Visitors to one of Sarasota’s most identifiable landmarks may have found themselves in a splash zone Tuesday morning, as crews worked to pressure clean the Unconditional Surrender statue.

Workers from Sarasota-based pressurewashing company Gorilla Kleen began the process at 8:30 a.m., with the artwork’s owner, Tom Savage, on-site to witness the cleanup effort.

John Cloud, the owner of Gorilla Kleen, said he believes the 26-foottall statue hadn’t been cleaned since it was temporarily removed for repairs in 2012, after a car crashed into it.

Although it might not seem obvious to visitors, Cloud said the artwork had accumulated its share of grime over the years.

Based on the progress Tuesday morning, Cloud believed the bayfront icon should be refreshed once the pressure washing is completed.

“Anything near a road gets dirty,” Cloud said.

“Fortunately, it’s cleaning up really well.”

Gulf Gate Library ranked most beautiful in Florida Online technology publication Tech Insider named Gulf Gate Library the most beautiful library in Florida in its list of the most beautiful libraries in the country.

Previously, the library was recognized with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver award from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2015.

Gulf Gate Library reopened January 2015 at 7112 Curtiss Ave. after undergoing a $7.7 million renovation.

Gulf Gate Library Manager Christine Aston says the building is a product of community input and architectural vision.

“The entire county really supports the library system, but this community in particular has a real connection to ... this particular library,” said Aston. “It really is a community meeting place.”

A

t least once a week, Rob Schanley does something almost no other Sarasota resident has been able to do since at least 2012.

Schanley, the city’s asset manager, regularly conducts walkthroughs of the former GWIZ building. The children’s science museum closed its main gallery four years ago, and the 117,000-square-foot property has been vacant since the city terminated a lease agreement in February 2014.

Today, portions of the building appear to remain in relatively good condition. The walls in the atrium still bear vibrant shades of blue, green and purple. Signs advertising the hours of operation and cost of admission are still posted behind a desk near the main entrance.

The “Fab Lab,” now used as storage space, otherwise looks about as well-kept as one might expect of a feature opened in 2011. Some of the museum’s property still remains, like in the “EcoZone,” a room that featured exhibits on plants and lizards. On the second level, more signage instructs visitors to take the “GWIZ Quiz.”

This year, however, Schanley determined the 33,444-squarefoot building’s flaws were adding up. The city spends about $44,000 annually to keep the property from falling into disrepair, but a lack of real maintenance was exacerbating problems.

The air conditioning system, set to run at 80 degrees to prevent mold, needed to be replaced.

The plumbing system was shut off completely and also in need of upgrades. The roof required repairs, and a glass atrium made that task an even bigger challenge.

After initial discussions about finding a new tenant to replace GWIZ, in 2014, the city deferred any decision regarding the future of the property. Instead, officials opted to wait until Sarasota Bayfront 20:20, an independent group calling for the redevelopment of 42 acres of city-owned land adjacent to GWIZ, had finished its work.

As of this summer, the process of creating a master plan for that land still hadn’t begun in earnest.

As a result, Schanley included a request for $300,000 in repairs to the GWIZ property in the city’s 2016-17 capital improvement budget, the minimum he believed was necessary to return the building to a decent condition.

Schanley said he wanted to be proactive regarding the status of the GWIZ property, built in 1976 to house the Selby Public Library.

The cost of repairing the property will continue to escalate. Schanley wanted to make sure officials were aware of the situation sooner rather than later.

“I didn’t want to be the one saying, ‘By the way, it’ll cost $1 million to fix the building,’” he said.

At a July 7 City Commission meeting, Commissioner Susan Chapman used the budget request to propose replacing the building with a public park.

“I’m wondering if this is an appropriate time to have a discussion about whether maybe we want to say that building is past its prime, and maybe we take that building down and make that part a park, as the public wanted at the beginning of Bayfront 20:20,” Chapman said.

placed the cost between $130,000 and $225,000 — on the high end, just $75,000 less than the requested repairs. Beyond those repairs, however, Schanley suggested a new tenant might need to invest several hundred thousand dollars itself to make the facility operational.

Not everyone is prepared to give up on the building. Sara Rankin Wilson served as the CEO of GWIZ from 2012 to 2013. The museum faced severe financial challenges, but she says the facility wasn’t a problem.

“It was a beautiful building,” Wilson said. “That would be sad if they tear it down.”

From an operations standpoint, Wilson said the building had ample parking. She remembers problems with a leaky roof, but beyond that, she recalls the GWIZ property as one with exemplary architecture in a prime location.

Michael Klauber, the leader of Bayfront 20:20, hopes to have a new planning organization guiding the redevelopment effort by September. That organization will act based on the resources and information available to it — which means the question of what to do with GWIZ is up to the city.

“It really doesn’t affect anything with 20:20,” Klauber said.

On July 28, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce briefly discussed the future of the GWIZ property — and the rest of the city-owned bayfront land — at an investment update.

Chamber CEO Steve Queior said the organization doesn’t have any specifics in mind, but the group is interested in a public-private investment that would create jobs and generate revenue for the city.

For those concerned the demolition of the GWIZ facility might lead to the sale of the land to a pri-

vate developer, Schanley said the fears are unfounded. The property, zoned for governmental use, requires city approval of a major conditional use for even a nonprofit to operate — and the sale of the land is not an option.

