With a historically intense hurricane moving through the Atlantic and headed toward Florida, Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Ed McCrane had to strike a balance between stressing the urgent need to prepare but avoiding a sense of hysteria. The size and force of Hurricane Irma, a category 5 storm, was enough to panic even longtime residents. Itâs a sweet celebration The women in the Pines of Sarasota centenarian club have had their fair share of excitement in the past month. They celebrated hitting one of lifeâs most elusive mile markers â their 100th birthdays. On Aug. 24, the 12 women of the Pinesâs centenarian club got a taste of the limelight when they were introduced to the nation on NBCâs âToday Showâ 100th birthday segment, sponsored by Smuckers.
