s the clock ticked down, a crowd gathered in the donor lounge of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County to find out how much money this year’s Giving Challenge raised for local nonprofits.

Together, the group counted down the final 10 seconds out loud before Community Foundation President/CEO Roxie Jerde announced the amount raised.

A total of $5.7 million was collected from donors in the community. But with the Patterson Foundation’s match, that amount more than doubled to $13.4 million.

With the announcement of the grand total, Jerde high-fived Patterson Foundation President/ CEO Debra Jacobs.

“I cannot say thank you enough,” Jerde said. “I hope you have the pride that I do that this is where I call home.”

The $13.4 million will be distributed to the 559 participating nonprofit organizations.

Among the nonprofits, Cat Depot brought in the most funds with $104,271 raised, while Honor Animal Rescue generated the most gifts — 1,313 in all.

The Patterson Foundation matched contributions of up to $100 for returning donors and doubled matches of up to $100 for new donors.

Observers win press awards Nine newspapers in the Observer Media Group garnered 81 total awards, including 35 first-place finishes, at the 2015 Florida Press Association Better Weekly Newspaper contest Sept. 16, at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota.

Deputy Managing Editor David Conway won firstplace in the business reporting category for his story, “This brew’s for you” on local craft brewers, and the state and local tax reporting category for his article “Questions arise on value of city trips.” Conway was also the recipient of The TaxWatch Award.

Arts & Entertainment Managing Editor Nick Friedman won best headline for “King of Queens,” a profile of Barry Ayers, who performs in drag as Beneva Fruitville.

Thunder by the Bay has had a presence in downtown Sarasota since 1999, but the event will move out of the city as event organizers respond to a growing collection of concerned residents, businesses and officials.

Festival organizers hope a new venue will create new energy for an event that became divisive in downtown Sarasota.

When she got a call from Thunder by the Bay organizer Lucy Nicandri earlier this summer, it felt like fate.

Now, the Friday night Thunder by the Bay festivities are staying in Sarasota, as Gulf Gate is hosting the Cruisers & Customs block party.

After area business owners came together to officially form a merchants association earlier this year, Leffler said the event will help introduce the area to both tourists and residents.

“Everyone’s really enthusiastic about it, and it’s a totally positive experience for us,” she said. “We get a lot of new faces in here, we get some business exposure and we’re doing something great for the community.”

he 2017 Thunder by the Bay motorcycle festival will be held a little farther away from the body of water it’s named after.

On Monday, the Suncoast Charities for Children board of directors voted to relocate the bulk of the event from downtown Sarasota to Lakewood Ranch. The festival, scheduled for Jan. 5-8, will primarily take place at the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch.

Portions of the festival will be held in other parts of the region, as well. A Friday night block party will relocate from Hillview Street to Gulf Gate Village, just south of Stickney Point Road.

This year’s Thunder by the Bay drew negative feedback from downtown Sarasota residents and merchants. After officials started to discuss potential changes to the city’s special events regulations, festival organizers began searching for a new venue.

Although city staff and event organizers reached an agreement on the potential use of Payne Park as a new home for Thunder by the Bay, some neighboring residents voiced concerns about the impact of the festival. Those concerns contributed to the decision to relocate, according to Festival Director Lucy Nicandri.

“Thunder by the Bay, with an established history of 19 years — we don’t want to keep changing locations every year,” Nicandri said.

MOVING OUT

Nicandri is optimistic about the event’s future in Lakewood Ranch.

But there’s a reason the event has been held downtown since 1999, why organizers sought to retain a presence on Main Street, and why

Payne Park remained under consideration through the summer.

“Is it bittersweet to not have it in downtown?” Nicandri said.

“Absolutely.”

Earlier this year, Nicandri said her goal was to secure a venue downtown if possible. Ultimately, Suncoast Charities determined it wasn’t. That decision was partially attributed to the city’s still-evolving special events regulations and the prospect of increased fees if the festival relocated to Payne Park.

City staff is drafting a proposed ordinance that would create heightened restrictions on events that close at least five city blocks — or completely prohibit events of that scale. Only one city event was large enough to meet that standard: Thunder by the Bay. A vocal contingent is arguing city officials chased off an event that injected activity into the heart of the city. John Saputo, president of event sponsor Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, encouraged Nicandri to explore the move to Lakewood Ranch.

“Every year, despite the fact that this is one of the largest, most influential charities in Manatee and Sarasota County, it became harder and harder for the charity and sponsors to deal with the city of Sarasota,” Saputo said.

