S’macks, Sarasota Magazine on the move downtown

A

lthough the project team behind the building at 1500 State St. just broke ground on the development Monday, the group has already shared a preliminary list of the tenants slated to move into the downtown property.

Those tenants are: S’macks, a fast-casual burger restaurant, Sarasota Magazine, a local lifestyle publication, Re/Max Platinum Realty and Optional Art Fine Jewelry.

The mixed-use project will also include 20 luxury condo-

minium units, 10 of which have already sold. The remaining units, between 734 and 1,013 square feet, are priced from $386,000 to $505,000.

Plans call for a six-story building at State Street and Lemon Avenue, next to the State Street parking garage, and an adjoining two-story building along Lemon Avenue next to Pineapple Park.

S’macks is moving into the ground-floor space at the corner of State and Lemon, and the condos will occupy the third through sixth floors of that building. Re/

Max and Optional Art will relocate from their current downtown storefronts into the ground floor of the two-story Lemon Avenue property.

Sarasota Magazine is moving into the second floor of both buildings, which will be connected by a walkover bridge.

Joe R. Hembree, president of Hembree and Associates, said there is still 5,000 square feet of commercial space in the development left to lease. Hembree is targeting a completion date of November 2017 for the project.

Downtown Sarasota real estate investor Jesse Biter has moved ahead with plans for a $15 million mixed-use project at Fruitville Road and Second Street next to his four-story HuB building.

Biter filed plans with the city late last month to develop 96 apartments, 6,270 square feet of office space and about 250 parking spaces, which would supplant an existing two-level garage adjacent to the HuB. He plans to deliver the 1697 Second St. project in 2018.

More than 1,400 new rental units are under construction or have recently come online downtown. Biter hopes to offer units at less expensive rates for the area, though he has not yet formulated exact amounts.

“I think there’s still a housing situation downtown, even with all the new units coming on,” he said. “And we’ll have some of the least expensive rates on the market. That’s our goal.”

Muscle memories For many, the Babe Weiller branch of the YMCA is more than a fitness center.

T

oday, young man, there is a need to feel down.

It’s 5:50 a.m. on a Monday, and word is out: The downtown YMCA will be closing.

On Sept. 12, three days after the Sarasota YMCA made the announcement about the Babe Weiller branch at 1991 Main St., less than half of the usual members are working out. The fitness center, which hosts daily classes in a bright, hardwood-floor dance room, has been in Main Plaza since 1998, and downtown for nine years before that.

Throughout the past two decades, the Babe Weiller branch has served as a networking portal for the area’s most powerful attorneys, a community gathering place for downtown residents and a launching pad for notable local fitness groups.

In a letter to members, YMCA interim CEO Steve Bourne said declining membership and rising rents will force the branch to close Oct. 7. In a press release, the organization announced it would consolidate staff and members into the Frank G. Berlin branch, located at 1075 S. Euclid Ave. Although the Berlin branch will offer new amenities and a larger space, regulars are sad about the circumstances.

“I really grieve its loss,” said Phyllis Barry, who has been going to the downtown Y since she moved to Sarasota 12 years ago.

“It is a bit of a tragedy.”

“Change is hard, especially when you’re old like me,” Sarasota County Public Defender Larry Eger said with a laugh.

Some longtime members, like local interior designer Mark Dalton, are downright angry.

“They’ve always treated us like the bastard child,” said Dalton, a 25-year downtown YMCA member who cited issues with older machinery and a recent air conditioning breakdown. “Over the years, they’ve pissed off big groups of people who keep on leaving and leaving and leaving.”

Won Huh, the former Mr. Korea-winning bodybuilder who has been training clients at Babe Weiller for nearly a quarter of a century, doesn’t want to talk about it at all.

But in all cases, members highlight the friendships they’ve made and a camaraderie that’s been a core element of the Babe Weiller branch. Here are a few of their reflections and thoughts about the branch closing.

an Bailey, a local land use attorney who has represented some of the area’s largest local institutions, attributes one of his daily passions to the downtown Y. For the past decade or so, Bailey has been part of a group of around a dozen people that walks from the Y over the Ringling Bridge to Bird Key and back downtown almost every week. The trek was part of a running route for Bailey as far back as the 1970s until he had two arthroscopic knee surgeries.

