. She and her husband, Jim, still made the trek to Siesta Key Beach to create artwork in the sand. Nichols acknowledged that it was frustrating to see the competition canceled, but she found her calm and groove working on her sand sculpture: a human woman crafting a sand sculpture.

New dogs on the job Sarasota Police have a pair of new officers on the job – fourlegged ones, in fact. Bruin and Brody were accepted as new members of the force recently, joining their two-legged partners after 600 hours of training that included tracking, obedience, area searches and more. They are now part of the department’s patrol division. Both Bruin and Brody are Belgian Malinois-German shepherd mixes from Hungary. Brody is a month older, having been born in April 2020. Brody has been partnered with Officer Jacob Nelson, and Bruin joins Officer Adam Bearden (shown above).