But City Commissioner Susan Chapman said the criticism of Thunder by the Bay was rooted in concerns from businesses and residents.

This year, Downtown Economic Development Coordinator Norm Gollub surveyed more than 100 businesses impacted by the festival’s street closures. About 62% of the responses said Thunder by the Bay had a negative impact on business that weekend.

“According to the actual research done by the economic development director, it is not an aid to business,” Chapman said.

“I am more supportive of yearround businesses.”

Although Chapman argued merchants are heavily reliant on doing business in-season, Visit Sarasota County President Virginia Haley said the first weeks of the new year are one of the slow-

est periods downtown.

For tourists, the prospect of attending a large event can be a major attraction. Haley said the draw is even greater for events attended by a significant number of local residents. She encouraged city officials to be wary of policy changes that would ward away a diverse mix of special events.

“Our visitors are the people who want to be in a real, authentic place, where you clearly see it’s a diverse community,” Haley said. “I hope we don’t become a restrictive, narrow community.”

The event isn’t losing all ties to the city. A Saturday morning motorcycle ride will begin at Sarasota Ford and end at the Premier Sports Campus. Considering the proximity of Lakewood Ranch, Haley and Saputo hoped the event would still have a positive impact on Sarasota.

“I think we’re going to get the best of both worlds,” Saputo said.

“I think Lakewood Ranch is going to get a tremendous amount of business. Then, I think the motorcyclists will head to downtown Sarasota for an evening of fun.”

Thomas Krause, a former English and speech teacher at Pine View School, Zare digitally released the videos of his school news channel, allowing alumni and current students to rewind to Pine View in the late ’80s and early ’90s — think bowl cuts, acid-washed jeans, Doc Martens boots and Velcro. He rifled through an old storage container and dug out VHS tapes he hadn’t seen since high school, then uploaded the videos to his Vimeo page.

“I wanted to see Mr. Krause like we all remembered,” said Zare from his home in Los Angeles.

“PrimeTime would not have been possible without him.”

‘SOMETHING DIFFERENT’

Zitske went on to pursue a career in filmmaking after Pine View PrimeTime. Zare posted more than 50 Pine View PrimeTime videos to Vimeo in 2013.

PrimeTime started as a a girls middle school basketball game report. Zare didn’t originally think his sports segment would earn his show a permanent slot on the Pine View morning schedule.

After the release of his first episode, Zare remembers that he could feel a buzz around campus.

“People would flood to the camera,” he said.

Originally shy and standoffish, Zare learned to express himself while developing his talent for video via Pine View PrimeTime. With Krause’s support, he emerged as one of the most popular students on campus.

With the sizeable time commitment, Zare put together many of the earliest and most primitive episodes in his bedroom. By 11th grade, Zare had a stable of fellow newscasters and actors.

“We just wanted to do something different,” said Zare.

PrimeTime eventually evolved into a school course that was offered Zare’s senior year. With more than a dozen contributors, the show produced skits, impres-

sions, reports, parodies and competitions.

Throughout its three years of production, Zare and staff created more than 60 episodes. The team documented the school’s pride and energy, allowing for the Pine View of the late ’80s and early ’90s to be available 25 years later.

“Every episode of Pine View PrimeTime belongs to Pine View,” Zare said.

Today, Zare lives with his wife and two daughters in Cailfornia. He works with actor Morgan Freeman’s production company, Revelations, and has served as an archivist on a variety projects, such as “The Story of God” and “Through the Wormhole,” both featuring Freeman.

‘IT MADE ME FEARLESS’

“Bittersweet.”

That’s how 43-year-old Sarah Michel described the rediscovery of PrimeTime episodes. Like her other team members, she said that the nostalgic experience was surreal.

Now the graduate program director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Program at the University of Maryland, Michel said that after watching the videos, high school doesn’t seem like it was that long ago.

After moving to Sarasota, Michel joined the PrimeTime team in her junior year.

“PrimeTime taught me how to tell stories,” said Michel. “It made me fearless.”

‘BIG MAN ON CAMPUS’

Steve Largo, the recently retired Pine View principal of 25 years, started his career the same year that PrimeTime began filming.

There was “very little out of bounds for them,” Largo said, remembering the day his daughter, Ashley, was born. Largo heard a knock on the hospital room door, and a PrimeTime reporting team was there waiting to meet the new family member — with a camera.

Largo recalls Zare as an important figure on campus, on par with a student government president or varsity athlete.

“Andy Zare was the big man on campus,” Largo said. “Andy Zare and his crew.”