He’s still able to incorporate the walk into his fitness routine today.

The group includes real estate agents, a dentist, a Vietnam POW, a local journalist and a Haitian-born psychologist, along with a wide range of other professionals.

“I’m always inquiring about someone’s background, because it’s amazing some of the stories you’ll hear there,” Bailey said.

Bailey will follow Huh, with whom he regularly trains, to the Berlin branch after Oct. 7.

It will likely affect his walking group, which has benefited from a downtown location, and he may lose touch with some members who choose to go elsewhere.

“I’ll miss a lot of my friends,” Bailey said.

“It’s a real opportunity for socialization as well as exercise,” she said.

Barry has witnessed birthday celebrations for members in the cavernous hallway just outside of the gym’s entrance. She buys Christmas gifts for the instructor of her flexibility class.

Her husband, Roger, an emeritus professor of urban planning at the University of Cincinnati, questions why the Y wouldn’t want to maintain a presence downtown with more than 1,000 residential units planned in and around the downtown core.

“I moved to Sarasota 12 years ago to have a walkable downtown,” Phyllis Barry said. “This is what I wanted, and now it’ll be someplace else.”

hen Eger found out about the closure, he wasn’t surprised.

“It was just very sad — it is the end of an era,” Eger said. “My mother worked out there, I work out there, and my children worked out there — it’s multigenerational.”

As an attorney, he also recognized the importance of the Babe Weiller branch as a professional networking spot.

Art Jackman, a member of the lunchtime crew who is felony division chief for the Sarasota County State Attorney’s Office, recalls Eger introducing him to the gym in 1994. Since then, Jackman has been coming as part of a weight-training regimen.

“I’ve made some lifelong friends during that period,” Jackman said.

“Downtown professionals go to that gym specifically because of the location,” said Dalton, who owns the interior design firm Chic on the Cheap. “I try not to start my car in the morning if I don’t have to.”

Compared to the YMCA’s other locations, he said the absence of “loud musclemen” made the Babe Weiller branch ideal, as well.

“Even though there were big muscle guys there, its not like they’re shoving it down your throat,” he said.

Even though he didn’t like to converse too much while working out, Dalton valued the communal, almost intimate environment downtown.

“You can go in and you don’t have to talk to anybody, but it’s the kind of place that if you do want to talk to people, you can,” Dalton said. “And I think that’s going to be something that’s missing downtown.”

BUMPS IN THE ROAD As city staff works to alleviate traffic troubles, resident activist group STOP wants to change the way the city accounts for the impacts of new growth.

n Sept. 22, during one of the slowest periods of the year in Sarasota, Eileen Normile spoke to more than 150 residents concerned about traffic.

Those residents gathered at the Selby Library auditorium to hear a discussion on issues surrounding the Vue Sarasota Bay development at the first public meeting organized by the resident activist group STOP. One of the group’s focuses is traffic, a topic Normile believes isn’t getting enough attention from city leaders.

“I think when people come back this season, there’s going to be a lot of concern and a lot of complaining,” Normile said. “I think it should be the No. 1 issue, congestion.”

With STOP, she’s concentrating on how the city accounts for the impact of new developments on the road network.

The city requires a “transportation impact analysis,” which examines the number of trips a project is expected to generate on major roadways nearby. It’s used

to determine whether a developer has to pay concurrency fees, money used to restore the city’s roads up to an established level of service if the project would significantly degrade the quality of a street segment.

Normile wants the city to require a broader analysis of how new growth impacts the road network — one that’s simpler to understand and easier to use as a long-term planning tool.

CONCURRENCY EXCHANGE

Since 2011, those studies have determined that no new project in Sarasota has had a big enough impact to require the developer to pay concurrency fees.

In large part, that’s because the state changed its traffic concurrency regulations in 2011. Before, a developer building a large project near a failing road network would have to pay to restore the road to the city’s established level of service.

Now, even if a road is failing, the developer only has to pay for his or her “proportional fair share” of the traffic — in other words, the congestion the project would cre-

ate if the road were already at the established level of service.