“The city couldn’t really sell the property, because we got it free from the state,” Schanley said.

If the city does make changes to the property, Wilson thinks officials should pursue a grander architectural achievement — enhancing a place she considers one of the most valuable parcels in the region.

“I felt like I was sitting on the prettiest spot in Sarasota every day,” Wilson said.

Murals continue to adorn the exterior of the GWIZ property, even as some signs deteriorate due to lack of maintenance.

self back in Sarasota leading a team of researchers documenting Newtown’s stories.

Oldham’s project was the first part of the city’s multiphase effort to preserve Newtown’s history. The project began in 2015, after city officials solicited applicants to conduct a comprehensive study documenting the neighborhood’s past.

It resulted in nearly 400 pages of historical information, collected using everything from personal interviews to a plat-by-plat study of the original neighborhood. For Oldham, the text — its corners worn from frequent use — is a tangible explanation of her past.

But for Karatzas, it’s a resource for future research.

He’s spending his summer in Sarasota conducting preliminary research for an article he plans to write documenting the history of Sarasota, particularly the history of its predominantly AfricanAmerican neighborhoods.

He stumbled upon a line about

Newtown during his extensive research of American history. It piqued his interest, and eventually, the lines became pages as he sought more information.

He spends much of his time in Sarasota County’s Historical Resources Library collecting data to bring back to Spain. He unloads boxes of newspaper clippings, placing them in chronological order as he goes. To the right of his growing pile of worn paper sits a crisp copy of Oldham’s report on Newtown’s history.

Karatzas’ and Oldham’s parallel interest in the Newtown happened by coincidence. They’ve never met, but their mission is the same — to tell the stories of Newtown and spur a dialogue that may be overdue.

“By preserving the past, people start taking pride in the community again,” Oldham sad.

With phase 1 of Newtown’s conservation project complete, she’s hoping to expose new audiences to Newtown’s history during phase 2. She plans to create a website and place 15 markers in front of key landmarks in Newtown, such as Newtown’s business district and its historic boundary.

Oldham’s primary purpose is to document her community’s local history, but she understands Newtown’s story isn’t unique.

“You can see that this is a microcosm of the history of black communities throughout the

United States,” Oldham said.

Karatzas feels compelled to tell the stories from within that microcosm. nnn

Karatzas often gets asked why he doesn’t study Greek history.

He says Greek history tells him where civilization has been, but American history tells him where civilization is going. He considers himself an international citizen, holding multiple degrees from Greek, Dutch and Spanish universities and is impressed by what he sees as the United States’ capacity for dialogue between factions.

“Of course there are problems,” Karatzas said, “But they are more experienced in how to receive somebody from other cultures.”

Though the situation is not identical, Karatzas believes Newtown’s story has international resonance as Europe grapples with a sudden influx of refugees and hopes his work will contribute to a conversation of acceptance. He hopes by highlighting African-Americans’ fight for equality, Europe can avoid making the same mistakes.

“Hopefully, if they see this outcome of the past, they won’t repeat it,” Karatzas said.

Meanwhile, Oldham has a lot of plans for her own project and doesn’t see it ending soon.

“What I can’t do in my lifetime, someone else will pick it up...Yeah, someone else will pick it up,” Oldham said.

Though Newtown is the primary historically black neighborhood in Sarasota today, it wasn’t the first.

When the city was originally platted, Sarasota’s AfricanAmerican population lived in Overtown—now known as the Rosemary District. But Overtown residents began moving north in 1914 as downtown began to expand.

“What African-Americans did is bond together, form a village, stress the importance of education, self-reliance and having a strong faith,” Oldham said.

But even as she recites the past, she can’t help but plan for the future.

More than 100 years after Overtown’s residents moved north, very little of the neighborhood is left. Oldham hopes the city’s project will prevent Newtown from the same fate. She hopes her collection of stories will inspire those who might have left to come

“I have taken a position — if they decide they’d like to find a way to do the expansion but for the loading zone on Rawls, I would assist in any way to facilitate that,” Fournier said in a previous interview with the Sarasota Observer. “We would recommend whatever code adjustments are necessary.”

Fournier said the city will have 30 days to file a response to the appeal following a forthcoming order from the circuit court.

“I was kind of hoping maybe it could be avoided, but I said more than once they had a perfect right to appeal,” he said.

The future of the Woman’s Exchange on Orange Avenue remains in question. Before filing the petition, Lincoln said even a favorable ruling from the circuit court might take too long for the Woman’s Exchange and that the shop is evaluating its options for moving to a new location.

On Friday, legal representatives for the Woman’s Exchange filed an appeal in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court challenging the city’s decision to reject the consignment shop’s plans for expansion.

The petition for writ of certiorari, written by attorney Robert Lincoln, makes the case that the City Commission misinterpreted its zoning code by denying a building permit for the Woman’s Exchange in April.

The Laurel Park Neighborhood Association successfully appealed city staff’s decision to approve the proposed expansion of the Woman’s Exchange. The expansion called for the construction of a 3,524-square-foot building at 526 Rawls Ave. as well as the addition of a loading zone on Rawls.

Laurel Park residents said the loading zone was inappropriate for Rawls, which sits on the

boundary of mixed-use and residential zoning districts. The City Commission agreed, ruling 3-2 that the loading area would not be compatible with the neighboring residential properties.

