Happy new year
Temple Emanu-El families celebrated the beginning of Rosh Hashanah with the traditional sounding of the shofar during an afternoon festival event Sept. 7. Although it was a quick event due to early afternoon heat, families made the most of the day by visiting various learning stations and teaching their children about the Jewish New Year. Families and children — including 6-year-old Dylan Baker and Nina Mendola (above) — picked up food and then got to coloring in special Rosh Hashanahthemed arts and crafts projects, such as a shofar coloring page.
Cruise of the century
People usually celebrate birthdays in style, but Millie Miller and Fran Saylor did a lot more than that for their 100th birthdays. The women turned 100 a day apart in July and marked the occasion with a Sarasota Bay cruise planned by the Second Wind Dreams nonprofit. Miller and Saylor embarked on the trip Sept. 3 to sightsee around Bird Key and Lido Key, checking out areas past Ringling Bridge into North Sarasota Bay. The duo ate lunch together and enjoyed the views — the weather couldn’t have been better.