“We can’t make them be held responsible for any existing deficits that are out there,” City Engineer Alex DavisShaw said.

The city is aware there are shortcomings in the current system. In 2014, the City Commission approved the creation of a multimodal impact fee on new development. Although builders haven’t had to pay concurrency fees, other roadway impact fees required a developer to pay for the number of trips that would be added to the road network.

Before, that money could only be used for road improvements, such as street widening. The multimodal impact fee allows the city to use those funds for other transportation improvements, such as bike lanes or bus shelters.

Even if a project triggers concurrency fees, DavisShaw said that’s not necessarily good for

the city. Those fees still must be spent on road improvements near the project area. Because the developer is only responsible for a proportional share, the city may have to pay for an expensive and unpopular road-widening effort.

“If that improvement was to widen Main Street and add a turn lane, would that be an improvement the community would like to see?” DavisShaw said.

The city is considering eliminating the traffic study requirement for a project unlikely to trigger concurrency fees based on the past 13 years of development.

Even the Vue, which includes 141 condo units and 255 hotel rooms, did not incur those fees.

Before waiving traffic studies, though, Normile thinks the city could adjust its formulas to generate more concurrency fees.

“With certain roads, you have to think outside the box and improve them, or we’ll just have

a parking lot,” Normile said.

Although the state mandates the proportionate share standard, the city can adjust some concurrency regulations itself. Normile wants to eliminate incentives put in place during slow periods.

“We don’t need the inducements anymore,” Normile said.

“We need to be fair.”

One go-to example is the Sarasota Bayside project, planned for the former Sarasota Quay property. The first phase will include up to 695 condo units, 12,000 square feet of office space and 70,000 square feet of retail.

The studies identify the number of new trips a new development will create, but the traffic previously generated at the same site is also taken into consideration — even if that previous property has been demolished.

The Sarasota Bayside study says the first phase will generate 502 trips during the evening peak

hours. Rounding up, the city’s math says the developer can write off 503 trips, 60% of the peakhour traffic the Quay generated before it was demolished in 2009.

“Their math actually shows the traffic will go down,” Normile said. “Those 500 estimated cars will be on the road on and near the Fruitville and U.S. 41 intersection.

You may notice them once the Quay is built.”

also concerned that traffic studies don’t translate into easy-tounderstand planning documents.

STOP wants to require developers to provide a traffic study that shows a project’s “realworld” impact. She believes more careful consideration of the city’s future infrastructure needs would benefit all parties.

“I’m sure a lot of these developers have multiple projects in the city,” Normile said. “Whatever benefits the city benefits them, so I think they’d also be happy to have better planning.”

Tim Litchet, the city’s director of neighborhood and development services, said city staff has focused more on individual projects since the loss of a dedicated planning department about a decade ago.

“Since the recession, we haven’t been staffed up to have a lot of long-term planning,” Litchet said.

The city’s 2016-17 budget includes plans to re-establish a planning department, one sign leaders are aware of the stress traffic is creating for residents.

Headed into another season, STOP is hoping to create an even greater sense of urgency among city leaders to take action.

“There isn’t any more time to study and think it over,” Normile said. “It’s time to actually do something.”

The former Sarasota High School building on U.S. 41 has been a source of mystery in the years since Ringling College of Art and Design announced plans to create a modern art museum in the building.

Ringling College signed a 99-year lease with the Sarasota County School District in 2007 and began preliminary construction on the Sarasota Museum of Art in 2015. The exterior of the building was re-mortared and the interior gutted. But then, construction stopped.

Since then, the building has remained empty, and few detailed plans have been articulated regarding the future of SMOA. That could be because the plans are still evolving. Ringling’s original lease only included the former high school and the land between the building and U.S. 41, but soon, the agreement will also include an additional building behind the school, referred to as “Building 42.”

According to Deputy Superintendent Scott Lempe, Building 42 is no longer included in the district’s long-term plans for the high school, and Ringling College expressed interest in expanding the future museum into the space.

Discussions between the two parties began last year and are still ongoing. The building is still

being used for instruction until the end of this school year.

The additional 15,000 square feet will allow Ringling to move some instructional space — originally intended to occupy twothirds of the old high school — out of the main building, allowing for more gallery space.