In the petition, Lincoln argues that the commission acted on the arbitrary feelings of residents, rather than the legal standards outlined in the code.

“At the conclusion of the hearing, despite mountains of contrary evidence and testimony by the city’s own expert staff members, the commission improperly yielded to neighborhood opposition to the loading zone that was included in the site plan — a loading zone mandated by city staff, mandated by the zoning code and required for the safe and efficient operation of the Woman’s Exchange property,” Lincoln wrote in the filing.

Before the Woman’s Exchange filed its appeal, the city had already begun the process of revising its code to clarify portions governing the Woman’s Exchange and neighboring properties. On Tuesday, city staff will host a community workshop discussing a comprehensive plan amendment designed to facilitate the expansion of the Woman’s Exchange without the loading zone on Rawls.

Currently, the city’s zoning code does not permit the creation of a loading zone on roads designated as “primary streets,” which are intended to be more pedestrian oriented. Both Orange Avenue and Oak Street — the other two streets the Woman’s Exchange property fronts — are primary streets.

If the proposed change were approved, it would remove the primary street designation beginning 50 feet east of Orange Avenue on Oak Street, allowing for the construction of a loading zone on Oak. A similar provision would apply to Morrill Street and Laurel Street, designed to allow other businesses along Orange Avenue to add points of ingress and egress without relying on Rawls Street.

The notice for Tuesday’s workshop acknowledges that, as it stands, the city’s zoning regulations impede the Woman’s Exchange’s ability to expand at its current property, located at 539 S. Orange Ave. City Attorney Robert Fournier believes the proposed comprehensive plan amend-

County incubates new chicken regulations ANNA BRUGMANN STAFF WRITER

Following a community workshop Tuesday regarding an ordinance that would legalize residential chicken-keeping in Sarasota County, a woman stood in the middle of a group that had remained to discuss the issue.

As she spoke, she stopped short, looking over both her shoulders.

Then, she shrugged.

“Well, I guess there is no one here who could get me in trouble,” she said.

Knowing she was surrounded by other supporters of the proposed ordinance, she confessed: She had already ordered her chickens.

She planned to pick up five chicks from the post office the next morning, and she thinks the County Commission will pass the ordinance before the chickens are big enough to live outside.

But for now, she hopes her neighbor won’t find out.

Most of the attendees seemed excited about the prospect of keeping chickens — particularly because they either know someone who already has chickens in Sarasota County or because they were keeping them themselves.

ing them illegally for years without issue. When neighborhood disputes do pop up, Miller says the chickens become pawns in a feud between humans.

“People bust their neighbors,” Miller said. “Then, building code people come out and say you have so many days to become compliant, and then they have to get rid of their chickens.”

The proposed ordinance limits Sarasota County residents to four chickens, no roosters and does not apply to deed-restriced areas that already prohibit chickens. It also mandates chickens be kept in a movable coop at least 10 feet from property lines and 25 feet from a neighboring residential structure.

Sarasota County Zoning Administrator Donna Thompson says the county is giving homeowners associations time to adjust if they would like to prohibit chickens in their neighborhoods.

The ordinance will go before the Planning Commission Aug. 18 and is slated for its first County Commission hearing Sept. 10.

Miller believes passing an ordinance will prevent people from being forced to get rid of their pets while encouraging them to keep chickens responsibly.

“I really do think that if you tell people there are rules, people will try to follow those rules,” Miller said.

‘No’ on Amendment 4 Property-tax breaks for solar-energy devices sounds and reads like an environmental Apple Pie issue. But with every new law, there are always winners and losers.

H

ere we go again: Another proposed constitutional amendment on Florida’s ballot that reads and sounds like Apple Pie goodness.

But that darn devil is always lurking in the details.

This is Amendment 4. If approved by 60% of voters in the Aug. 30 primary elections, it would codify in the state constitution tax breaks for having solar or renewable energy devices on all property. Specifically, the amendment would exempt solar or renewable-energy devices from the state’s tangible personal property tax and from being included in the value of the annual assessment on your property for ad-valorem tax purposes.

The big change from existing exemptions is that the tax breaks would be broadened to include not only residential but commercial properties as well.

It sounds wonderful. And what an attractive incentive to help spur wider use of solar energy in the state and to reduce Florida’s use of carbon, fossil-fuel energy. You hardly can get more green than that. Indeed, the climate changers love the idea.

As do scores of others whose inclination is to embrace any kind of tax break. Indeed, you’ll find that in addition to the support of all of the pro-solar, pro-wind energy, antifossil-fuel special interests, Florida business groups (i.e. more special interests) are embracing the amendment full throttle (see box below).

Who doesn’t love a tax break? And one that is environmentally friendly to boot?

But when you peel back the skin of this amendment, the sweet Apple Pie appeal actually should leave somewhat of a sour taste.

But first, the pro-propaganda. If passed, Amendment 4 will be the first step toward energy and economic utopia in Florida. At least that’s the impression the two primary proponents of the measure give you.

Those proponents, by the way, are Floridians for Solar Choice Inc., an alleged grassroots organization, and its primary financial backer, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE). The latter is a Knoxville, Tenn.-based organization of climatechange activists that has contributed

nearly $2 million of the $2.12 million Floridians for Solar Choice has received in contributions (see sidebar below) since January 2015.

