County OKs talks for property sale After receiving six offers to purchase the downtown site of the Sarasota County Administration Building for $20 million or higher, the County Commission voted Wednesday to enter negotiations with all six companies that submitted a proposal to buy the land.

The county intends to sell the property at 1660 Ringling Blvd. and two adjoining properties, relocating its administrative center out of the city of Sarasota. In May, the county decided to list the 5.3-acre downtown tract as surplus land and pursue a move to a county-owned property near Interstate 75 at 1301 Cattlemen Road.

All six bids for the site include a purchase price between $20 million and $23.5 million. Five of the six include a leaseback option that would require the county to pay at least $1.6 million annually to stay in the building after the sale until a new administrative facility is constructed.

“My question to staff when I first saw this page is, ‘Why are the prices pretty much in line with each other but all low?’” Commissioner Nancy Detert said. “And he said it has to do with our assessment according to the property appraiser, and that assessment is as a government use.”

The commission ultimately felt comfortable empowering staff to move forward with negotiations.

Lido Key’s beaches served as a nesting hub for black skimmers, snowy plovers and least terns. The latter two returned to lay a few nests on South Lido, a recently renourished area of beach where birds haven’t gone since 2013. A cat was also believed to have scared

One year later, similar concerns arose over an application associated with the bar Cask and Ale on Main Street. At the same time, a different group of downtown residents wrote letters of support, calling the business a welcome addition. The City Commission approved the application, and Cask and Ale remains open today.

Since that vote, the city has approved permits related to alcohol sales for 99 Bottles on Second Street and Brewster’s Tavern and Raffurty’s on Main Street.

Between bars and restaurants, there are 17 businesses with full liquor licenses in the 1300, 1400 and 1500 blocks of Main Street.

There are four more on Lemon Avenue between First Street and State Street; Corona Cigar Co. would be the fifth.

Debates over downtown liquor sales might be intensifying because of an influx of new residents, some of whom are closer to commercial properties. An alley separates the 157 residences in The Mark from the 1400 block of Main Street, the home of bars including Gator Club, Brewster’s and Joe’s.

Some residents at The Mark have raised complaints about those bars, urging the city to establish more stringent noise regulations.

hen downtown property owner Lou Donato approached Jeff Borysiewicz about opening a cigar bar in the former Sur La Table space at Lemon Avenue and First Street, Borysiewicz thought it sounded like a great fit.

Borysiewicz owns Corona Cigar Co., a chain of cigar stores that opened a Tampa location in 2015.

When he looked at downtown Sarasota, he saw a vibrant city center with a mix of businesses.

He thought a cigar bar could help contribute to that vibrancy.

At a community workshop on Aug. 18, however, half a dozen downtown residents challenged his beliefs. Some questioned whether another establishment serving liquor was appropriate.

Others painted an ugly picture of downtown for Borysiewicz.

“I’m not sure how well you know Sarasota,” said John Bordeaux, a resident of The Mark condominium. “I live downtown, and I’ve noticed the clientele that frequent the bars downtown — these are the $3 happy hour beer guys, the guys who get arrested for assault and battery on Main Street at 2 in the morning. These aren’t the guys lined up to buy $50 cigars and $50 single malts, OK?” Linda Sloan is the type of downtown resident Borysiewicz might have envisioned. She said she enjoys cigars and bourbon and thought the Corona Cigar proposal looked fun. But she was skeptical about the prospect of any liquor-selling establishment moving into the Lemon Avenue site because she feared there were too many of those already.

Ian Black, a supporter of the Corona Cigar proposal, said he moved into The Mark because he wants to be in the center of the city’s most intense district.

“We live there because we enjoy the vibrancy and vitality of the area,” Black said.

The same is true for Ernie Ritz, who lives across the street from the proposed Lemon Avenue storefront. He noted that he’s already neighbors with Bevardi’s Salute and Mattison’s City Grille, two restaurants that serve liquor and frequently feature live music.

For him, it’s a good thing.

“I enjoy all of that music,” Ritz said. “I enjoy the laughter. I’m used to it.”

Objections to downtown bars have often drawn pushback from supporters who are less consistent in engaging with their local

government. In 2020, before the city approved a conditional use application for Brewster’s, resident Raymmar Tirado expressed frustration with the uncertainty bar proprietors must navigate before they can obtain a liquor license. Although some downtown residents feared downtown was in danger of being overrun by bars, Tirado said there still remained limited nightlife options in Sarasota.

“It’s silly that we can’t create an area for young people to come and hang out downtown that isn’t a fine dining restaurant or uppity spot mostly intended for the older demographic,” Tirado said.

Borysiewicz, meanwhile, was undeterred. He said he understood why people might be concerned and that he was intent on being a good neighbor. Still, he thought most of the fears came from people who didn’t really understand the nature of his business, which he said derives about 60% of its income from retail sales.

Given the challenges retailers and restaurants are facing, he said he hoped the city would continue to embrace businesses that contribute to an active downtown — regardless of whether or not a liquor license might be attached.

“We’re here to bring something positive to the community,” Borysiewicz said.