‘THE FOUNDATION FOR MY FUTURE CAREER’

Eric Zitske, who remains in contact with Zare today, joined the PrimeTime production team in 1989.

“I just jumped in,” Zitske, 44, said.

Throughout his high school TV career, Zitske delivered tonguein-cheek fashion features, conducted interviews, impersonated Indiana Jones and performed a musical impression of Don Ho singing “Tiny Bubbles” on Siesta Key Beach.

“There was always editing to do, writing and ideas to brainstorm, costumes or props or set pieces to put together, equipment to learn and camaraderie to share in,” said Zitske.

Today, Zitske is also independent video production professional responsible for the viral web series “Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager.”

“I didn’t know it at the time, but it was the foundation for my future career,” Zitske said.

County commissioners stand by incentive program Commissioners say more conversation is needed about what industries need incentives.

fter expressing unanimous support for the county’s economic incentive policy this week, county commissioners passed a motion to “tweak” the program.

That was the key word at Wednesday’s meeting— tweak.

Despite public criticism regarding the program’s efficacy, the commission stood by the program as a whole. The commission maintains that providing incentives to interested businesses makes Sarasota County a more competitive environment for investment overall.

Still, commissioners conceded there needs to be dialogue between residents, county staff and the business community regarding precisely what industries need to be incentives.

The county’s incentive policy has been a divisive issue since the program’s inception in 2010.

The program was the subject of criticism after several businesses failed to uphold agreements with the county after receiving an upfront incentive payment.

The county eventually sought repayment of those funds, and in 2012, the county amended its policy to avoid upfront incentive awards.

Commissioner Carolyn Mason alluded to failings early in the policy’s history while voicing support for the future of the program.

“We had some hiccups in the beginning,” Mason said. “I don’t think the process is broken.”

But not everyone is so confident.

Cathy Antunes, a resident activist and former County Commission candidate, said her concerns regarding the process are tied to the beneficiaries. She believes the county is dedicated to aiding bigger, national and regional businesses rather than fostering local entrepreneurs with smaller, low-interest loans.

“Their focus is toward poaching and luring companies with money,” Antunes said. “They pay lip service to fostering local companies, but I don’t see that happening.”

Mark Huey, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corp. of Sarasota County, said the program equally supports local businesses, as well as businesses looking to relocate to Sarasota County. The EDC assists the county in bringing new businesses to invest in Sarasota County, with incentive funds serving as one tool to pursue that goal.

“The program was designed very intentionally to be supportive of local companies as well as companies moving here,” Huey said.

According to a memo from Jeff Maultsby, director of the county office of business and economic development, the program has created 2,000 jobs and facilitated

the expansion or relocation of 35 businesses to the county.

Wednesday’s discussion also reflected the contentious conversation regarding “Project Mulligan,” a proposal to award North American Roofing more than $1 million in incentives to relocate its headquarters to Sarasota County. The money would have been generated through a combination of county and state funds.

The commission denied the appropriation in late May after members of the business community argued the incentive package would only bring more competition to a healthy local industry.

Commissioner Christine Robinson, who also sits on the EDC’s board, emphasized the need for more conversation between county staff and the business community regarding incentives.

“It can’t be everybody nodding at each other and agreeing with each other,” Commissioner Robinson said. “It has to be a real political discussion.”

For now, those involved in the incentive process continue to express support for the spirit of the program. Those officials hope to secure broader community support as the policy is revisited.

“One of the strengths that this community has had is alignment of all parties,” Huey said. “Diversifying the economy is hard work.

It really does require everyone to work together.”

A LOOK BACK

Commissioners are confident in their support of the county’s incentive program and voiced their continued support of the program.

However, the county’s upcoming discussions regarding its incentive policies come after a series of conflicts between past incentive recipients and the business community.

play golf, and the hardest thing about playing in Sarasota, after dealing with the heat, is deciding which of the many golf courses in the area to play. The city-owned Bobby Jones Golf Club is never near the top of the list. It is what one of my golf buddies calls a dog — a course in lousy condition.

The Bobby Jones Club has been in decline for years now.

As the physical condition of the clubhouse, fairways and greens has declined, so have the finances. Over the last four years the Club has lost an estimated $1.3 million and consumed all of its reserves. And the citizen’s committee advising the City Commission on what to do with the club says up to $14.5 million needs to be invested to bring the course up to good condition.

Past attempts to fund course improvements haven’t worked.