With passage of Amendment 4, proponents say, residents and businesses that install solar-energy devices would benefit from lower property taxes, lower tangible taxes and lower energy bills. All good. Even better: The increase in solar power usage would mean less pollution. And to top it off, proponents say, passage of the amendment would spur the creation of solar companies and thousands of jobs in Florida for solarpanel makers, installers and maintenance technicians.

Everybody wins. Who can argue with any of that?

But as you also know: Whenever a new law is adopted, there are always — always — unintended consequences, and there are always winners and losers. This also reminds us of the famous dictum about laws from the late Nobel economist Milton Friedman: What you give to one, you must take away from another.

So let’s call this what it is: Amendment 4 is a subsidy for solar users and crony capitalism for the solar industry. It also is a regressive tax that likely will help the better off at the

LOOK WHO’S FUNDING THE SOLAR CAMPAIGN Whenever Floridians vote on a constitutional amendment, you can learn a lot about the motivations and meaning behind an amendment when you see who is funding the campaign.

In the case of Amendment 4 on the Aug. 30 state ballot — the solar device amendment — the face of the campaign is an organization known as Floridians for Solar Choice Inc. But the real money and influence behind this group is a Knoxville, Tenn.-based nonprofit organization of climate-change activists — the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE).

SACE’s political action committee, between January 2015 and July 22, 2016, made 109 contributions to Floridians for Solar Choice totaling $1,902,192. That’s 90% of the $2,123,597 in total contributions.

SACE badly wants Amendment 4 to pass.

SACE promotes itself as an organization “striving to make clean energy solutions to climate change a top priority for elected leaders” in the Southeast. And at the top of its list of targets is Florida. “… Few states are as critical to the discussion as Florida,” SACE says on its website. “As the nation’s third most populous state (recently surpassing New York),

Florida is the largest electricity market in the United States that does not have coherent energy policy.”

While SACE promotes itself as nonpartisan, when you read the biographies of the SACE staff, you can clearly see the organization’s bias: It believes solar power is the answer; disdains fossil fuels; and sneers at traditional electric utilities, which it describes as “monopolies that currently have no limits on their carbon pollution from burning coal.”

Now you know there’s more to the agenda of Amendment 4 than tax breaks for solar panels.

expense of the less well off.

Both of these consequences, however, are overshadowed by and wrapped in the environmental activists’ purity goal of reducing consumers’ use of the most economical forms of energy — fossil fuels, in favor of the most uneconomical and expensive form of energy — solar.

Think of the consequences this way: If, say, the amendment passes, and there is indeed an explosion in the installation of solar panels on residential and commercial buildings all over Florida, one of the results will be a shift in taxation.

City and county tax assessors would exempt solar devices from their assessments of residential and commercial buildings, creating a benefit (lower property taxes than they otherwise would be) for those who can afford solar panels. Those who can’t afford solar panels gradually would feel the shift of their property taxes going up so local governments can maintain their levels of tax collections and services.

Why is this amendment even needed? Why does Florida need to codify a measure that will forever favor one form of energy over another? Can you imagine a U.S. constitutional amendment giving a similar tax break?

Clearly, this is part of the political agenda of climate activists, such as those at SACE. Indeed, they would not need to tilt laws in favor of solar panels and solar devices if solar energy were economically competitive.

Here’s the reality about solar: It’s clean and renewable, yes. But …

Writing last December in “Solar Carve Outs for the Sunshine State,” James Taylor, a senior fellow at the Tallahassee-based James Madison Institute, noted a 2014 Brookings Institution study that concluded: “Adding up the net energy cost of the five low-carbon alternatives, far and away the most expensive is solar. It costs almost 19 cents more per KWH than power from the coal or gas plants that it displaces … To place these additional costs in context, the average cost of electricity to consumers in 2012 was 9.84 cents per KWH, including the cost of transmission and distribution of electricity.”

“As a result,” the Brookings Institution added, “a new solar plant [would cost] at least 200% more [i.e., triple the cost] than using coal and gas technologies.”

Let’s also keep in mind how much solar energy is subsidized already. In addition to the property-tax exemption already given to residential solar devices in Florida, solar power equipment is exempted from sales taxes.

And state power utilities and municipalities also offer solar power rebates and incentive programs. Nationwide, according to Taylor, the solar power industry in 2013 received $5.3 billion in subsidies compared to $5.1 billion in subsidies for the coal, natural gas, nuclear and oil industries combined.

What does that tell you? To be sure, every Floridian, for that matter, every American, embraces the idea of harnessing the sun’s power for energy. But at what price and at whose expense?

While Amendment 4 reads and sounds like environmental Motherhood and Apple Pie, this measure is yet another attempt by political activists to cement forever in the Florida Constitution a special benefit, to pick an energy winner over an energy loser. Solar energy, like fossil fuels, should stand on its own merit.

Amendment 4 should not be in the Florida Constitution.

We recommend: No.

The food truck debate is revving its engine once again, as officials prepare to revisit the county’s food truck ordinance at an Aug. 18 meeting.

At the behest of food truck operators, Sarasota County has been working to amend an ordinance that now mandates food trucks maintain an operating distance of 800 feet from an brick-and-mortar establishment and 750 feet from any temporary vendors.