For the second time in two weeks, the Sarasota County Planning Commission recommended approval of regulatory adjustments designed to facilitate a hotel project on Siesta Key. On Sept. 2, the advisory board voted 7-2 in favor of a pair of special-exception applications associated with a development at 1260 Old Stickney Point Road and 1267 Stickney Point Road. The developer, Gary Kompothecras, plans to build a seven-story hotel with up to 120 rooms near the south bridge to Siesta Key. The proposal requires a series of changes and exceptions to restrictions in place for the 1.75acre parcels. The special exceptions seek to permit transient accommodations in the commercial general zoning district and allow a height increase above the maximum of 35 feet. The hotel building, on Old Stickney Point Road, would be up to 83 feet tall.

Representatives for the applicant framed the project as one suitable for the commercial area.

Although the proposal requires a special exception to build up to seven stories, attorney Charlie Bailey noted the property was adjacent to the six- and 10-story buildings nearby.

The proposal drew opposition from Siesta Key residents in attendance, who characterized the project as too large and inappropriate for the area.

site expressed concern the hotel would exacerbate existing navigational challenges on Old Stickney Point Road and Peacock Road.

A majority of the Planning Commission determined the special exception applications merited approval, pending County Commission approval of a separate amendment to the unified development code that would eliminate density limits on hotel projects. The Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend denial of a code amendment associated with the Old Stickney Point hotel project that would have increased the maximum density for hotels by adjusting the calculations the county currently uses.

In August, the Planning Commission recommended approval of applications associated with an eight-story, 170-room hotel plan in Siesta Key Village.

Two additional hotel plans are awaiting county consideration.

Residents in the nearby Marina del Sol condominium have expressed concern about the effects of a hotel in the area, but representatives for the developer have argued the size of the residential building could justify the county’s approval of a height increase for the proposed project.

Public, officials await orchestra clarity Orchestra supporters and park preservationists are seeking a resolution on the organization’s long-standing pursuit of land in Payne Park for a new venue.

Kelly Franklin is tired, disappointed and preparing for a fight she doesn’t want.

Since 2019, Franklin has led a coalition called Preserve Payne Park, formed in response to the Sarasota Orchestra’s proposal to use a 7-acre portion of the downtown-adjacent park for a new performance hall. She thought she and like-minded residents had won an early victory: Three months after the orchestra made its request to the city, the city said no.

It wasn’t over, though. In one form or another, the idea of putting the orchestra in Payne Park kept resurfacing. As the orchestra focused its search for a new venue outside city limits, some residents and officials advanced Payne Park as the best option for retaining the institution. Eventually, that notion rose to the highest level: In March, the commission voted to include Payne Park as it lobbies the orchestra to stay.

At first, Franklin saw potential for a compromise. Park preservationists would not consider the 7-acre plan the orchestra presented in 2019, and multiple commissioners expressed a similar sentiment. Still, she thought something on a smaller footprint

in or around Payne Park could work — maybe even without using any actual green space. She was encouraged when advocates for retaining the orchestra downtown said the same thing.

As a community conversation about the future of the orchestra continued, one party appeared to be intractable: the orchestra. The organization held firm, stating it needed 7 acres for a music hall and that Payne Park was the only viable site in the city. Additionally, it sought assurances from the city that there would be no legal issues associated with the land, despite the city attorney stating there was no way to proactively address a question associated with the deed to Payne Park.

Two and a half years after the orchestra’s initial request, Franklin said she’s exhausted by a proposition that has refused to resolve itself. Despite offers from the city to consider alternate sites or alternate configurations in Payne Park, the orchestra has offered limited insight into how it arrived at its position — or when it might decide to move on from its consideration of its preferred site.

“This has become some sort of strange, personal ‘Don Quixote’ quest,” Franklin said about the orchestra’s approach. “And that’s fine, but you’ve got to stop torturing the city with this.”

On Sept. 1, Franklin emailed Preserve Payne Park members, encouraging recipients to contact orchestra President and CEO Joe McKenna to either reduce the scope of its request, consider alternative sites within the city or announce that it will be moving elsewhere.

The email was a response to an opinion piece in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune from City Commissioner Liz Alpert, the lone elected official to support the orchestra’s initial proposal in 2019. Alpert has expressed concern about the prospect of losing the orchestra, which has been in the city for more than 70 years, to another location in Sarasota County. For Alpert, the prospect of losing land in Payne Park was a less significant concern — especially when the city would regain public open space if the orchestra moved out of its bayfront home.

She encouraged the public to contact the orchestra and commissioners with their support for accommodating the organization’s needs.

“We’re running out of time,” Alpert said in March.

Although Alpert’s column drew supportive emails from some residents, Franklin argued the orchestra is the party that’s running out the clock. Earlier this year, McKenna said he hoped the

orchestra would settle on a site by mid-2021. In subsequent interviews, he said the orchestra would share information with the public as it deemed appropriate.

McKenna was not available for an interview.

If the orchestra doesn’t cede some ground, Franklin said it would reignite a battle that packed the commission chambers in 2019 — and possibly lead to a lengthy legal fight.