Ringling has also acquired the building north of the former high school previously owned

by Vision Works. In October and November, SMOA will host exhibitions in the Vision Works space, now dubbed as The Works.

The combination of the three buildings will also allow for an on-site restaurant and space for adult learning courses and museum storage.

“With this added kind of space, it allows us to look at it as an entire complex, like a campus,” Ringling President Larry Thompson said. “It can actually be master planned, and we can have it not just be one thing sticking in those grounds, but instead an entire holistic integrated whole.”

Although both parties expect to conclude negotiations soon, not all of the questions surrounding the museum have been cleared up. Thompson said the project is in its final design stages, and it is still unclear when construction will begin.

“We’re still talking about certain areas and issues that have to change,” Thompson said. “But it should be fairly soon.”

WHAT LEADERSHIP CAN DO Greater Sarasota-Manatee shares similarities with Colorado Springs. Both are growth markets with attractive amenities. But there’s one huge difference: leadership.

away from home is always an enlightening experience. It’s good to see how others live.

Here in Colorado Springs and its surrounding county of El Paso, there are similarities with Greater Sarasota.

Total county population is 660,000 compared with 710,000 in SarasotaManatee. Tourism is big here. Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods (the most visited city park in the nation), Cheyenne Mountain and the five-star Broadmoor Resort are big economic engines. Like Sarasota, there is no major university, but there are thriving colleges — the private Colorado College, the University of ColoradoColorado Springs and, of course, the U.S. Air Force Academy.

One major difference: Colorado Springs is a big military town. It has the Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Shriever Air Force Base, the Army’s Fort Carson and NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command).

With its proximity to the mountains — a bike or short car ride away — and temperate weather, population growth is strong. Colorado Springs rose from the 42nd to 40th most populous city (440,000 population). This growth has created one of healthiest residential real estate and job-growth markets in the country. Median home prices have risen 6.5% so far this year, and the region has added 8,826 new jobs.

(That compares to 13% increases in median home prices in SarasotaManatee and 7,100 new jobs.)

When Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers delivered his annual State of the City address Sept. 8,

he started out by saying: “I am very pleased to report that in the last 12 months, our city has moved forward significantly on the continuum from good to great.”

In addition to the above growth statistics, Suthers went on to cite a list of city improvements: “221 miles of repaved lanes, 177,082 tons of asphalt poured, 93,015 lineal feet of curb and gutter replaced and 240 pedestrian ramps repaired or replaced; “… eight of 71 proposed stormwater projects are underway to address a longstanding and crushing need for better flood control.”

And in the private sector, Suthers reported: n 500 hotel rooms under construction; n A 5% increase in airline passengers at the airport; n $1 billion in health care investments at two hospitals and construction of a new children’s hospital; n “The U.S. Olympic Museum and Hall of Fame will soon join the U.S. Olympic Committee, the Olympic Training Center and 23 national governing bodies to bolster our community’s status as Olympic City USA and hub of the country’s Olympic pride.”

And he added: “The cybersecurity industry is ablaze, putting the community on a fast track to becoming the country’s cybersecurity capital.”

Perhaps you see where this is going.

In fact, when you see the Colorado Springs metro area firsthand, one of the obvious differences between it and Sarasota is that the citizens of Colorado Springs and its government embrace population and economic growth — far more than Greater Sarasota-Manatee.

We couldn’t help but notice this, too: The region’s daily newspaper is a staunch supporter of this growth.

In fact, you probably could say the same about the residents of Colorado Springs in general. And here’s the proof: A day after Mayor Suthers delivered his State of the City address, the lead editorial in the Colorado Springs Gazette praised Suthers for “restoring a collaborative relationship between the mayor and the City Council; investing in public assets, such as roads and stormwater infrastructure; and

allowing the economy to create jobs.”

The Gazette said: “He gets an ‘A’ report card for meeting his main goals in short order and deserves credit for a cultural and economic renaissance Colorado Springs has long been capable of.”

But the following paragraph was the one that resonated most: “Voters also deserve great credit, for choosing in November 2010 to scrap the old city manager form of governance and create a separate executive branch run by a popularly elected mayor. It was a move that favors local leadership. It facilitated difficult reforms enacted by former Mayor Steve Bach and today’s nationally recognized leadership of Suthers.