When Sarasota voters approved a 1-cent sales tax hike in 2007, $1.5 million of that money was slated to improve the clubhouse at Bobby Jones. Since then, that amount has reduced to $1.1 million, and city staff wants to reallocate nearly half of that money to making repairs on the course and paying for a master plan for the Club.

So the proposal on the table right now is for the city to divert millions of dollars from other, much-needed parts of the budget (like paying for city worker pensions, homeless services or public safety) to try to bring the Bobby Jones Club back from the brink. And after that, the course may still lose money every year due to all the surrounding competition. Sounds like a gamble and a bad deal for city taxpayers.

The good news is that there is

a sensible alternative. Few if any cities are opening new municipal golf courses; rather, recent years have seen dozens of city-owned courses turned over to private management and turned from money losers into money makers.

A PRIVATE BOBBY JONES COURSE?

All the city needs to do is put out a request for proposals for private golf companies (there are many) to make offers for what they could do if they manage Bobby Jones. Basically, the private company would agree to take over managing the course for a certain number of years, agree to make capital investments to improve the course, and pay the city either a fixed fee, share of the net revenue, or some other structured payment.

What this does is let a company that runs golf courses all over the nation, and makes money with them, invest its money in the improvements, rather than gambling taxpayer dollars. They would do the marketing to bring in more golfers and reap the rewards if they succeed, but also bear the costs if they fail. This kind of arrangement puts the risk of success or failure on the private firm, where it belongs, not on city taxpayers. But the city retains ownership of the course and control of rates and policies through the contract.

And the best thing is, if the city puts out an RFP and no company thinks it can make a winner of the Bobby Jones Club, or none of the offers are a good deal for the city, well, we are no worse off than we are today. In this way, seeing whether private golf managers, who run golf courses for profit, are interested in managing Bobby Jones tests whether it’s worth rehabilitating at all. That would give us more food for thought on the wisdom of investing tax dollars in trying to bring the Club back.

In 2002, Chicago’s Cook County owned a golf course that for nearly a decade was losing money, had fewer players,

deteriorating course conditions and rising customer complaints.

Hmm. Sound familiar? The county brought in a private company to take over the golf course, which rebuilt and refurbished facilities and the course, brought in staff, replaced old equipment and carts, and turned the course around. The county went from losing $2 million per year on the course to an annual profit ranging between $800,000 to $1.5 million.

Two years ago, Phoenix approved a 30-year lease of the city-owned Maryvale Municipal Golf Course, which had run up millions of dollars in deficits over years, draining over $250,000 out of the general fund each year. Facilities had fallen into grave disrepair. Again, this sounds very familiar. The new private managers took on all operating costs and invested $8 million for course repairs and an upgraded clubhouse, and it will pay the city of Phoenix 10% of net revenues after it recoups its upfront investment. This arrangement worked so well Phoenix went on to privatize six other city-owned golf courses.

The choice seems clear. City leaders can gamble that spending millions of taxpayer dollars on the Bobby Jones Club will turn things around, even though the same people will be running it the same way that has been losing golfers and money for years. Or they can bring in new management willing to bet its own money that they can turn the club into a winner for itself and the city of Sarasota.

The second option, obviously, is potentially better and should be tried before pumping more tax dollars into the course.

perpetuated a myth that traffic will become unbearable as a result of having tall buildings next to Tamiami Trail. However, the causal connection just isn’t there, and we should not expect that U.S. 41 will be widened downtown either. Rather, roundabouts are planned along Tamiami Trail partly because planners and engineers understand that slower speeds actually have the potential to increase the raw number of cars that can pass through a street. Building new lanes, particularly in an urban core with increasing population, will not relieve congestion in the long run (this is a welldocumented phenomenon). Nor is free-flowing traffic economically desirable for a downtown.

Second, there have been complaints that the building is too close to the sidewalk. Usually, these are tied to complaints about traffic or how the building looks. Disliking a project’s architectural choices does not form a legitimate excuse to oppose administrative review

often brag to my out-of-state friends that Sarasota has the finest urban core on the west coast of Florida. One reason we have built such a great physical environment in just a few years is because of administrative approval for downtown buildings, which requires that city staff review project applications in detail. The idea is that the public review process for the downtown code was open and extensive; since we agreed as a community on the built environment we want for Sarasota’s future, we should allow a proposed project to be built if it meets all code requirements. Because of this, I support administrative approval downtown.

Recently, the construction of the Vue, which has been a real estate success, has caused some discontent, but it seems that the complaints are not related to administrative review itself.