She said people who support the orchestra share her displeasure with how the organization has handled its pursuit of a new venue. In a Sept. 1 email to city officials, Mark Kauffman — a strong advocate for retaining the orchestra — suggested the orchestra should show greater flexibility and spoke positively

about Preserve Payne Park’s approach to the topic.

“That organization has acted with maturity, good will, accommodation and civic patriotism,” Kauffman wrote. “So should the orchestra.”

Also on Sept. 1, Commissioner Erik Arroyo said in an email to Franklin he was also interested in getting some resolution. “I’m in favor of them giving us a definitive answer as to whether they’re moving or staying,” Arroyo wrote.

Franklin said she still thinks any tension between park preservationists and orchestra supporters could be remedied if the orchestra showed less rigidity.

“I hope this ends one way or another soon,” Franklin said. “I hope it ends happily ever after, which it could if we get past egos.”

Beyond the glamour and the desire to return to something socially normal, the events have an important function: supplying a sizable monetary boost to nonprofits’ budgets and outwardfacing services.

As opposed to last season — where groups largely pivoted to virtual formats or delayed to the 2021 season — the closest thing to a uniting consensus on how to proceed is to monitor local posi-

tivity rates and follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventino.

And to stay nimble.

“We’re set to go. People have already responded (to attend the awards dinner),” Lipton said. “(We’re) staying informed, staying hopeful and staying flexible.

If things change a month before the event or 10 days before the event, we’re going to remain flexible and maintain the safety of our community.”

Lipton has been at work with staff planning the Civic Achievement Award Dinner for Nov. 18 at Michael’s On East.

Brian Lipton, the director of AJC West Coast Florida, has been looking forward to his organization’s first in-person philanthropic event since the pandemic started, planned now for midNovember.

Early in 2021, putting on the Civic Achievement Awards dinner looked to be a sure bet. COVID-19 cases were dropping, vaccine demand was high, and confidence was building that the end of the pandemic was approaching.

But the emergence of the delta variant this summer has put that all into question, prompting event organizers in some cases to plan for the unexpected or to simply cancel events in the near future.

“Vaccinations started in January, and it’s September,” Lipton said. “Who would have thought we’d still be so concerned about hospitalization rates?”

Lipton is not alone navigating with little in the way of forward visibility while attempting to return to a normal fundraising season.

“It’s like navigating a ship where the sea keeps changing,” Lipton said. “You’ll find out there’s a new booster shot being offered, and everyone gets excited. But then

“Rosé is relatively small event for us,” Wilson said. “It’s a fundraiser, certainly, but not our marquee event. It made sense for us, instead to try to reenvision it or move it around the calendar, to just cancel it,” Wilson said.

The organization has a larger fall luncheon typically held in November, but Wilson said they are unsure if they will be able to host it in person.

Girls Inc. of Sarasota, which helps local girls ages 5-18 through social and educational programs, had its celebration dinner planned Sept. 22 but recently canceled as well.

Jennifer Rominiecki, the CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, has time before deciding on what to do for her group’s signature Orchid Ball in February 2022.

She has reasons to be confident about managing the conditions, between the event being held in an outdoor setting and the organization having already put on an adapted fundraiser last year.

She said it’s early to be deciding on what the spring event structure will be. Where in the past events had seating arrangements and logistics figured out even a year in advance, Rominiecki now says she and staff have to be finalize details on a shorter time frame.

“In this environment, everyone has to be nimble and flexible and ready to make adjustments,” Rominiecki said.

City Commission switches to daytime meetings Eight months after moving commission meetings to the evenings, the board decided to make another schedule change.

In January, a majority of the City Commission expressed frustration with board meetings that began in the afternoon and sometimes ran late into the night.

The commission voted 4-1 to adopt a 6 p.m. start time and up to four meetings a month, rather than two.

On Tuesday, for the second time this year, a majority of the board said it was unsatisfied with the commission’s meeting schedule. In another 4-1 vote, the commission voted to change the start time for meetings again.

Once the change is finalized, the board will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month.

Until that change is finalized, commission meetings will run from 6-10 p.m. on the first and third Monday and Tuesday of the month. Mayor Hagen Brody was a vocal advocate for that change, arguing that evening meetings allowed for increased in-person participation.

Commissioner Liz Alpert asked the commission to reconsider the schedule. Alpert said holding two

back-to-back night meetings was difficult for city staff, some commissioners and members of the public. She shared information on meeting times for other nearby local governments.

“If all of these municipalities and counties can start their meetings at 9 a.m., and it works for the general public, which I believe it does, there’s no reason we can’t do that,” Alpert said.

Earlier this year, the city estimated evening meetings would create $113,146 in additional annual expenses for staff time.

Commissioners Erik Arroyo and Kyle Battie were supportive of the 9 a.m. start time, but Brody and Commissioner Jen AhearnKoch were concerned a daytime schedule would create an obstacle to public participation.

Ahearn-Koch advocated for a return to the hybrid afternoonevening schedule in place prior to January, under which the commission started an afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. and an evening session at 6 p.m.