But even if the ordinance were amended, trucks would still need to pursue special permission from county commissioners to operate on Siesta Key, but Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mark Smith still has reservations about changing the ordinance.

He feels the presence of food trucks puts restaurants at a competitive disadvantage, because mobile vendors do not shoulder the same expenses as brick-andmortar businesses.

“They don’t need to lose business to a company that doesn’t pay property taxes,” Smith said.

However, Michelle Jett, owner of the Baja Boys food truck, believes food trucks actually bolster local businesses by exposing more people to a retail area. She said she attracts people who are busy and ready to leave, but those people may return when circumstances make her truck a less appealing option.

“If it’s raining, they’re not going to eat with me,” Jett said. “Even I’m not going to go to a food truck in the rain. I think there is a time and a place for anything and everything.”

presence of homeless individuals could hurt Siesta Key’s image as a vacation destination.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department, it is not uncommon for deputies to make contact with homeless and transient people during patrols.

Failing any actual criminal activity, law enforcement cannot respond to the mere presence of homeless people.

Anecdotally, SKVA President Mark Smith thinks the homeless presence on the Key has increased this summer. He believes the

availability of showers on Siesta Key Beach, coupled with the proximity to food and crowds, makes Siesta Key Village inviting to homeless individuals.

“It’s more noticeable than it used to be,” Smith said. “I think the number of homeless in the village has increased in the last couple months.”

Sarasota continues to lack a comprehensive plan to address the regional homelessness issue as county and city officials remain divided on the ideal course of action. Both the city and county team with service providers to aid homeless individuals, but in the village, there are no official resources available for the homeless population.

“There are no services here for people who are in trouble,” Smith said.

SKVA has not taken an official position or advocated for any particular solution to issues related to homelessness, but representatives’ echoed the sentiments of mainland business owners.

“The panhandling makes people uncomfortable,” Smith said.

But while the complaints are plenty, the solutions are few.

“They’re not breaking any laws,” Smith said. “I’m not sure what you can really do about it.”

Last Valentine’s Day, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota opened an exhibit that seemed a natural extension of the 15-acre site’s focus and mission. More than 1,000 orchids and other plants were displayed as part of “The Orchid Show: Celebrating 40 Years at Selby Gardens.”

The exhibit highlighted a specialty of Selby — the world’s only botanical garden dedicated to the

study, research and display of epiphytes. Those are plants such as orchids, bromeliads and ferns that grow on other plants without harming them.

The six-week show was also a test of a new living museum business model for Selby Gardens, and the results proved overwhelmingly positive. Comparing the run of the exhibit to the same sixweek period in 2015, Selby posted a 42% increase in admissions revenue, a 45% increase in retail shop revenue, a 50% increase in

food sales and a 67% increase in memberships.

“Shifting to this exhibition model translated to all the different earned revenue areas of the organization across the board,” says Selby President and CEO Jennifer Rominiecki. “What’s so exciting about being a living museum is we’re really changing the scope of what an exhibit is. With a museum exhibit, you might expect you’re going to go into a gallery, look at art and then leave. But what we’re doing is much more interdisciplinary and experiential.”

The orchid show drew 45,000 visitors, almost half from outside Florida. Of the Floridian visitors, about a third were from outside Sarasota County. “If a tourist comes to Sarasota, they need to feel that Selby Gardens is a mustsee destination,” says Rominiecki.

“Part of that is giving everybody a reason to come, and these exhibits are a way to do that.”

The living museum — featuring changing, interdisciplinary, artistic and cultural exhibitions tied to the gardens’ plant collections — aims to both attract first-time visitors and encourage repeat visits to Selby, which welcomed nearly 160,000 guests in 2015. “I never want to hear someone say, ‘I’ve been to Selby; it’s beautiful,’ as if they don’t need to go back,” says Rominiecki. “I think the onus is on us to create these happenings in order to give you reasons to keep coming back.”

The new model is also a chance for Selby to further diversify its revenue streams away from private fundraising, a big goal for a nonprofit. Selby had $4.25 million

in 2013 revenues, down slightly from the previous year, according to its most recent public tax filings. It has nearly $12 million in assets.

“I expect this year to be very transformative financially for the institution,” says Rominiecki, named president and CEO in December 2014. “I think there’s been a real shift with nonprofit organizations. Donors and investors want to know that institutions are doing everything they can to earn other sources of revenue in order to take the pressure off private fundraising.”

To further increase earned revenues, Selby Gardens recently partnered with Sarasota restaurant and caterer Michael’s On East. The deal makes Michael’s the exclusive food service provider for weddings and other events at Selby Gardens and the Selby Café. Now a higher percentage of event revenues goes directly to Selby than it did before, when a variety of caterers were used.

And Michael’s On East handles all steps in the event process, from scheduling to menu planning.

“They’re horticulturalists; they’re not in the food business,” says Phil Mancini, co-proprietor of Michael’s On East. “This takes the location out of the food service business and lets them do what they do best. You’re going to see this more and more.”

Mancini has already had experience with this, creating the Deep Sea Diner at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, now run by his brother. “Everybody is looking at these models and how important they are,” he says. “They’re realizing that food service operations are important to the future of the location.”