First, many people have

Overall, the downtown code has given us great buildings that are really friendly to the sidewalk; however, the Vue’s subpar frontage on 41 and its disproportional relationship to the existing narrow sidewalk could certainly improve. Yet these changes can happen directly to the code without requiring extensive public comment periods on a project-by-project basis, and without opposing administrative review for the entire downtown core and neighborhoods.

Sarasota’s choice to cut bureaucracy and to reward those who play by our communitydeveloped rules makes us a leader in the nation, and that is a position we should support.

On the morning of Sunday, Sept.

4, Pastry Art owner Chip Beeman arrived at his business and discovered a scene of destruction along Main Street.

Overnight, on two blocks of Main Street, someone ripped the flowers out of baskets attached to the light poles.

“Somebody walked by every one of them and pulled them out all the way down,” Beeman said.

OK, it might not be the most gruesome crime scene in the world. The flowers were replanted, but the incident is indicative of an early issue for the Downtown in Bloom project, a $431,000 investment from the Downtown Improvement District.

Project contractor Plant Parents reported an expense of $570.50 for plants vandalized from August to Sept. 6.

DID Operations Manager John Moran said the group expected some vandalism, and Plant Parents owner David Glosser thinks the damage can be covered with money set aside to replace the flowers four times each year.

The DID has budgeted more than $44,000 annually through 2019 for flower replacement.

“It’s starting to go away,” Glosser said. “I don’t think it’s going to be a really big factor.”

Despite the early issues, the DID remains confident in the value of the Downtown in Bloom project.

“I haven’t had one person tell me they didn’t like them,” board member Ron Soto said. “Everybody raves about them.”

Superintendent search moves to final stage ANNA BRUGMANN STAFF WRITER

The Sarasota County School Board has identified four finalists in its search for Superintendent Lori White’s replacement.

School board members released the names on Tuesday, a week ahead of their original schedule.

Todd Bowden, the only internal applicant, will advance to the final stage of the selection process. Bowden currently serves as the Sarasota County School District’s executive director of career, technical and adult education.

The other three finalists all come from Florida school districts. They are: n Mark Porter, Monroe County School District superintendent; n Brennan Asplen III, St. Johns County School District deputy superintendent for academic and student services; n Andrew Ryberg, former Indian River County School District assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

The four finalists were selected from a shortlist of eight candidates, which had been narrowed down from the district’s original list of 49 applicants.

Bowden, Porter, Asplen and Rynberg will be interviewed by the board in person Oct. 12 and Oct. 13. Asplen is also being considered for the vacant St. Johns County superintendent position.

The former Aaron’s Fish Camp property on Siesta Key could be slated for a major overhaul if property owner Chris Brown moves forward with plans to renovate the building at 149 Avenida Messina.

The Siesta Key Village building has been vacant since May, but Brown said the renovations would be done with an eye toward attracting a new restaurant to the space. Specifically, he’s interested in attracting a fine-dining option to complement the other food options in the district.

“We do think that there is a void for fine dining,” Brown said.

The project is still in its preliminary stages. No applications have been submitted to the county for approval, but Brown, along with Siesta Key architect Mark Smith, have started to explore the possibility of upgrading the structure.

Brown’s Siesta Key Village property portfolio includes two nearby restaurants, The Hub Baja Grill and The Cottage. Brown is also the owner of The Beach Club.

As of now, plans for the building include flood-proofing the restaurant and upgrading the overall aesthetic. Smith said preliminary plans include replacing the roof and enclosing the current exterior seating.

“If someone is going to come in for a little fine dining, they probably want a little air conditioning,” Brown said.

Although the improvements likely will not be complete until at least next year, both Smith and Brown expect the finished product to blend in with the rest of the businesses in the village.

“It will fit it,” Smith said. “It’s new, and it’s code-conforming, but it still fits the neighborhood and fabric of the beach environment.”

SKIN IN THE GAME 6:49 p.m. — 2100 block of Wood Street Suspicion: A woman had a friend watch her house while she was out of town. The woman’s friend invited another person to the woman’s house, and that person removed an animal skin from the house and has failed to return it.

The woman said this issue began in February, and she’s been trying to get her property back since then. The woman said the other person is never available for her to come over and pick it up. An officer informed the woman that the issue was a civil matter.

KEY QUESTIONS 5:34 p.m. — 2000 block of Adams Lane Lost/found property: A woman went to the police station to report that her mailbox key was lost. In July, the woman and her husband stayed at the residence of another man for four days.