Alpert said members of the public can share their feedback with commissioners without attending meetings in person, noting the city allows remote video participation and incorporates electronic comments into the public record. The commission must finalize its new schedule at a future meeting. The board agreed to reevaluate the schedule in six months.

An untold story of 9/11 In the 43-year life of the Longboat Observer, two staffers’ involvement in Longboat Key’s connection to that horrible tragedy will forever tie them and the newspaper to history.

wo days after the twin towers collapsed, with smoke still sending signals of horror and dust choking all of Manhattan, Patty Colby, the receptionist at the Longboat Observer, called thenExecutive Editor Lisa Walsh, who was in her second-floor office.

It was early afternoon. Stationed at the front of the office on Gulf of Mexico Drive, Colby served as our greeter and frontline gatekeeper.

“There are two men here to see you,” Colby relayed to Walsh.

“They say they’re with the Secret Service.”

Walsh remembers a hot flash rushing through her body.

Two Secret Service agents at the Longboat Observer, the paper whose police blotter is full of high crimes, such as snakes in mailboxes and neighbors’ dogs barking too loud?

But like all of us, when we think back to that day 20 years ago, Lisa Walsh recalls the surreal scene — and two days after that — like they happened yesterday.

What occurred next can be called the most history-making story in the life of the Longboat Observer. As the U.S. and world swirled in agony over the most heinous terrorist attack in modern history, two people at this little community newspaper on this tiny barrier island off the coast of Florida found themselves as key players in the Secret Service’s hunt for clues.

It has to be one of the more fascinating news stories in the 43-year life of the Longboat Observer. But here’s the funny, odd part: Not much of it ever made it into print. Until now.

The two blue-suited agents towered over Walsh, a petite, 5-foot-2, with her signature strand of pearls around her neck.

She looked up at them, shaking inside with fear.

“May we speak to you in private?” one asked.

Walsh walked the hallway, escorting them to her office. She told herself: “I shouldn’t be so scared. We didn’t do anything.”

Her hands trembled.

“How can I help you?” she asked as they took seats in her office.

“Where did you get the stories in your paper about the van of Middle Eastern men and the terrorists living in the trailer park?” one of the agents asked.

He was inquiring about City Editor Shay Sullivan’s news story recounting a conversation he had heard among Longboat Key firefighters. Former Fire Marshal Carroll Mooneyhan told his colleagues about a van full of Middle Eastern-looking men pulling up to the Colony’s security gate early that morning and posing to be a news crew scheduled to interview President George W. Bush.

Mooneyhan said the men were denied access, but days after the story appeared in the Observer, it mushroomed into talk about whether this alleged van and group of men actually were trying to assassinate Bush.

That was just one of the bizarre events that occurred that day and leading up to the attacks. Everyone on Longboat and in Greater Sarasota became stunned to learn in time about the many pieces of this story that involved Longboat Key, Sarasota and Venice.

Mastermind Mohammed Atta and his miserable band of terrorists had taken flying lessons at the Venice Municipal Airport.

Some of them lived awhile in Palmer Ranch, and some, Sullivan also learned, lived in one of the trailer parks on Longboat Key. There was more.

Sullivan later learned from a server at the Longboat Key Holiday Inn that Atta and his cronies had dined there multiple times.

The young woman stood across the bar from them. “I knew she was telling the truth,” Walsh says now. “Her hands were shaking.” She told them she saw Atta’s photo on TV after the attacks and instantly recognized that he was the man she waited on.

How could this be — little, idyllic Longboat Key at the center of this international catastrophe? And on top of that, the Longboat Observer’s executive editor and city editor becoming momentary key figures in this unfolding mystery?

Back in Walsh’s office, the Secret Service agents didn’t engage in any happy, small talk.

“They were serious,” Walsh says. In response to their question about where the Observer obtained its information on the van and trailer park, a nervous Walsh replied: “We’re reporters. That’s what we do.”

There was a tense moment of silence. And then one of the agents cracked a slight smile

and lightly slapped his knee, as if to say, “Duh, we should have thought of that.”

But light moment didn’t last.

“In so many words,” Walsh remembers, “they asked us not to write anymore stories.”

Walsh’s reply? “I made no promises. I said, ‘If Shay finds out anything more, that’s what we do.”

They thanked her for her time.

Walsh escorted them down the stairs to the front door.

Two days later, they were back.

This time, they handed her a piece of paper with a phone number — a 202-Washington, D.C., area code — and asked her to call it between 8-9 p.m.

“Who is this?” Walsh asked.

They declined to say. “Call the number. They will tell you whether the information about Carroll Mooneyhan is accurate.”

For the rest of the day, Walsh felt a knot in her stomach. That night, she made the call. A man answered. “This is Lisa Walsh from the Longboat Observer.

To whom am I speaking?” she asked.

He would not say. All he said was: “The information about Carroll Mooneyhan is not true.”

Walsh: “Would you please repeat that?”

“The information about Carroll Mooneyhan is not true.”

Walsh: “Thank you.” She hung up. That was it.

Walsh remembers thinking moments afterward. “I believe Shay. That guy lied to me.”

Today, Walsh says that was the most exciting experience in her journalistic career. “I was scared to death.”