The partnership will also make possible an expansion of Selby’s event space, scheduled to begin Aug 1. Plans call for doubling the indoor seating to up to 400 guests, boosting the outdoor patio size from 880 square feet to 2,400 square feet, remodeling the current kitchen and adding new restrooms. Michael’s on East will pay for the majority of improvements, while Selby will chip in for updates that would have been necessary regardless of whether it was expanded.

Mancini, who proposed this kind of plan to the gardens about a decade ago, declined to disclose the cost of the project. Michael’s on East also made investments in redoing the Selby Café, and has seen sales double there since it took it over in December.

“This is the one I’ve been waiting for 10 to 15 years,” he says. “I always said that if I was going to do another banquet space in Sarasota, it would be on the water.

That’s where the demand is.”

A NEW WAY TO DISPLAY

Selby owes its existence to its namesake, Marie Selby. The first woman to cross the country by car, she directed the landscaping plan for the property on Sarasota Bay, where she lived with her husband, Bill, beginning in the early 1920s.

Upon her death in 1971, she left the property to the community as a botanical garden “for the enjoyment of the general public.” A board of directors was appointed, which then consulted with the New York Botanical Garden and the University of Florida on a focus for the gardens. It was determined Selby Gardens should specialize in epiphytic plants,

which would make it unique among the country’s other botanical gardens. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens opened to the public July 7, 1975. (Emily Walsh, a publisher of the Observer Media Group, parent company of the Longboat Observer, is serving a two-year term as chairwoman of Selby’s board.)

The current shift to the exhibition model is the result of a recent strategic planning process at Selby. Rominiecki’s previous employer, the New York Botanical Garden, had success with a similar approach.

“A garden is ever-changing, and you have to really highlight that,” she says. “Many gardens are doing outdoor sculpture exhibits because they don’t have the facilities to do indoor ones. But we were primed for it right from the beginning, so I thought this was a perfect thing for us to explore.”

Selby Gardens has hosted art exhibits in its historic Payne Mansion since 1979, so it had an exhibit site already in place. It held a fundraising campaign to improve the mansion’s climate control, lighting and security systems to better showcase highquality artwork.

The gardens will start off its new model by showcasing rare botanical illustrations and preserved plant specimens from its own collection in “Selby’s Secret Garden,” which opens Aug. 26.

“We have rare botanical books and prints dating to the 1700s that have never been shown to the public before, and they’re absolutely spectacular,” says Rominiecki.

as part of a series sponsored by Sarasota philanthropists Jean and Alfred Goldstein. “Marc Chagall’s Cote d’Azur: The Artist’s Botanical Imagery and Inspiration Found on the French Riviera” will include as its centerpiece “The Lovers,” a circa-1937 oil painting by Chagall that will be on loan from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Rominiecki hopes those exhibits are two of many more to come.

“I think the community is really excited about Selby doing something new,” says Rominiecki, “and I think that there’s a lot of momentum and energy.”

To the uninitiated, the plans to renovate the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe’s campus along Orange Avenue might seem relatively modest.

To Nate Jacobs, founder and creative director of the theater company, it’s a major step forward for the institution he helped establish 17 years ago.

Until 2013, the theater operated without a permanent home. That year, the company purchased the 2-acre property at 1646 10th Way, officially moving into the venue that had temporarily housed the theater for the previous three years.

Now, the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is seeking the city’s approval to enhance and expand the property, located at the northeast corner of the Rosemary District. For Jacobs, the renovations are an affirmation that his once nomadic theater company is now a fixture in Sarasota’s arts community.

“It’s a sense of pride and a sense of contentment for us as an organization, to be here and to be able to not worry about — where are we going to have rehearsal, and can we find a place to rent to have enough dates to do shows?”

Jacobs said. “It’s a serious weight off of my shoulders. We couldn’t fully do what we wanted to do.

We were always working around someone else’s schedule.”

The organization plans to add permanent seating to the main theater, adding between 20 and 40 seats to increase the capacity to around 200. The main theater building would get new dressing rooms and rehearsal space, larger lobby and reception areas, and improved restrooms.

The theater intends to move its administrative staff from downtown Sarasota into the two-story, 12,000-square-foot Binz building, adding multipurpose and conference rooms as well. The plans also call for 20 additional

parking spaces and the creation of a plaza area between the two buildings.

Julie Leach, the theater’s executive director, said the organization has already taken the opportunity to expand its creative offerings after moving into its permanent home. The corresponding renovations will help facilitate that growth, which includes the addition of a youth summer camp this year, while allowing for continued expansion going forward as needed.

“Our program’s grown,” Leach said. “We’re kind of busting at the seams in terms of theater space, and we have a couple of different education programs.”

Leach said the theater is in the quiet phase of a capital campaign to pay for the improvements, and said information regarding the project expenses will be available when that fundraising effort goes public.

Earlier this year, the Players Theatre announced its plans to leave its home near downtown Sarasota for a new venue in Lakewood Ranch. Players Managing Director Michelle Bianchi Pingel said the move was partially motivated by the crowded arts scene in the city.

Jacobs didn’t share those concerns. He said the Westcoast Black Theatre, in particular, benefited from a central location, drawing patrons from Longboat Key, Lakewood Ranch and even west Tampa, remaining in close proximity to the cultural core downtown and staying connected to Sarasota’s black community. The last point is particularly important for Jacobs.