When they left the residence, they realized they lost the mailbox key. The man claimed he had their key and would return it for a fee. Asked for more information, the woman was unable to provide any further details about the man and said she was uncertain about his name and whereabouts. The woman said she just wanted to report the key as lost.

WITHOUT A PADDLE 2:47 p.m. — 3300 block of South School Avenue Dispute: A man said a woman was refusing to return two of his kayaks, which she took as collateral when he did not pay her money he owed her.

The woman said someone told her it was OK to take the man’s kayaks when he failed to pay her the money. An officer told the woman that refusing to return the kayaks would be grand theft, and a warrant could be issued for her arrest. The woman then agreed to return the kayaks.

City continues push for county CRA funds The city thinks it’s entitled to another $4.5 million in county property taxes. The county disagrees — so the two could be headed for mediation.

At the end of the month, the downtown Sarasota Community Redevelopment Area will formally expire after 30 years of joint city-county funding.

That’s what county officials believe, at least.

But the city still says the county is obligated to make one last payment into the CRA trust fund.

That payment, based on a segment of property tax revenue from within the CRA boundaries, would top $4.5 million.

Because the county has formally rejected the city’s claim to that money, city officials may soon ask the county to go through a statesanctioned conflict resolution process for resolving disputes between local governments.

Depending on how committed the city is to obtaining the final CRA payment, that request could be a precursor to a potential lawsuit between the city and county.

At the Sept. 6 City Commission meeting, City Attorney Robert Fournier laid out the city’s case for another CRA payment. The CRA was established in 1986, and because the county voted to end the CRA after 30 years, it’s set to expire in 2016. But while the county believes that refers to the fiscal year — which ends Sept. 30 — the city is arguing that it should refer to the tax year, which ends Dec. 31.

Fournier pointed to several pieces of evidence to bolster the city’s claims. Perhaps most notably, a 2004 interlocal agreement between the city and county specifically states there would be no further CRA payments after the 2016 tax year.

“I think all of those things, in the aggregate, put us in a position where I feel comfortable raising the issue,” Fournier said. “How it will be resolved, I’m not sure.”

County officials have said there are several county documents memorializing its belief the CRA would sunset after fiscal year 2016. Fournier acknowledged at least one city budget document from 2007 that includes a similar timeline, but called it a simple error on the part of city staff.

In October, the city will discuss sending a formal request to the county to enter the conflict resolution process, which would allow both staffs to discuss a possible agreement on this topic.

The county could decline to participate in the conflict resolution, Fournier said.

Although it’s unclear how far the city is willing to push this issue, City Manager Tom Barwin projected confidence in his interpretation of the CRA regulations.

“Thirty-year agreements mean 30 payments,” Barwin said. “Anything else is really rather meaningless. We’re hopeful this can be resolved in an equitable, common resolution.”

hen Robert Sullivan and his wife, Pat, looked to retire in Florida, they took their time exploring the state, hunting for the perfect community.

Ultimately, the arts and culture of Sarasota, amenities in Lakewood Ranch and the pristine waters at Nathan Benderson Park brought them to Rosedale in January.

“My wife was a kayaker in college,” Robert Sullivan said. “One of the reasons we came to the community was this park.”

Although Sullivan had planned to spend his retirement doing consulting and other work, those thoughts quickly ended. Sullivan is the new president and CEO of Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center and Associates, the nonprofit that operates Nathan Benderson Park.

He replaces Paul Blackketter, who stepped down to pursue his own consulting business.

Sullivan comes to the park at a busy time. A year remains until the park hosts the 2017 World Rowing Championships. While the World Championships has its own organization to plan its event, Sullivan has to make sure Nathan Benderson Park is the perfect host.

“All the elements you need for a successful event are in a single place, shopping, the arts, the beaches, hotels,” he said. “We can build on that.”

He will be building with a park already recognized as the country’s top rowing facility.

“We want the rowers to say this is the best facility in the world,” he said. “We want the spectators to say that we take care of their needs. Are the restrooms clean?

Is it safe?”

Sullivan understands the job he does has economic implications beyond the World Rowing Championships.

“We want to bring people here to stay at local hotels, eat at restaurants,” he said. “That’s why we go after so many national and international events. That’s how you drive economic impact. But, you can’t do just those. There’s community events. We continu-

“I want to run this place so people say, ‘I wonder what’s going on there this week?’ or they just show up for events,” Sullivan said. “That means success. I used to work with Bill Graham in San Francisco. He treated people so well, his reputation was such that people would come for concerts even if they didn’t know who was performing.”

The park will be a change of direction for him.

“My experience is in indoor facilities, but I’ve done a lot of outdoor shows, as well,” he said.