Looking back, this will be part of the rich lore of the Longboat Observer. How this little, blonde editor and a curious, attentive young reporter played big roles in the chapter of 9/11 that started on Longboat Key. We will never forget.

Enough is enough on Siesta Key

Blasé Café’s matriarch dies at age 65

The paradox is deafening. On one hand, you have the voters, who voted into office the County Commission, which appointed the Planning Commission.

Instead of holding town halls and far more logical meetings of Siesta Key residents, where their voices can be heard, county staff simply moves ahead. I refer to the manner in which planned hotels on Siesta Key are being put through the process.

Also, the Stickney Point Road median east of the south bridge is being torn up and replaced by a thin, dangerous divider. This is being done to meet the demands of the Siesta Promenade project.

No one in county government appears to be concerned in the least about the incredible impact of cars, of people this project alone, which also includes a 130room hotel, will have on both the mainland access to Siesta Key and the Key itself.

Now developers want to build resorts that once again require exceptions and exemptions.

Why? Siesta Key has seen a construction boom that includes commercial businesses almost on top of each other.

Enough is enough. The roads, the sidewalks, the bike paths are not enough to accommodate any more influx.

o one will dispute the expression “She sure knew how to throw a party” in describing Cynthia Breslin, the founder and owner of Siesta Key’s Blasé Café. Energizing a room was her forte, as was making each person who came into her life feel special.

“She was one epitome of the words care and giver,” said business partner Kevin Skiest, who worked with Breslin for five years to help reorganize and reenergize the business.

Breslin died Aug. 23 at the age of 65, about a year after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

As a patron, Skiest met Breslin at her restaurant and forged a close friendship with the entrepreneur, whose Ocean Avenue venue opened 25 years ago on Siesta Key and expanded from one table to seating for 100.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when all restaurants closed, Breslin was undergoing aggressive cancer treatment and keeping a low profile.

Skiest too suffered severe health issues after he was diagnosed in April with COVID-19 and was hospitalized for three weeks at

“A really bad time for all of us,” Skiest said, adding that nothing compares to the death of his friend, who was surrounded by Skiest, her three sisters and her daughter. “Her passing is a true tragedy.”

The impact Breslin had on people can be seen by the outpouring of emotion from family and others who knew her.

“I shared my mom with the world,” said Breslin’s 25 year old daughter, Olivia Cole. “Growing up, our house was an open house to anyone who was in need, including wayward teens, the near homeless and anyone else who needed mothering and mentoring, meals and a place to stay.”

Cole said her mom “unofficially” fostered many kids who went on to be successful and grounded.

Michelle McVey, one of Breslin’s three sisters, said her sister married twice, “actually three times since she married her first husband twice,” and began to wait tables and bartend at wellknown eateries around Sarasota after moving here from South Carolina.

Blasé was Breslin’s passion, and she realized her dream when she rented a former 10-unit motel converted for restaurant use. The restaurant flourished, and Breslin and a partner opened Pi 3.14, a pizza and craft beer restaurant next door in 2016.

In an email, Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ann Frescura wrote, “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Cynthia Breslin, a long-time Siesta Key local business owner and chamber member.

“The Blasé Café & Martini Bar reflects her passion and personality and continues to be a fixture in Siesta Key Village and a popular hot spot with locals and tourists alike. We send our sincere condolences to her many friends and family.”

A celebration of Breslin’s life will take place at 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 at The Devyn, 7113 S. Tamiami Trail. The celebration will continue from 8 p.m. to midnight on both Friday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Sept. 18 at Blasé Café.

“We’re throwing one last party in her honor,” Skiest said. “Nothing will change at Blasé or Pi 3.14.

Only Cindy won’t be seen dancing on the deck, except in spirit.”

Breslin is survived by her daughter, Olivia; son, Wesley; three sisters, Michelle, Valerie and Becky; and three half siblings, Karon, Jimmy and Tami.

BOTTLE UP AND EXPLODE! 8:02 p.m.— 0 block of South Tuttle Avenue Property damage: An employee at a convenience store was ringing up customers when he saw a man walk in. The employee recognized the man from a previous incident in which he entered the store completely naked and stole several items. The employee told the man he was not allowed in the store, and the man cursed at the employee before leaving.

Later, another customer told the employee that the man had smashed open a case of bottled water and thrown the bottles at cars in the parking lot. Officers responded to the scene and saw two cases of water broken outside the store. Officers estimated the damage at $10. Officers were unable to locate the man in the area.

EXTENDED STAY 2:54 p.m. — 900 block of University Parkway Trespass: An employee at a hotel said he went to a room and found a guest still inside, even though it was past her checkout time.

The employee said he asked the guest to leave several times, but she refused. An officer went to the room and told the guest that staff wanted her to leave, at which point the guest said she would pay for another night. The employee said he was past that point and that she was no longer welcome at the hotel. The guest gathered her items and left.

When she returned, she discovered her dog had gotten loose. Moments later, a man approached her and began yelling at her. The man was upset because the loose dog started to chase his young daughter. The customer contacted the police, who spoke to the man. He said he was concerned about his daughter’s safety but denied harassing the customer.