Without an elected executive, we might not be on this upward trajectory … “[The] State of the City address was a factual, detailed, substantive description of a community emerging as a world-class destination for new residents, businesses and tourists. We see no limits to how far this may go.”

When you experience Colorado Springs firsthand, you see that economic growth and geographic, environmental beauty can indeed coexist. But you also see an essential key ingredient to that is having a strong elected leader who sets the tone and executes.

Bad for business

It’s confusing. Retail merchants often say, “We need more people exposed to our stores.” And then they’ll say, “Big crowds and parades are bad for business.”

And so it goes. Sarasota runs off another event that’s intended to draw people downtown and do good for local charities.

The list grows: The Chalk Festival, Suncoast Boat Parade … now Thunder by the Bay. One day, the Main Street merchants may finally realize Gil Waters is right: Close off Main and let it become a plaza of people and festivals, a throbbing heartbeat of energy and activity.

Dreams can come true.

FLORIDA’S FUTURE? GET YOUR GAS, GRASS Here is one obvious difference between Greater Sarasota and Colorado Springs: Medical marijuana dispensaries are growing like weeds.

One of the new retail chains in Colorado Springs is Native Roots, a medical marijuana dispensary that touts itself as a place for “Gas + Grass.”

Thanks to the Colorado Legislature, cities have the choice of how they want to regulate marijuana.

Colorado Springs chose not to allow recreational marijuana. Medical marijuana, however, is legal.

But to buy it, you must have a prescription.

The Colorado Springs docs must be writing medical marijuana prescriptions left and right.

Dispensaries seem almost as prevalent as fastfood restaurants. And when you page through

the city’s alternative newspaper, it is teeming with ads for marijuana-laced candy, cookies, brownies, cakes … you name it.

Hardly a week goes by when there isn’t a news story about new problems stemming from marijuana — rental homes ruined by being converted to grow houses and foreign drug rings moving in to set up illegal grow operations — some manned by forced labor — to cut down on the cost of transporting their pot.

The police are overtaxed trying to keep up. But overall, Colorado Springs life goes on. No matter what, you can’t stop stupid or crooks.

eventeen months after the restaurant and bar World of Beer opened at 1888 Main St., owner Mark Broderick headed to City Hall in hopes of getting a liquor license for his business.

On Sept. 21, Broderick attended a public workshop held to discuss the restaurant’s request to use a new license. During the next three months, Broderick and other World of Beer partners will have to seek approval from city staff, the Planning Board and the City Commission to ensure the business can keep serving liquor.

World of Beer initially operated using a SRX liquor license, used by restaurants with 150 or more seats. The city doesn’t require any special approvals to use this license, but the state mandates that a business with a SRX license must derive at least 51% of its rev-

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD When World of Beer opened in April 2015, it was welcomed as an addition to a burgeoning entertainment district.

The east end of downtown continues to trend in that direction: On Friday, the Sarasota Sky Bar and Club officially opened in the historic Charles Ringling building at 1927 Ringling Blvd. Even the bar’s ostensible competitors were happy to hear the news.

“We’re excited whenever a new business opens up on this end,” Broderick said. “That can only improve the environment for businesses.”

Kauffman said the businesses in the area had a symbiotic relationship. Tim Barrett, the general manager of Made Restaurant on Main Street, said crowds going to a movie at Main Plaza or a show at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre tend to explore the neighborhood’s other options.

“The bartenders all know each other, they hang out with each other, they support each other,”

A state audit determined that World of Beer isn’t meeting that mandate. The restaurant is still allowed to sell liquor for now, but Broderick is now working to obtain a 4COP license — which the city classifies as a “nightclub” use — to keep serving long-term.

At the workshop, no members of the public showed up to discuss World of Beer’s proposal. So far, Broderick and property owner Mark Kauffman haven’t heard any complaints from residents.

Broderick said his business wasn’t meeting the sales quota because World of Beer sells many expensive craft beers. Even with the new license, he said the bar would operate as it always had. “‘Nightclub’ — it’s a weird language to use,” Broderick said.