“At one point, I did a Metallica show in a corn field in Illinois for 35,000 people. It was a great show.

Sullivan, 62, comes from Wichita Falls, Texas, where for 11 years he managed the Multi-Purpose Events Center, consisting of an arena, convention center, horse exhibition center and memorial auditorium. Over his career, he has staged amateur and professional events and programs, has been involved in regional and international events and has organized concerts.

Sullivan said enhancing the facility and providing more amenities is an ongoing process that will never be done.

“I’m most excited about the future,” he said. “We’re only limited by our imagination. I love the magic of entertaining. That’s what keeps everybody young.”

Diverging Diamond project The Florida Department of Transportation has assured the world championship committee that its construction at the Interstate 75-University Parkway intersection is on time and will be completed before the event begins Sept. 23. FDOT has offered a $5 million early completion bonus if the project is finished in late July 2017.

Softball player tries new course JEN BLANCO SPORTS EDITOR

H

annah Roberson is still searching for her swing.

A three-year starter on the Sarasota High softball team, the senior second baseman opted to spend this offseason on the green instead of the diamond as a member of Sarasota’s girls golf team.

Although Roberson played a couple holes on occasion at The Meadows Country Club when she was younger, it wasn’t until Sarasota softball coach Amy Nye was named the Sailors’ new girls golf coach that Roberson thought about playing on the golf team.

Looking to learn a new sport and get more involved in the school, Roberson joined the golf team, dragging her best friend and fellow softball teammate, Anna Sadlo, along for the ride.

A month-and-a-half into the season, Roberson, 17, is realizing that power will only carry her so far.

“I swing too much like a softball player when playing golf,” Roberson said with a laugh.

While Roberson is fortunate enough to be able to hit the ball far when she needs to, hitting it straight is an entirely different story.

the ponds and woods surrounding the green around Serenoa Golf Club in Sarasota. She also hit a couple of houses along the fairway.

“It goes out of play a lot,” Roberson said.

At first, Roberson expected it to happen. Now, she tends to get slightly irritated with herself when her ball veers off course.

“Luckily I don’t lose as many balls anymore,” Roberson said.

“I’ve gotten better.”

While the experience of learning a new sport has been fun, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with its own set of challenges.

“I just tell her to slow down a bit,” Nye said. “Golf is a slower-

paced sport than softball, and she is so used to the fast-paced game of softball. It takes her time to adjust.”

Roberson has come to realize that golf is a hard sport to learn, and for the first time, the Sailors aren’t relying on her expertise to help carry the team.

It’s uncharted territory for Roberson, who helped lead the Sarasota softball team to a state runner-up finish in 2015.

“It’s definitely something I’m not used to — learning a sport in such a little amount of time and getting thrown right into it,” Roberson said.

Roberson played her first match of the season Sept.

13 after the Sailors’ first two

matches of the season got rained out due to Hurricane Hermine. It also was the first time she played a full nine holes this season.

Roberson shot 69, as Sarasota topped Palmetto 195-217. The Sailors returned to the course Sept. 14 against Riverview.

Roberson will continue playing golf through mid-October before going back to the softball field in January.

James Tapley believes there will always be a market for bookbinding.

eather-bound books are becoming increasingly rare as they’re replaced by sleek, shiny tablets.

However, bookbinder James Tapley stills sees the use and beauty in books covered with gold-leaf detail instead of a screen.

Tapley is aware that some find his profession to be antiquated but he considers the intricate work he does to be a need.

“I didn’t predict the computer or iPads,” Tapley said. “There will always be a market for what I do; it’s just that it seems the market is getting smaller and smaller all the time.”

Tapley first became interested in bookbinding when he was a teenager living in Lakeland. At his local library, he found a book on French decorative arts.

“I opened to this spread with very high-style, art bookbindings,” Tapley said. “These are bookbindings that use the skills of the very best craftspeople in the world. I just thought they were incredibly beautiful. That’s when I wanted to find out about bookbinding.”

Bookbinding wasn’t a skill taught in trade schools or universities, but rather, through apprenticeships. Tapley traveled

to New York and then to Europe to learn the craft of bookbinding.

“I was lucky in that I got interested in bookbinding when the last really great generation of American binders were still alive and working,” he said.

Today, clients come to Tapley with historical first editions and rare collectables to be restored.

He produces modern fine binding to replace original binding as well as creating binding for smallbatch publications as mementos.

“One of the things I love about my profession is the incredible range of works that come through,” Tapley said. “You just never know what it’s going to be.”