A musician performing at the bar said the man’s reaction seemed reasonable. An officer determined no crime was committed, and the customer and the man agreed to remain separated.

A nearly 3-acre property on the north end of Casey Key is the most recent luxury sale in a neighborhood known for some of the region’s highest-priced real estate deals.

The estate at 1588 N. Casey Key Road, which includes a main house and a guest house on 2.67 Gulf-front acres, sold for $9.25 million by Raymond and Jeanne Conrad to 1588 North Casey Key LLC, based in St. Petersburg.

The sale was handled by Roger Pettingell, the top-producing affiliated agent with Coldwell

Banker Realty in Florida who works from the company’s Longboat Key office. The buyer was represented by Olga Smith of Imperial Property Group LLC. The main house includes four bedrooms, four full baths and two half baths, and about 6,300 square feet of living space. The adjoining 1,400-square-foot guest house includes a pair of bedroom suites.

Between the two is a saltwater swimming pool and raised spa.

The property is on the northernmost end of Casey Key, across Little Sarasota Bay from Marie Selby Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point.

What a difference 12 months — and a full offseason — can make.

Last season, the Cardinal Mooney High football team struggled to score in Coach Jared Clark’s first season.

The Cougars went 2-7 and averaged 16.5 points a game, including their 52-0 playoff loss to Lakeland Christian. This year, through two games, the Cougars are averaging 35.5 points a game, having beaten Booker High 36-0 and Lakewood Ranch High 35-30.

They’re doing it with largely the same group of players, including senior quarterback Tayven Clark, Jared Clark’s nephew, who has seen his numbers skyrocket in 2021. Through two games, Tayven Clark has completed 25 of 30 passes for 325 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Clark has also run 20 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

“We’re an explosive offense, and we know it,” Tayven Clark said.

Clark isn’t doing this by himself. He gets to throw the ball to weapons including senior wide receiver Cooper Flerlage, who changed the outcome of the Lake-

wood Ranch game with a 38-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Flerlage took a routine screen pass to the right side of the field and weaved his way to the left sideline, where he turned up the field before any Mustangs could catch him.

Freshman wide receiver Ryan Matulevich has also impressed coaches this offseason and leads the team with eight catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

When the Cougars get tired of throwing, they hand the ball to sophomore Carson Beach, who has 25 carries for 132 yards and three touchdowns. Basically, whatever Mooney wants to do on offense, it has done successfully. Against Lakewood Ranch, the Cougars did it without Jared Clark, who was absent from the sidelines for health reasons.

It didn’t matter; the Cougars are confident they can score on anyone at any time. With a full offseason in place, the Cougars had a chance to install more of their offense and get more comfortable within it.

“We have been repetitious in practice,” Tayven Clark said.

“We’ve been consistent in our work. We get after it. We make sure that we perfect everything we do. That’s helped us so far.

“We’re going to do our thing. It doesn’t matter who we’re going to get (on the field). We’re going to run our offense, and we’re going to do it well.”

That offense has included lots of plays from pistol formations, similar to the shotgun except the quarterback, Clark, stands closer to the center, allowing offensive weapons to stand either behind him or to the side of him, or both.

The look gives Mooney plenty of options, which seemed to throw off the Mustangs defense last week, especially on running plays.

The Cougars hit Lakewood Ranch for 273 rushing yards, a feat that also acts as a hat tip to the team’s offensive line.

The Cougars will attempt to keep their offense rolling against North Port High (1-1) at 7:30 p.m.

Sept. 10 at North Port. The Bobcats lost 56-0 to Sarasota High last week. The schedule gets more difficult after that, with games against First Baptist Academy (2-0) and Carrollwood Day (2-0) on the horizon. But the Cougars believe they will be up to the task.

Conquering the college gridiron The 2021 college football just started, but there are plenty of names to watch.

F

all might not technically start until Sept. 22, but it spiritually arrived last weekend with the return of college football season.

It’s no secret that college football is my favorite sport. I love everything about it, from the quirky traditions of each school to the games themselves, even (or especially) the sloppy ones.

But I also love spotting Sarasotaarea players making a name for themselves on national TV. Every year, I write a primer of some of the area’s players to watch. 2021’s slate of stars might be the best yet.

Former Booker High wide receiver Talik Keaton got his junior season at Marshall off to a good start against Navy. Keaton, who has mostly been used as a kick and punt returner in the past, had five catches for 100 yards in the Thundering Herd’s 49-7 win against the Midshipmen, including a 47-yard bomb.

If Marshall has decided to use Keaton more on offense this season — which would be a smart decision — he could be in for a

big season; Marshall quarterback Grant Wells is one of the better signal callers among Group of Five teams.

At Minnesota, former Cardinal Mooney High running back Bryce Williams scored a goalline touchdown in the team’s road loss to Ohio State. After a 2018 season where Williams ran for 502 yards on 117 carries, the redshirt junior has never received a chance to duplicate those numbers, or even come close. The most carries he’s gotten in a season since is 17. That might change this year, though in an unfortunate circumstance: Minnesota’s star running back Mohamed Ibrahim suffered a season-ending leg injury against the Buckeyes. He’ll likely still be splitting carries with Trey Potts, but at least he’ll see the field and get to prove himself.