“For a black theater organization — pretty much the only professional black theater organization in this landscape — there’s a sense of pride that there is a place we can call our own,” he said. “It’s a sense of pride for our whole community.”

The company has been a presence in the Sarasota arts community for nearly two decades, but Jacobs sees the refurnished space as a new beginning of sorts for the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.

“We control our destiny,” he said. “We are in control of our programs and our seasonal shows, and it puts us in a position to thoroughly and fully begin to stretch our legs artistically in this city.”

The woman said she didn’t want anything to happen to the children, but she wanted to talk to the children’s mother and have her pay for the mirror. The woman said she would call the mother herself to try to take care of the situation.

BRICK BREAKER 4:30 a.m. — 1700 block of Bethune Court Property Damage: A woman reported that another woman threw a brick at the front of her car, causing a large crack on the windshield and scratching the hood and bumper. The owner of the car said her friend had previously gotten into a fight with the woman who threw the brick. After handcuffing the woman who threw the brick, officers reported that she began kicking the window of the vehicle and attempted to spit on an officer. While being transported to jail, the woman continued to yell and threaten them, according to officers.

FIGHT NIGHT 2 a.m. — 1300 block of Main Street Dispute: A man called police after getting into a fight at a bar.

The man said he was not injured but claimed the other person involved in the fight was the aggressor. Based on the man’s own account, however, an officer determined it sounded like the fight was mutual. Security employees at the bar said the fight was minor, and the other person had already left the area. Nobody other than the man who reported the incident wanted to further pursue it.

GUEST OF DISHONOR 6 p.m. — 1200 block of North Palm Avenue Trespass: The manager of a restaurant said a man was disturbing other customers. The manager said the man was having sporadic outbursts and making other guests uncomfortable.

When one customer asked the man to stop, the man proceeded to curse at the customer and act as if he wanted to start a fight.

After an officer arrived on the scene, the manager issued the man a trespass warning, which bars him from returning to the restaurant for a year.

fter spending the better part of the summer with her toes in the sand, Cardinal Mooney sophomore Sophia Hebda is readjusting to the hardwood.

Hebda, who spends roughly eight months of the year playing beach volleyball, returned indoors for the first day of Cougars practice Aug. 1.

It’s a welcome transition for the 15-year-old Hebda, who enjoys spending time with her Cardinal Mooney teammates, but it also comes with a learning curve.

Although Hebda says her time in the sand has benefited her by increasing her vertical jump, over the next couple of weeks, she will have to retrain her body for indoor volleyball, focusing on timing, contacting the ball and jumping higher, among other technical aspects.

She will also have to adjust to playing with six girls on the court again, instead of the two in beach volleyball.

“I like being a ball hog,” Hebda

said. “In beach volleyball, you have to cover more of the court.

It’s more about shots and being smart and not about power.”

Cardinal Mooney senior captain Maddie McNally, who also spent the summer playing on the beach, will also need to adapt to the style of indoor play.

“In beach volleyball, it’s basically all on you,” the 17-year-old McNally said. “Indoor is a team sport, so you’re only one part ...

It’s more intense and faster paced.

It gives you that adrenaline rush.”

Hebda and McNally, an outside hitter for the Cougars, both began playing beach volleyball the summer before their freshman year of high school.

McNally started playing beach volleyball to keep playing throughout the summer when she wasn’t playing indoors. Hebda headed to the beach after her best friend encouraged her to give it a try.

While McNally found beach volleyball to be something fun to do in the summer, Hebda soon realized her future was on the sand.

Hebda opted to forgo playing club volleyball and spent the winter training on the beach.

“You get more touches on the ball,” Hebda said.

Over the summer, Hebda attended beach volleyball camp at the University of Southern California. The weeklong camp exposed her to new coach-

ing styles and helped her understand what it will take to play beach volleyball in college.

“I feel like this year, I realized how hard you have to work to get to the college level,” said Hebda.

In addition to playing in the Dig the Beach Series and attending summer camp, Hebda practices a few times a week with former Cardinal Mooney standout Annie Montgomery, a 2016 graduate of Florida State University, where she played beach volleyball.

“Beach is different because you have to have good ball control,” Montgomery said. “Sophia has smart vision, and she’s a good, smart player both indoors and on the beach.”

Unlike Hebda, McNally remains focused on indoor volleyball.

When she’s not playing for the Cougars, McNally plays travel volleyball for Tampa United and is looking to land a scholarship for indoor volleyball. She spent the summer visiting colleges to get a sense of what might be a good fit.

But for now, both girls are focused on the season before them and improving upon the Cougars’ 10-15 record last season.

“We have a different coach this year, who is very good,” McNally said of first-year coach Chad Sutton, who comes to Cardinal Mooney from Sarasota High. “He pushes us, and I think we need that because we have a lot of potential.”

Martial artists advance to championship finals R

ed Tiger Martial Artists Isaac Weintraub and Travis Brazil have 2020 Olympics visions after advancing to the finals of the 2016 USAT National Championships July 4-10, in Richmond, Va. Weintraub won a gold medal in the black belt 58kg division, while Brazil finished second in the black belt 63kg division.

“Being ranked No. 1 in the U.S. means not only that I achieve something I’ve been trying to for a long time, but also that I’m one step closer to my ultimate goal: the Olympics,” Weintraub said.