One work that Tapley enjoyed researching and restoring was for a client who brought in a book their parents brought with them when they fled Russia. It was an illustrated atlas with the various nationalities that lived in Russia under the last czar. The book included hand-colored portraits of people and their native clothing. The book was an ethnic and geographic record.

“I did some quick research for them and found out that it was worth a couple of hundred thousand dollars,” Tapley said.

Tapley later found out the reason it was so valuable was because the czar’s court had financed the production of only about 100 copies of the book.

James Tapley works with various colors of leather to rebuild the binding of books.

In Sarasota, Tapley has helped restore titles in the library at the Ringling Museum of Art. Currently, the Secret Garden exhibit at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens features some of Tapley’s craftsmanship in the restored bindings of the books of botanical illustrations.

Tapley treasures being able to restore these valuable titles, but the most rewarding work is in restoring family heirlooms that are priceless to their owners.

He recalls a client bringing her Bible to be repaired and wasn’t able to afford the restoration.

“Her Bible was coming apart, and the first thing she said when she came in was, ‘You probably don’t work on things as insignificant as this,’” Tapley said.

Tapley recognized the significance the book had to her and did the work in exchange for a cake she baked for him.

“You can’t put a value on that,” Tapley said. “The work I enjoy doing most is the work that matters to someone. That Bible means more to her than some very expensive book a wealthy collector is able to buy.”

When Tapley describes the process of bookbinding, it’s as though the pages are a living being.

He describes having a book clamped under a press for days because the pages have a memory in the way they are laid.

“An old binding, even if it’s damaged, is part of the history of the book,” Tapley said.

Although he prefers his work be judged by its cover, Tapley admits he often satisfies his curiosity by reading the material he’s given to restore.

“Ultimately, I got interested in books because I was a reader, and I still am,” Tapley said. “So the content is still way more important than the outside. God knows I’ve put some very attractive covers on some pretty dismal books.”

The Buchanans were recognized for their contributions to local charities. Some of the causes they support include Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, Community Foundation of

Sarasota County, Mote Marine Laboratory and Ringling Museum of Art. This marks the first Leadership Breakfast since the transition of the CYD programs was announced in June. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County now oversees the programs and has taken in much of the administrative staff.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County President and CEO Bill Sadlo took a moment to recognize former CYD founder and Executive Director Karen Bogues.

“It’s been an incredible experience for me to help shape Sarasota County’s view on young people,” Bogues said. “I wish I could reach out to everyone who has helped me along the way. They showed me that I could be a leader.”

For many adults interested in enrichment education, a lot of time has passed since they’ve navigated a course catalog.

Students can be overwhelmed with the registration process for various adult-education programs in the community.

To remove obstacles for adults who want to enroll in classes and sample the curricula before committing to registration, the Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy, Pierian Spring

Academy and Adult and Community Enrichment (ACE) — each of which offers not-forcredit courses — have formed the SunCoast Alliance for Lifelong Learning.

Through the partnership, the organizations have built a central website, suncoastlifelonglearning.org, and database to make registration easier for students.

“This is really an easy way to find opportunities for students,” said Galina Jordan, ACE volunteer coordinator. “Now, we have to make more partnerships to increase our database and offer-

ings for students.”

On Friday, more than 100 students enjoyed a sampling of classes offered by all three groups during the second Lifelong Learning Showcase at Suncoast Technical College.

Sample classes ranged from traditional computer classes to Zentangle — a meditative process in which students put pencil to paper to draw patterns offered through ACE. Robert de Warren, an international ballet director and instructor at Ringling Lifelong Learning Academy, discussed his experience with the Iranian Ballet, and Miles Williams, who teaches at the Pierian Spring Academy, gave a lecture on “The European Union and the Refugee Crisis.”

Prospective student Bill Wolfe got a taste of a cooking course offered by ACE instructor Robin Rosen. Three months ago, when Wolfe and his wife relocated to Sarasota, they had adult education in mind.

“In addition to the beautiful beaches and weather, I wanted the arts and adult education,” Wolfe said. “They have a wide range of classes here, and this is a taste of what they’re offering.”

While Rosen whipped up a butternut squash apple soup with a salad, Wolfe took notes.

Wolfe was surprised by how much he enjoyed the salad of kale and Brussels sprouts with a maple poppy seed dressing. Along with cooking, Wolfe sampled classes on topics like history, arts and even magic tricks.

“Because of the taste that I got, I’m going to sign up for things I’ve never done before,” Wolfe said.