Sarasota High alumnus Brian Battie, a sophomore running back at South Florida, was named to the preseason 2021 All-American Athletic Conference Third Team by Pro Football Focus’ college division after a 2020 season where he ran for 336 yards on 42 attempts (7.6 yards per carry). He’s primed for a big sophomore season. That is, if USF decides to use him. In the team’s season opener against North Carolina State, Battie had just six combined offensive

touches for 28 yards (though he did have a 33-yard kick return).

If I were the Bulls, I’d consider using one of their best playmakers more, but that’s just me. I’m sure they know what they’re doing, though; they only lost to NC State 45-0 after all.

Former Booker High defensive lineman Jacques Bristol, a sophomore at Central Michigan, had two solo tackles in the Chippewas’ 34-24 loss to my Missouri Tigers. The stats don’t tell the whole story here, though.

Bristol and his defensive line teammates were disruptive to the point where I started to get worried about Mizzou’s offensive line outlook the rest of the season. In retrospect, I think the Chippewas are just better than I thought they were. They’re fun to watch (when not giving your team a scare).

Of course, you can also watch a few alumni on Sundays.

Former Booker High running back Marlon Mack is still with the Indianapolis Colts, third on the depth chart fighting for carries with Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, and former Riverview High defensive back Jamar Johnson is now a rookie with the Denver Broncos after a stellar college career at Indiana. Johnson had seven tackles and two passes defended in two preseason games. Former Booker

Zaun was named to the 14U team at the Perfect Game Select Festival, held Sept. 4 and 5 in Fort Myers. The top 44 14U players in the country, per Perfect Game’s rankings, were invited to play in the game.

When did you start playing baseball?

My dad, (Ed), got me into it when I was 3 years old. He coached my Little League teams for a while. I just fell in love with it right away.

What is your best skill?

I love hitting. That’s always been my favorite thing to do, stepping into the box and competing with the pitcher. I try to have fun up there and swing away.

What is your favorite memory?

I went to Cooperstown, New York, for a tournament in the summer of 2019. I was playing with the Tampa Hurricanes then. (Zaun plays for Canes National.) You stay in a dorm with your team, and you get team pins to trade with other teams. The interaction with all the other teams made it the best. My team made it to the championship game, which was also cool.

huy Nguyen does a little bit of everything.

Whether it’s working as bar manager at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre, concessions manager at Ed Smith Stadium or Vietnamese interpreter for the courts, Nguyen tries to keep things varied.

Still, it’s often not enough.

Nguyen,44, said that about 10

years ago, she questioned who she was and what she had accomplished.

“If everything I’ve been doing has led me to this, why don’t I do something different?” she said.

It was an existential problem with no easy solution. But Nguyen figured victory might be found in simply making the effort.

So every week, Nguyen would go out and try something new.

A new hobby, a new travel destination or even a new food. She

wasn’t picky choosing from an entire world of possibilities.

Nguyen came up with a name for her experiment: “The Life of Thuy.”

Almost nine years later, Nguyen has continued her “Life of Thuy” project and adapted it into a YouTube show with a new release each week.

Viewers have watched Nguyen eat silkworms, audition for a play and even explore Alaskan landscapes.

It’s a long list of accomplishments, and Nguyen knows she has plenty more to come. Most importantly, she thinks she’ll be doing so as a stronger person. “(The Life of Thuy) has made me realize, ‘Wow, I can do this,’” Nguyen said.

Nguyen’s journey had more humble origins. Her first new thing was when she and her friend decided to go on a zip lining vacation in Central Florida for her birthday.

Since then, she’s kept a journal of her exploits. In time, that turned into a sprawling spreadsheet of the past and the planned.

Even so, Nguyen is first to admit that she sometimes goes with the flow and picks an idea as it comes to her.

The YouTube portion of “The Life of Thuy” started in 2015.

After some encouragement from family, Nguyen adapted her personal project to something that was viewed by hundreds of people. It has been her hope that her videos nudge people to try out new things like she has.

“Maybe (my videos) can help someone say, ‘You know what, if that girl can do it, I can do it too, or I can do it better,’” Nguyen said.

Some of her challenges have been simple enough while others have been physically and mentally demanding. Nguyen said she has had a deep fear of drowning her entire life and took to conquering that fear by learning to scuba.

“I was more nervous (to learn to scuba) than I was skydiving,” she said “The ocean is so vast. What if something happens to your equipment? … Now it’s something that’s so peaceful for me that I look forward to doing.”

Many of Nguyen’s exploits have been tangible with visible results, but she said one of her first new things is the one that has affected her most.

SUCCESSES AND . . .

On boxing: “I thought it was going to be macho and not my style. It turns out I love it. I go three times a week.”

On visiting Alaska: “In the past I might say: ‘I don’t know. It’s cold there.’ …

The sights we saw were awesome. We trekked on a glacier!”

On making tres leche cake: “It ended up being a big pile of goop.”