“I think the Sarasota city government should have another description in which it should fall.”

With the redevelopment of Main Plaza still looming, area businesses hope a distinct identity will continue to crystallize.

“It’s a growing entertainment area, in a mature way,” Kauffman said. “The entities that are there aren’t just simply bars; they’re looking for the mature crowd.”

FISH OUT OF WATER 6:34 a.m. — 1300 block of Siesta Drive Dispute: Crossing under the Siesta Key bridge while fishing, a man reported that another fisherman threatened to throw him under the water. The fisherman acknowledged the incident, and said he approached the man because he woke up another fisherman who was sleeping and trying to enjoy the peace and quiet. The fisherman said he was Irish, and said his Irish roots came out when he told the man to go fish somewhere else if he didn’t like this location. The fisherman denied making any physical threats.

HIGH STAKES 7:30 a.m. — 2500 block of Novus Street Dispute: A man said his neighbor removed a metal stake from his side of the property line. The man said he had the stake in the ground to mark where his property line started.

The man’s neighbor said she removed the stake because she was doing yard work and it was in the way. An officer asked the neighbor to place the stake back in the ground, and the neighbor agreed.

POPPING OFF 4 p.m. — 1300 block of South Tamiami Trail Property Damage: A man reported that someone threw a cup full of soda into his truck. The man said he was parked at a grocery station, and when he came out, he found a cup from a fastfood restaurant in the back of his truck. The man asked the grocery store manager if the incident was visible on the security cameras. The manager said it was and that another man exited his car, walked over to the man’s truck and threw the cup through the truck’s window.

ast year, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium announced a bold goal at its annual black-tie fundraiser, Oceanic Evening: Raise $50 million to expand the lab’s mission and impact through the Oceans of Opportunity campaign.

Mote announced Monday that it surpassed its $50 million goal late this summer.

“It’s exhilarating, it’s humbling, it’s exciting,” said Mote President and CEO Michael Crosby. “But I think the humbling piece is the biggest piece because when you think about it, to be able to secure the commitment from the community of such an enormous amount of support, it really does let you know just how important this community feels Mote is to the culture, to the way of life in this community and to how important the community feels the environment here is.”

Crosby said the campaign was needed to achieve Mote’s 2020 Vision and Strategic Plan, which has four goals focused on expanding the organization’s research capabilities and impact.

The only bricks-and-mortar piece of the campaign is the new facility being built on Mote’s Florida Keys property. However, in the distant future, Mote will look for an additional mainland campus that can be more accessible to more of the Sarasota

Another aim was to raise awareness of Mote as more than just a fun place to spend an afternoon.

Campaign Chairman Bob Essner said when people think of Mote, they think of its aquarium and its shark tanks and “touch me” stuff.

Essner said they didn’t just ask for money, they told people to come look at the facility, tour the laboratories and meet the scientists.

More than 23,000 people contributed to the campaign.

Of those, 260 gifts were for $25,000 or more, 80 gifts were $100,000 or more, and 11 were more than $1 million. Donations came from all 50 states.

Crosby points to the fact that 50% of donors were new donors as a sign of the campaign’s success.

“I had kids coming into my office literally giving me Ziploc baggies full of change and dollar bills that they were fundraising because they were passionate about the mission of Mote,” Crosby said.

lorida high school volleyball might soon have a new mecca.

If it was up to Chad Sutton, there would be no “might” about it.

The first-year varsity girls volleyball coach at Cardinal Mooney High School wants his school to become the destination of some of the state’s top players. In fact, one of the main reasons Sutton made the switch to Cardinal Mooney after five years at Sarasota High School was the willingness of the school to implement his vision and goals for the program.

“I want this to be a place where if you play volleyball, this is where you have to go,” Sutton said.

Sutton already has thrown numerous ideas on how to accomplish his vision at Bill Donivan, Cardinal Mooney’s athletic director. One was Cougar Encounter, a 16-team varsity volleyball tournament held at Cardinal Mooney and Braden River high schools Sept. 24. Donivan was a big fan of the idea because, besides being fun for athletes and parents, it eliminates the need for so many games during the week.