With a second-place finish at nationals, Brazil will enter the 2017 World Championship Team Trials as one of the top seeds, which will more than likely give him a first round bye in the competition.

“Being one of the top-ranked people in my division means a lot both mentally and in terms of ranking,” Brazil said. “I have grown more than I could have imagined in the past year.

Mentally, my confidence is a lot higher...”

From here, the two hope to make the National Team, compete more internationally and ultimately make the 2020 Olympic Team.

On Aug. 9, Weintraub will travel to the University of Central Oklahoma, where he and three other martial artists will be the first to receive scholarships and participate in UCO’s Center of Taekwondo Excellence.

Lunch with Punch” was the book Caiden Sedlak, 8, plucked from the shelves at Gulf Gate Library to read to Yukon, a sleepy Great Pyrenees.

Asked why she decided to read the book to Yukon, she said: “Because I can pet and read at the same time.”

Before Caiden could get to the second page, Yukon was sprawled out on the floor next to her doing his job of listening the best way he knows how.

On July 27, Caiden was one of the 20 children signed up for a chance to read to one of the dogs. The Read with Dogs weekly program takes place at libraries throughout Sarasota County and is designed to give children a chance to read out loud without fear of criticism.

The lineup of dogs certified by Alliance Pet Therapy includes: Yukon; Miss Fay, a black lab; Lexie, a black toy poodle; Parker, a Shih Tzu — and each was happy to lend a floppy ear to the young readers.

Volunteer Suzanne Vircik has been involved in the program at various libraries in Sarasota County for 10 years with her dogs, Lexie and Max. “One of the main things we see is that (the children are) very hesitant at first,” Vircik said.

She sits in a chair next to her toy poodle, Lexie, and helps hold the book so the children can have their hands available to pet while reading aloud.

“You’ll start to see the same children over time, and we get to know the families, too,” Vircik said.

The program takes a break during the month of August, meaning July 27 was the children’s final afternoon of reading to their canine audience before the school year begins.

Becky Hoffman, a teacher who moved this summer from Baltimore, brought her daughter Nicole, 5, to check out what will be their neighborhood library.

“Libraries have always been a huge part of my life,” Becky Hoffman said. “We’re not even unpacked, and we got library cards because all of our books are still boxed up.”

Nicole, who will enter first grade this year, decided to practice reading the book “Wait” to Parker, the Shih Tzu. “He’s a good listener,” Nicole Hoffman said. “He’s a very relaxing dog.”

MISS FAY Miss Fay is the prized black lab of Mary-Lou Moulton. Miss Fay has a history of service: She retired from breeding puppies for Southeastern Guide Dogs. But, just as importantly, it delivers another dream — the practical concerns to make living as easy and pleasant as possible for a busy couple. Both Swors are doctors and they needed a home that works.

Attention to detail is everywhere, and sometimes in the most unexpected places. The cozy family room, for example, does double duty as an aviary for Gray’s 20-year-old macaw, Elmo.

She raised him from a hatchling, and by now, he’s an established member of the family. He lives in a spacious cage in the corner, with a spectacular view at his disposal and a chance to interact with the family as he chatters away during meals.

Gray has long collected antiques, and she knew her dream house would have to accommodate her collection.

“Then, we traveled to Italy and fell in love with the architecture,” Gray says.

Everything came into focus: the old stone villas, the terraces and balconies, the pergolas that shaded outdoor dining areas. Now, she knew what she wanted.

She and Michael contacted Sarasota designer and builder J.E. Tucker, and they literally sketched their ideas on the back of a napkin.

“He made it work,” Gray says.

They already had a home — a 1,200-square-foot bungalow set on a spectacular piece of land in Coconut Bayou. But with six kids in the family — two were still living at home — they needed more space. Fortunately, their 0.70acre lot had plenty of room for expansion, not to mention 260 feet of near-perfect waterfront.

The Swors’ home is large — almost 6,500 square feet — but it is organized into a series of spaces to give it a more intimate feeling.

The core of the home contains a dramatic entry foyer and music room, with an equally grand living and dining area. Here, the beamed ceiling soars to 20 feet, with hickory floors and French doors leading to a terrace that overlooks the view.

“We both love to cook,” Gray Swors says, and their kitchen features a six-burner Thermador range set into an arched stone niche. Nearby is the family wing, with two bedrooms, each with its own bath, plus a separate guest suite.

Special attention was given to the master suite. The bedroom has its own terrace. There are his-and-hers baths and closets, and, as befits busy doctors, hisand-hers offices. Michael’s has a separate outside entrance, while Gray’s is up a short flight of stairs, a sort of “crow’s nest” space with built-in cabinetry and marble floors. And on the lower level is the “grotto”—a bar/playroom with a billiard table. Nearby is an exercise room that opens to an outdoor yoga deck.

With the children gone, the Swors have bought a smaller house that they are currently renovating. It’s just a short stroll away, because the couple have no

intention of leaving their neighborhood. Most residents of Coconut Bayou feel that way — it’s considered the jewel in the crown of north Siesta Key. Developed by Elbridge Boyd, who also developed the Sanderling Club, it has large lots, tropical vegetation and an atmosphere of complete peace and privacy.

After all, a dream home must have a dream location.

With expansive terraces and an infinity pool, the home’s outdoor living area looks out on the peace and quiet of Siesta Key’s Coconut Bayou.