She realized at one point that while she loved her parents and while she knew they loved her, because of their culture, she had never said so.

It was one of the more daunting challenges, but Nguyen went ahead on Thanksgiving leaving her family written letters that said how much she cared about them and her favorite memory of them.

“Some family thought I was dying,” Nguyen said, laughing.

“People pulled me aside various times during the weekend asking, ‘Are you OK?’” It has paid off in the years since.

Some family have opened up with her, and some haven’t yet, but Nguyen is also just glad she made that jump. She feels like a different, more content person. “‘The Life of Thuy’ has taught me the power of gratitude,” Nguyen said. “It helps me see how beautiful life is. There are so many experiences that we take for granted.”

ost theaters have been dark for more than a year, but there’s a place in Sarasota where the costumes shine, and they will all be for sale to the public “off the rack” at thrift show prices Sept. 17 and 18.

Asolo Repertory Theatre, entering its 63rd season in Sarasota, is opening its costume vault at the Koski Production Center on Tallevast Road for the twoday sale.

Hundreds of buyers are expected to browse the 45,000-squarefoot warehouse. More than 2,000 professionally created costumes will be on sale, ranging from period costumes including medieval, Renaissance, 1930s and 1940s to 21st century garments.

and McKinley launched a shared multimedia studio near Gulf Gate in early 2019. NESmaker Studios was its official name. But they always called it “the treehouse.”

“That’s what it was to us,” McKinley said. “Like two big kids, Joe and I created our own tree fort.

It’s the place we’d go to play — and maybe invite our friends.”

“Play,” as in create comic books, podcasts and other original art.

But it wasn’t all play and no work at the treehouse. Commercial gigs kept rolling in, and software sales never slowed down.

It was a very good year in 2019.

When 2020 dawned, the future looked bright. It was a perfect time to invite their creative friends to the treehouse.

That’s when their big plan crystallized.

“We wanted to be a lightning rod for area talents and draw all that energy here,” Granato said.

“Creatives of all descriptions would get together, share ideas and bounce off each other.”

They had already packed the place with tech toys — including a recording studio, a three-camera sound stage and a multimedia classroom.

By March 2020, the beautiful toys were waiting. Their plan was coming true.

“The rocket was on the launchpad,” McKinley said. “The countdown had started.”

“Yes, it had,” Granato said.

“Then — literally two weeks later — the lockdown took hold.”

No launch. The pandemic stretched on. The treehouse stayed closed to visiting friends.

No friends tried to visit. People stayed away in droves.

But McKinley and Granato still had plenty to do.

“The pandemic turned our

treehouse into the fortress of solitude,” McKinley said. “People left us alone, and we got a lot of work done.”

COVID-19 or not, their treehouse was still a multimedia dynamo. They worked, they earned, and they still had fun.

Business was still good — but going nowhere.

“Our studio was still an epic place to create,” McKinley said.

“As a purely business proposition, it didn’t work.”

The pandemic subtracted their artful ambitions from the treehouse equation. The business side was all that remained.

They had reached the same conclusion. And made the same decision.

They quit.

However, both landed on their feet. Toronto is Austin and Sherrie McKinley’s new home. He’s now sharpening his multimedia skills in a graduate program at Centennial College. The Granato family moved to Providence, Rhode Island. Joe Granato now makes a living doing product development for M-Audio.

“No regrets about that decision,” Granato said. “But plenty of regrets about pulling the plug on our dream. We had a really great studio concept. And we were so close to making it happen. The success of our NES project made it possible. Then COVID made it impossible. We just couldn’t do it.”

McKinley feels the same way.

“I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” he said. “The treehouse was exactly the right idea at exactly the wrong time. If I have to, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to re-create it. I was right where I wanted to be, and I’ll get back there if I can.”

Dr. Herbert Silverstein, founder of Sarasota-based Ear Research Foundation, realized early in the COVID-19 pandemic that masks and lip reading didn’t mix.

“A lot of people don’t realize they use lips to hear others,” Silverstein said of hearing-impaired people. “But when we all had to start wearing masks, it became obvious a lot of people were having trouble.”

So late in 2020, the Ear Research Foundation found a solution. The organization supplied $25 donors with a self-designed mask featuring a transparent panel to facilitate communication. Additionally, the masks’ connecting points to the ears are adjustable, making them easier to use and more comfortable for people with hearing aids. The devices often tangled with the elastic loops of conventional masks, sometimes falling off.

“We’d hear complaints all the time,” he said. “In a practice like ours with patients with hearing loss, it was very common to hear people would lose their (hear-

ing) aids and have to go searching around. It seemed like an expensive problem.”

The foundation’s masks were introduced last fall, re-released in January with a few modifications, then were updated again this summer when COVID-19’s delta variant emerged.

Silverstein has noted a shift in the mood of patients who come into the Ear Research Foundation on Floyd Street near Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He said the pandemic has been hard on many of them but has noticed an uptick in attitudes and ability to communicate.

“The patients in the office seem happy when they get them, and they seem to want more,” Silverstein said.

The communicator masks are designed for people to read lips.