Starting a boys volleyball program at the school is also a top priority, and one that is feasible early in Sutton’s tenure. Sutton said he had 40 male students inquire about the idea of a boys program in a single day.

But the biggest change Sutton is looking to make is to establish a beach volleyball program with not just a team but on-campus courts.

Sutton has already started a few campaigns for the project.

His timeline and the school’s timeline may not line up perfectly. Asked about the sand courts, Donivan smiled and said they may be built “in a few years.” Sutton simply said he wanted everything accomplished as soon as possible.

praise for his new coach, saying Sutton has done a lot right in the short time he has been with the Cougars.

All this planning for the future doesn’t mean Sutton has forgotten about his current girls varsity team. The team has been playing well, and Sutton is prepping his players for what will be a tough district tournament.

“Three teams in our district are top 15 in the state, all-classes,” Sutton said. “We have the fourth-hardest schedule according to MaxPreps in the state, all-classes. So we’re playing the hardest teams we can to prepare ourselves for that district. At the end of the day, it just comes down to when you’re in that district (tournament), can you win when it counts? We’ve got to see where we finish off in our seeding, and then see how well we do in the tournament.”

Doing well in the district tournament would be nothing new to Cardinal Mooney. The team has won 12 district championships, with the most recent title coming in 2014. A drop-off in that success likely would not be met with satisfaction. Thankfully for Cardinal Mooney, it doesn’t seem like Sutton will let that happen.

He’s a teacher. After a win at Cougar Encounter, he instructed his team to watch the other games going on instead of taking off the hour before its next game. His focus is singular, and he believes that while on the court, his team’s should be, too.

Sutton praised the squad’s six seniors for buying in to his grand vision, saying he’s proud of the way they’ve played thus far this season. That class includes Madison McNally, Annie Shaw, Brooke Picchi and Sophia Hebda, all from Sarasota.

The Cougars will have a significant drop-off in experience after the seniors leave next year. That might worry other, less confident coaches — but not Sutton.

“We only have one junior, and then it’s just all sophomores and freshmen,” Sutton said. “For a couple years, we’re going to have kids on the court who are playing three years for us. It’s very exciting. I’m very happy with where they’re at now, but I’m very excited about where the future of our program is going to be.”

If even half of Sutton’s plans get past the drawing-board stage and become reality, an entire region of volleyball players will join him in that excitement.

Frank called on community organizations to collaborate to help solve child hunger in Sarasota County, where 53% of children in school are enrolled in free and reduced-price meal programs.

Sarasota schools with the highest rates of free and reducedpriced lunches are Alta Vista Elementary School at 96% and Tuttle Elementary School at 91%.

Both schools have pantries supported by All Faiths Food Bank.

“When children are not in school or families are not on campus receiving meals, there isn’t a consistent source of nutrition,” said Barbara Shirley, Alta Vista’s principal.

Keynote speaker Florida Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. Celeste Philip said some children only have access to healthy staples like fruits and vegetables through school meals.

“For most of us, that’s such a difficult concept to understand, but for many of the families that we are talking about, that is truly their reality,” Philip said.

In Sarasota County, 14% of residents experience food insecurity, meaning they have limited or uncertain access to adequate food.

But for children, the rate is even more staggering at 24%.

Now, All Faiths Food Bank wants to bring organizations in the community to the table to learn how they can help end child hunger in Sarasota.

Community leaders were invited to that table Tuesday during the 2016 Child Hunger Summit at Sarasota Municipal Auditorium.

All Faiths Food Bank CEO Sandra Frank said the organization serves 60,000 people per year, but that’s not enough, given the level of food insecurity in Sarasota and DeSoto counties.

“Hunger is a health issue,” Frank said. “When you begin to analyze it that way, it expands your reach and collaborations with other organizations.”

Built in 1953, it has five bedrooms, four baths, a pool and 4,004 square feet of living area. It previously sold for $1.6 million in 2003.

t. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church invited members of the community to step right up for a chance to win prizes with carnival games during the St. Michael Festival Saturday.

The festival celebrates the feast day for patron St. Michael the Archangel, which takes place Sept. 29.

Along with carnival games, guests enjoyed local food trucks, face painting, French baked treats and a live auction.
